[au] rags to riches; +macandemma
Nothing had proved a better ending to Joseph Elliot O'Connor's stressful days than having dinner at one of his favorite restaurants, a Venetian-themed palace with the best food that Indiana could offer. After finishing off a big meal with one of his co-workers, he brushed his hands together and looked to the side, picking up his glass of water to take a sip. He raised his eyebrow.
A woman, by the looks of it (he couldn't see very clearly; she was draped in a plethora of raggedy clothing, something unusual around these parts of town) stepped out of the kitchen, her demeanor very suspicious. Nevertheless, he watched her as he went right past the servers and the customers who were too busy in their conversations to notice. His attention had been provoked; with investigative eyes, he excused himself from the table and followed the woman.
Once he stepped outside, he straightened up the collar of his blazer and looked around: there were barely any people on the street, just the occasional couple who were stepping in the restaurant to eat. He turned his head and saw the same woman sneak into an alley. Rushing past a lovely couple, Joey ran to follow the woman and called out, "Hey! What do you think you're doin'?"
Sure, it wasn't any of his business. If there was anything that Joey learned after all of those years listening to his father's lectures, it was that he should be observant -- but at the same time, mind his own. There was just something about this woman that was mysterious and curbed his curiosity: as if he wanted to know how exactly she had gotten away with thievery.
