My Plus Fashion: Chikankari Kurti for Different Occasions
Tumblr media
Chikankari, a complex and excellent form of embroidery that hails from Lucknow, is a timeless art that has captivated the hearts of fashion enthusiasts for centuries. Among the most popular chikankari creations are the chikankari kurti, known for their elegance and versatility. Whether you're dressing up for a formal event, a casual outing, or a festive celebration, there's a chikankari Kurti for every occasion. Let's explore how you can style these beautiful kurtis for different events.
1- Office Wear
For a sophisticated yet comfortable office look, a light-colored Lucknowi chikankari kurti paired with tailored pants or palazzos is an excellent choice. Opt for subtle shades like pastels or classic whites, which are both professional and stylish. The delicate embroidery of the Lucknowi chikankari adds a touch of elegance without being too overpowering. Complete the look with minimal jewelry and a pair of comfortable flats or block heels.
2- Casual Outings
When it comes to casual outings, a Lucknowi chikankari kurti can be your perfect attire. Choose a kurti in a vibrant color or with playful patterns to add a fun element to your outfit. Pair it with jeans or leggings for a relaxed yet chic look. A short chikankari kurti with intricate designs can also be paired with denim shorts for a fusion look that's perfect for a day out with friends. Add some jewelry and a pair of juttis or sandals to finish off the ensemble.
3- Festive Celebrations
Festivals are the perfect time to showcase the rich heritage of Lucknowi Chikankari. For such occasions, opt for a heavily embroidered chikankari kurti in rich hues like royal blue, deep red, or emerald green. Pair it with a matching or contrasting churidar and a dupatta to create a traditional look that stands out. Accessorize with statement jewelry and a pair of adorn heels to add a touch of glamour.
4- Weddings and Formal Events
Chikankari Kurtis can also be an excellent choice for weddings and formal events. For a wedding, choose a long Chikankari Kurti with intricate embroidery, sequins, and beadwork. Pair it with a lehenga skirt or palazzo pants to create an elegant and sophisticated ensemble. A Lucknowi chikankari kurti in silk or georgette fabric can elevate your style, making you look both graceful and fashionable.
5- Evening Parties
For evening parties, a Chikankari Kurti in darker shades like black, navy, or maroon can make a striking statement. Opt for a kurti with minimal yet elegant embroidery for a classy look. Pair it with slim-fit pants or a long skirt and accessorize with a delicate jewelry.
6- Ethnic Day at College
College ethnic days are a great opportunity to flaunt your traditional wear. A bright and colorful Lucknowi chikankari kurti paired with a Patiala salwar or a long skirt can make you stand out. Choose a kurti with vibrant embroidery and pair it with traditional accessories like bangles, jhumkas, and mojris. This look is not only comfortable but also makes a fashion sense.

Chikankari Kurtis: A Journey Through Artistry and Tradition
Tumblr media
Introduction
India is a land of diverse cultures, traditions, and artistic expressions. One such embodiment of exquisite artistry is Chikankari, an ancient embroidery technique that originated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Chikankari is a delicate and intricate form of hand embroidery that adorns various fabrics, but it finds its most graceful expression in the ethereal Chikankari Kurtis. In this blog, we embark on a captivating journey through the artistry and tradition of Chikankari Kurti, exploring its history, craftsmanship, significance, and its timeless appeal in the world of fashion.

Historical Roots of Chikankari
Chikankari traces its origins back to the Mughal era, dating as far back as the 3rd century BC. Legend has it that the technique was introduced by the great Empress Noor Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir. The exquisite craft gained prominence during the reign of the Nawabs of Awadh, who were known for their patronage of arts and culture. The intricate patterns and delicate stitches of Chikankari were highly valued by the nobility, making it an integral part of royal attire.
The Craftsmanship Behind Chikankari
Chikankari is a labor-intensive and time-honored craft, passed down through generations of skilled artisans. The process begins with the design, which is traced onto the fabric by expert craftsmen. Traditional designs include motifs like flowers, paisleys, and vines, reflecting the beauty of nature.
The embroidery is done using a fine needle and threads, which are drawn through the fabric to create delicate patterns. Different stitches, such as the shadow work, the jaali stitch, and the keel kangan, are employed to achieve varying degrees of transparency and intricacy. Each stitch requires precision and finesse, making every Chikankari short kurti or Chikankari long Kurti a unique piece of art.
Types of Chikankari Kurtis
Chikankari Kurtis come in a wide range of styles, catering to diverse tastes and occasions. Some popular types include:
Anarkali Chikankari Kurtis: These flowing, floor-length Kurtis are a symbol of elegance and grace. They are often adorned with intricate Chikankari embroidery around the neckline, hemline, and sleeves, making them perfect for formal events and celebrations.
Straight-cut Chikankari Kurtis: These Kurtis feature a simple, straight silhouette, ideal for casual and everyday wear. The Chikankari embroidery on the yoke or along the front adds a touch of sophistication to the outfit.
A-line Chikankari Kurtis: Flattering on most body types, A-line Kurtis have a fitted bodice that gradually flares out towards the hem. The embroidery on the sleeves and bottom border adds a subtle charm.
Pakistani Chikankari Kurtis: These Kurtis are characterized by their long length and unique flair. They often feature intricate Chikankari patterns all over the garment, creating a stunning visual impact.
The Significance of Chikankari Kurtis
Chikankari Kurtis hold significant cultural and artistic value in India. Apart from being a reflection of the rich historical heritage, they are also considered a symbol of femininity and grace. The timeless appeal of Chikankari lies in its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modern fashion, making it a favorite among women of all ages.
The craftsmanship involved in creating Chikankari Kurtis also plays a crucial role in their significance. The art of hand embroidery is a dying craft, and the popularity of Chikankari helps sustain and promote this traditional skill, ensuring that it continues to thrive for future generations.
Chikankari Kurtis in Modern Fashion
In recent years, Chikankari Kurtis have experienced a resurgence in popularity, both in India and internationally. Fashion designers have incorporated Chikankari into their collections, giving it a contemporary twist and making it accessible to a broader audience.
Celebrities and influencers have also contributed to the revival of Chikankari Kurtis by showcasing them in various events and social media platforms. The versatility of these Kurtis allows them to be styled in myriad ways, making them a favorite among fashion enthusiasts.
How to Care for Chikankari Kurtis
Owning a Chikankari Kurti is a treasure, and proper care is essential to preserve its beauty and longevity. Here are some tips for caring for your Chikankari Kurti:
Hand wash gently: Avoid using harsh detergents and opt for a mild soap or detergent for handwashing. Gently knead the fabric and avoid wringing to prevent damage to the delicate embroidery.
Dry in shade: Direct sunlight can fade the embroidery, so always dry your Chikankari Kurti in the shade.
Iron carefully: Turn the Kurti inside out and place a cotton cloth over the embroidery before ironing on a low heat setting.
Store with care: Always store your Chikankari Kurti in a clean, dry place. To prevent snagging, avoid hanging it with sharp edges or jewelry.

Conclusion
Chikankari Kurtis are not just garments; they are a living testament to the timeless artistry and cultural heritage of India. Each stitch on a Chikankari Kurti speaks volumes about the dedication of the skilled artisans who have kept this craft alive for centuries.
Whether worn for a special occasion or as a part of everyday attire, Chikankari Kurtis exude elegance and charm. As we continue to appreciate and celebrate the beauty of Chikankari, let us also recognize and support the artisans who pour their hearts and souls into creating these masterpieces of art.
In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, Chikankari Kurtis stand as a symbol of enduring beauty and craftsmanship, reminding us of the richness of our cultural heritage and the importance of preserving traditional arts for generations to come.

Making desi aesthetics, pt. 2
Okay so, the first part is here. Also, for all discussions regarding this topic, let's use #making desi aesthetics !
The first aesthetic of this part, and 5th overall is a mix of bollywood (I personally feel that it gives 50s bollywood vibes, ngl.) and Lucknowi fashion. It has a very vintage feel, and the main fabrics include chiffon, georgette, organza etc. The main print is chikankari.
This is pretty minimalistic, and focuses on floral prints, white, pastels, grey and peach. It includes dainty jewelry, especially stuff like pearls. For modern wear, stuff like tank tops, linen pants or just loose cotton dresses will suit.
The second aesthetic is a mix of Bengali and Odia aesthetics, overall. Like for fabrics, I feel ki cotton would suit very well, with some block motifs, perhaps? And some traditional handlooms in both cotton and silk would be nice. Modern wear mein you can have a fusion wear thingy, kurtis with tailored pants or skirts, and then chunky boots?
Oxidized or white jewelry will really suit the overall aesthetic. In makeup, kohli with brown lip shades, especially highlighting the eyes will be v v good. Colors are mustard yellow, deep red, white, magenta, indigo.
Third we have this aesthetic inspired from classical dance, mostly from Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, it gives a very old temple statue wali vibe in general. Colors include gold, deep blue, emerald, orange and maroons. Waistbands, maang tikaas, and gold jewellry are an important part of this aesthetic.
I think in modern wear, peplum tops, or structured blouses will suit very much, along with jumpsuits and maxi skirts. Again, gold jewelry is here as well. Eye and lip makeup are very prominent.
The last one is a south indian-inspired aesthetic. Fabrics is ofc Kanjeevaram , why not. I also think Banarasi will suit this aesthetic too, despite not being from this region. Colors are gold, white, emerald, red and yellow.
As for jewelry, the focus should mainly be on chokers, jhumkas and I think septum rings can be a nice inclusion too. Heels, blazers, maxis will really suit this look. I think Midi dresses will look good as well. Chokers can be incorporated in the modern look as well, I think.
As for names, well-
Rajasthani one= Madhumalti
Mughal inspired= Gulab
Vrindavan inspired= Vrindavan
Earthy aesthetic= Champa
Bollywood one= Malmal
Bengali/Odia one= Kaanan
Classical dance inspired= Rajasi
South indian one= Swarna
These are the name ideas that I got, if you all have any ideas for any other aesthetics, then send it to my inbox!!!
