Before you go further, you should know there are two kinds of Mac OS X signin problems. It depends on if you have enabled FileVault to encrypt your startup drive.

1. Mac won't load past login screen after entering password

It happens to users who encrypt the system drive. You'll be asked for a password before you see the progress bar. In this case, the password is usually accepted, but Mac is stuck on the loading bar. The loading bar may stop somewhere between 50% and 75%, or even 100%.

You can't login to your Mac in this situation because of a Kernel program incompatibility, file system corruption, or some core data lost.

2. Mac won't accept password or you can't enter password in sign in screen

Another case is that the startup is not encrypted by FileVault or APFS feature. Assuming that you use a MacBook Pro, you'll see the loading bar first. But the MacBook Pro's login screen may not appear or gets stuck. MacBook Pro won't accept password but freezes with a spinning wheel or you are unable to type in password.

Solution 1: Bypass Login items at startup

Start your MacBook normally.

1. Repair the startup drive in Disk Utility

Probably, the Mac won't past the Apple logo or login screen because of file system or disk errors. Fortunately, you can check for and repair errors with the built-in tool First Aid.

2. Reset password

Mac could be stuck on the login screen after you forget the Mac's password. If you've entered the wrong password too many times, the system could be locked. Then the Mac won't accept the password even it's the right one.

In this case, you may want to reset your Mac's login password by:

1. Entering your Apple ID

2. Providing recovery key if you have created on before.

1. In macOS Recovery mode, open the Terminal by clicking Utilities > Terminal in the top menu bar.

2. At the Terminal prompt, type resetpassword, and then hit Enter.

3. Follow its onscreen wizard to reset the password.

With the password hint, you can change the password of a non-encrypted account. Then you can restart your Mac and log in to your Mac again.

3. Check and fix user preference settings

Sometimes, the .plist files related to user preferences could be changed. Then, your login information would not be accepted.

In this case, you can use the mv command in Terminal to rename the preference folder. And you can troubleshoot and nuke the problematic .plist file easily.

The other times you can't log in to the Mac just because the access to the user directory was changed. You can run chmod to change the access permission.

4. Reset launch services database

If the Mac gets stuck on the login screen and won't accept the password, you can remove the .csstore file ( a launch services database) in Terminal and fix the problem.

1. Open Terminal in macOS Recovery mode.

2. At the Terminal prompt, type find /private/var/folders | grep com.apple.LaunchServices | grep csstore, and then hit Enter.

3. Remove every .csstore file you can find by rm command.

5. Reinstall macOS in macOS Recovery mode

This is the closest single equivalent there is, in that it ends program process whether they are stuck or not, basically forcing them to quit.

If you have been a Windows user you will be familar with the CTRL+ALT+DEL command that allows you to force applications to close when they aren't doing what.

If you switch to a Mac after becoming familiar with Windows, you’ll quickly find that the standard Ctrl+Alt+Delete shortcut doesn’t do anything. Mac OS X does have its own version of the Task Manager, but it’s a bit different than Windows’, and you access it by pressing Command+Option+Esc.

Ctrl+Alt+Del You can send the Ctrl+Alt+Del command to a remote Windows computer to view the options for locking the computer, launching the task manager, signing off the current user profile etc. On a remote Mac, sending the Ctrl+Alt+Del command will open the Force Quit Applications window.

How to Ctrl Alt Delete on Mac

Turns out they are there—three magic buttons just like Windows. Command + Option (Alt) + Esc.

Pressing these three buttons simultaneously opens the “Force Quit Applications” window. Here you’ll see all your running applications and a button that says “Force Quit.”

Simply select the application(s) you want to go nuclear on and click “Force Quit.” Your Mac will take care of the rest.

Pro Tip: You can close multiple apps at once. To select a range of apps hold shift and click the starting and ending apps in the list. To select individual apps, hold command and select the apps you want to close. Then just click “Force Quit.”

Of course Windows also lets you view running processes in the Task Manager. What about Mac? Because Mac is Unix-based you could fire up the Terminal app. Or you could save yourself some work and open the Activity Monitor app.

Activity Monitor is a fantastic tool. You can view which processes are taking up the most memory, the most processing power, and even the most energy. You can also view disk and network statistics. The bottom of the window even provides a visual representation of the numbers.

If you ever hear your fan running faster than normal—or notice lag within your apps—Activity Monitor can help you identify which apps are hogging resources; and, even shut them down as needed. Just remember to be careful when closing processes and applications. Especially if you’re not sure what they do.

Click the headings to sort processes. When you want to end a process, you can use the force quit icon in the top-left of the window (it looks like a stop sign with an “x” in it). Just select the process you want to end and click that force quit icon.

Of course there’s always more than one way to bake a cake. In addition to Activity Monitor and the Force Quit Applications menu, you can also click and hold a non-responsive app in the dock and choose “Force Quit” from the contextual menu.

Many people think Ctrl-Alt-Delete started with Windows. Truth is it didn’t. Bill Gates adopted the shortcut from IBM. Early IBM computers utilized the keyboard shortcut to soft reboot devices. Undo (Ctrl + Z)

Sometimes you just need to take back your last move. Many applications on Mac allow you to undo a command by pressing Command + Z.

You may even be able to “redo” your last move by pressing Command + Shift + Z.

Reasons to start your Mac in Safe Mode

Mac's Safe Mode minimizes the applications you have available on your Mac to help identify where any issues might be coming from. Starting up your computer and making it run in Safe Mode is also known as a safe boot (safe boot is how your Mac starts, Safe Mode is how it runs).

Booting in Safe Mode doesn’t just restrict your applications: A safe boot also checks through your startup drive to make sure there are no problems there.

A fault in your system (like corrupted boot sector) might be preventing you from using your Mac at all. By booting in Safe Mode, your Mac can work with macOS core processes to get back into the system and identify problems, such as floating extensions or rogue applications, that you can then remove.

What happens in Safe Mode

When your computer is prompted to perform a safe boot, it will perform a number of tasks before you can use it, which include:

A directory check of the startup drive;

Running on only the bare minimum of necessary kernel extensions;

Short Guide to Boot Camp Windows 10 on a Mid-2011 iMac

So this was my life for basically 10 hours yesterday. There are some more technical guides out there but they didn’t work for me. The problem is that I own a Mid-2011 iMac (Apple Icon > “About this Mac” will show you what your model year is). It’s a relatively common “older” model, but it was on the brink of a lot of upgrades that would make it easier to use and more powerful on the technical side. So what does this mean?

If you have a mid-2011 Mac, you can’t just Boot Camp Windows 10 using the software like you can Win7 or 8. It won’t even give you the option. In addition, they can’t even boot from most USB sticks. So you have to burn a disc of the ISO, period. Anyway I’ve written a guide on how to do this as painlessly as possible for those of you that have this particular need as I do.

TL;DR: Install Windows 7 or 8, then upgrade to Windows 10.

You will need: A legitimate Windows 10 product key (...), 2+ blank DVDs (or one DVD and a disc copy of Windows 7), a blank USB stick/flash drive, an internet connection. A legitimate Windows 7 product key is optional, because we won’t actually be using it except briefly as a bridge to Windows 10, which requires a *different* product key.

NOTE: It is possible that you can do this with Windows 8 instead! But that is not what I did, because I already had a Windows 7 disc. Your mileage may vary.

1) Prepare: Back up your computer. Any time you do something like this, and any time you do a major OS update, make sure you back up your hard drive. Externals are cheap as hell these days. I use Time Machine and a 2TB USB drive. - Download the ISO file for both Windows 7** and Windows 10, and burn them to separate DVDs (DVD Burning Instructions: Yosemite, El Capitan), making SURE to run and pass verification (my Windows 10 ISO failed verification, wouldn’t even load, and effectively wasted a DVD. I burned at the slower 4x speed the second time.) If you own or can borrow a disc copy of Windows 7, you do not need to burn the ISO to DVD. ** Microsoft doesn’t offer the Windows 7 ISO without a product key so I can’t really help you here. I had an old Win7 Ultimate ISO disc from the first time I did this. Technically you don’t need a legitimate copy of Windows 7 for this BUT I DIDN’T SAY THAT. - Open Boot Camp Assistant (in Applications > Utilites) and check ONLY the box to download the Windows support software to a blank USB (the first option.) This is the drivers that Windows needs to properly use Apple keyboard, mouse, etc. and will be installed after everything else. - Have your product key(s) handy.

2) Partition and Install Windows 7: Insert the Windows 7 DVD. Open Boot Camp Assistant (in Applications > Utilities). Choose the second option ONLY, to create a boot camp drive partition. Follow the easy on-screen directions. This part is normal, because we’re just installing Windows 7 and creating a properly formatted partition (important!) using Boot Camp Assistant. When it asks for a product key, you can skip that step if you do not have a legitimate key. Windows will work for 30 days without a product key. If there is a problem with your Windows 7 installation you may need to look up the specific problem.

3) Upgrade: When your Windows 7 Boot Camp drive is set up correctly and you have successfully booted into it without an issue, remove the Windows 7 disc and insert the Windows 10 disc. Run the Windows 10 disc from within Windows 7. It will ask for the product key before installing. In a perfect world, the installation goes off without a hitch at this point!

4) Troubleshoot: So it’s very likely that you’ll run into a problem. My installation had the following problems: hanging at the first progress percentage screen, a straight up fail to install message, hanging at the Windows 10 start screen. - If the first install percentage gets stuck at 2% (like mine) or at 24% (another common place), you may have to quit the install and try again. - If you get a vague fail to install message (like I did) and it quits to desktop, you’ll have to begin the install again. - If your install hangs at the start screen (you WILL NOT see the spinning circles loading animation if this happens), you will need to force restart. - If your computer freezes solid (no animations, no nothing) for more than 30-45 min, you will probably need to force restart. Start the Windows 10 install again, this time with feeling. If you have a problem that isn’t listed here, you will need to look it up.

5) Success!: Once Windows 10 is installed, answer the questions and create/login to your Windows account and follow the prompts. Everything will look like garbage. Give it a minute to find and update the graphics drivers, and follow any other reasonable prompts. Feel free to eject the Windows 10 DVD. Once things have calmed down and figured out its resolution, insert the Windows Support Software USB and run the program to install the Apple drivers. When complete, feel free to eject the USB.
