The world had already ended, but Luke still found ways to be afraid.

Fear was different now—not the sharp, fleeting kind he used to feel when running late or fumbling with keys at the door of his old apartment. No, this was a deep, marrow-deep kind of fear, the kind that made his hands shake when he held a gun too tight, the kind that clawed up his throat every time Jasper Jordan pulled another reckless stunt.

Tonight had been the worst one yet.

The moment Jasper stepped through the crumbling doorway of their shelter, covered in dust and streaks of blood, Luke felt something inside him snap. The dim firelight flickered over the cut on Jasper’s cheek, the tear in his jacket, the reckless grin he always wore after one of his near-death escapes.

Luke didn’t smile back.

“Do you have a goddamn death wish?” The words left his mouth before he could stop them, harsh and unsteady. His hands curled into fists at his sides, nails digging into his palms to keep himself from shaking.

Jasper sighed, running a hand through his tangled hair. “Luke, come on—”

“No. No, I’m not doing this tonight.” Luke’s voice cracked, raw with something heavier than anger. “You ran straight into an ambush. You didn’t wait for backup. You didn’t think. You just—” He exhaled sharply, like it hurt to get the words out. “You could’ve died, Jasper.”

Jasper rolled his eyes, but there was something hollow in it. “And yet, here I am. Alive. With food and medicine, by the way.” He gestured to his pack like it excused everything. “I knew what I was doing.”

Luke let out a short, humorless laugh. “Did you? Because from where I’m standing, it looks a hell of a lot like you don’t care if you make it out alive.”

Jasper flinched—just barely, just enough for Luke to see it. But then his jaw tightened, and he put on that infuriating, devil-may-care mask of his. “I care,” he said, softer now. “I just—I do what I have to do, alright? I get shit done.”

“At what cost?” Luke’s voice broke. “Every time you pull this, every time you walk out that door and I don’t know if you’re coming back—I can’t take it, Jasper.” He took a step closer, chest heaving. “I can’t keep watching you throw yourself into the fire like you’ve got nothing left to lose.”

Jasper’s mouth opened, then shut. His throat bobbed. “That’s not fair.”

Luke huffed out a bitter laugh. “Isn’t it?” He shook his head, looking away, like if he stared at Jasper too long he might actually break apart. “I’m trying to build something here. A life. With you. And you—” His voice hitched. “You make it damn near impossible when you keep acting like you don’t plan to be around for it.”

Jasper's breath hitched, his bravado faltering for just a second. Then, in the quietest voice Luke had ever heard from him, he admitted, “I don’t know how.”

Luke’s chest ached. “How to what?”

Jasper swallowed hard, his eyes dark, tired. “How to stop running headfirst into the fire. How to be the guy who makes it home safe instead of the one who doesn’t.”

Silence settled between them, heavy and aching.

Luke let out a slow breath, then reached for Jasper’s wrist, holding it tight like an anchor. “Then learn,” he said, voice quiet but sure. “Because I’m not gonna love you just to lose you.”

Jasper’s eyes searched his, like he wanted to believe him but didn’t know how. But Luke had time. As long as Jasper stopped giving it away to reckless choices, Luke would make the time.

Luke launched himself at Jasper, grabbing him by the shoulders and pulling him close. He crashed his lips against Jasper's in a desperate, almost punishing kiss, pouring all his fear and anger and love into the movement of his mouth. His fingers tangled in Jasper's messy hair, tugging on the strands as he held him in place, not letting him pull away.

Jasper made a sound of surprise, but then he was kissing back just as fiercely, just as needily. His hands gripped Luke's waist, yanking him flush against his body until there was no space left between them. He kissed him like he was starving for it, like Luke's lips were the only thing that could fill the hollow ache inside him.

Luke nipped at his bottom lip, hard enough to taste copper. "Don't do that again," he growled against Jasper's mouth. "Don't you ever fucking do that again."

Jasper shuddered, his breath coming fast and ragged. "I won't," he promised, voice raw. "I swear I won't."

But Luke wasn't convinced, not yet. He kissed him again, softer this time, slower. He licked into his mouth, mapping out every inch of him, tasting the dust and the danger and the Jasper that always lingered on his tongue. He kissed him until Jasper was panting, until his hands were shaking, until he was slumped against the wall and Luke was the only thing holding him up.

Only then did Luke pull back, just enough to see his face. His thumb brushed over the cut on Jasper's cheek, wiping away the blood. "Stay with me," he said, voice barely above a whisper. "Stay here, with me."

Jasper nodded, his eyes never leaving Luke's. "I'm here," he breathed. "I'm not going anywhere."

Luke leaned his forehead against Jasper's, closing his eyes. Outside, the world had ended. But here, in this moment, it was just the two of them. Just a man and the reckless, stubborn, impossible man he loved.

And for now, that was enough. That was everything.

The kiss deepened, turned hungry and desperate. Luke's hands roamed over Jasper's body, fingers digging into the lean muscle of his back, his shoulders, his hips. He needed to feel every inch of him, to prove to himself that Jasper was real, that he was here and whole and unharmed.

Jasper groaned into his mouth, arching into his touch. His own hands slid under Luke's shirt, nails raking down his spine, leaving red lines of desire in their wake. The first few weeks of the relationship were rocky at first. It was definitely awkward, due to not knowing respectful boundaries. But once a conversation occurred, it was smooth sailing and you never felt better.

Every year, Scott invites you to his family's annual road trip to a large, cozy cabin during snowfall. Scott knew how much you liked cold weather, which was why you never turned down the offer. It wasn't a hassle anyways, your family was extremely close with Scott's.

The two of you spent the whole day outside. Making snow angels, snowmen and having a snowball fight. The sound of laughter and squeals filled the air whenever Scott tackled you into piles of snow.
