DON’T WAIT → MADENCER
TITLE: Don’t wait.
TAGGING: gryffindorspence and ravenclawmadison
WHEN & WHERE: At the bench they met at during the dance, just before the end of the term.
NOTES: Madison asks Spencer to meet her so she can finally confess something to him.
Spencer left his room right after Madison texted him, heading for the place they had met after the dance. The place they had kissed. He pushed those thoughts out of his mind, jogging to meet her. He didn't know what Madison wanted to talk about. Maybe she was done tutoring him. Part of him felt sad at that idea. He didn't know why. He didn't even like Madison that much. And he had... well, not a relationship with Bree, but something. He slipped out of the castle, arriving at the place they had agreed on before Madison did. He was surprised. He was sure she'd be here first. He sat down on the bench and pulled out his phone, hoping she'd get there soon.
Madison knew that this was ironic that she had chosen the place they had kissed to be the place where she'd tell him how she felt. Of course we knew how ironic it was. To control her nerves as she made her way to the place they'd met previously, Madison tried to control her breathing. In, and out, in and out. Rumours told her that something was going on between Spencer and Bree and Madison didn't care about that. Well, she did. Of course she did. Hearing the new had hurt more than she could have imagined. But right now all she wanted was for Spencer to know. And for him to know, and leave her alone. By the time she arrived, Madison had worked herself into a state. "Hi." She told him, keeping her distance from him. Madison couldn't be near him. She just... Couldn't.
Spencer nodded at Madison when she finally showed up, giving her a quick nod. "Hey, Mads - Madison." He corrected himself. The nickname was too... chummy. They weren't mates. Well, they got along kinda, but it was still awkward at times and they had kissed. "What's up?" He asked, stuffing his hand in his pockets. Maybe he could hear the news and leave. Being this close to Madison affected him in a way he wished didn't exist. It would be easier if he had no feelings for her, if he could just concentrate on Bree. But life never seemed to work that way. "Do you not want to tutor me next year or something?" It wouldn't be a big deal. He could find a new tutor. He knew something was wrong, she was standing pretty far away from him.
Madison knew that getting this out of the way would be easier for them both. The overall sweet talking and 'how are yous' didn't suit her nature and she knew that it didn't suit Spencer either. Butterflies filled her stomach as she fiddled with her hands unsurely. It wasn't like she hadn't been over this a million times in her head. Except now her brain was blanking on her, which had never happened before. Spencer's question surprised Madison; causing her ever-so-famous eyebrow raise. "What?!" She asked a little too quickly, an edge to her voice. How could he think that? "No, no, of course not." She kept her distance still, her breathing more quick and rapid. All she could think about was him and Bree. Them kissing, doing more, oh Merlin she needed to stop thinking about that before she drove herself insane. This wasn't helping, it just hurt more. "I'm just going to come right out and say it okay?" Her voice was husky, but quick and rushed.
Spencer shot Madison a confused look, not sure why she was acting so weird. What the hell was up with her fiddling with her hands and acting all shy. He didn't know what was wrong. "Well, you said you had to tell me something important." He reminded her with another shrug. "Unless you're telling me you're dying, I don't know what's so important." He had wracked his brain for what it could possibly be and had come up with nothing. Madison needed to just tell him. "Okay, cool. So are you gonna tell me or leave me in suspense?" The suspense was getting annoying. He wished she'd come closer or something, even if he didn't like the idea of being so close to her. "Alright say it. Stop pussy footing, Madison." He knew it came out a bit harsh, but she needed to stop looking like the world was ending or something. He was admittedly a bit worried.
Madison couldn't look at him because she knew that the expression he was wearing, full of confusion and irritation, would soon be changed to one of knowledge and -- Madison assumed -- disgust. She was glad that It was the last glad. Madison had never been more grateful for a Summer Holiday more. She could pour herself and her time into Quidditch, and Studying, and preparing for Fifth Year. She had time to actually get over Spencer and, she assumed, never speak to him again. That was okay. Madison assured herself that she could forget about it, "This is all your fault, okay. You messed up my perfectly planned schedule and now look where we are." She told him, finally daring to look him in the eye. "I like you, okay? More than I should do and more than I'm willing to admit." Swallowing, Madison continued, not allowing him to speak or get a word in edge ways. "I realise it's stupid-- believe me, I do. It's more than stupid and I can assure you that before now I have never done anything like this before. Planning in advance is my thing, you know? And I did not plan for this to happen so I... I just wanted you to know, okay?" Her words were getting more rambly, more hurried and her gaze had been diverted; looking anywhere but at him. "I know you have a thing going on with her so I guess I just wanted you to know. Um-- Yeah, that's it." She bit down on her lower lip, letting out a shaky breath before taking a few steps back, her eyes anywhere but on him. The rapid wind circling around the castle made her feel dizzy and she felt like she was going to be sick. "Have a good summer." She told Spencer, daring to look into his eyes for what Madison assumed would be the last time, before turning on her heel and hurriedly walking away.
Spencer could only share at Madison in disbelief as she talked. The idea that Madison McCarthy would have a crush on him... he was pretty sure she was playing a prank on him. No, he was confident she was. Madison had to like some other guy, not him. But her refusal to tell him who she liked at least made sense. "I - what?" He asked, sputtering for something to say. He didn't get how exactly he messed up her schedule but he imagined it was normal Madison weirdness that he didn't want to even begin to try to understand. He didn't know why she'd like him. He was a dick to her most times. But all he could really do is watch her ramble. He felt a stab of guilt as she mentioned whatever he had going with Bree, not knowing if he should say anything. Granted, he didn't think he could get a word in. "Wait, Madison!" He finally managed to say when she walked away, stopping himself from running after her. It didn't matter if she liked him. They weren't meant to be. He couldn't tell her that he liked her. It was better to just enjoy his summer and forget about her. To concentrate on Quidditch. He could spend the summer doing other stuff and ignore her next year, find a new tutor, or something. He balled his fists up and glared at the ground, trying to ignore the sadness that was coming over him. Fuck. Why did he have to care so much?

THIS LOSING GAME → MADENCER
TITLE: This Losing Game
TAGGING: gryffindorspence and ravenclawmadison
WHEN & WHERE: Just outside Hogwarts, after the dance.
NOTES: Madison and Spencer spend some time together after the dance. Basically they kiss omg.
Spencer couldn’t help but roll his eyes as he watched Madison stop and talk to people. He drank his punch carefully, resisting the urge to tap his foot impatiently. He didn’t understand why she had to be so damn so friendly. It was like she enjoyed talking to everyone in sight and annoying him in the process. After what seemed like forever, she finally managed to make her way over to him. Spencer raised an eyebrow back at her, taking another sip of his drink as he watched her pour herself a glass of punch. He nodded at her comment as he placed his cup down on the table. He cleared his throat, almost nervously, gesturing to the outside. “Do you want to get some air or something?” If it was anyone else, he might have asked if they wanted to hang out for a bit but he didn’t want Madison thinking too much into it.
Madison wasn’t really sure why she had decided to stop along the way to talk to people, yet she had. During one conversation she cast an eye over to where Spencer was and noticed how impatient he looked. “Ill totally catch you later, cupcake!” She told a girl, before spinning on her heel. When Spencer mentioned getting some air, Madison swallowed and shrugged slightly, “Sure thing.” She was glad she was hyper; knowing that she’d be exhausted otherwise and unable to stay awake. “Lead the way, cowboy.” Madison figured that Spencer would end up objecting to her nickname, but she didn’t really mind at that point. She swirled the drink in her glass round and round, her eyes following as she waited for Spencer to reply or lead the way. Anything, really.
Spencer wasn’t sure if he expected Madison to agree or not to go get some air. Granted, they weren’t arguing for once so that might be part of it. Being around Madison wasn’t bad when they weren’t tearing each other’s throats. He couldn’t help but shake his head at her nickname for him but for once, he kept his thoughts to himself. Maybe for once he didn’t want a night with Madison to end with them fighting. He was tired already and he didn’t really need an argument on top it. “C'mon.” He said, grabbing her hand and pulling her outside with him. He walked quickly to the doors of the entrance hall, dropping her hand to push them open. He didn’t want to risk being yelled at for breaking curfew or anything. “Where do you wanna go?” Spencer asked Madison, glancing backwards as the cool air hit his face.
Madison hadn’t really had time to really think about what they were doing, and she knew that if they were found out, they’d probably get into some sort of trouble. It’s not like Madison really minded at that point because she really did want some fresh air after the hectic nature of the dance. She made her way briskly to the entrance door beside Spencer. As soon as they were outside, however, Madison found herself shivering. Dang it, she hadn’t thought about how cold it might have been. Folding her arms, she thought for a second, “I don’t know. Somewhere no ones going to end up catching us out and getting us into trouble.”
Spencer knew that they should both try their best to be quiet. It’s not like they were doing anything that bad, but that didn’t mean he really wanted to get caught and face punishment. He had a feeling Madison would get pissy at him if he managed to get her into trouble. It seemed like he spent most of his time these days avoiding pissing Madison off. He didn’t know how he felt about that. He noticed her shivering and felt slightly bad. He didn’t think it was that cold out, after all it was hitting closer to summer, but Madison was also a lot smaller than he was. “Do you want to go back in?” Spencer asked her, raising an eyebrow in question. He gestured farther along the lake, where they’d be out of the view of the castle. “We could go over there, by the trees, if you want.”
Madison glanced over where Spencer was gesturing and felt a little more relieved. It was a little more out of sight than where they currently were and wouldn’t mean she’d be constantly looking over her shoulder like she was right now. The silence surrounding them both in comparison to the loud noises from the dance was eery, and she looked up at the sky before swallowing. “It’s not really that cold, it’s okay.” She told Spencer with a small shrug, while she then proceeded to not at his next suggestions, “Good idea. We don’t want to get caught." Madison knew how important her reputation with the teachers at Hogwarts was. She could not afford to get into any trouble at all; especially so close to the end of the year. What on earth would Mason think? He’d assume the worst. After all, it was Spencer.
Spencer realized how this would look if someone caught them. They had just gone to the dance together after all and now here they were, sneaking off afterward. The idea that he could be interested in Madison… that just wouldn’t happen. It couldn’t help. Madison McCarthy was definitely not his type. It was quiet though, just the two of them and maybe being here with her made his heart pound than he’d care to admit it did. "Alright.” He replied with a shrug. If he had had jacket, he would have given it to her. Not because he liked her, but because he imagined hearing her teeth chatter would be annoying as hell. “C'mon.” He said, taking her hand again and leading her towards the trees. He told himself he had grabbed her hand because he didn’t need her trailing after him slowly, but part of him liked holding her hand. He wondered if he had hit his head at the dance. He must have.
Madison had noticed already just how bad this was going to look if someone realized where they were. She hadn’t even told Mason what was going on, she’d just briefly mentioned needing to sort out her dress and leaving it at that. She figured Spencer wouldn’t at all be pleased if people got the wrong idea about this, neither would she really. The way the darkness surrounded them and the feeling that– however weird it sounded– they were the only people outside at that point. It was weird and comforting and mesmerizing all at the same time, which somehow managed to make Madison’s heart leap. The way in which Spencer grabbed her hand wasn’t helping at all and she was glad he wasn’t looking straight at her, because the crimson blush on her cheeks had returned and my god did she feel insane. “Why are you holding my hand?” She asked, just as they reached the smaller cluster of trees.
Spencer glanced down at their hands like he was seeing them for the first time. He definitely did not blush, but he could tell he was getting pretty close to it. He dropped her hand like it was poisonous and stuck his hands in the pockets of his pants, avoiding Madison’s eyes. “I wasn’t holding your hand.” Spencer protested, shaking his head vehemently. “I grabbed it. There’s a difference.” He would not hold Madison’s hand. Why would he even want to? Hand holding was for couples and they were definitely not a couple. They would never be a couple. He didn’t want to be Madison McCarthy’s boyfriend. He looked around, not sure what to say now that it was obvious they were the only two around. What exactly was he supposed to talk to Madison about? Yeah, they had had a good time at the dance, but most of their conversations ended in fights. He cleared his throat, hoping she wouldn’t pick up on his nervousness. “Did you have a good time at the dance?” He finally asked, leaning against one of the trees as he looked at her.
Madison could see that whenever she tended to call Spencer out on things, he’d get mad and insult her. At least, that’s what kept happening anyway. Whenever she tried to ask why Spencer did what he did, he got annoyed or defensive. He definitely confused Madison beyond doubt. She had no idea where they even stood. She let her hands fall to her sides, not exactly knowing what to say. Silence fell upon them just as easily as laughter had fallen from her lips during the dance. When Spencer finally spoke, she swallowed and smiled, regardless. She was a McCarthy. Dang, she couldn’t show weakness. That’s not what she did. “It was super fun,” she replied. “Thank you for going with me, Spencer.” She looked across at him and smiled.
Spencer knew that Madison probably found his behavior odd. He just couldn’t help but get defensive when it came to Madison. He always seemed to say the wrong thing when it came to her. He confused himself and he had no doubt he confused her more than a little. But there was no point mentioning it, avoiding it was the best option. He tried to ignore the smile she flashed him, looking away again. He really wished he didn’t like her smile. “Yeah, well, it was an okay time.” He said, trying to sound casual and not like he liked her at all. Not even as a friend, much less as more. “You weren’t the worst date. I didn’t step on your toes too much, did I?” Not that Spencer cared about stepping on her toes, he just didn’t want everyone thinking he was a terrible dancer. He might not be the best but he definitely didn’t want to be terrible.
Madison had tried to adapt to the attitude off ‘he doesn’t care so neither do I’ whenever she was around Spencer. That was definitely something that helped an awful lot, except on some occasions she forgot and slipped up. She realized that Spencer and hers– whatever this was, would probably be cut short after the ball, and honestly, she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. “No, you didn’t.” She replied with a small chuckle; she had been pleasantly surprised at how Spencer’s dancing had improved. Silence overwhelmed them again, so she quickly added, “So what d'you wanna do?” She looked around and shivered again. Dang, it really was freezing out here. She folded her arms across her chest and turned to Spencer, not really sure what he was expecting from this. It was too late to try and figure him out, anyway. Not that she ever could; as soon as she tried to figure him out he closed off again.
Spencer had worried more than he’d care to admit in the days leading up to the dance. He wasn’t used to worrying about things, especially anything that had to do with Madison. “Good. I mean, you’re so tiny, I wouldn’t want to hurt you.” He flashed her a smirk, stretching his arms over his head. Madison wasn’t the smallest, after all Rachel Berry was basically the hobbit, but she was still a lot shorter than he was. He was startled out of his thoughts by Madison’s words. He didn’t know exactly what they could do. It was later after all and well past the time they should be out. What could they even do. “I don’t know - what do you want to do?” He knew it was a cop out but he wasn’t exactly sure what Madison’s idea of fun was other than holding hands with her brother and singing sappy love songs to him. Spencer shot Madison a worried look, stepping closer to her. His hands hovered over her arms, not sure what to do. He was tempted to take off his dress robe and hand it to her since he had a shirt underneath it, but he didn’t know if that was too coupley or not. “We can go back if you want.” Spencer wished he wasn’t so caught between being nice to her and being rude to her.
Madison definitely found herself a lot more worried that she probably should have been for this dance, and it wasn’t a surprise to her that she now felt like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders now that it was over. While many of her friends in Ravenclaw had tried convincing her that her dress looked perfect, she just hadn’t been able to relax and it confused her. “I’m not that small, you’re just a little bit too tall.” Madison shot him a teasing smirk back, because she’d never really been called small before. Of course, she’d never actually hung over with a boy properly before– other than Ryder, who was more than likely too friendly to comment on her height. She thought for a second, trying to think of something actually interesting– of course, this just had to be the day her mind was completely blank and lost for ideas. “Umm, it’s kinda late, so it’s a little difficult to do anything actually fun.” She shrugged, looking around. “We could just talk, I guess? Talking’s fun.” When Spencer shot her a worried look, Madison wasn’t really sure what to think; but as he stepped closer to her, she breathed in sharply, unsure of what to do. His unexpected action confused her yet again, but she didn’t question. “It’s fine, don’t worry about it.” She would get used to the weather, she always did, it just took some time. Even if she did end up getting a cold, or a flu, or whatnot, Madison really couldn’t find it in herself to actually mind. For a brief moment, she wondered where Mason what– what he’d be doing, if he was worried about her and where she was. Biting down on her a lower lip, Madison felt a pang of guilt.
Spencer couldn’t deny that even after the dance, Madison still looked pretty. It wasn’t anything he’d say to her, but Madison was prettier than most girls he saw around Hogwarts. He didn’t know how he felt about thinking that. He should hate both of the twins, not find them attractive. But more often than not, he had to force himself to remember that. “6’ isn’t tall.” He retorted, knowing that wasn’t exactly true. He had always been kind of tall for his age, and he knew 6’ at barely 15 was taller than some people. He just wasn’t a midget like Blaine. But then, he also wasn’t a giant like Hudson was. He waited impatiently as Madison obviously thought of something to do. There was only so long they could just stand here, staring at each other. It was already getting old. It wasn’t like he really wanted to keep gazing into her eyes like this was some dumb chick flick or rom-com or something. He wouldn’t be surprised if Madison did want some sort of romance that was straight out of the Notebook. That would be just like her. “True.” Spencer replied with a shrug, not sure what else he was supposed to say. A thought came to mind a second later and he shot her a sly grin. “I mean, we could always go skinny dipping in the lake.” He didn’t think Madison would ever agree but maybe he just wanted to make her blush. It was probably a little too cold for swimming anyways and the last thing he wanted was to encounter the giant squid or merpeople or whatever. “What do you want to talk about?” He shot her a puzzled frown. They didn’t exactly have a lot in common after all, other than maybe Quidditch. “Do you want my dress robes or something?” He wasn’t concerned about her, not at all. He didn’t want her to think he liked or something. He noticed her biting her lip and struggled to keep his face straight. She was oddly attractive when she did that. “What’s wrong, McCarthy? Pining over your brother?” Okay, maybe he couldn’t help but be a jerk to her.
Madison wasn’t sure why she hadn’t just suggested returning back to the castle again, yet the thought just hadn’t crossed her mind until now– and she didn’t really want to. The situation wasn’t entirely ideal, to say at the least; she was hanging out with Spencer, a guy she wasn’t even supposed to be friends with, who strongly disliked her and her brother, in the freezing cold. Added to that, they could be caught at any moment. But Spencer didn’t seem to care about that. So neither should she, right? Madison wasn’t so sure. “It totally is tall! Are you even fifteen yet? You’re definitely tall for your age.” She scoffed, rolling her eyes playfully. Of course, Madison knew that there were many other students at Hogwarts a lot taller than Spencer, but she wasn’t going to mention that. Finn, for example, would have been one, but there were many others she’d seen but never spoken to. Her eyes widened at Spencer’s idea and her jaw dropped. Oh, My Merlin, she thought to herself, completely shocked. She stared at him for a few seconds, completely gobsmacked. As if on cue, a bright red blush formed across her cheeks and she hit his arm lightly, not wanting to hurt him. “We are not doing that, Spencer!” She responded, still flustered and unable to actually be annoyed. It wasn’t like she’d never skinny dipped before– it was totally fun. But not right now, in a lake, in the freezing cold– with SPENCER PORTER. That was definitely not something Madison was going to agree to. She scanned her mind quickly for something to talk about, “What’s your favorite movie?” She asked curiously, looking across at him again. Movies were good, she concluded, at least that way she could at least keep up a small conversation. “Oh! That’s okay– Thank you, though, I guess?” He puzzled her, but once again, Madison couldn’t find the energy to question it. She’d probably do that in the morning. Shaking her head at him, Madison honestly couldn’t believe Spencer had figured out who she was thinking about. Seconds later and laughter was sounding from her lips, unable to actually reply to him properly. “Sh-ut Up, Spencer.” She laughed, biting down on her lower lip in an attempt to stop laughing. She wasn’t even why she was laughing; just the whole situation seemed suddenly comical.
Spencer expected that Madison would get tired of him and leave at any moment. That was usually how their meetings ended, with one of them getting angry at the other one and someone storming angrily off. He was used to it. They didn’t seem to actually be able to hold a conversation with each other that didn’t seem to end in them going at each other’s throats. Part of him enjoyed the banter, enjoyed the fact that Madison was so much wittier than she came across. That she was more than just smiles and cheerfulness. Constant happiness got annoying after a while but knowing that Madison was deeper than that made her oddly attractive to him. As long as Madison didn’t seem likely to run any moment, he wasn’t planning on leaving. He just couldn’t understand why not. “Of course I’m 15.” He told her with a roll of his eyes. “I had my birthday 8 days ago.” He didn’t have a big party like Madison did though and his birthday had been eclipsed by the Gryffindor and Slytherin match. People had been so down after the loss that no one had really paid attention to his birthday and he hadn’t really cared. He had been pretty bummed about the match and the fact that he didn’t get to play. It was a bit weird to think that Madison was older than he was though. “You’re just tiny, you should accept it.” He got the reaction he had been waiting for when Madison’s jaw dropped and she began blushing. That was the exact reaction he wanted and he didn’t bother to not smirk at her. Spencer laughed as she hit his arm, leaning back against the tree. “What, not interested in getting naked for me, Madison?” He teased her lightly, knowing he was getting a little flirty and not particularly caring about it. He could just brush it off as him trying to give her a hard time anyways. “Favorite movie?” He repeated her question as he tried to think about his favorite movie. “Either Fight Club or one of the Fast and the Furious movies.” He liked his movies actiony and exciting, he didn’t think that’d be much of a surprise to Madison. “What’s yours? Flowers in the Attic?” Maybe he just wanted to see her blush again. “Okay, whatever.” Spencer replied nonchalantly, with a shrug of his shoulders as if he didn’t care. “Wait, you were really daydreaming about your brother? Is Flowers in the Attic really your favorite movie? Don’t tell me your brother isn’t why you’re into Ryder.” He wasn’t being serious, but part of him was curious why she wasn’t into Ryder. He thought he’d be her type of guy.
Madison couldn’t really explain to herself why Spencer hadn’t left yet. Perhaps he was just bored? Or something like that. Part of her wondered if this was some kind of a joke to him, but she tried not to think about that element of it. If Madison was being completely honest, she’d say that most of the time, she enjoyed spending time with him. They challenged each other, which is something Madison had never experienced before– what with her parents barely being around, and the majority of her friends being as bubbly as she was. Yet this was difference. Spencer didn’t agree with everything she said, and maybe that wasn’t a bad thing. “Just checking.” She had a twinkle in her eye as she spoke, her tone teasing and playful. Madison had felt sympathetic towards Spencer when his birthday had been gatecrashed by a Quidditch match, especially since they hadn’t even one– nor had Spencer been able to play at all. When he called her tiny, Madison rolled her eyes at him, “You’re just rude.” His smirk definitely proved that his entire intentions were to annoy her by suggesting skinny dipping, especially since he didn’t even bother to hide it at all. He definitely enjoyed annoying her, nonetheless. Her blush deepened as Spencer spoke again, and she looked away, shaking her head at him. “You’re awful, do you know that?” Madison wasn’t really sure if this counted as flirting or not–perhaps it did? She’d have to ask Quinn or Kitty about this, they’d surely know. Would she even tell anyone about this? Her thoughts were cut short when Spencer replied, and she nodded. While she had never seen Fight Club, she had watched Fast and Furious before– Mason liked it and Madison had found herself not hating it all that much. “The Fast and Furious movies aren’t that awful, are they? I expected them to be but they totally weren’t.” His choice in movies definitely were not a surprise to her, at all. Neither was the fact that he assumed Flowers in the Attic was obviously hers. “Of course not. Flowers in the Attic is definitely quite a concerning film.” Now she was thinking about incest, dang. The thought of her and Mason actually…wefbiewfb, she cringed inwardly. “No! I totally wasn’t!” She quickly added in with a roll of her eyes. How on earth did she explain that she was not attracted to her twin brother at all? “I’m not attracted to Ryder because he’s my friend, obviously.”
Spencer was sure that if anyone asked why he was spending time with Madison, he could come up with some excuse. He could be spending time with her for just more material to make fun of her with. It wasn’t true, but people didn’t really need to know that. Part of him felt a sliver of guilt at the idea that she would think he’d do something like that to her. He didn’t know why, but the idea of her thinking he hated her really bugged him. It made no sense to him, he shouldn’t care what she thought about him. He shouldn’t feel guilty at all. But something about Madison McCarthy drew him to her. He couldn’t put a word on what it was about her that he liked. He shouldn’t even be feeling like this. The idea that he liked Madison at all was just bizarre. What would happen next? Would he suddenly want Mason or something? But he liked how Madison made him feel. How she kept him on his toes, how she challenged him, the way she smiled. It was infuriating, but he couldn’t help it. “I’m not that young.” He defended, glaring at her. Right now, he definitely hated being younger than she was. Why couldn’t he be born earlier or something. “I’m not rude, I’m honest.” Spencer countered, shaking his head. Of course Madison would consider him rude. He was pretty sure she considered everything he did rude. It’s not like he cared, he wasn’t exactly the nicest person and he wasn’t going to hide and pretend he was. “Oh, keep your knickers on, McCarthy.” He teased her, smirking at her. He didn’t know if he ever did want to go skinny dipping with Madison. Something about it just seemed weird. “No, they’re pretty amazing.” He agreed, nodding his head. “I didn’t think you’d watch them.” Spencer admitted to her, giving her an appraising look. Movies about car chases and violence didn’t seem like her cup of tea, anyways. “Well, good. Happy to know you don’t worship it.” He didn’t really think Madison was into her twin brother. He hoped she wasn’t at least. For all the shit he gave them, he didn’t believe half the things he said. “Okay, okay, you’re not into your brother, I got it.” He raised an eyebrow when she said she wasn’t into Ryder because they were friends. “Who are you into then?” For all he knew, she wasn’t into anyone. It was hard to tell with her sometimes.
Madison was almost certain that this was the longest that she and Spencer had spent together without storming off angrily or getting mad at each other. If that was true, she braced herself for the next falling out between them and reminded herself to not say anything too deep and personal before he killed her or something. That wouldn’t be good. The thought of Spencer actually hating her, however true she believed it to be, was weird. If he really hated her, then why on earth did he act so kind-of-friendly towards her? Whatever. She couldn’t put he finger on it and really, she wanted to. She wanted to figure out why he was so snarky and bitter most of the time. She wanted to know why he had formed such a hatred of her when he barely knew her. But she also wanted to know what his purpose of all this was, really. Was there even a purpose? “You are kinda young.” She teased, grinning. “It’s kind of strange that I’m older than you, isn’t it?” Rolling her eyes at his statement about being honest, Madison chose not to reply. Honest her butt. “My knickers are perfectly secure, Porter.” Okay, so somehow this conversation had turned sexual again. Dang. What was it with teenage boys and sex? At least he seemed to approve of her liking of Fast and Furious. “They’re definitely different to the kind of films I like to watch. But they’re a good different.” Madison smiled, remembering back to when she had watched the films with Mason. Suddenly, he was quizzing her on who she liked– and dang, she really didn’t want to admit that. She didn’t want to tell him. Yet she couldn’t lie could she? Lying wasn’t good. Perhaps she could avoid the question or something. “Um–” her cheeks were now positively bright red in embarrassment and she was starting to inwardly panic. “Why do you care who I like, anyway?” Dang, how obvious did she want to be exactly? For all she knew, he was going to tell the whole school or something. She couldn’t tell him because he really hated her and that wasn’t good. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to lie to him either. Could she? “It doesn’t matter who I like really.” Madison quickly added.
Spencer wondered why he was even bothering to spend time with Madison. He knew the school was just as confused on why they went to the dance together. Even if it hadn’t been a date, they weren’t exactly a likely match. He could have seen himself going with anyone who wasn’t Madison. Even if he wasn’t attracted to them, they still would have made more sense than going to a dance with Madison. But she had asked and he had agreed and somehow them going together had happened. “Shut up, I’ll be 17 in no time.” He shot back. The idea of being 17 was kind of unnerving though. He was just about to finish his 4th year at Hogwarts. Next year he’d be going into his OWLs and before he knew it, he’d be graduating. Part of him was excited to do something new and different the idea of graduating and leaving Hogwarts terrified him more than he’d care to admit. He was a Gryffindor. Gryffindors didn’t get scared. They just didn’t. “It is weird.” He finally admitted, trying to force himself to think about something other than growing up. “I thought you’d be younger than me.” That might just be because she was shorter than him though. It was odd to think of someone so much shorter than him as being older. “Are you sure? I mean, I could check if you’re not positive.” Okay, maybe that was definite flirting but he didn’t really think Madison would do anything other than hit him again. The day Madison McCarthy took his playful flirting as anything more than a cruel joke was the day he’d stop torturing her and her brother. So never. “What are your type of films? You never answered.” He was only asking to be polite, not because he actually cared what she liked. After all, she had asked what his favorite movie was, it was only fair to actually listen to what hers was. He had no doubt it was some kind of chick flick or Rom-Com. Something light and funny. He couldn’t really see her being into anything depressing. She didn’t seem the type. “Because I’m curious and you’re making me more curious now that you won’t tell me.” He didn’t like not winning something and now he wanted to prod her until she admitted who she liked. “That makes me think it does matter. Do you like someone you’re not supposed to?” He believed her when she said it wasn’t her brother so who could she like. “You’re not into some girl and your parents are really homophobic or something?” He didn’t exactly know what Madison’s sexuality was. He didn’t exactly pay attention to it. For all he knew, she really was into girls.
Madison had had enough of the inner conflict running through her mind, especially since her mind couldn’t exactly think straight at that moment. She was flustered, unable to act like the usual calm and collected Madison. The mention of their age reminded her just how little time they actually had left at Hogwarts; after all, they were taking their OWL’s next year. That was a scary enough thought. Regardless of how much revision she had done this previous year, Madison knew that the next year would be a challenge and a half. She wondered if Spencer would still want her to tutor him next year. While he’d made a steady improvement since she’d been, well, 'teaching him’, she wasn’t sure if they’d still even be friends next year. “It’s kind of strange how quickly this year has gone, isn’t it?” She blurted out with a shrug. “Like, we’re taking our OWL’s next year. Weird, right?” It was a little odd how much smaller than him she was, especially since she was supposedly older than him. Either way, Madison wasn’t sure if she acted older than him. She prided herself on her maturity, but she didn’t know. If it was even possible, she felt her cheeks redden and she glared across at him playfully, whacking his arm again. “I am perfectly sure!” This was definitely flirting, Madison concluded. This had to be the weirdest of nights. She needed to sleep this off before her cheeks continued getting worse and the butterflies killed her stomach. Dang. “Oh, I have such a strange taste in films. I like most of them– except for the scary ones, because those are, well, a little scary. But romance movies are totally cute. So are comedy films– I have this definite addiction to 22 Jump Street just because of how super cute Channing Tatum was in those films.” That wasn’t a lie at all. She loved those films; although, she would admit she loved Channing Tatum’s abs more than anything. The fact that Spencer was curious annoyed her, and she wished he didn’t care because she really didn’t want to lie to him. Dang. “I’m not a lesbian, you numpty.” She replied with a roll of her eyes. “And my parents aren’t homophobic; not really!”
Spencer looked past Madison at the lake, hoping she wouldn’t notice the look on his face at the mention of OWLs next year. Madison was brilliant, she was a Ravenclaw, he was sure she’d do amazing on her OWLs no matter what. He couldn’t exactly say he would do the same. Even with Madison helping him, he wasn’t the best at studying. He knew enough to know he wasn’t dumb, schoolwork just didn’t exactly interest him. He didn’t find reading books or studying fun at all. “It did go by really quick.” He agreed, finally meeting her eyes again. “I could do without OWLs though. I know what I want to do.” It would be easier if he got scouted by a professional Quidditch team but he knew if he didn’t and had to immediately go work for the Ministry, he’d need better grades. He didn’t even know what kind of grades he needed for Magical Games and Sports, he figured he’d find out next year so there was no point worrying about it. “What do you want to do? In the future, I mean.” He was a bit curious about what Madison’s dream job was. He couldn’t really imagine what she wanted to do in the future. Spencer backed away slightly when she smacked his arm, smirking at her. He had expected that after all so it wasn’t like it hurt. He didn’t really think she’d hit him hard enough to do any damage. He was certain he was stronger than she was regardless, so it didn’t matter. “Alright, alright, just checking.” His eyes met hers for a moment and he looked away. Damn. He was thinking about her birthday party again and the near kiss. He couldn’t help but wonder what it’d be like to kiss Madison. She wouldn’t be the worst person to kiss, he was sure. “You have strange taste in everything.” He told her dryly, taking in her taste in films. Her not being into scary movies wasn’t really shocking and he noted that he was right on her being into comedy and romance. “Channing Tatum, really? He looks like a potato.” He might be bisexual but that didn’t mean he found Channing Tatum attractive at all. Maybe Madison did have terrible taste. “I didn’t ask if you were a lesbian. Anyways, bisexuality is a thing.” Though she hadn’t shown any interest in girls at all so maybe she was straight. “It’s good that your parents don’t suck.” He had gotten lucky on that count too at least, even if they didn’t exactly always understand it. “So, what guy do you like? You should just tell me.” Spencer knew he was prodding her but he was curious now. He just wasn’t sure if she’d give in and actually tell him.
Madison noticed Spencer’s sudden change in attitude and tried to figure out what he was thinking. She knew that whenever she pushed him on things he was touchy about, she got snapped at and insulted as a result– yet she couldn’t help but feel curious. She debated whether or not questioning him was a good idea, and decided that there was nothing really to loose, was there? Moments later, however, and his eyes were on her again. The mention of OWL’s between them had clearly caused some friction– perhaps he was worried about them? Madison knew for sure that she was. Who wouldn’t be nervous when they were so crucially important?! “Aren’t you super scared about them? I know I am!” She wondered what Spencer wanted to do once he had left Hogwarts. It wasn’t something they ever spoke about, not that she expected them to. Her curiosity really didn’t help her sometimes. She couldn’t think of what his answer would be. Perhaps it had something to do with Quidditch, as he supposedly loved the sport? His question came with a quick response, however, “I know this sounds a little odd, but I’m conflicted as to what I want to do in the future. I guess I’m just trying to do as well as I can and see where that leads me.” The fact that she still was clueless to her future career was a little daunting to Madison; who was a girl led purely by organisation and a set goal. Many nights had been spent debating, tossing and turning in her bed as she tried to decide. Yet still, no decision had been made and it infuriated her. “Mm, okay.” When his eyes met hers for a brief moment, she felt the familiar sensation of butterflies build up in her stomach– something of which brought her back to the night of her birthday party, when he had nearly kissed her. It was so strange how long ago that was now, yet she could still remember it vividly. “Oh is that so?” She questioned with a raised eyebrow across at him, her tone light and disbelieving. His mocking of Channing Tatum made her laugh, however and she pouted and rolled her eyes at his comments. “Are you serious? Have you not seen his abs?” Madison definitely had had a major crush on the actor for a while now. The mention of her being a lesbian made her shrug slightly, “I know it is, obviously. I guess I just know that I’m not into girls.” Her sexuality had never really been a question for her, she’d just known who she was and had stuck to that. Perhaps that made her narrow minded– yet she’d never properly thought about it before. Dang it, Madison thought to herself, he’s not going to let this go. Her stubborn nature told her that giving in and telling the truth was not the right thing to do in this situation, so instead she grinned teasingly at him and shook her head. “Nope! I don’t want to tell you-” she thought for a second before quickly adding, “it’s nothing personal, of course, it’s just a secret."
Spencer wondered if Madison was going to try to push him on what was bugging him. She loved to push his buttons and get inside his head after all. He just chalked it up to Madison being a typical annoying Ravenclaw. He didn’t understand why most of them were so damn annoying. He didn’t actively hate Ravenclaws or not get along with them like he did with most Slytherins, but most of them irritated the hell out of him at any given moment. Kitty, Blaine, Madison, all of them really needed to shut up sometimes. Spencer sighed at her comment, not sure what to say. "No. I’m not scared.” He finally said, rolling his eyes again. He seemed to always be rolling his eyes at her. “Gryffindors don’t get scared at every little thing.” Granted, they didn’t exactly do well at testing either. And if Madison was terrified about OWLs, it definitely made him wonder if he should be. Maybe he would need her to tutor him next year too. He hadn’t exactly thought about that. He had always imagined it would be just for this year and then he’d never need to talk to her again. He didn’t know if he wanted to avoid Madison anymore even if he disliked Mason. Something about her was just… magnetic. “Fuck.” Spencer mumbled under his breath as those thoughts went through his head, hoping Madison hadn’t heard. He had not just called Madison McCarthy magnetic. He was pretty sure he had hit his head. He raised his eyebrows at Madison when she said she was unsure about her future. “You don’t know what you want to do?” His voice was full of disbelief. He thought Madison had had her entire life planned out from the moment she could write. He didn’t think she’d be someone who wasn’t sure what to do about her future. The idea that he knew what he wanted to do and she didn’t seemed like an impossible thing. He let the mention of skinny dipping drop, not really wanting to continue to think of Madison naked. It’d be just his luck if she noticed something was off and started questioning him. He was sure she wouldn’t rest until she had tortured everything out of him. “It is so, you’re pretty weird.” He argued, his lips pursing together. He found most things Madison did pretty weird though. “I just don’t like his face. His body is okay, but his face freaks me out.” He just didn’t understand what drove girls crazy about him. He was definitely hotter than Channing Tatum. “Anyways, my abs are just as good and I have a decent face.” He shrugged when she said she wasn’t into girls. He didn’t really care what she was into. “Why won’t you tell me?” Now he was definitely curious. He had an idea though and he walked closer to her until he was inches from her. “You’re not into me, are you, McCarthy?” He didn’t think Madison really did like him but he had no problems with pushing her buttons and making her uncomfortable. Being this close to her made him remember her birthday party and nearly kissing her. It would be so easy to kiss her. But why did he want to? He wasn’t into Madison. Not at all.
Madison knew that Spencer’s education must be at least a little important to him. He wouldn’t be having tutoring lessons with her otherwise. It’s not like he would willingly spend time with her– Spencer and Madison were two opposite people. While he seemingly found joy in torturing others and making snarky comments and referring to her and Mason as the 'invest twins’, Madison liked looking at life positively and viewing everyone as new friends. If it wasn’t for her helping him with his schoolwork, they would have never spoken to each other. He would have just been another Gryffindor to her. Another person in her classes and no one she really needed to befriend. Her eyes widened when he admitted he wasn’t scared. How on earth wasn’t he scared? Madison was terrified. It was true, however, that Gryffindor’s were immensely brave. “Oh, well, that makes sense. Yet I’m sure Gryffindor’s would be terrified of exams? They’re extremely important, you know.” Merlin, she was starting to live up to her Ravenclaw expectations and caring way too much about exams. Yet they were important. Extremely so. The transformation of Spencer’s attitude didn’t shock Madison like it used to have done. Spencer muttered something that sounded an awful lot like 'fuck’ under his breath, shocking Madison entirely. “Is everything alright, Spencer?” She asked, her tone a lot softer and sympathetic than before. She wondered what she had done to trigger his change of attitude this time. Was her hair looking awful, with the wind rushing through it? She felt it nervously, unsure of what else to do. So, perhaps admitting to Spencer about her confusion regarding her future wasn’t the best idea, of course. He seemed so sure of his, however, while she lay uncertain– there were many paths she needed to consider, none of which she could make up her mind about. Shaking her head, she answered, “Not at all. There’s no rush, though.” She was, however, glad to hear that he had let the skinny dipping conversation drop. That wasn’t something she enjoyed talking about at all. “Okay, so maybe I am pretty weird. Why is that a bad thing?” She defended herself shrugging lightly. The insults towards Channing Tatum made her pout slightly, nonetheless. “His face is awesome, shut up!” She snapped, grinning. Gosh, she couldn’t understand how anyone could not like his face? Did Spencer have that awful of a taste? …Wait, Spencer had abs? What? Since when did he have abs? Her eyes automatically travelled to his chest, and she raised an eyebrow skeptically. She was teasing, of course. She shrugged, her body expressions stiffening as he questioned what she didn’t want to answer. Stubbornly, she shook her head and turned away from him. She couldn’t answer. She didn’t want to. She couldn’t. That was until he took steps closer to her and she breathed in sharply. Frick. Her heart was racing at how close he was to her an it was stopping her from actually thinking straight. Dkaksksksk. “What? No. It’s not you.” She stuttered over her words, not even convincing herself as she spoke. She couldn’t admit it, even now. Perhaps how her face had gone a crimson shade and how her heart was hammering against her chest would give it away. She hoped not, nonetheless.
Spencer had to force himself to look anywhere but Madison, licking his lips nervously. It was a bad habit of his and the reason his mother could usually tell he was lying. That and apparently he had a habit of looking around nervously, which he realized he was doing at the moment. He cursed under his breath and met Madison’s eyes, keeping his face neutral. “I’m not a Ravenclaw. My biggest focus isn’t how many O’s I get.” Not that he really expected to get any, but he definitely wasn’t that worried about his grades. “I’m not terrified.” He reiterated, knowing his voice was probably a little more forceful than it should be. He didn’t really need - or want - Madison stomping off again. It seemed to be something she did any time he even remotely raised his voice at her. Spencer almost swore again when he realized Madison had heard what he had muttered underneath his breath but he resisted the urge. He didn’t need her looking at him like he needed to spend a stint at St. Mungo’s. It’d be funny to have one of the oddest people at the castle think he was crazy - no, scratch that, it wouldn’t be funny at all. The last thing he needed was Madison looking at him with concerned eyes and talking to him in low, worried tones. He’d rather claw his eyes out than deal with that. “I know you’re allergic to swearing but usually when people do it, it doesn’t mean anything bad.” He snapped, looking around for some excuse for his swearing. “I thought something had crawled on my foot.” The lie was a weak one at best but hopefully she wouldn’t notice that. “Yeah, whatever, I guess you have time.” He didn’t really care about Madison’s preoccupation over a future career path. It wasn’t his issue and it wasn’t like she wouldn’t find something to do. And they were only 4th years - well, soon to be 5th years. “It really isn’t, but I accept you have terrible taste.” Spencer teased lightly, his face falling into a frown when he realized her giving him a skeptical eye at his ab comment. “Oh, Merlin.” He muttered, this time loud enough for her to hear. “I do have abs!” He protested, not caring if he sounded like an idiot. He was proud of his body. He removed his dress robes, tossing them carelessly on the ground and pulled his dress shirt out of his pants, showing her his stomach. His mother was probably going to yell at him for getting his clothes wrinkled but he didn’t care. Of course Madison would be the one person who didn’t appreciate his body. Spencer smirked as Madison stuttered over her “not you” and turned red. He couldn’t resist the urge to move closer to her, cupping her chin in oddly gentle hands and lifting her face up to look at him. “Not me, huh?” He murmured softly, a mischievous glint in his blue eyes. “So you wouldn’t mind that I’m this close to you?” He definitely minded being this close to her. He should be disgusted, Madison wasn’t his type. But his heart hammered anyways. “You wouldn’t like if I kissed you then?” He leaned forward, his lips inches from hers, flashing back to her birthday party. He was tempted to back away now, tell her if was all a cruel joke. He definitely didn’t want to kiss Madison. But it would be so easy to lean an inch forward and kiss her. “Do you want me to kiss you, Madison?” His thumb brushed over her bottom lip, as his eyes met hers again. Why was he even asking? Maybe he had drank too much punch. That had to be the reason he was standing this close to Madison McCarthy and debating kissing her.
Madison could see that he was avoiding her gaze, and for some reason that irritated her. She didn’t know why he wasn’t looking at her. The licking of his lips made her wonder if he was keeping anything from her. If, perhaps, he was lying. Would he really lie to her? The way his eyes kept darting around, almost as if he could barely stand the sight of her, confirmed her thoughts. Dang. “Oh come on, Spencer,” She groaned, rolling her eyes across at him. Why was he so stuck on the stereotypical vision of Ravenclaws? “That’s not our biggest focus, you know.” He repeated that he wasn’t terrified once again, which she didn’t believe for one second. Why should she believe him when he was acting so strange towards her? The force in his voice and his face expression proved otherwise. Madison wasn’t an idiot. Swearing wasn’t something Madison liked doing. It was rude, and impolite, and her parents– when they were around, anyway– had always told her that swearing was only to be done when it was necessary. This wasn’t necessary. “Then why did you randomly swear, then? It’s a little odd.” The excuse that Spencer gave her was absolutely awful. Had she not taught him anything during their brief friendship? Imagination was vital, and he didn’t seem to have any, with the excuse he just gave her. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, or to smirk. That’d only annoy him further. She decided to drop the subject about her future plans; after all, she’d only ever spoken to Mason about this. Never anyone else. It wasn’t like Spencer even cared. Or she supposed he didn’t. His irritation, however, about her skeptically looking at him, made her chuckle and grin at him. “Oh, you do?” She teased, her grin widening. That was until he removed his dress robes and her eyes widened. Was he really doing this? Really?! Madison was convinced Spencer had gone absolutely mad. She was only teasing, of course. “Okay, okay, I get it.” She answered, rolling her eyes. Spencer’s smirk, however, removed her grin, and she felt her face heating up again. Nerves swelled up and she found herself breathing heavily, in short and sharp gasps. Dang, she was going to feint if he kept this up. When Spencer cupped her chin, Madison bit down on her lower lip, trying to avoid his eye contact. She was looking anywhere else but at him, however difficult it was. He was so close to her that she felt intoxicated by him, dizziness overwhelming her. Oh Merlin. Oh Merlin. She needed to get away from Spencer before she did something she would be regretting. Her mind flashed back to her birthday party, the music hammering into her ears as she remembered what had happened. Yet when her eyes met his– Well, fuck, she didn’t know what else to think. “N-No…” She didn’t help it. She couldn’t help but lie when the truth terrified her.
Spencer couldn’t help but meet Madison’s eyes in surprise at the sound of her voice. He rarely ever heard her get annoyed at him so it always surprised him when she did. It seemed like they either got along or at each other’s throats. Simple annoyance, it was new, and not exactly the worst thing. “C'mon? C'mon what? Way to be vague, McCarthy.” He scoffed, looking down at the ground as he did so. His foot wore a path idly in the dirt, still not meeting her eyes. He couldn’t explain why he was looking away. It wasn’t like there was anything about Madison to be nervous about. But part of him couldn’t help but wonder if she’d know exactly what he was thinking if he looked her in the eyes. Madison was way too good with people. “Grades and being number one is totally the biggest focus of Ravenclaws. Don’t you guys go on all the time but how amazing and smart you are? How much you’ve contributed to the wizarding world, yada yada yada.” He didn’t really pay attention when most of the Ravenclaws started talking about how great they were. Most of the time Madison didn’t do that, even if she could be self congratulatory at times, but he had always considered the Ravenclaws to be as stuck up about how smart they were, just like everyone assumed Gryffindors were stuck on being brave, Hufflepuffs were stuck on loving everyone and Slytherins were stuck on having sticks up their asses. It was just how the houses worked and no matter how much denying Madison did, it wouldn’t change his opinion. He knew immediately that Madison didn’t believe him and that annoyed him. He knew he wasn’t the best liar, but he didn’t think he was that bad. Apparently Madison didn’t agree. “What?” He demanded, a scowl firmly placed on his face and his arms crossed. He knew he was being defensive again but he didn’t like feeling laughed at and he felt like Madison was definitely about to start laughing. Spencer knew he had the upper hand when her eyes widened and the grin was wiped from her face. He was not up for her disbelieving him about his abs. “Does this mean you don’t want to see me shirtless?” He teased, his smirk growing wider. He definitely didn’t mind making Madison uncomfortable. He put his shirt down though, not exactly ready to strip naked so late on castle grounds. That would definitely look pretty sketchy and he didn’t need Mason thinking he was seducing his sister or something. He couldn’t help but be confused about Madison’s reaction. It was obvious that being this close to him was doing something, that was the only explanation for her erratic breathing. But she said she didn’t like him. He didn’t know what the truth was. He noticed that she wouldn’t look him in eyes, and he knew something was definitely off. “No?” He asked quietly, pausing for a second to take a deep breath. “You don’t want me to kiss you? Are you sure.” Part of him wanted to kiss her anyways but even if he was an asshole, he didn’t want to kiss her without her permission.
Madison knew the moment that their eyes met that he was lying to her. He was actually lying to her! How rude! It was fairly tempting to just, well, call him out on it, but she didn’t want to. There was obviously a reason for it, and perhaps one day he’d tell her– Well, she knew one day he probably wouldn’t, actually, but a girl could wish, couldn’t she? He was obviously annoyed at her though, again, and she wasn’t surprised. She’d questioned something that no one would have usually questioned, it made perfect sense. “You don’t have to be this tough Gryffindor to me, you know? I’m not an idiot.” She answered matter-of-factually, not bothering to try and get him to look at her again. What was the point? Instead, she looked out ahead of her, taking in Hogwarts– well, as much as she could see, anyway. Letting out a small chuckle, Madison shrugged, not really knowing how to reply to him. Sure, some Ravenclaws were like her described. But that didn’t mean she was. Or she hoped she wasn’t. Friendships and family and love were all major things to her too, not only education and amazingness- even if she was quite amazing. The way he crossed him arms and scowled made her grin again. It amused her how sulky he got. She wasn’t sure why, it just did. “You’re an awful liar.” She stated with a small shrug, his defensive nature not really scaring or putting her off like it used to have done. She was on the verge of laughing, and Madison bit down on her lip to stop herself. It was annoying that Spencer had the upper hand now, though, yet she didn’t mind all that much. After all, she’d just had conformation that Spencer Porter had abs– why would she be complaining??? With flushed cheeks, she chuckled and answered, “Save that for another time when I’m not totally freezing my butt off.” She was going to add that anyone could see them, and they’d probably assume the worst. News flew around the castle rapidly, and she didn’t want anymore rumors about Spencer about her. That’d be awful. His question made her swallow a lump in the back of her throat nervously. Her resistance and self control was slowly wearing away and all too soon she found herself whispering back, “What if I do?” The question gave it away, and she knew that. Yet she didn’t care anymore.
Spencer couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when Madison didn’t call him on his lying. He didn’t really want to deal with that bullshit right now and not having to have a heart to heart discussion while standing on Hogwarts grounds at night was definitely appreciated. It was good to know that even Madison was capable of having common sense. It was a shock, that was to be sure. Madison wouldn’t be the first person he could imagine venting to and he wasn’t exactly sure he wanted that changing any time soon. They weren’t exactly friends after all. “You say that like the 'tough Gryffindor’ thing is an act.” Spencer wasn’t sure if she thought it was an act or not. It wasn’t an act. He was tough. He had been sorted into Gryffindor for a reason. He wasn’t as multitalented as some people. He didn’t have the boring dramatic background half the people in Frog Choir seemed to have. He was an athlete though and he was tough. It was who he was. “Maybe there’s not more for you to see.” He knew he was being stubborn but he didn’t like the idea that Madison was trying to pick him apart. It was irritating. Why couldn’t she just accept that he was who he was and that he wasn’t some happy go lucky person like she was. “No argument?” He asked when she didn’t reply to his Ravenclaw accusation. He expected an argument, part of him had even hoped for one. He didn’t really expect Madison to just shrug. It was disappointing. He wanted at least some sort of reaction. “I’m not that bad of a liar.” He argued, not really wanting to be wrong. Spencer didn’t like losing at things, even if it was something dubious like lying. “Are you saying you’re a good liar?” He couldn’t really imagine Madison lying about something. She was too much of a girl scout. Part of him didn’t like the change between them. She seemed much less nervous around him. The idea that Madison was getting comfortable with him terrified him. “Are you saying you want me to be shirtless around you again?” He raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised. He didn’t think Madison would want to see him shirtless. He wasn’t sure if he was pleased or displeased by that idea. His heart almost stopped when she asked “What if I do?” He couldn’t be Madison’s crush. That was insane. Maybe she just liked kissing anyone. She had kissed Blaine, after all. That made a lot more sense. “Then I guess I’ll do this.” Before he could stop himself, he leaned down, his lips meeting hers quickly. Kissing Madison was like nothing he had ever expected. It was like his heart was slowing and speeding up at the same time. He couldn’t focus on anything but kissing her for as long as possible, his lips moving against hers. He expected her to push him away or slap him. He expected it at any moment.
Madison noticed his sigh of relief and realised by not questioning him, she’d done the right thing. At least she hoped she had. She at least knew that some sort of a heart to heart wasn’t welcome, and she accepted that. It wasn’t like she wanted to be having a serious conversation right now anyway. While Madison knew that she wouldn’t, and would probably never be the person Spencer would go to with his troubles– she’d like to think that she at least offered. Madison had no idea how many close friends Spencer had and how many of them he actually trusted. A small shrug was her answer to his statement about Gryffindor’s and Spencer’s toughness was an act. She wasn’t sure if she thought it was. “I don’t know, is it?” She questioned, looking across at him and raising an eyebrow. She believed just how tough he was, of course. She’d seen his toughness and bravery before, many times. His Quidditch was on point and she’d seen during their tutoring just how smart he was when he actually tried. His question, or statement, caused her eyebrows to raise again. Was there not more for her to see? Was he really just a pure bully with no other intentions than to pick on people? Of course not. She’d seen on multiple occasions how cool he could be when he actually allowed himself to be. “No argument.” She shook her head, “That doesn’t mean I agree with you, it just means I don’t have the energy to do anything but.” Which was true, she didn’t. She was drained, emotionally and physically and didn’t have the strength to argue. It was a losing game. Maybe Madison saw what others didn’t, and that was why she knew when he was lying. Maybe. She noticed how his eyes batted around nervously, unsure as to what to look at. And she noticed how stiff he became, avoiding any form of eye contact. “Perhaps not. But I know that you’re lying.” Madison knew from the minute Spencer questioned her that he didn’t like losing. It was evident. This was all a game to him– and Madison was clearly winning, which was why he pulled his tantrums, as she called them. “Not at all. I’m awful at lying. Not that I do lie, I find it awful.” That was the truth, for sure. She always felt too awkward to tell anything other than the truth, ever since she was a little girl. There was a definite change between Madison and Spencer; that was evident. She’d gone from fearing him, to most of the time enjoying his company. His view on life amused her and she did believe that behind the exterior he was a really good person. The less naive side of her brain warned her that she was being too innocent, too trusting, but she didn’t care. “I don’t know. Am I?” Madison knew he was surprised by her revelation, almost as if he hadn’t expected it. His view of her as a 'girl scout’ was obviously fading by the minute, and Madison was glad they were finally getting somewhere. Silence hit them both after her question and she could see he was thinking. Her heart slammed violently against her chest as the overwhelming emptiness of words lingered between them. Dang, had she done the wrong thing? That was until he spoke, finally, and before she had a chance to speak, to question or to complain– his lips were on hers and damn, almost immediately she found herself kissing him back. She’d kissed someone before, of course. But this was different, somehow. This wasn’t some stupid kiss with Blaine or Ryder that meant nothing. Butterflies swarmed her stomach as she stopped thinking about everything else flooding her mind. Everything else seemed irrelevant.
Spencer paused for a moment, not sure if he knew exactly how to answer Madison. Did she want him to say it was an act? It wasn’t an act, so he wasn’t exactly sure what he was supposed to say. Well, at least he was positive it wasn’t an act. He might not be brave all the time - or well, about certain things, but that didn’t mean it was an act. No one was brave all the time, he reasoned. It took him a moment to realize that he was having an argument with himself and not answering Madison. “No, it isn’t.” Spencer finally answered, shaking his head. She didn’t need to know that sometimes he doubted his confidence. He didn’t know how Madison would take that. For all he knew, she would look at him differently and he didn’t know how he’d feel about that. The idea of Madison looking at him differently bugged him and it made no sense why. He shouldn’t care what she thought of him. He was sure she didn’t care what he thought of her. He met her raised eyebrows with a blank stare, not sure what to say. Maybe he wasn’t good at this vulnerable stuff but the idea of Madison seeing the vulnerable parts of himself, it was just freaky. “I thought you’d love to prove yourself right.” He really thought she’d have some sort of 10 minute argument on why he was stereotyping Ravenclaws. “But yeah, whatever, it doesn’t matter.” He didn’t really care if she argued or not. He looked back at the castle, wondering idly if they’d lock the doors and they’d be stuck here until morning. “Think what you want.” He finally answered gruffly, not really wanting to banter with her anymore on whether or not he was lying. He was sure that it’d just give her more reason to believe he was lying to her. “Of course you are.” He muttered under his breath, not surprised at either statement. She was a girl scout after all. It’d be totally her thing to hate lying of any type. Spencer shot her an amused smirk, impressed by how forward Madison was being despite himself. “I mean, I’m always willing to show any part you want to see off.” He patted his arm, flexing his muscle as he did so. He knew it was somewhat cheesy, but he was proud of his body, damn it. He couldn’t help but he surprised when Madison kissed him back. This had to be a dream, though a surprisingly good one. He pulled her closer to him, his hands moving from her chin to her waist as he continued to kiss her. He was pretty certain he never wanted to stop kissing Madison and that thought terrified him. Finally he pulled away slightly, biting gently on her bottom lip as he did so. He knew his breathing was labored but he didn’t really care at the moment what she thought.
Madison watched as the oh-so-great silence settled between them both. Great, she thought to herself. She could tell he was thinking, she knew that much. What was he thinking about? And why on earth did she care? Instead of just staring at him as she waited for a reply, Madison turned her head away from his and turned to watch the lake. Something about how peaceful it was reminded her that regardless of what happened between Spencer and herself, nothing would change. The lake would still make gentle soothing noises and Piers would still make snarky posts on Tumblr. The world would move on in its own twisted way and leave Madison and Spencer to deal with the aftermath. Madison grinned as he flexed his muscles, “I’ll totally bear that in mind.” She answered, looking back over at Spencer, before drifting back into her thoughts again. She knew he was talking, the muse of his voice was vaguely heard as thoughts flooded through her mind. The thought of Spencer actually agreeing to show her any 'part’ nerved Madison– what did that even mean? It felt almost as if the entirety of Madison’s body was on fire, almost like a million different fireworks shooting off into the sky, all of which going in different directions. She was too engaged in the kiss that anything else that should have been running through her mind, didn’t. Her mind was blank yet full of racing thoughts all at once while her heart was steadily crashing against her chest. Merlin. Was this even healthy? Did everyone experience this? It was Wild and crazy and intoxicating and insanely amazing mixed into one and Madison couldn’t help but feel dizzy. She took his hands moving to her waist as an invitation to interlock one hand in his hair, running through it. She didn’t even care if she was a little rough. Damn. What was happening to her? When he finally pulled away, Madison stared blankly, trying to think clearly. A moment passed, settled for much longer than a moment should do, and then passed again. And my God was Madison scared. “I-” she choked out, finding herself stuttering over her words. “I should go…” She muttered.
Spencer didn’t say anything, allowing the silence to drift over them. He had a feeling that Madison was trying to figure out what he was thinking and he didn’t really care. She could try to dissect him all she wanted, that wouldn’t mean she’d succeed at doing so. Even if sometimes she was scarily good at doing it. It seemed like forever until they spoke again, to the point where he wondered if they would say anything at all before they entered the castle and went their separate ways. “Good.” He said simply with a nod, wondering if he wanted her to actually bear that in mind or if he meant it as a joke. It was probably a bit of both if he cared to actually admitted it. Spencer was pretty sure he wanted to kiss Madison again and again until she forgot her name and the only one she remembered was his. He couldn’t help the groan that escaped his mouth as her hands tangled roughly in his hair. Madison was a lot rougher than he expected her to be but he was pretty sure he liked it a lot. He stared at her as she stared at him waiting for her reaction. For all he knew, she thought that was a terrible kiss. He could just look down into her green eyes as she managed to choke out words. He ignored the sinking feeling in his chest as she said she had to go. “Yeah, it’s late.” He finally managed to get out, stepping back from her, his hands unclasping from her waist. He was torn between wanting to kiss her again and never wanting to kiss her ever again. It was an incredibly confusing feeling. “Do you want me to walk you back?” He wanted to be as far away from her as possible. If he forgot he kissed Madison McCarthy, he would have no problem with it. The kiss was amazing and the biggest mistake he had ever made. He didn’t know why he had been so dumb to kiss Madison. He didn’t know why she was so dumb to kiss back.

Shut up and Dance → MADENCER
TAGGING: Spencer Porter and Madison McCarthy
TIMELINE: Monday, May 11th, 2023
SETTING: Hogwarts Castle.
SUMMARY: Spencer and Madison meet up so Madison can teacher Spencer the basics of dancing.
Madison wasn’t really sure how on earth both her and Spencer had ended up deciding to meet again. Sure, that was her own fault for even suggesting to meet with him again. It wasn’t like she wanted to have Spencer struggling at the dance, and Madison loved dancing anyway. This was going to be fun. Madison had decided beforehand that meeting in an empty classroom would definitely be easier for this dance class– whatever they were calling it. She placed her bag down on the ground beside the door and shivered slightly, glancing around. Madison would have to move around some of the chairs if they wanted to actually have room to do any dancing. Quickly, Madison got to work, moving the furniture to one side of the room so that there was some space while she waited for Spencer to turn up.
Spencer wasn’t sure how he had managed to get roped into spending more time with Madison. He didn’t even like her but she was tutoring him and then somehow he had been talked into going to the stupid Frog Choir thing with her and now, she was going to teach him how to dance. He even kind of liked spending time with Madison. He was sure he had hit his head. He debated on skipping and nipping… whatever this was in the bud, but he couldn’t. Spencer eventually made his way to the classroom they had agreed with, walking slowly. He eventually made it to the room, opening the door and peering inside. Madison was already there, moving furniture to one side of the room. “You could have waited for me, you know.” Spencer finally said, walking in and closing the door. “I would have helped you, I guess.” He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, hoping to give the appearance of not caring.
Madison wasn’t really sure what time they had actually agreed on, but she knew that he was at least a little bit late. Not that it mattered, obviously, it meant Madison could quickly sort out the classroom without any distractions. When Spencer finally arrived, Madison lifted her head and grinned across at him. “Hi to you too,” She responded as she moved from one side of the classroom to the other. “Oh, that’s okay, I didn’t mind.” It wasn’t like she was unable to move a few chairs and tables, anyway. She wasn’t completely helpless. “How are you, anyway?”
Madison – Madison asked curiously, stopping what she was doing to actually look at him properly. He didn’t really look at all excited to be having to do dance lessons, but that was understandable. Hopefully he was better than what he gave himself credit for, but if he was as awful as he made out to be, Madison would try her hardest to make some improvements.
Spencer stuffed his hands in his pockets, looking around at the room. It seemed decent for dancing and hopefully no one would find them. He would have asked if he kept her waiting long, but she would have known he walked slow on purpose, part of him hoping she’d get tired of waiting and leave. “Yeah, hi.” Spencer said, giving her a half-hearted wave, walking over to a desk and sitting down on it. He turned to look at her, shooting her a smirk? “Wanted to break sweat?” He asked almost playfully, giving her a once over. Madison didn’t look too tired, but part of him couldn’t deny that she looked attractive even when she had been sweating a bit. He idly wondered if she could look unattractive. It would be better for him if she could. “I’m fine. Ready to get this over with.” He kept his reply brisk, standing up and walking over to her. “What are we supposed to do now?” He didn’t get why people enjoyed dance. It seemed boring and it made him do things he wasn’t keen on, like spending more time with Madison McCarthy.
Madison had chosen the classroom because it wasn’t one that many students would randomly barge into, which Madison assumed Spencer would have wanted. It’s not like they both needed this whole ‘dance lesson’ thing getting out, either way. When she finally stacked the last chair on the other side of the room, she turned to face him, raising an eyebrow at his comment. She hoped she wasn’t actually sweating all that much– that would been embarrassing. Dam
Madison – Dang, was she really? “I guess?” She answered hurriedly, not really sure how to reply to him. His tone sounded playful, thank goodness. Or at least, she hoped it was playful, Madison was never really sure with Spencer. He noticed him looking at her and felt her cheeks turning a shade of pink again– Jeez, what was up with her today. His reply was short, and it was evident he wasn’t looking forward to it. Looking up at him, Madison chuckled slightly at his question. “Okay, well first things first, you’re actually going to have to hold my hand, scarily enough.” She teased, her tone light, guessing that Spencer probably would object. Either way, she took his hands into her own, not bothering to wait for his reply. “Dancing is fun, Spencer, try and at least enjoy this.” Madison reminded him with a half smile at him.
Spencer couldn’t help but think that the way she raised her eyebrow at him and gave him that look, was oddly attractive. He pursed his lips together, cursing his brain for once again focusing on how hot Madison was. It really needed to stop that shit, he was getting tired of it. He couldn’t help but smile when she replied hurriedly, obviously discomfited with his comments. He liked knocking Madison off her footing. He liked it even more when she blushed. Soon enough, he was the one feeling uncomfortable when she mentioned that he would have to hold her hand. He looked around, hoping that something would get him out of it. Spencer knew he wasn’t that lucky. She reached forward and took his hands in hers and Spencer tried to not make a face at the contact. Touching Madison - touching Madison’s hands, wasn’t so bad. “Yeah, you say so.” He retorted, nodding a second later. “Yeah, I’ll try.” That was nicer than he usually was to her. He had a feeling she probably wouldn’t be appreciative of even that small concession.
Madison watched him purse his lips together tightly and frowned, slightly concerned. They had only just started, had she already done something to annoy him? Madison had noticed things like that with many boys, though. They had strange mood changes that sent Madison off-guard. Either way, minutes later and he was smiling– weirdly enough, so her frown was scattered. Perhaps that was because her cheeks had gone bright red, though. She wasn’t sure. Surprisingly enough, he didn’t look that annoyed by her taking his hands, which was comforting, at least. “You’re totally going to have to loosen up if you actually want to be able to dance, you know that right?” Shooting him another grin, Madison looked up at him again, trying to catch his eyes. This wasn’t going to work if it was awkward between them. “I guess dancing requires the two people to actually, you know, at least respect each other. They have to be connected, otherwise it doesn’t work.” Madison wasn’t going to mention that Mason was her only dance partner before this, and it had been so much more easier.
Spencer wondered how close to Madison this dance lesson was going to force him to be. He reminded himself that he had agreed to go with her to the ball. If he couldn’t stand to be near her when no one was looking, then dancing with her in front of the entire school would be a pain in the arse. He would just have to toughen up and deal with it. There were worse people he could be going to the dance with. It wasn’t like Dolohov had asked him. Then he might have actually jumped off his broomstick. “I am loose.” Spencer shot back, trying to relax. They were just dancing. It wasn’t like he liked her. And if he did like her, it was only as kind of sorta friends. It wasn’t like he was going to start making out with her. His blue eyes met her green ones, a chill going through his body at the dumb smile she gave him. It really was stupid, he didn’t care if Roderick thought he liked it. He thought it was dumb. “I don’t hate you too much.” Spencer told her, frowning at her. He didn’t hate her at all but she didn’t need to know that. He didn’t know why he didn’t want her to know that but he just didn’t. “Do I put my arm somewhere do I just hold your hands?” He didn’t like being so unsure about something but at least no one was around to hear him.
Madison knew that this wasn’t going to be easy. Hell, she was glad they were getting this out of the way now rather than at the dance in front of everyone. That would have been humiliating. She had decided to just teach them at least the basics, except it seemed to be taking forever to even start . When Spencer shot back that he was loose, Madison stopped herself from rolling her eyes. He didn’t look loose; he looked uncomfortable, which made Madison feel awful. It was when their eyes met that Madison started to feel a little uncomfortable, hoping that Spencer hadn’t noticed how she caught her breath and shifted her eyes from his, breaking the eye contact. Dang, he had this weird affect on her that made her squirmy and anxious. She would have to talk to Mason about this and see what he thought, he’d be able to help. A dry chuckle left her lips when Spencer told her he didn’t hate her too much, “Thanks?” Madison was never really sarcastic, but by this point she’d hoped they’d at least be dancing; not awkwardly standing around doing nothing. She was a perfectionist. Rolling her eyes, Madison shrugged and guided his hand to her waist and placed it there. “That’s where you place this one.” She explained, “And you just hold my left hand here.” It wasn’t all that complicated, really, but she probably wasn’t explaining it very well. She just felt flustered, if anything.
Spencer didn’t know if it would be this awkward trying to dance with someone else. The only person he could imagine it would be more painful doing it with was probably Kitty. That was mostly because he had no doubt she would step on his feet and boss him around the entire time. So, Madison wasn’t exactly the worst pick, even if he wasn’t sure half the time if she liked him or hated him. But then, he wasn’t sure if he liked her or hated her. He was happy when she looked away from him, knowing if she kept looking at him with those green eyes of hers, he would do something he regretted. He didn’t need to actually kiss Madison McCarthy. It was bad enough that he had gotten close to doing it. “You’re welcome.” Spencer replied, rolling his eyes. Madison’s tone made it obvious she didn’t exactly think it was an honor that he didn’t hate her. “Are we going to dance?” He finally asked, not exactly enjoying just standing there, holding her hand in his. He tried to not flinch when she moved his hand to her waist, ignoring how close she felt. “Alright, so we just stand like this?” Spencer asked, wanting to concentrate on anything but Madison. “I’m guessing we actually move and we’re not going to stand here gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes.” He didn’t keep the sarcasm out of his voice. He didn’t care if Madison took offense right now. He didn’t know if he wanted to pull her tighter to him or push her away. Probably a combination of both.
Madison wasn’t really sure how it had gotten to this stage, but this was totally awkward, and she assumed Spencer felt the exact same. The temptation to just back out now and suggest they found other dates was in thie back of her mind as she bit down on her lower lip, unsure of what to say or do. She could easily find another date, right? Spencer would obviously find a date easy enough, perhaps that would be better than this. She wasn’t sure if this was because she was stressed, or because of how close Spencer was to her, but she was releasing shaky breaths and she felt completely frozen to the spot. Why on earth did she even feel like that? “Yes, of course we’re going to dance.” She reassured him, nodding, though right now she wasn’t even sure where to start. Think, Madison, concentrate, she reminded herself, as her eyes darted around the room. “Yep, this is how we stand if it’s like– I don’t know, a ballad or something-” Madison knew she was rambling, something she did when she was nervous, but she couldn’t help it. “- Usually ballads are a whole lot easier, because all you have to do is sway.” His sarcasm was evident and Madison wasn’t sure if she was irritated or amused by this point. The conflicting emotions overclouding her normal judgement weren’t helping at all. “Right, s-so, with this leg–” She pointed down to his left leg, trying to keep voice from shaking as she tried to explain, “–You just take a small step backwards with it, while I move my right leg forward at the same time. Then we step back into the original position. Does that make sense?” She asked, raising an eyebrow across at him.
Spencer debated telling her he couldn’t go the ball with her and just going stag. It would be easier on them both. But a part of him, a bigger part than he wanted to admit wanted to go to the ball. He didn’t get it considering he was pretty sure he still didn’t like Mason that much, but he liked Madison a lot more than he had ever expected to like her. Madison was the last person he expected to feel anything for and somehow he didn’t dislike her as much as he pretended to. Spencer looked down, frowning slightly as he realized her breathing seemed a bit shaky. He didn’t know what was wrong with her or if he had done something but he vowed to try to be at least a little nicer. “Good.” His reply was short, but void of sarcasm. He could at least manage that much. He nodded when she started talking about ballads, not exactly sure what he’d do if they ever had a fast song. Maybe he could just stand to the side and just not dance if that ever happened. “I’m probably just going to sit fast songs out.” He commented, watching her carefully. He didn’t think she’d freak out if he just danced with her for slow songs. He never exactly imagined he would ever slow dance with Madison but he had told her he would go and he wouldn’t break his word. Not even to someone who confused him more than anything. Spencer followed her instructions, moving his left leg back as she moved forward. It was easy enough. He could do it, even if he was a bit clumsy at it. He glanced down at her, shooting her a rare, small smile. “I wasn’t too terrible at that, was I?” He had time to be terrible, that was just one small move of what they’d have to do after all.
Madison was trying to calm herself down as he spoke, completely confused by this stage. Did she actually, well, like Spencer like that? The thought was slightly scary to Madison, especially considering how honest Spencer was about his hatred of her, even if it apparently wasn’t that big anymore. She’d have to think about it though, because right now, her mind was too clogged up with his hand on her waist and jumbled up thoughts about ballads. Dang, his frown informed Madison that he knew how shaky her breath was, and she stopped herself from making up some excuse to explain it. It didn’t matter. Giving a small grin when Spencer mentioned sitting out the faster songs, Madison nodded, slightly relieved. Perhaps that would be better, anyway. “Sure, that sounds good. We could dance to the slightly slower ones, and then whenever something fast comes on, we’ll make a beeline to the drinks or something.” It wasn’t like Madison liked faster songs anyway, they were difficult to dance to in comparison to the slower dances. Watching Spencer try out the instructions she gave, Madison nodded, impressed. “That’s good!” His smile caught her off guard, but she smiled back at him. “You weren’t, actually. You should give yourself more credit.” Sure, it wasn’t all that difficult and she was certain she and Mason had learned it in one of their first dancing lessons, but she had been expecting worse. “Okay, so that’s kind of like the basic move that we’d do. I mean, the majority of the time it’ll be just swaying along to the music. Obviously you’d follow my lead on that one.”
Spencer wasn’t really sure if Madison liked him or not. She had said she found him awesome, but for all he knew, she might just be saying that. She was always positive but Madison didn’t seem like the type of person to be around people she didn’t like or didn’t want to put up with. He couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel to date her. It’d be totally bizarre. They wouldn’t be a good couple at all. Nope, not at all. Spencer was shaken out of his thinking when she grinned at him, resisting the urge to bite his lip at the sight. “I mean, you can dance with someone else when I sit the fast dances out.” He wasn’t sure if his voice didn’t hitch. He didn’t really like the thought of Madison dancing with someone else but she wasn’t his girlfriend and it wasn’t like he had claim over her. Spencer wouldn’t have thought he wanted to spend the whole night with her but part of him did. Part of him knew he would enjoy Madison’s company if he just gave in and let himself enjoy it. “Are you sure? I’m sure I suck.” He asked, raising an eyebrow. He knew he was a terrible dancer. “I won’t be the worst dancer at least.” He didn’t know why Madison was being so nice to him. Part of him didn’t want her to be and part of him really liked it. “Is that the only move we do or is there others?” He sounded curious, he knew that, but he actually really liked dancing with Madison. The dance probably wouldn’t be so bad. Granted, he definitely would not tell her that. Ever.
Madison couldn’t really get the thought of her head now and it kept distracting her from whatever Spencer was seemingly telling her. The thought plagued her mind and as much as she tried to distract herself, she couldn’t. This was like mission-freakin’-impossible. Dang. The mention of dancing with someone else caused an eyebrow raise, however, as she considered the option. It sounded almost like a good idea. Almost. “Sure! That sounds good!” Of course, she was actually looking forward to dancing with Spencer. It was going to be fun. He wasn’t awful at dancing either. That was until she heard his voice hitch and she frowned lightly, her eyes finding his again as she stared at him again, trying to figure out what he was thinking. “You don’t suck at all, stupid. Negatively thinking isn’t going to help either of us, you know that right?” She nodded at him, though, her grin remaining. “You’ll be great. Try not to worry.”
Spencer knew that Madison was acting a bit weird, but he wasn’t exactly sure why. After all, Madison always acted at least slightly weird in his opinion. And she might think he was abducted by aliens if he suddenly acted all concerned about her. Merlin, he would probably think he was abducted by aliens if he suddenly acted all concerned about her. “I mean, if you want to. I guess I wouldn’t mind if you hung around me the entire time.” He didn’t know why he said it. He meant it, maybe, but that didn’t mean he had to tell her he actually liked hanging around her, even if he did. He had a feeling he wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he saw her flirting with Ryder or something. He knew she heard his voice hitch and he tried to mask the look on his face so she wouldn’t be able to tell what he was thinking. That was the last thing he wanted. Spencer just shrugged when she said he didn’t suck. “If you say so. I’m not always positive like you.” He pointed out, but his voice wasn’t as harsh at it usually was around her. “Yeah, well my teacher isn’t that bad.” Spencer told her impulsively, freezing when he realized what he had said. Fuck. He had basically complimented her. What if she thought he fancied her or something?
Madison couldn’t help but look shocked when Spencer said that he wouldn’t mind hanging out with her. Something about his tone surprised Madison, about how he wasn’t being sarcastic this time. The frown that had already been there quickly disappeared and was replaced with a small smile. “I wouldn’t mind if I did that either,” Spencer wasn’t an idiot. Madison knew that very well– hell, she knew how clever he was. He’d probably figure out that she may-or-may-not-have-a-teeny-crush on him. She wasn’t very subtle, she knew that much. “Although I totally promised Henry and Ryder a dance too– but otherwise I’m totally all yours–” Crap, that came out wrong. Her face reddened again and she looked away. He was difficult to read in the sense that his expression was just blank, lost of emotion. “I’m positive, but I’m also honest.” She shrugged. Her grin returned when he kind of complimented her, “Isn’t that bad, huh?” She repeated teasingly.
Spencer could tell that Madison was surprised and he resisted the urge to say that he was joking. Part of him didn’t want to see her hurt. It was a stupid thought, but he couldn’t help it. Why did she have to make his heart race so much? He didn’t have a thing for Madison McCarthy. That was ridiculous. No. “Yeah, well, that’s good, I guess.” Spencer replied, knowing he sounded awkward and hating it. He liked being confident and he definitely knew he wasn’t coming off as confident and in charge. She managed to break his barriers one plate of armor at the time. He made a low noise in his throat at the mention of Ryder and Henry, hoping she wouldn’t hear. His displeasure was wiped away a moment later when she said she was totally his. “Totally mine, hm?” He asked, not able to keep a smirk from his face as she blushed. “What are you all mine for, Madison?” He knew it was a rare time he used her first name but he didn’t care. “Alright, alright. I won’t give you a hard time about it.” He promised, shrugging his shoulders. He didn’t really have the energy to give her shit about it. “Wellll, I’ve had worse teachers.” He finally told her, hoping she didn’t take it to mean more than he didn’t exactly mind her. She wouldn’t take it as he liked her. She couldn’t.
Madison was trying desperately to make this whole thing less awkward. Well, trying. She wasn’t really succeeding. She wasn’t even sure why it was awkward. Maybe he knew she had a crush on him or something? That’d be awful. More than awful. He’d probably mock her for absolutely ages. And probably never speak to her again. That couldn’t happen. “Totally.” The noise in his throat that he then made caught her off guard and she frowned, letting go of his hand and taking a step away in surprise. “Are you okay?” She asked, concerned. Madison found herself grinning when he teased her about her wording. “That totally wasn’t what I meant!” She wasn’t sure why exactly but laughter built up and she started to chuckle at the thought. “Thank you.” At least he wasn’t asking her anything or teasing her. That’d be even more awful. “Oh you have, hmm? Well I do try my best to get you the best grades.” Madison loved teaching, she surprised herself by really enjoying it.
Spencer didn’t think he had ever been in a weirder situation. Especially not with Madison. He wasn’t sure if they were flirting or not. He wasn’t sure about anything they were doing. Part of him wanted to jump into the lake and forget any of this had ever happened. If Madison had ever found out he might find her cute, if anyone found out he might find her cute, he’d never live it down. He knew that much. Spencer froze when she took a step away and looked at him in concern. He didn’t mean for her to hear that. “I’m fine. Just something in my throat.” He knew it was a terrible excuse but he didn’t know what else to say. Hopefully she would buy it. “Aww, it wasn’t? I’m kinda disappointed.” He countered, laughing lightly as he looked at her face. Her laughing just made him laugh harder. He definitely didn’t ever expect to be laughing with Madison. “You’re welcome.” He said after a pause. “Yeah, yeah. Shut it, McCarthy. We don’t want your head getting too big.” He wondered if he’d quit having her be his tutor even if his grades got good. He hoped not.
Madison could see that the tension spiralling between them was decreasing gradually with time, which was somewhat a good thing– because who really liked tension? And regardless of what Spencer said, they were friends in Madison’s mind and she had a whole lot of fun hanging out with him. They had this weirdly fun flirty thing and Madison was cool with that. “I have some water in my bag if you need some?” She offered slowly, not really sure what else to say. It wasn’t the best excuse Spencer had used but Madison couldn’t find the energy to call him out on it. “Why are you kinda disappointed? It’s not like we’re dating or anything.” Her tone was light and jokey, letting him know she was only kidding around, as she laughed alongside him. Her jaw dropped slightly when he said about her head getting any bigger and she rolled her eyes, lightly slapping him on his arm. “Hey! My ego is at a perfectly normal size, thank you very much.” Madison laughed.
Spencer could tell the same thing that had happened at her party was happening again. They were becoming more and more comfortable with each other and he didn’t know how to feel about it. On one hand, it was nice to not be at Madison’s throat all the time and on the other hand, this weird, somewhat flirty relationship confused him way too much. He just couldn’t really decide how he felt about Madison and that annoyed him more than he would admit. Why were girls so confusing? “No, no, I’m fine.” Spencer replied, shaking his head. He knew she didn’t fall for his excuse but luckily she didn’t ask him what was really up. That was a relief, at least. “Doesn’t matter.” He told her somewhat brusquely, ignoring her comment about them not dating. He didn’t want to date Madison. Not at all. Part of him debated telling Madison that he would never date her, but Spencer couldn’t bring himself to say it. He knew he was probably digging himself a bigger grace, after all she was obviously joking about the dating. “You hit like a wuss, McCarthy.” He told her with a smile, raising his eyebrows at her a second later. “Your ego is huge. You’re a Ravenclaw.” Ravenclaws did think they were amazing at everything.
Madison was just happy that finally they had became a little more comfortable around each other again, rather than the weird awkward stages. Or the insulting ones. Or the ones where Madison got mad because Spencer had insulted Mason. Those were probably the worst, because of the loyalty she felt for her twin. Her thoughts were dragged back to a reality and she nodded briskly, walking over to her backpack anyway and taking out her bottle of water. “If you’re sure.” She couldn’t help but smirk slightly at his reluctance to reply to her comment about them dating. He didn’t give anything away, either, which annoyed her slightly. Who was the guy and how on earth did he manage to hide his emotions so well? She really needed to ask him at some point. Playfully, Madison stuck out her tongue at Spencer when he told her she hit like a wuss, “It’s not like I wanted to hurt you or anything, I’m not that mean.” His comment about Ravenclaw’s made her laugh, however, and she rolled her eyes at him. “That’s insane. Not all of us have huge ego’s, only the clever ones.”
Spencer had to keep the urge to make snarky comments about Mason in check. He still wasn’t her brother’s biggest fan, but he didn’t really need Madison stomping off or yelling at him. The last thing he needed was Madison to decide not to go to the dance with him and for people to feel sorry for him. Spencer Porter wasn’t someone who got pitied. It just wasn’t allowed. So even if he wasn’t exactly sure he wanted to go to this dance with Madison, he’d go. “Yeah, I’m sure.” He told her, hoping she’d drop the subject. It was hard to tell with her sometimes. He tried to not feel irritated when she smirked at him. He didn’t want Madison to feel like she had the upper hand. He wouldn’t put it past her to not use it against him. Spencer was pretty good at hiding his emotions but he knew that if anyone could find a crack in his armor, it was her. It just meant he needed to be more and more careful around her. “Good to know you don’t want to beat me up.” He joked lightly. He couldn’t imagine Madison beating anyone up. Even if she wasn’t always happy, she seemed too… Madison for violence. “Is that you saying you’re not clever if you don’t have a huge ego?” He thought Madison was definitely clever. More clever than she gave herself credit for. Not that she needed to know that. Any compliments he gave her, she’d taunt him with. It was what he’d do anyways.
Madison wondered for a brief second about why Spencer had even agreed to this. It was strange, but she’d never actually thought about why he’d agreed. Had no one else asked him or something, was that it? Or perhaps he felt sorry for her or something? She wasn’t sure, but she was certain Spencer definitely didn’t feel sorry for her. Dropping the subject almost seemed like a good idea here; and although usually, Madison would have persisted to know the truth, she didn’t this time. Her smirk only lasted for a few seconds, as she tilted her head to the side as she listened to him, her smile returning again. “Nope, that’s Mason’s job I think. Not that he likes beating anyone up, obviously.” The mention of Mason in the conversation made Madison feel a pang of guilt. Since when did she betray her twin like this? Madison had never been friends with someone that Mason didn’t like ever. It wasn’t heard of between the McCarthy twins. She wondered Mason’s opinion of it all and found her eyes travelling to ground. Dang. She needed a twin-update session with Mason ASAP, because she missed him. “Nope, not at all! I know plenty of people who are totes clever and don’t have ego’s at all.” She didn’t mention that she thought that Spencer was extremely clever. She didn’t need to. Spencer knew how clever he could be if he tried.
Spencer didn’t know if he should believe her. He couldn’t imagine Mason beating anyone up. But maybe that was because even with all the shit he had given the other boy, Mason had never even thrown a swing at him. He wouldn’t have blamed him if he did. Not that he wouldn’t have totally punched Mason back, but he would have understood it. Hopefully Mason never did punch him because he had no doubt Madison would hate him forever if he punched her twin and for some reason, he didn’t like the idea of that happening. “I still think you have some ego.” He told her, shaking his head. Spencer finally stepped back, letting go of her hands. It had been way too long of a time that they were that close. He looked around, trying not to appear nervous or unsettled. “Are we done or do you have anything else to show me?” He didn’t want to be done, not really. He liked spending time with her that wasn’t just them studying. He didn’t understand why he liked spending time with her so much. He shouldn’t want to make her smile. He knew that. But somehow he loved making her smile. It was a weird feeling. One that Spencer didn’t like at all. He just wished he could do something about it. Make… whatever this was a lot less confusing.
Madison honestly wasn’t sure if Mason actually would hit Spencer. Violence wasn’t really the done thing between the McCarthy’s, purely because they were better than that. They would prefer to beat someone through witty responses and being the better person, not by making their noses bleed or whatnot. Either way, she didn’t say anything and just silently watched Spencer take in the information. “Of course I have some ego– so do you. Having an ego isn’t a bad thing, you do know that right?” Spencer stepping back, finally, wasn’t all that surprising and she crossed her arms across her chest; taking a few step backwards and leaning against one of the table. Madison searched her mind, thinking of anything that they might have missed. “Have you finished your outfit yet?” She asked curiously, hoping that he had so they could compare their outfits. She inwardly cringed at the thought of the colours mismatching or something. Or maybe that was Madison’s way of changing the subject so that they could talk some more. She liked talking to Spencer, it was fun.
Spencer wasn’t sure what to say when it came to Mason hitting someone and he instead just took her comments with a shrug. He didn’t want to say something that was going to piss her off and many of his thoughts about Mason were a little less than nice. But she didn’t comment anymore and he let the subject drop. Any conversation about Mason was probably one best avoided. “I’m just teasing you, Madison.” He told her with a roll of his eyes. “I know ego isn’t a bad thing. I’m confident, there’s nothing wrong with that.” Trust Madison to take the things he was saying seriously. She probably didn’t know when he was being serious and when he was joking. Spencer shot her a confused look. He didn’t know if she was upset that he had pulled away. For all the teasing he did, he was certain she didn’t exactly want him. He couldn’t blame her if she did but he didn’t get that vibe from her. He might have just been reading her wrong though. Even if he wouldn’t admit it, romance wasn’t his strong suit. “My mom sent me two of the dress robes she picked out. She couldn’t choose.” He didn’t really care enough about his outfit. He would look good no matter what he wore. “One’s blue and one is red. I think she got one to match your house and the other to match mine.” His mother had gone ahead and picked when he had said he didn’t care. “What are you wearing?” Madison could wear a potato sack and look pretty. He wasn’t sure if she knew that and he wasn’t sure if he ever wanted to remind her of that. He liked Madison, maybe, but not enough to let her know. That was a bad idea.
Madison wasn’t really sure when it came to Spencer’s sarcastic and his serious sides. While they’d known of each other for a long time now, they didn’t know each other well enough yet to understand each other’s humour, and that was understandable in her mind. Still, from the little she did know, Spencer was generally quite a teasing person– as well as insulting, yet that hadn’t happened all that much these past few weeks, surprisingly enough. “I know.” She shot him another smile, because most of the things Spencer said Madison tried not to take to heart. She’d learned to do that. The confused look that Spencer had sent her caused her to frown slightly, though, because what on earth had caused that? She shot him a confused look back, not really sure what else to do. Spencer definitely was confusing in her mind. “You okay there?” She asked again, raising an eyebrow at him. “Well, my outfit is a light shade of blue.” It had taken Madison absolutely ages to figure out what she was supposed to wear, but she’d found the perfect outfit soon enough. She thought it was sweet that his mum seemed to be helping him out with dress robes, though.
Spencer wondered if maybe he should insult Madison more. But part of him didn’t want to. He had realized that he liked her smiling at him much more than he liked her glaring at him. He didn’t know why. Madison shouldn’t make him feel anything but she did. “Oh, and I thought you thought I was a modest person.” Spencer replied, rolling his eyes. They both knew he wasn’t modest at all. “I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be fine?” He knew he probably seemed a bit too defensive, but maybe she would just take it as something he normally did. He hoped so at least. He didn’t know if he wanted to stay or run. “So probably the blue one?” He asked with a raised eyebrow in return. He didn’t exactly know what matched and what clashed. He mostly just wore his uniform and he wasn’t exactly the best at fashion. Not that he cared to be. “When do you want to meet by the way?” He figured they’d meet in the great hall, but he didn’t know if she wanted him to escort her or something.
Madison noticed Spencer rolling his eyes and chuckled at him, shaking her head at the same time. “I think we both know that’s not true.” She answered. Spencer was the least modest person she’d ever met– and that included Piers and Kitty. Spencer shooting the question back at her was a little odd, though. Why wouldn’t he be fine? Madison wasn’t sure. He was just acting weirdly and defensive all of a sudden. “Uh– I don’t know? You just seemed kinda defensive.” She didn’t want to push him, however, because honestly it was nothing to do with her. Nodding, Madison answered, “That sounds good–” She cast her mind to what she had expected in terms of meeting before the dance, and honestly, she didn’t mind just meeting in the Great Hall. Meeting beforehand would mean less time being spent on getting ready, and Madison wasn’t one to give away that time. “In the Main Hall, perhaps?” She suggested with a light shrug.
Spencer shrugged his shoulders, not really able to deny that. They did both know that wasn’t true. He didn’t see the point of being all demure and modest about what someone was good at. False modesty was bullshit. “I’m not defensive.” He knew that it was kind of defeating the purpose of claiming that he wasn’t being defensive by acting defensively but he didn’t really care. Madison always seemed to rub him the wrong way, and maybe the right way but he wasn’t going there. He just really wished she would stop this psychoanalyzing his behavior stuff. It was getting old and even if he didn’t want to admit it, he knew he was bound to slip up if she kept looking at him that way. Spencer just nodded when she said it sounded good. Whatever would stop her from complaining he was okay with. “The Main Hall works.” He responded, crossing his arms over his chest. “Just thought you wanted me to escort you or something.” Maybe Madison wanted to make some weird, creepy incest twin entrance with Mason. He wouldn’t put it past them. Part of him was surprised they weren’t going together.
Madison was amused by how defensive Spencer was being about her questions– regardless of how unimportant they were. It wasn’t like she was insulting him or anything. He had no reason to be defensive. “Okay.” She said, her tone dripping with evident sarcasm, but once again, she wasn’t going to push him for answers. Whatever was going on with him was his truth, his choice, not hers. She kept having to remind herself that being concerned about him wasn’t going to help anyone. If he didn’t want to tell her, then she had no reason to worry. Did she? Her eyes remained on him as he spoke, not slipping even for a second. The mention of Spencer escorting her to the Main Hall caused her to raise an eyebrow. Unfortunately, Madison was well aware of what this would mean in terms of the gossip– that spread around rapidly before Madison could even say 'twinning’. “Escort me?” She repeated, her voice far firmer than before as she carefully considered it. The whole 'escorting’ process sounded very much like a Princess being picked up before the Ball in the Muggle Fairytale story she’d heard of; not that Madison had any sort of object with anything like that. “Surely that’s not necessary? I’m sure you’d much prefer to spend as little time with me as possible.” While her words were cutting and smooth, they were spoken light-heartedly and her grin had returned.
Spencer knew that he wasn’t exactly winning in this game of - he wasn’t sure if it was wits or just banter or something entirely different - but he was pretty sure if someone judged, Madison would definitely be succeeding over him. That was the one thing he always found annoying about Madison McCarthy. Usually no matter what he said, he couldn’t get her upset. It was why he spent most of his time messing with Mason. Mason was the easier target by far. Spencer wasn’t going to fling insults at someone who was rarely affected by them. That just wasn’t something he considered fun. He resisted the urge to snap at her when he heard the sarcasm in her voice but he kept his temper in check. He didn’t like feeling mocked, that was what he did after all, and he had a feeling Madison was mocking him. Blowing up at her was probably a bad idea though so he just let the subject drop, not even glaring at her. “Yeah, escort.” He replied, shooting her a glare. She was probably mocking him again. “Just forget about it. You’re right. I don’t want to spend time with you.” Spencer knew his reply was rude, but he didn’t really care right now. Madison could go gossip to Mason all he cared. Madison somehow always seemed to annoy him, even when she smiling and obviously joking. Just something about her. It infuriated him that he wasn’t sure what bugged him so much about her.
Madison could feel some sort of a tension rise between them both again and inwardly sighed. It seemed as though as soon as they actually got somewhere, some sort of a tension built up immediately and made them awkward and tense all over again. It was exhausting and Madison really didn’t have the energy for it. She could be doing better things than this. Like rehearsing for her audition. Or spending time with Mason. This seemed pointless to her when her efforts at making them at least bond were messed up. Maybe Mason was right, because friends with Spencer was a hopeless case. She stood up abruptly and made her way over to where she had slung her backpack, picking up swiftly and turning to Spencer. “I’ll see you at the dance, Spencer.” Her tone was icy and uncaring, a complete comparison to her carefree tone beforehand.
Spencer realized immediately that he had fucked up. He just didn’t understand why he cared. He shouldn’t care that Madison liked or disliked him. She was nothing to him. She could hate him all she wanted and it wouldn’t bother him whatsoever. He had told himself repeatedly they weren’t friends, he just had a hard time remembering it at times and he didn’t understand why. He almost apologized. He almost told Madison he was sorry, but he couldn’t. It would be just his luck if she thought he was into her because he was nice that one time. So he shrugged, leaning down to pick up his own backpack. “Yeah, whatever. See you there, Madison.” Spencer replied, forcing disinterest into his voice. She hated him, it wasn’t like he had to play nice. They might be goofing off at one point, but they weren’t close and they never were going to be. The McCarthy twins weren’t going to be people he ever wanted to hang out with. They were just too different.

I WISH YOU WOULD → MADENCER
TAGGING: Spencer Porter and Madison McCarthy
TIMELINE: Friday, April 17th, 2023.
SETTING: Hogwarts Castle.
SUMMARY: Spencer and Madison meet at the McCarthy twins party.
Madison: didn't really want to return to the party after what had happened with Ryder and Blaine. She had messed up twice. How had she even managed to do that? Madison, who usually spent so much time and consideration with her actions so she could do no wrong was now absolutely terrified of herself. So instead, Madison stood on the edge of the dancefloor and awkwardly smiled at everyone passing her. Dang, what time was it, anyway? She was absolutely exhausted. Leaning against the wall and running her hands through her hair, Madison bit down on her lower lip and let out a small sigh. The music had somehow gotten even louder since she last heard it, and it was grazing against her last nerve. All determination to enjoy the party had vanished and she now just wanted to just sleep and forget any of this ever happened. Spencer: didn't even know why he had bothered showing up at the party. Yeah, he might not have minded parties but he didn't exactly like Madison or Mason. He spent most of his time throwing insults their way, they weren't exactly likely to get friendship bracelets and be attached at the waist. But he had told Madison that he would start being a little nicer and he had to grudgingly admit that he probably should be a bit more... polite to the girl who was tutoring him. He probably wouldn't have cared but his father had started getting on his case about his grades and he might as well do something to correct them. If only to stop the old man from nagging him. He looked around the room, trying to spot Madison. He could give her her present and leave before anyone else noticed he was here. He didn't really need it to get out that he was being nice to people and he didn't need McCarthy number 2 to question why he was suddenly being nice. It was too much of a headache. He spotted her at the edge, and walked towards her.
Madison: hadn't actually spotted Spencer yet, so she had simply assumed he wasn't going to be arriving at their party. Not that it suprised her in the slightest; Spencer had made it very clear that he had low tolerance for her and Mason. Madison had started to find herself giving up of winning his approval, and she instead just tried to be as friendly as possible. Madison still had yet to snap properly at him. Not that she would, of course. That just wasn't like her at all. Looking up, her eyes locked with Spencer, who seemed to be making his way towards her. Which was...Slightly surprising. She wasn't sure how to perceive Spencer at all; one moment he was expressing his somewhat intense hatred for her and her twin, and the next he was agreeing to tutoring.
Spencer: told himself that maybe it would be best to just leave without giving Madison her present. It's not like she needed a present, she was just tutoring him. It wasn't like she had cured cancer or something amazing. But maybe a present would keep her from sabotaging his grades when he least expected it, not that he really expected Madison to ever be that deceptive. He was just covering his bases after all. He was just about to turn and run for it when her eyes locked with his. "Fuck." He swore under his breath. He was trapped. If he left now, he'd look like a complete moron. He kept walking, finally stopping in front of her. "McCarthy." He greeted, keeping her present behind his back. He didn't know if she could even hear him over how loud the music was. "Where's your brother? I thought you two were attached at the hip." Spencer sniped, not resisting the urge to at least get one in. He was entitled to that, if he was going to be nice to her from now on. With his luck, she'd expect them to be best friends
Madison: wasn't really sure what Spencer's intentions were of being here, but Madison was not going to be thrilled if she found out that he was only there to poke fun at her, or something like that. It wasn't like Spencer's words usually ever ended up actually hurting her, but Madison wasn't really in the mood for it right now. Still, she was the host of this party, so she guessed she had to be polite. As polite as she could be, anyway. "Hi!" Her smile was quickly added to lighten the mood, and Madison hoped he hadn't noticed the tear stains in the darkness. He'd probably end up laughing about that, too. "Oh, no, he's over there, I think--" Madison vaguely pointed across to the dancefloor, except she wasn't quite sure where he was, "-- But we're not actually joined to the hip all of the time, silly! Only for most of it. How are you finding the party?" Anything to change the subject was definitely welcome. Spencer: frowned at Madison, not sure what was up. He couldn't put a finger on it, but something was off. He wasn't sure if he imagined the strain in her voice as she said hi or the quiver in her smile. It wasn't like he spent a lot of time paying attention to Madison. Spencer pushed the thoughts out his head. If Madison was upset, it wasn't his issue. He didn't need to worry about it. He shrugged at her reply. He didn't really care where Mason was. "You still have a weird symbiotic relationship." He muttered, pressing against the wall as someone tried to walk past him and glanced back at Madison. "I just got here. And it's a party, doesn't seem like anything special." He told her dismissively. Spencer paused for a second before speaking again. "What are you doing all the way over here? Aren't you supposed to be enjoying your party?" He didn't really expect Madison to be avoiding people. She was too happy for that. He was happy she wasn't surrounded by people, but he had still expected to have to go through ten people
Madison: noticed Spencer frowning at her and immediately her eyes fell to the ground. She didn't want questioning and she definitely didn't want questioning from Spencer, of all people. Not right now. Any other day and any other time? Madison would have been happy to talk to him. But right now she wasn't, at all. "I mean, you call it weird, I call it awesome! It's still the same thing." The positivity that Madison tried to keep in her voice was still flowing, except her voice was quivering slightly and if Spencer looked down, he would see how her hands were shaking slightly. His dismissive tone shook her slightly, and she came to the quick decision that she was going to be as blunt as possible to get him to leave her alone. "-- I'm just getting a drink."She lied, gesturing to the drinks table behind them both. Spencer knew something was wrong. Madison was usually not this... nervous looking. Especially not when she dropped her eyes to the ground. Something was off. Despite himself, he couldn't help but feel concerned. He pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind savagely. Why was he concerned about Madison McCarthy? He dropped the conversation about her creepy relationship with her brother with a nonchalant shrug, something telling him not to push it right now. "Yeah, whatever you say." He glanced over at the drink table at her comment, considering it lightly. "Were you, then why weren't you over there instead of staring into space?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "C'mon, let's get you a drink." He said, more kindly than he usually would, placing a hand on her arm and tugging her gently over to the drinks. "Anything interesting or the basic stuff?" He asked, glancing back at her. He told himself he was curious about what was up with her, nothing more. Madison sensed that Spencer was catching on to her change in mood, and Madison wasn't surprised. Spencer wasn't stupid, he was far from it, in fact. Madison had no doubt that he didn't even need all that much help during their tutor sessions, just motivation. Motivation was something Madison absolutely loved, so in some ways, it worked. "Is a girl not allowed to think?" She shot back, an eyebrow raised at him, suddenly defensive. Spencer wasn't an idiot, no. He would've figured out by now that she was lying to him. The sudden act of kindness, however, shocked her, and she looked up at him, surprised. Silently, she allowed Spencer to tug her over to the drinks table. "Define interesting." Spencer couldn't help but smirk at her, meeting her eyes. Her face looked... different somehow but he couldn't exactly pinpoint what was wrong. "You think? I thought you were just happy 24/7." His voice was more teasing than cruel though. Even he wasn't enough of an asshole to be mean to someone who seemed... sad, especially not on their birthday. He glanced over at the drinks before glancing back at her. "Alcoholic or non-alcoholic?" He didn't really think either McCarthy was ballsy enough to supply their birthday party with liquor. The legal age in the Wizard world might be 17, but they were both too much of a boy scout and a girl scout. Some others, maybe, but not them. "What do you drink? Fruit punch? Milk? Or is that not healthy enough? Maybe water." Madison felt her cheeks turn crimson as his eyes met hers, feeling suddenly embarrassed, before she quickly diverted her gaze away from his and onto the drinks. That was until he mentioned his perception of her attitude and she quirked an eyebrow curiously, "Nobody is happy 24/7, Spencer. Let's be realistic here." Normally, Madison would have just smiled off his questions with an answer about how being positive was great, but Madison really didn't have the energy. She was exhausted and just wanted to sleep by this point. "I'll have water, please. I've drank a little too much tonight and I don't think drinking anymore is going to help, surprisingly enough." She gave a small smile across at him. "What about you?" Spencer felt triumphant when Madison turned red and looked away from him. He usually didn't get much of a reaction out of her, so every little thing he got out of her made her grin. He almost couldn't contain his shock when the words coming out of her mouth sounded very un-Madison. "Realistic? I didn't know you knew what that meant." Spencer replied, shaking his head at her. "Are you saying your feathers get... ruffled on occasion?" Honestly, they looked a bit ruffled now but he wasn't going to pry if she didn't want him to. It wasn't his issue. He started laughing when she said she had already drank enough. "You, drink? Don't kid me, McCarthy." He told her, crushing his arms across his chest. He'd believe that when he saw it. He leaned over to the drink table, rooting around for a water and handed it to her. He paused to consider her words before walking back over to the drink table and grabbing a bottle of butterbeer. "I don't need to wake up with a pounding headache." Spencer said with a shrug. Madison bit down on her lower lip, wishing she could somehow magic Mason to be there right now with them because this was not a situation she wanted to be in at all. This was honestly the longest time she'd ever been apart from her twin-- she'd spent hours not speaking to him at all that night, which actually was a lot of fun, surprisingly. It reminded her of what things were like before she had to take care of him. "If I didn't know the meaning of realistic, Spencer, I think we'd have a bit of an issue with me being your tutor." Madison wasn't even bothering to make whatever joke that even was funny. "Yes, I'm saying that, like a normal girl, I get angry and I get sad. I thought that was obvious?" She looked completely confused as to why Spencer seemed to be under the impression she happy ALL the time. Was that even possible? "I'm being serious!" Madison protested when he starter to laugh, her eyebrow quirking again as she took the water. "I think that's already on the cards for me, but sensible idea." She replied with a nod. Spencer rolled his eyes at her, not surprised she was taking everything he said so seriously. "I was joking, Madison. Relax." He scoffed. He didn't usually get this type of reaction from her. Either she was in a very bad mood or she had just reached the end of her rope. Or both. "I know you're a normal girl." He paused for a second, throwing her another smile. "At least sometimes you are." The twin thing was completely freaky. "You're way too much of a good girl for that." He told her, still not believing her. "I'm sure someone has a hangover remedy or something if you really are hung over." He considered her for another minute, finally coming to a decision. "Alright, if you're really drunk, let me smell your breath then." He knew she wouldn't agree to it. He didn't expect Madison to let him get anywhere near her. Madison was pleasantly surprised when he called her by her first name, uncertain as to this sudden change of heart. "Oh, okay." Her answer was short, hopefully signalling the end of that topic. Instead Madison fiddled nervously with her hands, feeling suddenly awkward again as a silence settled between them. "You do?" She questioned with another raised eyebrow. The way he spoke to Mason and her didn't show that at all. Madison had always thought that Spencer had assumed she was part Alien or something, the way he treated them. "Do you really think I'm a good girl?" Madison chuckled, looking over at him, slightly shocked. Madison was known for her great grades and poilte manners, so it wasn't that much of a shock. Yet if she was that much of a good girl, why had she held this party? She was surprised, to say at the least, by Spencer's next request, but shrugged. "Fine." Spencer dropped the topic, the idea of needling her more just making him somewhat wary. He would have normally welcomed a fight, but the music was making his head pound. He told himself that it was simply because he was tired and not because he felt sorry for her at all. "You might be weird as fuck, but I don't think you're going to eat my soul or anything." Not that he had ever met a vampire or an alien or whatever magic monstrosities existed, but he really didn't think Madison or Mason were anything but human. Not that he'd tell them that most days and if Madison ever brought this convo up again, he'd lie. "You're such a girl scout, it's crazy." It was honestly just a bit sickening. But whatever, it wasn't his problem. He leaned close when she said fine, pausing inches from her face. He smelt the alcohol on her breath but instead of moving away, he glanced from her eyes to her lips. He had never imagined kissing Madison McCarthy but... suddenly it didn't seem like such a bad idea. Madison found herself glad when the topic was finally dropped, having lost interest in speaking about that at all. The thought of eating Spencer's soul was enough to make Madison fall into stiches of laughter, and she grinned across at him. "Didn't I tell you I'm a secret Vampire here?" Never in her life had she expected to actually be laughing with Spencer Porter. It was strange. This really was the strangest night. "I've never actually been in Scouts before but I swear they were the cutest Uniforms, so I'm not really complaining." She shrugged. When he leaned in close, Madison felt her breath hitching slightly, obviously because she didn't like him and she felt awkward. Obviously. After a few seconds, when she had expected him to pull away, she frowned slightly. He was so close to her that it made her feel intoxicated, dizzy. What on earth was he doing? Why was he staring at her like that and why wasn't she pulling away from him? Spencer wouldn't admit it but he liked the sound of Madison laughing. It hurt his ears a lot less than the sound of her yelling at him, not that that happened often either. "Don't vampires drink blood, not eat souls anyways? Or are you a new one?" He couldn't keep the smile off his face as he leaned up against the wall. Spending time with Madison didn't make him want to gouge his eyes out like he thought. And she was easy on the eyes. "Of course you'd be drawn to the outfits." The boy scout ones looked lame as hell, so he wasn't exactly planning on joining so he could make a fashion statement. Spencer ignored that his heart sped up the longer he looked at her. It was... something else. He didn't know what but it wasn't a result of being too close to Madison McCarthy. He almost did it. His hands were drifting up to cup her chin and kiss her when he pulled back suddenly, almost as if he had been burned. "Jeez, you might want to invest in some breath mints, McCarthy." Madison was surprisingly having a lot of fun. Turns out that Spencer Porter actually had a good sense of humour when he was in this kind of mood-- she wasn't sure what kind of moods he had, but she liked the mood he was in now better than his usual one. "Hmm, I'm thinking a new one." She smiled as she answered, before adding. "Drinking blood is kind of gross anyway." Why was it only then did Madison notice the actual attractive qualities Spencer actually had? Like...She'd spent so long assuming he was this awful person because of what he said to her and Mason, yet never taken into account that he wasn't all that bad really, and he wasn't gross to look at either? "Just because the boys ones are totally strange and you're jealous." She teased lightly, remembering when she had looked up the scouts outfits for her and Mason after being curious about the club. Her heart had started hammering against her chest and she suddenly was starting to feel dizzy, almost as if she was going to fall, except she knew she wasn't? It was definitely the strangest thing she had ever felt before. Almost as quickly as it had starter, Spencer had pulled back and was making some snarky remark about her. The McCarthy nickname was back again and it was almost as if he had changed to a completely different person in the prospect of seconds. Was he really going to kiss her? And why on earth had she been so willing to kiss him back? "Right-- Okay. Thanks for the tip." She murmured shortly, taking a few steps back away from him. Spencer found it was much harder to ignore how pretty Madison was when she was smiling at him and laughing at the things he said. It wasn't like he didn't know she was pretty, but most of the time he put it out of his mind how attractive she and her brother were. It was easier to say snarky things to them if he didn't think about kissing them. "New one, huh? What are you going to call yourself?" He asked her, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. "Good to know you don't have a blood fetish. I won't need to run away whenever I hurt myself on the pitch. "Jealous? I don't do jealous, Madison." He told her, shooting her a mock scandalized look. "Maybe you should try to be a scout. Maybe they'd let you in." He backed away from her quickly, grabbing the present he had gotten her from where he had left it on the drink table. "This is for you. For the tutoring. I - uh, gotta go." He stammered out, wanting to punch himself in the face. Spencer Porter didn't do nervous so why was Madison making him nervous. Madison thought for a few seconds, tilting her head to the side as she thought. "Hmm, I'm not sure yet. The name has got to be great, though. Do you have any ideas?" She asked curiously, her eyes looking across at him. "That would be kind of awful if I did have a blood fetish, don't you think? Well the boys uniforms are gross, though, you have to give me that one." She chuckled as she pictured the uniform, having to hide her grin as she thought about what it'd look like on Spencer. "Perhaps." From the way in which Spencer backed away from her, suddenly so closed off and enclosed, told Madison immediately what this was. A drunken mistake, perhaps? Not even that. Both eyebrows rose when he passed her a present, however, and she stared at him, silently taking it. She didn't know what to say. What could she even say? "Thanks." Her tone was empty, toneless almost, in comparison to what it had been only minutes before. It looked as though he was nervous, though, which confused Madison even more. What was it with the male species that made her head so confused and conflicted, anyway? Spencer shrugged his shoulders, giving her an amused look. "Who says I'm creative with that stuff? Aren't you the smart one?" Gryffindors were good with the whole bravery and courage thing, no one said they had to be good at thinking things up. "Just twist demon into something cool. Like Demonai, I don't know." That was honestly the best he could do. He really was terrible. "Yeah, I'm not a teenage girl so I wouldn't find that hot." Spencer teased her, a smirk gracing his face again. "I'm not going to admire uniforms of kids." He told her, frowning at her. He didn't like admitting when he was wrong about something. Or jealous for that matter. He definitely wasn't going to be jealous about scout uniforms. Spencer told himself this was a bad idea. Getting anywhere near Madison was a bad idea." Yeah, you're welcome." He said hastily, looking around for a quick getaway. "I see... uh, Clara. Bye." He managed to get out, brushing past her and ignoring how much her arm touching his made his heart hammer. Fuck. He was screwed. Madison McCarthy was someone he needed to stay far away from or he'd do something he'd regret.
