Cairo Day is a week-long MacGyver fandom celebration which usually takes place during the week of April 14th, the airdate of the season one finale. This event has been ongoing since 2019 and every year we hear from people who weren't able to finish the projects they were working on. While we will always happily accept "late" stories, artwork, gifs etc. we also recognize the appeal and hype of working toward a goal or deadline.

Posted below are all the prompts from the previous six years. As all these prompts were submitted and voted on by the participants there were some repeats and we have included them. You can fill as many or as few as you would like. You can do all the prompts from one year or mix and match your favorites. The fandom may not be as active as we were once upon a time but we're still around.

I'm trying my best to finish at least one fic for Cairo Day next month, and one scene involves needing to crack a safe, something I was trying to do in a way that was heavily improvised and very much on brand for our boy Mac.

Well I decided to bring it up to my grandfather (former EOD, named Jack) during our weekly coffee date today, and not only did he tell me exactly how to crack that safe (using explosives and a wine bottle, no less) he even sketched a diagram of the whole process for me.

Once again I am reminded why the show hits so close to home for me, whose irl nickname is Mac, and whose father-figure is named Jack. Role reversal with the EOD stuff, but this fic just became so, so special to me!

How about "Cairo Day 2023" for the wip game?

HELLO (said very normally and not in an insane way)

I tried so hard on cairo day 2023 but unfortunately I did not succeed in my conquest to finish it all. I'll give you a snippet of what I started to write for the few chapters I did do!

Prompt 1: Bloody Hands in a Sink

The water turned off, but she continued to scrub, her hands turning red as she removed layer after layer of skin. Gentle hands met hers, and as she looked up, she let the unshed tears from her eyes begin to fall. 

“I know it feels like it, but you can’t wash it off, Riles. I need you to trust me on that.” Mac said, bringing her hands in front of them, holding them gently as he looked into her tearing eyes. “I know it hurts.” 

Prompt 2: Hidden Injury

“That sucked.” She said, rubbing at her eyes, eventually looking up and over at Mac, brows furrowing in a scarily familiar fashion to how Jack’s did moments ago. “Hey, you okay, Mac? You look a little pale.” 

“Thanks, Riley, I’m white, in case you hadn’t noticed.” 

A warm wrist found its way to his forehead and he swatted at it, and after a few moments, the heat was released, Jack squinting at him suspiciously. 

“You are a little warm there, brother. You wanna sit on the ground in case something happens?”

Prompt 3: Respiratory Distress

Mac had a complicated relationship with oxygen. Having been deprived of it all too often, he’d gotten used to the feeling that came with breathing in something he shouldn’t be. A job hazard, he supposed, but it didn’t change the fact that losing oxygen wasn’t a fun experience. Even less so when it’s not an outside factor influencing the lack of breath, but his own brain.

Piton Jack had a good excuse for ditching PT for his arm and playing a little Grand Theft Airplane with Phoenix resources during S:1E:19 "Compass." Mac was grieving and might need him. He'll deal with the consequences of those actions later. He would do anything to protect Mac. But when Jack is placed on mandatory leave, it's Mac who ends up paying the price.

"What's going on in here?" Riley asked as she walked into the mess that had become of Mac's living room. There were books strewn across every surface, loose printed pages all over the floor, three laptops all open to webpages about plants, and about twenty coffee mugs among the detritus. The TV was also playing a black-and-white monster movie.

Bozer, leaning against the partition that separated the kitchen from the foyer, nodded in greeting. Then, he turned his attention back to the whirlwind that was MacGyver. "Our boy is doing a crash course on lycanthropy. Including all the movie versions."

"He looks like he's about to crash," Riley said with a fair amount of concern.

Mac's clothes were coffee-stained and disheveled. His hair was sticking up in all directions, and his eyes had enough baggage for extra fees at the airport.

"He's been like this since they got back from Italy."

"That was three days ago!"

For Cairo Day

Since I didn't have time to write a fic, I want you all to understand that in 5x15 Mac could only have spent 13 minutes at 3.5ATM without having to decompress, and Riley could only have spent 20 minutes at 2.8ATM without having to decompress.

Which means, if that montage took as long as it seemed to, they both would have had to go right back in those chambers as soon as they finished congratulating themselves on surviving to finish decompressing.

Or better yet, have to make the decision to risk decompression illness instead of getting back in those chambers.

Life sort of imploded right before Cairo Day started (and it still is insane, for the most part) so my time for creativity and writing kind of disappeared. But, I am determined to finish these fics, so here is a portion of the one I was writing for the fifth day/prompt, as a sort of accountability for me to continue writing it as I am able:

Two shots rang out in quick succession and Jack only barely registered the pain that suddenly sprang to life in his shoulder. His attention was focused solely on the way Mac's body had jerked

before the kid had tackled him and sent them both falling behind the nearest cover. "Mac!" he yelled. He turned, his eyes widening at the sight of blood on Jack's shirt, and any hurt Jack was feeling vanished as if it had never been there in the first place. The kid had so much blood flowing down his chest and side it was a miracle he wasn't unconscious. "Oh man, okay, hoss, just...just stay still for me, alright?" he said as Mac started to reach for the wound on Jack's shoulder, likely to put pressure on it.

His brow furrowed. "Why? You're bleeding, we need to get that stopped. Did you see where the shots came from?"

At this, it was Jack's turn to frown. Did Mac even realize he'd been shot? "How are you feeling, bud?"

"How am I-what does that have to do with anything?" Mac shook his head, breathing labored.

"A lot, trust me," Jack said, reaching for the wound that looked the worst, only to get his hand slapped away.

Mac knew the Bozers would be dismayed when he enlisted in the military, and he certainly wasn't expecting anyone to visit him.

Bozer wasn’t old enough to rent a car, but somehow showed up with one anyway. “I borrowed it from the cousin of a girl at film school who I was working with last semester on one of those Pepsi short films they show before movies,” he explained. In the five minutes since Mac greeted him, he’d been babbling nonstop. “So after the ceremony I thought I’d take you out to eat in style.” “This is style?” Mac asked, raising his brows at the car. It was a mid-90s Toyota, all red except for one door, which was silver. Bozer shrugged. “It’s not a taxi.” Mac hadn’t asked him to come, hadn’t really expected any of the Bozers to show up for his graduation from basic training. He wasn’t a kid anymore: he was 18, as he proved by walking into an Army enlistment center the week before spring semester finals and signing away his life to the military. The Bozers might believe in serving the community as a career, but joining the Army? That conversation hadn’t gone too well...
