Nana's House Installation, London College of Fashion - Community Co-Curator

Nana's House is an interactive living room installation, as part of Designed for Life which coincided with the opening of the new campus in Stratford, East London, UK.

The living room reflects and represents a broad heterogeneity of lives and experiences in East London told through a fictional family gathered on a Sunday afternoon at Nana's house, using artefacts and QR-linked soundscapes to represent each family member.

"Nana's one of a kind, and so is her house. It's Sunday afternoon, and her Leytonstone Victorian terrace is at capacity. Mum, dad, uncle and Grandad congregate around the jollof, but I'm more interested in the sweet, spiced tea and homemade samosas that have made a regular appearance here since we took in a lodger - an Indian-Muslim exchange student from Hyderabad.

My grandparents have lived here long before I was born. The walls tell the tale of an exuberant young textile worker arriving in London in 1960, fresh from Ondo State, Nigeria, with an infatuation with the latest in fashion and design. Over the years my mum has tried to add some modern toches; working in finance, she began to share her wealth in the late 80s with a new TV and sofa - much to the apathy of Grandad, who only believes in fixing what is broken.

Grandad was a print worker, a determined trade unionist whose career ended at age 48 with a labour dispute on Wapping High Street in 1987. A "real East Londoner born within earshot of the Bow Bells", he fought the resurgence of fascism around Ridley Road Market with the 62 Group and got bruised, whilst mourning the death of his and nana's first newborn, in battles against Oswold Mosely.

He tells stories of how he fell in love with Nana in 1961 to a soundtrack of Marvin Gaye. They triumphed against melancholy and fell deeper in love. In 1966, they celebrated the World Cup win for England together, of which West Ham players were an integral factor!

Having spent the summer away from my parents, I am inspired by the community and political strength of my grandparents. I collide with my parents' capitalist complicity - working in government and global trade; they mock my uncle who gave himself earnestly and entirely to the rave scene of Lea Valley." Jared: Samus, due to her having gun-like projectiles being a huge part of her moveset! Jared likes zoning out people via playing the most spammy Samus missle spam ever, really just to see them mald like hell and for them to SD

Devon: LITTLE MAC!!! Devon already knows how to box (and just fistfight in general) really damn good, so seeing a fighting game character that boxes AND is mute, immediately made him click and project onto Little Mac

Ren: Sephiroth, since uhhh the massive ōdachi 🤷‍♀️ Ren is a huge sucker for hyping up his family’s historical/cultural roots, so seeing a character that speaks Japanese and wields that sword, immediately attracted him to being the most sweaty and try-hard Sephiroth main EVER

Deangelo: Ridley, since Deangelo has also been ‘reborn’ as a biomechanical being, and that YES, he too can violently impale people with his body! He really just does just spam down-b to get that sweet spot and THEN he spams side-b

‘John’: He literally cannot play the game without melting the controller in his bare hands, since he gets too excited at having genuine fun and thus his hands begin to heat up and begin to leak his acidic goo ☹️ But if he had to main someone, it’ll probably be male Wii Fit Trainer, since he likes how technical and complex their kit is (plus he finds solace in seeing a character that also has solid white skin/is physically mannequin-like)

‘Mark’: He ALSO literally cannot play the game without melting the controller in his bare hands, but if he had to main someone, it’ll probably be Bowser! He just thinks that a giant flame breathing dragon-turtle looks cool as hell and likes how monstrous Giga Bowser is ESPECIALLY! If he could play the game though, he’ll just spam down b and up b to piss everyone off, before ending up in last place due to SD-ing so much with down b or failing to string somebody off stage with foward air + back air

Lydia: King Dedede since she’s not really into fighting games at all BUT likes funny cutesy mascots a ton, but will probably SD a ton when trying to recover or pull combos off with the gordos. She is a big fan of playing the Spirit Board though, since she goes at her own pace and likes looking up which character spirit come from what game series

Lawerence: ABSOLUTELY HATES VIDEO GAMES. He literally views them as the lowest form of art/entertainment, and if he was FORCED to pick a character, he’ll just passively pick Mario since he’s the most recognizable video game mascot ever

[R]: Kirby! He’ll just pick them since Kirby is super cute and very visually pleasing to see in [R]’s eyes. HOWEVER, as he learns more about the other characters in the game, he learns about Solid Snake and…… immediately becomes obsessed with him 😭 He cannot play Snake well AT ALL and keeps loosing easily, but [R] is just so infatuated to see a character that’s a human clone, that’s shown in a postive light/is a hero! (He ends up also liking Mewtwo, the Blood Falcon alt for Captain Falcon, Dark Pit, etc, basically ALL of the clone characters)

B055: Steve. As part super computer that can essentially see two steps ahead of literally Anything, either digitally or physically in the real world, he 1000% has a perfect win-rate and is TRUELY undefeatable. Still, he willingly ‘sandbags’ on purpose when playing with [R] and Lydia, so they can have more fun together :’D

You might not all be aware of it, but Dany got to Ridley via a deal with the Casino in the first place - and some people there are very, very worried now.

"Something is up," were the words Lydia woke up to, and she was in the business long enough to be alert immediately.

She'd shushed Marissa out of her bed, gotten dressed, combed her hair and downed her first is many espressos within less than 10 minutes.

At first, the information didn't make much sense. Leo Luciano was on the warpath, definitely good to know, not necessarily impacting her business. She dealt with all of them, not only Luciano's organisation, and if the Casino remained neutral ground, she'd be alright.

But then another name started making the rounds, quickly followed by a third. Danielle Hammond. Ridley Lordin.

Murdered.

Funnily enough, Lydia's first emotion was a hint of smug satisfaction. He'd had it coming. Lordin was an asshole, one of the worst she's ever dealt with, and she still felt an old anger at him flare up regarding their negotiations about the purchase of -

Destiny. Danielle Hammond, Danielle Lordin, now.

"Is she...", she asked into the phone, realizing how her knuckles turned white around the edge of the table. Her throat was dry. "Just to clarify. Is she... a victim, too? Or is she the murderer?"

The phone cracked with static, as if her contact was speeding in a car. She could recognize rough laughter, though. "No need to put a bounty on a dead girl, is there?"

Lydia bit her tongue before she would repeat herself. Her mind was spinning. "Do you have a lead on her? Does the police know?"

"... Leo's business...," the voice crackled. "... wants them alive."

"Them?", Lydia repeated, but the call disconnected.

She forced her fingers to let go off the table.

All of this had been a horribly dumb idea. The girl should've been dead years ago, never gone into private property, not married off to a fucking celebrity.

She shouldn't curse. She was above this. She'd warned Senior Management, multiple times. They'd told her off, blinded by Lordin's fortune and a scrap of Luciano's favour.

And now, it was her who had to deal with this. A pretty, young, rich wife with ties into organised crime, murdering the city's controversial, yet equally attractive mayor.

Everyone would be all over it. It's the blend of story the media would go insane about. They'd try and shed light into every corner of their relationship.

Including the Casino's corner.

She couldn't have this happen.

She looked over at her head of security. Williams, equally tired as her, but worse at hiding it, tilted his head, questioning. "Madam?"

Was she surrounded by idiots? Did she have to give every order herself?

"Round up everyone," she commanded. "We'll help Luciano find her. Except, she'd rather be dead for me. If you have a chance at the kill, do it. She can't talk to anyone, or it'll be over for all of us."

She lifts her phone again, dialling already. At least they had a joker on their side. Frankie Mueller had sold the girl out once. If anyone knew her network, chances were it'd be him.

The call went straight to mailbox. Lydia frowned. She expected her employees to be at her disposal at any time.

"Send someone to Mueller's place," she added. "Get his ass here, and his pet girlfriend's, too. He's going to answer some questions."

With a raised eyebrow, she switched to Frankie's home number.

No connection.

Weird.

Disconcerting.

She exhaled slowly. "Be careful approaching the place. If the girl's out for blood, we better be prepared. She has every reason to come for him next."

And then, her.

She didn't say that part out loud.

I appreciate the hard work actresses like Brie Larson, Gal Gadot and Daisy Ridley put into getting into action roles, I really do. They worked their asses off and they’re super fit, but whenever I see people saying they’re “jacked” I have to laugh a bit. 

Hollywood is not ready for “jacked” female superheroes. It it were we’re be seeing bodies like the ones on the right, all proffesional athletes at the top of their sports. We’re not even talking about bodybuilding, these are funtional muscles, weightlifting, MMA fighting, rugby playing muscles. Action heroes could look like this, and I think some of them should.
