Wanna know what I love about Linux? The customization. And I'm not just talking about Ricing. I can change the login sound on my computer to be anything I want, so I chose the Windows 95 startup sound because that shit's aesthetic. Brian Eno put his whole Roxy Mussy into that.
Also I changed my laptop's login sound to the very specific chime of an early 90s Macintosh computer.

When the Startup Manager displays, use the left or right arrow keys to cycle between hard drive options. Disk Utility can fix several disk problems, including the white screen on Mac. Use Disk Utility to verify or repair disks. Start the computer as normal and hold down the "Option" key as the computer starts. When your Mac finishes starting up, you should go to System Preferences and adjust some settings that were reset, such as time zone, display resolution, etc. This issue usually affects computers with more than one hard drive. When you hear the start-up chime a second time, release the keys.Īfter resetting the NVRAM, you may need to select the startup disk. Sometimes you need to restore the NVRAM to get your computer functioning again, reset the NVRAM by powering down the MacBook restart and immediately hold down the "Command-Option-P-R" keys simultaneously.

Mac Os Boot Disk Download
To install Mac OS:
Disk Doctor
Boot up with the CD-ROM or, if you have the system on floppydisks, the System Tools disk.
For instructions on how to boot from a CD-ROM, see ARCHIVED: On a Mac, how do I change my startup volume or boot from analternative volume, disc, or device?
To boot from a floppy disk, shut down the computer and insert theSystem Tools disk or the first installation disk. When you restart thecomputer, it should boot from the floppy.
Note: If you have downloaded a Net Install of System7.5.3 for an older computer from Apple, you should also download theNetwork Access disk image, so-called because it contains aSystem Folder and the minimum software needed to make anetwork connection. You will need Disk Copy to convert thedisk image into a boot-up floppy. Apple recommends you boot from sucha floppy before running a Net Install of System 7.5.3.
Run Disk First Aid on the volume on which you will beinstalling the Mac OS. In older versions of the system software, DiskFirst Aid is on the Disk Tools or System Tools disk, while in newerversions it is in a folder named Utilities on the CD-ROM.Newer Mac OS installers automatically check the disk as part of theinstallation process.
Double-click the installer program. In the Mac OS 7.6 through 9installers, you will need to click Continue on the firstscreen and then select the drive you want to install to on the secondscreen. For earlier installers, click OK in thedialog box telling you what you are about to do. If installing from aCD-ROM, make sure you select the volume on which you want the systemto be installed.
There are various types of installation from which to choose.Choose the method that best suits your situation. If you already haveMac OS 7.6 through 9 installed, the installers for these systems willdetect that and give you the options Reinstall andAdd/Remove. Other options are as follows:
Easy Install will install the default system (the systemfor that particular computer) and all printer software.
Custom Install allows you to specify a systemconfiguration other than the default. You can choose to install aversion configured for the particular Macintosh model you have or onethat will work with any model. You can also choose a minimal systemconfiguration that does not install some optional components of thesystem, or you can separately specify what networking software, multimedia support software, specific printers drivers, etc., toinstall.
Custom Remove allows you to remove selected systemcomponents from the system. Make sure the applications you are usingdon't require these components before removing them.
Clean Install creates a brand new SystemFolder. The old System Folder is renamedPrevious System Folder. For instructions on performingthis type of installation, consult ARCHIVED: In Mac OS 9.x and earlier, what is a clean system install, and how canI do it?
Once the installer has finished updating or installing youroperating system, restart your computer. You should then install anyupdates to the operating system; see ARCHIVED: For Mac OS X, how do I obtain and install system softwareupdates?

Mac Chimes of Death
Tumblr media
We’re all familiar with the Mac’s startup chime. While it has changed over the years, it has greeted users with its friendly tone for decades.
What you may not know is that for years, the Mac also came with a death sound, that would play when the machine was unable to properly boot.

some tips:
- when a webpage locks your computer up, its usually because of a "memory leak", or simply, the page keeps dumping information in your RAM, filling it up and eventually crashing your pc. commands to help you out of these pages as fast as possible:
WINDOWS:
alt + f4 closes the program.
ctrl + w closes the window (eg: if you had two chrome windows open, ctrlw would ony close one, while altf4 closes both).
windows key + r opens the run box. type "shutdown /p /f" without the quote marks. this translates as "shutdown, using the AHCI (power) shutdown, and force applications to close".
use an AHCI shutdown - eg: hold the power button down. when youre ready, turn the computer back on, wait for the beep (if there is one, otherwise just start as soon as your boot it), then tap f8 repeatedly until "advanced boot options appears". boot into "safe mode", and carry out a system scan. i would suggest NOT booting into networked mode. safe mode with command prompt is kind of advanced, so maybe avoid that too.
MACINTOSH (Intel/post-2006 confirmed, but PPC might use these):
cmd + q is like altf4 on windows; it Quits an application. its possible that either cmd + shift + q or cmd + option + q will Force Quit an application.
cmd + w is like ctrl + w on windows; it closes a window.
if you dont have it set in the mouse settings, ctrl + clicking brings up the context/"right click" menu.
pressing option can change some menu items. eg: option can change "Quit" to "Force Quit". this is useful for frozen or stalled applications.
ctrl + option + cmd + eject is like clicking shutdown in the menu BUT if someone else is logged in, it will still prompt for a password. if no one else is, it acts like a regular shutdown. there is no key-press for forced shutdown besides AHCI (power button) shutdown.
... AHCI shutdown.
please note that if you have a firmware password (eg: you have to type in a password BEFORE the login screen), then the below MAY not work unless you turn the firmware password off first.
also, some older macs will need their "install disks" if they cant run these commands natively and have been disconnected from the internet.
holding D on startup (or option-D if it doesnt work the first time) after the chime - if you have one - will boot into "Apple Hardware Diagnostics". THIS IS NOT A MALWARE SCAN. it will tell you if it detects issues physically. you can search the results for answers. THIS CAN TAKE A WHILE.
holding option on startup after the chime allows you to select what drive to boot from. most macs will have a recovery sector. more on this later. i think you can boot straight from a time machine drive, but im not sure. sometimes this takes a while to detect all your drives.
holding shift on startup boots you into safe mode. it acts like windows safe mode. may take a little longer than booting normally.
holding T on startup makes your mac act like a harddrive. connect it to another mac through firewire, thunderbolt2/3, or usb-c and it will mount like a regular drive. you can use this method to save files that havent been backed up.
holding cmd + r on startup will boot you into recovery mode. i mentioned this earlier. this mode allows you to: completely factory reset your mac, refresh from a backup (i think only time machine is supported here. other backups might have to be done after wiping the mac first, using its own software), use utilities like diskutil, and search Apples forums in a safe-mode-type environment.
holding cmd + option + p + r for about 5-8 seconds after the chime will cause the chime to sound again (warning: it will reset your macs volume! it might be loud so be careful) and reset the NVRAM/PRAM (same thing, different names). this can clear some issues. some Apple Settings will be reset to default in the process, such as screen brightness, keyboard brightness, energy saving behaviour, sound. if you keep holding the keys beyond the second chime, it will continue to reset and reboot. this has no lasting effect, and can actually help in some very rare cases.
for desktop macs: turn your pc off, unplug it from mains, then hold the power button for 10-30 seconds. let go, plug the mac back in and turn it on. this will reset the SMC. it is important that when youre pressing the button, the mac cannot actually turn on. what this does is pushes the charge all the way out of the system. other times you might so something similar are: with a windows (yeah! youll never see microsoft touting that you do it, but sometimes it helps), phones when you let them die completely before recharging them, fire/co alarms/detectors when you change the battery (its actually really healthy to let battery & mains fire alarms discharge when you change the battery. this can be done by holdig test when its completely disconnected. it might screech, so be careful). some settings may, again, be lost. i usually do this, and then reset the NVRAM as its booting.
you can search any of these on google and find that Apple has specific help pages on these things.
- windows defender has a feature called "offline scan". its really good to run this (i usually do it after running other "live" types of antivirus scan - ie: ones that dont have to restart your computer to run) and it is really goddamn good at getting rid of quiet and hidden viruses, as well as rootkits (these latch onto the core of your computer, making it dangerous to remove by hand because it often edits the registry, which is like your computer's DNA, and removing it will break the registry). it needs a reboot to run, and its best to disable or remove other antivirus software before running it. some 3rd party antiviruses may have similar features.
- do not rely on your once-a-week scan. scan regularly, scan intensely. perhaps set it up to run a deep scan on boot, and leave the computer while it does this.
- actually, do not rely solely on scans. noticing your pc getting hot even when you do nothing? noticed its running slowly, or that your passwords suddenly dont autofill? maybe the new tab page changed, or you keep getting weird ads that youve never seen before and are unrelated to what youve searched. run a scan and lock your pc down. adware can also contain spyware. not that we use them anymore, but toolbars are just an example of that. changes in password form behaviour mean your cookies have probably cleared - and if you leave your pc alone for a while, that could be a problem as it implies someone else remotely accessed your computer then cleared the cookies to hide it. keyloggers are easy to hide, as are backdoors/RATs. junk and viruses from spammy and scammy downloads can slow your pc down, especially if its being pulled into a botnet or if its continuously tracking your data and sending it to someone else.
- do. not. respond. to. calls. from. "microsoft". saying. that. your. ip. is. hacked. it is a KNOWN scam and will result in you paying hundreds for someone to open a command prompt window, type tree or dir, and then install some free antivirus. look up scambaiting. watch videos. know the signs.
- one thing to do to avoid viruses automatically installing themselves: go into your browser settings and change the download option to "ask me every time". this means that any time a sute tries to download something, you must confirm it. oh, also - myth: "viruses can download even if you say no!" truth: literally anything but that. myth: "webcams can turn on without the light turning on!" truth: very few camera lights actually turn on when receiving a command. most actually just recieve some of the cameras power when the conputer talks to it. this means that 99/100 camera lights will come on as soon as the camera does, if not before.
- many browsers allow you to hover over a link and see the url in the bottom corner(s). got a link that the text says is google, but your browser says is "123.gomicrisoft,com/fkw27gk484hfjvn5847"? its probably a scam page.
- incognito/private browsing pages are not self-contained. you can still get viruses through them.
- most importantly:
if in doubt, back out, turn off, call a professional.
SIGNAL BOOST!!!!!!!!
Okay that virus that’s going around, is seriously fucking scary. I got the same thing on my computer about a week ago and I got rid of it, but it took a lot. This type of virus can control your browser, it can control your webcam, it can control all your files, and track you.
If you’ve seen the post already, do not click on the user if someone like this follows you.
Tumblr media
If you do on accident, you will be taken to an FBI site, which tells you you’ve viewed pornography and stuff. Looks a little like this…
Tumblr media
It asks you to pay a fine. ITS NOT REAL. DO NOT PAY IT. You won’t be able to leave the page, or close your browser. Your computer is probably infected now, and you need to remove it.
Click ctrl-alt-delete at the same time and open task manager. Shut down your browser. Uninstall it completely.
Reset your computer to the last known date when you didn’t have the virus.
Install and Run malawarebytes. It’s a free service, that get’s rid of all bugs in your computer. The download link is here. Most antivirus softwares can’t detect things like this, so your best bet is to just download it. Run a full scan to ensure your computer is clean.
Restart your computer, and you should be fine.
The main thing here is to not panic. I did, and it just makes the situation worse than it really is.
If you have seen a post about it, you’ll see that icon, and a URL with random letters. Please don’t risk it, you’ll have to work really hard to get it off your computer. Be careful, and DO NOT PANIC. Here is another tutorial on how to get rid of it,
Any more questions? Feel free to ask me. I got this off two of our computers, so it’s possible. BE SAFE

Former Apple Sound Designer
DiscussesHistory Behind 'Sosumi', Mac Startup Tone, and Camera Click
In the late 1980s Jim Reekes began working as a sound designer for Apple, creating some of the Mac's most iconic sounds like the "Sosumi" beep, startup chord, and camera/screenshot click. In a new
interview with CNBC
, Reekes discussed the origins behind each of these sound creations, and what he thinks about the current audio design of Apple devices. Reekes has
touched upon these topics before
, but they remain interesting for anyone who might not have heard about this part of Apple's history.
Reekes explained that the reason for the name "Sosumi" began with a lawsuit from The Beatles' record label, also named Apple. At the time, Steve Jobs promised that his company would stay focused on computers and not get involved with music, so that the two similarly named companies could coexist.
Tumblr media
After Macs added support for audio recording and MIDI (a standard that connects musical instruments to computers),
The Beatles sued
and forced Reekes to rename any sound effect that had a "musical-sounding name."
Reekes' frustration with the lawsuit eventually led him to the name "Sosumi," because it sounded like "so sue me." Today, Sosumi is still available as an alert sound in the Mac System Preferences.
One of his beeps, originally called "Xylophone," needed a new name. "I actually said I'm gonna call it 'let it beep' and of course you can't do anything like that, but I thought yeah, 'so sue me.' And then I thought that's actually the right name," Reekes said. "I'll just have to spell it funny, so I spelled it Sosumi." He told the lawyers it was a Japanese word that didn't mean anything musical. "That's how that Sosumi beep came around," Reekes explained. "It was really me making fun of lawyers."
Reekes also looked back on the Mac's original startup tone, which annoyed him "immensely" because the Mac crashed so many times that it was easy to equate the tone with a frustrating situation. Although he didn't have permission to change it, he recorded a new c-major chord in his living room and used The Beatles song "A Day in the Life" as inspiration.
Tumblr media
Jim Reekes and the keyboard he used to record the original Mac startup sound via CNBC
Eventually, Reekes managed to sneak the sound into the original Macintosh Quadra computer.
Some engineers at Apple were not happy with the change. "Our excuse was it's too risky to take it back out at this point because something could crash," he said. "We just made up some bulls---." It stuck, and years later Apple even trademarked the start-up sound. It's one of the few sounds that's trademarked, along with the NBC chimes and the Intel signature sound. "Kind of silly right?" Reekes smirked. "I'm playing a c-major chord and it's famous and it's a copyright."
On the topic of startup sounds, Reekes voiced his disappointment in the
lack of any startup chimes on most Macs today
, and gave his opinion on the company's current overall sound design. "I haven't really seen much interesting audio coming out of Apple for a while," he said. Reekes left Apple in the late 1990s and is now a consultant and "out of the sound design business."
There are plenty of other tidbits from Apple's sound design history in the interview, including the origins of the camera click heard on Mac screenshots and in the iPhone's camera app, taken from Reekes' old 1970s Canon AE-1. To read more from the interview, visit
CNBC's website

If you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, use the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar.
If you’re interested in running macOS Sierra, but you don’t want to pay ridiculous prices for a normal Mac, then a Hackintosh just might be for you. Right now (2016), the newest iteration of OS X is 10.11, known as macOS Sierra. I have EOS 7D (First version) and running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13. When I open EOS utility-2 it opens and doesnt connect to camera but when I try to unplug and replug my camera it connects but immediately after that crashes.
Possible Fixes for High Sierra
You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.
Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.
Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.

Also, from my own childhood and early adolescence:
Blowing on the cartridge for an NES game (and then stuffing it into the console with a folded-up sock to get it to work)
The dial-up sounds for our first internet connection
The “clunk” sound a cassette tape player would make every time it came to the end of a tape
Winding a tape back into the cassette with a pencil or my little finger
The Macintosh System 7.5 startup chime
Adjusting the antennas on a television or radio
Using tin foil to improve the TV and radio reception
Watching the volume adjustment knob on the stereo move itself clockwise and counterclockwise when we used the remote control to turn the volume up and down
Turning the Christmas tree lights on and off using a Clapper (there’s actually a funny story that goes along with that one, involving a stick, a pile of used hubcaps from an old car, and two very bored kids)
The Casio VL-Tone keyboard (and its cheerful demo tune)
technology related sensory memories from my childhood
sliding the metal cover on floppy disks
the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo

Why our devices make the sounds they make
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/why-our-devices-make-the-sounds-they-make/
Why our devices make the sounds they make
Brian Eno was in a rut. The English artist had built a career producing legendary acts like David Bowie, The Talking Heads, and U2. But in the early 1990s, “I was completely bereft of ideas,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’d been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually.”
Then Microsoft called.
At that time, the Redmond, Washington-based technology company was preparing to launch Windows 95, it’s most user-friendly operating system to date. And they need a startup song, for the moments between a user pressing the “on” button and the computer actually being ready to use.
“The thing from the agency said, ‘We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah- blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional,’ this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said ‘and it must be 3 1/4 seconds long,’” Eno told the Chronicle. “In fact, I made 84 pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music.”
The instantly-iconic end result clocked in at 6 seconds long and had a vaguely Mr. Rogers-ish sensibility. By December 1995, it was playing for a staggering 100 million Windows 95 users.
The project, which Eno says liberated him from his creative block, marked an important moment in the increasingly close relationship between our devices and our ears. While we rarely reflect on the sounds our laptops, cell phones, and tablets make—and few today play “piece[s] of music” quite like Eno’s Windows 95 composition—every click, clack, and whoosh is crafted crafted. Across platforms, software engineers, user experience designers, and sound branding experts share a common goal: to help us make sense of our technology, and keep us coming back for more.
Age of the earcon
Companies have use sounds to subtly reinforce their brand’s message for almost a century. Early examples include the NBC chimes, which received the first trademark for sound alone from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and MGM’s lions, which first roared in 1928.
But the field really rose to prominence in the 1990s, alongside the rapid development of new consumer technology. Phone companies may have all offered the same service, but they wanted to stand out from their competitors, and hopefully draw more customers in the process.
“There’s a huge element of branding with sound,” says Karen Kaushansky, a user experience designer with more than 20 years of experience. “When you’re building a product for a certain company, what is the meaning we want to put into that sound? And does the brand itself have some audio characteristics or components that can go into the sound?”
In the late 1980s, Apple was faced with its own sonic branding problem. Every time Macintosh computers rebooted, they played called “the devil’s interval.” “It’s any two tones that are three whole steps apart and played at the same time, like middle C plus the F# above it,” the authors of The Sonic Boom: How Sound Transforms the Way We Think, Feel, and Buy explained. “It’s disconcerting, provoking a feeling of agitation and anxiety.”
So Jim Reekes, one of Apple’s engineers, decided to change it. “I thought, I gotta have this meditative sound,” Reekes told The Sonic Boom authors Joel Beckerman with Tyler Gray. “I used to joke about it being a palate cleanser for the ears.” He found what he was looking for in a fading C-major chord in stereo. Company executives were opposed to the “earcon” (a word that means, roughly, “sound icon”), but Reekes managed to sneak his calming chord onto the Macintosh Quadra 700 computer, which debuted in 1991, anyway. Just as Reekes anticipated, the sound was a hit with users.
Attention-seeking design
Sound has proven a natural fit in a UX designer’s attention-grabbing toolkit. Bright colors and lights keep our eyeballs hooked, and variable content means our brain’s itch is never totally scratched. It’s even easier to attract our ears. “The specific range, where a baby cries—a lot of devices are tuned to that frequency,” says Amber Case, a user experience designer and author of the forthcoming book, Designing Products with Sound: Principles and Patterns for Mixed Environments with Aaron Day.
The Marimba ringtone is just one example of sound design capitalizing on our sensitivity to these frequencies. In the 1950s, Bell Labs, which grew out of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell’s research facilities, was hard at work studying ringers. They tested sounds of all stripes, from musical trills to buzzers. They found that sounds in the range of human hearing that pulsed from near-silence to full sound over a period of 3 to 5 seconds were most successful at capturing our attention.
The Marimba meets all of these criteria, which is why it became one of iPhone’s most successful ringtones. “The sound is unique enough that the human brain could easily detect the sound even when layered in a crowded soundscape,” sound consultant Brian Rommelle wrote in a short history of the tone. “It is as annoying perhaps to us today as the original [B]ell telephone ringers were to our grandparents, but in the end, that’s the point.”
Sounds of the future
Sound design is also important in guiding a user through a potentially complicated interface. When an iPhone user types, for example, they hear a click-clack sound like the keys on a keyboard or typewriter. “You need to have these metaphors,” says Cliff Kuang, author of the forthcoming book “User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play” with Robert Fabricant. “This is how new experiences get introduced.”
The keyboard sound, and others like it, are examples of skeuomorphism, a common device that builds associations by mimicking an action’s real life counterpart. It’s the same principle behind the crumpling sound you hear when you put a document (that looks like a paper file) in a waste bin (that looks like a real garbage can, loaded with already crumpled papers) on a Macbook.
“The most famous examples among UX designers is the actual sound of the lock screen on an iPhone,” Kuang says. “It was an association between, ‘Oh, yeah, I can feel that lock snapping because I heard that sound.’ There was a sort of synesthesia to it.” Of course, brand still matters—every platform has their own sound dictionary, with slightly different dings and pings—but usability is at the core of this practice. “A whoosh is a whoosh is a whoosh, but everybody designs that swooping sound slightly differently,” Kuang says.
In recent years, some UX designers have begun to question whether sticking with the familiar skeuomorphic approach still works, or if it’s time make more useful and intuitive sounds from scratch. For her part, Kaushansky is currently hard at work on designing sonic experiences for robots and autonomous vehicles. When asked if driverless cars will mimic sounds in current cars, for nostalgia’s sake or the comfort of passengers and pedestrians, she’s skeptical.
“Horns are kind of dumb. There’s no meaning in the horn you hear. You hear a honk and look around, like, was that for me? There’s no way to know right now,” she says. “We could be doing a lot better job between a ‘toot toot’—a ‘thanks’—versus and ‘errr’—a ‘get out of the way!’”
By disentangling emerging technology from ineffectual practices of the past, Kaushansky thinks “we could make our roads safer, or better, or even more interesting.”
As certain chirps become familiar, tastes change, or design theory moves in a new direction, many sounds are eventually retired. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 95 in 2001. And Apple phased out startup sounds for Macbooks in 2016. But the best earcons live on, in countless YouTube clips and the memories of old school users. And if designers and engineers have their way, the sounds currently under development for autonomous vehicles, robots, or revamped social media platforms will have the same effect on users of the future.
