SVU 19x3 Contrapasso Thoughts/Review

Overall, another solid episode with great performances from everyone in it. Though I’m giving a special shout out to Mariska, Peter Scanavino and Raul Esparza, they all conveyed the emotions in their scripts and for their scenes. Mariska really showed Olivia struggling with finding out about the news that Ellie Porter’s mother is alive and wants to be in Noah’s life. Peter really showed Carisi the down-to-earth/empathetic Carisi all of us know and love from seasons 16 & 17. Raul Esparza absolutely KILLED IT during Barba’s closing arguments, that was probably the best monologue he has gotten for Barba in a seriously long time. And here are some other thoughts about plot points/ stray observations about characters this week:

Olivia’s Arc With Noah and Brooke Shields: I was incredibly happy to know Liv was cleared by the DA for the bruises Noah had gotten by pure accident, as we all know, Liv was pulling him away from oncoming traffic. I am still skeptical as to where this whole, Brooke Shields as Ellie’s mother plotline will go in future episodes. In my opinion, Ellie didn’t lie to Liv about her mom being dead, my guess is that she had no idea. As we all know, she was pimped out while she was in her teens, most likely she ran away and lost contact/got cut off from her mother before getting involved with being a prostitute and drug addict. But bottom line is: If the writers make it to where Noah is PERMANENTLY taken from Liv, I WILL QUIT WATCHING SVU. 

Langen is BACK!: I was happy to have Peter Hermann back as Trevor Langen this week, even though I wish it was under better circumstances in the plot. I love whenever Petska shares scenes because they are goals af in real life and Peter is HOT AF!

The Carisi I Know And Love is Back!: The opening dialogue between Fin and Carisi walking to the call was just PERFECT! It reminded me of why I loved Carisi, he always tells of his family, he loves his family and that was so cute that Carisi was a kid, he went to the store with his mom and he stole a pack of Rolos and his mom made him go confess to what he did to employees in the store and in confessional in church, but she never told his dad. Also, I smiled when Carisi asked Lyla, the hostess of the restaurant to look at pictures of people and saying, “please”? And Carisi brought up his niece again! I loved how he said he would protect her if any older guys like teachers would ever do what Jason Carr did to Evelyn Bundy this week. 

Barba & Benson: It was so nice to hear Liv call Barba by his first name, I definitely think it shows a change in their dynamic. Even if they don’t become romantically involved, it definitely shows their friendship has really grown to a level of trust where it doesn’t have to be strictly professional between the two of them. Liv really cares for Barba, as does Barba with Liv; and it really shows when she does what she does best, helping others see the light and that these kinds of behaviors of men taking advantage of young women and even girls is never acceptable, especially now given all of the women speaking out about their experiences of sexual harassment/assault with Harvey Weinstein.

The King of the Courtroom: This episode was amazing with Barba’s closing argument. Barba once again shining light on not just the physical acts both sides did with Jason’s downstairs area being chopped off and Evelyn being harassed assaulted by Jason, but the morality of victims seeking justice by getting back at the person/people who did them wrong. Liv’s statement about how we could all become victims was so important and true. 

Fin & Carisi as Partners: Honestly, I love when Fin and Carisi get partnered together, and it was nice to see Fin adding to Carisi’s story that he was all about Jujubes as a kid. Also, having them get the call about a guy being castrated really made me feel for them as I couldn’t imagine losing parts down there if I was a guy. This kind of reminded me of an episode from Chicago P.D. last season where a guy was also castrated and Kenny Rixton kept asking Kevin Atwater if he wanted to see the crime scene pictures of the dead guy and the coroner asking how far to pull down the sheet of the castrated dead guy in the morgue. 

Amanda: Not really tons to say about Amanda this week as she was kind of off to the sidelines during this story, mainly being in interrogation and her scene with Liv in the hospital interviewing Jason. 

Everyone is SLAYING in the costume department so far this season: I’m absolutely loving having the squad almost be color coordinated with each other and matching, particularly Rollins and Carisi! I’ve seen them multiple times within just these first 3 episodes matching in grey, navy, white and other colors. And it is refreshing to see Liv in t-shirts at home with Noah and her hair is probably my favorite one she has ever had! I love the lighter caramelly brown she has with the side parted waves! Mariska slays a side part, and I love it 1,000 times more than the middle part.
