Luleå HF captain Jenni Hiirikoski took a skate blade to the throat in an accident during the SDHL playoff finals on 19 March 2023. Not even three weeks later, she is leading the Finnish national team at the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship!

I don't always like the team in the town where I live, which is Luleå for those who don't know, since I'm a Skellefteå fan. But their womens team won the SDHL gold today and I love how the organisation and whole town supports them. In the best of three series between Luleå and Linköping, two games where played in Luleå and the number of people that attended at one of the games where as many as 4550(which is what their SHL team has on a bad day in their arena that seats 6300). And the fact that the organisation has a goal that in three years their womens team should be able to play hockey full time makes me respect them, and their will to work towards women being able to play hockey professionally, so much more.

SDHL as a league is making so much progress and Luleå as a team have so many amazing players, pretty much half of them where at the olympics, with players like Jennifer Walefield(CAN), Jenni Hiirikoski(FIN), Meaghan Mikkelsson(CAN) and Emma Nordin(SWE). So excited to see how SDHL and Luleå will develop in the future!

Michelle Karvinen has signed with the Ladies Team Lugano of the SWHL A

At just 30, Karvinen is one of the most accomplished members of the Finnish national team and her decision to leave the SDHL for the Swiss Women's National League (SWHL A) is huge. She has spent the past five seasons with Luleå HF and is the franchise’s all-time points leader.

With Naisleijonat Karvinen has medalled at five World Championships and two Olympics, being named Best Forward at the 2014 Olympics, in addition to reviving many other honors for significant achievements at the national and club level.

Pre-Season Tournament in Rovaniemi continues this weekend!

Naisten Liiga teams are RoKi, Kärpät, and HIFK, plus Luleå, the reigning Swedish Champions of the SDHL.

Fun fact: Luleå has the largest number of Finnish national team players of any club on the planet, with five players who will represent Finland at the World Championship later this month – Jenni Hiirikoski, Petra Nieminen, Ronja Savolainen, Noora Tulus, and Viivi Vainikka.
