THE ONE WHERE . . . I INTRODUCE Y'ALL TO LEO!
SOOOO…i have mentioned leo in like, 90 different posts atp and never actually made a "leo intro" (mainly bc i have weird feelings ab sharing him heavily to the rest of the world lol) but! i figured now would be the best time to get into explaining him to y'all.
Tumblr media
LEO , commonly given the last name SCOTT (depends on the dr!) is actually originally the main character's love interest in a hockey romance book i've been in the process of writing. after getting #sickandtired of annoying ass book men i gave up and began drafting one of my own. the main character is literally me (i mean, for christ's sake her name is sloane mackintosh,) and eventually, i began thinking of him in other "au"s (i used to do this a lot on wattpad - i mean DRs but the term AU is usually more digestible to ppl that may not be aware of reality shifting. Anyways.) and began kind of placing him in everything. a list of the drs he is my love interest in is follows;
BETTER CR : (fc silasj2004*) the hockey romance book pretty much as a dr. small changes occur but basically he's the exact same as leo in the book lol
PARENT DR : (fc jack schlossberg. yes. i am one of those girlies. i am not ashamed! at least he has morals + a backbone y'all this could be much worse) the "backstory" is my better cr dr. i'm now a mother of 3 (amelia or mimi, aged 5, giselle or gigi, aged 4 and i'm pregnant with vincenzo, our final kid,) and it follows our life after what would be the events of the book. i sort-of made it also as like a WAG dr in a sense bc leo is a professional hockey player! (but he retires 2 years before this point in time so idk where my thought process is w this lol)
FORMULA 1 DRIVER DR : (fc pato o'ward MY!!!! mclaren man ln4 U ARE NOTHINGGGGGGG) leonardo dempsey, son of actor patrick dempsey (my forever celebrity crush ugh he's so fine) and driver for aston martin aramco f1 team under #99. i essentially took l*nce str*ll's daddy's boy backstory and gave it to leo bc he is indeed a daddy's boy. the only dr leo and i are enemies to lovers bc i'm too obsessed w him otherwise LMFAO
MARVEL DR : (fc marcello hernandez (MY MAAANNNN)) leo scott, secretly the speedster superhero 'comet'. hired by my dad as essentially a bodyguard (leo's not intimidating AT ALL idek how the hell this is supposed to work LMFAO) as comet and knows me out of costume as his sister's roommate (mj is also in every dr ever and actually is here in this cr. i can never leave her out i love her DOWN) basically marichat vibes (god i miss marichat)
POP STAR DR : (fc marcello hernandez, again) leo sinatra, nepo baby great-grandson of frank sinatra (there's a whole, incredibly large bit of lore ab this LMFAO + he's also a great-grandson in my better cr dr too bc i need my man RICH!) and Saturday Night Live cast member. basically i go on snl and immediately fall in love. i've stolen the 'unlikely couple' weekend update sketch for us & he does domingo, which is my song lol we're funny for it idk
THE FCS, in color photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm missing like, 18 other drs that i can think of but some important info about him;
he's half oaxacan mexican. i've tried my damnedness to find a way to make it obvious but when i was 'designing' him (aka drawing him out) i used jack, silas (*NOTE: he is leo's typical fc if i don't have an designated one for him) and marcello as references to make him look the most like him as i can. the fcs are kind of loose for him but i need a way to like fully visualize him. so. yeah. his 'color palette' (weird way to put it but idk how else) makes him tanner than all three of them i fear. all of the fcs i use (other than jack schlossberg but like. idk his main celebrity lookalike in the better cr is him so i kind of had to) are latino, but i feel like it never ever properly translates when i talk about him bc his name is fucking leopold scott. like. huh.
he's also tall AS FUCK lol and built like a tank lowkey (think tom welling clark kent GOOD GOOGLY MOOGLY) but it's mainly bc he's a hockey player. in every vers he's like. 6'3. shortest he is is w marcello as his fc and even then he's 5'11. (note in pop star dr he gets a lot of comparisons to jacob elordi for some reason??? idk my fans are weird)
he's got big brown baby cow eyes. every. single. time. like that is this man's defining trait and you know what? i would not change that for the world lol
his position in hockey is a goalie! he uses the number #29 and plays for our college and later for the new jersey devils before being traded to the anaheim ducks. after he retires he becomes a firefighter!!!! (which is sooo hot btw)

FROM THE SHADOWS | Official Trailer, Poster & Images
FROM THE SHADOWS, the supernatural horror feature film starring Academy Award® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Bruce Davison (“Ozark,” Willard”), Selena Anduze (“Wanda/Vision,” “Creepshow”), and Tony nominated and multiple Emmy Award winner, Keith David (“Nope,” “The Thing”) will open in five theaters around the country from September 22-28. From The Shadows will have its official red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on September 19th, 2023.
Tumblr media
(L-R) Selena Anduze as Dr. Amara Rowan and Jim Thalman as Peter in FROM THE SHADOWS.
When the enigmatic leader of the Hidden Wisdom cult, Dr. Joseph Cawl (Bruce Davison), and eighteen of his followers all die in a mysterious inferno, the five young survivors suspected of igniting the blaze contact paranormal researcher Amara Rowan (Selena Anduze) to help uncover the real cause of the fire. When they stumble upon the truth behind the disappearance of Cawl’s partner, Dr. Leonard Bertram (Keith David), they become the target of a deranged killer that wants to slaughter them all.

Keith David as Dr. Leonard Bertram
Directed by Mike Sargent, written by Mike Kuciak with story by Ian Holt, (co-author, with Dacre Stoker, of the international bestseller, “Dracula the Un-Dead”, the official sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel, “Dracula”), Mike Kuciak, and Mike Sargent, From The Shadows is produced by Michael Alden, Ian Holt and Mike Kuciak of Alt-House Productions  in partnership with PFG Films. Special Effects makeup is designed by Vincent J. Guastini, with sound design by Academy Award® winner Cecelia Hall. The film’s score is composed by horror legend, Alan Howarth, who collaborated with John Carpenter for the scores to classics such as “Halloween,” “They Live,” “Prince Of Darkness,” and “Escape From New York.”
Tumblr media
Claire Mack as Tina
“What intrigued me most about directing this film was the idea of fear of the unknown,” said Mike Sargent. “The idea that there is something malevolent waiting for us in the darkness that we can’t see but we know is there. I also think we live in a world where we often wonder how people could commit some of the evil that they do. So, when you put this together with the ability to work with two icons like Keith David and Bruce Davison… It’s literally a genre lover’s dream come true.”
From The Shadows won the Best Feature Award at The Horrorween Festival, was a finalist at The Stranger Days Horror Festival, is an official selection of the Phobia Film Festival in Missouri and The Port Of Fear Film Festival, Kenosha, WI.

The Staples Singer's Respect Yourself Gets A Lyric Video Decades Later & New Box Set
Tumblr media
The Staple Singer's "Respect Yourself" gets a lyric video decades later as a new box set is being prepared for release this month. The group consisting of father Pops Staples and daughters Cleotha, Yvonne and Mavis were gospel and soul stars of the '60s and '70s. "Respect Yourself" was their signature commercial hit that happened during their time on Stax Records. Luther Ingram and Mack Rice wrote the song in 1971 after the Civil Rights Movement with the idea that Black people needed to embrace self-empowerment. The video has images of the movement with ones of the current Black Lives Matters protests. The visual is coming out right before the release of a seven-CD box set celebrating The Staple Singers and their time on Stax Records. Come Go With Me: The Stax Collection spans 1968-1974 and comes out November 13th. The collection was released earlier this year digitally and on vinyl. All six of their Stax albums have been remastered and the seventh CD is live recordings, non-album singles and the 1972 Wattstax music festival. There is a booklet of archival photos and liner notes from curator Levon Williams and writer Dr. Langston Wilkins. The box set is available for pre-order now and the digital and vinyl formats are in stock.

Jane Foster is Important 4/?
From the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and beaming out across all of space and time, this is Star Talk, where science and pop culture collide.
Welcome to the Hall of the Universe. I’m your host, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, your personal astrophysicist, and tonight we are proud to host world-renowned astrophysicist, the author of the Foster Theory that changed the face of modern science, recent Nobel laureate in Physics, and the only human being we know of who has traversed a wormhole and lived to tell about it, Dr. Jane Foster for a round table discussion on the practical applications of her discoveries in our world.
Also here to round out the discussion is fellow wormhole expert Dr. John Mack, mostly because once I told him we were having Dr. Foster on, I couldn’t talk him out of coming.
Bonus: Thor, in the audience, is thrilled.

Agents of SHIELD S5E05 “Rewind” Easter Eggs
SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE EPISODE! FOR REAL!
So many more Easter eggs this week, some so obvious I probably shouldn’t have put them on here, but I couldn’t resist.
Added in a few edits!
That Bendeery English Ale.
I probably didn’t have to point this out. I don’t care. I think it’s cute that Nick Blood got his friend’s name on the show as a beer and that it gets to be such a big part of the episode where he returns.
Monkeys on the wall.
We all know how much Iain de Caestecker (and Fitz) love monkeys, so I appreciate that a monkey drawing is how he counted the days in prison.
News clippings.
Okay, so I didn’t get a good look at these, but I imagine they give us a good idea of just what the world thinks of SHIELD right now. I would hope, if someone was able to get a good look at them, it might give us a hint at what happened to the SHIELD agents that weren’t taken, like Agent Piper.
2091.
The year to which the SHIELD agents are sent. In Marvel comics, Earth-2091 is a part of the multiverse where villains run things. There are no heroes. Sounds bleak. Maybe heroes from out of nowhere could change things.
Alien writing.
There looked to be a few different kinds of writing in Enoch’s house, and I didn’t recognize them because I really don’t have the memory for knowing all of the aliens Marvel has had unique alphabets for in the comics. I will say that some of the characters looked like the Skrull alphabet, which isn’t surprising since they’ve been using the Skrull alphabet with the Kree maps since season one. (With a military leader coldly killing those working under her though, I can’t help but wonder if the show is laying the seeds for the Skrulls for the Captain Marvel movie.)
Polly and Robin.
They were in the press release, so, probably not a shock, but it looks like Robin did (as most theorized) inherit her father’s ability to see the future. It’s weird that she inherited his ability, or a variation of it, since Inhumans don’t usually do that. I’ll point out here, though it’s not an Easter egg, that 74 years later, Robin could still be left out there in what’s left of Earth, still making prophecies and getting True Believers to fight the good fight.
The Lighthouse.
So, the space station gets its name from a Lighthouse base in the comics used by the Avengers for a handful of issues, but it gets its name from an actual Lighthouse on Earth. You all caught that the doors to the bunker are the same as the doors we see open in space, I’m sure.
“The universe doesn’t want anything.”
Jemma said it first, Hunter. Fitz didn’t really listen to her either.
Also, did anyone catch Hunter telling Fitz “Don’t die out there?” Not something I caught, but I saw a couple of people mention it on twitter!
“You have to save them.”
When Robin tells Fitz he isn’t on the list because he’s supposed to save them, she holds up a picture she drew with one person stabbed and four more standing above them. It kind of looks like when May and Jemma saved one of Kasius’ slaves while Sinara and a guard looked on, no? It’s possible it’s an image yet to come, but that’s what popped into my head first.
Fitzy.
I don’t think anyone has called him that since Jemma said “Dr. Fitzy” in season one. Nice that only those who are close to him use it.
Fitz’s case.
It might have slipped notice for some, but in addition to the weapons and Mack’s shotgun axe that Fitz hides away, he also tucks one of Coulson’s hands in there. Hopefully, the one with the shield and plenty of weapons.
@biochemmonkey said: Three of Coulson’s hand! And they are correct! So, hopefully, Coulson has plenty of options for help now!
Can we also all agree that being cryogenically frozen basically makes Fitz Captain America at this point? Fitting since Jemma has been Peggy Carter for years now.
And I know I don’t have to point out the Star Wars reference for the nerd crowd. I loved it!
@xmindzeyex said: Enochs a WATCHER 😱🔥 I think he’s definitely the show’s version of a Watcher, especially since the MCU has shown they exist in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The tourists who believe travel restrictions don’t apply to them
(CNN) — As pandemic quarantines go, this might be the best: sprawling on a hotel balcony overlooking azure Caribbean waters as you bake gently in the sun.
But it isn’t enough for some.
The past month has seen a slew of high-profile cases of tourists getting in trouble for breaking the rules while on a sun-and-sand vacation.
In December, Skylar Mack, an American student, was jailed for two months when she flew to the Cayman Islands and, instead of quarantining for two weeks at her hotel as the law obliged her to do, popped out two days later to attend a jet ski competition in which her boyfriend was competing.
In January, former British beauty queen and model Zara Holland and her boyfriend Elliott Love quarantined at her four-star hotel in Barbados for the required five days, before taking a second PCR test, as is required for travelers from high risk countries. So far, so good — except that when Love’s second test came back positive, rather than face further quarantine, the couple made a dash to the airport to try and catch a flight home.
Then there was the British couple, again in Barbados, who tried to spice up self-isolation by inviting a local resident over for sex (she was caught climbing over the hotel fence), and the Jamaican tourist who popped out of his hotel quarantine for a soft drink — and has ended up doing jail time.
Staying put in the sun seems like the easiest thing anyone’s been asked to do so far in the pandemic — so why are people breaking the rules?
‘Switching off’
Tumblr media
Countries around the world have implemented travel restrictions. Shown here: a testing center in Rome.

“Whenever people are presented with an extremely frightening scenario, previous research has shown that they switch off,” says clinical psychologist Bhavna Jani-Negandhi, who believes that health warnings should be at an “optimal level for people to take notice.”
In the case of, say, the harmful effects of smoking, warnings can be tailored up or down, to increase the chance of people taking note. But with regulations that need to be kept at a certain level to protect the local population, it’s not possible to beat about the bush.
In the pandemic, says Jani-Negandhi, “facts cannot be tailored. It seems that some people are behaving in a manner that would suggest they are switching off to the facts — believing that it will not happen to them and that only the most vulnerable are at risk.”
What’s more, according to one travel industry expert, the lack of coherency on travel restrictions across the globe doesn’t help.
“There’s no consistency, and travelers are being badly misled by the fact that there are no global rules,” says Paul Charles, Virgin Atlantic’s former director of communications who now runs his own PR consultancy, The PC Agency, and has become something of a thorn in the UK government’s side over its regular flip-flopping of travel regulations.
Charles has a vested interest in getting the travel industry back up and running, of course; but he believes a global approach, led by the G20 countries, would be the ideal way forward.
He says that a “global consistent testing program, so that everybody could be tested on departure with high-quality results within 30 minutes” would transform the way we are currently traveling (or not).
However, in the meantime, he says, any restrictions have to be enforced for travelers to behave them.
“I think the rules have to be fully supported by law — in a pandemic, you have to have strict enforcement so you achieve the outcome of lower infection rates and lower deaths,” he says.
“That’s perhaps been one of the issues — governments haven’t backed up tougher rules with tougher enforcement. Economies around the world are being ruined because people are breaking the law, meaning tougher measures are being put in place for longer.”
‘It only takes one uncaring person’
Tumblr media

Strict enforcement is exactly what the Cayman Islands are going for. As far back as January 2020, “We began planning and preparing for what we expected to be the eventual arrival of the virus on our shores,” says Roy Tatum, Head of the Office of the Premier, Alden McLaughlin.
Early measures included bans on travel from affected countries, and additional screening of arrivals. But despite precautions, the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed in March. In response, the islands closed their borders and implemented a 14-day quarantine in government-controlled facilities for anyone entering the country, as well as implementing lockdowns and curfews, closing schools, and restricting access to care homes, hospitals, prisons and breaches.
The result? As of January 10, just 359 cases and two deaths during the entire pandemic.
“We have sacrificed much since the initial lockdown at the end of March, which has helped eliminate the virus within our local community,” says Tatum. “Today, people are able to live somewhat normal lives and many businesses have been able to open.
“The only way the virus is able to reinfect our community is if it arrives on our shores from the outside.”
But since “hundreds” of residents were prosecuted and fined for breaking the initial lockdown, there have been just seven potential quarantine breaches investigated, two of which have gone to court.
Skylar Mack was visiting her boyfriend, Vanjae Ramgeet, a Cayman Islands resident, when she fell foul of the law in November.
Allowed in as the partner of a resident, she should have quarantined for two weeks.
Instead, after just two days, she removed the tracking device that was making sure she stayed in one place, and joined her boyfriend at his jet ski event.
When police caught up with her, she was found to be not wearing a mask, and not social distancing.
Her initial sentence of four months in jail was halved on appeal in December. Ramgeet received an equal sentence.
But despite protestations from her family, who appealed to US President Donald Trump for help, and received a supportive tweet from his son, Eric, the authorities of the Cayman Islands — a self-governing British Overseas Territory — have not backed down.
“Should Covid-19 become widespread in our small community it would be potentially devastating,” says Tatum.
“We are talking about a disease that has the ability to kill people and destroy an economy. That the reason why anyone who deliberately flouts the important public health laws and regulations of our Islands that are in place to protect the wider population, should be subject to strict penalties.
“There also needs to be a deterrent to ensure people understand the seriousness of the virus and the importance of the public health law and regulations.
“It only takes one careless, uncaring person to move about our community to create serious health issues, including potential death by restarting community transmission.
“We have a small population and a close community that still treasures and respects our elders, who, as we all know, are very high risk.
“In addition, if the Cayman Islands had to go back into a lockdown situation, the effect on our local economy, and the impact on our children, elderly and indeed the broader population, would be considerable.”
‘You must be held accountable’
Tumblr media
Barbados is allowing tourism, but travelers must quarantine on arrival.
Shutterstock
So far this year, it’s Barbados that has hit the headlines for tourists behaving badly, as they flock to the Caribbean. Many of thse traditional alternative winter sun destinations are out of bounds due to closed borders, which perhaps explains the slew of offenders descending on the region.
When Elliott Love, ensconced in the plush beachside Sugar Bay hotel, tested positive, he and girlfriend Zara Holland cut off their quarantine wristbands and checked out.
They caught a taxi to the airport and attempted to board a plane for the nine-hour flight back to the UK, knowing that the new UK variant is thought to be up to 70% more transmissible.
They were arrested as they went through security on December 29. Holland was given a $12,000 (US$5,900) fine, instead of a nine-month prison sentence, and was bailed for an undisclosed amount. Love — who was tried several days later, when he was no longer testing positive for the virus — was fined $8,000 ($4,000).
Neither Holland or the couple’s lawyer responded to a request for comment.
But they’re not the only tourists behaving badly in Barbados. On January 1, Swiss national Ismail Elbagli was fined $6,000 (US$3,000) when he left the hotel where he was quarantining, having tested positive.
Elbagli argued that his wife had received a call confirming a negative test that morning, and assumed it covered both of them. His fine was reduced from $8,000 in light of the circumstances.
In reaction to social media outcry that white tourists were being fined, while the only Black rule-breaker was jailed, Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes told the court that prison terms were a last resort, if paying a fine was not an option.
Neither the Barbados tourist board nor the government were available to comment on the restrictions.
However, Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Kenneth George has laid the blame for the island’s increasing case numbers partially at the door of rule-breaking tourists.
And in a video posted to Facebook shortly before Holland’s trial, Prime Minister Mia Mottley said: “We are very clear that on those persons who are visiting us, and to the extent that anyone is breaching our protocols, the government of Barbados through the Covid Monitoring Unit will take the necessary action for any visitors.
“We believe that by far the majority of them are compliant, but the handful who have chosen to ignore our mores, ignore our customs, ignore our laws and guidelines… you must be held accountable.”
Why one traveler broke the rules
Tumblr media
One traveler broke the UK lockdown to travel to Venice in June.

So what’s going on in the heads of people when they break the law when traveling?
For one rule-breaker, it was merely the idea of seeing how far they could go.
The UK resident, who requested to remain anonymous for fear of losing his job, told CNN he traveled from London to Venice for a vacation in June while the UK was still in lockdown and all but essential travel was banned.
“It was at the end, when lockdown was about to be lifted, and the news was saying how people are booking holidays and everything was getting booked up. I thought, I want to travel, but not with the crowds — when it’s still quiet,” he says.
“I’d seen images of famous landmarks being empty, so it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
At the time, Italy was allowing travelers from the UK, so he was breaking no rules on arrival, even though he was on departure. “I didn’t see it as breaking the rules too much — I was thinking for myself, basically,” he says.
“Italy was more safe at that point than the UK, so by going, Italy was more at risk — but they were the ones with the open borders.”
He flew via Dublin, which was locked down at the time, but allowing transit passengers.
“But I had a couple of hours between flights and out of curiosity wanted to test what happened,” he says.
So instead of staying in the airport, as he was obliged to do, he went outside — and nobody stopped him.
“I was looking for a bus to the city center to see if there was time to get a Guinness. But there was no shuttle, and with nothing running I didn’t want to spend too much money on Ubers.”
The UK traveler doesn’t see his infractions in the same light as those travelers to the Caribbean who he calls “bad” and “irresponsible.”
But he says that one thing that made him feel comfortable with traveling when he shouldn’t, was seeing footage of travelers arriving in the UK at the start of lockdown. The UK never closed its borders (and has only recently stopped arrivals from countries exposed to the new South African variant); but when Passenger Locator Forms and then quarantine were introduced, travelers were filmed arriving, clearly unaware of the restrictions.
“That’s why I felt pretty safe [breaking the rules],” he says.
He also says that on return to the UK’s Stansted airport, he was not asked for his Passenger Locator Form, or told to quarantine for 14 days, as he was obliged to do at that point. He did do so, though says that a couple of days afterward, quarantine restrictions were lifted so he ventured out.
Psychologist Bhavna Jani-Negandhi says his behavior is understandable.
“When people see others break the rules, then they could wonder why different rules apply and they might try getting away with it,” she says.
But for some, arriving in countries where the travel restrictions are enforced by the law may come as a sharp surprise.

LUCY, DESI & THE WHITING GIRLS
July 30, 1955
Tumblr media
On July 30, 1955, TV Guide (volume 3, number 31, issue 122) featured Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Barbara and Margaret Whiting, stars of “Those Whiting Girls” (1955).
Tumblr media
The cover photograph of the Arnaz’s and the Whitings was credited to Charles Rhodes. During the 1940s, Rhodes was photographer for Fawcett Publications and often photographed movie star Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
This is Lucille Ball’s sixth national TV Guide cover out of a total of 39. A little more than two years earlier, she was on the first national edition with her newborn son, Desi.
Tumblr media
“Those Whiting Girls” was a Desilu-produced summer replacement series that premiered on July 4, 1955. A second series of the situation comedy was aired during the summer of 1957.  The cover was symbolic of the Whiting Girls taking over “I Love Lucy’s” Monday night time slot on CBS while they were on hiatus.
Tumblr media
The series was written by Bob Carroll and Madelyn Pugh, the “I Love Lucy” writers. “I Love Lucy” director James V. Kern helmed the premiere and one other episode.
Tumblr media
The Whitings were pop and country singers although Margaret was more interested in acting than her sister Barbara. Their father is composer Richard A. Whiting. Margaret was the inspiration for his classic song "On the Good Ship Lollipop."
Tumblr media
The only other actor to appear in all 26 episodes of “Those Whiting Girls” was Mabel Albertson, who played their mother, Eleanor. She is best remembered by TV viewers as Darrin Stephens’ mother on “Bewitched” (1964-71). Her first appearance on “Bewitched” was aired just four days before her only episode of “The Lucy Show.”  In 1956 she had appeared with Lucille Ball in the film Forever Darling. Her brother, Jack Albertson, appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Bon Voyage” (ILL S5;E13) the same time as Forever Darling was in movie theatres.
Tumblr media
In 1957, Jerry Paris (later of “The Dick Van Dyke Show”) appeared in 13 episodes as the Whitings’ accompanist, Artie. He later directed a couple of episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” including the most famous, “Lucy Meets the Burtons” (HL S3;E1) in 1970, but was not compatible with Lucille Ball and dismissed before his contract was up.
In 1955, Beverly Long played the recurring role of Daisy Dunbar, the girls’ best friend.
Over the two seasons, “I Love Lucy” cast members Norma Varden, Herb Vigran, and Maxine Semon also appeared on the show.
The episode listed in this TV Guide was “The Carnival Incident’ (S1;E5) on August 1, 1955. In it, Barbara learns a lesson in showmanship at the campus carnival. When her boy friend persuades her into serving as the lure who gets dunked when baseball throwers hit the target, she tries to get sister Margaret to take her place. Margaret sings "Meet Me at the Station."
Tumblr media
The show was sponsored by Proctor and Gamble, General Foods, and Max Factor.
Tumblr media
When “The Handcuffs” (ILL S2;E4) was re-run at the end of season 4 in 1955, Lucy and Desi (as themselves), standing in the Hollywood hotel room set, tell the TV audience they are going on vacation for the summer (“13 weeks, to be exact” Lucille says) and reminds them to tune in to the new Desilu show “Those Whiting Girls” starring Margaret Whiting and her sister Barbara, which filled their time slot during the summer.
Tumblr media
Much later, the series was mentioned by Desi Arnaz Jr. on a February 1976 episode of “Saturday Night Live” on NBC.
Tumblr media
Over the masthead is a headline that teases an article about the Arthur Godfrey scandal during 1955. The Mariners were a four-piece all-male racially integrated group (two white and two African American members). Arthur Godfrey hired them, and they were regulars on his radio show and later his television shows for several years.The presence of the integrated Mariners brought complaints from Southern politicians and Southern CBS affiliates, which Godfrey publicly and scathingly rebuffed.  Despite this, Godfrey summarily fired the group in 1955. The Mariners then guested on other shows and appeared on New York radio, but with diminishing popularity.
Tumblr media
Another inside article was “The Rise and Fall of Mr. Peepers” (aka Wally Cox). Cox was one of Lucille Ball’s favorite performers and appeared on several episodes of “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
The cover also promoted (in a corner banner) a contest to win a role on a television show!  The winner would play Dr. Tim Watson in “Dr. Hudson’s Secret Journal” for at least three episodes. Entrants had to be male (sorry ladies) and between the ages of 17 and 21 (sorry Dad). The role eventually went to Joe Walker, who appeared on the medical series in late 1956 and early 1957. This was his only screen credit.  Young actor Harvey Grant appeared on one episode of the series in 1955, just before playing Kenneth Hamilton, Lucy Ricardo’s dance partner on the S.S. Constitution. Sammy Ogg, who played one of Lucy’s terrible Hudson twins, was also in a 1956 episode. Coincidentally, Jerry Paris of “Those Whiting Girls” played a doctor on the show. The cast also included “The Lucy Show” actors Vito Scotti and Max Showalter.
Tumblr media
The back cover featured a message from Ted Mack, the host of “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour.”

The Pilot (Doctor Who S10E01)
Tumblr media
Today Drew is forced to watch and recap “The Pilot”, the first episode of Doctor Who’s tenth series, which is also the final series of Doctor Who he’ll be discussing for this blog. The Doctor’s settled into an easy life as a professor at a university, but his teaching career is cut short when a young woman named Bill enters his life and he gets dragged into some interstellar drama taking place between her and her girlfriend. Can the Doctor get to the bottom of all of this? Can Bill handle the extraordinary world she’s stumbled into? Who’s going to grade all of the Doctor’s papers while he’s away?
Keep reading to find out…
Eli, as always, you’ve knocked it out of the park with your latest recap! I’ve always had some fond memories of this episode, mainly because I really like imaging the sorts of shenanigans Sophia would get up to in a cloister, and the running joke of her having a steady stream of best friends who either die, get put in a home or move in with family. I agree that the B plot was really wacky, but I enjoyed Rose and Blanche taking the law into their own hands in the search for vigilante justice. I personally think the next episode is a real slam dunk, and I hope you enjoy it! For now, though, I’ve got one more series of Who to get through, and it’s time to get started!
Buttocks tight!
Episode directed by Lawrence Gough and written by Steven Moffat
We start off on Nardole, who’s whirring like a robot for some reason, escorting a young woman (Pearl Mackie) into a fancy office. The office has all sorts of interesting things in it, like a desk atop which sits headshots of Dr. Professor River Song and Susan Foreman (the Doctor’s granddaughter) and a jar full of old sonic screwdrivers. Oh, also, the TARDIS, sporting an ‘out of order’ sign, is sitting in the corner. The young woman is about to inspect some of the screwdrivers when she’s startled by the Doctor shredding on his guitar. He introduces us to the woman as Bill Potts, and we find out a few key details. This office is at a university, and the Doctor is posing as a professor who gives really bitchin’ lectures. Bill isn’t a student at this university, instead working in the school’s cafetorium. Oh, also, Bill is gay as hell, and not in the lame, queerbaiting Clara/Jane Austen way the show tried to pull off in previous series. Despite not being a student, she’s made a habit out of sitting in on the Doctor’s lectures, and the Doctor wants to know why. Bill does a bit of fat-shaming about a girl she used to have a crush on instead of explaining why she’s sitting in, before finally admitting she just likes the Doctor’s lectures. Bill wants to know why she’s being singled out here, since lots of people sit in on the lectures, and the Doctor explains that he liked the way she seemed to get excited about things she didn’t understand instead of getting frustrated. Bill turns the tables and asks the Doctor a question of her own; he’s been working at this university to 50 – 70 years (depending on who you ask) and she doesn’t exactly understand what it is he’s supposed to be teaching. The university just sort of lets him do whatever he wants, and he’s cool with that. He makes a crack about Bill’s career as a french-fry gourmet and she’s ready to get the heck out of there, but then the Doctor eagerly offers to be her private tutor despite her not being a student.
After the credits, we get a montage of the Doctor lecturing while Bill whips up some mean fries and then sitting in on the Doctor’s lecture. At the allotted time, she meets the Doctor for their tutoring session. Bill talks with her foster mom and meets a cute lady with a weird eye, before eventually catching a glimpse of Nardole and the Doctor running off somewhere together. She follows them and winds up in a creepy basement, where she overhears Nardole chastises the Doctor for getting involved with her. Bill makes some noise and almost gets discovered, but manages to sneak out while Nardole and the Doctor are doing whatever they’re doing. Back outside, she catches sight of the cutie she met in the club. She asks about the young woman with the star-shaped defect in her eye. Bill picks up on the woman’s distress, and she asks her to join her somewhere. The woman admits she’s not a fan of London and wants to leave it, and says Bill might be able to join her. She takes Bill to look at a puddle which shouldn’t exist; it hasn’t rained in a week, but the puddle hasn’t dried up.
The young woman, Heather, asks Bill to study her reflection in the puddle. At first Bill doesn’t get what all this is about, but then she realizes her reflection is somehow wrong. Heather promptly dips, much to Bill’s disappointment, but promises to see her again. On the other side of the puddle, a spooky voice refers to one of the girls as the Pilot, and says a link has been established. Later on, Bill gets the Doctor a rug for Christmas and the two talk about Bill’s dead mother. At home, Bill gets passive-aggressed by her foster mom, who suddenly finds a box of pictures of Bill’s mother that no one noticed before. Surprise, surprise, Bill catches sight of the Doctor in one of the pictures. At the start of the new term, Bill seeks out Heather and finds her staring at that weird puddle again. Heather asks Bill to study her reflection again in the creepiest way possible and she promises not to disappear on her again, but she’s gone when Bill gets close to the puddle. Unbeknownst to Bill, Heather is stuck on the other side of the puddle and she doesn’t look happy.
Bill confides in the Doctor about Heather and all her oddities, and that weird puddle. The Doctor runs off to investigate, and Bill’s hot on his trail. She finds him studying the puddle, and he knows there’s something off about the reflection, too. The puddle is reflecting their images, but the reflection isn’t reversed the way it should be. The Doctor figures out that the water isn’t reflecting them at all, but mimicking them. He finds some scorch marks nearby, and tries to get Bill out of the splash zone. Whatever’s living in the puddle has plans of its own, though, and begins a pursuit. She thinks her foster mom is in the shower, but then she calls from a bar. So who’s taking a shower in Bill’s bathroom? Well, no one, it turns out, despite it sure seeming like someone’s in there. Bill inspects the water running down the shower drain, and sees Heather’s weird-ass eye glaring back at her. She runs to consult with the Doctor, but before she can reach him a sopping wet Heather appears behind her. Heather’s being weirder than normal, though, and is only mimicking everything Bill says to her. Also, it seems that she’s producing the cascade of water dripping off her all by herself, and Bill comes to the conclusion that Heather is some sort of drowned ghost.
Bill runs inside and makes it to the Doctor’s office, but Heather Alex Macks her way under the door as a puddle. The Doctor takes Bill inside the TARDIS to keep Heather’s moist hands off her, and, after a moment, Bill gets her first view at the inside of the blue box. Heather begins to attack the TARDIS, so the Doctor takes off and he, Bill and Nardole, who just got out of the shitter, wind up in that creepy basement from before. The basement holds a super secret vault that the Doctor’s been guarding all these years, and the Doctor thinks Heather is after whatever’s inside. Bill thinks that’s farfetched, since the vault’s been here for half a century and Heather’s only just turned up, but the Doctor doesn’t give a lot of credence to coincidence.
Heather appears and shrieks after them as they run into the TARDIS, which makes the Doctor pretty sure she’s after them and not what’s in the vault. The Doctor wants to see how far Heather will go to reach them, so he takes the TARDIS all the way to Australia. Bill’s struggling with all of this jumping around, and the Doctor does his best to help her cope. The Doctor gives her the lowdown on him being an alien and why the TARDIS looks like a police box, but this is interrupted as Heather abruptly appears. Everyone heads back into the TARDIS, and this time the Doctor takes it to the other end of the universe and millions of years into the future. Surprise, Bill, this thing’s a time machine, too! Bill soaks in her first steps on an alien planet, while Nardole wonders if Heather actually wants to hurt them. The Doctor’s pretty sure that’s a safe bet, as most of the things he encounters are dangerous. The Doctor does some lightning fast deduction, and guesses that the scorch marks around the puddle are from an alien ship taking off. The puddle that got left behind is some kind of space engine oil, but it’s intelligent, somehow. Heather has a desire to leave wherever she is, and when she looked into the puddle it recognized her as a pilot that could use its abilities to bop around the universe. It sucked her in and turned her into whatever she is now.
Bill glances at a nearby puddle, and Heather pops right out of it and tries to suck her in. The Doctor manages to get her into the TARDIS, and decides to really test her limits by taking the TARDIS through the deadliest fire in the universe. He tosses Nardole his own sonic screwdriver and tasks him with running interference while he and Bill run out into a war zone. They run into a Dalek right after seeing Heather, and try to trick the Dalek into blowing Heather up. Heather takes the Dalek’s blast like it’s nothing, just as a different Dalek starts chasing Nardole. Bill and the Doctor are cornered by a Dalek, but this Dalek is actually just another imitation generated by Heather. The Doctor points out that Heather could have killed them with the Dalek’s weapon, and implores her to simply leave them in peace. She won’t go, though, and Bill remembers that in her last exchange with Heather she promised that she wouldn’t leave without her. That last thought is still in Heather’s mind, and it’s compelling her to track Bill down and take her along on whatever journey she has planned.
The Doctor says Heather isn’t chasing Bill so much as she’s offering her an invitation, and that Bill has to release Heather from her promise. Bill does, and she and Heather share a moment despite the Doctor’s urging. Bill holds Heather’s hands, and Heather shows her the splendor of the universe as she sees it now. The Doctor says this is all a lure to get Bill to join her, and Bill finally manages to break free of it as she and Heather say goodbye to each other. Bill says she’s alright, but Nardole notices she’s crying; Bill says she doesn’t think they’re her tears.
Back at the university, Bill copes with giving up Heather’s offer to see the whole of space and time. The Doctor says they probably won’t see her again, and that Bill needs to forget about her time in the TARDIS. He tries to pull yet another memory wipe on her, but Bill’s watched some movies in her day and knows this kind of stuff when she sees it. She refuses to let the Doctor make her forget the only exciting thing that’s ever happened to her, but he’s set on making her forget. Bill asks him to put himself in her shoes and imagine what it would feel like to have someone steal his memories from him, and that does the trick. He sends her away, memories intact. The pictures of River and Susan, not to mention the TARDIS itself, all seem pretty insistent that he take Bill under his wing, but he insists that he’s made a promise to stay and guard the vault, and he’s going to keep it.
Bill, still thrilled and remembering her adventure, runs off for home, but finds the Doctor and the TARDIS in her path. He says that it’s a big universe, but maybe they’ll be able to find Heather again. He says what the hell and invites Bill to see space and time with him, and she leaps at the chance.
The End
~~~~~
I really liked this one! I thought it was a great introduction for Bill as a companion, and it’s especially great to have a queer woman of color as the Doctor’s companion. I like how spunky and curious Bill is, and I’m excited to learn more about her and how she’ll hold up under the stress of travelling with the Doctor as the series progresses. I’m wondering if Heather will be this series’ Bad Wolf, or if the vault is going to take that spot. Maybe both? Who knows! I don’t want to shit on Clara any more than I already have, but I have to say it’s very refreshing to see the Doctor with a new companion (or companions, I guess, since Nardole is apparently sticking around). I felt like the Doctor’s more relaxed, more fun personality really shone in this episode, and I’m loving Peter Capaldi as the Doctor more and more. David Tennant is still my favorite, but Capaldi’s wormed himself into my heart and if I had to assign rankings I would confidently declare him to be my second favorite Doctor so far. I feel like we’ve gone on a real progression with him, and seeing him transform into the Doctor he is today after starting out so gruff and rough is a real treat. I wish we got to found out why the bit of alien oil had been left behind, or if it was an accident or what, and I’m still not sure what’s up with Nardole. I guess he’s got a robot body? Could the Doctor not salvage his real body after Hydroflax’s body snatched up his head? I don’t know. Matt Lucas is a lot of fun to watch, though, so I’m willing to enjoy the ride with him.
I give “The Pilot” QQQQ on the Five Q Scale.
Tune in soon as Eli gets a big ol’ blast from the past with his recap of the next episode of The Golden Girls, “Mrs. George Devereaux”, and after that I’ll post my recap of the next episode of Doctor Who, “Smile”.
Until then, as always, thank you for reading, thank you for dripping and thank you for being One of Us!
Born in Los Angeles, California, Shearer began his career as a child actor. From 1969 to 1976, Shearer was a member of The Credibility Gap, a radio comedy group. Following the breakup of the group, Shearer co-wrote the film Real Life with Albert Brooks and started writing for Martin Mull's television series Fernwood 2 Night. He was a cast member on Saturday Night Live on two occasions, between 1979–80, and 1984–85. Shearer co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap, a satirical rockumentary, which became a cult hit. In 1989, Shearer joined the cast of The Simpsons; he provides voices for numerous characters, including Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert and more. Shearer has appeared in several films, including A Mighty Wind and The Truman Show, has directed two, Teddy Bears' Picnic and The Big Uneasy, and has written three books. Since 1983, Shearer has been the host of the public radio comedy/music program Le Show, a hodgepodge of satirical news commentary, music, and sketch comedy. Shearer has won a Primetime Emmy Award, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the radio category, and has received several other Emmy and Grammy Award nominations. He has been married to singer-songwriter Judith Owen since 1993. He is currently "artist in residence" at Loyola University, New Orleans. Shearer was born December 23, 1943 in Los Angeles, the son of Dora Warren (née Kohn) (d. 2008), a bookkeeper, and Mack Shearer.[2] His parents were Jewish immigrants from Austria and Poland.[3][4] Starting when Shearer was four years old, he had a piano teacher whose daughter worked as a child actress. The piano teacher later decided to make a career change and become a children's agent, as she knew people in the business through her daughter's work. The teacher asked Shearer's parents for permission to take him to an audition. Several months later, she called Shearer's parents and told them that she had gotten Shearer an audition for the radio show The Jack Benny Program. Shearer received the role when he was seven years old.[5] He described Jack Benny as "very warm and approachable [...] He was a guy who dug the idea of other people on the show getting laughs, which sort of spoiled me for other people in comedy."[6] Shearer said in an interview that one person who "took him under his wing" and was one of his best friends during his early days in show business was voice actor Mel Blanc, who voiced many animated characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Barney Rubble.[7] Shearer made his film debut in the 1953 film Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, in which he only had a small part. Later that year, he made his first big film performance in The Robe.[6] Throughout his childhood and teenage years he worked in television, film, and radio.[6] In 1957, Shearer played the precursor to the Eddie Haskell character in the pilot episode of the television series Leave It to Beaver. After the filming, Shearer's parents said they did not want him to be a regular in a series. Instead they wanted him to just do occasional work so that he could have a normal childhood. Shearer and his parents made the decision not to accept the role in the series if it was picked up by a television network.[6] Shearer attended UCLA as a political science major in the early 1960s and decided to quit show business to become a "serious person".[5] However, he says this lasted approximately a month, and he joined the staff of the Daily Bruin, UCLA's school newspaper, during his first year.[5] and as editor of the college humor magazine (Satyr) including the June 1964 parody, Preyboy [8] He also worked as a newscaster at KRLA, a top 40 radio station in Pasadena, during this period. According to Shearer, after graduating, he had "a very serious agenda going on, and it was 'Stay Out of the Draft'."[5] He attended graduate school at Harvard University for one year and worked at the state legislature in Sacramento. In 1967 and 1968, he was a high school teacher, teaching English and social studies. He left teaching following "disagreements with the administration."[5] From 1969 to 1976, Shearer was a member of The Credibility Gap, a radio comedy group that included David Lander, Richard Beebe and Michael McKean.[9] The group consisted of "a bunch of newsmen" at KRLA 1110, "the number two station" in Los Angeles.[6] They wanted to do more than just straight news, so they hired comedians who were talented vocalists. Shearer heard about it from a friend so he brought over a tape to the station and nervously gave it to the receptionist. By the time he got home, there was a message on his answering machine asking, "Can you come to work tomorrow?"[6] The group's radio show was canceled in 1970 by KRLA and in 1971 by KPPC-FM, so they started performing in various clubs and concert venues.[5] While at KRLA, Shearer also interviewed Creedence Clearwater Revival for the Pop Chronicles music documentary.[10] In 1973, Shearer appeared as Jim Houseafire on How Time Flys, an album by The Firesign Theatre's David Ossman. The Credibility Gap broke up 1976 when Lander and McKean left to perform in the sitcom Laverne & Shirley.[5] Shearer started working with Albert Brooks, producing one of Brooks' albums and co-writing the film Real Life. Shearer also started writing for Martin Mull's television series Fernwood 2 Night.[5] In the mid-1970s, he started working with Rob Reiner on a pilot for ABC. The show, which starred Christopher Guest, Tom Leopold and McKean, was not picked up.[5] Career[edit] Saturday Night Live[edit] In August 1979, Shearer was hired as a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live, one of the first additions to the cast,[6] and an unofficial replacement for John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who were both leaving the show.[11] Al Franken recommended Shearer to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.[12] Shearer describes his experience on the show as a "living hell" and "not a real pleasant place to work."[11] He did not get along well with the other writers and cast members and states that he was not included with the cast in the opening montage (although he was added to the montage for latter episodes of the 1979-80 season) and that Lorne Michaels had told the rest of the cast that he was just a writer.[13] Michaels left Saturday Night Live at the end of the fifth season, taking the entire cast with him.[14] Shearer told new executive producer Jean Doumanian that he was "not a fan of Lorne's" and offered to stay with the show if he was given the chance to overhaul the program and bring in experienced comedians, like Christopher Guest. However, Doumanian turned him down, so he decided to leave with the rest of the cast.[15] When I left, Dick [Ebersol] issued a press release, saying "creative differences." And the first person who called me for a comment on it read me that and I blurted out, "Yeah, I was creative and they were different." —Harry Shearer[16] In 1984, while promoting the film This Is Spinal Tap, Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean had a performance on Saturday Night Live. All three members were offered the chance to join to the show in the 1984–1985 season. Shearer accepted because he was treated well by the producers and he thought the backstage environment had improved[11] but later stated that he "didn't realize that guests are treated better than the regulars."[17] Guest also accepted the offer while McKean rejected it, although he would join the cast in 1994. Dick Ebersol, who replaced Lorne Michaels as the show's producer, said that Shearer was "a gifted performer but a pain in the butt. He's just so demanding on the preciseness of things and he's very, very hard on the working people. He's just a nightmare-to-deal-with person."[18] In January 1985, Shearer left the show for good,[11] partially because he felt he was not being used enough.[16] Martin Short said Shearer "wanted to be creative and Dick [Ebersol] wanted something else. [...] I think he felt his voice wasn't getting represented on the show. When he wouldn't get that chance, it made him very upset."[19] Spinal Tap[edit] Shearer co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in Rob Reiner's 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap.[6] Shearer, Reiner, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest received a deal to write a first draft of a screenplay for a company called Marble Arch. They decided that the film could not be written and instead filmed a 20-minute demo of what they wanted to do.[11] It was eventually greenlighted by Norman Lear and Jerry Perenchio at Embassy Pictures.[11] The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard rock and heavy metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rockumentaries of the time. The three core members of the band Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel—were portrayed by McKean, Shearer and Guest respectively. The three actors play their musical instruments and speak with mock English accents throughout the film. There was no script, although there was a written breakdown of most of the scenes, and many of the lines were ad-libbed.[11] It was filmed in 25 days.[11] Shearer said in an interview that "The animating impulse was to do rock 'n' roll right. The four of us had been around rock 'n' roll and we were just amazed by how relentlessly the movies got it wrong. Because we were funny people it was going to be a funny film, but we wanted to get it right."[2] When they tried to sell it to various Hollywood studios, they were told that the film would not work. The group kept saying, "No, this is a story that's pretty familiar to people. We're not introducing them to anything they don't really know," so Shearer thought it would at least have some resonance with the public.[6] The film was only a modest success upon its initial release but found greater success, and a cult following, after its video release. In 2000, the film was ranked 29th on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy movies in American cinema[20] and it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[21] Shearer, Guest and McKean have since worked on several projects as their Spinal Tap characters. They released three albums: This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Break Like the Wind (1992) and Back From The Dead (2009).[22] In 1992, Spinal Tap appeared in an episode of The Simpsons called "The Otto Show".[23] The band has played several concerts, including at Live Earth in London on July 7, 2007. In anticipation of the show, Rob Reiner directed a short film entitled Spinal Tap.[24] In 2009, the band released Back from the Dead to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of the film.[25] The album features re-recorded versions of songs featured in This Is Spinal Tap and its soundtrack, and five new songs.[26][27] The band performed a one date "world tour" at London's Wembley Arena on June 30, 2009. The Folksmen, a mock band featured in the film A Mighty Wind that is also made up of characters played by Shearer, McKean and Guest – was the opening act for the show.[28] The Simpsons[edit] Shearer is also known for his prolific work as a voice actor on The Simpsons. Matt Groening, the creator of the show, was a fan of Shearer's work, while Shearer was a fan of a column Groening used to write.[29] Shearer was asked if he wanted to be in the series, but he was initially reluctant because he thought the recording sessions would be too much trouble.[29] He felt voice acting was "not a lot of fun" because traditionally, voice actors record their parts separately.[7] He was told that the actors would record their lines together[7] and after three calls, executive producer James L. Brooks managed to convince Shearer to join the cast.[2] Shearer's first impression of The Simpsons was that it was funny. Shearer, who thought it was a "pretty cool" way to work, found it peculiar that the members of the cast were adamant about not being known to the public as the people behind the voices.[6] Shearer provides voices for Principal Skinner, Kent Brockman, Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle, Scratchy, Kang, Dr. Marvin Monroe, Judge Snyder and many others.[30] He has described all of his regular characters' voices as "easy to slip into. [...] I wouldn't do them if they weren't easy."[29] Shearer modeled Mr. Burns's voice on the two actors Lionel Barrymore and Ronald Reagan.[31] Shearer says that Burns is the most difficult character for him to voice because it is rough on his vocal cords and he often needs to drink tea and honey to soothe his voice.[32] He describes Burns as his favorite character, saying he "like[s] Mr. Burns because he is pure evil. A lot of evil people make the mistake of diluting it. Never adulterate your evil."[33] Shearer is also the voice of Burns' assistant Smithers, and is able to perform dialogue between the two characters in one take. In the episode "Bart's Inner Child", Harry Shearer said "wow" in the voice of Otto, which was then used when Otto was seen jumping on a trampoline.[34] Ned Flanders had been meant to be just a neighbor that Homer was jealous of, but because Shearer used "such a sweet voice" for him, Flanders was broadened to become a Christian and a sweet guy that someone would prefer to live next to over Homer.[35] Dr. Marvin Monroe's voice was based on psychiatrist David Viscott.[36] Monroe has been retired since the seventh season because voicing the character strained Shearer's throat.[37] In 2004, Shearer criticized what he perceived as the show's declining quality: "I rate the last three seasons as among the worst, so season four looks very good to me now."[38] Shearer has also been vocal about "The Principal and the Pauper" (season nine, 1997) one of the most controversial episodes of The Simpsons. Many fans and critics reacted negatively to the revelation that Principal Seymour Skinner, a recurring character since the first season, was an impostor. The episode has been criticized by both Shearer and Groening. In a 2001 interview, Shearer recalled that after reading the script, he told the writers, "That's so wrong. You're taking something that an audience has built eight years or nine years of investment in and just tossed it in the trash can for no good reason, for a story we've done before with other characters. It's so arbitrary and gratuitous, and it's disrespectful to the audience."[39] Due to scheduling and availability conflicts, Shearer decided not to participate in The Simpsons Ride, which opened in 2008, so none of his characters have vocal parts and many do not appear in the ride at all.[40] In a 2010 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Shearer alluded that the reason he was not part of the ride was because he would not be getting paid for it.[41] Until 1998, Shearer was paid $30,000 per episode. During a pay dispute in 1998, Fox threatened to replace the six main voice actors with new actors, going as far as preparing for casting of new voices.[42] The dispute, however, was resolved and Shearer received $125,000 per episode until 2004, when the voice actors demanded that they be paid $360,000 an episode.[42] The dispute was resolved a month later,[43] and Shearer's pay rose to $250,000 per episode.[44] After salary re-negotiations in 2008, the voice actors received $400,000 per episode.[45] Three years later, with Fox threatening to cancel the series unless production costs were cut, Shearer and the other cast members accepted a 30 percent pay cut, down to just over $300,000 per episode.[46] On May 13, 2015, Shearer announced he was leaving the show. After the other voice actors signed a contract for the same pay, Shearer refused, stating it was not enough. Al Jean made a statement from the producers saying "the show must go on," but did not elaborate on what might happen to the characters Shearer voiced.[47] On July 7, 2015, Shearer agreed to continue with the show, on the same terms as the other voice actors.[48] Le Show and radio work[edit] "Because I don't do stand-up, radio has always been my equivalent, a place to stay in connection with the public and force myself to write every week and come up with new characters. Plus it's a medium that – having grown up with it and putting myself to sleep with a radio under my pillow [as a kid] – I love. No matter what picture you want to create in the listener's mind, a few minutes of work gets it done." —Harry Shearer[49] Since 1983, Shearer has been the host of the public radio comedy/music program Le Show. The program is a hodgepodge of satirical news commentary, music, and sketch comedy that takes aim at the "mega morons of the mighty media".[50] It is carried on many National Public Radio and other public radio stations throughout the United States.[51] Since the merger of SIRIUS and XM satellite radio services the program is no longer available on either.[52] The show has also been made available as a podcast on iTunes[53] and by WWNO. On the weekly program Shearer alternates between DJing, reading and commenting on the news of the day after the manner of Mort Sahl, and performing original (mostly political) comedy sketches and songs. In 2008, Shearer released a music CD called Songs of the Bushmen, consisting of his satirical numbers about former President George W. Bush on Le Show.[2] Shearer says he criticizes both Republicans and Democrats equally, and also says that "the iron law of doing comedy about politics is you make fun of whoever is running the place"[54] and that "everyone else is just running around talking. They are the ones who are actually doing something, changing people's lives for better or for worse. Other people the media calls 'satirists' don't work that way."[55] Since encountering satellite news feeds when he worked on Saturday Night Live, Shearer has been fascinated with the contents of the video that does not air. Shearer refers to these clips as found objects. "I thought, wow, there is just an unending supply of this material, and it's wonderful and fascinating and funny and sometimes haunting – but it's always good," said Shearer.[56] He collects this material and uses it on Le Show[57][58] and on his website.[59] In 2008, he assembled video clips of newsmakers from this collection into an art installation titled "The Silent Echo Chamber" which was exhibited at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut.[56] The exhibit was also displayed in 2009 at Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) in Valencia, Spain[60][61] and in 2010 at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center.[62] In 2006 Shearer appeared with Brian Hayes in four episodes of the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Not Today, Thank You, playing Nostrils, a man so ugly he cannot stand to be in his own presence.[63] He was originally scheduled to appear in all six episodes but had to withdraw from recording two due to a problem with his work permit.[64] On June 19, 2008, it was announced that Shearer would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the radio category.[65] The date of the ceremony where his star will be put in place has yet to be announced.[66] Further career[edit] Shearer performing in April 2009 In 2002, Shearer directed his first feature film Teddy Bears' Picnic, which he also wrote. The plot is based on Bohemian Grove, which hosts a three-week encampment of some of the most powerful men in the world. The film was not well received by critics. It garnered a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with all 19 reviews being determined as negative[67] and received a rating of 32 out of 100 (signifying "generally negative reviews") on Metacritic from 10 reviews.[68] In 2003, he co-wrote J. Edgar! The Musical with Tom Leopold, which spoofed J. Edgar Hoover's relationship with Clyde Tolson.[69] It premiered at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado and starred Kelsey Grammer and John Goodman.[70] In 2003, Shearer, Guest and McKean starred in the folk music mockumentary A Mighty Wind, portraying a band called The Folksmen. The film was written by Guest and Eugene Levy, and directed by Guest.[6] Shearer had a major role in the Guest-directed parody of Oscar politicking For Your Consideration in 2006. He played Victor Allan Miller, a veteran actor who is convinced that he is going to be nominated for an Academy Award.[71] He also appeared as a news anchor in Godzilla with fellow The Simpsons cast members Hank Azaria and Nancy Cartwright.[72] His other film appearances include The Right Stuff, Portrait of a White Marriage, The Fisher King, The Truman Show, EdTV and Small Soldiers.[73] Shearer has also worked as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times Magazine, but decided that it "became such a waste of time to bother with it."[55] His columns have also been published in Slate and Newsweek.[74] Since May 2005 he has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.[73] Shearer has written three books. Man Bites Town, published in 1993, is a collection of columns that he wrote for The Los Angeles Times between 1989 and 1992.[39] Published in 1999, It's the Stupidity, Stupid analyzed the hatred some people had for then-President Bill Clinton.[75] Shearer believes that Clinton became disliked because he had an affair with "the least powerful, least credentialed women cleared into his official compound."[39] His most recent book is Not Enough Indians, his first novel. Published in 2006, it is a comic novel about Native Americans and gambling.[73] Without the "pleasures of collaboration" and "spontaneity and improvisation which characterize his other projects", Not Enough Indians was a "struggle" for Shearer to write. He said that "the only fun thing about it was having written it. It was lonely, I had no deal for it and it took six years to do. It was a profoundly disturbing act of self-discipline."[2] Shearer has released five solo comedy albums: It Must Have Been Something I Said (1994), Dropping Anchors (2006), Songs Pointed and Pointless (2007), Songs of the Bushmen (2008) and Greed and Fear (2010).[76] His most recent CD, Greed and Fear is mainly about Wall Street economic issues, rather than politics like his previous albums. Shearer decided to make the album when he"started getting amused by the language of the economic meltdown – when 'toxic assets' suddenly became 'troubled assets,' going from something poisoning the system to just a bunch of delinquent youth with dirty faces that needed not removal from the system but just...understanding."[77] In May 2006, Shearer received an honorary doctorate from Goucher College.[78] #HarryShearer #ThisIsSpinalTap #JonHammond #Nashville #TVShow The Big Uneasy[edit] Shearer is the director of The Big Uneasy (2010), a documentary film about the impacts of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. Narrated by actor John Goodman, the film describes levee failures and catastrophic flooding in the New Orleans metropolitan area, and includes extended interviews with former LSU professor Ivor Van Heerden, Robert Bea, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and Maria Garzino, an engineer and contract specialist for the Los Angeles district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The film is critical of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its management of flood protection projects in Southern Louisiana.[79][80][81][82][83] Shearer draws on numerous technical experts to maintain that Hurricane Katrina's "...tragic floods creating widespread damage were caused by manmade errors in engineering and judgment."[84] Shearer's film currently has a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on twenty-three reviews by approved critics.[83] Personal life[edit] Shearer married Penelope Nichols in 1974. They divorced in 1977. He has been married to singer-songwriter Judith Owen since 1993.[2] In 2005, the couple launched their own record label called Courgette Records.[85] Shearer has homes in Santa Monica, California, the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, and London. He first went to New Orleans in 1988 and has attended every edition of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival since.[86] Shearer often speaks and writes about the failure of the Federal levee system which flooded New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, belittling the coverage of it in the mainstream media[87] and criticizing the role of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.[88][89] Prior to the DVD release of his film, The Big Uneasy, Shearer would hold screenings of the film at different venues and take questions from audience members " Identifier HarryShearerInterviewWithJonHammond Scanner Internet Archive HTML5 Uploader 1.6.3 Language English Publication date 2017-08-26 Usage Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Topics Harry Shearer, Nashville, New Orleans, NAMM Show, This is Spinal Tap, Podcast, Jack Benny, The Simpsons, Rock Band, Jon Hammond, Cable Access TV, MNN TV, Channel 1, #HarryShearer #HammondOrgan #Rocker
Time Period Quick Reference:
Courtesy the lovely Erin (@incre-et-painture) we now have a handy-dandy little reference to help us all “flow with the times” without having to struggle between either spending precious time researching or winging it and hoping for the best! She actually lived in England during the period in which our game is set, so if you have additional questions about the setting she’ll be happy to help you out--
Although keep in mind that this is an alternate universe. As such, specific individual facts and historical events may be different. So don’t worry about getting bogged-down in the details; after all, this is a world in which The Cold War was replaced by The Worldwide Witchunt Wars. There probably was no Cuban Missile Crisis; there may not have even been a Space Race! We’ve left particular historical details vague enough that we can tailor them to suit whatever plot-points we all decide to develop.
So just as with the timeline, view the following as a reference guideline, not a checklist to obey!
Technology:
This is probably the most important one for us, as unlike most Potterverse games we’re actually playing in a world where your character very well might have access to the sort of technology that we take for granted in our current lives -- albeit several generations older than what we’ve got on hand now!
Most computers operate using ethernet cords to connect to the internet, laptops weigh an extremely portable 52 pounds, basically, and camera phones are cutting edge technology. The pictures taken with them are notoriously grainy at this stage and definitely not the crystal clear video we’re used to.
Most mobile phones operate on a “top up” method where you pay for minutes. They’re called track phones in the U.K. Also, most people are paying per text message sent, but it’s still a popular method of communication. You can top up your minutes in most convenience stores and by calling into your provider’s number. There aren’t any smartphones, apps, and other things like that. Public payphones still exist, although they are fading out by this point.
Travel is done by taxi, bus, and tube. Lyft and Uber do not exist. Londoners love the Tube and definitely travel that way frequently. For frequent travelers, Oyster cards are refillable cards that are similar to the Metro cards we use in the US. In fact, 2004 was the first year that Oyster cards existed. They can also be used on the bus and train, but not on taxis.
Please also remember that trains are a popular method of travel for Europeans. They’re also very reliable and a great way to get around. (As for whether people would be comfortable sharing a carriage with someone who’s got stars by their eyes, well...)
Pop Culture: Sport
As much as it breaks my heart, Manchester United won the FA cup in 2004. (Mod Note: her Erin, maybe in this messed-up world West Ham isn’t a total lost cause? I mean, sport doesn’t have to have happened the same as it did in reality, and we’ve got so many crazy things going on here already -- wealthy Weasleys, werewolf-friendly Blacks, a living Regulus...stranger things could happen, right?)
For those of you interested in talking football, here are the league tables for that season. Please keep in mind that different teams are in different leagues so, if your character follows a team, make sure you know who they play. :)
Pop Culture: Telly
The Television lineup in Britain in real 2004-2005 contained the shows:
Little Britain
Spooks
Eastenders
Still Game
Dr. Who (the new series had just started, but the reruns were still extremely popular and well-loved by a majority of British people)
Casualty
The Doctors
Holby City
River City
Blue Peter
Strictly Come Dancing
And news is broadcast on the BBC News
For a comprehensive list, please see this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_programmes_broadcast_by_the_BBC
Please pay attention to the years listed for each program to make sure that it’s applicable...and feel free to make up shows of your own that might exist in this reality! Just keep in mind that TV in England was a much smaller, lower-budget, more contained entity than the overwhelming glut of channels going on in America.
Pop Culture: Music
This will be a painful trip for some of us. After all, I think we’d probably all rather forget that Kelis ever proclaimed that her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. However, it’s a sad fact that she did, and this is the time when it happened!
Now again, we are living in an alternate reality here, so feel free to make up other songs and singers and groups -- both mundane and magical; maybe the Weird Sisters and Celestina Warbeck don’t exist here (and maybe they do) but there are surely still some magical musicians (maybe some taking advantage of the “dangerous” aura their magic grants them, while others might try and downplay it) so please, let your imaginations run wild! Maybe this Brittany Spears never sang Toxic but rather Cursed...maybe this Goldie Lookin Chain wrote Wands Don’t Kill People, Rappers Do. Who knows, have fun! The following list is for reference so that you know what kind of music and what kind of bands (probably) exist in this world and this time. And, maybe, to give you all a trip -- pleasant or otherwise -- down nostalgia lane. Enjoy!
For the rest of 2004 in music in the real world, please go to this wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_in_British_music_charts
Random Stuff:
Since the standard closing time for a pub is 11 PM, that’s when “Needles” closes. There are after-hours nightclubs, and people probably go to them, but Needles does its last call at 10:45.
Prostitution is not illegal in Britain, but running a brothel is. Basically, a person can sell themselves, but you can’t sell other people. (I just feel like this is useful information.)
Gun Control Laws had banned both automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Rifles were still allowed for those with hunting permits.
Courtesy Millie @theinvisibleboi: 2004 is also the year Facebook launched (although at that point it would have still been restricted to school e-mail accounts) and the Olympics were held in Athens, in case anyone wanted to feel old! (Probably wix would not be allowed to compete...but if anyone wants to create some kind of controversial Olympics history or event for this world, or otherwise alter history to conform to to AU, please feel free!)
Again, please use this wonderful collection of data that Erin has so helpfully provided us with for as general reference, not uncompromising and stone-set facts that you must know, utilize, and memorize! None of us are expert historians and unless you do something really obvious like reference an iPhone or One Direction, we aren’t going to call you out on it -- especially when an “error” might just be a difference between this world and our own. This is just to help you get in the “vibe” of the time period, not information that you’ll be tested on later. So don’t panic, stay loose, and feel free to get creative!
Thanks once more to Erin for putting this together for all of us, and remember that if you have questions about anything else regarding England in 2005, please feel free to message her and she’ll help out as best she can!
GIMME SOME MUSIC PEOPLE
Alright guys so surprise! I need new music lmao/ I actually have a huge taste in music so like, don’t be shy to suggest something. :) I know my blog makes me seem the exact opposite. I only post about like, 5-10 bands. Especially All Time Low.
