In almost all cases, manufacturers who choose to equip their cars with a V8 engine do so knowingly and deliberately. After all, such engines represent the first big step in crossing over a threshold to where performance becomes the sole focus; efficiency and economy are often not even invited as guests for a ride-along in the back seat.

With a quick glance at the back mirror, those pesky 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines begin to disappear into the horizon. Then, with the proverbial “pedal-to-the-medal”, the V8 power plant unanimously declares “all-in” with a loud roar – because this journey is all about thrill-seeking and checking things off the bucket list.

While high-performance V8 engines have normally been reserved for exotics – and muscle cars, in the more distant past – its application has been seen more in the mainstream these days. With the proliferation of automotive technologies, the V8 engine has become a gateway into the world of attainable supercar performance; each new engine is better than the one before it.

AMG GT Black Series „The Endgame“.

Back in the days, the most powerful AMG V8 series engine of all time, the most expressive design, the most elaborate aerodynamics, the most intelligent material mix, the most distinctive driving dynamics: For the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (combined fuel consumption 12.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 292 g/km)[1], the Affalterbach designers have pulled out all the stops when it comes to the art of vehicle design.

The super sports car perfectly embodies the brand’s rich tradition in motorsport, as well its many years of expertise in developing complete vehicles which impress in every respect. The result is an output of 537 kW (730 hp) from a V8 engine with a ‚flat‘ crankshaft, combined with active aerodynamics and a design which stems directly from the current AMG GT3 racing car.

The design of a V8 engine gives designers plenty of room to play with in one key element: the crank arrangement on the crankshaft.

The result is the most powerful V8 series engine from Mercedes-AMG.

The GT Black Series engine may be based on the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with dry sump lubrication, but it has been given the new internal code M178 LS2 due to the numerous modifications. It achieves 730hp at 6700-6900 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 800Nm at 2000-6000 rpm. New camshafts and exhaust manifolds are adapted to the new firing order and further improve the gas cycle.

Both twin scroll exhaust turbochargers are mounted in anti-friction bearings, as in the top-of-the-range four-door AMG GT Coupé, which optimises their throttle response even further. However, in the Black Series, the turbochargers have been given a larger compressor wheel, meaning that both can deliver a total of 1100 kg air per hour.

Late model 996 911

M178 Mercedes V8, hot vee turbos removed, replaced with 8-1 spaghetti manifold exiting out the back. Big n/a cams and higher compression. ITBs being fed by the side scoops. Rev it out to 9000rpm.

Put some GT3 RS suspension and brakes on it, remove some weight. Put a short ratio gearbox with an lsd in front of the engine and have the wildest sounding 911 on the planet.

Mercedes-Benz GT AMG Black Series 

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the ultimate GT not simply because of its repertoire of new features harvested from the GT3 Touring Car. At its heart lies the new ‘M178 LS2’ engine which has been exclusively developed for use in the GT Black Series. This new powerplant features a reconfigured 4.0-liter displacement constructed around a flat pane crankshaft; AMG literature states that the new firing order greatly improves thermal dynamics and throttle response. The pair of twin-scroll turbochargers have also been enlarged over previous iterations of the M178 blueprint; they operate at a ‘normal’ boost setting of 25 PSI.the GT Black Series’ exclusive new powerplant is factory-rated at an astounding 730 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift DCT with gear ratios optimized for rapid acceleration over top speed. Zero to 60 mph takes just three seconds, with 125 mph arriving just six seconds later en route to a reported top speed over 200 mph.

為成就態度而生！Mercedes-AMG引擎大軍傾巢而出

AMG，對Mercedes-Benz來說是無可取代的歷史里程。由3個字母拼成足以代言「性能」意義的符號表徵，孕育其中的是那面對極速絕不妥協的堅毅韌性。這就是AMG所謂的「One attitude your choice���，一種已蘊含於品牌基因之間的態度，並成為車迷們的唯一選擇。然而這些隻字片語並無法全然陳述AMG這般自賽道而生的性能存在，可當仔細檢視其與Mercedes-Benz以及追求大排氣量引擎的歷史時，或許便可嗅出那一絲的端倪。

如同許多車迷所知，AMG這3個字母取自於創辦人維爾訥·奧弗雷希特（Hans-Werner Aufrecht）和埃哈德·梅爾切（Erhard Melcher）其個別的姓氏字母開頭，以及奧弗雷希特的出生地格羅薩斯帕赫（德語： Großaspach）。這段有著濃厚創辦人血統的命名由來不僅為許多人所津津樂道，加上奧弗雷希特及梅爾切早年皆為當時Daimler-Benz的員工，因此就技術面上也同樣和Mercedes-Benz相輔相成。也因此當AMG於1967年以賽車工程公司成立以降，便經手改裝、調校過不少的Mercedes-Benz車款，並於眾多房車錦標賽上取得佳績，這也讓Mercedes-Benz與AMG就好似亦師亦友般的存在。直到1999年Mercedes-Benz將其收購後，為紀念這段過往而保留AMG之名的同時，其實也預告這個滿溢著賽道魂魄的品牌將被推往更高性能的殿堂，所以今時今日才會成為我們眼前的Mercedes-AMG。

不過，究竟AMG有什麼魅力能夠讓全球眾多車迷願意起始追求呢？其實關於這個問題其實從近期發展的幾款車型來看，似乎便能有所體認，而著重於動力能耐的AMG車款自然在車款命名上會導入其引擎編制。絲我以不論是率性肆意又充滿跑格風範的C 43 4MATIC，又或是打破Crossover格局、重新塑造CUV印象的跨界鋼砲GLA 45 4MATIC，以及在奔馳與舒適之間取得平衡的高端房車座駕E63 S 4MATIC+，中間的數字皆代表著採用的引擎規格，當然更別忘記為了同屬63系列引擎但可謂是衝刺而生的絕美超跑GT車系，皆是近幾年Mercedes-AMG最為之精湛的作品！

43系列引擎

代表作品：C 43 4MATIC C 43 4MATIC的存在就好似為Mercedes-AMG在刻意一款車塑造出內斂卻又能隨時猛烈追擊的印象，尤其在賦與43系列引擎後縱然外表優雅並展現典型的德意志設計手法，但就正是這顆動力讓C 43 4MATIC絕對不容小覷。採用代號M276的3.0升V6雙渦輪引擎下，有著367hp/5,500-6,000rpm的最大馬力，峰值扭力更高達53.1kgm/2,000-4,200rpm，這般數據代表的不僅僅只是隨傳隨到的動力快感，更代表著在油門踏入的那一刻起將激起厚實激昂的聲浪協奏，並透過4MATIC四驅設定牢牢地展開貼地飛行的戲碼。

45系列引擎

代表作品：GLA 45 4MATIC GLA 45 4MATIC所採用的45系列引擎不像其他老大哥們有這麼多的汽缸，但卻也在追求性能極致的同時，擁有地表最強悍的量產型2.0升4缸渦輪增壓汽油引擎的作品。在原廠代號M133的動力單元下，展現的是比諸多跑車還要剽悍的381hp/6,000rpm的強勁馬力，以及48.4kgm/2,250-5,000rpm的最大扭力，跟C 43 4MATIC相比就知道GLA 45到底有多麼暴力。這就是為什麼會說GLA 45絕對比想像中還要殺氣騰騰，別忘了在過去的電影《侏羅紀公園》中殺很大的不只是暴龍，還有更令人感到恐懼的迅猛龍，加上7速DCT變速箱的加持，更讓駕馭過程中能夠感受到甚為流利的輸出。另外，千萬別忘記Yellow Night Edition黃夜特仕版，但說句實話見過一次要忘記也很難！

63系列引擎

代表作品：E63 S 4MATIC+ 不過如果說C 43和GLA 45就已經嗆到讓人感到嫑嫑了，那麼房車外觀下卻藏匿著足以和超跑一分高下的E63 S 4MATIC+可就真的是辣到徹底。儘管外觀溫文儒雅，看似不輕易發怒，但越是斯文越不知道藏匿在此般體格下會有著怎麼樣的身手，63系列引擎用在E-Class的身軀下若套用個形象來看就像是說著「Manners Maketh Man（禮儀成就不凡之人）」的金牌特務哈利哈特，可在禮貌、優雅、冷靜下出手卻又犀利並難以戰勝，這就是更讓人想要試圖領教的E63 S 4MATIC+。 採用代號M178的4.0升V8雙渦輪增壓汽油引擎的E63 S 4MATIC+，最大馬力直奔612hp/5,750-6,500rpm，更具備高達86.68kgm/2,500-4,500rpm的能耐，加上輕量化的車體以及4MATIC+的助力，透過AMG Speedshift MCT 9速變速箱讓這款車僅3.4秒便能完成0-100km/h加速，所以這是不是面對超跑也頗具威脅性呢？

63系列引擎GT調校

代表作品：Mercedes-AMG GT R 但坦白說若真要單挑的話，或許最具震攝的莫過於Mercedes-AMG的現行當家扛霸子GT系列了。雖然同樣採用63系列的V8引擎，但趨近於賽道需求的設定下不論是「入門」的GT，又或者是GT S到綠色猛獸GT R，每個都是能夠獨當一面的絕地戰將。以GT R為例，在和E63 S 4MATIC+同樣採用代號M178的4.0升V8雙渦輪增壓汽油引擎下，最大馬力來到585hp/6,250rpm之譜，以及71.4kgm/1,900-5,500rpm的峰值扭力，就帳面數據來看似乎略低於E63 S 4MATIC+，但Mercedes-AMG卻給予這款車更難能可貴的極致均衡。不論是高速的穩定性或過彎的靈活性，加上DCT 7速雙離合器變速箱帶來的快捷加速感，皆讓GT R有著能充分展現Mercedes-AMG性格的華麗動能，也無怪乎極速表現能夠輕鬆上達318km/h，而這也正是此般高性能品牌不斷追求的高速境界。

只是當然身為高端性能品牌，Mercedes-AMG自過往至今也絕不會劃地自限。或許在2017年是AMG的50週年紀念，但2018年的今日人們卻也不住期待這源自賽道基因的名號下能新增陣容。也因此期待NEW X290 Launch的到來，為MercedesAMG再生熱血！
