The Top 3 Most Important Topics: People, People and People
People, not customers
CEOs have long realized the importance of putting their customers first. And client-centric product and service development has become a no-brainer in innovation management.
Effectively implementing it, however, is something that many big and otherwise successful companies still struggle with. Organizations almost inevitably develop around capabilities of machinery, tools and software, and around functional skills of employees. It is hard to abandon the tradition of churning out products and then making sure someone buys them and start to actually listen what people need and then having the company develop, build and deliver it. The challenges are well known: change not only of organizational structures and processes, but also of mindsets is required.
In startups that survive the first early stages, on the other hand, making stuff for customers is not only the norm, it is a necessity and part of their reason for existence. Brilliant engineers and programmers in technology ventures are developing for their users. Rather than for the glory of making something conceptually fascinating. That’s good. And chances are that high activity in the startup space accelerates the transition in bigger companies. But I want to make the point that entrepreneurs and managers must not stop there.
While I have met many inspired individuals that have successfully built something great for their customers or their users, only few of them are building for people. This needs some explanation: Thinking about customers helps marketers to think about needs, about segments and groups with similar behavior or similar preferences. This is extremely useful and helpful. Thinking about use cases and users and gathering their feedback helps developers to prioritize and improve quickly. It is the right thing to do. So what is missing?
The above shortcuts are necessary, but to provide the greatest possible value, we have to find a way to look beyond customers and users, and at the people. We must finally aim to create an experience – not just a product, not just a service. This ambition has been around for all too long. Look at other departments in a company! Take customer support or shipping for example. A company will transform people into support tickets and postcodes to do the job. Still all the same people. But this is not just a call for great front-to-back CRM, a good system to bring all those bits and pieces about a person together again. Even though, yes, that is an important part of it. And companies are getting much better at it every day with new tools out there.
So what is left, aren’t all people that engage in some kind of financial transaction with a business by definition customers? Yes! And that is exactly the point. If we want to create experiences for people rather than products and services for customers, we also have to look at non-customers. And even at non-prospects. We have to stop thinking about a customer as an organism living isolated in a Petri dish. More likely than not, he or she has a proper name and life and is in fact surrounded by non-customers. Stop here and think. What is the consequence of that? What does that mean to you? And how radically are you willing to rethink what a business is and does? Comments welcome!
The founders, two people
As this is our first post here, we owe you some information about the two people who founded THE O and believe so strongly in it.
Rose has a versatile background in branding and design. She used to create luxury fashion goods and market them around the world. Originally, she was trained in jewelry design and ran her own label. She believes that all things need to be beautiful. Raised in the UK, she advocates that there are NOT two sets of manners, one for you and for the Queen. Aubergine, not eggplant, out of the oven with a glass of red is the number one thing to expect as a spontaneous dinner guest. And butter needs to be on every table. Every table. Her easily sunburnt skin hides her fiery, probably Brazilian soul that swirls around her body miraculously when Latin rhythms can be heard. She likes stages: theathers, musicals, catwalks and dog runs alike.
Christian has extensive experience in creating software-supported solutions that make people’s lives easier. He managed projects from specification through testing and training. And he believes simplicity is beauty. Raised in Austria and Switzerland, Christian couldn’t escape loving the mountains, cheese and chocolate. Having lived in and traveled to other places in the world, he has since added scuba diving and many other food favorites. Christian needs the buzz of a big city in his veins and constantly overbooks his calendar with concerts, shows, events and social gatherings. He usually finds too little time to read, but in his constant pursuit of efficiency started listening to a variety of podcasts at almost double speed. He is constantly trying to discover new music and likes science, all kind of behavioral psychology and making the world a slightly better place, person by person.
The non-founders, people too
Business founders can only be as good as the people around them allow them to be. We were extremely lucky that we received so much support from so many people to date.
There are all our closest friends that have been with us for so many years and have been with us ever since we started this project. There is our family. Family is family. Never forget.
And there were people who actually lent their hands and their brains to help us. Interns, volunteers, former colleagues and friends that got involved.
We were also lucky to be part of fantastic small and big communities. We met at IE Business School in Madrid and made many good friends there. All you IMBA people, you are amazing! You have been a bigger and better support network around the world that we could have ever wished for. Some of the professors lent us their time to advise us in their field of expertise. Alumni supported us with their knowledge and network.
We benefited from the effort of the city of Madrid to attract international entrepreneurs and had the privilege to work for free from Madrid International Lab, a beautiful co-working space full of young, talented and hungry people. Muchas gracias!
In Berlin, we found home in Weserland, maybe the most unreal co-working space in the world. And the one with the best coffee. And we frequented Betahaus and other quickly growing communities and their events. Vielen Dank!
We met so many people all over the world that passed on a name and made an intro, that sat down with us for a coffee, that keep spreading the word for us as I am writing these lines. In New York, the meetup groups and the events at co-working spaces were incredible at times. So much talent and energy!
We are endlessly grateful to each and everyone of you beautiful people. You keep writing this story with us! Not for customers, not for users, not for readers. For people.
