It's been so long

Это был долгий путь... И да... Если возвращаться, то только с отсылкой НО! Я тут с новостями... С тем, что я частично приостанавливаю перевод. Почему частично? Потому что я до сих пор хочу завершить это, хоть возможно и гиблое дело... Так как для меня это уже дело чести, можете воспринимать это как бессрочный хиатус

Почему так? Потому что когда я начинал этот перевод у меня было гораздо меньше завала и я мог хоть как-то распределять приоритеты

Но вы всё это уже прочли в прошлом посте. Поэтому что я сделаю в этот раз? В этот раз я полностью доверюсь ребятам из Чудесного Домика Переводов. Они уже завершили перевод и он доступен на MangaLib. Отдайте им всю свою любовь, ведь они проделали довольно качественную работу. (А ещё у них есть ТГ канал)

Как только я допишу этот пост, я пойду, свяжусь с автором мастерпоста и попрошу чтобы меня заменили на них

Что же станет с этим аккаунтом?.. Стеной?... Боже, я так давно не была в Тамблере... Это станет моим более личным аккаунтом. Я даже буду изредка кидать какие-то репостики и посты... И надеюсь я всё-таки смогу и дальше продолжить перевод, чтобы закончить это дело и сбросить этот груз с плеч

Hello again!

I will understand if you do not answer the question. But if you can / want, tell me, please: to immerse yourself in the world of characters, I studied on the Internet how people in France address strangers. Like "ladies and gentlemen" and found information that in France it would be a "Monsieur" for a boy. But for a girl there are options for "Milady" and "Madam", depending on age and marriage. In the same article, it was written that in France women oppose such a division and demand to use one word "madam" for everyone without exception. This is true? Wouldn't it really look silly if you refer to all girls and women, for example, in the comic "Madame"? Your question isn't stupid and is most definitely not inappropriate at all, don't worry! 😄

So basically this is how it is:

Sir: Monsieur

Madam: Madame

Miss: Mademoiselle

A lady: une dame / Lady: Madame

The thing is, "Mademoiselle" is reserved to non-married women or young women. There isn't an equivalent for non-married men.

Before, on administrative papers, there used to be the three options (Monsieur/Madame/Mademoiselle). But since 2012, "mademoiselle" has disappeared from them (through a circular encouraging administrations to prioritise "Madame" and avoid "Mademoiselle"). The problem with it was that it's making assumptions or asking informations on the marital statue of women, while men don't have that.

Now administrative papers aside and at speaking, it's not forbidden per se to call a girl "mademoiselle". Most of young girls won't mind, because "madame" sounds kind of older especially since it's a pretty recent change, and will even find being called "madame" weird. Some will prefer "madame" though because of what "mademoiselle" implies or how it's uneven with men and will correct the person, though most of the times if you want to call a young boy you don't know you'll say "jeune homme" (young man) instead of "monsieur".

Usually, girls older than 30 or even 20 would automatically be called "madame" no matter their marital status, while a girl younger than 20 will very likely be called "mademoiselle". It does happen though that some older women will ask to still be called "mademoiselle" if they aren't married, but it's uncommon.

Small anecdote too: a recurring joke is for people to call old women as "mademoiselle" to make them smile as it's obvious they're not supposed to be referred that way, just like people will call old men "jeune homme" as well!

In the show, you have "Miss Bustier" that the class call "Mademoiselle Bustier" lots of times for instance, but we don't know enough of the character to know why they refer to her like that but we can assume she introduced herself as such at the start of the school year!

Are there any things on the show that are American-style and that are out of place or annoy you?

The first thing that comes to mind, for example, that Adrien is called - "Cat Noir" and in the French voice acting, it seems to be corrected, "Chat Noir". But Marinette will always calling "Ladybug". Although it seems more logical to give her the name "Coccinelle". Or is that not much of a difference from the point of view of the French world within the series?

(I understand that many people watch the Show in English and therefore the names of the characters have English names, but my question is rather, how incorrect is this for those who, like the cartoon characters, are from France?)

I don't recall any particular "very obvious American thing" in the show, given that it's pretty much the opposite and the writing goes way into the Parisian clichés.

The show of course is very inspired by American culture and super heroes, a lot of tropes come from here (also Japanese magical girls but that's another subject). We talked about it in the Discord server, here's our French/French speaking✨ opinion on English names:

Apart from the obvious lip-syncing problem it would lead to, naming our main heroine Coccinelle instead of Ladybug wouldn't sound as cool in our opinion. The name Ladybug has the advantage of including "Lady", just like many superheroes include "man", "woman" or other variations. Same for her superpowers, we like the English names! "Porte-bonheur" sounds cool but "Lucky Charm" is way better. On the other hand we think the Magical Charms were a bit too much, naming them "talisman" would have been an alternative.

We. do. not. like. Cat Noir. at all. Sorry, but it is an abomination 😂 Chat Noir all the way! We do like "cataclysme" tho, "chataclysme" would've been a bit too much. And we're used to English names in a lot of media we consume, so no problem here! It doesn't feel out of place at all. American names sound stylish in a lot of French people eyes because we watch a lot of American series, listen to American songs etc. Some French creators even give American sounding names to their creations, Totally Spies comes to mind for example. It's French-Canadian but feels very American.
