Urbanworld Film Festival Announces 2023 Lineup

The 27th annual Urbanworld Film Festival's lineup has been announced for the event taking place the first week of November. The five-day occasion is November 1-5 at AMC 34th Street and the SVA Theatre in New York City. The schedule includes the world premiere of A Wu-Tang Experience: Live At Red Rocks Amphitheatre directed by Rza and Gerald Barclay. A conversation with Marvel Studios' The Marvels writer/director and Urbanworld album Nia Acosta is also planned. HBO returns as a Founding Partner and Warner Brothers Discovery is the Prestige Partner. 

Stand Up & Shout: Songs from a Philly High School, an HBO Documentary Films feature, from director Amy Schatz and executive produced by Mike Jackson, John Legend and Ty Stiklorius of Get Lifted Film Co. will screen. Lawman: Bass Reeves, starring and executive produced by David Oyelowo about the first Black US Marshal is scheduled for viewing. Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story will be presented by Amazon Prime and National Geographic Documentary Films is having a youth screening of The Space Race directed by Urbanworld alum Lisa Cortés (Little Richard I Am Everything) and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. 

The work of more Urbanworld alums will be highlighted with To Live And Let Die starring Amin Joseph and Omari Hardwick; Young. Wild. Free. directed by Thembi Banks with Sanaa Lathan and Mike Epps; and Sira, a Berlinale audience winner directed by Apolline Traoré.

ESPN is presenting Black Girls Play from documentary team Joe Brewster and Michéle Stephenson. Disney+ is showcasing six short films from its Disney + Launchpad incubator program of filmmakers including The Ghost, directed by Erica Eng; Black Belts, directed by Spencer Glover; Beautiful, FL, directed by Gabriela Ortega; The Roof, directed by Alexander Bocchieri; Maxine, written and directed by Niki Ang and Project CC, directed by Cashmere Jasmine. 

The almost 100 titles comprises shorts from several known artists including Yvonne Orji's directing debut with Jamaal and Zainab Jah's first film Reunion. Executive producer, Urbanworld alum and writer Nelson George will present Flower, a short film about ballerina Misty Copeland. Benny Boom's A Love Letter To Hip-Hop starring Tariq Trotter aka Black Thought and Part of Me: Anuar Khalifi by Yasiin Bey starring Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) are two of the music-oriented titles.

One of the things you notice about The Satanic Temple pretty quickly is that "slander" just means "things we don't like, especially if they're true", and of course their fourth tenet about "freedom to offend" only ever goes in the one direction

But this "the TV show writers and network should apologize!!" stuff is straight out of the Catholic League. Bill Donahue is embarrassed for them.

Imagine enshrining "the freedom to offend" in your religion, parading around proud of being legally recognized as a religion

...then being so upset about how free speech is actually understood by the law that parody is something that people "get away with."

As we've pointed out before, that episode of the Paramount+ TV show "Evil" was actually rather generous given the actual origins of The Satanic Temple as a Spectacle Films project that just got out of hand.

It was an especially charitable episode given that the two owners of TST set up their T-shirt selling, intellectual property owning for profit corporation United Federation of Churches LLC and years later pursued nonprofit church status for a different entity, "The Satanic Temple (Inc)", after it already had an entity with IRS-approved nonprofit status: Reason Alliance Ltd.

It's just that normal nonprofits have to say where their money is coming and going. And churches don't.

We can't know their hearts, but Lucien Greaves and Cevin Soling probably realized that being so open about turning around and sending money given to their nonprofit Reason Alliance to the for-profit corp United Federation of Churches LLC d/b/a The Satanic Temple would eventually raise some questions. But two entities named "The Satanic Temple" sharing the same website, HQ, and branding, neither one reporting its finances publicly? Maybe no one would notice.

By comparison, the TV show "Evil" ends up being extraordinarily charitable to their universe's "The New Ministry of Satan", all things considered.

In addition to "Evil" making sure their Baphomet statue was quite distinct from TST's Instagram prop, that may be why The Satanic Temple is unlikely to come after CBS or Paramount+ the same way it went after Netflix and Warner Bros.

Soling and Greaves don't actually want a news story that would draw attention to just what the hell they're doing with all of those front companies and all that damn money they keep bringing in.

Note: We're not going to link back to the Twitter conversation, even tho it is public, b/c the people having it mostly aren't anybody. It's just representative of where TST's core members are at this point, and the level of paranoia they're operating at.

Negative things about their chosen organization couldn't possibly be valid; it must be that some secret group of enemies is organizing against them, and they're beset on all sides, and it's SLANDER to point out stuff their glorious leaders said in the past. Etc.

It's funny how hypocritical they are about it, but it's also really sad, and ultimately, it's dangerous and harmful. And we hope everyone gets out without being hurt too badly or helping TST keep hurting others badly.

Den of Geek directly notes the similarities between "Graham Lucien" and LG in their recap. I haven't watched the episode, but it sure looks like a deliberate attempt to raise doubt about Greaves as a faith leader and TST as a legitimate religion.

i agree that they should apologize. This episode (haven’t watched any of the rest of the show) was some of the laziest writing i’ve ever endured. One episode felt like an eternity **tiniest of silver-linings** this show is so fucking cheesy, only a fool would take it seriously.

Happy Anniversary "One Step Closer" (September 28th, 2000)❤

"One Step Closer" is the debut single by the American rock band Linkin Park. It was released as the first single and second track of their debut album, Hybrid Theory. The song was featured in the 2008 music video games Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades, and the soundtrack to the 2000 film Dracula 2000 in the end credits.

A remixed version of the song entitled "1Stp Klosr" was featured on Linkin Park's remix album, Reanimation.

This song was merged with another song off Hybrid Theory, "Points of Authority" and "99 Problems" by Jay-Z on the EP Collision Course.

Joe Hahn of Linkin Park and director Gregory Dark came up with the concept for the video. The original version of the video was supposedly meant to be live footage of the band with fans (similar to their music video for "Faint").

The video was directed by Gregory Dark and shot in Los Angeles, sixty-three feet underground in an abandoned LA Subway tunnel, that is adjacent to an abandoned V.A. hospital. The video starts out with a group of teenage friends hanging out around a dark alley. Two of them (the male is played by local LA artist Tony Acosta who goes by the moniker "TonyMech") follow a strange man wearing a black hooded robe into a door which leads them to a dark, misty room where the band is playing. Monk-like men are performing martial arts moves throughout the video. Midway through the song, they knock over a crate, drawing the attention of the monk-like men, causing them to flee the tunnel. Eventually the strange man appears at the end of the video. While Bennington screams the songs bridge, he is also upside-down as if gravity is inverted for him.[4]

Stand-in bassist Scott Koziol can be seen in several shots in the video.

"One Step Closer" is the only Linkin Park music video to be filmed with SD cameras, which can be seen in 480p and is available in the US exclusively on the Warner Bros. Records YouTube channel.

The headline is a little inaccurate. It’s not Trump’s threats themselves--which are protected speech under the First Amendment--but Trump’s actual abuse of the powers of the federal government to intimidate and “stifle exercise of the constitutional protections of free speech and a free press.”

“President Trump has directed his threats and retaliatory actions at specific outlets whose content and viewpoints he views as hostile. As a result, journalists who report on the president or his Administration reasonably believe they face a credible threat of government retaliation for carrying out the duties of their profession. ... His actions seek to accomplish indirectly what the president cannot do directly: impede professional and investigative journalism, and silence criticism.”

Some concrete examples of Trump’s “acts that cause reasonable journalists to believe that there are instances in which government power will be used to retaliate against critical speech”:

“Trump repeatedly called for action to punish the online retailer Amazon because Jeff Bezos, its chief shareholder and CEO, owns the Washington Post, whose accurate coverage of his Administration the president finds objectionable … The president then followed through on his threats and issued an executive order directing the U.S. Postal Service to review its financial practices, including the shipping rates it offers companies like Amazon … He then personally directed the U.S. Postmaster General to double the rate the Postal Service charges Amazon and other firms to ship packages. On October 11, 2018, the Postal Service announced proposed rate increases, including a proposed 12% increase for the Parcel Select service used by Amazon.”

“When Trump first learned during the 2016 campaign that CNN’s parent company, Time Warner, planned to merge with AT&T, he publicly threatened to use the Justice Department’s antitrust merger-review process to retaliate against CNN for its news coverage. Following Defendant Trump’s election, the Justice Department sued to block the merger, despite a long track record of not opposing vertical mergers like the one proposed between Time Warner and AT&T.”

“He [Trump] has threatened to take away White House press credentials of reporters whose coverage displeases him and has threatened to challenge NBC’s and other television stations’ broadcast licenses in retaliation for coverage he disliked. In July 2018, the White House banned CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins from a Rose Garden press conference for asking questions the White House deemed ‘inappropriate.’”

The lawsuit seeks a declaration that Trump’s retaliatory acts (not his threats) violate the First Amendment, and an order prohibiting Trump from “directing any officer, employee, agency, or other agent or instrumentality of the United States government to take any action against any person or entity in retaliation for speech that the president or his Administration do not like.”

In other words, Trump can continue to bully, insult, and threaten his critics all he likes... so long as the judiciary takes away his power to retaliate against them.

[CULTURA] Herramienta audiovisual: series

A lo largo de los últimos años las series como medio de entretenimiento han ido aumentando su popularidad, siendo a día de hoy equiparables en audiencia y calidad visual al cine, es más estas han llegado a superar en audiencia mediática al séptimo arte obteniendo una mayor relevancia, tanto es así que se han creado plataformas con el objetivo de conglomerar grandes cantidades de las mismas, así es el caso de Netflix, Amazon prime, HBO o la reciente Disney plus, todas estas ofrecen tanto películas como series, y son precisamente las series el atractivo principal de estas plataformas. Así mismo Leduc (2017) y Acosta (2017) señalan que las series pueden ser usadas como un método para hacer pensar y reflexionar a los alumnos, obviamente refiriéndose a formatos de series concretas. Como un ejemplo los autores señalaron la serie española Merlí, la cual se dedica hacer reflexiones filosóficas y morales de la vida.

 Las series se pueden convertir en herramientas pedagógicas no solo de aprendizaje si no de concienciación, además estas cuentan con una gran ventaja, su formato a través de episodios permite a los autores no solo atraer más al espectador, les permite abarcar un mayor número de temas y de ideas que permitan entregar un mensaje más profundo, y es este último concepto el que hace de las series una herramienta tan perfecta para el trabajo pedagógico sobre el ciberbullying.

 La visibilidad del ciberbullying en las series es bastante limitada, lo cual es posible bajo dos factores, siendo uno que el ciberbullying es una actividad relativamente reciente y que por otro lado la fama y popularidad de las series también es reciente, de todas maneras existen series que tratan este tema de forma directa.

Pequeñas mentirosas

Pequeñas mentirosas es una serie producida por la Warner Bros. Television, que consta de 7 temporadas durante las cuales se desarrollan diferentes sucesos como la desaparición de una chica en el instituto, sin embargo al margen de estos sucesos a lo largo de la serie las protagonistas son amenazadas y extorsionadas por otro personaje a través de las redes sociales donde amenaza con contar sucesos que puedan alterar su estatus social. Sabiendo esto se puede afirmar que el acosador/a encajaría dentro de los tipos de ciberbullying llamados dissing, doxing y enmascaramiento, siendo el primero de estos la difusión de información cruel o falsa de una persona, el segundo consiste en la publicación de información privada, y el ultimo es tratar de intimidar a una persona valiéndose del anonimato de internet.

 La serie muestra como un persona es capaz de hacer un daño desproporcionado a otra persona con el uso de las redes sociales, y como en la sociedad actual en la que vivimos se tiene muy en cuenta el estatus social y como la gente te ve. La serie fuera de sus frivolidades muestra claramente cuanto daño hace la información en las redes sociales y como afecta esto a los entornos sociales y amistades. (Serie disponible en HBO)

Por trece razones

Por trece razones es una serie producida y distribuida por Netflix, que consta de 4 temporadas, sin embargo, de estas la que posee mayor relación con el tema que se está abordando es la primera. La serie cuenta  la historia de Hannah Baker, una adolescente que se muda a un pueblo de estados unidos, el problema se genera cuando tras salir con un chico del instituto este cuelga distintas fotos de ella. En esas fotos se le veía la ropa interior lo que hizo que en las redes sociales y en el instituto se burlasen e insultasen deliberadamente. Más adelante son colgadas otras fotos en las que se la veía con una compañera de clase besándose, lo que desembocó en otra retahíla de insultos y burlas, la serie prosigue con otros tantos problemas que degeneran en el suicidio de la adolescente.

 En esta serie está muy presente el modo en el que la protagonista es acosada, siendo el ciberbullying solo uno de estos métodos, destacando los tipos de ciberbullying dissing y doxing, los cuales consisten en la exposición de material privado u cruel de la víctima a través de la redes sociales desembocando en los insultos o burlas por el resto de usuarios de la plataformas.

La serie es una crítica directa la bullying en todos sus ámbitos y las consecuencias tan nefastas que este genera, a su vez critican la ineptitud de los centros educativos para afrontar estos temas, prevenirlos o detectarlos, también muestra de manera directa las consecuencias adversas que se generan no solo hacia la familia de la víctima, sino además hacia los/as artífices del problema además de al centro y su profesorado.(Serie disponible a través de Netflix)

El objetivo principal de esta propuesta es que el alumnado visualice unos episodios concretos de una de estas series (los episodios serán de la primera temporada de la serie “Por trece razones” el 1, 2 y 3 debido a su importancia dentro del tema tratado) para así posteriormente realizar diversos debates que ayuden a la mejor comprensión del tema tratado, así como las distintas posturas de los alumnos/as acerca del mismo. Al realizar un debate el alumnado desarrolla su opinión sobre el tema, ya que es obligado/a  pensar razonamientos sobre su postura y defenderla ante el resto de la clase. En definitiva y a modo de conclusión la visualización de las series y posterior debate genera una situación particular en la que en primera instancia y a través de la serie empatizarán con los personajes, tras esto que desarrolle un debate generará una mayor concienciación por parte del alumnado.

 Las preguntas para generar el debate son las que siguen:

¿Creen que el ciberbullying es peligroso?

¿Son las redes sociales el problema por el que se genera el ciberbullying?

¿Los que no originan pero si participan en este acto, son igual de culpables como los que crean este ciberbullying?

En pantalla gigante y hermoso sonido. -21 horas, el clásico del teatro local "CRUDO Humor en BRUTO". El espectáculo de improvisaciones teatrales que ya lleva 3 años en cartel en la región se presentará con su formato de historias improvisadas (inventadas en el momento) con pequeñas consignas que el publico escribirá en un pequeño papel. Brenda Rimbert, Otti Salas y Martin Were Acosta ponen toda su imaginación e histrionismo para interpretar con una sola certeza, habrá de que reírse. En la parte técnica y de asistencia estarán Martin Vidondo y Lala Graffigna.
