you had to be there to understand the absolute insanity that was the 2016 aftg fandom. fancasts had lucky blue smith the mormon as the twinyards and hayley fucking kiyoko lesbian icon as either allison reynolds or renee walker depending on how they were feeling that day. we harassed the clemson state football team on twitter because their uniforms looked like the foxes. every twenty one pilots song had an edit. every second post was a 'the foxes as vines' and tagged andrew as the toddler with a knife. kevin drank more than humanly possible in every fic. riko moriyama apologists were on the rise. i truly believe we were the reason nora disappeared from the internet.

Do you have any pink genre recs in terms of music? I want to get more into the genre.
-Hypermobile Françoise anon
hello!!! do you have any idea how hard this is for me to answer. i love rambling and being pedantic and going off on tangents. almost as much as i love punk music...
tl;dr i compiled a playlist for you, containing 3 songs from (most of) the bands mentioned below, plus a few extra from miscellanious artists bc 54 is my lucky number. it was hard to choose just 3 from some of my faves but i feel like this is a good introduction. long post to follow <3
instead of simply giving you a list and sending you on your merry way, i am absolutely going to spout off bc thats what i do and ur gonna regret asking. do you think you were gonna get off that easy? you absolute fool. sit ur ass down ur about to get schooled.
disclaimer; this isn't exhaustive. i'm not rattling off every single punk artist that's ever existed. just a few of my favorites.
the clash, the quintessential punk band in my opinion. defined the genre and embodied the political ethos. explored different subgenres througout their expansive discography. they were probably my first introduction to music as a whole since they're my dad's favorite band. i may be biased but i'd definitely say start with the clash. i'd recommend listening to their third album, london calling, first.
the pogues - the folk punk band of all time. NOT folk-punk like some smelly white man with dreadlocks screaming over poorly-tuned guitar. you'll know exactly what i mean when you hear it. they have a unique sound that just can't be replicated. and shane macgowan is actually such a beautiful person. their lyrics are also politically tinged, kinda gritty and edgy (i.e. gratuitous slurs) so not for senstive ears.
(i actually have a playlist of my fave pogues/shane macgowan songs)
the cure, in my opinion, invented goth or at least popularized it. their earlier stuff had more of a punk sound but every one of their albums is a perfect 10 to me. they're one of my favorite bands of all time and i could go on about them for hours so i'll leave it there. joy division, also more goth/post-punk but i love them, i have one of their album covers tattooed on my forearm lmao 19 year old decisions. no regrets (i also love the smiths, but they're not really punk punk.)
before you ask, no sex pistols!!! don't get me started on how much i hate the sex pistols i will throw up! god they suck. to me at least.
a lot of punks also listen to ska - no, not that kind of ska. 70/80s ska that originated from rocksteady/reggae. some of my faves in that arena being madness, the specials, bad manners, and the beat.
and as for across the pond - american punk artists.
johnny cash. no, seriously. man was punk before punk was defined.
my favorite band is probably social distortion. they're pretty different than those mentioned above, owing to their unmistakable americana sound and aesthetic. to me they're the quintessential rockabilly revival band, heavily influenced by country and blues. great guitar licks. think wistful and reckless all at once.
their frontman mike ness is an outrageously gorgeous man. he has two solo albums that absolutely slap. the happiest day of my life was seeing them live a couple years ago and he winked right at me - i promise i'm not delusional i swear he really did. ok i digress.
dead kennedys - hilarious lyrics and sick ass bass lines, very political and generally pretty iconic. one of my dad's faves. the cramps and the misfits. two bands overlapping goth + punk + psychobilly. pioneers of a campy subgenre known as horror-punk. i also really like danzig, the misfits frontman's solo career.
the velvet underground/lou reed - great example of american proto-punk. very NYC vibes. the pixies are a more grungy, later punk band. one of my mommy's favorites <3 i would unironically name my child velouria. definitely iconic but i find them overplayed sometimes, as in you've probably heard them at the grocery store.
this barely scratches the surface btw but i think that about covers it for today. sorry if i bored you to death pls come back and keep me company. peace and love on planet mpregfrance <3

hi again!! its 1st time cannibal the musical watcher again- i might start signing my asks or somethin cus i keep wanting to talk but like you're always sharing such obscure random stuff.. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE THING YOU'VE DISCOVERED OR FOUND?? specific quote of an interview or a particular photo you've found ???
hiii anon lovely to see you back! feel free to tag yourself if you prefer that way, but either way you're much appreciated 🥰
I have so much stuff I found (I'd say it more like... was lucky to run into while researching 😵‍💫) that I love, but to name a few...
"My lovely wife Matt Stone" aka Trey's BOM speech from Feb 25 2013 at the first west end preview. How I found this: So, sometimes when I'm bored I'll pick a random mattrey blog that's been active for a long time, open an old post from their archive, see if there's old inactive mattrey blogs in the notes, and look through their archive to see if there's any posts I could make resurface that had stopped circulating, right? The funny thing is I'll go on reblog sprees, so I actually hadn't listened to the audio when I reblogged it. I was only informed of what it said when I saw others freak out about it.
Daily Show with Craig Kilborn. Why it's my fav? Well, aside from being adorable and iconic, it landed my youtube channel in the lost media wiki! How I found it is actually quite easy, when you look up fansites on the web archive you can do specific search for the files the web archive has saved from it. Turns out sometimes quicktime files work! Four parts were in canniballovers and one in dtisfu if I remember correctly, I just edited them together and posted it. Still wish someone could find it in better quality though. 😔
I'm gonna list a bunch of pictures now... because there's many. 😭 But my absolute N1 is probably the Halloween Robert Smith Trey picture. How I found it is simple, just looking up random words on facebook. Probably "trey parker", nothing special. This and this from the Ron Jeremy website on the web archive, though I think maybe the second one had already been circulating I'm not exactly sure. Showgirl Halloween Trey. The kiss pictures. Pink haired Trey!! This NATPE (?) picture. These older Trey pics where he's serving absolute cunt. This Lapdance/Sundance (?) pic. And these too. This reverse cap one altho this was from twitter I don't think I was the first to come across it tbh. These three from the "A Million Laughs" fb page... Bowl hat... Trey with the blue umbrella full pic... tho I wouldn't say I "found it" only that I got to it first the day it was posted... Trey in the matching christmas pajama from 2018... I'm gonna stop but my heart is pretty big and I like all pics...
These measly 7 secs of SDCC footage only because of the first mattrey pic included because that pose from Trey is everythinggg.
This oscars clip because Trey does such a graceful hair flip 😭
Le Petit Package pics though all I did was waltz into the lost media thread and see they had been posted...
The forbidden mattrey slides which we may never see... these were all from worthpoint, which is just a website that archives past ebay bids.
Annual Diversity Awards for the Trey serve ofc.
And finally, I'm very partial to "Matt's a cock".
As to how I come across anything... it's lots of free time. Like I'm talking hours daily just picking a random lead and following it. It may be a website you think hasn't been thoroughly searched (I've tried fb, ig, twitter, worthpoint, ebay, wordpress, tripod, weebly, various fansites on webarchive, footage.net, bilibili/baidu, vimeo, dailymotion, flickr, a load of sketchy other websites I don't remember anymore... basically trey parker has brought me to places I wouldn't go with a gun...) a combination of words, a new search engine that may give u different results (I've tried the ones listed in the lost media wiki guide, my favorite is startpage). Using targeted searching like "word" or site:x "word" or "word combo" before:year, basically trying to make google your bitch. I also use gettyimages like a visual wiki of events Trey's been to+the date, it's quite useful... ik you didn't ask the "how" part but aaaa I like talking about it 😭 I have a lot of fun. Even though sometimes I just come up empty handed even after hours of research. More often than not tbh. Also I'm an obsessed weirdo who checks the words "trey parker" daily on twitter, tumblr, ig, fb, yt, web archive and ebay.
And also the concept of finding is weird because it has happened to me that I thought I had found something and then it actually had been circulating already, so I tried really hard to answer you by only listing stuff I was fairly sure hadn't been circulating before I got to it, but I mean... it doesn't really matter! I'm here to serve, I just like sharing whatever stuff I run into, it'll happen that it's new to me but it really isn't. 😵‍💫 I try...
Tumblr media
I like this too also but I didn't find it, it was pretty available already fjdkg you know Jack Shih was at that dodgeball event?
Tumblr media
Favorite funfact that I haven't had a chance to share yet, so now you know!

Girl Icons of Halloween Season 2024
This Halloween I had to work and had hoped to see ladies coming in wearing costumes that I could potentially photograph. Unfortunately, everyone who came in was not dressed up ( boring luxury store ). I then attended a Halloween party in which I hoped I would find some costumes to photograph but it ended up being a small group of mostly men ( Halloween Horror Story ). Because I really missed my opportunities to go out an take pictures, I am instead going to analyze costumes I saw through social media.
1. Do you notice key themes for girl iconography this Halloween season?
I found a major theme this Halloween to be women dressing up as pop stars and female musicians. There was a lot of Sabrina Carpenter, Ice Spice, Cher, Charli XCX and my personal fave Lady Gaga. I got my roommates permission to show her incredible Lady Gaga costume photographed below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. What pop cultural references, if any, are recurring?
My favorite reoccurring pop culture reference I saw this year was all of the Nara and Lucky Blue Smith costumes. I thought this was a hilarious idea, particularly the tiktok reenactments of the Crumble cookie video. I also saw a lot of Princess Diana costumes, most notably from super model Elsa Hosk, photo below. But again I think the pop icons took the cake for costume inspo this year.

3. How does the costuming, and imagery compare to your teenage experiences of Halloween?
The costuming and imagery of Halloween 2024 compared to when I was a teen feels much much much more inspired by social media than when I was a teen. In my teen years i feel like we all kept it pretty basic, witch, cat, vampire, and zombie vibes. I feel like in 2024 we are seeing much more niche costumes that are relevant to trendy social media thing. An awesome example of this is a girl who dressed up as a zombified Rhode lip gloss.
While I think that its great that social media has inspired more of these niche costumes ( ie Nara Smith or a bloody Rhode lip gloss ). Part of me is really grateful that when I was a teen Halloween was a bit more simple. Halloween in 2024 to me feels a bit more 'performative' for a social media audience.
Tumblr media
Because I wasn't able to photograph any strangers and cant speak to the atmosphere around those photos, I will describe the atmosphere on my walk to the Halloween party I attended. Absolutely dead! No pun intended, it really seemed like by the time actual Halloween rolled around everyone was worn out from the weekend before and didn't come out. The streets were quiet in my area! Even my friend who attended the party with me only put on a pair of devil horns and t shirt, haha. Our photo is below.

AFLW Pride Round guernseys unveiled, and they’re fantastic!
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/aflw-pride-round-guernsey/
AFLW Pride Round guernseys unveiled, and they’re fantastic!
Colourful pride and inclusion lead the way as we head into the AFLW Pride Round.
Week seven of the AFLW season sees all 18 clubs celebrate their annual Pride Round.
Pride, respect, love and inclusion are the themes the AFLW clubs are celebrating during this year’s Pride Round.
Teams celebrate and support the diversity and inclusion of LGBTQI+ communities in AFL, both on and off the field.
All 18 teams will don a specially designed pride-themed guernsey as they take to the field this weekend.
youtube
Everyone is welcome at the AFL.
Giants co-captain Kat Smith designed the team’s guernsey for their match against Adelaide at Henson Park.
And it has a special connection for the players.
“I think it’s really unique to the whole competition, having a different pride game for their home games.” Kat told us.
“Pride Round is my favourite game. I’ve been a part of the rainbow community since I was 12 years old.”
“It’s always had a special place in my heart. AFL is a place where everyone is welcome.”
Kat admits designing the guernsey was no small feet but very important to her.
“All the different colours of the pride flag are there, so no matter where you identify, you hopefully see yourself there.”
“A key feature was the ‘Never Surrender’ strip on the charcoal guernsey.”
“The rainbow community never surrenders and continues to push for equality and acceptance, and we wanted to highlight that.”
There are five words on the back of the GIANTS guernsey: all-embracing, confidence, togetherness, inclusivity and love.
Kat created these with two of her teammates, who are allies.
“I have no design ability at all. So I had a few conversations and got some ideas.”
“I then sent it through to the team, and they helped put it all together.”
The Western Bulldogs guernsey was designed by the members playing group and features the colours of the transgender flag.
The inaugural Pride Game was established by the Bulldogs and Carlton in 2018.
The Bulldogs, who play Essendon on Friday night, have included trans colours in their designs since 2022.
Based on the club’s white clash guernsey, it has gender-identity symbols featured across the pink and blue hoops in the centre.
These were included to represent the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Bulldogs Pride Supporter group is not only excited for this year’s match on Friday but is walking with pride to the match, and you can join them.
You can join them at the western end of the car park from 5 pm.
The group will start to walk half an hour later before the opening proceedings.
Who’s pride guernsey is your fav?
The Roos design was led by former player Ailish Considine, celebrating love and unity.
It features the royal blue stripes and iconic Bounding Roo, lined with the colours of the Progressive Pride flag.
With a heart in the centre of the Roo and the message ‘Love Unites’ inscribed at the bottom of the guernsey.
Port Adelaide’s Pride Guernsey is designed by players Abbey Dowrick and Hannah Ewings.
“It was all pretty foreign for me. Lucky. I had nothing to do with the drawings. I’m horrible when it comes to being an artist”
“I’m just glad that what we thought of came to life,” Ewings said.
Named the Power of Pride, the design represents all who make up the Port Adelaide community.
“I really love the club’s tri-bolt guernsey design, so I wanted us to try to replicate something like that with the lightning bolt but then make it our own as well.”

A post shared by Fremantle Dockers AFLW (@freodockersaflw)
“AFLW is all about equality and inclusiveness and it was important to us to incorporate those and some other important words in our design.”
“For me, the biggest thing is just accepting who you are and loving who you are.”
“The Pride Round is always such a special week to see how many people get out in all sorts of colours.”
“You can feel the joy around the football community when everyone gets around each other and loves love.”
St Kilda has an interlocking rainbow pattern that celebrates diversity and acceptance.
This year’s design will be the fourth Pride guernsey the Saints have worn in the AFLW competition.
The Sydney Swans couldn’t wait to celebrate their pride, wearing them this weekend at Henson Park against the Cats.
The Hawks guernsey not only features the rainbow hawk front and centre but also the Hawks Pride logo, highlighting the important work of their supporter group.
With only a few days left before this year’s AFLW Pride Round there are still a few more guernsey designs to be unveiled.
But we can’t wait to see them all shine with pride.

The Rise of Men’s Fashion Models
Tumblr media
Historical Perspective: From the Shadows to the Spotlight
In the early years of the fashion industry, male models were largely overshadowed by their female counterparts. However, the late 20th century marked the beginning of a significant shift. Fashion houses like Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein began to champion male models, using them to personify the elegance, masculinity, and style of their brands.
Supermodels and the Global Stage Men’s Fashion Models
The 1990s saw the rise of the male supermodel. Names like David Gandy, Tyson Beckford, and Mark Vanderloo became household names, gracing the covers of high-profile magazines and representing prestigious fashion brands. These men became the face of luxury, power, and style, setting a new standard for what it means to be a fashion model.
Different Types of Men’s Fashion Models
High Fashion Models
High-fashion male models represent luxury brands and couture designers on runways and in editorials. They often work for top designers during Fashion Week events in cities like Paris, Milan, and New York. High-fashion models tend to have a distinctive look, often described as angular, striking, and artistic, fitting into the avant-garde style of the industry.
Commercial Men’s Fashion Models
Unlike high-fashion models, commercial male models are more relatable and cater to everyday products and services. Their looks are more accessible and typically align with mainstream beauty standards. You will find commercial male models in advertising campaigns, catalog work, and commercials, representing products ranging from clothing to lifestyle brands.
Fitness Models
Fitness models have become increasingly popular as athleisure and fitness culture dominate modern lifestyles. These men are toned, and muscular, and typically promote fitness gear, supplements, or activewear. With the rise of social media platforms like Instagram, many fitness models have built enormous followings, becoming influencers in their own right.
Influencers and Social Media Models
Today, social media plays a critical role in the fashion industry. Many men who may not be traditional runway models have found their niche online, thanks to platforms like Instagram and TikTok. These social media models often collaborate with fashion brands for sponsored posts, showcasing the latest trends in streetwear, luxury, and lifestyle fashion.
How Men’s Fashion Models Influence Trends
Tumblr media
Runway Shows and Global Trends
The runway is where fashion trends are born. Male models are essential in showcasing how designs translate from concept to reality, wearing some of the most anticipated collections from top designers. Their presence in Fashion Week serves as a direct conduit between designers and consumers, influencing what men around the world will want to wear in the coming seasons.

Rudy Van Gelder: November 2, 1924, Jersey City, NJ - August 25, 2016, Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Rudy Van Gelder: Nov. 2, 1924, Jersey City, NJ - Aug. 25, 2016, Englewood Cliffs, NJ
The Art of Sound Deceased a few hundred meters from his birthplace, Rudy Van Gelder, in a 56-year career, almost all of which in his own studio, will have recorded a good part of the gratin of jazz, but also a lot of jazz musicians, of all notoriety, work which, with hindsight, restores the depth and essence of jazz. The quality of its recordings has done justice to this particular memory of prolific jazz in a golden age where hundreds of exceptional artists in jazz alone, known or less known, adored or less lucky. But all of them had the chance to meet Rudy Van Gelder who gave their art all his attention and know-how with an equal demand for perfection. The particularity of Rudy Van Gelder is that he did not need to move, except for some live recordings, its qualities unanimously appreciated have attracted in its nets, that is to say its studio made to measure, countless numbers of jazz musicians from talent, elders, contemporaries or later generations. The wizard of his mark on the history of jazz from the 1950s to today, not that he recorded them all, because jazz produced thousands of artists and masterpieces, including saved in other studios or on other stages, but he contributed greatly to raise the standards of recording, of which everyone and everywhere has benefited.
Tumblr media
In 27 kilometers, from his parents' living room which he transformed into a studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, at his iconic Englewood studio Cliffs, still in New Jersey, Rudy became a jazz icon alongside the greatest figures he recorded: Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Mingus, Sonny Clark, Lee Morgan, Eric Dolphy, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Donald Byrd, Grant Green, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Johnny Hodges, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Lou Donaldson, Cannonball Adderley… and we forget a lot, inevitably, the list is endless of great jazz artists, elders, contemporaries or cadets of Rudy Van Gelder, who passed through his studio. Her trademark is engraved in the wax of the long discs play (LP) whose appearance in the early 1950s allowed more long recordings and thus frees musicians from the constraints of a reduced timing. If his first officially recognized recording is a classical music session, almost all of his work will be devoted to jazz. Over 3000 albums and over 20000 recordings punctuate his long career.
Tumblr media
Sorting remains impossible to do if we wanted to isolate exceptional works, so much did he know to provide musicians with a framework and collaboration that is always exceptional, allowing everyone to express themselves in the best conditions, and giving a perfect restitution of the qualities of each one. It was thus the extension of hundreds of orchestras, sometimes even in a way a full member, as responsible as the others for the success of these masterpieces. Some names, among the musicians, can be isolated, as of course John Coltrane (near of 70 recordings), because apart from the period at the Atlantic, Rudy Van Gelder held the controls of most of his recordings, at Prestige, Blue Note and Impulse!, even sometimes live (Vanguard and Birdland). But Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Smith, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Grant Green, are also indebted to him for a exceptional work, and more broadly, the sound of independent labels of the fifties and sixties, in the forefront of which, Prestige, Blue Note and Impulse! Her career did not stop there, as you will see below, but Rudy Van Gelder is certainly a key man of the 1950s-1960s for jazz and phonographic publishing in general, and labels freelancers in particular. It is not innocent that after these three labels that we mentioned, in the recent period, HighNote, one of the last high-quality independents in jazz have done so often call on his talent. Without being THE sound of jazz, Rudy Van Gelder is certainly one of the most beautiful sounds, one of the best artisans.
Tumblr media
During the interview he gave to Jazz Hot in 1992, he spoke of more than 20,000 recordings on which he would have collaborated (mastering, editing, supervision etc.). It must be said that his work crosses the great movements of jazz contemporary. At the same time that he puts himself at their service, he benefits from the exceptional dimension of the creators of jazz, and many, the most of them, whatever their instruments and the vagaries of their careers, are. The assertion of new independent labels in the post-Second World War, the appearance of bold and talented independent producers (Norman Granz, Bob Weinstock, Orrin Keepnews, Lester Koenig, Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun, the Chess Brothers, etc.) contribute to energizing a multiplicity of substantial catalogs whose goals combine creativity and profitability, allowing musicians, leaders and accompanists to benefit from additional income. It is also the birth of an age of disc gold – not support for success or distribution, as at the age of the 78 rpm, not commercial or promotional support as it became so later – but from the record "work of art", combining excellence at all levels: creators, music, production, photography, graphics, shaping, pressing and of course perfection sound. Even if these recordings sometimes remain from a report financially limited, they are for some musicians, becoming accustomed to studios, the necessary complement to a professional life based on concerts in clubs and tours not always remunerative. Economic successes reinvested in production allow audacity elsewhere and the discovery of new musicians. The producers are art lovers and not businessmen, even if they know how to manage. Rudy Van Gelder has collaborated with many producers, but it is with the duo of Blue Note, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, with Bob Weinstock of Prestige label and with the Impulse! label, Creed Taylor then Bob Thiele, that he creates his notoriety than his legend, allowing him to create his own studio and to attract the best of the jazz world. The founders and producers of Blue Note, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, perfectionists in their production, are looking for an "elegant" sound that is faithful to the height of their requirements and the exceptional music of which they are The promoters. Rudy Van Gelder, refined, precise and of a no less great perfectionism, will constitute an ideal complement for creating the label's enduring and legendary aesthetic. Blue productions Note by Alfred Lion, with Rudy Van Gelder on sound, Francis Wolff on photography, Reid Miles, Paul Bacon, Andy Warhol, David Stone Martin the graphic design, and cover texts of critics of jazz well documented on the discographic level, constitute a peak of the editorial art of the record, of jazz in particular because very innovator. This is thanks to the saxophonist Gill Mellé who brings four recorded titles by Rudy Van Gelder that he would like to see published by Blue Note that Alfred Lion discovers Rudy Van Gelder to whom he will remain faithful, due to particular of truth, of the presence of sound. It should be noted that for the first time a label pays for the rehearsals of the musicians, their thus making it possible to prepare the recordings. The cohesion of groups and their ability to record in few takes ensure the label an undeniable artistic quality which places it at the top of the labels independent, and constitutes an exceptional artistic catalog without constantly re-exploited, in all forms, in facsimile of the original, compilations, complete, with or without bonuses, i.e. the other takes ( alternate Take ), with previously unreleased tracks. When Alfred Lion says: “Rudy really knows about it, he's a sensitive being. He is not one of those types who are content to watch the hand on the dial.” , Rudy responds: "Alfred Lion knew exactly what he wanted and took the time to get it." We could say almost as much for the Prestige productions of Bob Weinstock with Rudy Van Gelder, who have done a lot for jazz, his transmission, its independence and its profitability, as evidenced by the many reissues still today of these productions of that time. The early works of Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, as a leader, in particular, testify to the intense work of Rudy Van Gelder at Hackensack. Impulse!, the John Coltrane "locomotive", with whom Rudy Van Gelder maintained an exceptionally dense professional and friendly relationship, is finally the last part of this triptych that Rudy Van Gelder erects on the Art of Sound in Jazz . Creed Taylor then Bob Thiele from the beginning of the sixties impose a new aesthetic line in Jazz. It is moreover, at the express request of John Coltrane, that Rudy Van Gelder becomes the true accomplice of the musical work of the great artist. This same Creed Taylor will call on Rudy again to his new label CTI ( Creed Taylor Inc. ) created in 1967 within A&M Records, and became independent in 1970. We can still cite Michael Cuscuna among the talented producers who are linked to Rudy Van Gelder.

Of 1952 to the end of the 1970s, Rudy Van Gelder produced a very large number of studio recordings from these labels. We are almost "disturbed" sometimes when you can't find the few lines on the back of the record that indicate that the record was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at Hackensack or Englewood Cliffs, NJ. It's like seeing the credits of a film by Federico Fellini without the editing by Ruggero Mastroianni. Despite his focus on jazz, Rudy Van Gelder's notoriety goes far beyond this framework, because he has become the reference. He defends an absolute of recording, a form of rigorous professional honesty which confers on his work a separate status, that of a pioneer and at the same time an ideal of the record. Rudy Van Gelder will work regularly for other labels (Verve, Vox, etc.). Since 1999, he has ensured the remastering of many albums that have become classics for the market of the CD which develops, but he regrets that the majority is done without his opinion, not even receiving a copy on this new medium. He likes to remember that the majority of producers did not even give him a copy of the reissued LP or CD; he had to buy them...

The Van Gelder Recording Studio, located exactly at 445 Sylvan Avenue, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, opened in July 1959, and the first official session will be devoted to Ike Quebec, the excellent tenor and advice from Blue Note, for a single.   Since the little genius who experimented with a lot of flair in his parents' living room in Hackensack, NJ, later turned into a studio for recording sessions, to his mysterious studio of Englewood Cliffs, the enigmatic Rudy Van Gelder has come a long way of excellence. He wanted to become a sound engineer in the 1940s. This young jazz lover roams the clubs and listens to the many radio broadcasts while being interested in sound and its reproduction. He made his very first recordings in his family home from New Jersey, where independent New York musicians come from quickly because it is close to the Big Apple. Its prices are unbeatable. His notoriety grew within the small community musical. To afford the specific equipment he wants, he continues his profession of ophthalmologist and is interested in a new generation microphones, amplifiers, engraving technique. He will use in particular the German Neumann U47 microphones, which allow him to capture and restore the essence of instruments and musicians. "In that time, including until the 1950s, the quality of equipment and that of the discs themselves were completely incapable of rendering what the musicians were playing on stage. (…) I had to experiment to find the best way to arrange musicians and microphones so that the sound is the warmest and most as realistic as possible., he pointed out. It should be noted that when Rudy Van Gelder begins to recording professionally at the dawn of the 1950s, the band magnetic just appeared in the studios, and the microgroove album quickly became the dominant format in jazz. Both technologies revolutionize jazz. At the same time, broadcasting and listening are progressing on countless commercial radio stations. The quality of reproduction equipment (chains, stereo phony, etc.) and the request of recordings developed in a period when jazz itself enjoys a growing reputation.

Rudy invents its own techniques to reproduce intimacy and depth, the depth of jazz recorded first in his living room then in the studio. He wants to reproduce on vinyl the sound he hears. He thus stands out from other studio technicians of the time who behind their glass just makes sure the microphones are plugged in, that their machines are running and that the level is not saturated. A true sound adventurer, he imagines and tests various solutions for placement of microphones, types of microphones, windshields that envelop, acoustics… in short, tricks and principles that he will often keep secrets. Very professional and fussy, he makes sure also the quality of the cables, their route, their connection. Closed, he does not hesitate to reprimand the musicians if they allow themselves to touch or move the microphones, but its apparent eccentricity and its rigor are accepted. He became a character in jazz, too respected and revered by musicians as are the great artists of jazz themselves. “During his career and through his many recordings for major labels, Rudy became an idol for worldwide listeners and musicians. An album produced by Rudy seems rich in an organic, intimate way, as if all the musicians had recorded in his cozy little living room with leather armchairs. None of the musicians seem distant or lower, although the leaders are quite distinct. Like Rudy told me during my visit in 2012 to his home and studio, where he had settled with his wife in 1959, he was constantly striving for a natural, realistic sound.” Marc Myers - JazzWax His only notable deviations from jazz will be for the Prestige Label International, where he records music called "folk" at the time, "world music" later. We find albums of the guitarist Spanish Fernando Sirvent, Flamenco Fantanstico , those of folksinger Tossi Aaaron, Tossi Sings Folksong and Ballads or even Los Indians Taba-Jarias … In the field of classical music, he signs a good number of albums, including several by pianist Guiomar Novaes for the Vox label or another A Fantastic Symphony by Berlioz in 1959. More regularly, he records on the Prestige Bluesville label big names in classic blues such as Blind Gary Davis, Memphis Slim or even Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Touched by bossa nova, he also puts at the service of Astrud Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Walter Wanderley. HAS apart from a few other deviations in the soul, (Thornel Schwartz, Ester Phillips), rare poetic albums, his career is totally anchored in his favorite art, jazz. A priori little croaking for French musicians: André Hodeir in 1957 for the albums André Hodeir and the Jazz Group of Paris-The Paris Scene and American Jazzmen Play Andre Hodeir's Essais published by Savoy, the pianist Michel Sardaby for "Gail" and "Going Places” on the Japanese label Mantra in 1990. Rarer, we find Georges Arvanitas behind Yusef Lateef at Impulse! label side French, we note at Dreyfus Jazz an album by Steve Grossman and Cedar Walton Trio in 1993 and a box set (4 CDs) dedicated to Jazz Ladies singers . On the remastering side, he will take care of the Kenny Clarke-Francis Boland and Company album The Golden Eight published in 1961 by Music Matters and reappeared on Blue Note in 2015. Beyond of the labels already mentioned, he collaborates with around fifty majors, independent labels including in chronological and alphabetical order: Bethlehem, Regent, United Artists, Signal Records, Colpix, Moodsville, New Jazz, Atlantic, Mercury, Fantasy, Philips, East Bound Records, Amosaya, Uptown Records, Fontana, Criss Cross, Enja, GRP, Kudu, Elektra, ABC Records, Status Records, Delmark, Gatemouth, EMI, Flying Dutchman, Strateside, Turnabout, Muse Records, Milestones, Concord… From 1969, the recordings become more rare, and Rudy devotes to the reappearance of complete albums, integrals, the edition unreleased tracks, compilations. He dips into his drawers and stocks untapped record companies. He revisits most of the artists majors that it has hosted and completes proofreading with its expertise, more or less commercial catalog funds. In a concert of unanimous praise, only Charles Mingus challenged the sound and mixes by Rudy Van Gelder to offer his own "Sound of Jazz”… Rudy Van Gelder, a great jazz lover and actor of so many recording sessions with legendary musicians, admitted that it was sometimes difficult for him not to give his opinion on recorded music, but as a professional, he adds: “Sometimes, I have a lot of trouble holding myself back. However, that is not my role, because I am neither a musician nor a producer. Of course, I have sometimes expressed an opinion when asked, but people come to see me in the first place for the sound and not to collect an opinion on the music. His moment of choice in such a career was, he said, the version of "Lush Life" recorded by Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane: "There was such emotion, such sadness too, reinforced today by the fact that they both left us… And then, that sound!” Read the full article

My 2023 in retrospect...
Well, that year is almost over. Here's my story of 2023.
This year marked the 30th Anniversary of my time at the Surrey Downs Child Care Centre which I didn't like a little at first as I felt like a prisoner but I soon got the hang of it later. Also, my first video game, 'Super Mario All-Stars' for the SNES hit store shelves 30 years ago too but didn't get it until Christmas a year later at that time.
In January, I went to the St Kilda Mangrove Boardwalk for the first time in many years. It looked a bit different compared with last time I looked.
In February, I got a Lightburn Zeta coffee mug and saw a show at the Garden Of Unearthly Delights all by myself for the first time in my life! Then later, I saw Luke Million perform music from his first album 'Gina The Synth Cat' on his handy keytar! Then at the end, I got lucky and managed to grab one of his drumsticks! From a shop in Chinatown, I bought a Pikachu-design bathroom spout extension which slides onto most horizontal spouts!
In March, I got my Knight Rider Historians tee-shirt showing the GMC Prime Mover & Trailer which is now currently being restored. Went to the new TK-Maxx store at Churchill Centre in Kilburn and tried both 'Bard' & 'Barbarian' burgers from Carl's Jr who have teamed up with the board game based film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Theives. After a remarkable 25 Years, Ash Ketchum's quest to become a true Pokemon Master came to an epic conclusion with the callback mini-series, 'Aim To Be A Master'. He and Pikachu came a long, long way together through the low times and the high. We still saluted him, celebrated him and praised him like we should.
In April, I went to a LEGO exhibit at the Museum Of Adelaide, then to a car show at Echunga Oval and then to an Easter carnival on Ridley Reserve. Bought the LEGO Icons 'Land Rover Defender 110' which is considered to be my best one for 2023 with working suspension, steering and the ability to tow! I even built a trailer to go with it!
In May, I took a time-lapse video of a Wisdom 'Sizzler' ride being setup for the first time in my life! Built a LEGO model of the gas heater we used to have in the lounge room until 2007. Went on a few tram rides at the St Kilda Tramway Museum.
In June, went to the Model Railway Exhibition in Angle Park. Then went on a few buses during a 'Farewell Tour' of the MAN NL202 fleet.
In July, I put 'Richard Stevens Hire' decals on my blue LEGO trailer as a nod to the days before Kennards came to South Australia! The old streetlights on our street were upgraded to LED. Saw the 'Barbie' movie at Hoyts. Brixpo was way better than ever, so was AVCon!
In August, The St Kilda Tramway Museum had a showcase of old buses. Then I went to the Gawler Show.
In September, Went to the Royal Adelaide Show and saw a small ex-John Martins semi trailer which was owned by one of the amusement companies. The supposed Masters Home Improvement store in Noarlunga is now being converted to Bunnings after sitting unused for quite some time. My grandmother Ann Smith turned 90 and we celebrated her birthday at the main hall in her aged care village. Took a hike in Cobbler Creek Recreation Park and I was exceptionally lucky to avoid getting bitten by a snake which could've cut my life short. Then I finally advanced onto my full driver's license and had a beer at the Old Spot Hotel in commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of my first 'legal drink'.
In October, The former house of 'The Owens' (i.e. my mother's parents) was put up for sale. Had a discussion with an NDIS employee at the Disabilty, Ageing & Lifestyle Expo at the showgrounds. Then for the first time in almost 13 years, looked around in the Roseworthy Agricultural Museum and went on some rides at the Roseworthy Miniature Railway Club! Went to the Tonsley Hotel in Clovelly Park to have a meal before it closed its doors to be redeveloped for the T2D Infrastructure Project. The former Red Rooster building at Harbor Town in West Beach was finally demolished after TEN YEARS! Then I went to the National Motor Museum for the 'Bay To Birdwood' car showcase!
In November, Went to the first ever Tiny Homes Expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Ingle Farm Shopping Centre changed its name to Ingle Farm Plaza and the old 'wind pump' signboards had to be removed and replaced with generic rectangular ones. Went to the Skye Lookout for a lovely view of the city and its surroundings. Bought the new Jazwares 'Train & Play Deluxe Pikachu' from Toyworld! I just couldn't resist it.
In December, I went to the new entertainment complex in the former Harris Scarfe floors of Rundle Place. Received my 1/43 Scale Knight Rider FLAG Rig from a seller in Portugal but was in a few pieces so I had to gorilla-glue them back on. Also did a repair to a LEGO Fabuland plane set as the left-side exhaust pipe was in two pieces when I bought it from a shop in Cowell. Went on Adelaide's first ever BEB (Battery-Electric Bus) on Route 99C for the first time in my life! For Christmas, I got the new LEGO Chevrolet Corvette!
