[Lyrics & translation under cut]
ENGLISH:
Doodled textbooks and myself looking outside all the time. Sky above a skyscraper, I dreamed unreachable dream. I want to break the door of my feelings that have no way out. If I smoke behind the school building, there's no way of escape.
We will crouch down, gather in a lump while turning our backs against adults. I will glare at adults who doesn't know anything about us. And my friends plan to run away from home tonight. Anyway, I don't want to go back to school or home anymore. I'm trembling without even knowing what I am. It's a night of fifteen years old.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I didn't want to be tied up by anyone, I felt free when I ran away from everything on this night. It's a night of fifteen years old.
Cold wind, cold body, I miss people. I will run past the house of that sleeping girl, while whispering goodbye. In the dark, vending machine stood alone. Warmth that you can buy for 100 yen, I will tightly grasp hot canned coffee.
I don't know how love ends, but that girl and I have always dreamed of a future together. Adults told me to give up my love, but I don't like it at all. If those boring lessons are everything we have, What a petty, what a meaningless, what a powerless fifteen years old.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I will smoke a freshly learned cigarette. I continued to seek freedom while staring at the starry sky. A fifteen years old night.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I didn't want to be tied up by anyone, I felt free when I ran away from everything on this night. It's a night of fifteen years old.

サンセット・ベンチ
(Sunset Bench)
English Translation:
My left arm is warm and when I turn my face, the wind
Makes your hair gently tickle my cheek
Softly, softly, softly
You’re so excited next to me
That even the spilled canned coffee
That’s cooling off in my hands
Seems to be saying something
Forever, always and forever
I want you to be by my side, just like this
Even though I search for the words to tell you that
I swallow them down when you smile
You’re beautiful
“I came wearing that lavender skirt
You like again today”
You say, while grasping the hem and waving it around
Flutter flutter flutter
I felt it every time you moved
Because your sweet fragrance pierces my heart
I want to hold you, right now, and tell you
Without saying why, just that
I love you, I’ll always love you
I can’t fight it, I’m overflowing with affection
When the words “It looks really good on you”
Came out instead
You smiled
And hid your face from me
Your bashful smile, your sulking profile,
And your voice when you cackle like a child
I want to see all of that here, so
I’ll protect you, so that you can keep being yourself
Can we come here again?
Forever, always and forever
I want you to be by my side, just like this
After those words
You cried a little while nodding
And I hugged your shoulder

Masyado Pang Maaga.
Since we broke up, I really haven't thought about Ben&Ben being our thing pero there was this one time na I found myself singing Bibingka then I heard your voice, singing the "Ang sabi nila—bilhan mo na siya ng bibingka" saka ko na realize na it was OUR thing, their songs were my favorite thing to hear because of you—unknowingly. Bibingka, dahil ikaw kasama ko when I wanted to complete the simbang gabi kahit na 'di naman ako Catholic kasi aside sa I secretly wanted to grow closer to church ulit, I was looking forward to our pre or post simbang gabi coffee—sa Starbucks sa Ayala, the very reason din bakit we had a journal, the very reason why I have a heckton of stickers kasi we used to stick them to decorate our journal. [First year without you, I didn’t get a journal, I chose the tumbler over journal bc wala naman na akong masusulat. I got two tumblers though and ‘til now, they are just displayed above my fridge, collecting dust. Second year without you, I intentionally avoided Starbucks during ber months or whenever I’d buy coffee from their, I said no to the stickers.]
Also, I think it was Baiya, our first concert together, which made Ben&Ben our thing.
Leaves, kasi it was in your house when we shoot using that song with TTSC and it was extra memorable because it was for our grad, not knowing na grad sz kita bibitawan.
Araw-Araw, you used to hum it din a lot—to me, "Mahiwaga Pipiliin ka sa araw-araw. Kasi we used to choose each other sa araw-araw kahit anong mangyari. I used to choose you araw-raw until I didn't.
Ride Home, Sa Susunod na Habang Buhay—The Ones We Once Loved, the very last. When it was released, you reposted din daw, I felt like I was able to relate to this song kasi I thought I really wanted to see you go, I thought I am way happier to be alone, I thought kailangan kong unahin magulo kong mundo, pero nagkamali pala ako. Letting you go means letting US go. More than half of me was gone.
Tonight, wala lang, na isip ko lang i-play 'yong Ben&Ben songs on Spotify then Masyado Pang Maaga played—"Parang kay bilis ng 'yong pag-alis, teka lang teka lang teka lang muna. Sa'n nagkamali pwede bang bumawi..." the lyrics are so simple pero I suddenly heard you saying them to me. I immediately felt the guilty rushing back to me. I really did you wrong no? Kasi even my body admits it, even my subconscious mind still stores it and from time to time, manages to push the guilt back as my main thought.
I am so sorry, LJ. Sa araw-araw na ginawa ng Diyos, kinakain pa rin ako ng guilt. 'Di ko mapapakita, wala na akong chance at karapatan para gawin pa 'yon, pero God knows how much I am suffering because of the guilt. Akala ko I just lost my rest, it was my whole world that I let go pala. I am so sorry. You deserve the happiness you're getting in your new changed life.
God will heal me. I know.
For now, hayaan mo lang akong sulatan ka, kahit dito lang.

Express Your Love this Chocolate Day: Romantic Shayari for Your Husband
Chocolate Day blooms with the promise of sweetness, akin to the tenderness in romantic relationships. It's the perfect time to indulge in the richness of love and affection, much like savoring a fine piece of chocolate that melts in your mouth, dissolving all worries. Are you pondering over how to express those depth-filled emotions to your husband? This Chocolate Day, let the timeworn beauty of shayari (poetry) encapsulate your love. Here's a spin on how to use "Express Your Love this Chocolate Day for husband : Romantic Shayari for Your Husband" to capture his heart once more.
The Essence of Shayari in Expressing Love
Shayari, an integral part of Indian literary tradition, is a way to convey emotions through rhythmic words. It’s the lyrical thread that connects hearts, the melody that resonates with love. A well-crafted shayari has the power to express complex feelings in simple, yet poignant verses. On Chocolate Day, traditional gifts of chocolate coupled with the richness of words can create a memory cherished for years.
Crafting Your Shayari
When creating shayari for your husband, draw inspiration from the little things - the shared smiles over morning coffee, the comfort of silent companionship, the laughter and the struggles you've weathered together. Your shayari doesn't have to follow strict rules; it just needs to reflect your genuine emotions.
Here’s how you can begin:
Find inspiration in your journey together
Think of metaphors that relate to chocolates and sweetness
Play with rhymes and rhythms
Keep it heartfelt and genuine
Sample Shayari for Inspiration
To give you a kickstart, here are a few chocolate day-inspired shayaris you can use or draw inspiration from:
"Chocolate ki mithaas ho tum, Meri zindagi ka ehsaas ho tum, Chocolate Day hai aaya, Tumse har khushi mein baantne ko dil chahta hai."
(You are the sweetness of chocolate, the essence of my life. Chocolate Day has arrived, and my heart desires to share every joy with you.)
"Jaise cocoa ka harmony, Waise hi hamari togetherness ki story, Is Chocolate Day pe keh doon, Tere pyaar se hi meri duniya hai roshan."
(Just like the harmony of cocoa, is the story of our togetherness. This Chocolate Day I confess, It is with your love that my world shines bright.)
Celebrating Your Love
On Chocolate Day, after gifting your husband his favorite chocolates, take a moment and recite the shayari you wrote. The spoken words, combined with the depth of your voice, enhance the intimacy and emotional resonance of the gift. Your effort in crafting these lines will not only surprise him but also let him know that he is treasured beyond the tangible gifts.
In Conclusion
"Express Your Love this Chocolate Day: Romantic Shayari for Your Husband" is much more than a phrase; it's a gesture, an expression of deepest affections and an emblem of the sweet journey you share. It's an assurance that even the days not dedicated to love will be full of its expressions, as enduring and delightful as chocolate itself. Let this Chocolate Day bloom with words and emotions, creating a tale as timeless as the bond you both share.

Sunlight
A TREASURE alternate universe (AU) where Asahi has a cousin, who is half-Japanese/half-Filipino, that he is close to named Akira. This is a slice of life look of Akira's relationship with TREASURE. While some events may follow canon, this work is purely fictional and for entertainment purposes only. Any similarities with the real people based off of these stories are purely coincidence.
Chapter 1
The name Asahi is primarily a male name of Japanese origin that means Morning, Sunlight.
In Thai, Akira or Arkira (Thai: อาคิรา, อาคีรา, อาคีระ) is a unisex name meaning 'the sun' or 'sunlight'.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Akira leans over her desk while writing potential song lyrics in her notebook when her phone rings. She pauses and stares at her phone which indicates 🤖 was trying to FaceTime her. She taps her pen against the table and her brows furrow as she mulls over answering it before swiping to the right. She answers in Japanese, “Moshi moshi?”
She sees her cousin in his studio with two of his members eating snacks at the coffee table; seems like they called her from his mac. A chorus of greetings accompany them waving at her from the table.
“Ki-chaaaan!” "Noona!" "Nee-chan!"
Akira grins and waves at Jeongwoo and Haruto, “Ru-chan, how are you? I have something for Ai-chan that I'll give to you once you get here.” Haruto smiles and nods at her.
“Ki-chan...” Asahi looks at her with a pained look on his face, “I think I need you to teach us more Tagalog words.” Jeongwoo frantically nods across him. She rolls her eyes and tells him they don't need any more and just needs to practice sounding out the ones she sent over the previous week. He pouts at her statement, and she threatens to end the call if he doesn’t quit being a baby.
“Ok, let's start with the very basics from the list like kumusta ka or salamat for the others, you already know this Hi-kun.” They start sounding out the greetings and phrases when Jeongwoo groans, “Will I remember how to say all of this when we get there?” and Akira smiles at him and replies in English, “Don't worry Woo, you can always use English there; it's an official language in The Philippines after all.”
The door suddenly opens, and Yoshi enters the studio, telling the occupants that practice will start in 30 minutes.
“Yoshi-kun!!!! Have you practiced your Tagalog yet?” she beams at him while waving.
Yoshi smiles at the monitor and greets her gently before shaking his head saying they’ve been busy with rehearsals, so he never got the chance. Akira smirks and beckons for him to join them before they need to leave for practice, “You need to get them right to get your fans’ hearts fluttering.” Asahi moves to his desk chair and Yoshi takes his place on the couch. Asahi complains on why she's all sunshine and flowers when it comes to Yoshi and she rolls her eyes at him while telling him no one can beat the anime prince as her favorite. Yoshi just laughs as he replies to her, "I thought Kyu was your favorite? He was your YGTB crush after all." Akira quickly shuts him down - I'm already over it - while the others laugh. She clears her throat and steers them back to the Tagalog lessons.
While they were repeating kumusta ka and mahal kita between conversations around their itinerary, Akira starts thinking of their upcoming visit to Manila and Bangkok when Akira pauses and excitedly asked them if they asked their Lisa-sunbaenim for help with Thai words and Asahi scoffs saying she was too busy for that; there was another Thai staff who helped them out. Akira deflates and turns back to doodle on her notebook while Haruto continues to practice saying maganda. "Now, who's being a baby Ki-chan? For someone older than me, you can be immature at times."
Akira dramatically gasps, "How dare you Hi-kun! I'm only 356 days older than you, we're practically the same age and you're calling me immature? Have you looked at yourself lately, you little shit?" She finishes her rant off in English while Asahi clearly struggles to hold in his laughter with the way his dimples are showing.
Somebody laughs from the door and Akira can see a black-haired head peeping from the studio door.
"Speak of the devil and the even more annoying little shit appears," Akira comments in English while glowering at Jihoon through the screen.
He comes in and shrugs as if to say he doesn't care and grins at Akira. “I need to get my members now or else they will be late for practice.” Asahi turns and tells her he'll call her back when he can. Akira absentmindedly throws out a mata na and ends the call but not before hearing Jihoon call out to her “Don’t miss me too much Ki-chan!” Akira mutters buang under her breath and rips off the page that she was doodling on.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A month and a half later, Akira finds herself following a staff member who was leading her through the hallways of the Mall of Asia arena. She sees one of the managers standing outside who spots her, waves and he immediately goes into the green room to get Asahi as they agreed she wanted to see him alone first.
She sees Asahi step out first before he does and she runs up with her arms open and collides into him. They bump each other's heads but it doesn't matter when Akira starts tearing up as she clung to him and Asahi starts patting her head like he used to when they were little. He tells her hisa shiburi and she nods her head in reply as she buries her face on his shoulder.
Jihoon, Junkyu and Yoshi observe them from the doorway as the Hamadas whisper and nod at each other and Yoshi comments in Korean, “They really are like twins. She's almost the same height as him, I didn't realize that.” Junkyu nods in agreement while Jihoon replies to Yoshi, “Didn't think she'd be this much of a crybaby though with how tough she acts online.” Junkyu responds that he doesn't think it's an act and that she's just soft for their Hi-kun. They all hum in agreement at that when suddenly an excited ball of energy rushes past them and joins the duo in their hug.
“Ki-chan!!! We finally meet in person and you're so pretty! I know our Hi-kun is handsome and it's creepy how you both look so much alike but you're on another level darling, it must be your Philippine genes! Did you have a safe flight coming here? Were there problems getting into the venue?” Hyunsuk rattles off in a mix of Korean and English.
The 00-liners could hear Akira burst out laughing as she responded to Hyunsuk with a squealed Darling! and a tight hug. She then spots the three observing and her eyes narrow and places her hands on her hips as she sees Jihoon but then she throws him a wink. Yoshi laughs and says, “There's our spitfire.” Jihoon grins and waves at her while Junkyu hides a smile behind his hand.

English translation
From the gaps between the towering buildings I wonder what I can discover The clouds in the night sky sigh And then disappeared in the hustle bustle
I didn't know where this long endless highway would end Carrying the pain to continue running The city shines today too
I'm sure you didn't notice The crossing stretching across left and right I wasn't going to wake up anymore That's why I was drinking a cup of coffee
Awakening World The endless road Tell me Your Word It's a dream's trace opened up by someone Yes, it is a dream's trace Awakening World I step forward While keeping your words echoeing in my head one more time I can still keep going
Crossing the road in the crowd I search for solitude by myself The path of walking and looking back The faces and voices of people walking by There's no way I'd remember them I don't even know where I'm walking
(Such a guy) He's unexpectedly everywhere (Even someone like me) Probably isn't unusual (Even in such a case) I'm unconsciously refusing to give up
Awakening World, the traces that ran away Tell me Your World It's proof that I kept running Yes, it is my proof Awakening World, Where is this city? It seems to remind me of your words again It was too bright
Even if I fall in the middle of a long spiral staircase Will I be at the observatory that I was aiming for?
I don't plan on ever waking up again yeah... Please notice
Awakening World...
Awakening World The endless road Tell me Your Word It's a dream's trace opened up by someone Yes, it is a dream's trace Awakening World I step forward While keeping your words echoeing in my head one more time Just a little further, I can still keep going I can still keep going

UNUSUAL MUN QUESTIONAIRE | REPOST, DON’T REBLOG
your current mood: worried, annoyed at my lack of productivity
the aesthetic of the place you’re in right now: my bedroom, anime posters all over the walls, mini christmas tree right on my table, papers and books scattered across my working table, bed full of plushies & soft scent of coffee
favourite lyrics of the last song you listened to: “ The world rests upon your tiny shoulders, I’m the only one who sees that, and I’m on the verge of tears, You notice that, and ask me “are you alright?”, And I reply in haste, “I’m alright,” but… “ We’ll Be Alright by RADWIMPS
your favourite poem/book: I don’t have an ultimate favorite book but I do enjoy reading several Nora Roberts books and also HP books
guilty pleasure: Rping pure angst, giving angst to my muses
a quote from the last thing you watched: Kohaku: “ It’s just that no one alive has ever seen what it is. And that’s because...all eye-witnesses have been eaten. “ Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon | Episode 11 – Curse of the Man-Eating Pond
favourite time of the year: Autumn

Southern All Stars Lyrics: Watashi wa Piano (私はピアノ; I Am a Piano)
English translation and romanization below the cut. Thank you @theysbian for the coffee! :)
ENGLISH
I was always proud you and I were so close, it made people jealous I was convinced I could go anywhere with you in my life It’s all falling to pieces now, like a storm out of the blue Why aren’t I tearing up? I just wish you’d tell me
Can’t take my eyes off of you We’d listen to Larry Carlton together As I whiled away the hours in your arms in a sunny spot With no time at all to be drunk on memories The moment I managed to tell you I loved you from the very bottom of my heart is such a fond memoryーit all is
Without you around I’ve been living a lonely life Not a single word spoken from 1 to 10 Playing something Lonely over and over again
The gestures you put all your heart and soul into were so very sweet We were able to understand each other through actions instead of words But any man could tell when they put their arms around my thin shoulders: I’m the kind of woman who’s scared of the night But I’m fine with that, all of it
[Southern All Stars version only: Won’t see me hatin’ what we’ve got goin’ Man! Whatcha gonna do now? You even know?]
It’s hard, but I won’t let you see me cry, Billy Joel on rainy nights Sambas for those times when I’m downright pitiful We’ve got the kind of romance that made me sigh. Your tan, bare skin As you quietly held me close is still a fond memory to this very day
It all feels so ridiculous when I burst into tears for a while I asked my piano I asked my piano But all I did was play something Lonely, play something Lonely, over and over again

do you think weird it's for someone to have never tried soda? I’d be surprised that they were never curious enough to try it if they can access soda, but then again I live in a third world country and not everyone gets to try everything. I’ve learned to judge less when it comes to opportunities like this. is there any foreign film you recommend? Portrait of a Lady on Fire was fucking intense and so, so so good. do you have the same religious beliefs as your parents? My dad might also be atheist, but I’ve never known for sure. He once confided in me that he was atheist in college but “it changed” when he met my mom... but honestly we’ve always grunted the same way whenever my mom tells us it’s time to pray or if we have to watch our weekly mass livestream. So idk. I think he just acts Catholic to appease her, but yeah he’s definitely weird about it. which floor of your house/building are you on now? Second floor. It’s my first time to want to hang out in my bedroom in months because IT’S ACTUALLY RAINING and it’s cold enough in my room to wanna stay here. are there any maps hanging in your room? No maps here.
are you often a third wheel? or is someone a third wheel to you? Yep I third wheel pretty often. My girlfriend and I study in different schools and I have friends in my school who are couples, so if Gab isn’t visiting my campus for the day I just tag along with my couple friends. I don’t get bothered or feel insecure by it because I have my own relationship lolol what's the last dvd you bought? Holy shit...DVD? I don’t even remember anymore. It was most likely an Audrey Hepburn film, back in 2013 when I was really into her. That or Beyoncé’s Life Is But A Dream documentary, which was the last thing she ever released on DVD. Also came out in 2013. tell me about your favorite pair of jeans. High-waisted 90s-styled jeans. Nothing much to say other than they fit me well, I got a lot of compliments whenever I have them on, and they match any t-shirt I paired with, which made me like wearing t-shirts again haha. would you ride a motorcycle if given the chance? (or have you?) I would but only if someone super experienced was driving. I haven’t been on one because my parents don’t allow me to, and tbh I don’t mind the rule because I’m mostly scared of motorcycles anyway. is your hair healthy? No. Some hair salon I went to around ten years ago put some cheap products in my hair when I had it rebonded and it never felt 100% healthy again. Until today it gets very stiff when it gets into contact with water and only shampoo, and I always have to pair it with conditioner. if a hotel offered free breakfast in bed, what would you order? Eggs Benedict and some very creamy warm coffee. how often do you take a train? Never. I don’t trust the public transport here and I’m better off driving in my own car. what are your thoughts on reincarnation? (have you ever read up about it?) I don’t think of it at all because I don’t believe in it. I don’t mind others who are into it, just don’t shove it down my throat. what's your favorite led zeppelin song? I don’t have one. does your home have a balcony/deck/porch? Yeah we have a balcony. We used to have a full balcony, but we transformed 3/4 of it into my brother’s current room a few years ago because he was starting to grow up and he needed his own room. We retained 1/4 of the space so that it can be the place where my dog can still do his business. what does your closet/wardrobe say about you? It says I am a very messy person who can’t keep her closet consistently organized lol. It will also tell you I’m quite girly based on the clothes I own. do you enjoy theatre? I was never a fan. how would you feel about traveling abroad alone? If I was offered the chance to do it I certainly wouldn’t give it up, but I really, really, preferably would travel with at least one companion. Traveling is one of those experiences I’d want to share with someone, and I would hate if I had to go back to my hotel room at the end of the day with no one to talk to. who would you call a lyrical genius? Laura Jane Grace. how do you treat yourself? My go-to gift for myself is giving into my cravings hahaha. Nothing speaks more to me than food, and if I feel like I deserve a reward for a job well done, I’ll go to a slightly more expensive restaurant to celebrate. do you have an interesting passport? Idk, it’s a normal one and I never had it customized or anything. are you going to pursue a career according to what you enjoy? I hope I get to. I really enjoyed my PR internship and I’d love to be headed there. what happens to your old clothes? They go to the very back or the very bottom of my wardrobe for the most part. My mom will make us throw out clothes we don’t like anymore once a year, so that’s the time I get to get rid of them. what's your favorite frozen treat? Cornetto ice cream is one of my faaaaavorite comfort snacks. The end of the cone where they save chocolate chunks is the best part. who supports you financially? My parents. Getting increasingly guiltier about it by the day, too. if you wanted to go to the movie cinema, how would you get there? I would wait for the clock to strike midnight tonight, because in 48 minutes they’ll finally loosen lockdown rules AND I CAN FINALLY GO OUT. Hahaha. After that I’ll jump to my car, drive out of the village, take a u-turn, and I’m there. how many pillows are on your bed? Two big ones. would you pay more for organic food? Only if I had the money for it. Organic food is a thing of the (very) privileged here and is not very accessible to begin with, unless you’re in posher grocieries. have you ever had a crush on a sibling's friend or a friend's sibling? I haven’t. I’d find it weird considering they’re all a bit younger than me. do you have a friend who mooches? what to do about it? (or is it you?) She’s never done it with me but I’ve heard enough horror stories about her to know that she tends to do this, but yeah Mils is apparently quite the moocher. I’m soooo not one; I’d wait for my friends to offer to pay for stuff, but otherwise I’m fighting them over the bill lmao. do you know much about feng shui? (do you use it?) I’m not knowledgeable on it but I’m definitely familiar with it, because we have a rather large Filipino-Chinese community/culture in the country that glorifies feng shui during Chinese New Year season. I don’t really have a choice but have Chinese culture shoved down my throat whether it’s in the news, the media, or my Chinese friends. how would you make friends in a quiet class? I preferably wouldn’t because I’m only interested in getting good grades and getting that class over with hahaha. But if I was interested in making a friend or two, I’d typically scan the classroom and see who seems to be responsible? Like if they take notes as hard as I do. are you generally a quick learner? No. I take some time, and I especially take long if the thing being taught is more hands-on, like origami. I’ve just never been good at following certain tasks, and I prefer learning from reading instructions. what's your favorite spot to read? Skywalk or the dining table. has anyone given you a nickname you didn't like? (what was it?) Not that I can recall. I’m okay with all of them. did you know that buddha is not considered a god to buddhists? Yes. do you save tickets from movies, etc.? If it’s a significant enough date or event, sure. I’ve kept my 2018 Paramore gig ticket to this day, but like I’ve thrown out my ticket for Knives Out because I hated the movie lol. without looking him up, who was jim morrison? Vocalist for The Doors. when's the last time your bedroom was painted/wallpapered? Idk, 2006 or 2007 when the house was being made? It’s never been repainted. teach me something in another language. (not french/chinese/german/arabic) Why so language-ist lmaooooooo uh “Nakauwi ka na?” means “Did you get home? / Have you gotten home?” what type of body wash did you last use? Idk, I never read the labels on it actually. what type of music do you like and why? Right now I’m into lo-fi because it makes me feel relaxed, but I’m also starting to get into the recent trend where today’s artists put out songs that sound like they’re from the 80s, like Dua Lipa’s Physical or The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights - I think the genre is called synth pop/synthwave. They simply sound cool haha and they’re awesome to listen to while driving. if you randomly want to eat something in the house, do you eat it or wait? I check the time, like if we’re supposed to be having dinner soon, then act accordingly. who knows the most about you (besides yourself)? My girlfriend. do you have a nervous habit? (e.g. biting nails, tapping feet, smoking) Plucking eyebrow or eyelash hair, but that behavior is reserved for extreme cases where I’m incredibly and inconsolably anxious. On a milder day I would vape, sigh a lot, or bite my nails. how's your favorite pro sports team doing lately? I don’t watch sports with teams. would you be/are you a good role model to a younger sibling? I don’t get into trouble but I’m not the best influence either.

Dust Volume 6, Number 2

Grisha Shakhnes
Time for another collection of short, sharp reviews, covering a gamut of styles. Our most tireless contributor, Bill Meyer, turned in a record eight Dusts this time, so if you like jazz, improv and experimental music, this is your edition. Other writers included Ray Garraty, Jennifer Kelly, Justin Cober-Lake, Tim Clarke and Ian Mathers.
Max B — House Money (Self-released)
youtube
Max B is doing 75 years in prison, yet before his bid he recorded a lot of music to be used by trusted collaborators. Last year’s Coke Wave 5 with French Montana felt authentic enough to be confused with Max’s pre-prison mixtapes, only a bit more polished. This new EP is no less wave-y and goofy, but too many guest verses dilute the fun. If French, with whom Max B recorded a lot of mixtapes together, seems like a natural collaborator, the rest of the guests are an uneasy fit. House Money is a Frankenstein-y affair exactly because Max himself wouldn’t invite them to his booth (not that they are lousy talents, they are just on a different frequency with Max B). It is probably mixed and produced by someone who thought that these collaborators would attract additional audience, yet the result is the opposite: Max B’s fans would feel alienated by impostors in his own domain.
Ray Garraty
Jeb Bishop / Jaap Blonk / Weasel Walter / Damon Smith — JaJeWeDa (Balance Point Acoustics)
Pioneer Works Vol. 1 BPA 19 by JeJaWeDa (Jeb Bishop / Jaap Blonk / Weasel Walter / Damon Smith)
No matter how big the stage they occupy, it isn’t big enough for Jaap Blonk and Weasel Walter. Both men are masters of strategic exaggeration. Put them together and a clash is inevitable. Blonk not only spews sound poetry like a symphony of pan-lingual news broadcasts and surreptitiously recorded mouthwash experiments, he manipulates electronics with a video game controller that looks especially ridiculous in his gangly hands. Walter mugs and wallops, each movement lunging simultaneously at your ears and your funny bone. Perhaps you’re wondering, “isn’t this a record review? How will these visual descriptions clue me into the sound?” Play this record and you will know. And you will also marvel at the way bassist Damon Smith and trombonist Jeb Bishop balance the other half of the band’s nuttiness with seriousness so unfailing, you might put your money on them against Roscoe Mitchell in a game of poker.

Ben Carey — Antimatter (Hospital Hill)
ANTIMATTER by Ben Carey
Sydney-based electronic musician Ben Carey played saxophone before he took on modular synthesizers. This may explain the quivering, palpable presence of the sounds he devises; he makes static pulse and shake like swollen lips engaged in the act of vocalizing. His deployments of attenuated tones, sudden swells, and insistent chimes are discontinuous and episodic, but also quite thoughtfully planned out. Both the sudden shifts and the long considerations of discrete elements feel as essential as the unforgettable bridge in a bubblegum cart hit, and the qualities of the sounds Carey ponders amply reward the attention required to follow their shifts in and out of audibility and back and forth across the stereo spectrum. If you’re inclined to get well acquainted with Antimatter, consider springing for the LP. Since both Carey and his label are situated in Australia, it might take some looking and spending, but Rashad Becker’s cut and the 45-rpm playing speed guarantee maximum presence.
Bill Meyer
John Chantler — Tomorrow Is Too Late (Room40)
Tomorrow Is Too Late by John Chantler
From the pig’s ass on the sleeve to the titles of the album’s two tracks, John Chantler’s Tomorrow is Too Late promises to deal with endings. But when you put the record on, you find yourself adrift in events that defy linear description, let alone the definition of a final point. Oh, sure, both of them end, but they don’t spend the time leading up to those terminations making sure that you know where they’re going. The title track was commissioned for the 2018 iteration of the French electronic music institution INA GRM’s Présences Électronique festival, and most of its sounds were obtained from a François Coupigny synthesizer that is over 50 years old. Rare earl synths are like worlds unto themselves, and the listener is adrift with Chantler as he invites sounds to converge, dispel, and recongregate in winking, restless masses. On “We’re Always at the End,” the electronic sound convergence make way for a pipe organ, which coheres into a solid sonic presence, but when it disappears, the piece does not. This is music to inhabit, over and over again.
Bill Meyer
Richard Dawson — 2020 (Weird World)
2020 by Richard Dawson
This sixth full-length from cult songwriter Richard Dawson unspools like a series of linked short stories, the characters sharing a blighted, latter-day English backdrop and perhaps avoiding one another’s eyes as they pass on the streets. Sung in Dawson’s wavery tenor — with flights up into a very uncertain falsetto — and backed with the most straightforward of rock-ish instrumental arrangements, the songs flourish in their specificity. The metal-riffing “Jogging,” for instance, tells the story of a mid-life crisis with startling exact-ness, an ex-school counselor, laid off and too anxious to leave the house, advised by a doctor to take up jogging. The story is told first person, in the most straightforward way possible, with minimal embellishments. If it weren’t for the crashing guitar chords, the squiggly lines of synth, you might be listening to a friend over coffee. The scenarios are mostly dreary, of people stuck in soul-sucking jobs, in towns where things go wrong through neglect and inertia. Yet, once in a while the sun comes piercing through, and life, however stunted and bare and grey, turns ever so slightly hopeful. I’ll leave you with verse from lacerating “The Queen’s Head.”
“The guy from the vape shop Ferrying his chocolate labs Waves to us cheerily From a leaky kayak ‘I've lost everything apart from what counts’ Pointing to his dogs and then at his heart.”
Now that’s a pre-chorus.
Jennifer Kelly
Frank Denyer — The Boundaries of Intimacy (Another Timbre)
youtube
On The Boundaries of Intimacy, composer Frank Denyer explores volume dropped to a soft level. The approach produces a sort of intimacy, nearly everything sounds hushed, although it remains unclear whether, as listeners, we're leaning into a confidant or cupping our hand to a wall to eavesdrop. Regardless of our position as listeners, Denyer continues his work with unpredictable instrumentation, highlighting sneh and koto playing in various places (including two version of a koto piece), and combining flute and electronics for a strange tonal study called “Beyond the Boundaries of Intimacy.” When he works with a more traditional set of instruments, as on “String Quartet,” the ostensibly comfortable sounds become unfamiliar, an experienced aided by Denyer's play with dynamics, turning from a crescendo to a near disappearance. Denyer presents those sorts of challenges across these pieces (written over the past 40 years). He requires attentive, patient listening, but rewards it with unsettling experiences.
Justin Cober-Lake
Avram Fefer Quartet—Testament (Clean Feed)
youtube
This record is credited to the Avram Fefer Quartet, and it’s true that the Brooklyn-based alto and tenor saxophone wrote the tunes and leads the band. But he’s not necessarily the guy you will listen to every time that you play it. Not that there’s anything wrong with Fefer’s playing, which combines Sonny Rollins’ muscularity with an affinity for bold melodies rooted equally in soul jazz and West African pop music. He’s got ideas, emotion and chops to spare. But damn, what a band! Fefer and bassist Eric Revis have an association going back to the 1990s; no matter which way the music rolls, the foundation is solid. Drummer Chad Taylor is a regular member of a trio with Fefer and Revis which made a couple records a decade or so back, and he’s also a member of bands led by Revis and guitarist Marc Ribot. Taylor never misses a chance to turn the music up a little closer to a boil, and the blues-rooted tone that Ribot favors here adds steely sentiment to the blues, mass to the Afrobeat repetitions, and confident complexity to the free interludes in this music. So, if your attention wavers from the saxophone for a second, it’s probably because you’re listening to how one of his accompanists is playing off of another one. Wotta band!
Bill Meyer
Roc Marciano — Marcielago (Self-released)
youtube
In “Saw” Roc Marciano says, “Sometimes I pinch myself in disbelief,” referring to a level of fame he’s achieved after 20 years in the rap game. The listeners are pinching themselves as well, but for a different reason: Marciano doesn’t repeat himself. Roc Marci works with his lyrics on two levels: line by line as well as bar by bar. As defined by Marci, his songs are “poetry over beats.”Marcielago is a quieter effort, closer to Rosebudd’s Revenge 1 and 2, than to 2018’s KAOS and Behold a Dark Horse. To rephrase the poet himself, on Marcielago he’s more like a pimp than a mack. The standout here is “Ephesians” which starts with early electronica and then explodes into a full-scale attack. Marci’s long time collaborator Ka spits here a verse which does an impossible thing: Marciano is murdered on his own turf.
Ray Garraty
Machtelinckx / Badenhorst / Cools / Gouband — Porous Structures (Aspen Edities)
porous structures by Machtelinckx/Badenhorst/Cools/Gouband
This quartet comprises two steel-stringed acoustic guitarists, one percussionist prone to placing stones on his drums, and one clarinet and a saxophone player who likes to sing. The album’s title implies permeability, and the music delivers by creating the impression of actions happen in different places at the same time. Ruben Machtelinckx and Bert Cools’ guitars create structures made of slow-moving, finger-picked patterns. Toma Gouband and Joachim Badenhorst often sound like they are playing in some resonant space outside of the guitars’ sanctuary, where their sounds can spread a halo of echo around and occasionally blow through the dry, close-miked string sounds. The former’s rattling rocks create more texture than motion; the latter’s distant croons and spare tones create a sense of distance. In their own quiet way, these musicians have arrived at a sound that can’t be mistaken for anyone else’s.
Bill Meyer
Salim Nourallah — Jesus of Sad (Palo Santo)
youtube
The narrators of Salim Nourallah's songs don't often find things going so well. Nourallah's taken that point to its logical conclusion on new EP Jesus of Sad. Rather than indulging depressive tendencies, though, the songwriter brings his sense of humor for a parodic take. “So, you think you've suffered?” he sings to open the disc. “I sip the tears of the world from my coffee cup.” The hyperbole might immediately develops his exaggerated character. Accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Billy Harvey, Nourallah moves on to “Born with a Broken Heart,” a funky number owing something to Soul Coughing while providing one of the best bass lines in his catalog. The cut's full of wit while addressing serious questions about faith, gender equality, and more.
“This Doesn't Feel like Peace, Love, or Understanding” (the second track here to echo a Nick Lowe title) sounds like quintessential Nourallah, with a pop-rock sound that would have fit on any of his last few records and a relatable sentiment conveyed in smart lyrics. Two versions of “Misanthrope” close out the disc. Nourallah co-wrote the song with Rhett Miller, but here he turns away from the Old 97's' bouncy version (called“She Hates Everyone”). Nourallah slows it down, building complex feelings; he can't fully enjoy his strange love now under his anxiety about the future. It closes the EP well, being yet more honest emotion that manages to misdirect and complicate things, the true heart covered by the knowing satire of “Jesus of Sad.”

Parashi—Tape From Oort Cloud (Sedimental/Skell)

When a record provokes images of a Captain Beefheart lyric turned inside out, you know its makers are on to something. The squelchy sounds that usher in “The Vanishing Coast,” which is the first of this LP’s four tracks, does not bring to mind synthesizers, even though that’s what Mike Griffin (that’s Mr. Parashi to you) probably used some time them. Nor does it bring to mind someone else’s record. Rather, I hear the words “slow and bulbous” as the music sinks slowly into its own swampy stealth. “Broadcast Failures” leaves even those alinear coordinates behind as it pings its way woozily into the depths. The titular malfunctions might be echoed calls which fail to distract the sonar-like main body of sound, or the squashed, distant carousel that follows. Or maybe it doesn’t. File this under best practice befuddlement, but be sure to tape a bookmark to the plastic outer sleeve to remind yourself of the necessity of playing it.

Tom Redwood — The Glue (self released)
The Glue by Tom Redwood
With The Glue, his fourth album, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Tom Redwood has tapped into a rewarding strain of country/folk that pulls hard on traditional roots, while adding a knowing wink, flowing performances, and plenty of tuneful song craft. As in Jim O’Rourke’s beloved series of Drag City albums, the music-making is taken seriously but is undercut by self-deprecating humor. On “Easy Love” Redwood sings, “When I was young I was easy loving / But now that I’m old, I’m not so dumb,” and on the title track he makes a playful reference to “round, gorgeous thighs.” He’s not afraid to play it straight, though, such as on the haunting “Cold Mother Night,” and reflective closer “Shut the Door.” There’s superb lap steel playing by Kier Stevens, smart counterpoint on guitar and “cheesy keys” from producer Matt Walker, and ethereal backing vocals from Rosie Luby, which contrasts nicely with Redwood’s aw-shucks delivery.

Grisha Shakhnes — Being There (Unfathomless)
being there by grisha shakhnes
Being There presents the listener with a document of actor, action and the arena in which the former enacts the latter. Essentially, Grisha Shakhnes recorded himself recording and recorded the room in which he was recording. Sometimes a recording device filters the subjects of his inquiry on the way to the recorder; while the sounds were captured by a Zoom digital recorded, some of them went through a Rvox reel-to-reel tape deck along the way. Equipped with the knowledge that you’re hearing Shakhnes making recordings, you quickly find yourself making decisions about what sounds to follow, and then dealing with the consequences of the choices you made as your act of following draws you into the chain of events that made the album in the first place. You are present with Shakhnes, sharing in the creation of Being There.

Six by Seven — Dream On (Cargo)
D R E A M . O N by six by seven
One of the great shoulda beens of 1990s British rock (on the other side of the Atlantic, it’s doubtful anyone not reading something like the NME at the time would have heard much of them), Six by Seven are also one of the few from that era to keep going in a way that’s not just repeating old glories. Now almost entirely just frontman Chris Olley (his son Charlie drums here, but otherwise it’s a solo show) you wouldn’t guess it from the massive, warmly analogue psychedelic/motorik drones and drifts here. Stylistically speaking, Olley can be a restless guy, never really revisiting the glory of Six by Seven’s first three albums (what you might call their classic period, and well worth checking out) but also covering an astonishing breadth during the years since. The recent Dream On is as good a place to dip into his stream of work as any, boasting three massive soundscapes (the best of which might be “And No One Knows Your Name” as well as briefer, dreamier song like “Hey Kid” and the title track. Both his muse and the demands of making music your day job keep Olley forever moving, though — even writing up this release was marked by the appearance of a double album-length Dream On 2, so anyone on Olley’s wavelength can expect a lot to keep up with.

Majima: An earnest song Ring, please take a listen
Yuki (Majima & Kiryu): "Congratulations" (Happy) and "thank you" (Thank you) shouldn't be a lie (Feelings from the heart / Uh-hah) So why does it hurt so much? (Why is that not me beside you? / Yeah yeah)
"Goodbye", (Goodbye) "I'm sorry" (Sorry) or these feelings I drag along with me (I’m losing my mind / Uh-hah) Shining so brightly that it doesn't reflect them the ring on your ring finger (The ring sparkles as if mocking me / Yeah yeah)
Yuki: The chimes of blessing that heralded the beginning of your new life
Yuki (Majima & Kiryu): resounded like the after school chime (Ring ring)
Yuki: As you sealed your vow with a kiss amidst the incessant applause what kind of smile
Yuki (Majima & Kiryu): was I wearing? (Absurdly makin’ smile / Ring ring)
Yuki: I wish I could think that just seeing you happy would be enough
Yuki (Majima & Kiryu): to make me happy, too (Me and my all are salty / Ring ring ring...)
"Congratulations" (Happy) and "thank you" (Thank you) shouldn't be a lie (Wishes from the heart) So why does it hurt so much? (Why is that not me beside you? / Yeah yeah)

Yuki (Kiryu): until they wear out (Me and my all are salty)
Yuki (Majima & Kiryu): I loved you, (Happy) that I still do (Thank you) I should want to tell you that (Wishes from the heart) but I'm just standing here unable to say a word (Why is that not me beside you? / Yeah yeah)

LIP×LIP Docchi Kiss LIVE Report English Translation
LIP×LIP LIVE “First Kiss” ~ Docchi no Kiss Ka, Erabe yo ~ ~ Which Kiss Do You Want ~
raw here
T/N: This WIP has been sitting untouched in my folder the moment it was tweeted ww, so like about 2 years now wwww. Since I decided to do the birthday countdown, I might as well include this and finish this at last. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AIZOU AND YUUJIROU!!!!! 愛してるよ ~
-----
During the waiting time, after entering the venue, the performance version of the songs compiled in the album were playing. The introduction video of the album was also inserted midway.
Lines like “Thank you for spending the same time with us.”
Reflecting on the golden chandelier is a shining light in the shade of blue. This world view of the palace certainly represents LIPxLIP. I feel like I naturally transformed into being a Julietta even before I entered (the venue).
Inside, small petals are fluttering about splendidly. Yuujirou ---> Aizou, introduction in this order.
A thin film (curtain) rose. The band members entered. Oji-san wore a black hat and in his ‘black pace’, dressed in a classic outfit.
LIP×LIP entered, in their Romeo costume.
From the left (of the stage): Nakanishi-san, Kobayashi-san, Reonnu, Aizou, Yuujirou, Keiki-san, Oji-san. Overhead is a horizontal screen.
The songs started right away.
*Nonfantasy
In the screen are images of gorgeous flowers. Right before ‘suki da yo’, (image of) small petals were falling. At Yuujirou’s ‘kimi senyou da yo’, he made a space reserved only for you with his arms. With the dark lighting, the whole venue quieted down; and after a while, the two, preparing for something, said in a clear voice, “suki da yo.”
*Yappa Saikyou
A lively video, with vivid colors used fully to the heart’s content; at the part of the interlude, letters appeared. After “Ride on” is a choreography of profound rhythm. “Daisuki tte yappa saikyou” is brilliantly done with the guts pose.
Aizou and Yuujirou introduced themselves. With the band members’ hands (introduction), the two were sparkling.
*Rodeo
The neon-colored lights are the main image of the townscape.
Smoke came from both sides.
The choreography is dynamic and lively; there are many movements from left to right and they made use of the wide stage.
“Is it OK to meet in the usual place?”
“Yes~ from the very start~”
They seem like they were facing each other.
*Choco Kano
An image of pink-colored pastries. It changes completely from Rodeo; they begin to sway from left to right. A great number of cute dance steps that matched the lyrics. “Tsukue no naka” with a ‘taking a peek’ choreography. “Dare nandesuka?”, pointed to the direction of the audience.
*White Day Kiss
Images (on the screen) of white ribbon, kiss mark, heart chocolate in light blue. Mic stand appear from below. At the chorus, did the double peace sign, swinging both hands. The swaying is impressive. At “Hyakumankai no kisu” Aizou points at his cheeks. In both no. 1 and 2, before the chorus, Yuujirou’s facial expression can’t be seen and it brought more feeling of painfulness in the production. At “Honmei dakara” Aizou draws a big heart (in the air). At no.2, Yuujirou poses as if asleep.
~
(MC Talk)
Aizou: It's Valentine's.
Yuujirou: How many chocolates did you receive?
Aizou: I received one from each Julietta present today.
Yuujirou: No, they gave it to me.
Aizou: What's your basis?
Yuujirou: None.
Aizou: Don't you hate those that don't have basis?
Yuujirou: ?
Aizou: I received them.
Yuujirou: And your basis is?
Aizou: None.
Yuujirou: Aizou, it is bad to lie.
Aizou: I have it somewhere!
Let's decide who is more suitable to receive them.
~
*Judge☆
Red balance scales, a video of a courtroom. “Hitotsume, futatsume, mitsume” is denoted by fingers.
At “igiari”, lightly pushing each other away. “Boku ga (boku ga) kimi wo (kimi wo)” the two forcibly put one foot in front of the other. The appearance of raising the back of a hand towards this direction seems comical.
*Koi wo Shiyou
Pink hearts to hearts in varying colors. “Fuku wo narabete”, a choreography of similar to placing a hanger at an elevated place. “Datsumekko” Aizou with arms crossed and taking off clothes action. The chorus is the MV’s choreography. “Akai ito de”, you can see as if the red thread existed and they are synchronized.
~
LIPxLIP leaving. There is a hidden microphone at the dressing room, leaking their conversation.
Aizou: Let’s fall in love ~fufufu~
Yuujirou: What are you pacing for? Are you nervous?
Aizou: Not at all
Yuujirou: During Nonfantasy, your hand holding the mic was trembling.
Aizou: I could say the same for you; you bought a can of coffee even if you don’t drink one.
Yuujirou: I bought that for you. I don’t always say this but thank you.
Aizou: ?!?!
Yuujirou: Be honest, what did you think when you partnered with me?
Aizou: Why with this guy? I thought we definitely wouldn’t match.
Yuujirou: You’re right. We didn’t align when it came to tuna mayo.
Aizou: Yuujirou would most likely be my rival so I thought I absolutely won’t lose to him.
Yuujirou: I thought an amazing guy is here when I look at Aizou
Aizou: Eh?
Yuujirou: Someone who goes to an audition with bed hair is amazing.
Aizou: It's not bed hair; I styled it! But, with him, I thought, I can fulfill the dream I've always dreamed of.
Yuujirou: .....
Aizou: Wait, Yuujirou being kind to me is suspicious. There's definitely a hidden camera somewhere.
Yuujirou: None of that sort.
Aizou: Is this revenge for the Osaka live? Everyone here, are you excited!?! I love you!
Yuujirou: Pardon us for only playing a video without sound.
Aizou: It's alright; though there's no sound, one could shout their love on their own, right?
Yuujirou: Yeah, everyone is thinking, "What are you doing, Aizou-kun? Hurry up changing your clothes!" (he imitated)
Aizou: Eh? Huh? How embarrassing. You're lying, right?
Yuujirou: It's a lie. They can only hear our voice. (meaning, no video)
Aizou: Oi! As I thought this whole thing was weird!
~
LIPxLIP appeared wearing their Yume Fanfare outfit
*Yume Fanfare
Because they are together, their dance shine beautifully; a song that is conveyed because it is Aizou and Yuujirou. If one is missing, it won’t work at all. A song for two people. The last harmony sums it up and is beautiful as expected. The chorus is stable and similar in the MV.
*Tsuki no Hime
“Please listen carefully”
A picture of a moon. At the chorus, the moon is red and rising; it was mysterious. At the beginning and end, both looked up at the moon and danced.
Aizou is cool, widening his legs diagonally.
Yuujirou crossed his legs; silent dance steps at the beginning, and gentlemanly from “soto no sekai watashi kara” part. The chorus has great choreography and livened up (the crowd).
“Thank you for listening carefully.”
Band members’ introduction
*Romeo
Yuujirou, from the start to the end, did not make a mistake at all. He is honestly magnificent. Aizou in his part “Nayanderu no? Ojou-san” is even more gentlemanly than before. It gradually softened later on. Seemingly like the East Country, a huge feeling of exhilaration overflows in the choreography. At “eran de”, the pose is very-like Aizou and Yuujirou. They jumped the whole time and both of them looked like they enjoyed it more than anyone else.
~
LIPxLIP and the band members leave.
Encore.
LIPxLIP and the band members enter.
They changed to the LIVE t-shirt: Aizou ---> black Yuujirou ---> white
~
*Hitsuyou Fukkaketsu
At the end (of the song) is a clip/scene of a thin cloud on a blue sky. They held each other’s mics and sang. *Silver tape (similar to party streamers; on concerts these are a custom) falls from above. They left their Yume Fanfare shoes on: Aizou tucking his trousers inside his shoes and Yuujirou leaving his outside.
*Repaint
An image wherein you can feel the time of space from the pale bubbles in a light blue sky. Came out in different colors. Mic held in their hands, the two bent down at “seishun wa ima mo tsuzuiteru”. You’d be drawn in at the rush of excitement at the last chorus. They waved both hands left and right.
~
Both: Thank you! (waving at different directions)
Yuujirou: I love you-! (suki da yo)
Julietta: Kyaa-!
Aizou: (I want to do it too) Okay, here goes!
Julietta:
Aizou: I love you-! (aishiteru yo)
Julietta: Kyaa-!
They bowed while their hands were connected. Aizou is always waving his hand and so Yuujirou pulled his arm so they could return back. Later on, Yuujirou comes out all of a sudden and waves goodbye. The fans were given permission to take photos of the venue for five minutes.

T/N: Keep in mind that Japanese and English aren’t my first language so I apologize if there are some mistakes. As always, if you’re going to use/reference my translations, please do not claim it as your own and credit me.
