chapter four

summary: Wallace gives Hasan the 411, and he decides tiny dancer is a person he has to get to know better, Wallace has a birthday party

One dance. The understatement of the century.

It had been an hour, and you, Cedar, and Auggie were still tearing it up on the dancefloor, several drinks consumed. Hasan had been hoping to have more conversation, but alas, you hadn't even so much looked in his direction.

It's Wallace who notices him, approaching him after ordering a drink. He sees Hasan watching the dancing. "You could join us, that would be more entertaining than watching, as such in most aspects in life," Wallace teases, winking. Hasan laughs. "No, I prefer talking."

"No offense man, but why did you come to the club?"

"I was hoping you wouldn't human sacrifice my friend," Hasan jokes, but he continues to watch you dance, this time to Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne.

Wallace sees Hasan eyeing you. "Uh huh. Sure. Definitely not because of our little friend out there on the dance floor."

Hasan turns to look at Wallace, who has a giant smirk plastered on his face. He leans, as if going to tell some monumental secret.

"She's single, you know." Hasan raises his eyebrows. "Really? She's not into any of you guys?" Wallace cocks his head. "Well, I didn't say that. I just said she's single." He winks again. "Who is she into?" The words leave Hasan's mouth before he can even register it.

Wallace shakes his head. "I can tell you about the guys, but that's the most I'll give you, I don't want her to strangle me," he jokes.

Hasan makes a gesture to continue.

"The guys she's dancing with, Cedar and Auggie. Auggie and her have been friends since like, fourth grade. Family friend or whatever. He's super into Lydia. He's been too shy to say anything, she's been trying to help him for months. She's uhh, not a very good wingman. Cedar's gay. I know, from well..."

Hasan gives a knowing nod and a smirk. "Nice."

"I'd say the only two who might give you some resistance are Ridley and Ellis."

"Yeah, I've noticed Ellis," Hasan frowns.

"Ellis has noticed you," Wallace responds. Hasan turns his gaze back to the dancefloor where Ellis has joined your group to dance.

"No one really knows what sort of thing is going on with them, but still, I can't imagine you have no shot...for reasons I can't enclose. Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but I was outvoted." Wallace has a look on his face Hasan cannot decipher.

"Why not?"

Wallace shifts expressions. "Secrets for another time. And Ridley only has a minor crush, but he is so....she wouldn't be into him. Plus, the guy is so friendly that if you say something, he'd back off. Trust me, I know them."

"Why are you telling me all this, anyways?"

"Look man, Ellis is my friend, but I gotta look out for our girl first. And I don't know you, but something isn't right about the two of them. And she seems to somewhat not mind you enough to not tell Blaire to stop inviting."

The two men share a nod of understanding.

"Come to my birthday party. It's in our dorm living room slash kitchen. Next Friday. Consider it an invitation of friendship. We're friends now. Don't think, just say yes."

"Alright." And with that, Wallace grabs his drink and sinks back into the dancing crowd.

Hasan doesn't see you later that night. He doesn't see you until days later. The campus has to be smaller than he really thinks, because there you both were in the dining hall that Tuesday.

He sees you once again working, your plate full of food, only a few bites taken. Do you ever do anything other than work your ass off when sober?

He approaches the table, but this time you notice. "Meathead."

"Tiny dancer." You gesture to the chair across you. "Sit." Well, he thinks, at least he was invited this time.

"You're being nicer this time," he points out. "Yeah well, you had a point. I guess our roommates dating means a lot of time together...so why not try to be nice? That and Wallace said he invited you to his birthday, so I have to be nice. A friend of Wallace's is a friend of the group."

Hasan thinks back to what Wallace said of Ellis, but pushes it to the back of his mind and nods. "Your food is going to be cold," he looks at your barely eaten plate. "Oh fuck, you're right." You shovel food into your mouth.

"What are you working on this time?"

"Quiz. Aquatic toxicology."

"What bizzaro ass classes are you taking?" he asks incredulously. "Aquatic toxicology," you repeat. "We got a genius here, ladies and gentlemen," he gestures at you with his hand. "Stop calling me that," you chastise him, chewing your pancake. "I will when you stop impressing me."

"What are you eating?" you ask, seeing his bowl full. "Rice, boiled egg, grilled chicken." You scrunch up your face.

"What?"

"I know I'm not supposed to assume shit, but are you a gym bro?" He nods before sighing, "Don't say it, Tiny Dancer."

"That's so frat bro."

He flicks a piece of rice at you, you jump at it, a small squeak coming out of your mouth. "I told you not to say it," Hasan shakes his head. The both of you laugh, and go back to eating.

The rest of the lunch is filled with silence, as Hasan sits quietly to let you work. When he's done, he quietly tells you goodbye, heading to his next class.

When Friday rolls around, he and Ludwig decide to just walk across campus to Murphy Hall, unsure of any set time. When they get to the living room, the whole group is, of course, already there. Several people were playing Smash Bros. Ludwig lights up at the sight. "Dibs on who's next," he calls out, flopping onto the couch next to Blaire.

Hasan sees you're in the back portion, making food. He wanders over to you. "Tiny dancer." You look up at him, your hands holding ground beef, you look incredibly amused. "Meathead," you respond, lifting up the beef. He laughs, leaning against the counter. "What are you working on?" Hasan sees various ingredients and seasonings on the counter. "Meatloaf! My favorite!" Wallace yells. You give a small nod of confirmation, continuing to mix vegetables into the meat.

"Wallace has been begging me to make meatloaf for weeks. Before break, even." "You cook a lot for them?" Hasan asks, grabbing a chunk of carrot that hadn't been mixed in, eating it. "Hey. And yes, I do. I don't know a lot, but meatloaf was one of the only things my mom taught me."

Birdie turns from the couch. "I thought you didn't have a mom," she states. Hasan raises an eyebrow at this, and you freeze. You hated bringing up your mom. "Not anymore, I don't, thanks Birdie." She frowns and turns back around. "What happened?" Hasan asks. "I don't talk about it, I just don't have a mom. Me, my dad, my sisters. That's it. After the age of 13, no mom."

"It's an uber rare secret, she won't tell anyone, even her best friend," Ellis says pointedly, having come up to the kitchen counter at the sight of you two.

"That's because it's no one's business, except mine." And with that, you're slapping the mixture onto a pan. Hasan remains quiet. When you get done with your portion of the cooking, you wash your hands and flop onto a couch. Hasan sits next to you. "I'm sorry to ask. It was personal, I shouldn't have pried."

Your shoulders softened. "I'm sorry too. I've been kind of a dick in general to you. With the meathead shit. Frat bros are kind of dicey to me, as a concept."

"I can tell," Hasan humorlessly chuckles. "My dad doesn't make a lot of money. The school gives me a scholarship, full ride. I work hard. And a lot of the guys I see from frats, they're rich guys with daddy's money, who pay for people to like them, and coast off of that, not working hard. So many of them."

"Would it offend you if I was a daddy's money guy?"

You're silent.

"Look, a lot of frat guys, and guys here in general, are like that. But I work hard too. And I'm not, you know, a total dick. And I can prove that to you."

You two eye each other a moment. Then you slowly nod. "Alright then. Friends? On a conditional basis?" You hold out your hand to shake.

"What are the conditions? I can't take a deal without understanding the ramifications." Classic Political Science major, you think.

"The moment you act like a dick, we're back to a basic non hating truce."

"Only if you stop calling me meathead. New nickname. One that's not derogatory."

"Deal." You shake on it. "I'll sleep on the new nicknames. See what my noggin can come up with."

Your phone buzzes.

I got asked (as a joke) by one of my mutuals on Insta to say what fighters my OCs would main in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and uhhh I did it lol

Jared: Samus, due to her having gun-like projectiles being a huge part of her moveset! Jared likes zoning out people via playing the most spammy Samus missle spam ever, really just to see them mald like hell and for them to SD

Devon: LITTLE MAC!!! Devon already knows how to box (and just fistfight in general) really damn good, so seeing a fighting game character that boxes AND is mute, immediately made him click and project onto Little Mac

Ren: Sephiroth, since uhhh the massive ōdachi 🤷‍♀️ Ren is a huge sucker for hyping up his family’s historical/cultural roots, so seeing a character that speaks Japanese and wields that sword, immediately attracted him to being the most sweaty and try-hard Sephiroth main EVER

Deangelo: Ridley, since Deangelo has also been ‘reborn’ as a biomechanical being, and that YES, he too can violently impale people with his body! He really just does just spam down-b to get that sweet spot and THEN he spams side-b

‘John’: He literally cannot play the game without melting the controller in his bare hands, since he gets too excited at having genuine fun and thus his hands begin to heat up and begin to leak his acidic goo ☹️ But if he had to main someone, it’ll probably be male Wii Fit Trainer, since he likes how technical and complex their kit is (plus he finds solace in seeing a character that also has solid white skin/is physically mannequin-like)

‘Mark’: He ALSO literally cannot play the game without melting the controller in his bare hands, but if he had to main someone, it’ll probably be Bowser! He just thinks that a giant flame breathing dragon-turtle looks cool as hell and likes how monstrous Giga Bowser is ESPECIALLY! If he could play the game though, he’ll just spam down b and up b to piss everyone off, before ending up in last place due to SD-ing so much with down b or failing to string somebody off stage with foward air + back air

Lydia: King Dedede since she’s not really into fighting games at all BUT likes funny cutesy mascots a ton, but will probably SD a ton when trying to recover or pull combos off with the gordos. She is a big fan of playing the Spirit Board though, since she goes at her own pace and likes looking up which character spirit come from what game series

Lawerence: ABSOLUTELY HATES VIDEO GAMES. He literally views them as the lowest form of art/entertainment, and if he was FORCED to pick a character, he’ll just passively pick Mario since he’s the most recognizable video game mascot ever

[R]: Kirby! He’ll just pick them since Kirby is super cute and very visually pleasing to see in [R]’s eyes. HOWEVER, as he learns more about the other characters in the game, he learns about Solid Snake and…… immediately becomes obsessed with him 😭 He cannot play Snake well AT ALL and keeps loosing easily, but [R] is just so infatuated to see a character that’s a human clone, that’s shown in a postive light/is a hero! (He ends up also liking Mewtwo, the Blood Falcon alt for Captain Falcon, Dark Pit, etc, basically ALL of the clone characters)

B055: Steve. As part super computer that can essentially see two steps ahead of literally Anything, either digitally or physically in the real world, he 1000% has a perfect win-rate and is TRUELY undefeatable. Still, he willingly ‘sandbags’ on purpose when playing with [R] and Lydia, so they can have more fun together :’D

sadie is here for one reason and one reason only; her brothers. the teagues are thick as thieves -- literally -- and no one is able to come between them. it’s hard to seperate people that bonded through trauma; first the wounds inflicted by their father, then by orion bartholomew. they stepped from the frying pan into the fire when it came to father figures. they had to hold onto each other, and due to their shared experiences, anyone on the outside was mistrusted immediately. in elias, this lack of trust in anyone but themselves is still very much present. sadie is a firm believer in not needing anyone else, in being fine with just the three of them, and anyone willing to take away her brothers is seen as a threat. without their mother, sadie stepped into the maternal role, trying to take care of logan and beckham as best as she can, but it’s pretty clear that she’s nowhere near ready to do so. from messed up meals saved by takeout and ordering in, to messily stitched up wounds that get infected easily because she did not clean them thoroughly enough.

she’s taken two jobs to support herself, was fired from one and is threatening to get fired from the other. turns out that customer service is not her strong point, but she can get away with more as a bartender than she could as a waitress. but what does she have to put on her resumé? dabbling in the occult, being a professional cat lady, terrorising children with scary masks even when it’s not halloween? she had to face the facts and realise that she had little to nothing to offer the world outside of hallow falls. she could no longer rely on her family to put bread on the table, so she took the first few jobs she found. but waitressing was not it (apparently, telling a customer to fuck off and get a life in response to ‘can i talk to your manager’ was not appropriate in a restaurant setting), and bartending is difficult. so she found something she was good at. 

the escort life isn’t glamorous, not in the slightest, but it pays. enough to feed the three of them, enough to have a little place to receive her clients, enough to be able to stop worrying about whether their electricity or water supply will be turned off next. so no, she’s not happy, but she’s satisfied, and that’s what matters. she has her cat (that she definitely did not reanimate after his death and restore to life. definitely not. he’s just old, it’s just a silly rumor), her books and her brothers. they’re all she needs.

PAST !!

sadie, like her two brothers, was born to carrie teague, a human, and jason teague, a demon. of course, she’d only had one brother at the time, as she came after beckham and logan came after her, but of their parentage there was no doubt. from birth, it was firmly established that the three of them could not simply be fully human. their mother was too kind, too angelic, to wonderful to have spawned those three menaces with another man, and their father was too terrible, too disgusting, too brutal to have birthed those three children with a sliver of goodness in their heart on his own. no one bothered to tell the three of them, though. so they remained in the dark, believing their mistakes were their own fault rather than their father’s.

just like her brothers, sadie had great potential. her powers manifested early on; she felt most comfortable near graveyards, talking to her friends that people around her (even in hallow falls) deemed imaginary, with a good book, her cat, and her army of ghosts. at first, they just talked to her, nudged her in the right direction and demanded a listening ear. but as she grew older, she started to refuse to listen. rebellious teenagers had problems with authority figures, and sadie was no different. whenever a ghost tried to demand something from her -- a way to help them move on, to use her as a vessel, to let their story be heard -- she refused, and it took its toll on her. she needed to be in control, but they wouldn’t let her, and whenever she lost focus for a moment, they appeared, and became visible to all, not just sadie. she’d been using her powers to keep them at bay and to protect other people from them, but it was getting harder and harder. the beings from the other side were demanding, and were now out for revenge. still, if she focused, if she stayed in control, things were fine.

actually, things were most definitely not fine. from a childhood spent hiding from an angry father and gravitating naturally towards her mother’s arms for comfort, towards the kind bookseller’s shop with little nooks to hide with her cat, to teenage years spent anxiously patching up her wounds -- and her brothers’, running away from home more times than she could count -- and always coming back for the other members of her family, to adolescence following her brothers around to a new town with new people to terrify and terrorise, to safely explore her options when it comes to her powers. but maybe that’s not what she wants anymore -- though a lifetime of sin is hard to unlearn, especially if she’s not sure what she wants.

FUTURE !!

since she dropped out of high school, walt university hasn’t been an option for sadie. elias is a place to run away to, not to settle down and have a life. but that’s what’s currently happening, as her brothers seem to have found their place and they don’t seem very hell-bent on leaving anytime soon. she’s here because of them, and because of her mother’s explicit wishes. 

so maybe she finds a reason or two to stay. a purpose, a desire. she’s a blank slate with a disturbing past, and will do anything to make sure her future is as far from bleak and blank as possible. she doesn’t have the best reputation, despite her best efforts to control it, but has no problem lying and cheating her way back into people’s good graces. needless to say, that doesn’t always work.

Nana's House Installation, London College of Fashion - Community Co-Curator

Nana's House is an interactive living room installation, as part of Designed for Life which coincided with the opening of the new campus in Stratford, East London, UK.

The living room reflects and represents a broad heterogeneity of lives and experiences in East London told through a fictional family gathered on a Sunday afternoon at Nana's house, using artefacts and QR-linked soundscapes to represent each family member.

"Nana's one of a kind, and so is her house. It's Sunday afternoon, and her Leytonstone Victorian terrace is at capacity. Mum, dad, uncle and Grandad congregate around the jollof, but I'm more interested in the sweet, spiced tea and homemade samosas that have made a regular appearance here since we took in a lodger - an Indian-Muslim exchange student from Hyderabad.

My grandparents have lived here long before I was born. The walls tell the tale of an exuberant young textile worker arriving in London in 1960, fresh from Ondo State, Nigeria, with an infatuation with the latest in fashion and design. Over the years my mum has tried to add some modern toches; working in finance, she began to share her wealth in the late 80s with a new TV and sofa - much to the apathy of Grandad, who only believes in fixing what is broken.

Grandad was a print worker, a determined trade unionist whose career ended at age 48 with a labour dispute on Wapping High Street in 1987. A "real East Londoner born within earshot of the Bow Bells", he fought the resurgence of fascism around Ridley Road Market with the 62 Group and got bruised, whilst mourning the death of his and nana's first newborn, in battles against Oswold Mosely.

He tells stories of how he fell in love with Nana in 1961 to a soundtrack of Marvin Gaye. They triumphed against melancholy and fell deeper in love. In 1966, they celebrated the World Cup win for England together, of which West Ham players were an integral factor!

Having spent the summer away from my parents, I am inspired by the community and political strength of my grandparents. I collide with my parents' capitalist complicity - working in government and global trade; they mock my uncle who gave himself earnestly and entirely to the rave scene of Lea Valley." If anyone has been following me on tumblr long enough they know i use to go by ‘ridley’. for the last 4 or 5 years i’ve used my name ‘lydia’ but now i want to switch over <3 my name i use on tumblr is now ‘mai’, its way more gender neutral !!! i’ve wanted to do this for a little while now. i originally was going to go by ‘ally’ but i felt that was quite a common name so its mai <3
