Sweetie Little Jean (Cage the Elephant)
Has melancholy taken you for good?/You know that I would save you if I could/Watched your laughter turn to tears/Then you vanished in thin air/Well we pinned your missing person’s picture up/On every mother-loving post/How’s it feel to be a ghost?/You’re the one I love the most
"This song is based on a real tragedy that happened to one of the band’s members, where a childhood friend of his was abducted and killed. This song makes me feel so much and I imagine it’s only a fraction of how much pain both he and the friend felt. How can you not get chills hearing the pleads in the chorus, especially when the lyrics change optimistically from bones to breast, then back to bones in a form of crushing acceptance and pain,,,,,,, augh"
Willard! (Will Wood)
You know I couldn't hurt a fly, my friend/I'm not the type to step on ants/I've nearly cried for moths that die in porchlight lamps/More for the plights of mice than men/See, I myself have been stepped on so many times/It's started to feel like my place/I've failed to fit into those nests that scrape the sky/Is there room for me in your cage?
"First off: super relatable lyrics about being incapable of comprehending humans and finding better company in animals, I can't listen to them without crying. Second: the musical vibe to it makes it feel grand but at the same time private and personal like we're listening to someone's deepest inner thoughts. Third: the context. In the song, the singer is talking to his pet rat, Socrates. Will wrote this song after his pet rat Mr. Algernon Socrates Boy passed away."

Will Wood (and the Tapeworms) Songs as Ride the Cyclone Characters!
Recently decided to wade through Will Wood's discography more and I think some of the songs by the 30-something year old dude really embody them
How this half asleep rant will work:
[Character]: [Song(s)]
Explanation of why song is chosen
"Certain excerpts from the song I think embody the goober chosen"
Note: all songs wils be linked when they're written (mostly as youtube lyric videos), also this will probably be very long
Ocean O'Connell Rosenburg: The Main Character
Local ‘gifted kid’ teenager has yet to find out that the world doesn't revolve around her and stepping on anyone who doesn't fit in with her isn’t okay, more at 7
"I mean, imagine if protagonists just died in the first scene"
"I loot plot armor from NPC’s / Well, they are to me"
Noel Gruber: Suburbia Overture / Greetings from Mary Bell Township! / (Vampire) Culture / Love Me, Normally
This song (in my opinion) is really the embodiment of Noel's character. attempting to fit in, being told to "tone it down" by his mother until eventually arriving in the afterlife and essentially going "fuck it, we ball" with Noel's Lament (and Vampire Culture in this allegory) until eventually arriving at a state of peace with Love Me, Normally/It's Just a Ride
"a snowflake only matters in a blizzard"
Mischa Bachinski: 6up 5oh Cop-Out (Pro / Con & ¡Aikido! (Neurotic / Erotic)
6up 5oh with it's plot(?) of running from the police and proceeding to get mistreated by them is how Mischa is viewed by essentially everyone is Saskatchewan (and to an extent how he lets them see him). While ¡Aikido!, is more of his 'passion' side, specifically with Talia. The more aggressive reprise at the end of Aikido in the 2020 remaster also reminds me allot of the techno section of 'Talia'.
"It's never too late to embrace your fate"
"So we can touch instead of feel"
Ricky Potts: White Noise & Dr. Sunshine Is Dead
Imagine being so forgotten by everyone around you so the innocent bean stereotype is put on you automatically despite the fact that you’re real personality is far from that and then having a mini identity crisis over it
"You're not meant to sing along"
"I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between"
Jane Doe: Big Fat Bitchie’s Blueberry Pie, Christmas Tree, and Recreational Jell-o Emporium a.k.a. “Mr. Boy is on the Roof Again” (Feat. Pasta by Sneakers McSqueakers) [From “B.F.B.’s B-Sides: Bagel Batches, Marsh-Mallows, & Barsh-Mallows”]
No thoughts, story, or plot, just funky carnival music
Constance Blackwood: Falling Up
This song is essentially 'Sugar Cloud' but more melancholy. This is what I'd imagine a song about Constance's life before she died would be about, or Constance's Monologue in song form. What especially reminded me of her monologue was the rapid fire listing of objects and even the title 'Falling Up' being repeated in the song feeling like the roller coaster when it derailed. They're falling but being upside down it feels more like they're flying.
"You make a wish upon the dead, but turn and call it a weed"
"Much larger than life, 'cause from such height / Life looks awful small"
"Well, I cry on skies of blue linoleum, Clouds o' spilled milk"
Penny Lamb: Willard!
Aspiring animal conservationist doesn't know how to relate to "normal" people partially due to her upbringing. Parts of the song were the singer wants animal traits the make their life easier reminds me of Penny's whole "I vomit fire" thing before absolutely destroying JK-47
“Until frustration makes me wish my teeth were sharp as yours”
“I've never understood what humans do and want / It's quite confusing to me to try to connect / Never learned how I should feel, instincts somehow stunted”
Extra characters outside of the choir:
I'll go less in depth for these as i think most of these are self-explanatory
Karnak: Memento Mori: the most important thing in the world
funky sentient machine is constantly aware of his imminent death and decides to be a goofy goober because of it
Virgil: Tomcat Disposables
rat just wants to vibe and chew on a power cable. oopsies he's dead now
Monique Gibeau: White Knuckle Jerk & Front Street
oh em gee she's so gorgeous and dangerous and the world described in Noel's Lament is very gritty and a little gross
Ezra Lamb: Euthanasia (Live)
this mostly feeds into my hc that Ezra ditched school to go to the fair with the choir and had to see his sister get beheaded, being completely inconsolable, and not being listened to because he's "a kid looking for attention"
It's the end yay!!
That's the end folks! I really enjoyed making this (i am a very big fan of both rtc and will wood) there were a lot of other songs i wanted to include (skeleton appreciation day, i/me/myself etc.) but didn't because either
a. they fit too many characters for me to just pin one to them or
b. the character already had two songs assigned to them
i hope anybody reading this is having a good day/night and listens to will wood more in the future ig
#please let me know if there are any spelling/grammar mistakes#also if any of the links don't work#this drained like all of my computer battery lol#now for all the fandom tags (yipee)#ride the cyclone#rtc#rtc musical#rtc jane doe#ocean o'connell rosenberg#noel gruber#mischa bachinski#constance blackwood#jane doe rtc#ricky potts#ezra lamb#penny lamb

i wanna know if this is common knowledge among will wood fans- some songs definently come in pairs, right?
self- and -ish are obvious, but then there's also tomcat disposables and willard!, which i kind of consider the same story. both songs seem to be from the perspective of someone who feels outcast or different from everyone around them, to a degree where they relate to (or see themselves as) more animal than human. although, tomcat disposables seems to be about trying your best to fit in, but failing to, whereas willard! is more about giving up on trying to fit in, embracing what makes you different, maybe even thinking what makes you different makes you better. the end of willard! also references tomcat disposables directly through instruments, having the tomcat disposables melody at the very end.
then there's also hand me my shovel, i'm going in! and the song with five names, which are the same idea presented from two different points of view. both songs also use digging as a metaphor for introspection, hand me my shovel being explicitly pro-introspection, whereas 5 names seems to be against it. the choruses of both songs have such similar lyrics, yet seem to disagree: "this is not enough, this is not enough to prove it yet! no, i need to hit the bottom." "you could break a shovel when you break new ground; you dig dirt up when you dig deep down. you should know better than that by now, it's not profound to know that you could never know." these are two sides of essencially the same argument: should you try to find out who you are, or not?
dr. sunshine is dead and cotard's solution also seem connected, both by their theme and by the cotard's solution piano melody (and the accompanying lyrics) also being at the end of dr. sunshine. both songs have something to do with death, more specifically someone believing they're dead (this is cotard's delusion, which the first song gets its name from). cotard's solution is very clearly from the perspective of someone who believes that they are dead. it's also heavily implied this person is suicidal, with lyrics like "i wish that i were dead" and "i wanna make my murder look like a suicide", and the backing vocals singing "kill me" towards the end. i think this is related to the person's delusion; the suicidality almost presents itself as body dysphoria in their case, because they truly believe they are dead, so being inside a body that is still very much alive feels wrong (presented through lyrics like "you do the math, who's looking back? that's not me!" and "check in the mirror to see how i look; i look different in different ways.") the protagonist of dr. sunshine is dead seems to have very similar thoughts: "for your self-portraits, sign another name. who should i be then, if i'll never be the same?". dr. sunshine seems to be more about re-inventing yourself, thinking that the person you used to be is dead, and now you must resume a new identity. i'm not sure if this sort of thinking it directly related to cotard's delusion (i'm by no means an expert, i'm just some guy on the internet who really likes analyzing songs), but it does seem directly related to cotard's solution.
songs that might not be directly connected but i still think are worth mentioning include chemical overreaction and skeleton appreciation day. the last verse of chemical overreaction follows the same chord progression as skeleton appreciation day; you can hear the same melody in the background, played by an electric guitar. the themes of the two songs seem seperate, though.

Another Will Wood analysis while I edit a load of personal pieces and try to find an internship! I have a few ideas for this account >:]
The Impact of Masculinism on “Willard!”
“Willard!” is a unique song on an already wildly diverse album. This song, the only one that draws inspiration from a separate piece of media, tells the story of Willard Stiles, a lonely man who befriends rats to cope. The song offers an introspective view of Stiles’s view of humanity and how distanced he views himself. Stiles is affected by the masculinist people around him, which causes him to regard his sensitivities as something that makes him “other.” In the movie, Willard’s boss, Martin, constantly cites his masculinity as his reason for tormenting Stiles. In the song, Willard uses traditional male expectations self-deprecatingly.
Stiles opens the song like an admission of guilt, “You know I couldn’t hurt a fly, my friend / I’m not the type to step on ants” (Line 1). Being insecure about being non-violent is a common trait among men who are in highly masculine environments. Typical gender norms insist that men are to be the aggressors or unafraid of bloodshed. This machismo bloodlust is the foundation of masculinist ideals. A “good” man should strive for dominance over everything: the workplace, the home, and public spaces. Willard is not a man who strives for anything. He knows he can not fit in with the aggressive men at his office, stating, “I've failed to fit in into those nests that scrape the sky / Is there room for me in your cage?” (Line 6) He is also embarrassed about his emotional displays, namely, “I've nearly cried for moths that die at porchlight lamps,” and “Just seem haunted by my stupid urge to protect” (Lines 3 and 22). His sympathetic nature is a target for most of the people in Stiles’s life: his mother, who insists he kills his rats; his coworkers, who mock him; and his boss, who disparages him.
Like most men who struggle to fit into the masculine mold, Stiles feels an undue amount of shame. Feminism is for Everybody explains this reaction. It states, “These men identified themselves as victims of sexism, working to liberate men. They identified rigid sex roles as the primary source of their victimization…” (Hooks). As the song continues, Stiles starts to reject his role as a masculine man before extracting himself from humanity altogether. He ostracizes himself, hiding in closets with his rats and becoming a recluse. He states, “They'll call me crazy, but their words all seem made up to me / Maybe they just need more friendship like yours” (Line 24) and then regresses further into, “You might seem behind bars, but friend, this cage is inside out” (Line 35). The song concludes with a nod to the source material, quoting the climactic scene in which Willard uses his rats to murder Martin. This final scene solidifies the impact masculinity has had on Willard. He devolves from a man too timid to step on an ant to a man capable of premeditated murder. Willard is unfulfilled by his revenge and driven to madness, as Hooks predicts, claiming, “Many men are anguished because they do not engage the liberating critiques that could enable them to face that these promises were rooted in injustice and domination and even when fulfilled have never led men to glory” (Hooks).

sneaks in here to yap about will wood
did you know hes been in bands before will wood and the tapeworms? he was in a verbal equinox, then he formed the stereosexuals with jonation maisto (whose helped with some of his newer music!) theres also two more in there, jamface and strange thick but i dont know too much about either other than will wood was in them.
a lot of will woods songs are also connected from what ive listened to
in skeleton appreciation day, will wood sings "a selfish book is always open" then his next album is named "self-ish"
in your body my temple, will wood sings "when the waters run red" which could be a reference to the lyric "the drunk-tanks blood red" in the song 6up 5oh Copout
in falling up, will wood sings "i grew up in suburbia" and then of course, theres suburbia overtune
in the first step, will wood sings "i dont want to be an organ donor" which could be hin referencing the stereosexuals song 1fish2fish
thats about all the things ive seen that are connected, but some of his lyrics could also be references to his older songs in the stereosexuals, as theres only been 3 publicly released. will has said the other 12 were lost on an old hard drive, but for all we know he could be lying. the stereosexuals used to be on spotify, but arent anymore for some reason, so you can really only listen to it youtube sadly.
will wood has 3 songs related to rats in "in case i make it," which are tomcat disposables, euthansia, and willard!
then in his live album "in case i die" he has two songs that weren't released, which were "and if i did, you deserved it" and "misanthropologist"
he also has a podcast named "life in the world to come" which he does with his friend chris dunne, which is about well, life in the world to come. people send questions in and the two answer them, but like most of the time most of it is them yapping, but im not complaining.
:3 (also, explain the plot of the four swords manga??? you need to go to a LIBRARY!!)
oh wow i knew like none of this
i mean i knew he had a lot of repeating themes/lyrics but not the other stuff
thanks for sharing dude 🫶
(ALSO IVE CHECKED they dont HAVE IT at the library. but someone sent me the link so no worries)
