I've just learned that Sir Andrew Davis, among other things Music Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago from 2000 until 2021, died yesterday. A great artist and from what I saw, a really nice person.

Guests at the Last Frontier pool watched as a mushroom cloud rose from the Simon Test, part of the Operation Upshot-Knothole, at the Nevada Test Site outside of Las Vegas on April 25, 1953. The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce issued a calendar for tourists, listing the scheduled times of the bomb detonations and the best places to view them.
When I saw this photo shared on Facebook by the National Atomic Testing Museum (Atomic Museum), I was thinking what a contrast from just eight years earlier when Enrico Fermi was taking bets ahead of the Trinity test about whether a nuclear detonation would ignite the atmosphere and possibly destroy the world. That’s an episode recounted in John Adams’s opera Doctor Atomic which I saw at Lyric Opera in the 2007/8 season.
I knew Fermi wasn’tserious, but hadn’t understood that by that time that particular catastrophe had already been ruled out by scientists as even a remote possibility, but the idea that it at least might have been possible lived on in the more popular imagination for some time.

I WENT TO THIS!!! The movement and orchestration was INCREDIBLE (yes I cried). The image of Frankenstein as a mutilated but naked man was profoundly beautiful. It felt like i was watching an old painting of Jesus come to life. I HIGHLY encourage you to watch this performance!! If you live in Chicago — go see more Lyric opera performances. Them and the people at Joffrey really know whats up.
finding out there's a frankenstein ballet and that it was in october of last year…DEVASTATING
look at this. look at these. im foaming at the mouth
#i went to see sufjan’s Illinoise! musical recently too#just so goddamn good#that one wasnt at lyric but it was also a dance piece#chicago is where its at folks!!!#my friends and I dressed up to go see frankenstein and it was so much fun. a little girl asked if we were princesses :’)#frankenstein#play#chicago#lyric opera#lyric opera of chicago#ballet#the guy who played frankenstein was SO. Here's some more information about it:
I don't think they ever found the culprit, because I also came across a Facebook post from 2019 implying that the case was still cold.
i love going through all the older opera materials i inherited from my grandmother bc i end up learning abt the time a lyric opera chorister was murdered in the most ominous way this information could be divulged possible

you know i do miss living in illinois because on literally every corner you could find a polish deli/polish store. like what. my grandma has a straight up list of places she goes .
so anyway that’s why i hate it here (<- does not have access to a steady supply of polish ketchup) (it’s not all too bad here i just. grr)
#misc#there’s one (1) singular polish store and it is a thirty minute drive and they don’t even have the right brand of polish ketchup#the other one is Different i Promise#it has to be pudliszki. it has to be. łagodny or pikantny does not matter as long as it is that brand specifically#also just like. other stuff . coughs lyric opera is in chicago#and it’s like right after you get off the metra too . just cross the bridge#uhmmm there’s this kickass froyo place across from my grandma’s house [will not be naming]#it’s so banger#it is soooo banger#i was able to walk to school in middle school too which was fun. walking to/from school in a blizzard? less fun but it was an experience.#oops i kind of wrote a lot in the tags. ash gets sentimental.#so this is why i consider chicago my home#TTHE MOZART IMMERSIVE OVER THE SUMMER WAS FUCKIGN LVOELY WE WALKED 7 MILES THAT DAY.

I am beginning to feel like there's a tendency in staged productions of La Damnation de Faust to overestimate the abstraction of the score/libretto and just put a whole lot of visual business into it that's not really necessary to tell the story or convey the emotions involved. On the other hand, this mental image is deeply hilarious.
#this is about the 2010 chicago lyric opera production#dir. stephen langridge#it seems to have been set in 1980s east germany#as such it is the second least weird staging of la damnation i have heard of#(the 2008 met production is the least weird)#and like i get why people want to stage it!#there's a lot you can get out of just letting the actors interact physically#but some versions i have read about just seem to depart completely from the words being sung#la damnation de faust#hot faust summer
