Iâve talked a little bit about how at least one ~negative aspect~ of white supremacy/racism that impacts white people is that it can be SO DIFFICULT to avoid being Accidentally Racist over something that really shouldnât have been that deep, and WOULDNâT have been that deep if not for the pervasiveness of white supremacy in america, and this bit about the lil country band Lady Antebellum and the controversy surrounding their name illustrates that pretty well, I think:
The band members have always said that the band's name was chosen arbitrarily, complaining about the difficulty of choosing a name. Inspired by the "country" style nostalgia of a photo shoot at a mansion from the Antebellum South, they said, "one of us said the word and we all kind of stopped and said, man, that could be a name"[40] and "Man that's a beautiful Antebellum house, and that's cool, maybe there's a haunted ghost or something in there like Lady Antebellum."[41] Haywood concluded, "[We] had a lady in the group, obviously, and threw Lady in the front of it for no reason. I wish we had a great resounding story to remember for the name, but it stuck ever since."[40] The name was always controversial, with a critic in Ms. Magazine writing in 2011 that the band's name "seems to me an example of the way we still â nearly 150 years after the end of the Civil War, nearly 50 years after the Civil Rights Act; and in a supposedly post-racial country led by a biracial president â glorify a culture that was based on the violent oppression of people of color".[41][42]
On June 11, 2020, joining widespread commercial response to the George Floyd protests,[41] the band announced it would abbreviate its name to its existing nickname "Lady A"[43] in an attempt to blunt the name's racist connotations.[1] The band members stated on social media that, never having previously sought the dictionary definition of the word "antebellum", they now consulted their "closest black friends and colleagues" so that their "eyes opened wide to the injustices, inequality and biases black women and men have always faced and continue to face every day. Now, blind spots we didn't even know existed have been revealed."[44] Fan response was mixed, with many decrying virtue signaling or even disparaging the protests.[41]American Songwriter said, "Given that the world knows what that A stands for, to many this change does little more than add extra insult to this ongoing injury."[45]
The next day, it was widely reported that the name "Lady A" had already been in use for more than 20 years by Seattle-based African American activist and blues, soul, funk, and gospel singer Anita White. The band again admitted ignorance of any prior use, which White called "pure privilege". Interviewed by Rolling Stone, White described the band's token acknowledgement of racism while blithely appropriating an African American artist's name: "They're using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time. If it mattered, it would have mattered to them before. It shouldn't have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it. It's an opportunity for them to pretend they're not racist". A veteran music industry lawyer observed that such name clashes are uncommon due to the existence of the Internet.[46][47] The band members contacted White the next week to apologize for having inadvertently co-opted and dominated her name,[48] saying that the Black Lives Matter movement had inspired them to a collaborative attitude. They nonetheless required retaining the same name, though she believed dual-naming is inherently impossible.[49]She said "We talked about attempting to co-exist but didn't discuss what that would look like"[48] because the band members would not directly respond to that explicit question three times during the conversation or in two contract drafts. She soon submitted a counteroffer that either the band would be renamed, or that her act would be renamed for a $5 million fee plus a $5 million donation to be split between Seattle charities, a nationwide legal defense fund for independent artists, and Black Lives Matter.[49]
On July 8, 2020, the band filed a lawsuit against White, asking a Nashville court to affirm its longstanding trademark of the name. The press release read: "Today we are sad to share that our sincere hope to join together with Anita White in unity and common purpose has ended. She and her team have demanded a $10 million payment, so reluctantly we have come to the conclusion that we need to ask a court to affirm our right to continue to use the name Lady A, a trademark we have held for many years."[50]
On September 15, 2020, White filed a counter-suit asserting her claim to the Lady A trademark and rejecting the notion that both artists could operate in the same industry under the same brand identity. She is seeking damages for lost sales and a weakened brand, along with royalties from any income the band receives under the Lady A moniker.[51][52]
Like????????? this REALLY didnât need to be a thing.Â
And one thing I think black folks and other poc need to chill out with is dismissing any white personâs attempt at Being Better in how they move through a white supremacist world in a way that seeks to undo or at least not exacerbate white supremacy. I can TOTALLY believe that, in their white ignorant bliss, this band really did choose their name without realizing for a moment that it might leave a fucked up taste in some peopleâs mouths. Honestly like... antebellum IS a cool sounding word lmfao and if it wasnât so heavily associated with slavery-era america, iâd wanna name something antebellum, too!Â
And like, yes, itâs true that it ~shouldnât have taken george floydâs death~ for anyone at all to suddenly decide that they want to go a little bit out of their way to denounce or at least not seem to promote racism in some small way. But it did. And it does. And every fucking time thereâs a gross act of violence and injustice acted out on a person of color in front of the world, thereâs always going to be a brand new white person out there who Sees The Light for the very first time. That doesnât mean their new perspective isnât genuine, and it doesnât mean it happened All Of A Sudden. If anything, it was something theyâd been thinking about for a long time, but didnât know how to address it, or what to say, or who to say it to, or how to talk about it in their own community. OBVIOUSLY that problem is WAY LESS BAD than, ya know, actually experiencing racism, but itâs still a real thing that some white folks go through, and being mad about it isnât going to make it NOT a real thing. it shouldnât have taken george floydâs death. it shouldnât have taken trayvon martinâs death. it shouldnât have taken the instatement of one of the most vile human beings to ever assault the face of the earth for This Person or That Person to finally want to make a positive and public change, BUT IT DID. It always does. That, unfortunately, is How It Works.Â
And so, this band adjusts itâs name in an effort to not seem hostile. OBVIOUSLY itâs not a grand show of solidarity. OBVIOUSLY itâs not meant to convince anyone that theyâre Super Amazing White People Who Will Stop At Nothing For Racial Equality. It was literally just a small, simple gesture. Theyâre just modifying their image, because they were no longer comfortable with knowing how that word makes a lot of people feel. Bc like... letâs be real: probably a solid ZERO of their fanbase would have given a shit if theyâd just left the name as it was. Nobody whoâs going to a Lady Antebellum concert was pouting about the name. And if anything, they prolly stood a better chance of LOSING fans for ~being politically correct~ than gaining fans for changing their name to something less annoying.Â
And it JUST SO HAPPENS that the slight lil adjustment they made to their name steps on the toes of an existing artist, and it JUST SO HAPPENS that this artist is black, and is also an ACTIVIST in social and racial justice.Â
Oops.Â
And so, obviously people donât interpret it as an honest mistake. Instead, itâs a result of white privilege. And I mean like??? ok, maybe it is. But I ALSO had never heard of Anita White until I read this fucking wiki page lmfao. So like... my ignorance isnât due to no white privilege on my part. Maybe itâs a consequence of a white supremacist culture that wouldnât glorify her and celebrate her and put her name everywhere... but thatâs a different thing from privilege.Â
So now not only are the bands efforts to adjust to a world thatâs becoming more aware of racial injustice being dismissed as disingenuous or too-little-too-late, but now theyâre ALSO being accused of Using Their White Privilege to trample all over an artist theyâd never heard of.Â
i DO think that after finding out the name was already taken, and after talking with her about it and determining that she wasnât interested in sharing - as is her right - they should have just said âok, sorry, thanks for talking with us about itâ and picked something different. i think itâs kinda ridiculous that they think they should sue her and i think sheâs HELLA right for suing their asses right back, and I hope she gets her damn money.Â
But Iâm also cognizant of how emotionally/psychologically upsetting it can feel to have to just Change Your Name after so many years of living with it. It makes sense that despite their desire to adapt and choose a new name that doesnât make people cringe, they still want to try to hold on to the feeling that THEY associated with their own name. âLady Aâ seemed like a happy medium: They can remain Who They Are while also showing that Who They Are is someone whoâs not trying to glorify a disgusting era of history. But if âLady Aâ isnât an option... whatâs left? What else could they call themselves that wouldnât feel like a totally new, alien identity??Â
So, I understand how, on an emotional level, they want to fight to keep it.Â
But uh. They really need to just Be Sad about it and let it go. Just consider it one of the small, upsetting sacrifices that white folks may sometimes have to make as we ALL struggle and stumble through this fuckin long-ass road of Making The World Less Terrible For People Of Color, and move on.Â
But yeah, like.Â
Itâs fucking ridiculous that this was even an issue, and it was only an issue because of racism!!!!! If white supremacists didnât manufacture a culture that oppresses people of color and glorifies the pre-civil-war era SPECIFICALLY for the good ol slavery, then perhaps people could wax poetic about the artistic and environmental aesthetic of that era without it being assumed that they Must Be Racist. Bc like??? idk if yall know this lmfao but i LOVE????? colonial american music. like, the kind of stuff with that Ashokan Farewell vibe. I think it sounds beautiful. And i really fuckin love the black spiritual music that was developed in that time. and i think so much of the architecture and fashion was so???? Nice. Just pleasant! But I canât even get myself to fully enjoy it because of all the fuckin connotations that have been stuck to it.Â
A band should be able to name theirself a name without it being such a goddamn fucking cultural crisis.Â
But they canât! And it is!Â
Thanks, White Supremacy!Â

Who was the last person you had an intelligent debate with?: I donât really have debates with anyone other than Gab or Angela. Iâll have deep discussions with my other friends, but they never turn into a debate.
Who was the last person who cooked something for you?:Â My dad. Technically he just reheated stuff tonight, but he was still also the one who cooked for us this morning for breakfast.
Who was the last person who you heard singing?:Â My mom. She does karaoke by herself one or two times a week for funsies and will sing songs from her day for an hour or so, and she did it tonight.
Who was the last person you kissed and it meant something?: Gabie, but itâs been a whilllllle.Â
Who was the last person you were upset with?:Â This girl that Iâm classmates with for a layout class, Mikee. Horrible work ethic. So just for context, I currently have a grade of INC (Incomplete) for the layout class I took last semester because my prof wasnât satisfied with our final output, which are a class magazine and a class newspaper; and when you have an INC, you typically have a year to fulfill the missing requirement/s (except in our case, we only have half a year because we have graduating students in the class, including me). Now that weâre inching closer to graduation and the college is supposed to release the official list of graduating students soon, I have to make sure ALL my grades are in. Mikee volunteered to be the one to contact our prof for submitting our work, and even though weâve finished up and polished our revised outputs, she is taking FOREVER to email the prof for whatever fucking reason. Iâm getting antsy by the hour and am desperate for a bit of urgency on her end because if my name doesnât end up on the list of graduates I definitely wouldnât hesitate to lash out on her.
Who was the last person you danced with?: Angela, Gabie, and Hans. And some other ADMU dudes Iâve never hung out with other than at that party.
Who was the last person you felt awkward around?: My dad. He made pancakes from scratch earlier and I think his measurements werenât 100% spot on, because they came out incredibly dense and bland. I was already cranky enough this morning â and I still hadnât known he made them himself â so I scowled when I took my first few bites because I thought it tasted off and even asked if it was some kind of vegetarian pancake. Once he said he made it from scratch, I felt awkward, shut up, and wolfed my plate down to show him that I enjoyed it and to make up for my horrid behavior just seconds before.
Who was the last person who borrowed something from you?: My mom borrowed my car (which is technically my parentsâ anyway because they bought it lmao) to go to work today.
Who was the last person who showed you how to do something?: My dad. I wanted to get reacquainted with making stuff in the kitchen so he showed me how to cook hotdogs properly. I was already making them before, but after one time that one of our stove burners emitted a huge flame when I turned it on, I stopped making any food altogether for a while.
Who was the last person you went shopping with?: My mom.
Who was the last person you had a crush on?: Song Joong Ki hahaaaaaaah.
Who was the last person who made you cry?: The amazing actor from Descendants of the Sun playing the troubled rookie doctor. I looked him up and apparently heâs also one of the lead vocalists of SHINee, so he must be talented as all hell.
Who was the last person you shared a bed with?: Kimi, 45 seconds before he jumped off.
Who was the last person you got drunk with?: Angela, Hans, Gabie, Aids...I donât remember the others anymore but they were cool and funny people. Idk, we were a big group so yeah.
Who was the last person who touched your hair?: Just me.
What was the last pair of shoes you wore?: A pair of Nikes to walk my dog.
What was the last birthday party you attended?: My cousinâs, auntâs, and grandmaâs. Their birthdays all fall on the same week in December, so itâs tradition for us to go over to my auntâs to celebrate.
What was the last thing you said to your mother?: Something about thesis. I was telling her that I included her and dad and my four grandparents in my acknowledgments.
What was the last song you listened to?: I was listening to BeyoncĂŠâs Homecoming a few hours ago but Iâm too lazy to check what song was it I paused.
What was the last thing you thought about before going to sleep last night?: I wasnât thinking of anything, I was just focused on falling asleep.
What was the last fun thing you did with your family?: Video-calling other relatives.
What was the last thing you borrowed from someone?: My dadâs earphones...and Iâve kept them for the meantime too lol thanks dad.
What was the last vegetable you ate?: String beans.
What was the last thing you bought online?: A Hydro Flask and several necklaces.
What was the last thing you had to drink?: I donât *have* to drink it but I did make myself a cup of coffee tonight.
What was the last reason you went to see a doctor?: Had to get my eye checked. Sucks that I couldnât and canât have a follow-up appointment especially since my left eye still acts up from time to time.
What was the last non-food item you purchased?: Soju lmaaaaaooo.
What was the last type of yogurt you ate?: I hate yogurt.
What was the last fast food place you ate at?: Jollibee. We didnât eat inside though, we just got the food delivered to our home. I think the last fast food place I was actually inside of was McDonaldâs.
What was the last thing that bothered you and kept you awake?: I havenât been bothered by anything in a while. Caffeine is the only thing keeping me up these days.
When was the last time you embarrassed yourself? I had sort of a Eureka moment earlier tonight when I suddenly recalled my paternal grandparentsâ whole names. I had opted to use their nicknames in my acknowledgments and didnât think anything of it, but then I remembered what their actual full first names were and then felt embarrassed within myself that I submitted a final draft with their nicknames. HAHAHA itâs a good things are less chill with the lockdown in place so I was able to explain and resubmit with the necessary revisions.
When was the last time you watched a movie with someone?: January-ish. I watched Hello Love Goodbye with Gabie.
When was the last time you charged your phone?: A few hours ago.
When was the last time you were sick with a cold?: Itâs been...a while. I rarely get sick with anything so I donât get to keep track of whenever I do.
When was the last time you spoke to a family member on the phone?: My birthday when my lola called.
When was the last time it rained where you live?: A couple of days ago, I think.
When was the last time you laid awake, unable to sleep?: This afternoon. I wanted to sleep the heat off, but it was just so uncomfortable I just ended up twisting and turning and sweating more. MAAAAAAN I canât wait for June.
When was the last time you met someone new?: A week or so ago when I went on a following spree on this blog and started talking to a couple of them. Lol following spree in the survey community means following 3 or 4 blogs, but still.
When was the last time you filled up your car with petrol/gas?:Â Gotta be the first week of March as that was the last time I was able to drive a lot.
When was the last time you ate popcorn?: Some months ago, Iâm guessing? There was a brief time that my mom bought popcorn kernels to make bowls of popcorn for us, but we got tired of it pretty easily so there was no reason for her to keep buying more packs.
When was the last time you went to a school event? I went to the Lantern Parade last December, as is tradition for my schoolâs community. I was mostly alone because my friends had to leave early and Gabie was stuck in traffic all evening and didnât arrive til like, 9:30 PM, which sounds sad for me lol but it was still a fun experience.
When was the last time you took the trash out?: My parents donât give me that task.
When was the last time you did anything to change your appearance?: Fucking March, a week before the lockdown. Okodlkjfffjsj donât remind me Iâm still pressed about it. No one got to see my short hair and bangs grrrrrrrr
When was the last time you cooked at home?: A week ago. I reconciled with the kitchen and cooked a couple of hotdogs hahaha. Theyâre frozen and literally a child could make them, but egh, I wanna have my moment too.
When was the last time you had a sleepover?: Honestly canât remember. Start of the year maybe?
Where did you last go shopping for clothing?: Feliz. Itâs my favorite place to find new clothes so yeah, youâll always be hearing about Feliz. Where did you last go on a date to?: A study date at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and dinner at Yabu afterwards.
Where was the last wedding you went to?: 2007, my uncle and auntâs. I had plans to go to my cousin Joelleâs wedding in Texas this year, but I think they postponed it which highkey ended up working well for them because it wouldnât have happened under current circumstances anyway.
Where did you last park your car, other than home?: Gabieâs place.
Where did you last leave your keys?: On top of the dining room TV.
Where did your last kiss take place? By Gabieâs front door, I think.
Where did you last go for a walk to?: In front of the house and just a little farther, with my dog. Heâs getting older so he gets tired easily and canât go on the same walks we used to have, but I still make sure he gets his exercise.
Where did you last take a vacation to?: We had a weekend trip to Tagaytay and Cavite but honestly it felt like a quick getaway more than anything else. The last trip that felt like a vacation was when we went to Bicol.
Where did you last go to celebrate your own birthday?: I celebrated it at home.
Where was the last place you had dinner at?: Just at home, again.
Where did you last go to exercise?: I donât exercise. < Ha, samesies.

Where does the last person you hung out with live?: Upper part of the city.
Where did you last visit for the first time?: Uhhhh I think it was the salon I went to to get my hair done.
Where did you last take a photo?: On the floor of the dining area, to take selfies with my dog.

Interview: Max Minghella, Who Plays Nick in The Handmaidâs Tale, is the Enigmatic Brit in LA About to Make His Directorial Debut
(link to article â PAYWALLED â full text below)
Astro is an obscure diner in Silver Lake, Los Angelesâs hipster area. When it comes to trendy nooks in Silver Lake, there are options beyond this, but Astro is one of Max Minghellaâs haunts. Heâs sipping on a cup of tea in a booth, blending into the background. He wears cord trousers and trainers. The cords are his version of dressing to impress. At 33, the actor and director is taking heed of friendsâ advice that he needs to âgrow up. I literally donât have any trousers,â he says, chuckling. âI only had sweatpants until a week ago. My clothing looks like it was made for a 12-year-old. Too many people have said something to me.â
Minghella is dashing â the type of guy who could maybe get away with wearing a uniform of tracksuits and a flannel shirt for decades beyond his youth. He has a refined English accent but with a transatlantic twang. Born in Hampstead, north London, he moved to LA when he was 17, to act, and has lived between the two countries ever since. You may know him from The Social Network (2010) and The Ides of March (2011), but his star has risen recently due to his role as Nick Blaine in The Handmaidâs Tale, currently on its third series. He is also celebrating his directorial debut: Teen Spirit is a Cinderella story, starring Elle Fanning as Violet, a Polish immigrant girl-next-door living in a small British town and seeking to become a pop star. It has been a labour of love for Minghella, and it crept increasingly closer to his heart as the process unfolded. âI wrote the first draft 10 years ago,â he says.
At first, the script was an excuse to indulge Minghellaâs guilty pleasures: Swedish pop star Robyn and sports shows and movies such as Friday Night Lights and The Karate Kid. âIt was masturbatory,â he laughs. The inspiration came with Robynâs album Body Talk and its lead anthem, Dancing on My Own. The first scene he wrote was Violet performing the hit song in a TV talent contest akin to The X Factor. âIt was also originally a foreign-language film,â he says. âBut I thought the combination of subtitles and expensive pop music made it a silly endeavour. The script was a shambles,â he adds. The actor Jamie Bell, Minghellaâs best friend, helped to turn it into a real script. âWeâre yin and yang,â says Minghella. âEveryone I work with is incredibly hard on me. Iâm addicted to that. By the time we got to shooting, every comma had been argued over.â
Minghella is tricky company. He can be curt, offering vague answers, professing to being âvery privateâ, or simply responding with a âsureâ or a shrug. It doesnât surprise me that the story of how he and Bell became friends begins with them as enemies. âWe met really young and had a tempestuous initial meeting, where heâd heard that Iâd been saying things about him behind his back, which was untrue,â he recalls. âI heard that he was saying things about me, so we were very wary of one another.â Years later, in 2005, Bell emailed Minghella and they went to dinner. âWe fell in love instantly. Most of my closest friendships have been spawned in similar âŚâ a pause. âIâm very wary of people,â he says finally.
Growing up, Minghella says he was obnoxious. âI loved school socially and still miss it,â he says. âBut I was not an academic student. I did badly and was in a lot of trouble.â He recently bumped into an old history teacher on the Tube. âHe said, âWe just didnât know what to do with you,ââ Minghella laughs. His parents were both hard-working â his mother, Carolyn, came to England from Hong Kong when she was 18 to be a dancer, and his father, Anthony, the writer and Oscar-winning director of The English Patient, had an Italian immigrant father. Minghellaâs older sister, Hannah, 40, is the head of TriStar Pictures.
Dropping out of school a year early, Minghella headed to LA with no A-levels, landed some roles, then, guiltily trying to appease his parents, applied to university. He was accepted to only one, Columbia, to study history â he âcharmed his way inâ.
Anthony died of a haemorrhage in 2008, when he was 54 and Minghella was 23, and he carries with him his dadâs life mantra. âMy father would always say, âWhen nine Russians tell you that youâre drunk, you should lie down.ââ
Teen Spirit is set â and was filmed â on the Isle of Wight, where Anthony was born and raised. Minghella gets defensive when I ask whether Anthonyâs legacy intimidated him as a film-maker. âI donât grapple with it,â he replies. âA lot of people in my family work in film â my sister runs a studio, my uncle [Dominic Minghella] is a successful producer. The reason for it taking so long is for no good reason except my twenties were very wasteful. I didnât utilise them in the right way. Iâve made a lot of things I probably should have released in some shape or form, but Iâve always been a private person. The amount of hours I spend acting? Very few. Directing for me was a relief.â
That said, he loves working on The Handmaidâs Tale â and with its lead, Elisabeth Moss. âSheâs just a joy,â he says. âA very easy, chill person. I feel privileged.â The show has been universally lauded, winning 11 Emmys and two Golden Globes. Nick is someone of initial suspicion, who winds up being a saviour and love interest to Mossâs June/Offred. Given the current threat against abortion rights in America, I wonder if Minghella is excited to be exploring that on camera. He shakes his head. âNone of it was intentional,â he says. He does admit to relief that âitâs on the right side of the conversationâ, but he feels âquite antitheticalâ about using his platform to talk social change. âActivism in film-making is not interesting to me. I donât like to be told what to think. I like to interpret.â
Teen Spiritâs Violet was inspired by his mother. âShe didnât speak a word of English when she moved to Britain,â he says. âThereâs a huge amount of her in Violet. Thereâs a lot of my sister in Violet.â Initially, Minghella was looking for a Polish actress, but rewrote the part when Fanning expressed interest in being in the film. âI was her biggest fan. And then we sat down, had lunch and [it] became clear that she was probably the only person who could play the part. A lot of her real life is absorbed into the character.â Like what? He squirms. âI donât know if I want to talk about that. Thereâs something funny about film sets. The amount of confession that happens ⌠It feels out of turn.â
Reportedly Minghella and Fanning, 21 â 12 years his junior â are in a relationship. They were spotted holding hands last July in Florence and attended this yearâs Met Gala together. They gush over each other in interviews, but neither has confirmed a relationship in as many words. To confuse things further, Minghella used to date the actress Kate Mara, who is now married to his best mate, Bell. I ask him whether it was special to work with someone in a creative capacity that he was romantically involved in, referring to Fanning. He laughs. âI donât wanna answer that question.â
We manage to find some common ground as Brits in LA with a shared nostalgia for the things we miss back home. When he feels homesick, he listens to BBC Radio 1 and he says that nothing makes him happier than a Branston pickle sandwich. He spent some time living in New York in the early 2000s, but wouldnât move back there. âI love New York, but I donât know anyone there, so I always end up feeling lonely and strange,â he admits. As our interview finishes, I wonder if Minghella considers himself more British or American, as clearly his connections to both are so strong. âIâm not sure Iâd call LA home per se,â he says. âBut it is comforting. When I drive by the 7-Eleven on Silver Lake Boulevard from the airport, itâs the one place in the world that feels settled.â

"A Celebration in Animation: The 100 Greatest Cartoon Characters in Television History" by Marty Gitlin and Joe Wos
Synopsis: Few morose thoughts permeate the brain when Yosemite Sam calls Bugs Bunny a "long-eared galoot"or a frustrated Homer Simpson blurts out his famous catchphrase "D'oh!". A Celebration in Animation explores the best-of-the-best cartoon characters from the 1920s to the twenty-first century. Casting a wide net, it includes characters both serious and humorous and ranging from silly to malevolent. But all the greats gracing this book are sure to trigger nostalgic memories of care-free Saturday mornings or after-school hours with family and friends in front of the TV set.Â
Published: 2018 (Lyons Press) Genre:Â Non-fiction, pop culture, ranked list Rating: 3.5 out of 5
WARNING: There are some spoilers in this review (they don't mention the ranking of the shows I'll mention, just the shows themselves). The cover of the book already spoils things in this regard, but just in case you want to read this yourselves, you may want to skip reading this review until then! :D
Reader Review: Okay, so at this point, I'm literally going to start making a new tag/sub-series of reviews called "judging a book by its cover", because yet again, that's what I did. Heck, I'll even go back to my old reviews and tag them as such I went back to my old reviews and tagged them as such. Working at a library is a blessing and a curse in this regard... Anyway, my allure to this book's cover came from Teen Titans' Beast Boy being smack-dab on it. And with my undying love for the original Teen Titans series, I was instantly curious as to what ranking he'd been awarded (THAT, I will spoil; it'll be in the tags). And I've always had a love of both cartoon history and countdown lists, so this book was right up my alley anyway.Â
Now, as much as the internet likes to make fun of WatchMojo on Youtube ("Top Ten Anime Betrayals" memes, anyone?), you have to admit that you yourself have watched at least one of their countdown lists, or a countdown list from someone else (ScreenRant, Looper, etc). There's something inherently interesting about putting things, specifically things we see in pop culture, in a ranked order, and the possibilities of the subjects of these lists are limitless so there's something for everyone. That being said, it drives me crazy when people get so mad or defensive about the entry order of a top 10/ top whatever number list, whether it's "How could THIS be #1???", "How could this NOT be #1???", "What about ___???", you get it. So going into reading this list of the top 100 cartoon characters in all of cartoon history, you really have to understand that these are the, albeit well-thought-out and industry-knowledgeable, OPINIONS of two people. This is not the Mayan calendar, the end-all be-all of lists. If anything, it prompts a dialogue, inviting you to hop on discussion train and talk about cartoons yourself.Â
Both Marty Gitlin, a pop culture author, and Joe Wos, a cartoon illustrator, have both the professional and personal insight of the vast history of cartoons. What is very apparent, though, is that these two have come together for more of their personal love of cartoons than anything else. This didn't bother me personally, because no matter how unbiased a ranking list claims to be, there's always a little bit of bias. The two authors try to base their rankings in fact more than personal preference, and for the most part they do stay unbiased, in both obvious and non-obvious ways (for example: there is one Disney character that ranks decently higher on the list than another Disney character, which was backed by reasonings both personal and professional by the authors, since the initial reaction from anyone would probably be "...Wait, really?"). Their choices do a great job in ranging from the dawn of cartoon history with "Crusader Rabbit" and "Astro Boy" to much more recent cartoons like Archer from "Archer", Tina from "Bob's Burgers" and Korra from "The Legend of Korra", all with the same logic applied to each for why they deserved to be recognized in this book, and not necessarily why they deserve spot number whatever (although they do emphasize the rankings DO matter, but it didn't really matter a whole lot outside of the top 20). I genuinely enjoyed learning about cartoons I wasn't too familiar with, getting little blurbs and fun facts out of it, and just generally getting into the heads of Gitlin and Wos. It's clear they did their research and really applied a lot of thought to this list. After all, it's hard with ALL the cartoons characters that have existed since the early 1900s to simply pick 100. Some liberties are taken for duos, like Sylvester and Tweety and Cosmo and Wanda, but it makes sense because some exist as foils of the other to play off of each other, and their partnership is what made them stand out individually in the first place. In that regard, it's more like a top 125-ish list, but again, the authors take care in making the reasonings make sense. Plus there's a foreword from SpongeBob voice and overall voice-acting marvel Tom Kenny, which is a nice treat that whets our appetite for what this book will unveil.
That being said, this book is very much a first draft that should have had some more time to be edited before release. It's enough sometimes to be overlooked; in the beginning of each new ranking, there's a bio for each character (Created by:____ Debuted in: ___ Voiced by: ____), but rather than a new blurb starting on a new line, there are sometimes two blurbs that exist on the same line. Again, not the worst thing ever. But then there are some that are just impossible to let go; there's literally a ranking (within the ranking) of Pinky and the Brain's most ridiculous "Take over the world" schemes, and there's randomly a line about Racer X of "Speed Racer" fame that is clearly not supposed to be in this ranking, let alone in this ranking's ranking. Consistency is also an issue. For a book about cartoons, there's a big lack of them in this book. Every ranked character, I assumed, would have its own picture to visually show the reader who the character is in a "show, don't tell" kind of way, but that was very much not the case for a large amount of characters. The most logical answer to this could've been that there were copyright issues where the authors couldn't obtain permission to use their images, but several Disney characters appear visually in the book, despite Disney being notoriously stingy about sharing their characters in mediums they don't helm themselves. And where we get a cartoon character visually for #1-45, we don't get any pictures at all for a straight 15 rankings afterwards. For a ranked list about a visual medium, I would've loved to have seen who they were talking about, instead of Google image searching who certain characters were (like I had no idea who Beany and Cecil were before this book, and had to provide my own visual representation). It's just an odd choice for a cartoon book to exclude... cartoons. Though what's more odd are some images they did include. There are a couple of weird choices of photos, like the French TV poster for "Pokemon" that says "Le Film" under a screenshot of Pikachu, and the tiniest picture ever of "Crusader Mouse" obscured by the title sequence. Again, Googling these characters myself showed me better results than the book did.Â
Finally and most importantly, character information is straight-up wrong. I know I said they do their research-- and they do-- and the authors are obviously not expected to know everything about every character offhand, but where they get tiny details and industry notes spot-on, they get the absolute simplest character information so unusually incorrect. There are two notable examples in my copy of the book. The first one is in Fat Albert's entry, where it states "Cosby Kid Tito is killed by a stray bullet intended for his older brother, who had joined a gang" (Uh... Fat Albert spoilers?). But it's actually Tito's younger brother Fernando who is shot and killed because the older brother who joins a gang is "Cosby Kid Tito". I know the piece is about Fat Albert the character and not Tito, but why bring this up if you don't even use the correct character to mention how progressive the show was to justify Fat Albert's place on the list? The second one is for the Powerpuff Girls regarding Blossom's physical description. It reads: "Blossom boasted light brown hair with a large blow and featured a short cape tied behind her pink dress and black belt." UMMMMMMM. I was so absolutely confused by this one line I had to look up various shots of her character model in case I somehow forgot that she had a cape, and to clarify, she absolutely does not have a cape (unless for specific episodes where's she dressing up outside of her normal attire). Did the authors think her hair was a cape? Did they mistake one episode where she wore a cape for the entirety of the series where she doesn't wear one? NO CAPES (CHECK OUT INCREDIBLES 2 IN THEATRES JUNE 15TH). Also... light brown hair? What adds insult to injury, besides the well-established fact that she has RED hair, is that this character description is written RIGHT NEXT TO A PICTURE OF THE POWERPUFF GIRLS TO PROVE THAT THAT IS NOT TRUE. Honestly, I'll give leniency where it's due for taking on the task of ranking and going in-depth on the origins and noteworthy points of a character, but no one prompted them to make this list. If you're going to talk in-depth about a character, fact-checking is your best friend. This is simple research, or simple picture-looking.
Overall, it's a fun book that helps you brush up on your cartoon history and send you into a state of nostalgia. I do wish there were more than the ten or so characters from Japan, Canada or the UK that appear on this list, but again, it's a book written in America that tends to look at the influence of said cartoons in American history, and asking someone to examine every cartoon character in the WORLD is a daunting, if not impossible task. I do also disagree with the fact that the list starts with #1 and descends from there. I find it more fun to build up to that #1 spot, because who really wants to read who #100 is when you know who #1 is already? I actually read this book backwards because of this, and found it much more satisfying to see the #1 spot by the "end". But I don't think there will be any dispute with who the top 30 or so cartoons are, but even if there are, that's the fun of ranked lists like this: if you disagree, just make your own list! It's all in good cartoon fun.

2018
Another year has passed. Thatâs another three hundred sixty-five and one fourth days, eight thousand six hundred seventy hours, five hundred twenty-five thousand and six hundred minutes, and thirty-one million plus seconds. That was a lot of numbers. I donât know about you, but this year has been a ride!! I really went out of my comfort zone, I have met amazing people, made more friends, experienced a few firsts, released a pint of tears and at last, made a decision that I think would change my life forever.
Let me break it down. January was good. I started the year with cough and colds, alone in my room taking videos of myself and the fireworks that can be clearly seen right on my window pane. This was also the month ~ I think~ when I made up my mind that I really want to pursue medicine. This was the month when I fell in love with all the hospital works. That I had envisioned all the times that Iâve been in a hospital, trying to remember the smell of alcohol drenched cotton balls; the hallways, the rush in the emergency room, everything. I never knew I loved those things until last 2016, when I started watching this surgical TV show that I am now obsessed with.
February was okay. Like the usual, I hated my birthday. Itâs eerie that I feel like there really is something in my birthday that I donât quite feel like itâs worth celebrating for. I am not worthy of their time, money and efforts. There were also lots of questions that roamed my mind. To whether tell my parents about my plans or not; is medicine really for me; will they support me with my decision; and WILL I SURVIVE IF EVER I GOT INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL. There were days that I am adamant about my decision, that I tell myself ~ Of course I can do it!! And there were also weeks where I get discouraged, and the fear of making bad decisions really gripped my body tight.
March, hmm. I couldnât quite remember the events that had happened this month. But I am pretty sure this was the month that I went full on crazy about someone in our college. I really want to know that personâs name, but I had to go incognito because everything will be messed up if that person knew.
April. CSSP NIGHT!!! LIT LIT LIT LIT!!! This was one of the happiest night of my life. Played bingo for the first time, got to see my crush perform on stage for the first time, AND ACTUALLY KNOWING THY NAME!!! Added on facebook, then got accepted the next day. O diba. I donât remember that much events in this month. I am pretty sure I was still in the phase of constant dilemma about the decision I made for my future.
May. The semester is almost over!! But say no more, I still had an internship over the summer.
June. INTERNSHIP WOOOOH!! Lit lit lit rin. Pero hindi capital letters kasi muntik na ko magkaroon ng mental breakdown. Why? Internship. I never had a hardtime naman looking for a company to train to unlike some of my classmates pero the ~pressure? Thatâs what held me back talaga. I think? Culture shock siguro is the best term to describe what I felt. Ano ba. I was just a normal student tapos I get to be an intern in a huge BPO company tapos I had to talk to potential employees pa. IN PURE ENGLISH!! Syempre na shookt ako. Tapos I got assigned in a station right next to our boss pa!! Imagine the pressure. But she was really nice. Sheâs funny, approachable and all. Pero still nu, I couldnât help but get intimidated by her presence. I lost track din on how many times I got scolded for doing the call outs wrong. I got the feeling that my supervisor has this impulse deep down to strangle me with the cord of the telephone I use. But in all, I still got to finish it. I finished it without even noticing I was almost done. Days passed by like hours. Literal. 10 hours a day ba naman ang oras na nababawas sa 240 hours ko eh. But seriously, I didnât even notice that I was almost done with it. I met amazing people there, I got to talk with real people looking for jobs, interact with people older and far superior than me, which was my greatest fear!! Talk about getting out of your comfort zone huh.
July. This was the month when I finished my internship. Actually, it wasnât easy coming back to your old shit. I missed waking up way early to catch the 6:30 am UV so I would arrive at work at exactly 7:45. Separation anxiety? No. I just miss the ambiance. The faces of the people that I get to interact with daily, the cold work room that would chill you right to your bones, and yung pag kain ko ng Richeese every after lunch. WOOH!
August. Back to bizz. FIRST SEM. 4TH YEAR. IâM OFFICIALLY A GRADUATING STUDENT!!! Whatâs with the enthusiasm? Boy doesnât even know whatâs about to come at him. If thereâs this saying na life throws you lemons, and you would just make lemonades out of it, oh boy. Life threw me pineapples, sea urchins, a school bus and a nuclear bomb. Which I donât know how to deal with, cause HOW DO YOU EVEN COOK A SEA URCHIN? August was one of the months of this year that made me cry. Not even because of a heartbreak, nor a typical teenager shortcoming, but because of the terrorizing spirit that lies within the subject that is research I. Starting from the day that our professor had assigned us to do an individual research proposal, all of us knew that it will be the beginning of the tormenting last first semester in our college lives.
September. Wake me up when September ends. Cause there was no relevant thing that I could remember happened this month. Again, I am pretty sure that I was still rehearsing the words that I would tell my parents about my plans after graduation. Still uncertain on whatâs gonna come next.
October. We were assigned to our respective thesis groups. This was also the month that we submitted the first draft of our real thesis proposal. Mind you, we almost got rejected. Title lang tiningnan nung prof naming bes. This was when the inside joke âbibili na naming ng condensed milk si prof para di na sya ma-bother sa proposal naming evaporadaâ. Beh. This was my busiest month this year. Revisions here and there, almost everyday we were in school since we refused to have another overnight cause we accomplish nothing when we are in an air-conditioned room. The impetus of the warm and cozy bed was really inviting and irresistible. So ayun, we were in the school almost everyday.
November. Thesis proposal defense!!! Holy shit. We had an overnight to rehearse everything we have to say the day before the defense. I was so nervous, but my group mates were just chilling. Literally. Kasi nga ang lamig sa kwarto. I donât know but I have this thing that I always overcomplicate things. Things that can be handled by a five-year old child I tend to make it seem like the apocalypse is about to happen. I have always had an anxiety in speaking in front of the class, so imagine my nervousness about this one cause I have to present a proposal in front of three intimidating research gods. And then the day of the defense came, WE PASSED!! I couldnât forget the awkward shriek I did when the assigned panel to our group delivered the good (?) news to us, in his timid, kinda shy low voice. All the stress, the fear, the anxiety I have that day flew away as he uttered the words âEheh, uhm. Pumasa kayoâŚ. Pero with major revisionsâ. Boy I didnât even hear everything the panel said after those words. Buti na lang our mentor recorded everything, cause if not, mangangapa kami and mamatay sa kakaalala kung ano ano yung mga suggestions na binigay nila.
December. Ahhh. The final month of the year!! Was there something relevant that happened this month? YES!!! LIT LIT LIT LIT ULIT!! Our section had THE most extreme, wildest, and craziest after-defense slash victory party slash walwal party ever!!! What a wonderful way to welcome the last month of twenty seventeen! I also met a new friend, a twitter friend from our college. Haha. Ooh. I also decided to tell my parents about my plans. Imagine my fear, anxiety, fear of rejection, lahat na pota!! Aaaaand. It didnât go well. They did not approve. But anyway, I still want to prove myself that I got what it takes to be a good physician, so I have decided that even though I am not certain that I will go to med school right after graduation, I would still review for the NMAT and take it this coming March or April. Diba. Because, sabi nga sa bible, for the Lord has plans for all of us. Plans that will prosper us and not to harm us, plans that will give us hope and future. Honestly those are the words that give me hope. That I could still be something I want to be despite the fear, the people that hold me back, and the discouragement I get from my own environment. I can do it naman diba?
I think the word that encapsulates the events that took place this year is uncertainty. For me at least. It is what I feared the most. Afraid of what will happen next. Maybe it is the utmost reason why I missed a lot of chances to â prove myself, to show off what I got in my jacket pocket, what I can offer, and to improve the things here I am good at.Â
I have had a lot of shortcomings this year. The tears that I let out were way fewer than last year, but the tears from this year came from a deeper source. Maybe because I already decided what I want to do until I die, but the people around tell me otherwise. I felt like my dream was invalidated. Trashed. Thrown away. Just because the dream is a 24-karat gold and I only have a couple of gravel and sand. And it cuts even deeper and the wounds wonât heal in an instant.
Iâm a fond believer of that famous saying thatâs about crossing a bridge when you arrived there, but what if there are even no roads, or pathways or pavements that will lead you to that bridge? You havenât even reached the bridge yet, but you have already been stopped because the enforcers told you the roads are closed. I could handle everything life throws at me. I made a ridiculous stewed sea urchin, I put the pineapples on my pizza, I defused the nuclear bomb and used it as a decoration in my room, kasi nga I cross the bridge when I get there. I deal with whatâs in front of me. Pero how could you deal with something, if along the way, the people around you have already poked a hole in your tires? That even though they believe in you, unconsciously they are telling you that ~no, you wonât do it cause we wonât allow you. It will just fuel your fear kasi you will never know whatâs on the other side. You cannot cross the bridge because you wonât even get there. The fear of uncertainty will eat you alive, chew you and spit you out to where you started. And I donât want to be that person who grieves, and regrets his life decisions after a couple of years because he patterned it out from what the people around him pressured him to do. I want to dictate my future, but there are just inevitable circumstances that make it hard to do so, and it makes me real sad. I thought this year will be different. I had high hopes with it, but it just let me down. They let me down.
But I will still continue striving. This time, I will have enough courage, and bravery to stand up for the choices I make. I will never let any opportunity slip through my hands like water. I will face this year in my warrior suit, equipped with the disappointments, discouragements, fears, heartbreaks, anxieties, regrets, and problems the past year had thrown at me, that I have successfully overcome.
I can already feel that this year will be tiring, productive, troublesome, hard, insane, bountiful, delightful, pleasing, satisfying, wild, I can list a couple more adjectives but in all, I will sum it up with just a word stressful. But hey, being stressed means that you are actually doing something. I expect a lot of disappointments and heartbreaks to come this year, but deep down, a spark of hope still shines. I have the right to be a pessimist, cause hello, 2017??? But it does not mean I will be for the rest of the year.
Iâm on my *crossed fingers* final year in college, so that means I will be graduating this year. That alone is one hell of an event to look forward to. Alongside that, my medical journey will also be put on trial this year đ¤Ł. My fate to becoming a medical doctor will be decided hopefully before I graduate from college. But again in crossed fingers, I really hope that whoever is to decide, I want the decision to be in my favor cause not only it will trace my future, it will also reveal how tough, matured, brave and steadfast I have become. These are just two of what I think be the highlights of this year. Hereâs to a handful more of new experiences!! Cheers. đĽ
May 2018 be my year.
Seriously. Cause 2018 is Year of the Dog, and Iâm a big big huge enormous fan of dogs. so can this year be my year?

July 2020 Calendar For Holiday & Work Schedule
July is the second month of summer and is known for its warm air. The best movement in July is to chill by a plunge in the sea or pool, swing in a lounger and look at get-togethers on a pre-summer night.
July is the most sultry month of the Northern Hemisphere and, regardless of what may be standard, it is seen as the coldest month in the Southern Hemisphere. July is the thing that maybe stood apart from January of the Northern side of the equator in the Southern side of the equator.
The second half of the year starts with July. In various workplaces, the assessments made around the beginning of the year are sketched out and the course is broke down. July is in like the way the comprehensive length of inquiring about decisions taken for the new year. You may even need to do a little cure. Since you may be gone in a general sense speedier, or more conceded than you orchestrated.
July is close to the immense piece of various festivals and there are various inspirations to experience this month flooding with fun. Because of each and every outside activity, coastline parties, weddings, national events and a wide degree of good occasions in July, you can be to some degree hard to contribute noteworthiness with each event.
HISTORY OF JULY
July was from the beginning of the great importance of Quintilis in the Roman timetable. It was the "fifth" month of the year until January and February were joined into the timetable in 450 BC. It got its entrancing name from the Latin word for fifth. Later the name was changed to Julius to pay tribute to Julius Caesar who was considered on July 12.
July is the standard time length known as "fence month," the shut season for deer in England. The satisfaction of England's High Court of Justice Trinity Term occurs on 31 July. July is in like the way the time wherein the races happen for the Japanese House of Councilors, held at standard among times and displacing half of its seats. In Ancient Rome, the festival of Poplifugia was adulated on 5 July, and Ludi Apollinaris was held tight 13 July and for a couple of days a brief range later. Everything considered, these dates don't identify with the progressed Gregorian timetable.
The name of the seventh month of the year â July â was given by the Roman Senate in 46 B.C. out of thankfulness for ruler Julius Caesar.
July is the most blasting month in the Northern Hemisphere all around. It takes after January in the Southern Hemisphere.
A touch of the time the sweltering, wide stretches of July are known as the "dog extended lengths of summer".
There are various countries which have their Independence Day during the hour of July. These set the United States, Belarus, Venezuela, Argentina, Belgium, the Bahamas, and the Maldives. The national days for France and Canada occur in July too.
It is a section of the time called the Hay month considering the manner in which that the grass dries out by excellence of a nonappearance of a tempest and can be made into a feed.
July's birthstone, the ruby, is reliably associated with fulfillment, love, centrality, and steadfast quality.
The regular develop of the great importance of July is the water lily, symbolizing joy, capriciousness, and sweetness.
No month completes on a general day of the week as July close to on the off chance that it is a ricochet year when January achieves everything considered.
More US presidents (seven) have passed on in July than in some other month.
The outdated British called July "Heymonth" or "Maedmonth" recommending haymaking and dales blooming.
JULY HOLIDAYS IN THE UNITED STATES
Opportunity Day (July fourth)
Opportunity Day 2020, generally called Fourth of July, is an association event observed yearly on July fourth. It is the acknowledgment of the dispersing of the solicitation of the self-rule of the United States of America from Great Britain in 1776.
On April 19, 1775, during the Battles of Lexington and Concord (Mass.), the fundamental shots were released among pioneers and British troopers, starting the American Revolution. After these first military conflicts, the strain among Britain and her American pioneers continued mounting. By then, on July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress controlled for self-rule from Britain.
Following two days, on July 4, the Congress authenticated the last draft of the Declaration of Independence, which had been made by Thomas Jefferson and changed by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. On July 8, the basic open researching of the Declaration happened at the Pennsylvania State House (genuinely Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Later that for all intents and purposes indistinguishable day, various readings occurred in Trenton, New Jersey, and Easton, Pennsylvania.
In the United States, Independence Day is an association event everything thought about celebrated with walks, shows, sparklers and picnics, and fire burns. Various people show the American standard outside their homes or structures. If Independence Day falls on seven days' end, by then the last Friday or following Monday will be an event. As this is a Federal event, not only will schools and libraries be closed. Most government and state working circumstances will correspondingly be closed and there will be no mail send on Independence Day.
In general Day of Friendship
The International Day of Friendship is a United Nations (UN) day that supports the activity that coordinated effort plays in actuating congeniality in various social solicitations. Before the 30th of July was recently nitty-gritty as the International Day of Friendship by the General Assembly of United Nations in 2011, the central thought for a day of the association began from Hallmark cards during the 1930s, various years back. It was from the beginning celebrated on second August, the day was, as they say, seen incredulously by general society as a business work out, offers of family relationship day cards didn't take off in Europe and by the mid-1940's the day had ended up being unsafe in the USA. The probability of a day to regard family connections was, in any case, understood by different countries in Asia where it remained a standard custom to hold a day for complimenting affiliations and the exchanging of headways between buddies.
The basic World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade, a general crucial affiliation that fights to connect with a culture of the comprehension through affiliation.
Because of the creation pervasiveness of electronic life all through the world, there has been a huge development in watching World Friendship Day and International Day of Friendship online similarly as in system practices in close to structures arranged for get-together ones of different establishments.
If you are an "all around sorted out" person who reliably says interest is fundamental, attempt to experience this day with your mates (by structure new memories)! You ought to just check this day on your July 2020 calendar printable!

Centre right: Esther James - NINJA After leading the Red Roses to Six Nations victory in March, James began work â alongside her girlfriend, Jane Adams â on setting up a charitable foundation to encourage LGBT+ youngsters to pursue their sporting dreams. Officially set to launch in June this year, Off The Pridelines will offer scholarships, help connect youngsters with teams, and run various support services, as well as a training and accreditation scheme for teams and venues to become more supportive. âA lot of gay and trans kids have a lot of fear tied up with school PE lessons, changing rooms, and sports. Many don't know where they can safely train or play,â James states in the foundation's pre-launch press pack. âOff The Pridelines aims to fix that and help them become more confident and active without having to hide who they are.â
Bottom left: Sergeant Shadwell - BELL As well as forming an unlikely duo with Marjorie Potts â the two have been spotted together in tea shops, at antiques fairs, and even admiring the properties in the window of an estate agent's â Shadwell has been making frequent trips to the town of Little Dyvyn, where work on the restoration of Godleigh Manor has recently been allowed to begin. âLucy [Godleigh, the owner] is really keen to keep the Wytchfynder Army informed and involved in the process, and I think it's really interesting to get to see inside the walls of the place,â Shadwell told viewers in a recent YouTube video, âso I reckon I'll pop in every so often, have a look around and report anything interesting I find out. For example, that rattling noise from the first video? Turns out there are wooden window shutters inside a hollow wall, and a draft was blowing through them. Something to keep in mind in future 'haunting' cases.â
Bottom Right:
Agnes Nutter - BONFIRE âSome stories wait for no-one,â as Nutter tweeted a couple of weeks ago, and that certainly seems to have been true of her latest book. Just a month after she first mentioned that she'd begun writing a new novel, Nutter has already reported that the first draft is almost finished, and she appears to be planning for a September release date. âI'm going to dedicate this one to my new friend Marjorie,â she told Twitter, âshe's been a font of fascinating anecdotes and very generous in allowing me to draw inspiration from them.â
Page 9
Top left: Pat Maputi - SQUID P-White's Chalkdust tour is in full swing, with packed crowds selling out arenas across the UK and Europe. Tickets are currently on sale for the American stretch of the tour, which should keep Pat busy until next spring. After that, Maputi plans to âsleep for about a month and then start writing a new albumâ, they told the Capital Herald â although they will be making time to attend the Blue Peter garden party. For now, though, it's life on the road for Maputi as they wrap up this leg of the tour.
Top centre: Aziraphale Fell - GOOSE Anthony Crowley - SNAKE The Amazing Mr. Fell's magic show has been sold out for three solid months, ever since his appearance on The Masked Singer, and even adding extra shows on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons doesn't seem to have entirely sated the public's demand. Fell himself seems to be spending most of his time off in the company of Anthony Crowley, predominantly in various London restaurant establishments. Most recently, the two were spotted enjoying a late lunch at the Ritz to celebrate the announcement that Crowley has been cast as Rafferty in the new TV adaptation of Sir Thomas Parsett's The Grasswater Affair. âYeah, thrilled to get another go at Grasswater,â Crowley told the Capital Herald, âand with the support of Noel [Garmin, showrunner] and all the people who've helped me reach the point where this is possible.â Asked about the nature of his friendship with Fell, Crowley seemed lost for words, but Fell stepped in with a brief statement. âI'm afraid it's quite ineffable. And, if you don't mind, I believe those are our desserts.â So it seems The Masked Singer's contestants still have some mysteries for us!
Bottom left: Marjorie Potts - TEAPOT Madame Tracy has been a very busy woman â as well as returning to TV with her show Drawing Back the Veil on Saturday nights, she's also still writing for the New Aquarian and overseeing her increasingly popular Psychic Hotline. But despite all this, she's also found time to be seen at the forefront of a couple of protests, notably against proposed changes to the Freedom Pass system, alongside fellow Masked Singer contestants Agnes Nutter and Sergeant Shadwell. The latter has also been seen making frequent calls to Potts' Camden address â but she's tight-lipped on the subject. âI don't kiss and tell, dear,â she told our reporter â and perhaps you can draw your own conclusions from that.
Bottom centre: Lawrence Richmond - PONY Last week's General Election - the third in four years - saw Richmond lose the Toffley South seat he'd occupied since 2005. In a speech to his supporters immediately after the result was declared, he announced his intention to take a brief break from politics in order to spend more time with his family, and is currently holidaying with wife Victoria and son Horace in the South of France.
Right-hand column: AND THE REST... Jeremy Wensleydale While Wensleydale is currently in rehearsals for a production of Turandot at Glyndebourne this summer, he has also found time to announce that he will be spending the autumn recording an album of some of his favourite operatic and choral numbers, along with a number of famous voices. This will be Wensleydale's first full album since 2018, and is already eagerly anticipated by his many fans. Brian Thames Thames is now coming to the end of his latest tour, The British Inquisition, and has recently found time to appear on several comedy panel shows and chat shows. He's then scheduled to run an online comedy masterclass, which he'll be recording immediately after his tour ends. âI had a teacher at school who told me I had a real talent for helping people remember things. I think usually it was just because they remembered the jokes. So I could hardly pass up this opportunity - this one's for you, Miss Tyler.â Pepper Moonchild Moonchild is currently filling in as a presenter on The One Show, and recently announced that she hopes to publish a detective novel next year. âI've been getting loads of advice from my literary hero, Agnes Nutter â it's something I've always wanted to do, but my agent at the time advised against diversifying too much. My new agent has been nothing but supportive - they even put me in touch with a good literary agent, so now all I have to do is write the best book I can and see how it goes!â Adam Young and Warlock Dowling After years of rumours and speculation about their relationship, presenters Adam Young and Warlock Dowling eloped to tie the knot in New York last weekend.âWe didn't tell anyone we were getting married,â Dowling said, after breaking the news on Pam and Sam AM earlier this week. âOur families were a bit surprised! But we just wanted it to be really low key, a day just for us.â âYeah, some glares were exchanged when people realised they'd missed out on a wedding,â Young confirmed. âBut we're going to plan a big party soon! Besides, we didn't do anything in the Big Apple that wasn't worth the trouble we got in for doing it.â

Hello there, Friends and Stuff! Iâm excited to enter a new month and bring you some new and brilliant updates!
Dark Divinations â A Victorian Horror Anthology
First, Dark Divinations debuted on May 1st. You can order it now in paperback on Amazon. If you want to get the party pack, you can still get that here! Later this month, Iâll be posting updates about some special videos going up on Facebook⌠youâll want to get in on that for sure!
Open Novella Contest
Whaaaat!? I made it through Round 2 of the contest? I couldnât believe it. My novella, a 25,000-word story about a gay WWII pilot who crashes and washes up on an island reminiscent of Danteâs Inferno, actually had enough score to make it through. You can find the novella here if youâre interested.
Do I think it will win? Hell no. Itâs the most artsy-fartsy thing Iâve written in my entire life, and it seems like Wattpad is more interested in YA-focused romantic fantasies or something a bit more⌠commercial. But the fact Iâve made it through round 2 is really pleasing, because it means the storyâs well written enough to make it through despite sounding like it was written by a person totally not in Wattpadâs primary audience.
Changes on the Blog
Youâll notice a few (somewhat unfortunate) changes on the blog. Letâs start with the good and move our way to the bad!
Home Page Updates
My home page has been updated â now itâs easier to find the How-To articles by clicking on the Witty Nib Writing Club. Thereâs also a new blog-roll going where you can access recent posts more easily.
Expect New Graphics in June
Iâm preparing for a few big changes that will go up in June and will reflect some of the things associated with the Dark Divinations anthology. If you stick around and watch the video watch party on Facebook, you may be surprised to see an interesting face and hear a terrible voice! To go along with these revelations, my avatar and a few other pieces of the website will be changing.
Witty Nib Writing Club Changes
Sadly, the prompts and attempts at collaboration with the Club didnât quite turn out. Iâm ever grateful to Robbie Cheadle for her response to the research prompt, but I think among the corner of blogs I survey, thereâs a plentitude of prompts. As a result, the Witty Nib Writing Club will change from a monthly prompt and informative post to a monthly informative post alone. You can still join in the club using the comments, but I thought itâs time to retire the club. Maybe Iâll start something easier up in the future!
More Professional Foci
Something Iâve realized in the past few months â while Iâve not had a real job â is that blogging, sadly, doesnât further professional writing credentials. It does help me meet new people who I love to follow, obtain new info about upcoming releases, and fulfill a long-term audience goal, but it takes up so much time. So much. Iâve decided to reduce the time spent on my blog in order to attempt more short story submissions, perhaps consider doing a poetry submission, and finish my newest novel.
Sadly, Iâm probably not going to be reading as many blogs or be quite as responsive. Iâll give it my best shot, but thatâs all I can promise!
Iâll also be (at least temporarily) closed to beta reading requests, and any book review requests (while still open) will not be completed for quite some time.
Speaking of NovelsâŚ
Iâve got several novels up on the blog: American Chimera, If I Only Had No Heart, and Evolution of the Predator. You can click on each of these links to see their representative pages. However, these links arenât going to work forever. No â Iâm going to be taking my novels down, one at a time, starting at the end of the month with Evolution of the Predator. I was pretty torn when making this decision, but ultimately I think it needs to happen.
The reason for this decision is because theyâre second drafts, beta read only by my partner, and theyâre not representative of my best work. Because I seek to present a higher level of professionalism, Iâm taking the oldest work â Evolution of the Predator â down first because it represents that which was written at my least mature point. That will start at the end of this month, May 2020.
Itâs Not Too Late to Catch These Novels!
Nope! Until May 30th, all novels will be available for download. You should head to their pages and download the PDF files if you want to save them for later reading.
Evolution of the Predator
On May 23rd, 2020, Iâll have a reminder post telling about the imminent takedown of the novel. On May 30th, 2020, the downloadable PDF of Evolution of the Predator will be taken down from the Evolution of the Predator page. Starting on June 6th, I will take the post containing the first chapter down. Following that, one chapter will be taken down per week (as long as I donât forget â but Iâll handle it as soon as I can). Theyâll be removed in order from first chapter to last with the hopes that potential readers will be able to read one chapter per week without losing access (though I will probably email you chapters if you ask nicely). The page already lists the dates I plan to take down each chapter. The page and entire story will be gone on November 14th, 2020. All links to it on the site will be broken, though I will attempt to remove links by hand as I can.
If I Only Had No Heart
On July 18th, 2020, I will post a reminder that If I Only Had No Heart will be ending soon. On July 25th, 2020, the PDF will be removed from the If I Only Had No Heart page. On August 8th, the first chapter will be removed. One chapter will removed per week after, starting with the first chapter and ending with the last chapter. The page and entire story will be gone on November 14th, 2020. All links to it on the site will be broken, though I will attempt to remove links by hand as I can.
American Chimera
Donât worry about this baby for now! Iâm still posting this one serially, and she wonât be finished posting until December 2020. Itâs also a pretty good little book, just needs some editing. However, I will be taking it down sometime in 2021 (not yet planned fully), so catch it while you can!
What About You?
Do you have any cool new things going on in May? Any excellent accomplishments in April? Iâd love to hear about them to celebrate and/or commiserate with you! Cheers!

memories of 1977
1977 The first Apple Computer goes on sale. Quebec adopts French as the official language. Jimmy Carter is elected as the President of United States and the first oil flows through the Trans Alaskan Oil Pipeline. The precursor to the GPS system in use today is started by US Department of defense. Elvis Presley Dies from a heart attack aged 42.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ-k3oblIM8
British Public sector trade unions including Firefighters strike for wage increases over the 10% ceiling imposed by the British government. The first ever Quadraphonic concert in London by Pink Floyd. The first commercial flight Concord London to New York. NASA space shuttle makes its first test flight off the back of a jetliner. Voyager I and Voyager II are launched unmanned to explore the outer solar system.
When Britainâs fire crews walked out on national strike, members of the public were advised to take matters into their own hands. Although the armed services, with their so-called "Green Goddess" fire engines, were drafted in, they were seen by many as a last line of defence.
As the strike took hold in the encroaching winter of November 1977, people were encouraged to keep buckets of sand and water at home. And at a time when many still relied on open fires for heating, householders were advised to have their chimneys cleaned. The London Fire Brigade issued its own 11-point safety guide, advising checking for smouldering cigarettes and leaving only essential electrical appliances like fridges plugged in. The strike began on 14 November and lasted for nine weeks, running through to the New Year. At the time fire fighters worked a basic 48-hour week, for which they were paid an average of ÂŁ71.10, which amounted to ÂŁ3,700 a year.
The fire fighters finally agreed to settle for a 10% pay rise with guarantees of future increases and they went back to work on 16 January.
Silver Jubilee of 1977
The Queenâs first biggie was the Silver Jubilee of 1977. The two previous monarchs had not reached this milestone; the Queenâs father King George VI died after only 15 years and two months on the throne and her uncle Edward VIII did not even make it to a year.
Britain in 1977 had recently experienced power cuts, a forerunner of the Winter of Discontent.
No wonder the country was in the mood for a party. But celebrations were different then. Childrenâs parties used to consist of jelly and ice-cream and Pass The Parcel; now they want a cabaret show and expensive goody bags. Similarly, the Diamond Jubilee involves a cast of thousands and many hours of airtime each day over the better part of a week. The Silver Jubilee coverage consisted of less than seven hours in total, mostly on Jubilee day itself, with not a single celebrity in sight â unless you count Margot (actress Penelope Keith) from The Good Life presenting Jubilee Jackanory.
The Royal Family was smaller 35 years ago so the Queen had to carry out all her own Jubilee engagements.
She went on a royal progress through Britain, much of it by car, so that she could be seen by as many people as possible, even if time did not allow for a walkabout in every town. Late in Jubilee year, a newspaper published a picture of her looking weary, with the comment âWell she IS 51.â And now here she is doing just as much at 86.
The tide was already turning in 1977 as that was the first year when foreign cars outsold British ones.
In Silver Jubilee year leisure for most people meant watching your newly-acquired (but in many cases rented) colour TV. There were only three channels â BBC1, BBC2 and ITV â but somehow there was always something worth watching. The Professionals was a favourite, starring Martin Shaw (sporting a bubble perm) and Lewis Collins and their Ford Capri, as was The New Avengers, a revival of the Sixties series, starring Joanna Lumley and her Purdey hairdo, a modern take on the pudding bowl. Roots, the ground-breaking mini-series tracing a black manâs family history from capture in West Africa, was broadcast in April 1977. Morecambe and Wise ruled the comedy roost. A staggering 28million â half the population at the time â watched their 1977 Christmas show, a figure unlikely to be exceeded.
Sadly the same might be said of Britainâs Wimbledon hopes. No one has really come close since Virginia Wade won in Silver Jubilee year in front of the Queen.
Before videos and DVDs, people still went to the cinema and in December 1977 everyone wanted to see Star Wars, a new kind of fantasy film about âa galaxy far, far awayâ, that spawned the genre that now includes The Lord Of The Rings and even Harry Potter. Meanwhile the pop world was fragmenting. On one side there was glam rock and disco; on the other, punk. The Sex Pistolsâ snarling version of God Save The Queen was released in Jubilee week and their manager Malcolm McLaren said it was proof that there were âbarbarians at the gateâ.
They never made it through. The popularity of the Royal Family surged in Silver Jubilee year just as it had in Diamond Jubilee year.
We are not the same country we were in 1977. But perhaps we are not entirely different either.

Cost of Living
In 1977, 56 per cent of Britons owned one car or more, 74 per cent owned a washing machine. 50 per cent of people had central heating in their homes. Computers, DVD and CD players were non-existent. A couple with two children had an average net income of ÂŁ363 a week. A single pensioner received an income of ÂŁ180 a week. We spent 25 per cent of our income on food. We spent 10 per cent of our income on leisure and holidays. In 1977, 93 per cent of men aged 25-54 were in work. However female employment in the same age group was 59 per cent. 26 per cent of jobs were in manufacturing.
Despite the vast majority of adults thinking that things were better in the 1970s, figures from that era suggest that life was not easy.
1977: Star Wars fever hits Britain
Thousands of people were flocking to cinemas in the UK to watch the long-awaited blockbuster, Star Wars â a movie which is already setting US box offices alight. Bracing the cold weather, young and old queued from 0700 GMT in London at the Dominion, and Leicester Square cinemas, to snatch up non-reserved tickets which were otherwise booked until March.
Star Wars, which was first released in America seven months ago, has taken audiences by storm and outstripped last yearâs blockbuster Jaws to gross $156m (ÂŁ108m) at the box office. Carrie Fisher, Sir Alec Guiness and little known Harrison Ford star in this fairytale set in space. Produced by Gary Kurtz, written and directed by George Lucas who directed American Graffitti, the U-classified sci-fi film is a classic epic of good versus evil. It has enthralled audiences under a dazzle of special effects with wizards, heroes, monsters in "a galaxy far, far away".
The 900 people involved in the film included giants, dwarfs, artists and the man who built machines for James Bond. Many of the optical special effects were developed in California by Industrial Light and Magic, a George Lucas company. The on-stage special effects were put together at Elstree studios in Britain. Filming took the cast to Tunisia, Death Valley California, Guatemala and the EMI soundstage at Elstree.
The build-up and hype has led to store wars over Star Wars with products including T-shirts, sweets, jig-saw puzzle, watches and food to name but a few. Mr Lucas has published a paperback version and Marvel comics have produced a special edition to meet the thirst for Star Warsâ merchandise. But for those queuing today nothing will satisfy them but a chance to see the film itself â easy targets for touts trying to sell ÂŁ2.20 tickets for ÂŁ30.
1977 The Murders of the Yorkshire Ripper
5 February â 28-year-old homeless woman Irene Richardson is murdered in Leeds, at almost the exact location where prostitute Marcella Claxton was badly injured nine months ago. Police believe that this murder and attempted murder may be connected, along with the murders of Wilma McCann, Emily Jackson and the attempted murders of at least three other women.
Near the body, the police discovered an important clue. The killer had driven his car onto the soft ground of Soldiers Field. The police were able to determine the tire marks as being two India Autoway tires, a Pneumant, and an Esso 110, all cross-ply. With a rear track width of between 4Ⲡ1 1/2" and 4Ⲡ2 1/2", the number of vehicles that it could apply to was twenty-six, including Ford Corsairs. A staggering 100,000 vehicles in West Yorkshire would have to be checked, and before the killer changed any of his tires.
23 April â Prostitute Patricia Atkinson is murdered in Bradford; she is believed to be the fourth woman to die at the hands of the mysterious Yorkshire Ripper.
Patricia Atkinson, aged 32, a prostitute, was the second murder victim in 1977 by Peter Sutcliffe. To the police, the Leeds killer had now expanded his territory to include Bradford. A blood sample showed that Patricia Atkinson had consumed about twenty measures of spirits. The police also found a bloody foot print on a bottom bed sheet from a size seven Dunlop Warwick wellington boot, which matched the foot prints found at the Emily Jackson murder scene. It was clear, from this, and from the injuries sustained, that the Yorkshire Ripper had now expanded his territory to include Bradford. As well, for what would be the only time, he had committed a murder indoors.
26 June â 16-year-old shop assistant Jayne McDonald is found battered and stabbed to death in Chapeltown, Leeds; police believe she is the fifth person to be murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper. About 30 yards into Reginald Street, near an adventure playground, Sutcliffe struck Jayne MacDonald with the hammer on the back of the head. After she fell down, he then dragged her, face down, about 20 yards into the corner of the play area. Her shoes made a "horrible scraping noise" along the ground as he dragged her. He hit her again with the hammer and then pulled her clothes up and stabbed her several times in the chest and in the back.
The slaying of a young girl, not connected to the prostitute trade, an "innocent", brought not only national attention to the case, and outrage from the public not seen in the earlier murder cases, but also caused Chief Constable Ronald Gregory to appoint his most senior detective, Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield to be in overall charge of the escalating Ripper murder investigations. Peter Sutcliffe claims to have been shocked when he saw the newspaper headlines that Jayne MacDonald had not been a prostitute as he had assumed.
Jayneâs father, Wilf MacDonald, a former railwayman, was to die two years after her murder, never having recovered from the ordeal of her murder.
10 July â Bradford woman Maureen Long, 42 is injured in an attack believed to have been committed by the Yorkshire Ripper in the West Yorkshire city.
Maureen Long had remembered going to the cloak room at the club, and walking towards the city centre. She also remembered his white Ford with the black roof. But the description of her attacker that she was able to provide â white, well-built man, aged 36 or 37, about 6ft. 1in. tall, puffy cheeks, thickish eyebrows, collar-length wiry blond hair, with noticeably large hands â relieved Peter Sutcliffe of some of his worries about being caught. His only concern was the description of his car by the nightwatchman. In August he sold the white Ford Corsair to Ronnie Barker. When it broke down, Sutcliffe reluctantly took it back, stripped the car down, and redistributed the spare parts around the replacement car he had bought in September 1977, a red Ford Corsair.
10 October â Missing 20-year-old prostitute Jean Jordan is found dead in Chorlton, Manchester, nine days after she was last seen alive. Police believe that the Yorkshire Ripper may have killed her; the first crime outside Yorkshire which the killer has been suspected of.
Jean Jordan, also known as Jean Royle, and a prostitute, was killed on October 1 1977 as the Yorkshire Ripper expanded his territory to include Manchester. The events of the murder resulted in the Yorkshire Ripper leaving a clue that could be (and was) directly traced to him. Sutcliffe would also return to the body nine days later to try and recover the incriminating ÂŁ5 pound note evidence, and when he failed, would carry out the worst attack and mutilations on any of his victims.
The handbag had not been found on October 10th, as it was just outside the police search area. The ÂŁ5 note, which Peter Sutcliffe had been searching for on his return visit to Manchester, had finally been found. The incriminating note, the police discovered, had been from a batch issued in pay packets days before the murder.
Unfortunately, the five day delay in its discovery, coupled with the delay caused by the fact the body had not been discovered before Sutcliffe returned to it, and other factors, such as the delay by the police it announcing its discovery and the serial number, meant that too much time had passed to further narrow the search for its owner by any public input (see ÂŁ5 Note Clue for information about the hunt for the owner of the note).
28 October â Police in Yorkshire appeal for help in finding the Yorkshire Ripper, who is believed to be responsible for a series of murders and attacks on women across the county during the last two years.
14 December â 25-year-old Leeds prostitute Marilyn Moore is injured in an attack believed to have been committed by the Yorkshire Ripper.
Marilyn Moore, a 25-year-old prostitute, survived an attack by Peter Sutcliffe, and provided one of the best photofits of the suspect from a known Ripper victim. As well, a clue found at the scene tied this attack to the Irene Richardson murder. Her description of the car was that is was a dark coloured or maroon vehicle, about the size of a Morris Oxford. Sutcliffe was, in fact, driving his red Ford Corsair. The police found an important clue in the tire track evidence that they found at the scene of the attack on Marilyn Moore. The tire tracks where consistent with the tire track evidence found at the Irene Richardson murder scene, the same India Autoway cross-ply tires were on the front wheels. There was no doubt that the Yorkshire Ripper had been the one who had attacked Marilyn Moore.

MIKEYâS PERSONAL BLOG 161, June 2019
Last Saturday night, I celebrated my cousin Nathan Dunklingâs 21st birthday at The Comic's Lounge in North Melbourne. Social gatherings like birthday parties can often be huge anxiety triggers for me but somehow my anxiety was under control tonight even being in a large group of people and inside a crowded live comedy venue. Yes it filled up very quickly which meant that the volume levels of conversation gradually rose up and it was very difficult to hear what was going on even at my own table.
Some of Nathanâs friends were sitting at my table and so it was hard for me to engage in conversation with them. Thankfully I had a solution to this, pulling out my phone and playing Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery to curb my boredom levels before the show actually began. Some people might pull out the âanti-socialâ card but I really donât care as I see it as a coping mechanism and way of feeling comfortable when I canât connect with the people around me. Plus waiting for our meals did take a long time so I didnât have much else to do.
Finally around 8.15pm, the MC for the evening Josh Earl began his comedy routine whilst I began chowing away at my entree, salt and pepper calarami. I also ordered an Atlantic salmon for mains which was really delicious. There were four comedians in total including an American lady named Eve, an Australian named Claire and the main headliner Dave Thornton. Honestly it was a very hit and miss affair for me. Â Plus I felt like there were too many breaks in between and it seemed to stretch the night out a bit too late for me (We were there for over 4 hours).
Admittedly, some jokes simply soared over my head perhaps because I missed the context of what they were talking about. Others I basically didnât find funny at all. Itâs not to say that I donât have a sense of humour, more I can only stomach so many jokes related to Sex - poo, dicks, vaginas, masturbation, circumcision, vasectomies. Religion - Jewish people. Christian people, believing in God. Children - dealing with being a parent, being able to handle kids, changing nappies. Iâve pretty much heard it all. I think a lot of it depends on the delivery of the joke too. If itâs too forced, Iâm most likely not going to laugh at it. Still it was an enjoyable night out and good value for money.
On Sunday morning, we checked out of our hotel room at Best Western Melbourne City Hotel - Formerly Pensione Hotel and had breakfast downstairs at Oliver's. Then we drove down to St. Kilda to visit the Esplanade Market and walked along the pier. Even though the air was fairly cold, eventually the sun broke through the overcast clouds and it become a lovely morning to check out the scenic views. I do get a little nervous when it comes to passing by stalls in a market which some sellers trying really hard to get my to buy something but itâs nice just having a browse and watching the people walking their dogs along the footpath.
On Monday morning, I had an appointment with my support worker Seb at Jamaica Blue Cranbourne. A couple of weeks ago, I was feeling pretty conflicted and disheartened about the service Mentis Assist was providing to me. There was a lot of being messed around with lack of communication and no confirmations being made over the past few weeks besides having one fill in support worker. Everything felt like it was in limbo. I sent a text message to Seb yesterday but I had no idea if he would even turn up today.
Eventually he did reply and things got back on track again today. What was alarming to me though was the fact that he wasnât informed about what was happening with me over the past few weeks. Nobody at Mentis Assist told him that a replacement support worker would be organised for me or that my appointment would be switched to Tuesday afternoon. It was almost enough for me to pull the plug but honestly none of this is Sebâs fault, just the broken system that had left me hanging.
On Monday afternoon, I had my second last Creative Writing class at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East. I have to admit that I was stuck in a rut of sorts after the last class and really struggled on the previous homework task of coming up with five different endings to a short story I began in Week 3. I was feeling a little uncertain about what Iâd come up with but at least I gave it a go.
ENDINGS HOMEWORK EXERCISE
Ryan is determined to escape the trappings of his old life and even in these dire circumstances, he will make it to Fiji one way or another.
Ryan decides to build friendships with the locals in New Caledonia and eventually settles there.
Ryan sends a distress call back home to Australia in order to be saved from the ordeal he has been through. He managed to escape the plane crash with only minor injuries, however it has had a major impact on him psychologically. He makes contact with a counselor to find strategies to overcome his trauma.
Ryan ends up in a local hospital wired up to machines - life support, oxygen, heart rate monitor. The experience of the plane crash was too much for him and has taken a tool on him physically as well as mentally and emotionally.
Upon landing in New Caledonia, Ryan ends up getting himself captured by a tribe of warriors, clad with wooden spears and shields, deep inside the bushland. Will he manage to survive?
During todayâs class, we looked into scenes vs. chapters, improving your draft, killing off your darlings and the habits of successful authors. Scenes are more complicated and more important than chapters. They are very specific building blocks within your story. They also need tension and conflict. Each scene can be divided into two parts: ACTION (Goal, conflict, disaster) and REACTION (Reaction, dilemma, decision).
Chapters are arbitrary divisions within a book. They impose order and create a certain sense of structure. Chapter breaks are more about pacing and must be placed strategically. They leave readers with a question or a reason to know more. Scene structure has nothing to do with chapter breaks.
Improving your draft. Your first draft is the writing equivalent of running a marathon. You need to take a step back, question the structure and the characters, ask whether all the characters want the same thing, does the story contain enough conflict. After draft two and beyond, you need to be a little more critical with your work. Hire a professional editor and get your manuscript copy edited. Then finally have the manuscript proof read.
Killing off your darlings. Cut out any elements that doesnât serve to further the work as a whole, in order to enhance the story. Darlings can be words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs or characters. The main benefits of killing off your darlings are: it strengthens your characters and plot, improves the overall quality of your writing and refines your self discipline. Things to cut: weak characters, extraneous plot lines, backstory and prologues.
The habits of successful authors include write everyday, finish your stories, learn the rules, break the rules, create their own inspiration, donât slack off on the hard stuff, follow their hearts and not the market, develop a thick skin, set their stories free, love what they do, write with joy and embrace fragments of writing.
On Monday night, I went to my Boxing small group fitness class with CinFull Fitness. Tonight was a very small group with just myself, Rodney Sack and Ben Milton. We each got our measurements taken before we actually started. Itâs been something of a fleeting thought for me, particularly the scales and weighing myself. Itâs not longer been an unhealthy obsession. In fact, I hardly ever weigh myself at all these days. I used to get really fixated on THE NUMBER but now Iâm able to let it go more easily considering itâs not a true representation of how âfatâ or âoverweightâ I am. There are so many other factors that go into it like muscle mass and water weight.
Tonightâs class consisted of drills and partner work, push ups, plank holds, ground and pounds, sit up punches, V-ups, Russian twists, star jumps, walking lunges and squat holds.
Being paired up with a hard-hitter like Rodney certainly got me out of my comfort zone. I was a little nervous about not being able to handle it (and be accidentally punched in the face) but I wasnât going to let that fear stop me. I needed to release all of those negative labels that have been given to me in the past (weak, slow, incapable, incompetent, useless, a loser). Iâm not any of those things. Sometimes I really do surprise myself in being able to overcome a struggle such as physical fatigue or being out of breath. I know that Iâm not as fit as some of the others but that fact shouldnât stop me from participating in the class.
On Wednesday morning, I attended the funeral of Rita Hartney at Tobin Brothers in Berwick. I knew Rita from a few years ago when she began hosting her radio program Hot Topics With Rita at Casey Radio - 97.7FM as well as her motivational talks and appearances at places such as Balla Balla Community Centre and U3A Cranbourne. She also ran a short course called Speaking Before The Public which helped me work on self confidence and oral presentation skills. It was only a few weeks ago that I learned of her decline in health and subsequent passing on Facebook.
After signing the guest book and taking a copy of Ritaâs book Itâs Time For Women to Take Control, Mum and I made our way into the main service room which was packed with Ritaâs family, friends and other guests. We were really lucky to find a couple of spare seats to sit down in. It was a really beautiful service which highlighted the many strengths and achievements that Rita had gained over the years. She really had a significant impact on many peopleâs lives.
The speeches were both funny and moving, painting Rita as a strong, determined woman trying to make her mark in a male dominated world. The music selection was very fitting as well, reflecting Ritaâs colourful and flamboyant personality. Songs included Elvis Presleyâs Devil in Disguise and Helen Reddyâs I Am Woman.
Attending someoneâs funeral seems to give me a gentle reminder about how precious life truly is. That you really do need to be grateful for what you have and make every moment count. It also forces me to think about my own funeral. Not just the kinds of arrangements that I will have but questions like: Who will be attending? What will I be remembered for? What kind of mark will I leave behind? I never used to be this philosophical about funerals until more recently when I realised how important it is not to let my life go to waste.
On Thursday morning, I decided to take myself off to Casey Smiles Dental Clinic after experiencing more annoying dental pain, this time on the right hand side of my mouth. I was really hoping that the pain would subside with some simply remedies but after having a restless night with this agonizing toothache, it was time to face the music and the dentist once more.
The good news was that I didnât have to get my x-rays done like last time as they were already on my patient record. It was also easier to explain to Dr. Mohamed where abouts the pain was coming from and not simply guess which tooth it was. He gave me two options: first would be to exact it like last time, which would be easier and more cost effective. The second option was to have a root canal done in order to potentially save the tooth. However, he warned me that he could cost me up to $1500. So obviously I went with option one.
Thankfully the process was a lot quicker this time around. There was a young female dental assistant doing some training and learning about all the different surgical instruments and how to use the suction hose. It provided a nice distraction for me. Dr. Mohamed reminded me to keep breathing as he applied pressure to the decayed tooth. It was over and done with within a few minutes. The anesthesia needle probably hurt more than the actual tooth removal did. Plus it only cost me $160 as it was a basic tooth removal and it didnât need to be surgically removed like last time.

The US Military Is Now Recruiting Soldiers To Fight In A War That Started Before They Were Born

New recruits take their oaths.
"id": 121773287
Today, for the first time in history, a young American can enlist to fight in a US war that started before he or she was born.
As the war in Afghanistan enters its 18th year and the US Army falls thousands short of its recruiting goals, the Pentagon is recognizing it has to do something different to recruit an age group that does not remember 9/11 and for whom the âwar on terrorâ has been background noise their entire lives. This includes rethinking some of its traditional military PR, which has unintentionally turned the corner from inspiring to morbid by highlighting that some of the young people enlisting today are taking over the same tasks in the very same places their parents fought almost a generation ago.
This has led to a strangely poignant overlap between real military press releases and the brutal satire of The Onion. A story this summer titled âHistory Repeats: Son Follows Fatherâs Footsteps Into Army Serviceâ celebrated a recruit who was joining the same unit his father had previously been assigned to in Afghanistan. A few months earlier, a widely shared satirical article had been titled âSoldier Excited to Take Over Fatherâs Old Afghanistan Patrol Route.â
The grim reality was not lost on the military.
âThereâs a New âFather and Son Served in Afghanistanâ Puff Piece, and Boy Is It Depressing,â read the headline on Task & Purpose, a news site run by military veterans.

But this underscores a very real concern for military leaders â that the cost of the US âwar on terrorâ is being borne by an increasingly smaller number of families, isolated and unnoticed by the rest of the country. At the same time, the US military footprint across the globe has expanded rapidly since former president George W. Bush ordered US troops into Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom on Oct. 7, 2001. The US still has 15,000 troops in Afghanistan, but last year Americans also died in combat in places like Yemen, Niger, Syria, and Somalia, where most people back home â including some members of Congress â were not even aware the US was fighting.
âMost Americans are only vaguely aware that weâre still fighting overseas, and the reason for that is that they donât have any skin in the game,â retired Army Lt. Gen. David Barno, a former US commander in Afghanistan, told BuzzFeed News. âThatâs not a very healthy thing for a society, if it becomes the same 1% doing this from generation to generation while the rest is relatively oblivious.â
Seven US service members have died in combat in Afghanistan this year, part of more than 2,300 Americans who have been killed there since October 2001. Nearly 21,000 have been wounded.
A âfamily businessâ
Thereâs a reason that the US Army itself promotes service as a âfamily business.â Having a relative who served in the military has long been a key indicator of whether young people will consider enlisting. Roughly 83% of young Americans who enlisted in 2015 had a family member who served in the military, and more than a third had a parent who did so, according to Defense Department data.
And that group is shrinking. More than three-quarters of adults over the age of 50 said they had an immediate family member who had served in the military, according to a Pew Research Center survey from 2011. Only a third of those ages 18â29 did.
The same pattern also influences who gets to positions of leadership. A 2009 analysis of Defense Department data showed that 65% of white officers had a father who served in the military.
Itâs not unusual for children to follow in their parentsâ footsteps â the children of doctors and lawyers also are more likely to enter those professions â but itâs different when that âwar has become the family business,â said Amy Schafer, who wrote a report on the issue at the Center for a New American Security.

âWhat is different here is that this professional inheritance has created a warrior caste, which is wielding force on behalf of a democracy while the rest of the country isnât involved,â she told BuzzFeed News.
Young Americans now becoming eligible to enlist have seen primarily two portrayals of military service in their lives â either the heroics of Navy SEALs taking out high-profile terrorists or soldiers coming back with post-traumatic stress disorder in films such as American Sniper or The Hurt Locker, she said. One makes all military service seem unrealistic for most, the other a terrifying ordeal that ruins lives. This increases the likelihood that those who do enlist come from families and communities where they have been exposed to a more realistic image, and the range of options, she said.
âThere is this huge respect and admiration for the military [in the US public], and very little real understanding,â she said.
âA looming crisisâ
Since the US eliminated the military draft in 1973, the military has worked hard to maintain the all-volunteer force, upping enlistment and reenlistment bonuses and offering shorter contracts. But the new generation presents unprecedented challenges.
Last month, the US Army announced that it had missed its recruiting goals for the first time since 2005 despite pouring an additional $200 million into incentives, such as bonuses, and waiving some mental health and other requirements. It fell short 6,500 soldiers of the 76,500 new active-duty recruits it was seeking to grow the force after years of downsizing.
More than 70% of young Americans between 17 and 24 â the Armyâs prime recruiting demographic â are ineligible to serve due to not meeting fitness standards; having medical, mental health, or substance abuse issues, substance abuse, or a criminal history. Of the 1.7 million left, US Army Recruiting Command estimates that only roughly 136,000 would be interested, partly due to the booming economy. For most of those who donât have family ties, recruiters say itâs a struggle to get them to consider the military as a top choice for their future, not a last resort.
This yearâs shortfall of 6,500 was just the âcanary in the coal mine of a looming crisis,â said Thomas Spoehr, a retired Army three-star general who is the director for national defense at the conservative Heritage Foundation.
âThat initial rush of patriotism after 9/11 is over, and polls show that many US citizens donât really perceive serious threats to America â so they think, âmaybe the need for me is not that great, maybe my country doesnât need me,ââ he said. Even those with family connections may be put off joining âa super long war to do the same thing your dad did,â he said.
Since many recruits tend to prefer the Marine Corps and Air Force over the Army, they have mainly been shielded from the Armyâs recruitment problems for now, he said.
âSomething for other people to doâ
Military leaders have been warning for more than a decade that there would be a recruiting impact from the limitation of military service to a relatively small group of Americans.
âEven after 9/11, in the absence of a draft, for a growing number of Americans, service in the military, no matter how laudable, has become something for other people to do,â then-defense secretary Robert Gates said in a well-known speech about the widening gap between the military and civilians at Duke University in 2010.

Those âother peopleâ disproportionately come from only some regions of the US. What the military measures as âpropensity to serveâ is more heavily concentrated in the South and Mountain West, while major cities, the Northeast, and the West Coast are desert zones for military recruiters. About 44% of 18- to 24-year-olds who enlisted in 2016 came from the South, according to a Defense Departmentâcommissioned report.
While being careful to note that a family tradition of military service is a positive thing, itâs the continued recruiting from the same parts of the country â and the same families â that military leaders and analysts worry will become a problem for the all-volunteer force.
âYou get to a point where you have such a rift between the military and the rest of the American people that you now have in this country a US public not even aware of the sacrifice that is being made,â Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from Illinois and combat veteran who lost both her legs in the Iraq War, told BuzzFeed News. She said that rift came into sharp relief for her when some of her fellow lawmakers werenât even aware of a recent combat death, surprised as it was mentioned in passing.
âWeâve had more discussions about people kneeling during the national anthem than we have about when the war in Afghanistan is going to end,â Duckworth told an audience at an event in Washington last month titled âA Generation at War.â
âThese decades have changed the psychology of American citizensâ
Military analysts who study recruitment say the impact of endless counterterrorism wars on who enlists and why remains to be seen, but itâs clear that family service will continue to be a main motivator.
Last year, all three of Anne Wilsonâs children reported to basic training within weeks of each other. Her 18-year-old daughter, Cadi, and her twin 22-year-old sons, Dominic and Maveric, all enlisted in the US Navy after their stepfather, a US Army veteran, encouraged them to take advantage of the educational benefits and travel that would enable them to leave their construction jobs in the small town. They were 2 and 5 years old, respectively, on 9/11.

"id": 121773287
âThereâs nothing where we live, there are no good jobs,â said Anne, who also wanted to enlist when she was young but was stopped by her father, a veteran, who worried about the treatment of women in the military.
âHe said you sign those papers, you wonât be breathing anymore,â she remembered, laughing. âSo I get to live it through my kids, which is really nice. Their grandfathers, who both served in the Army, are proud as peacocks.â
But she acknowledged that without their family ties it would have been extremely unlikely that they would have been exposed to military service as an option. None of their friends in East Bethany, New York, were in the military. After all three of her children enlisted, and one of them deployed abroad, many of Wilsonâs friends and neighbors in the small town told her they would be âworried sickâ if their children joined the military.
However, the deepening split between generations of military families and the rest of the country is unlikely to be resolved soon. Most of the half dozen current and former military officials interviewed by BuzzFeed News said they did not see it changing unless the US enters another major conflict that requires the return of the draft.
âThese decades have changed the psychology of American citizens,â Barno said. âIf suddenly they were expected to enlist, it would send shock waves through the American public. They now basically assume that they can rely on these people who want to volunteer, but that itâs not a responsibility of citizenship to do so.â

"A Friend in Aretha: The Spiritual Power of the Queen of Soul's 'Amazing Grace'": The Ringer's Rembert Browne pays tribute to the inimitable icon who passed away yesterday at age 76. Also make sure to read our critic Odie Henderson's deeply moving obituary.
âAt this point in her career, Aretha was already a legend. A year before Amazing Grace, sheâd released a greatest-hits album and won her fourth of eight consecutive Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. One could argue that while she had a great deal more to achieve, she didnât have much more to prove. And maybe to an average superstar this would be true, but weâre talking Aretha Franklin, lest we forget. And on those two days, she reminded everyone that while she may have had contemporaries, she had no peers. Sure, Aretha was not the first to grow up in the church and take a booming voice to the mainstream, gaining worldwide fame from secular music. But on these two days, she came back to the black church. And it wasnât just a sweet reminder that she hadnât lost a step. She was here for her playground respect, ready to send a warning shot to any that had doubted herâshe had gotten stronger. Amazing Grace is Aretha, at her most raw and stripped down, resulting in Aretha at her most powerful.â
2.Â
"Dazzling 'Cielo' Provides Dose of Spiritual Awareness": My Indie Outlook review of Alison McAlpine's visually staggering documentary, now playing at Film Forum in New York City.
âIn terms of sheer visual majesty, McAlpineâs film ranks alongside Warwick Thorntonâs Australian western âSweet Countryâ as one of the yearâs great achievements in cinematography. Whereas Thorntonâs picture, co-lensed with Dylan River, depicts human brutality set against breathtakingly beautiful (and naggingly indifferent) landscapes, âCieloâ juxtaposes staggering nighttime vistas with intimate vignettes centering on the people who live in northern Chileâs Atacama Desert. As photographed by ace DP BenjamĂn Echazarreta (âA Fantastic Womanâ), the skies hovering above this desert terrainâthe driest in the worldâseem fraught with life, containing secrets that would be impossible for any human mind to comprehend. Some people may be driven mad by the very concept of infinite space, yet I find the undefinable nature of the cosmos to be comforting. Since the dawn of time, prejudice and bloodshed have been propelled by those mortal beings who delude themselves and their followers into thinking they have all the answers. This grand fallacy provides each belief system with a sense of superiority that swiftly crumbles as soon as oneâs gaze is cleared of all blind spots.â
3.
"Trial runs for fascism are in full flow": Powerful commentary published in June by Finian O'Toole of The Irish Times.
âIt is easy to dismiss Donald Trump as an ignoramus, not least because he is. But he has an acute understanding of one thing: test marketing. He created himself in the gossip pages of the New York tabloids, where celebrity is manufactured by planting outrageous stories that you can later confirm or deny depending on how they go down. And he recreated himself in reality TV where the storylines can be adjusted according to the ratings. Put something out there, pull it back, adjust, go again. Fascism doesnât arise suddenly in an existing democracy. It is not easy to get people to give up their ideas of freedom and civility. You have to do trial runs that, if they are done well, serve two purposes. They get people used to something they may initially recoil from; and they allow you to refine and calibrate. This is what is happening now and we would be fools not to see it.â
4.Â
"'I Don't Care If It Never Shows in a Theater': Steven Soderbergh on 'sex, lies, and videotape,' 4K HDR and the Studio System": In conversation with Jim Hemphill at Filmmaker Magazine.
âThere were a lot of people, as part of the French New Wave and then the British New Wave, experimenting with this idea of unlocking the picture from the sound. I was very intrigued by that, so that whole opening was built to take advantage of the things that you can do when you uncouple those two elements. It was written very specifically to go that way. As it turned out, again, she turned out to be the right vessel to pull people through the story. Itâs interesting in retrospect, all these years later, to see how focused the movie is on her experience. All the distance and the time enabled me to see it from 30,000 feet up and I realized, oh, part of the appeal of her character is this idea that sheâs not hip. Sheâs not really with it. She doesnât really get it. She seems to be the least enlightened person in that quartet. And yet, in a critical moment, she has a clarity that none of the other characters are able to muster. Thereâs something very appealing about that, watching that transformation happen with her. She ends up having an experience in this conversation with Jimmy Spaderâs character that ends up doing something to both of them that neither of them, I think, anticipated. I think that, just from an emotional standpoint, is satisfying, to watch that transformation. All of these characters, without knowing it, are heading into this collision thatâs going to reverberate for them for the rest of their lives, but theyâre completely unaware of it.â
5.Â
"Tonawanda's Larry Titzler, 95, writes book about his WWII adventures": Teresa Sharp of The Buffalo News chats with the father of our longtime critic Susan Wloszczyna about his new book.
ââIt was the Great Depression and I spent my time at Riverside Park, where they had a swimming pool and baseball diamonds, as well as at the Riverside Theater,â he recently recalled in a conversation in his Tonawanda home. âOnce in a while, my mother would take me on a streetcar downtown where sheâd shop at Hens and Kelly and sheâd take me to a movie at Sheaâs Hippodrome or Great Lakes Theater, but that didnât happen very often.â This 1940 Riverside High School graduate completed a one-year program at the former Chown School of Business in Buffalo before joining Great Lakes Engineering Co. in Tonawanda. He was drafted and inducted into the U.S. Army Jan. 23, 1943. âI had poor eyesight,â he recalled. âI was nearsighted and the doctor who examined me for the Army said I could either be 4-F or go into the Army. I decided I couldnât stay home when everyone else I knew was going in the service and I felt I should contribute something to my country. You know, my mother and father never knew I had that choice. Never.ââ

Breweries Collaborate on Reunion Ale; Raise Funds for Harvey Relief
October 2, 2017
Clifton Park, NY â In good times and challenging times, craft beer has always served as a common bond bringing people together. As our country has recently encountered catastrophic hurricanes in Houston and Florida, the brewing community helps unite us all with support efforts in these areas while teaming up to brew beers directly benefiting people in ravaged areas. Shmaltz Brewing, whose former Coney Island nano brewery fell to Hurricane Sandy in 2012, has always been about the spirit of collaboration. To raise funds for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, the Upstate New York brewery joins 8th Wonder Brewery (Houston, TX), Renegade Brewing (Denver, CO), and Terrapin Beer (Athens, GA) for three exceptional versions of Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ. The official release of Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ takes place next week at Great American Beer Festival (Denver, CO: Oct. 5 â 7).
Great American Beer Festival â Tasting Events: GABF: Mid-Atlantic Section (Oct. 5-7) Localish Market (Oct. 6, 3pm â 5pm) Falling Rock Tap House (Oct. 7 @ 9pm)
The Reunion project launched in 2010 by dear friends and co-workers Alan Shapiro and Pete Slosbergâs (creator of Peteâs Wicked Aleâ˘) in memory of Virginia MacLean, a dedicated cancer research supporter who lost her own battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. In addition to raising funds for the victims of Hurricane Harvey, Reunion proceeds will also be donated to the Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research (IMBCR). For the seventh year, Shmaltz partners with Terrapin Brewmaster Brian âSpikeâ Buckowski to brew a new recipe of Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ. For 2017, the collaboration beer is a Tart Brown Ale (7% ABV) with a light body and hint of cherry, and will be nationally available in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select bars.
Hailing back to Shmaltzâs Coney Island days, 8th Wonderâs Co-Founder Ryan Soroka was a former Shmaltz intern brewing on their nano system. While brewing a Funnel Cake beer, there was no longer 2-Row barley available so he only used specialty malts. Needless to say, that beer didnât turn out well, but brewers need to start somewhere and rise the ranks. Today, Soroka is among one of the countryâs finest brewers with a thriving company. When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, 8th Wonder stepped up to help save stranded survivors with his brewery truck.
8th Wonderâs take on the Reunion base recipe is Dirty Coast â Murky Brown IPA. Roasted malt and caramel flavors harmoniously collide with subtle Warrior hop bittering and an onslaught of Amarillo, Simcoe, and Citra hop flavors and aromas. Dirty Coast â Murky Brown IPA is a nod to the tasty NEIPAs; itâs a Brown IPA with NEIPA characteristics.
Also a former Shmaltz intern, Brian OâConnell of Renegade Brewing brews an Imperial Dark Brown Ale (7.7% ABV) with the same brown ale malt bill. Renegade uses only Colorado grown Zoso hops from Misty Mountain hop farm. The rich, chocolately brown ale takes full advantage of its distinctive Trappist Ale yeast, which provides a smooth and easy banana finish. OâConnell, Soroka, and Shmaltz founder Jeremy Cowan will all celebrate the national release of Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ at Great American Beer Festival.
Join the founders of Shmaltz, 8th Wonder, Renegade, and Falling Rock as they raise proceeds for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund and IMBCR with the official launch event for Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ at Falling Rock Tap House (1919 Blake Street, Denver, CO) on Saturday, Oct. 7 (9pm). In addition to Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ, Shmaltz will also have on tap Bittersweet Lennyâs R.I.P.A.ÂŽ and Slingshot American Craft LagerÂŽ. On Oct. 6, Shmaltz hosts a Yidd(ish) at the Local(ish) Market (1803 16th St, Denver, 5pm-7pm) tasting event featuring Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ, Sheâbrew Double IPAÂŽ, Tribal WitÂŽ, Slingshot American Craft LagerÂŽ, and Bittersweet Lennyâs R.I.P.A.ÂŽ.
National fundraising events for Reunion Ale 2017ÂŽ will be announced soon, and all Shmaltz events are listed on http://ift.tt/2b6QHfq
About Shmaltz Brewing Company Founder and owner Jeremy Cowan established Shmaltz Brewing in San Francisco in 1996. The first 100 cases of Heâbrew BeerÂŽ were hand-bottled and delivered throughout the Bay Area from the back of his Grandmotherâs Volvo. After 17 years of being an outspoken cheerleader for contract brewing, Cowan and staff opened their own New York State production brewery in 2013 in Clifton Park, 10 minutes north of Albany. Shmaltzâs home boasts a 50-barrel brewhouse with 30,000 barrels of annual capacity and packages a diverse and tasty variety of core and seasonal favorites in 12 and 22-ounce bottles and kegs. Shmaltz Brewing now sells Heâbrew Beer across 35 states, through 40 wholesalers and in nearly 5,000 retailers.
About 8th Wonder We are dedicated to crafting fresh, flavorful brews, and weâre proud to be a part of the Houston beerscape. In 1965, the doors to the Houston Astrodome opened for the first time. Dubbed the âEighth Wonder of the World,â this first ever air-conditioned domed stadium coincided with Houstonâs launch into the global spotlight. From a modern architectural marvel to space exploration, nothing could hold Htown back. In 2013, inspired by the spirit of Houston, we began brewing beer in a dome-like warehouse in East Downtown. Exploring styles from across the beer world, each batch we brew undergoes strict flavor analysis and quality control. We like good beer and good fun, and we strive to craft both at 8th Wonder.
About Renegade Brewing Company Offensively Delicious? Yes, thatâs what our beer is. Always creative and always packed with flavor. This is beer for those who do the donâts and donât the dos, the Renegades. We donât care about traditional styles, or following the trends, we care about making fâing delicious beer that we are proud to serve. On June 26, 2011, Renegade Brewing Company opened its doors and poured the first pint at 925 W. 9th Avenue in Denver. Brian and Khara OâConnell proudly served the cardinal brews with joy and exhaustion as their business was finally open after two years in the making. With a new facility and 60 barrel tanks on line, Renegade currently has five year-round beers, and two of those originated as backyard recipes by Brian.
About Terrapin Beer Co. Terrapin Beer Co. began as a daydream between founders John Cochran and Spike Buckowski. The two recognized that they had something to contribute to the brewing industry in the southeast, and began crafting recipes. In April of 2002, Rye Pale Ale made its first appearance in Athens, GA. Only a short six months later, Rye made it to Denver for GABF, where John and Spike took home a Gold Medal for the beer in the American Pale Ale Category. In 2007, Terrapin Beer Co. moved into its current location on Newton Bridge Road in Athens, and set out to share its unique beers with its hometown and the rest of the Southeast. Inspired by the creative culture of Athens, Terrapin began to add to its beer line up, with unique beers like W-n-B, Hopsecutioner, and so many others. Today, Rye Pale Ale is accompanied by six other year-round beers, four seasonal sessions, and at least a dozen special projects, side projects and collaborations.

10 epic sci-fi novels you should read before they become blockbusters http://ift.tt/2jM2N1D
Itâs a good time to be a fan of science-fiction movies. Whether your tastes favor explosive, big-budget spectacles or subtle, thought-provoking stories that explore lifeâs biggest questions, the last few years have offered up something for everyone â and the same can be said for whatâs headed to the big screen down the road.
Sci-fi literature has long been fertile ground for Hollywood, and with some of the cinemaâs most popular projects beginning as novels or short stories that made the leap from page to screen, itâs easy to get ahead of the curve when it comes to sci-fi movies. In that vein, weâve compiled a list of some of the sci-fi stories that currently have big-screen adaptations in various stages of development, so you can get an early peek at the next big things hitting theaters. Weâll periodically update this article as time goes on, too, so feel free to leave a comment with any projects youâd like to see added to the list.
Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
This award-winning 2014 novel followed a group of four female scientists â including a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor â who set out to explore a mysterious region known as âArea Xâ after the previous 11 attempts to survey the area resulted in strange, terrifying results for everyone involved with the expeditions. The first book in a trilogy, Annihilation won the 2014 Nebula Award for the yearâs best sci-fi novel.
Written and directed by Ex Machina filmmaker Alex Garland, the big-screen adaptation of Annihilation has an all-star cast that features Academy Award winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan) as the biologist and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) as the psychologist, as well as Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tessa Thompson (Creed), Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina), and David Gyasi (Containment). The film is expected to arrive in theaters sometime during 2017.

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
Another Nebula Award winner, The Forever War tells the story of a soldier recruited to battle an aggressive alien species light-years from Earth in a two-year conflict, only to discover that traveling to and from the battlefield has actually caused several decades to pass on Earth. Coming home to an Earth very different from the one he left, heâs uncertain whether this new world was indeed worth fighting for.
Ridley Scott first announced he was adapting The Forever War in 2008, but the project eventually fell into development limbo until Warner Bros. Pictures picked up the rights to the story again in 2015. Prometheus and Passengers writer Jon Spaihts is currently penning the script for the film, and Channing Tatum is attached to star in it. Thereâs no release date set for the film at this point.

Fortunately, The Milk by Neil Gaiman
Acclaimed storyteller Neil Gaiman and comic book artist Skottie Young collaborated on this 2013 story about a father who goes out to get some milk, only to get caught up in a wild adventure involving time travel, a stegosaurus piloting a balloon, and a volcano god, among other unexpected obstacles.
Back in 2015, it was reported that Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs the World filmmaker Edgar Wright was attached to direct Johnny Depp in an adaptation of the story, with Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords penning the script. That combination had 20th Century Fox in early talks for the rights to the film, but it almost seems too good to be true â which is probably why we havenât heard anything about the project since that initial announcement.

Loganâs Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson
This 1967 novel is set in a dystopian future with scarce resources for the human population, leading society to implement a rule that requires everyone over the age of 21 to voluntarily end their lives. The novel was adapted into a 1976 film starring Michael York which was nominated for three Academy Awards and won one for its visual effects. A remake was first announced back in the 1990s, and an update in July 2015 had X-Men franchise screenwriter Simon Kinberg penning yet another draft of the script. Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson
Robopocalypse describes the origins, evolution, and culmination of mankindâs devastating, global battle with an artificial intelligence that takes over automated services and machines. Much in the same way World War Z chronicled humanityâs war with zombies through a collection of fictional accounts from the front lines, the story unfolds from the perspective of several characters in different locations around the world as they watch the world change dramatically â and often horrifically â in front of their eyes. The character eventually find themselves playing integral roles in the war that will decide humanityâs fate.
The book was optioned by Steven Spielberg in 2011 with the filmmaker planning to direct the adaptation himself from a script by The Cabin in the Woods screenwriter and director Drew Goddard, but the project was put on hold in 2013 in order to further develop the script and make it a more manageable production.

The Tempest by Julie Cross
Another story envisioned as the first chapter in a trilogy, Julie Crossâ 2012 novel is a time-travel adventure that has its teenage protagonist accidentally discovering his ability to move through time after he witnesses the murder of his girlfriend. That discovery puts him in the crosshairs of a shadowy government agency and in the middle of a time-spanning war as he struggles to save the life of the girl he loves without ripping apart the fabric of time.
The rights to the novel were picked up by producing partners (and brothers) Scott and Sean Cross â who arenât related to Julie Cross â as well as Mimi Polk Gitlin, a former producing partner of Ridley Scott who teamed with Scott to co-produce the 1991 classic Thelma and Louise. Thereâs no official development timeline or release date announced for the film.

Time Salvager by Wesley Chu
Wesley Chuâs 2015 novel unfolds in a future that has seen mankind depart Earth to colonize the stars, leaving behind a bleak, toxic planet. The protagonist is a convicted criminal whose psychological profile makes him the ideal candidate for an agency that sends people back in time to recover valuable resources and treasures from mankindâs history on Earth in order to prolong the speciesâ future. On his final mission he saves a female scientist destined to die, turning them both into fugitives in the future timeline.
Paramount Pictures picked up the rights to Chuâs novel before it even hit shelves, and Michael Bay is attached to direct the adaptation. Thereâs no word on when the project will go into production or what sort of timeline (pun totally intended) the studio is envisioning for it at this point.
