Sandringham House is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Country Estate in Norfolk. In the 1960���s, Queen Elizabeth’s & her children would celebrate Christmas at Windsor Castle. Starting in 1988, Windsor Castle was being rewired, so the Royals traveled to Sandringham for Christmas. The Sandringham Estate is set on 24 Hectares (59.3 Acres) of Garden.

Every year before the stay at Sandringham begins, Queen Elizabeth takes an empty pre-scheduled carriage of the train to from London to King’s Lynn Station in Norfolk. In the Carriage is Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, & Immediate Staff. The rest of the British Royal Family will arrive at a specific time on Christmas Eve, depending on their status. Junior Members arrive first & Important Members (Prince Charles & Camilla, The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge & their children, etc.) arrive last.

After all family members have arrived at Sandringham, the Estate can be quite crowded. Due to The Sandringham Estate not being as large as other royal family residences, some family members end up staying in the staff quarters. Staff will transfer from their normal quarters & live in either estate cottages or surrounding villages.

𝑀𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑒𝒹 𝒞𝑜𝓊𝓅𝓁𝑒𝓈

When the family arrives to the Sandringham Estate, the only family members invited to Sandringham are Married Couples & children. For example, before William & Catherine were married in 2011, the now Duchess was not allowed to attend Christmas at Sandringham. Mike Tindall (Husband of Zara Tindall) or Jack Brooksbank (Husband of Princess Eugenie) were not invited to Christmas at Sandringham, until they were officially married to their wives. The only Royal Member of the Family who has broken this protocol, is Megan The Duchess of Sussex. She attended Christmas at Sandringham, during the year she became engaged to Prince Harry Duke of Sussex.

The First Royal Christmas Tree was introduced to Sandringham House by Her Majesty Charlotte The Queen. The Tradition was kept going by Her Majesty Victoria The Queen & her husband His Royal Highness Albert Prince Consort. The Tradition of having a Christmas Tree has continued onto this day & Queen Elizabeth will let her grandchildren & great grandchildren help decorate the trees. 

The Royal Family has a Large Christmas Tree & also a 30 year old Large Silver Artificial Tree in the Dining Room at Sandringham. All the Christmas decorations  stay up until February to honor Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI who died on Wednesday, February 6th, 1952.

The day of Christmas Eve, each member of the Royal Family will lay out the presents they bought on the trestle table. The gifts are then exchanged during the Afternoon Teatime, when Prince Philip says everyone is allowed to open their gifts. The British Royal Family do have a sense of humor when it comes to giving each other gifts. Members will sometimes give each other joke presents! Example: Kate Middleton once gave Harry a “Grow Your Own Girlfriend” one year! Harry also gave his grandmother a shower cap with the saying “Ain’t life a b**ch.”

♕ 𝐹𝒶𝒸𝓉: Her Majesty does her Christmas Gift & Decorations Shopping at Harrods! The store would stay open after hours so that Queen Elizabeth could shop on her own.

♕ 𝐹𝒶𝒸𝓉: The family’s favorite treat during their Afternoon Christmas Eve Teatime is the Jam Penny Sandwiches. The Jam Penny Sandwiches are jam filled sandwiches that are cut into circles the size of an old English penny. (Size Reference Below)

Besides family, The Royal Staff are even given Christmas gifts from Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip! The week before Christmas, the staff are taken into one of the State Apartments, the Head of Staff announces his annual report of their yearly performance, & the staff are then given their gift. The staff can choose between receiving a gift token or a book token, but in order to receive their gift they must be qualified. The qualification is to been in service of the royal family for over a year & their value increases every year, they serve the royal family. Junior Staff are given a token worth £28 ($36.01) & the token increases up to £35 ($45.02). Besides tokens, the staff is also given Christmas puddings with a greeting card all paid for by the Queen. 1,500 total Christmas puddings are made & distributed.

On Christmas Eve, Prince William & Prince Harry will start up a family & staff game of soccer. They create two opposing teams using their socks: Prince William’s team represents Aston Villa Football Club & Prince Harry’s team represents Arsenal Football Club.

After eating a filling Christmas Day Lunch, the family has 2 choices of After Lunch Activities: Exercise on the Estate or Putting Together Puzzles. The choice to exercise, is to help members digest their food faster & prepare them for Christmas Dinner. The choice to put together Jigsaw Puzzles, is a fun hobby of the Queen’s & the children love it too!

The Royal Family loves Charades! Every year after their Christmas Dinner, the family will get together to play a game of charades with each other. They’ll stay up late into night playing because nobody retires to be before the Queen does.

Every year on Christmas Morning, the British Royal Family attends the Christmas Church Service at St. Mary Magdalene Church. The entire family walks together in a group & is led by Prince Philip but Her Majesty The Queen, is driven in a car to the church. The family attends a private service just for them at 9 A.M & there is a public service at 11 A.M for anyone who wants to attend. For the Public Service, attendees must pass a security check several months before December.

Just like the rest of the families around the world who celebrate Christmas, the British Royal Family have Christmas meals together. Before the family arrives at Sandringham, each member has to practice their French because the Lunch & Dinner menus are in French. Guests are allowed to bring a dish if they choose to.

♕ 𝐿𝓊𝓃𝒸𝒽: After a morning of reflecting at Church, the family will join together for a big lunch. The Lunch includes Salad with Shrimp or Lobster, Turkey (2 Turkeys that are each 25 pounds), Parsnips, Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, & Christmas Pudding with Brandy Butter.

♕ 𝒟𝒾𝓃𝓃𝑒𝓇: After a long day of festivities, the family will once again join together for a big dinner. Unlike the Christmas Lunch where you order your food, Christmas Dinner is a buffet! Dinner includes Rib Roast, Turkey, Ham, & other delicious dishes. Before dinner begins & the family goes inside the dining room, the senior chef must carve whatever meat is served, present the Queen with a glass of Whiskey, & the Queen says a toast to the family & staff. Children are not allowed at Dinner until they are of proper age of behavior, so the young ones are sent off to the nursery.

Beginning in 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has given an Annual Christmas broadcast to all of the Commonwealth. In her broadcast, the Queen will reflect on the past year & talk about what is to come in the future for her family & for the Commonwealth. The broadcast were not televised like they are today until 1957 & are pre-recorded in a Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace just a few days before Christmas. Every year, the family will join together in a sitting room after lunch (The broadcast takes place at 3PM) to watch the Queen’s broadcast together.

My happiness is… How my varsity squash career went so wrong, but so right

Michaela here, your resident university squash player. No, squash is not the same as racquetball. No, you don’t get hit by the ball that often. But yes, it bloody hurts when you do.

I’ve grown up in what you would call the epitome of #SquashFam. My dad was (and is) pretty freaking good at squash – 2x individual and 3x team OUA champion, former #1 player in Trinidad. My sister is the current #1 player on the Western University team. Our parents actually met playing squash in the great city of London, Ontario, where I have been living for the last 6 years.

It should be no surprise that I started playing squash when an adult racquet was probably taller than me. I played recreationally throughout my childhood, but it was mostly just a place to hang out with friends. Instead, I was enjoying a rather illustrious gymnastics career, while also dabbling in a gazillion other sports. However by my mid-teens, it became evident that my time gymnastics was coming to an end (story for another day). Being the ‘all or nothing’ type of person I am, I knew I needed to find another sport that I could throw myself into. With an international coach at my fingertips (shoutout to Coach Khan aka Dad), squash seemed like a decent place to start.

One little problem. As it turned out, I really, really, really hated squash. Emphasis on the really.  

I cannot tell you how many times I threatened to quit. I would cry in the change rooms after (sometimes during) practice, thinking how anyone could enjoy this absolutely brutal sport. Chasing around a tiny, uncontrollable ball while trapped in a 4 walled room... That was supposed to be… fun?!

LOL. Apparently.  

Fast forward a few years. As much as I despised squash, I was fueled more by competitiveness than hatred. The more tournaments I entered and got my ass handed to me in, the more I desired to master the crazy game. Finally, I made the decision to try out for the squash team at the same university my Dad had played at the #1 position for.

I miraculously made it through try-outs and onto the playing team, but my first year on the team was incredibly trying. I still hadn’t fully figured out if I actually liked the sport, but I had decided I didn’t fit in on the team. New teammates, new coaches, new school. I struggled so much socially that just showing up to practice seemed like a chore. Squash may be an individual sport, but I had never felt so isolated.  

Thankfully, the ball seemed to become more controllable as I moved through university. I made the jump from the #4 player in my 1st year to the #2 player in my 3rd year, and looked set to hold down the #1 spot in my 4th year. I had made life-long friends on the team, endured punishing tournaments that pushed me to my limits, and was maintaining a solid GPA. My love for the sport was blossoming. Squash dominated my thoughts, even when I wasn’t on court.  

Life may have seemed good on the outside, but inside, a storm was brewing. One year after another, I would end the season with one of my feet in a cast. The third time I slipped on my trusty old Aircast boot, my doctor wouldn’t clear me to play. Weeks went by, then months. Finally, my injuries stretched through the seasons. Plural. It took so much of my physical and mental energy to crawl my way back to the court after so much time not being able to crawl out of bed because of the pain and heartache.    

I got there in my 6th year at Western. I rejoined the starting line-up in September 2018 - not fully functional, but at least on court.

I was out again by December 2018. Surgery scheduled for April 2019. 

‘Devastated’ doesn’t come close to describing it.  

During my recovery, I came across an article by Alex Cyr, a St FX and U Windsor track athlete (http://uwindsorlance.com/a-friendly-word-of-advice-to-fellow-student-athletes/). He talked about athletes whose lives are consumed by their sport (check), and what happens when, by cruel twists of fate, you can no longer play it anymore. He suggested that if and when that happens, to find new ways to contribute to your sport.

Looking back at my university squash career, I saw immense failure. It was painful to admit that I would never be a true #1 on the team or leave any sort of legacy. I felt like a fraud - walking around in my varsity jacket knowing how long it had been since I had played a tournament. However, after reading that article I realised that I may have still found the ‘ways’ that Alex talked about.  

I had been a 1x vice-captain and 2x captain, roles I took very seriously and still consider to be the biggest honour Western ever gave me. I had the opportunity to tour prospective high schoolers around campus. I logged hours upon hours of court time, coaching the team through drills. I cheered for my teammates in matches and travelled with them all over the province. I had the privilege of introducing players in tournaments and giving the pre-game pep talk. In the minute and a half between games, I offered teammates the best advice I had to give. Hands were held and shoulders were cried on during the hard times. Milestones – everything from first kisses to overcoming mental illnesses – were celebrated. We danced the night away at tournaments and laughed until we hit the floor. My heart would swell with pride when teammates sent me good midterm marks that had boosted their grades. My own grades had stayed consistent too – earning an OUA All-Academic Canadian certificate (and a darn good free lunch) each year and a fully funded master’s degree. I had also found my voice – less afraid to speak up when things didn’t feel right. As a 6th year veteran, I felt it was my duty to make sure that no teammate should feel like I had in my own 1st year.  

In those aspects of varsity sport life, I had not failed.  

My time on the Western University squash team will not be remembered in writing like my Dad’s achievements. My kids will not walk past squash trophies with my name on in Thames Hall or a picture of me in Western’s Student Recreation Centre. I was not an MVP, Purple Blanket winner, or an OUA All-Star. 

Did I want all those things? Hell yeah.

But things don’t always work out the way you want them to, and now I can see my gains instead of losses.

Through all my successes and failures, I will always be proud to have worn the Mustang on my chest for 6 years - as a teammate, captain, coach and, most importantly, a friend.

So for the last time - Stangs on 3.  1, 2, 3… STANGS!

I found a family on the squash team, but was also unbelievably lucky that my squash family included a member of my real life family. My sister Madison is my inspiration and I will always look up to her. Literally and figuratively – she may be younger but she happens to be much taller. Still trying to convince her to move to Vancouver with me, any help will be greatly appreciated!!! I told her she could keep kicking my butt out there but apparently that’s not enough (she’s been able to beat me for years, probably getting bored of it)

not really an au suggestion but drabble request for pierre's first christmas with the Windsors

Christmas at war time was perhaps more important than any other day in the calender, a time for peace, faith and most importantly, time for family and friends. Having gone to Sandringham for Christmas to meet with his mother, brother and sister and share the merriment with them, Albert had insisted that Pierre join them and threatened to stay in London with him if he did not come along.

Christmas Eve was a loud affair, the locals on the estate, the staff of the house and numerous dignities that had either fled the dangers or were based in the country attended a large and informal ball, the classes mixing and dancing together, the King and Queen dancing with a number of the staff and locals. It was almost as if everything was back to normal. As the lunch drew to a close and they all enjoyed as much of a feast as rations allowed, small gifts were handed out to each and every guest. Usually small tokens of thanks. Pierre’s gift was a small leather bound book, its pages blank so that he may fill it himself. The children had small piles of gifts each set upon a table in the Red Room for them to open. Though this was meant as the opening of presents usually reserved for Christmas Day itself.

That evening in a much more private setting with the King, his wife and daughters, saw Pierre being asked to help the family put the finishing touches on the tree, small ornaments made by the princess of course took priority on where they were to be put, jam pennies galore on several surfaces as the royals nearly snacked on them while decorating. The honour of putting the angel atop the tree was given to Pierre, a small step stool provided of course.

At roughly 8pm, the family were called to their dinner, and this was a much more formal event, gowns and black ties. All of the King’s family were present, his brother and sister with their spouses and children, George’s widow and her children, his mother and a few cousins that were available. One seat might have been considered spare after David had snubbed the invite, but Albert had insisted it was filled by Pierre, “A worthy addition to an otherwise -empty seat.” He had proclaimed. Each of the guests spent the time discussing matters that the war had stolen time to discuss, happy news and developments in their personal lives more than anything to do with duty. While the dinner looked formal to begin with, it tapered off to a family gathering and everyone seemed quite relaxed.

Crackers were provided in front of every plate, to be ‘cracked’ with the person to their left, that way everyone had a go. They were filled with a single wrapped sweet, a small token and a folded and flimsy paper crown. Everyone was expected to wear theirs, including Albert who was much less reluctant about putting on that particular crown, with the additional head gear, the room must have felt that much more friendly with an air of silliness likely aided by the port in each of their glasses.

Turkey timings were the main course, once again rationed but still enjoyed by the guests. Though it was the dessert that had everyone in something of a buzz. Albert surely stole a glance at Pierre, wondering if he was at all aware of what was about to happen when the Christmas Pudding was set upon the table. It was larger than most puddings but not excessively so, a trace of the smell of brandy in the air told the King that it was prepared as tradition dictated. A moment later, a butler approached and set the pudding on fire, lighting it up in a blue flame as the brandy burned and the family cheered. It was a bizarre tradition but one Albert seemed to quite enjoy.

Still flaming, the pudding was handed out to each of the guests before the flame was doused with a helping of cream. Albert quickly leaning over to warn Pierre, “Be -sure -to check your -pudding before biting into it, won’t you?” Just in case as the rest of the family lightly tapped and pulled at their share until there was the smallest of gasps from Albert’s sister, Princess Mary, who pulled a halfpenny out of her pudding with glee. The cheers came again and a small round of applause followed as she raised it up and gave playful bows to her clapping audience. As soon as it had happened, it seemed to be over and they tucked into their pudding without hesitation or caution.

It was similar in many ways to her wedding last May, where it was Prince Charles who was tasked with walking Markle down the aisle as the relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her father became increasingly fraught.

The shower was hosted by Serena Williams, Jessica Mulroney and Genevieve Hillis, who has been Markle’s best friend since the age of 17 when they met at Northwestern.

‘It was a small, private affair, and a special time for her,’ said CBS presenter, Gayle King. 

‘Having a baby is a great thing.’ 

While Markle was being feted by her newfound celebrity pals and recent co-stars at The Mark in New York City, her mother was seen walking alone in Los Angeles. 

A video, which emerged on social media after the shower, appeared to give a glimpse of the very lavish set up.

Royal fan account harry_meghan_updates, run by Instagram user Francesca, shared a video on its Story, claiming that the short clip was actually captured inside the star-studded baby shower.

It captures the dessert buffet on offer to guests which was designed by illustrator Darcy Miller, and featured four macaron towers from Laduree, which cost a total of $460.

Justin and I had to wake up at 4:50am to put out our luggage in front of our villa. We had an early flight so we were knocked out on the plane. It felt like the fastest flight ever! Coach talked to us before our flight and gave us some tips on how to not get Traveler's diarrhea, which is what I got. :( omg the bathroom at that airport had some scary looking bugs. Before they took us to the hotel, we had buffet lunch at Windsor Hotel. Food was good. Later flights didn’t have lunch buffet because they got packed lunch. We stayed at the Reverie which is part of the Leading Hotels of the World.

Tammy hooked me and just up for a free massage!! She gave us 500000 dong each. The Golden Lotus Spa & Massage was walking distance from our hotel. The workers there screwed me over on tip. My Vietnamese friends told me they’re not supposed to ask for tip. When they finished they wouldn’t let us go until we gave them tip. You know what’s wrong with them? They don’t know how to talk. They had me sitting there for a while and i had no clue why they were just standing there and smiling. Like, am I done? What am I waiting for? When I handed the lady about 80000 dong she looked at it, laughed, and asked for 200000 dong.

The dinner buffet at the hotel was good. I had yummy lasagna and soup!! I was so full but Andy and Raymond wanted to go to Mcdonald’s. We went with them but I just got a drink since I was too full. Thanks Andy for the matcha drink!
