tomorrow, may 3rd is the last day of the “may day” holiday and i hope that btf remains on the #1 spot and will be the may day holiday champion. this holiday ( april 29 - may 3 ) is truly more of a golden week for tourism and not everyone will have the time to watch. may it pick up once they come back and more of em see the good reviews. having said that, i noticed today how people’s daily weibo account posted about btf. then CCTV 1 in the evening, reported about the may day films and only showed clips/mentioned btf. also the front page of beijing daily? btf.

One thing i was so nervous about when BTF was ( finally ) released was how it will be taken by the government and the air force community. So far, it all seems positive. Notice how their roadshows were private screening for military personnel too. As much as this is a movie for entertainment purposes, it also wants to send a message to the people & to the world. This was further explained in LX’s interview released today where he said,

Liu Xiaoshi believes that only by being close to the current group of test pilots, feeling, seeing, and observing can their stories be written well. "We must write the stories of the Chinese themselves. We cannot blindly imitate western movies. They ride motorcycles, and we ride motorcycles in the movies. Chinese soldiers don't do that; They go to bars, and we go too, and our troops don't like that. .” ( source )

Even in earlier interviews, LX was saying yibo was afraid to make a mistake in a “movie like this”. Yibo understood what as at stake in taking the lead role for a movie like BTF. One reason why there was virtually no training/filming leaks was they were at a secure base. and of course, he wants to give justice to the story of these men & women who protect their country.

My point is — Yibo does not shy away from projects that may be sensitive/ high stakes. or stories that no one has ever done before ( one & only for example is the first break dance themed movie in mainland china ). This is why I adore him. He does the exact opposite of what people think he should do. He could have easily chosen to do a straight up comedy movie or even a romance and call it a day. That could easily rake up some money, cause historically, movies in this may day season are of that genre and gets the top spot. But no. Even off season, he can pick traffic-star friendly themes and be done with it. Less strain for him. ( no shade to other actors but you all get the point ) No. He wants a challenge. I’m honestly in awe of what he’s been doing with his acting career and it’s a joy to be an audience for all of it. I’m excited where he takes us next 💕

As we mentioned above, there seems to be a tendency for the LX-706 to sometimes get overlooked. In fact, the first time we took a look at Roland's most recent incarnation of the LX series, even we skipped over the LX706.

Now, this wasn't at all a slight against the LX706, but rather an expression of what our customers were telling us, as most of the people shopping with us were opting either for the LX705, or if they were going to make the jump, they were going all the way to the LX708 since it was only marginally moree expensive than the 706.

For a fairly modest price increase, the Roland LX708 offers an 8-speaker system as opposed to the 6-speaker system on the LX706, more powerful amplifiers and a taller cabinet.

This brings us to 2022, and as everyone is well aware, we’re living in a time of extreme inflation. The piano industry has not been immune to this and as a result, we’ve experienced a series of significant price hikes on many products, to the point that LX708 is now quite a bit more expensive than the LX706 costing almost as much as a new piano of the acoustic baby grand variety.

The LX706 now occupies the price point that the LX708 did when we first reviewed the series. This being the case, we suspect that the LX706 is going to start getting a lot more attention, especially from folks in the market looking to keep the budget well under $10,000, whether that’s Canadian or American currency.

Let’s start by discussing everything sound related to the LX706.

Digital Piano Sound Roland LX706 Sound Engine Roland’s PureAcoustic Piano Modeling

The LX706 is loaded up with Roland’s newest and most advanced piano sound engine with the PureAcoustic Modeling Ambience Technology engine.

Modeling technology refers to the real-time creation of piano tone that is not dependent on the playback of a sample. This means that we’re working with a computer model that’s taking into account many sound-related factors such as the striking of the string by a hammer, cabinet resonance, soundboard type and even the mechanical sounds that the pedals make.

This gives the user an immense level of control to go in and tweak a number of parameters to further shape the piano tone to their preference.

That said, this engine sounds pretty darn great right out of the box, to the point that many users won’t ever even feel the need to get in there and edit the tone.

American & European Grands

The PureAcoustic engine features two core grand piano patches. While Roland hasn’t specified which two pianos they used for inspiration and simply refers to the two presets as American and Europe, their website shows photos of a Hamburg Steinway and New York Steinway so it’s safe to assume that these are the instruments these presets were modeled after.

The European and American Grands have very different characters, which is welcome as it gives us a lot of variety to work with. Starting with the European Grand, and the kind of depth and sustain we’re hearing means that they’ve definitely modeled a 9’ concert grand piano. Switching over to the American Grand, and that’s definitely the case here too.

Interestingly, between those two sounds the American sound is slightly more open and sounds a little less blended than the European, nor is the American sound as thick.

Roland has made significant efforts in recent years to increase the dynamics of their sound engines, and what we mean by that is the variations in tone between playing loud and soft. Roland was known for being a step behind Kawai in this regard, but now we would definitely put them on a level playing field.

PianoDesigner

As we mentioned above, there’s a crazy amount of user control available with this tone engine, similar to the level of control you get with some VSTs like Pianoteq.

With that in mind, there are actually three levels of editing that you can get into depending on how deep you want to go. For those looking at it simply there’s the My Stage feature, which is really a set of presets with different configurations of the parameters.

If you want to go a layer deeper, you can directly edit 6 bigger picture parameters - PureAcoustic Ambience, Key Touch, Brilliance, Master Tuning, Temperament, and Hammer Response.

Finally, if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, there’s the Piano Tone Edit button, and this gets quite intense, allowing you to edit things like Single Note Character, Single Note Volume, Single Note Tuning, Soft Pedal Manipulation, Damper Noise, Soundboard Type, Cabinet Resonance, Key Off Resonance, Full Scale String Resonance, Duplex, Hammer Noise, Key Off Noise, and Lid height.

Polyphony

Another thing that’s very notable about this engine is that the polyphony is limitless on all piano category tones.

Is this really necessary? Not really, since anything over about 96 and up is going to be fine for solo piano playing anyway, but it does show just how powerful this sound engine is.

Other Sounds

Moving out of the acoustic piano tones, and things shift over to a more conventional tone generator delivering 256 notes worth of polyphony across more than 300 total sounds.

Roland’s electric pianos are probably the best in the industry with the most realistic playing experience, and the organs would also be in that conversation. In fact, all of the core sounds are of professional quality, and once you get past those, we move into the General MIDI 2 bank, which is why the total count is so high.

Navigating the various sounds is quite easy on board, but it’s even easier on a smart device via the new Roland Piano App, which replaces the somewhat clunky Piano Every Day app.

Acoustic Projection Speaker Sound System

The LX-706 features a powerful 6-speaker system referred to as the Acoustic Projection Sound System.

The 6 speakers consist of a pair of large cabinet speakers with speaker box, a pair of slightly smaller near-field speakers with speaker box, and finally a pair of tweeters.

The total amplifier power is a robust 74 watts, and Roland has done an excellent job of integrating the speaker system into the cabinet of the instrument, resulting in some very organic-sounding cabinet resonance.

While the speakers may be even better on the LX-708, this is nonetheless a serious hi-fi setup.

Keyboard Action Roland LX706 Hybrid Grand Hybrid Grand Keyboard

Whereas the LX705, like most other higher tier Roland digital pianos, uses the PHA-50 action, the LX-706 receives the more advanced action that only otherwise goes in the LX-708 - the very exclusive Hybrid Grand Keyboard with wooden siding.

What makes this action more advanced than the beloved PHA-50? Something that isn’t talked about as much as it should be in the digital piano space - is pivot length.

The logic here is that the closer a digital piano’s pivot point is to that of a real piano (generally a grand piano), the closer the sense of motion and control is going to be to that of an acoustic piano.

We’ve gone in and measured, and the Hybrid Grand action is boasting a pivot length that matches most 7-foot grand pianos. In fact, the Hybrid Grand has a longer key pivot length than any other digital piano action as it’s even slightly longer than Kawai’s much revered Grand Feel III.

The end result is an action that is arguably the best digital piano key action outside of the actual acoustic piano actions used in the Hybrid instruments from Kawai and Yamaha.

The keys feel very even regardless of where you play them, and advanced techniques typically reserved for acoustic piano actions are possible here, making even advanced classic repertoire totally possible.

Stabilizer Pin

Another feature worth highlighting is the presence of a stabilizer pin, a vertical pin that sits in the middle of every key near the back.

This has the same effect as the balance rail pins do on an acoustic piano which is to provide torsional stability. This means there is no lateral motion when playing this action, and also ensures excellent long-term durability.

Escapement, Triple Sensor & Textured Key Tops

Another thing that needs to be highlighted with this action is the presence of escapement, which is a recreation of the same physical feeling one gets when playing an acoustic grand piano action.

The Hybrid Grand action is also loaded up with a triple sensor meaning the MIDI output and dynamic potential of the action are very good.

Like the PHA-50, there are also Ebony and Ivory feel textures on the top of the keys here which provide a good sense of glide while also absorbing skin oils.

Additional Features Roland LX706 Dimensions Cabinet & Finish Options

The LX706 features a gorgeous cabinet with seriously impressive carpentry. In fact, the LX series cabinets arguably feature the nicest carpentry in the class.

In terms of the finish options, the LX-706 is available in your choice of Charcoal Black, Dark Rosewood, or Polished Ebony for an additional cost.

Connectivity

The LX-706 features the standard array of connectors one would expect from a high-end home digital piano.

Running down the list we have dual headphone jacks, USB Type A and B, a stereo mini line in and 1/4” L/MONO, R output jacks.

The LX-706 is also equipped with both Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth Audio, meaning you can take advantage of the 706’s excellent speaker system by streaming music directly from a device through the piano.

Other Functions

The LX-706 is loaded up with almost 400 built-in songs including the Roland Piano Masterpieces and a large stable of lesson music.

It also has a built-in 3-part MIDI recorder so pianists can record their practice sessions or do some arranging, as well as all of the standard features one would expect like a metronome, transpose, twin piano, split, layer etc.

Closing Thoughts

Given everything the Roland LX706 has to offer, and most importantly, the fact that it’s also equipped with the same core features as the LX-708, namely the PureAcoustic engine and exclusive Hybrid Grand action, with the large price difference now in effect it seems like a safe bet that it will increase in popularity.

Sure, there will always be those who want to go all the way and get the superior speakers and cabinet only found in the LX-708, but the fact remains; the LX-706 is one of the single nicest home digital pianos on the market, period.

My quick review of the ASUS XG27UQ monitor (4K, HDR, 120Hz)

I originally wanted to tweet this series of bullet points out but it was getting way too long, so here goes! I got this to replace a PG278Q, which was starting to develop odd white stains, and never had good color reproduction in the first place (TN film drawbacks, very low gamma resulting in excessively bright shadows, under-saturated shadows, etc.)

The hardware aesthetic is alright! The bezels may feel a bit large to some people, but I don’t mind them at all. If you’re a fan of the no-bezel look, you’ll probably hate it. There is a glowing logo on the back that you can customize (Static Cyan is my recommendation), but it isn’t bright enough to be used as bias lighting, which would’ve been nice.

The built-in stand is decent; it comes with a tacky and distracting light projection feature at the bottom. It felt quite stable, though I don’t care about it because it got instantly replaced by an Ergotron LX arm. (I have two now, I really recommend them in spite of their price.) 

The coating is a little grainy and this is noticeable on pure colors! You can kinda see the texture come through, a bit more than I’d like. Not a huge deal though.

The default color preset (”racing mode”), which the monitor is calibrated against, is very vivid and saturated. It looks great! But it’s inherently inaccurate, which bothers me, so I don’t like it. It looks like as if sRGB got stretched into the expanded gamut of the monitor.

sRGB “emulation” looks very similar to my Dell U2717D, whose sRGB mode is factory-calibrated. However, the XG27UQ’s sRGB mode has lower gamma (brighter shadows), so while the colors are accurate, the gamma is not. It feels 1.8-ish. Unless you were in a bright room, it would be inappropriate for work that needs to have accurate shadows. This mode also locks other controls, so it’s not the most useful, but the brightness is set well on it, so it is usable!

The “User Mode” settings use the calibrated racing mode as a starting point, which is a big relief. So it’s possible to tweak the color temperature and the saturation from there! I checked pure white against my Dell monitor and my smartphone (S9+) and tried to reach a reasonable 3-way compromise between them, knowing that the Dell is most likely the most accurate, and that Samsung also allegedly calibrates their high-end smartphones well. My configuration ended up being R:90/G:95/B:100 + SAT:42. This matches the saturation of the U2717D sRGB mode fairly closely. You also get to choose between 1.8, 2.2, and 2.5 gamma too, which is not too granular, but great to have. It kinda feels like my ideal match is between 2.2 and 2.5, but 2.2 is fine.

The color gamma according to lagom.nl looked fine, but I had to open the picture in Paint, otherwise it was DPI-scaled in the browser, and that messed with the way it works!! (That website is an amazing resource for quick monitor checks.)

Colors are however somewhat inaccurate in this mode. It’s easy to see by comparing the tweaked User Mode vs. sRGB emulation. There are some rather sizeable hue shifts in certain cases. I believe part of this is caused by the saturation tweak not operating properly.

Here’s a photo of what the Photoshop color picker looks like when Saturation is set to 0 on the monitor, vs. what a proper grayscale conversion should be. It’s definitely not using the right coefficients. 

So in practice, when using the Racing & User modes, compared to the U2717D sRGB, here’s a few examples of what I see:

Reds are colder (towards the purple side) & oversaturated

Bright yellow (255,215,90) is undersaturated

Bright green (120,200,130) is undersaturated

Dark green (0,105,60) is fine

Magenta (220,13,128) is oversaturated

Dark reds & brown (150,20,20 to 90,15,10) is oversaturated

Cyan (0,180,240) is fine 

Pink (230,115,170) is fine

Some shades of bright saturated blue (58,48,220) have the biggest shifts.

The TF2 skin tone becomes slightly desaturated and a bit colder

It’s not inaccurate to the point of being distracting, and you always have the  sRGB mode (with flawed gamma?) to check things with, but it’s definitely not ideal, and some of these shifts go far enough that I wouldn’t recommend this monitor for color work that needs to be very accurate.

I’ve went back and forth, User vs sRGB, several times, on my most recent work (True Sight 2019 sequences). I’ve found the differences were acceptable for the most part; they bothered me the most during the Chronosphere sequence, in which the hazy sunset atmosphere turned a bit into to a rose gold tint, which wasn’t unpleasant at all — and looked quite pretty! — but it wasn’t what I did.

I’m coming from the point of view of a “prosumer” who cares about color accuracy, but who ultimately recognizes that this quest is impossible in the face of so many devices out there being inaccurate or misconfigured one way or the other. In the end, my position is more pragmatic, and I feel that you gotta be able to see how your stuff’s gonna look on the devices where it’ll actually be watched. So while I’ve done color grading on a decent-enough sRGB-calibrated monitor, I’ve always checked it against the inaccurate PG278Q, and I’ve done a little bit of compromising to keep my color work looking alright even once gamma shifted. And so, now, I’ll also be getting to see what my colors look like on a monitor that doesn’t quite restrain itself to sRGB gamut properly.

Well, at least, all of that stuff is out of the box, but...

TFTCentral (one of the most trustworthy monitor review websites, in my opinion) has found suspiciously similar shifts. But after calbration, their unit passed with flying colors (pun intended), so if you really care about this sort of stuff and happen to have a colorimeter... you should give it a try!

I hope one day we’ll be able to load and apply an ICC/ICM profile computer-wide, instead of only being able to load a simple gamma curve on the GPU with third-party tools like DisplayCAL. Even if it had to squeeze the gamut a bit...

Also, there are dynamic dimming / auto contrast ratio features which could potentially be useful in limited scenarios if you don’t care about color accuracy and want to maximize brightness. I believe they are forced on for HDR. But you will probably not care at all.

IPS glow is not very present on my unit; less than on my U2717D. However, when it starts to show up (more than a 30°-ish angle away), it shows up more. UPDATED: after some more time with the monitor, I wanna say that, in fact, IPS glow isit's slightly stronger, and shows up sooner (as in, from broader angles). It requires me to sit a greater distance from the monitor in order to not have it show up and impede dark scenes. It is worse than on my U2717D.

Backlight bleed, on the other hand, is there, and a little bit noticeable. On my unit, there’s a little bit of blue-ish bleed on the lower left corner, and some dark-grey-orange bleed for a good third of the upper-left. However, in practice, and to my eyes, it doesn’t bother me, even when I look for it. It ain’t perfect, but I’ve definitely seen worse, especially from ASUS. The photo above was taken at 100% brightness, and I’ve tried to make it just a tad brighter than what my eyes see, so hopefully it’s a decent sample.

Dead pixels: on my unit, I have 5 stuck dead green subpixels overall. There are 4 in a diamond pattern somewhat down and right to the center of the screen, and another one, a bit to the right of that spot. All of them kinda “shimmer” a little bit, in the sense that they become stronger or weaker based on my angle of view. They’re a bummer but I haven’t found them to be a hindrance. Took me a few days to even notice them for the first time, after all.

HDR is just about meaningless and uses some global dimming techniques, as well as stuff that feels like... you know that Intel HD driver feature that brightens the content on the screen, while lowering the panel backlight power in tandem, to save power, but it kinda flattens (and sometimes clips) highlights? It kinda looks like that sometimes. Without local dimming, HDR is just about meaningless.

Unfortunately, the really nice HDR support in computer monitors is still looking like it’s going to be at the very least a year out, and even longer for sub-1000 price ranges. (I was holding out for the PG27UQX at first, but it still has no word on availability, a whole year after being announced, and will probably cost over two grand, so no thanks.)

G-Sync (variable refresh rate) support is... not there yet?! The latest driver does not recognize the monitor as being compatible with the feature. And it turns out that the product page says that G-Sync support is currently being applied for. Huh. I thought they had special chips in those monitors solely for the feature, but it’s possible this one does it another way? (The same way that Freesync monitors do it?)

DSC (Display Stream Compression) enables 4K 120Hz to work through a single DisplayPort cable, without chroma subsampling. And it’s working for me, which came as a surprise, as I was under the impression this feature required a 2000-series Turing GPUs. (I have a 1080 Ti.) I was wrong about this, it’s 144 Hz that requires DSC. And I don’t have it on this Pascal card. But I don’t really care since I prefer to run this monitor at 120 Hz, as it’s a multiple of the 60 Hz monitor next to it.

Windows DPI scaling support is okay now. Apps that are DPI-aware, and the vast majority of them are now, scale back and forth between 150% and 100% really well as they get dragged between the monitors! The only program I’ve had issues with is good old Winamp, which acted as if it was 100% on the XG27UQ... and shrinked down on another monitor. So I asked it to override DPI scaling behaviour (”scaling performed by: application”), which keeps the player skin at 100% on every monitor, but any call to system fonts and UI (Bento skin’s playlist + Settings panel) are still at 150%. So I had to set the playlist font size to 7 for it to look OK on the non-scaled monitor!

A few apps misbehave in interesting ways; TeamSpeak, for example, seen above, scales everything back from 150% to 100%, and there is no blurriness, but the “larger layout” (spacing, etc.) sticks.

Games look great with 4K in 27 inches. Well, I’ve only really tried Dota 2 so far, but man does it get sharp, especially with the game’s FXAA disabled. It was already a toss-up at 1440p, but at 4K I would argue you might as well keep it disabled. However, going from 2560x1440 to 3840x2160 requires some serious horsepower. It may look like a +50% upgrade in pixels, but it’s actually a +125% increase! (3.68 to 8.29 million pixels.) For a 1080 Ti, maxed-out Dota 2 at 1440p 120hz is really trivial, but once you go to 4K, not anymore...  you could always lower resolution scale though! (Not an elegant solution if you like to use sharpening filters though, looking at you RDR2.)

Overall, the XG27UQ is a good monitor, and I’m satisfied with my purchase, although slightly disappointed by the strong IPS glow and the few dead subpixels. 7/10

2020 Lexus LX 570 Review

The Lexus LX 570 is a truly forcing SUV with a sensational front grille that looks prepared to breathe in anything in its way. Underneath are the rough underpinnings of the amazing Toyota Land Cruiser. Thus, this huge SUV offers an uncommon blend of size, comfort and rough terrain capacity.

Lexus offers no trim levels and not many choices, so every LX sold is all around designated. The greatest decision for purchasers is whether to decide on a few lines of seats. Inside, the LX 570 is a voyage transport, with genuine wood, flexible padding and tight form quality. Its most critical imperfection is an obsolete infotainment framework. The controls are difficult to find, the menu is disappointing, and the joystick is not really worth utilizing. In a class that underscores client experience, the LX is far behind.

Is it worth making good an immense wad of cash for a vehicle that is generally unaltered since 2008, particularly when numerous contenders are more present day and not all that unpleasant around the edges? It generally relies upon your needs. The LX never battles to establish a connection, however opponents, for example, the BMW X7, Lincoln Navigator and Land Rover Range Rover are commendable other options.

The Lexus LX 570 is old. It stays a faultlessly manufactured and great bit of apparatus. Its qualities, especially as a 4x4 junkie, make it deserving of thought. In any case, the two-column variant does not have a portion of the three-line's reasonableness, and most purchasers' needs will be ideally serviced by different vehicles.

How can it drive?

The LX 570 is monstrously skilled rough terrain however demonstrates less so on asphalt. In normal driving, the V8 feels sluggish and not particularly brisk to turn up, and it needs force at the low end where you'd anticipate it. It's a tall vehicle and inclines discernibly reciprocally.

The guiding is incredibly weighty at parking area speeds and excessively light on the expressway, with poor on-focus feel that makes it simple to float from a straight line.
