Mac, Jack, and Riley are on an observe-and-report mission when Jack finds Mac upchucking in an alley. Food poisoning is the worst.

Written for Day 2 of Cairo Day 2025: Improvise (I finished a work I started 3 years ago to the day, so it was probably for a Cairo Day prompt back then.)

Things were going well.  Too well.  Jack's head was on a swivel, looking out for danger as he worried about how easy their observe-and-report mission had been so far.  This was the first one since they'd been disavowed in the Netherlands, so Jack had reason to be concerned.

"Looks like the meet's over," Riley said as she hit a few keys on the keyboard.  "Video is saved and uploading to Phoenix now."  

Jack looked over his shoulder from the driver's seat to where she sat in the back, surrounded by computer monitors.  "So, it's done?"

"It's done," she confirmed.  "Where'd Mac go?"

"Said he was getting snacks, but that was," Jack looked at his watch, "more'n thirty minutes ago.  He's probably trying to find that frou-frou sparkly drink you like."

"Kombucha isn't sparkly, Jack.  It's barely sparkling, and it has a lot of health benefits.  You should try it."

"You've been spending too much time with Bozer."  Jack scoffed as he stepped out of the van.  The usual SoCal sunshine was hidden behind a layer of clouds, so he didn't bother to grab his sunglasses.  The mini-mart they had been visiting was on the next block, so Jack headed that way, keeping an eye out for anything amiss.

Also banger episodes!

I feel like No Go + High Voltage + Rescue is probably one of- if not the- best post-Jack episode. Or at least it's the one of the few that I can remember. I did like the way Mac dealt with his fear of heights. (I don't remember the episode or if I liked the rest of it, but also the one where Mac was free climbing in a cave and Bozer had to talk him through a panic attack. That was very nice too. Mac + Heights is usually a good time. For us.) I am also avoiding a rewatch that includes season 4 and 5 however, I also have a work in progress that won't get any further unless I actually watch them.

One of my favorite lines is from 1x07 purely from the way Mac says "didn't you read his file, Jack? Special skills include stealing top secret information with his phone and the hundred meter dash." And a minute later Jack says "he won't be dead, he'll just be shot" so I get what you're saying, sometimes something strikes you just right.

Let’s admit that the MacGyver bracket is gonna be an insane battle between our fav episodes of season 1 and 2 and a couple eps from S3. If S4 or S5 makes it in, I will lmao 🤣

This has been so much fun today! It feels like the most active the fandom has been in a while. I'm really hoping that more folks start engaging in some friendly debate and playful propaganda. I want to see episode analyses, photos, gifs, favorite quotes, reasons favorite episodes are favorites! It'll help ease the sting from watching favorite episodes go head to head, knowing only one can come out victorious. Some of the match ups have already been brutal!

(If S4-5 make it past the first few rounds then the polls got leaked to twitter or there's a poll bot or something, right? But it is really going to come down to seeding. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that seasons 1-2 don't take each other out too soon)

Just for fun, and just for myself, I've got few predictions of what episodes I think are probably going to come out on top. There are a few fandom favorites and I'm pretty sure we know what they are. Like it's practically a rite of passage to write a 2x04 missing scene or epilogue and I live for those. But that said, a few months back, I had a poll on Favorite Mac Hair and was surprised by the results. I thought everyone loved the longer, fluffier hair of seasons 1 or 3 but season 2 was the clear winner so maybe I just know what I like.

What is your favorite episode? I love learning these things. And what's your favorite not-famous episode? (how is not-famous defined? I don't know. However you choose!) And what makes it stand out as a favorite?

The first few drops of rain surprised him. Mac hadn’t looked at the weather forecast in days, partly because they had been in Belarus and then Germany for back-to-back missions. The rain was cold as it came down faster and harder, dribbling under the neck of his jacket and causing him to shiver.

Mac stopped under the awning of a closed restaurant and checked the nearby street signs. He was a long way from home but only a few blocks from Jack’s apartment. That also surprised him since he hadn’t consciously thought about Jack at all during his run.

The heavy rain turned into a downpour and was getting worse, so Mac decided it best to get to Jack’s quickly. He sprinted down the sidewalk and cut across the street at exactly the wrong time.

Brakes squealed loudly just before he felt the impact on his left hip, and then he was airborne. He landed painfully, rolling to a stop in the street with rainwater sluicing around him.

“Oh, my God.” A strange young man was suddenly kneeling beside him, repeating that phrase over and over again.

“Call,” Mac coughed and cried out in pain as that jarred his injuries, “911.”
