Dr. John (Ronnie Barron) - Did She Mention My Name? (1964)
A friend played this wonderful NOLA soul tune for me recently, and I found it hard to believe it was Dr. John. That’s because it wasn’t Mac Rebennack singing, it was Ronnie Barron. Mac Rebennack had come up the the persona of Dr. John, the night tripper, and he wanted Ronnie Barron to play the role. Ronnie wasn’t having it, and the rest is history. Mac did write the song, and there’s a record which credits Ronnie Barron though it’s a bit faster.

Video for Aaron Neville and Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s "Stomping Ground" which won the GRAMMY Award for Best American Roots Performance. ___________________ Stomping Ground Songwriters: Dave Gutter, Eric Krasno and Aaron Neville
I was born in the southern land That's where I became a man My roots was down in New Orleans The birth of jazz and voodoo queens From the heart of Louisiana Marie Laveaux, and Mojo Hannah Grew up on the music of the streets Second line bands and the Indian beats
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground
‘Fesser Longhair, Fats Domino From Smiley Lewis, to the Great Satchmo From the Wild Tchoupatoulas, to the Creole Wild West Neither tribe didn't take no mess From way up town in the Thirteenth ward The Crescent City was my back yard With Mac Rebennack and Scarface John Hung in the Dew Drop all night long
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground Back on my stompin’ ground
Way down yonder in New Orleans The land of them creole queens I sure love this southern town It got me through a lot of ups and downs Times were bad and times were good
I owe it all to my neighborhood From the Ninth ward, to way uptown Every block was my stompin’ grounds
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground
Mole Face and Melvin, Billy Beat the World Trecherous Slim, Secondline Black Big Chief Jolly, Ratty Chin Brother Jake, Apache Red
Stackalee, James Booker Marvin and Johnny, Art the Mighty Row Hornman, Jabby Izzy Koo
That's where it's going down Back on my stompin' ground
Calliope Project, Magnolia St. Thomas, Pilot Land, St. Bernard Melpomine – Yeah Sometimes them streets was mean, can ya dig? But that was my stompin’ ground, where y’at, Jack?

In celebration of Nonesuch Records’ 60th anniversary comes Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection—100 box sets of 20 newly created prints from photographer Michael Wilson’s Nonesuch archive, out tomorrow, including this image of Dr. John from 2012. "Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) dressed to the nines and holding sway on a balcony in New Orleans—what is not to be liked? His sense of playfulness on this day is the thing that stands out strongest in my memory. It is kind of an odd thing to meet and photograph people whose name and work are well known, because, in spite of any such knowledge, at the core of the encounter is the reality that two strangers are meeting and must look for a way into a conversation that is both verbal and visual and which will hopefully prove to be honest and interesting to others."
You can order Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection in the Nonesuch Store here.

#122: "Gris-Gris" by Dr. John, the Night Tripper (1968)
uhh, this record is fucking weird??? but like, good weird, not bad weird.
Dr. John is a character created by Mac Rebennack, who was a legendary session musician. the character is a voodoo healer, inspired by Mac's New Orleans home. as such, this record combines alot of Louisiana blues (apparently called Swamp Blues), and a lot of typical-for-the-time psychedelia, which blends together into a really strange, ethereal texture that was quite striking. all the references to voodoo mythology leave the record is absolutely dripping with atmosphere. really liked this record.

SUN + MOON + HERBS
From the golden art deco inspired cover through the fascinating story of a planned three LP magnum opus, The Sun Moon and Herbs is a highlight in the long career of the New Orleans legend ‘Mac’ Rebennack, aka Dr John, The Night Tripper. Blending the good Doctor’s various styles and influences into an ecstatic musical gumbo, the album pulses with voodoo power and sways to licentious grooves,…

REVIEW: Dr. John “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya – Singles 1968-1974”
REVIEW: Dr. John “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya – Singles 1968-1974” @omnivorerecordings @americanahighways #drjohn #americanahighways #americanamusic #newmusic2024 #grisgrisgumboyaya @aka_drjohn
Dr. John – Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya – Singles 1968-1974 This is a classic collection of a unique artist who has gone to his reward but left behind an impressive catalog. Pianist Mac Rebennack entertained with the persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper & he laid out some interesting New Orleans swampy rock-oriented songs with humidity & jambalaya hot melodies. Beginning with “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya,”…
