A Unique All-Faith Holiday Show Presented by the Indie Collaborative Filled The Bruno Walter Auditorium Stage This Month

When the Indie Collaborative held its all-faiths holiday show at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, I fulfilled my desire to attend a seasonal live show before the year’s end. On Dec. 8, 2021, from 7-8:30 pm, the show featured more than twenty award-winning Indie Collaborative artists presenting their music. Meant for all ages and faiths, it celebrated the diversity of our seasonal celebrations. Produced by co-founders Eileen Sherman and Grant Maloy Smith – with Smith emceeing – the eclectic cast included jazz trumpeters, former Stomp performers, stars of stage and a lively ukulele aficionado. Founded in 2015, The Indie Collaborative has become a vehicle for independent musicians and industry professionals (actors, poets, writers, dancers, make-up artists, producers, photographers) to connect with others in the creative arts. It puts on several kinds of events, from showcases to curated shows produced with members. There are chapter meetings and social events for its membership which includes over 2,000 collaborators from around the globe. Membership is free. There are only two requirements – be an industry professional and be dedicated to excellence in the arts. The jazz community had a significant presence at this all-ages interfaith musical salute to Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas and the New Year. Jazz musicians Alex Otey, Nicole Zuraitis, Syreeta Thompson, Lucy Kalantari, Charu Suri, and The Levels were all part of a great cast of performers on the Bruno Walter stage. Women musicians were a large part of the show as well. Jazz bandleader, recording artist Zuraitis is the premiere vocalist of the world-famous Birdland Big Band and for Dan Pugach Nonet, who were Grammy-nominated for their arrangement of Dolly Parton's “Jolene." She assembled an all-star female ensemble to record her project “Generations of Her: Women Songwriters and Lyricists of the Last 100 Years” while working on her sixth album as a leader. Trumpet Lady Thompson is a Billboard Number 1 Album Topper with an upcoming documentary, “Blow Yo Horn��. She kicked off the event by displaying a vigorous demonstration of her instrumental mastery. Uke master Kalantari is a two-time Grammy Award Winner in Children’s music category with a new album, “What Kind of World” coming out with her group The Jazz Cats. Her rousing performance was full of energy and engaged the audience with an energetic sing-along. In addition, multi-award-winning classical pianist and world music artist, Charu Sur performed a challenging composition combining jazz with ragas from her native India. Also on stage were popular New York cabaret and soap opera actress Grace Garland as well as award-winning classical flutist and symphonic performer Joanne Lazzaro, Naumburg International Violin Competition Honorarium Prize winner. Then add featured Broadway violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins, Drama Desk Winner and one of “Broadway’s Best” Rachel York and IDEA Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award winning performer and producer Yocontalie and you have an amazing set. Internationally acclaimed hip-hop, R&B, jazz, Latin, and Afrobeat group Levels combine two cast members of Stomp, an American Idol finalist, and two Italian music virtuosos to yield one energetic and stimulating performance. Then there was Billboard Top 10 American Roots recording artist Smith who brought in an emotional and touching rendition of two songs including “On This Day” and ““Christmas Eve in Times Square USA”. The show’s grand finale brought everyone together as the entire cast on-stage performed a Smith classic “We’ll Stay Together” with lyrics in the program for audience sing-along. All told, the concert displayed an amazing array of talents and good work from Indie Collaborative members. What a way to close out a complicated year.

Kindie Tracks: Lucy Kalantari It’s the Holidays!

A great introduction to the sophisticated, yet sweetly accessible jazz artist Lucy Kalantari, the five track EP It’s the Holidays! makes the perfect stocking stuffer or dreidel game accompaniment, with songs celebrating the season so rich and bright, you might want to put some shades on, and enjoy the sunny smiles her original songwriting brings.

Building with fresh excitement that spills over into each tune, Kalantari’s voice and musical disposition are all befitting of the exclamation mark in the title. Backed by the Jazz Cats, including clarinetist Linus Wyrsch, Larry Cook on upright bass and Rich Kulsar on drums all shining as brightly as their scat inclined vocalist, the whole ensemble thoroughly enjoy themselves. The title track is sprinkled with familiar holiday music phrasing, and the playful My Mommy is a Mummy---a really fun story in a song, including haunting strings, and ghostly Egyptian themed percussion, offers a running start with Halloween, followed by the loving spoonfuls of Grateful for Thanksgiving.

It’s Snowing reminds me of that uncontrollable kid-burst of energy, kept in reserve for when they wake up to the white stuff falling and/or blanketing the ground outside. Slipping and siding right out the door, down the steps, over the hill, or up the block, it is proof positive mother nature never fails to impress, or to inspire a song.

Grammy Awards 2019 : complete list of winners announced

The 61st Grammy Awards 2019 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles. The evening saw artists like Childish Gambino, Lady Gaga, Kacey Musgraves and Brandi Carlile picked up multiple awards in the top categories.

The late Chris Cornell was honored with a posthumous Grammy Awards 2019 as ‘When Bad Does Good’ achieved Best Rock Performance. His two children, Toni and Christopher, accepted the award on his behalf.

Ariana Grande may be boycotting tonight’s festivities, but she was still victorious in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album for her 2018 LP, Sweetener. It marked the pop diva’s first-ever Grammy.

Deadline Looms For The 24th Annual USA Songwriting Competition

Enrollment deadline for the 24th Annual USA Songwriting Competition is fast approaching. Songwriters and Composers vie for a chance to win a top prize of $50,000 worth of cash and merchandise such as music gear. Winning songs will be receiving radio airplay. Songwriters can enter in 15 different song categories such as: Pop, Rock/Alt, Folk, R&B, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Instrumental, etc. USA Songwriting Competition is sponsored by: D'Addario Strings, Godin Guitars, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, New Music Weekly, Loggins Promotion, Airplay Access, Audio-Technica, FL Software, Sonoma Wireworks, DiscMakers, CDBaby, StoryBlocks, School of Rock, Final Mix Software Berklee College of Music and more. CURRENT WINNERS Singer Songwriter David Wilcox won the top award (Overall Grand Prize) as well as Best Folk Song award at the 23rd Annual USA Songwriting Competition. David is now 20 Albums into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans. Considered a 壮ongwriter's songwriter', his lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops, and creative open tunings. Wilcox was a winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk award in 1988, and by 1990 his A&M Records debut had sold over 100,000 copies. Another A&M Records release "Big Horizon" charted on the Billboard 200 Album Charts. His latest album, "The View From the Edge" was released earlier this year, and many people consider it among his finest work to date. "I'm grateful my song was selected winner of the top prize in the USA Songwriting competition. This recognition inspires me to continue the work. I love the process of writing, and this will help me follow through when the next song idea pops into my head. Thanks to the judges, and thank you to everyone at the competition for supporting the art of songwriting," said a very jubilant David Wilcox, who is currently on tour promoting his current album. A dedicated and consummate songwriter, whose work has been covered by KD Lang and others, David often teaches the art songwriting at workshops. The Overall Second Prize of the USA Songwriting Competition went to William Carpenter, Robert Gillies and Art Andranikyan, from the rock group "Ships Have Sailed." The Los Angeles based group won with their song "Let's Just Dance". The Overall Third Prize went to Michael McDaniel, Mike DeCole, J Isaac and Robbie Rob of Minneapolis, MN, who wrote the song "Man 4 Me". NEW GRAMMY WINNER USA Songwriting Competition Honorable Mention winner (2017 Competition) and finalist (2018 Competition) Lucy Kalantari of New York, NY won a Grammy Award on earlier this year for Best Children's Album. Her album All The Sounds by Lucy Kalantari & The Jazz Cats included her five-year-old son Darius Kalantari, who played the cello on the album. ABOUT USA SONGWRITING COMPETITION USA Songwriting Competition has a long history of having winners getting recording and publishing contracts, have gotten recording contracts, getting their songs on film, TV as well as getting cuts with major artists.
