Lustana (Chicago, Illinois) completely caught me off guard. First, their tag is "devotional"...not something that usually gets me to listen. But I loved the cover.

This release is a two-song 7". The first song, "See You In September" sounds like a lo-fi Lawrence Arabia song. It really is that good (the Bandcamp notes state that the song was originally performed by The Tempos in 1959...but Lustana's version is quite different). The 2nd song "Fuzz Pop No. 2" is a wonderful pop gem. If it wasn't for the lo-fi charm, I would say it reminds me of some of the finest songs from Beulah.

This is released by Haju Tapes & Records (Marin City, California). Lustana does have a few other releases on Bandcamp.

First SL Reflection

Humble Aspirations: Teacher Fe’s Journey of Hope

Part of the course requirements in our Lasallian Business Leadership, Ethics, and CSR course is a Service Learning Project that would support a specific organization through volunteerism. Our group (composed of 9 members), chose to help Teacher Fe’s advocacy. Teacher Fe Matullano Lustanas has been already recognized by different media organizations and advocacy groups. She is a primary school teacher in La Huerta Elementary school and she has an advocacy of upholding everyone’s right to education. Her advocacy, the Journey of Hope, mainly supports the children aged 2-4 years old but also caters the needs of adults, senior citizen, and parents. She conducts learning classes in several parts of the city particularly under the La Huerta Bridge in Parañaque City, Metro Manila. Her story is hitting the hearts of everyone because anyone can easily recognize the passion and energy of Teacher Fe in fulfilling her mission to these children. In an interview with CNN Philippines, she mentioned, “Sabi ko nga sa sarili ko: ang mga kabataan na ito ‘pag hindi ko binigyan ng pagkakataon na mapangalagaan sila sa kanilang murang gulang, ano na ang mangyayari sa kanila sa darating na panahon?”

Our group visited Teacher Fe in La Huerta Elementary School last Monday. It was a holiday so were able to visit as a complete group. We did brainstorming sessions with her and her brother and finally came up with the final plan as to how we can help her in her advocacy. Since this is a personal advocacy, she wanted the Journey of Hope to be registered with the local authorities as an official organization in order for the institution to directly receive volunteers and donations. Currently, sponsorships for Journey of Hope goes through the iVolunteer Philippines. To sum up, the following excerpt from our project proposal describes what our commitments to the Journey of Hope are:

Our group would like support Teacher Fe in advancing her advocacy. Few months ago, a previous group had already helped her through the Project ECHO—assisting her in familiarizing the steps and guidelines that she needs to follow in order to register her advocacy with government authorities to completely authorize it as a non-stock/non-profit organization that can directly receive donations. We would like to continue the ties between the university and the organization. As such, we would like to propose to help Teacher Fe on moving on to the next steps. We would like to help her in materializing the requirements so she can proceed to the actual registration of her advocacy to the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) of the Philippines. Inclusive of this help are: the formulation of the organization’s mission, vision, objectives, as well as the constitution of the legal documents. We would also like to help her in rebuilding the Journey of Hope’s online platform by which would make the organization more proficient, reach wider audience and potential sponsors. A video will also be produced at the end of the Service Learning project.

From our discussion with Teacher Fe, we indeed perceived her passionate heart. You can recognize her energy and willingness. I was struck with what Teacher Fe has shown us. Meron pa pa lang taong ganito. Yung taong hindi makasarili. Yung kayang gawin ang lahat kahit na walang kapalit. O kung meron man, yun yung sense of accomplishment, yung malaman mo lang na may mapasaya at natulungan kang tao.

We were moved. During those moments, I felt that this is beyond the requirements of the course. From what I have heard and saw during the session, I realize that this is more than our grade. This is an advocacy. In all honesty, I did not think that we were there because of a class requirement. I deemed that we were because we wanted to help them. This is the things that the MBA Program in La Salle can do and are distinct from other business schools—there is a sense of responsibility, leadership, and social awareness. We are now on the process of getting in touch with the right people. Hopefully, this project will be able meet its goals. This would  be by far the biggest positive turn for the Journey of Hope.
