What’s your favorite comics era/universe to write in??

I feel like this is a really obvious answer from me but I really love writing 616 Avengers v3. This is pretty much the first time Steve and Tony were both on the main team after Steve learned Tony was Iron Man -- technically there were also a few months in there in the early 80s right after Molecule Man but that's a little fraught because then Tony starts drinking and then they're not on the same team for 15 years. So if you want a setup with no identity porn, where they've been friends for a while, where they haven't really done anything all that bad to each other, and they live in the mansion, the only time that happens in v3, because that's the last time they all lived in the mansion other than for like five minutes before No Surrender happened.

Obviously later settings have their virtues if you want to write about them after all the Bad Things have happened, but when I just want to write something fluffy where the time frame doesn't really matter and I don't want to explain how they feel about, say, Civil War, v3 is my go to. Either that or the end of v4, but then you occasionally have to explain their Civil War feelings.

Something like Marvel Adventures: Avengers can get you a similar fluffy dynamic but then you don't have all their 616 history to draw on so I usually don't do MA:A unless I want something that's really about a lot of lighthearted team interaction.

Having said that, I'm (still) working on a post-AXE Judgment Day story (so, set now, basically) and it's kind of refreshing to not have to remember what things have or haven't happened yet because everything is on the table! It can be a story where their romantic history includes things like how Superior Tony was sleeping with men and Steve found out Tony was queer from his dating profile! It in fact actually is that kind of story.

Hey, so I don’t know if anyone really follows this blog for writing updates (and if you do I am so sorry that I... never post any? Please let me know if you’d like me to, because I can), but since I’m talking fic anyway because of the very kind rec from @cptxrogers , and since it’s bingo deadline tonight...

I had big plans for this round of bingo, with one fic in particular that I’ve spent a lot of time and love on (@sineala has been very graciously and patiently supporting me with it), and some others that I think have potential. HOWEVER, work and life stuff got on top of me, and I decided that I would rather hold back and post it a little bit later when I was really happy with it, rather than rush it through and stress myself out - to the detriment of both myself and the fic - just for the sake of bingo. But I’m hoping to have it done soon, and I hope you like it once it’s ready! I may also finish and post the other bingo fills I was planning, inspiration permitting.

ALSO, I case anyone was wondering, I haven’t abandoned my MA:A series or my universe-hopping series, I’ve just put them on hiatus. I haven’t posted anything in a few months, but I’m still writing pretty much every day and I don’t have any plans to stop.

The first of the month is when I usually repost things I have posted to my Patreon, but I haven’t posted anything there this month except some dog pictures and a scrap of a MA:A story that never went anywhere, because I was too busy trying to finish the Madame Masque story.

The good news is that I am almost done with the Madame Masque story -- I finished Chapter 5 out of 6 literally last night, and Chapter 6 is going to be an Extremely Short epilogue, pretty much, so this story ought to be ready to go very soon, and I can work on other stuff (like the Star Trek AU), and it means I can get back to posting weird comics reviews to Patreon. (Or, you know,  whatever anyone else wants to see on Patreon. The only feedback I’ve gotten is that the dog pictures are nice.)

Your stevetony rec list was absolutely amazing thank you so so much for it!! I was wondering if you could rec some comics in which steve and tony are all happy and cutesy? Again, thanks so much for taking the time to answer asks like this!

A couple months ago I answered an ask from someone who had a very similar question (more or less, what are the times in canon when Steve and Tony were getting along?), except they additionally wanted no secret identity, so that rules out early canon. What you’re left with in 616 at that point is basically Avengers vol 3, the beginning of New Avengers vol 1, the second half of Avengers vol 4, and actually they’re friends in the current (vol 8) run but they haven’t really shared page time much lately.

But if you want Steve and Tony being honest-to-God cute, mostly what you want is either Not Technically 616 or found only in miniseries or annuals:

Avengers: Back to Basics. I’m pretty sure I recced this recently, but I might as well rec it again. It’s a six-issue mini that is a tour through some of  the team’s earlier years, and it’s not exactly canon, but Steve and Tony are friends, it’s very cute, and at one point the villain makes Steve wear his old Nomad outfit, so obviously it’s worth it for that. It’s not out in trade yet, but it will be soon. You better believe I’m buying a copy.

Captain America: Man Out of Time. I will always rec this miniseries, solely because it features Tony taking Steve on a date at the Smithsonian and showing him the wonders of the future. Including Radiohead.

Avengers Prime. Basically it’s about Steve and Tony learning to love each other again after Civil War. There are rescues, shared horseback riding, gratuitous nudity, and hugs.

Avengers Annual 2013. This is the annual that was released during Hickman’s Avengers run but it has nothing whatsoever to do with it; it’s a Christmas issue by Kathryn Immonen. If you’ve seen the panels where Tony makes Steve refer to himself as Captain Handsome in order to access the Avengers’ systems, that would be from this issue.

One Night in Madripoor (Captain America & Iron Man #633-635). A three-issue arc of Captain America from 2012 in which Steve and Tony team up in Madripoor and fight AIM and MODOK and robot bees together. There is a lot of banter and it is adorable.

Marvel Adventures: Avengers. This is not 616; it is its own universe. Marvel Adventures was a line of all-ages comics. MA:A ran for 39 issues, but if you want everyone being happy, this is what you want to read; yes, technically, it’s for children but I assure you that it is an awful lot of fun for adults. The two issues Steve/Tony fans like best are #27, in which Steve and Tony basically go on a basketball-playing date, and #30, in which they basically go on a date in the park. They’re VERY CUTE. Definitely BFFs. The rest of MA:A is great too. So fluffy!
