Trying to integrate a meta-narrative to BlackSails is hard because it obviously isn't historical. That said, Black Sails always skirts the truth when they can. Blackbeard's death was an interesting example of being historically inaccurate but playing to the myth of the person involved.
The "legend" goes that after Blackbeard was killed, his body swam around the ship 3 times before finally sinking beneath the waves forever. (Gotta love the drama of 18th century pamphlets.)
It's interesting that the Black Sails interpretation keeps the 3 times "around" the ship element, but also acts as a heart of the narrative myth in the future. By implying that the terror was actually reversed on the killing crew (and in this story, Rogers as well) and that the myth was spawned by the sheer tenacity of Blackbeard, the torture becomes the means of perpetuating the legend of Blackbeard instead of its intended meaning of humiliating and demeaning an opposition leader.
"Haven't you heard? Blackbeard's dead body was so full of hate, it swam around the ship three times."
Blackbeard's death, instead of making the Pirate menace go away quietly, became the key to the lasting legacy of BlackBeard's legendary myth.
Of course, to Flint's point, that makes a monster out of a regular man to keep the populace in line, which is the whole point of the show. Still, I thought it was an interesting aspect.
the keelhauling scene is absolutely horrifying but i absolutely watch it every time im doing a rewatch like it's terrible and terrifying but there's really smth abt teach just getting up every time and having rogers be humiliated that his attempt at instilling terror in the crew is failing just because this man refuses to lie down and die. like rogers can be frightening but he's also deeply pathetic and he is not invincible. his torture of teach is stomach turning to everyone watching but in the end it's still ineffective. teach was bleeding and gasping for breath and he still fucking beat rogers.

Caleb’s tattoo (shoulder edition)
XII.
what can this imply?
several discussions are pointing to the following:
NASA’s space project Gemini 12 (Caleb’s a gemini)
MC being test subject 001 and Caleb 002
«The hanged man» being tarot card number 12.
Guess who has the hanged man as a card in Abyssal Chaos? Friggin Caleb.
Guess that it means? Martyrdom. Ultimate surrender. Sacrifice for the greater good. HELLO REF BOND CARD WHERE U AT
possible myth?

And when I was hanged between earth and heaven they lifted up their heads to see me. And they were exalted, for their heads had never before been lifted.
Personal piece :) The compression may be hiding this, but written on the underside of the antelope's skin is "un jour je serai de retour près de toi" ('one day I will return to your side'), which is something I have been turning over in my brain a lot as of late.
Hope you're all taking care of yourselves!!

Saw someone making a joke about how Odysseus confronting the suitors happens when he’s naked and no hate for the joke I get that a lot of people think public nudity is funny but like… that part of the story is really important to me.
This is a man that has been on a journey and fucked over and changed and played with by fate for years to the point where he is almost forced to strip his identity and rebuild it for survival. When he returns to his Home Land yes he is wearing a disguise but he was also the one raining king of Ithaca. No one recognized his face, his voice, the only one to truly recognize him was his neglected and dying dog. When he reveals his true self he literally has to strip himself bare before any one realizes.
The idea of the thing that kept you alive and kept you fighting being the same thing that makes it easier to strip your core beliefs and personality bare and rebuild yourself into something not even you can recognize in the end is really impactful for me.
