On this day in 1896, the Lumière brothers held a press screening - the first ever in the UK! - to demonstrate the Lumière Cinématographe to British journalists.

On the next day, a screening was held for a paying audience, which we reckon counts as the first ever cinema showing in this country.

All here, at Regent Street Cinema. Well, it was called the Marlborough Hall of the Royal Polytechnic Institution at the time, but still - British cinema was born right here, 127 years ago.
