Maximizing Space in a Small Modern Kitchen Design
Keeping kitchen wares, decorative accessories and other clutter out of sight is key to making your small modern kitchen design feel larger. Cupboard pull-outs can increase storage efficiency and help to keep items within reach without cutting off a line of visibility or blocking a walking path.
The broken plan is a great option for smaller spaces, separating the kitchen from dining and living areas with full or half partitions that can be opened or pulled back as needed. Look for partition alternatives that include freestanding furniture or slatted screens.
1. Use Monochromatic Color Schemes
Color is a powerful design tool that can make any room appear larger. White walls and cabinetry are an obvious choice, but darker tones can be just as effective in a small kitchen.
Rich shades can also look upscale when used on floor tiles in a narrow layout. But for the most impact, limit this look to the floor so that upper cabinets and walls can remain pale and open.
Cooking utensils and equipment as well as hanging towels are often found on kitchen counters, so use these areas to add pops of coordinating color that will mix with your overall monochromatic scheme.
2. Forgo Upper Cabinetry
A modern kitchen trend that’s sure to endure, avoiding upper cabinetry gives a room a more open feel and lets in more natural light. Smartly outfitted lower cabinets can make up for the loss of storage space.
Consider a clever backsplash or countertop ledge to hide utensils and other clutter. A breakfast cupboard can stash away a few essentials and a kettle or coffeemaker. And a pantry in the kitchen can hold bulky cookware and glassware. Alternatively, use a kitchen island to double as extra workspace and storage.
3. Create an Open Layout
Open kitchens offer great flexibility when it comes to design and can work well with many different layout ideas. The trick is to clearly demarcate the cooking area from other living spaces by playing with lighting and other simple interior design techniques.
In this small open kitchen, dark green full-height cabinetry adds a sophisticated look that keeps the cooking zone separate from the living space. To keep the space feeling airy, floating open shelving is used to store a range of items, including mugs and utensils.
4. Install Mirrors
One of the most important things you can do to make a small kitchen look modern is install clever lighting ideas. Clever mirrored lighting will help bounce natural light throughout a compact room.
It’s also a great way to visually expand a tight space and keep your floor plan clear. To maximize the effect, consider showcasing an edited collection of ceramics on open shelving and selecting sleek seating like backless Lucite chairs and a mod tulip table.
5. Opt for Single Sinks
While a single sink can be a real space-saver in small modern kitchen designs, many kitchen necessities require ample counterspace. Avoid encroaching on precious countertop area with clever kitchen appliance layout ideas.
Clever shelving options can also help keep countertops clear. A breakfast cupboard with bi-fold doors can hide away jars of jam, sugar and coffee, plus kettles and toasters. Glossy door fronts bounce light around and make a kitchen feel bigger. When not in use, simply roll the unit out of the way.
6. Invest in Integrated Appliances
Integrated appliances are ideal for small kitchens as they offer a sleek finish that suits the overall design scheme. They also sit flush with the cabinets, making them suitable for both modern and traditional designs.
Instead of opting for a double butler sink, consider a single one, which will take up less space and make the room appear larger. Similarly, choosing a slimline dishwasher and fridge will reduce the amount of items to stack, freeing up more floor space.
7. Open-Plan Dining
If your home is open-plan, you can still tuck a small kitchen away without compromising on the living space. One option is to fit a kitchen into a single wall setting that conceals it from view with a bank of floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
Glossy door fronts and transparent shelving make these a visually smart choice for open-plan spaces. Hanging a fabulous pendant light will also add interest and help bounce light around the room. If you go for a galley kitchen layout, keep walls minimal to improve visibility and walking lines.
8. Opt for Broken Plan
A broken layout is a clever way to retain the benefits of open-plan living while providing some sense of privacy. Open boxed shelving units are a modern alternative to partitions and can help distinguish between a kitchen and sitting area, for example.
A one-wall kitchen is a great option for small homes as it keeps all the essentials within reach and helps to streamline workflow. For larger spaces, consider a U-shaped layout or horseshoe design to make the most of your space.

Can you DIY a Kitchen Renovation
Do you want to renovate your kitchen? You can, but here are some things to keep in mind.
A kitchen renovation is a large project. Make sure you have enough time and energy to complete it. You should also have basic plumbing and carpentry skills before you begin. Also, you will need to decide what aspects of your kitchen to be changed, such as extra storage space, changing old appliances, or changing the lighting.
Once you’ve planned your kitchen renovation, it’s time to start shopping for materials. You will need to make a decision about cabinets, countertops, flooring and appliances.
This is an excellent idea. This will help you decide how much space your kitchen needs and what type layout would work best.
There are many choices when it comes to cabinets. There are two types of cabinets available: Ready-to-assemble (RTA), or custom. RTA cabinets can be made in many styles and colors and are generally less expensive than custom ones.
It is essential that you ensure safety and security during large-scale renovations. For renovations, it might be a good idea to check the local building codes.
Although it may seem tempting to handle a large-scale project on your feet, it is best that you seek professional advice. By hiring a qualified contractor, you can save both time and money. You will also be able to work with professionals to ensure that your project runs smoothly.
Are Kitchen Remodeling Costs Worth it?
Remodeling your kitchen can make your home look better, but it can also come at a high cost. If you’re thinking about remodelling your kitchen, you might wonder if the costs are worth it.
There are many factors that you need to consider when deciding whether or not remodeling your kitchen is a good idea. The first consideration is the price of your home. You will need to make sure that the remodel costs are covered in your sale price if you intend on selling your house soon.
You should also consider the cost of the actual remodel. The cost of high-end kitchen renovations can reach $50,000. It is important to make sure that you have the finances in place to cover them. If you’re not planning on selling your home, the cost may be less of a concern.
The last thing you need to think about is how much you’ll use your new kitchen. If you entertain often or cook large meals, you’ll want to ensure that your new kitchen can accommodate your needs. If you don’t plan on using your kitchen much, you might be able to get by with a more minor, less expensive remodel.
If you don’t know where to start, here are some tips for getting started:
Consider whether you would like to replace or make new cabinets. The cost of a kitchen remodel can increase significantly if new cabinets are added. And, if you choose to replace all the cabinets, you’ll need to remove them before installing new ones.
Carefully choose your colours. Your kitchen’s overall appearance can be affected by your choice of colour. Make sure you choose carefully.
Decide if you want to update the flooring. If you plan to sell your house soon, you might want to leave the flooring alone. A freshly painted concrete slab could give off a “new look.”
Consider adding more storage. Your kitchen’s usable area can be increased by adding shelves, cabinets, and drawers.
Lighting is important. You can brighten the dark corners of your kitchen by installing recessed lights above the sink, stove, or refrigerator.
Add Appliances. You can save energy by replacing your fridge with a more efficient model. It can also increase the value of your home.
You should ensure that you have enough outlets. Most kitchens only come equipped with one or two outlets. This means that your blender, microwave and other appliances won’t work in your kitchen.
Water lines should not be overlooked. The water pipes are concealed behind floors and walls. Before beginning any work, ensure you check for leaks.
Eliminate clutter. If your kitchen is already cluttered, you can organize it. You don’t need to keep it cluttered.
Get estimates from several contractors. Compare prices by square footage, material type (cabinets or stone), as well as the number of windows and doors.
You should look into financing options. Many people opt to finance their kitchen remodels. You don’t have to pay interest while you make the payments.
Get a rough idea of the length of time you intend to stay in your house. Your kitchen will be more valuable the longer you keep it.
Keep track. You can keep track of every detail by using a notebook.
Plan ahead. Sketch out the vision you have for your kitchen. This will make it easier to visualize the whole thing.
What are some common mistakes made when renovating your kitchen?
A kitchen installed in an inappropriate location might not work.
You could get wet floors if you place the dishwasher too far from your sink.
If the fridge is placed next the oven, it can make opening the door difficult.
Insufficient counter space can lead to problems.
A common mistake is to not have enough storage. Make sure to have enough cabinets and shelves to store all your kitchen appliances and gadgets.
It is difficult to choose the right appliances for a kitchen remodel.
It is important to ensure that they are both space- and energy-efficient.
A mistake is not hiring a professional to assist with the design. A professional can make sure everything fits into the space and is accurate to scale.
Don’t try to do everything yourself. This is a common mistake with kitchen renovations. For a successful kitchen remodeling project, it is crucial to understand your limits and when you should call in the professionals.
A mistake is not planning enough. Kitchens can be costly, so ensure you have the funds to cover the entire project.
It is a mistake to not have a clear vision of the style and layout you desire. Before starting a renovation you should have a clear idea of the style, layout, finishes, and materials that you are looking for.
These are just some of the many mistakes people make when renovating their homes. To avoid making these errors, consult a professional before you start your project. If you are careful about planning and execution, your kitchen renovation will be a success.
What are the steps involved in remodeling a kitchen
Plan your kitchen remodeling. Decide what you want to change and how much you want to spend.
Find a contractor. You can get bids from many contractors. Choose the one you feel most comfortable.
Demolition. This is the fun bit! Rip out the old cabinets, countertops, and appliances.
Installation. According to your plans, the contractor will install cabinets, countertops, appliances, and other items.
Final touches. Your kitchen remodel is complete when you add finishing touches such as new hardware or paint.

How To
How do I choose a kitchen contractor?
The following tips will help guide you in your decision-making process when it comes to hiring a Kitchen Remodeling contractor.
Ask your friends to share their experiences with different contractors. It’s a great way for contractors to receive honest feedback. Ask about their work ethic, professionalism, cleanliness and punctuality. Consider asking them if there were any problems with their contractor. If they had problems with the contractor, how did they solve them?
Contact several companies and request quotes for your project. Be prepared to provide a detailed description of your project and explain why you want to hire someone else. It’s a good idea to tell them that your search is for someone who has experience in kitchen renovations. It is possible to include details such as the size and type of materials used. You should tell them exactly what finish you desire (i.e., countertops and cabinets, backsplash, flooring). Don’t forget to mention anything specific that you would like done during the project. Are you looking to have new appliances installed? Do you prefer a particular type of cabinetry or style? Do you want a particular feature, such as a built-in microwave oven or wine fridge?
Make sure to verify that the company is covered by worker’s compensation and insurance. You can check online to find out if the contractor is a member of any trade associations. It is always best to choose a company that is a member of a respected organization.
Schedule a meeting with the contractor to discuss your project in detail. Ask them questions about their experience, qualifications, and methods. Ask them how they would approach your project, and what timeline they envisage.
Refer to previous clients for references. Don’t take a contractor’s word for it. Ask for references. Call the names he recommends from his list of references. You can reach them by calling the people he recommends.
You can see past customer reviews on sites such as Yelp, Angie’s List and Houzz. These sites are popular for homeowners who want to leave feedback after they’ve completed projects. Positive reviews will assure you that you get a good job.
A kitchen designer can help you create a plan to remodel your kitchen. An experienced designer will have a better understanding of what looks best in your particular kitchen. She/he will also be knowledgeable about the latest trends for kitchens.

Inspiration from Lera, on how to make your teeny apt. look bigger and brighter. The small foyer’s bright door is surrounded by a forest of lime green tree graphics. The trees are sliced by two strips of mirrors that appear to be openings to additional rooms but are really just reflections of the social zone.
Between two doors is a mirrored hall closet with two bullet lights on a track positioned to light it up. A fun round blue rug at the entry door represents a small forest pond at the base of the wall trees.
The bathroom creates a division between the foyer and the kitchen and the wall between is the media center – but also bar seating. As with the tree wall, this wall also has a fun visual of vertical wood planking presented in a white and gray.
The kitchen is a white on white visual with pale wood counters. A roman blind on the window adds a touch of organic pattern.
The dining table separates the kitchen from the living/sleeping zone. Lucite chairs lend a transparency that lets the eye travel through them thereby subconsciously increasing the size of the space.
The terrace is fitted with the same roman blinds that are in the kitchen and the batik style leaf pattern continues the forest theme already seen on the walls.
The side chair transforms into an office chair when its time to get to work and a pivoting desk rotates out from its slot within the wall cabinets to create the desk.
When the desk is at right angles to the cabinetry it is right up against the sleeper sofa without one inch to spare.
When the desk is hidden within its slot in the floor to ceiling cabinetry it is barely noticeable, appearing simply as a wood detail.
The sofa just fits within a void in the wall of cabinets. Lera eliminated the need for a coffee table by installing two small cantilevered shelves above the arm rests. At night, when the sofa pulls out into a bed there is no need to move a coffee table out of the way.
The bathroom behind the TV is the only other space within the apartment.
While it doesn’t continue the forest theme, it is a bright fun space that even features yellow grout between the white floor tiles.
When you see the floor plan, it is amazing how small this apartment really is. Lera did an awesome job of creating a big impression within such a tiny space.

he title is a bit of a misdirect though it does start with this fun image:
Peter Rahal, the 33-year-old energy bar impresario who sold RxBar to Kellogg for $600 million and became something of a consumer products legend in the process, stands in the gigantic, spotless kitchen of his new Miami Beach mansion. Behind him, floor-to-ceiling windows revealed his pool, his outdoor bar, and Sunset Harbour. Throughout the house are expensive-looking modernist metal chandeliers. The kitchen drawers are filled with gold utensils.
And for dinner, Rahal is eating a can of beans.
Correction: He isn’t even eating the beans. He’s just showing the dinner for one — chickpeas, eggs, avocado — that he makes most nights.
Rahal bought the fully furnished house for about $19 million in May. He splits his time between his longtime Chicago apartment and this place; he chose Miami Beach in part because Florida has no personal income tax. A Ferrari 488 and a cream Vespa are parked in the driveway. A housekeeper, who comes daily, keeps the seven bedrooms spotless, though most are usually empty. Upstairs, there are his-and-hers dressing rooms; the “hers” — which has a Lucite-leg stool topped with pink tufts sitting forlornly at a vanity — is untouched. It’s as if when Rahal was sending wire instructions to get his RxBar money from Kellogg, he ticked a box requesting the “newly rich bachelor” package and this setup fell from the sky.
lol:
But things pretty quickly started changing for Rahal in unexpected ways. The $600 million figure bedazzled his employees, and he suddenly morphed from founder-boss into figurehead. “You used to be able to just think out loud. It would be like, ‘Hey, that tree’s really interesting,’” he says, indicating at a palm tree. But with his new status, whatever off-the-cuff thing Rahal said sent staff scurrying: “Oh, Peter wants extra trees like that there.”
it later touches into some more weighty stuff:
In spring 2018, Rahal read Skin in the Game by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a former trader turned essayist who argues that people must risk personal success and failure to work at their peak.
or
The can of beans sits unopened on the kitchen counter, and Rahal, who has a sore throat, makes himself some green tea with honey instead of eating dinner. He looks tired as he stirs the tea with one of the gold spoons that came with the house. The clinking of metal against the ceramic mug is the only sound to be heard: There’s no music playing, no TV on, no cats or dogs or neighbors or birds or even cars in the near distance.
That’s one of the problems Rahal seems to be grappling with: More money, generally, means less struggle, and if it’s struggle that made him, how does he find that going forward?
It’s weird being so rich, so quickly. Rahal’s now socializing with a group of youngish guys — and it is mostly guys, in his new Miami circle, at least — who have inherited or made a ton of money. He’s invited out to steakhouses with movie producers and music producers. He’s throwing an Art Basel party. He and his new friends talk about the relative tax rates of Florida versus Puerto Rico. He lives on an island with a guardhouse. If he wants to date someone, or if he meets a new potential friend, they tend to do a standard Google check of his name, and the top search results are about how much money he has.
Rahal has to rough up his life. He tries to do this daily, even with small things, like carrying his groceries from the store rather than taking a cab. He fasts for 18 hours at a time. He regularly alternates first-class flights with middle-seat coach tickets.
It also means that to trigger the sense of adversity that’s gotten him this far, Rahal has to rough up his life so he doesn’t get too comfortable. He tries to do this daily, even with small things, like carrying his groceries from the store rather than taking a cab. He fasts for 18 hours at a time. He regularly alternates first-class flights with middle-seat coach tickets. He forces himself to read, which, with dyslexia, he says, is painful.
“With some people, an event like this would change them,” says Shah, his Chicago friend. “And suddenly, Peter’s life has changed — he went through a divorce; in every way, Peter’s life has changed — but I feel like he is what he is.”
And though Rahal says he’s incredibly grateful for everything he has, he’s trying to figure out bigger ways to reintroduce struggle to his life — like starting another company where he stands to lose a lot.
“Humans’ natural tendency is to remove pain, and we’ve come to a point where we’ve done it so well I find myself seeking uncomfortability,” Rahal says. “The question is if you want to grow.”

How to make room for quality moments at home
In a city brimming with things to do and places to go, we sometimes find ourselves yearning for home. However, with so much time spent out and about, it’s easy to neglect the place we live until it loses its warmth and charm. But with a bit of smart shopping and the right design, you can create a comfortable and convivial atmosphere, even in a small space. Make your home a haven for all the things you love – whether its relaxing with a book, working out or simply waking up to a good cup of coffee.
Make light of it
The key to making a small place look spacious is filling it with light. Choose whites and pastel colours for your walls and floors. A mirror placed adjacent to a window will reflect light around the room and make it brighter. Glass and Lucite furniture is great for creating the illusion of space – just be careful not to stub your toe! These subtle changes can transform any apartment into a home you look forward to coming back to every day.
Keep it minimal
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Your home should be a reflection of your character, not a storeroom, so clear up the clutter. If you find it hard to part with your belongings, try organising them according to colour and size. Rather than busy patterns, go with blocks of colour to make the space appear streamlined. Choose items that are simple and stylish, functional and decorative.
For example, the new Nespresso Essenza Mini not only brews up the perfect cup of coffee every time, it’s ultra-compact and designed with purist aesthetics. Its rounded corners and smooth lines add style and sophistication to your kitchen, and it’s mini enough to fit anywhere without taking up precious counter space.
Be flexible
Design your space around you. With the right furniture, you can enjoy your hobbies at home, no matter how small it is. For budding chefs, a multifunctional cooker takes care of everything from slow-cooking to steaming, ridding your kitchen of clutter. If you love having friends over, an expandable table will ensure everyone has a seat, whether it’s dinner for ten or two. A sofa bed is perfect for welcoming overnight guests and is also great for those lazy movie marathon days.
Make yourself a priority
Home is the place you can be yourself. If you love reading, make your books a central feature and carve out the perfect reading spot to settle into whenever you feel like it. For home workouts, skip the bulky treadmill and choose versatile gear like a yoga mat and weights so you can effortlessly transform a room into a gym and back again in no time.
Avoid the café queues and get your coffee hit at home, brewed to perfection by the Nespresso Essenza Mini. What’s more, with mini prices starting at just $158, you can indulge in this luxury little coffee maker without breaking the bank. Simple changes like these give you more time to do the things you love in the comfort of your own home.

2019 Home Renovation Ideas
This was a wonderful two-phase project that began when these clients decided they wanted to remodel their kitchen. This east-coast family had been living with builder-grade finishes that were dark and “Tuscan-Inspired” and were ready to have an updated kitchen that reflected their New Hampshire roots. Amy Tausk of Swoon Interiors and Stephanie Frees of Plain & Posh (previously featured here) worked together to design all new custom cabinetry that is more functional and beautiful.
Take notes on all details shared by the designers. I am sure this home renovation will give you many ideas for your own renovations this year!
Photography by Picture Perfect House.
2019 Home Renovation Ideas
The kitchen felt dark and outdated before Amy and Stephanie worked their “magic” in this space!
Kitchen “After”
Kitchen Renovation: The designers revamped the kitchen into a clean, white and fresh space – but with a warm and cozy vibe like the rest of their house. Quartz countertops, clean-lined white cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, reclaimed wood and handcrafted subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern really transformed the space.
Counter stools – Spin Swivel Backless Counter stool from Crate & Barrel – Other Beautiful Counterstools: here, here, here & here.
Shiplap
Shiplap: Reclaimed wood shiplap on the island really added warmth and the rustic vibe the designers were looking for.
Cabinetry
Kitchen cabinets are from the Plain & Posh custom collection and are a non-beaded inset.
Range
The range is by Viking.
Flooring: Solid hardwood flooring – similar here.
Cabinet Hardware
Cabinet Hardware is by Schaub and is the Menlo Park knob and pull.
Backsplash
Backsplash: Masia 3×6 Subway Tile in Ivory – Other Tiles: here, here, here, here & here.
Kitchen Island
Kitchen Island Design: Keeping the island a square size made the best spatial sense in this room – and lent itself to using one larger chandelier instead of two pendants. Amy decided to make that the main light feature in the room and just reconfigure the can lighting around the rest of the space.
The light fixture is by Currey & Company the Simpatico Small Orb Chandelier.
Kitchen Island Dimensions – The island is 56” square
Wall Ovens
Wall Ovens: Wolf – similar here & here.
Kitchen Countertop Decor Ideas: Wooden Cutting Boards, Cake Stand, Crocks, Pitcher, Canisters, Dough Bowl, Planters, Topiaries.
Kitchen Sink

Kitchen Faucet

Kitchen Countertop
Countertops are Caesarstone London Grey.
Cabinet Paint Color
Kitchen cabinets and trim are Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.
Window Treatment
Window Treatment – Hunter Douglas Designer Screen Roller Lite Rise and Skyline Panels.
Breakfast Room
Their clients also wanted a cozy spot for their family to gather – in the mornings with coffee or for dinnertime conversation. The slip-covered chairs and weathered-wood table are now a favorite spot in the house. Even on a cloudy day, it feels bright and cheerful … truly the heart of the home for this wonderful family.
Table – Eldridge Dining Table, Home Decorators Collection – Others: here, here, here & here.
Dining Chairs
Chairs – Linen Slipcovered Accent chairs from Wisteria – Others: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Bar
Previously the corner of the kitchen housed a tiny desk and became a catchall for a little bit of everything. They knew they could turn it into a much more usable and beautiful space. Now it is an entertaining-workhorse – with antique-mirrored upper cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator and wine rack below.
Home Remodel
Fast-forward a couple years and this family knew it was time to transform a few other rooms in their home into the fresh clean look we had given them in their kitchen. On the list, the Master Bathroom, Laundry Room and first floor Powder Room.
Powder Room
“Good things come in small packages! The jumping off point for this room was this fantastic watercolor-inspired wallpaper. We matched the color on the custom-built vanity and added shiplap to the back wall. A favorite library sconce, fun crystal knobs and this gorgeous wall-mount faucet are other details we love. Once again, we warmed up the space with a touch of natural wood, in the form of this wood-framed mirror that ties in with the existing wood floors. Finally, it’s hard to see in photos, but the quartz countertop has a lovely textured, “leathered” finish.”
Powder Room Sconce: Anette Library Light by Ralph Lauren – similar here.
Shiplap
The Shiplap behind the sink area is painted in Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.
Mirror – Bentwood Rounded Rectangular Mirror from Rejuvenation.
Faucet
The faucet is from Newport Brass and is the Fairfield wall Mounted faucet (3-947).
Wallpaper
Wallpaper: Graham & Brown Indigo Aqua Wallpaper (available through the designer) – Others: here, here & here.
Artwork: One Kings Lane.
Vanity
Vanity was custom Built by the Plain & Posh collection and painted Benjamin Moore – Affinity collection Blue Echo 505.
Master Bathroom “Before”
“The builder of this home was obviously of a “More is More!” mindset … more arches, more walls, more steps – all if it making what is not a huge space to begin with feel even more cramped and choppy. While the colors were neutral, they still felt dark and dingy.”
Master Bathroom “After”
“We wanted to make the room feel light, bright and luxurious. Now, it is the exact same square footage as before but it feels huge!”
Ceiling
“Even with all of the lights off – it is so bright and cheery. And check out the ceiling! With all of the arches gone, Stephanie was able to see what it could become! She created this unique hexagon shape which inspired the rest of the room layout. The gorgeous wood bead chandelier looks stunning in the space.”
Flooring
“One of our preferences when doing bright white spaces is to bring in a warm element. We could have easily done a light floor – white or gray marble, and it would have been beautiful, but maybe a little cold – and certainly not as cozy feeling. Amy approached our client about doing a wood-look tile in a herringbone pattern for the floors – (especially since the adjoining bedroom is carpeted … we wouldn’t be competing with more wood), she wasn’t sure if she would be on board. Thankfully, she loved the idea of giving the room a slightly more rustic, farmhouse element.”
Flooring: wood/tiles: Hill House Field Tile 6×36 – Others: here, here & here.
Vanity Layout
“What used to be one straight vanity and a big empty wall … … is now a beautifully designed double vanity that wraps the corner with mirrors and provides and extra spot with seating for putting on makeup.”
Make-up Drawer
The two small drawer fronts under the makeup area mirror are actually doors that swing open to hidden outlets. Genius!
Vanity Stool – Pottery Barn
Countertop
“And … just the right quartz counter tops are still a win-win in our book, for both their beauty and durability. This one has such great movement and even some soft brown tones that tie in with the flooring.”
Beautiful Bathroom Accessories: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Cabinetry
Bathroom cabinetry is by the Plain & Posh custom collection. Timeless design!
Chandelier
Chandelier: Dauphine Wood Empire Chandelier by RH Baby & Child – Other Beautiful Chandeliers: here, here, here, here, here, here & here (different sizes).
Cabinet Paint Color
Cabinet paint color Benjamin Moore Classic Gray 1548.
Artwork from Minted.
Bathroom Sconces
“Amy had been dying to find just the right project in which to use these vertical double light sconces, and I knew this was the one. As big as they are, they don’t take up much visual space when mounted to the mirror, yet they still make such a statement in the room.”
Sconces: Visual Comfort – Graydon Double Bath Light by Thomas O’Brien.
Faucet & Sink
Bathroom faucets are Rohl, Palladian collection.
Sinks are Kohler Caxton Rectangle (K-20000-0) in White.
Hardware is by Atlas – The Elizabeth pull in Polished Nickel Both 419 and 420PN.
Freestanding Tub
Tub is by Signature Hardware and is the Rosalind Pedestal tub.
Tub Filler: Rohl.
Tub Stool
Wooden Stool – Dip Dyed Stool from Serena & Lily.
Shower
The entrance to the shower is now on an angle.
Window
A large window was added facing the tub to allow you to see through to the gorgeous mosaic tile on the back wall.
Shower Window
A high window was added inside of the shower to bring in light. The water closet (with cabinets for extra storage!) is located on the left.
Tiling
In addition to the sparkle the mosaics add, we dressed up a classic white subway tile with beautiful marble hex tile on the shower floor, gleaming polished nickel fixtures and a stunning lucite door handle.
All of the plumbing fixtures are from Rohl Palladian collection.
Shower Tiles: – Madrid Handmade Subway Tile in Blanco – similar here & here.
Accent Tile: Calacatta Gold Polished Interlocking Mosaic Accent Tile – similar here.
Floor Tile: Calacatta 5” Hexagon Honed on floor – similar here & here.
Laundry Room “Before”
Next – the laundry room. Like most builder-grade laundry rooms, this one was functional with no style. And … it was not even functioning to its full potential. The entire right wall was left blank … our clients put in their own table as a makeshift folding area.
Laundry Room “After”
“The cabinets were painted this lovely custom shade and given new doors and hardware. And in a room like a laundry room, why not go fun and bold with the flooring? We selected this tile that mimics the look of more expensive cement tiles.”
Tile is from Home Depot and is the Merola Tile and is the Arte Grey encaustic porcelain– similar here.
Sink Area
A new sink, countertop and faucet updated the old utility sink.
Color
The cabinetry is Plain & Posh collection. Stephanie, was extremely kind and called the cabinet maker to get the cabinet color just for you! The cabinet color is Slate Tile by Sherwin Williams SW 7624.
The faucet is the Litze pull out spray Square spout and industrial handle from Brizo in the brilliance stainless finish.
Laundry sink is from Sterling the Latitude 995-0.
Washer & Dryer: LG.
Cabinet Countertop & Hardware
“Of course, we had to add some warm wood tones too, which we did with a custom built wood countertop over the washer and dryer.”
The counter top on the washer and dryer are a wood top in a custom stain.
Hardware is by Atlas and is the Bradbury pull in their black finish.
Dream Laundry Room
“And on the other side of the room … brand new cabinetry was added, along with a true designated area for folding laundry and wall-mounted drying racks.”
Beadboard Drying Rack – Ballard Designs – similar here & here.
Storage
“But that’s not all … previously this corner behind the door was just a place for piling up all of the tall household items that wouldn’t fit elsewhere. Now, this “bottom-less” cabinet is the perfect place to hold a clothes steamer or vacuum that you can simply roll right out and use when needed.”
Folding Area Countertop
The folding area counter top is Caeserstone Pebble (4030) in a honed finish.
Laundry Basket – Steele Divided Canvas Sorter- Crate & Barrel – also available here.
Aren’t these designers just amazing? Besides being very talented (yes, you should hire them!
), they were kind enough to share all details, so you can not only feel inspired but also, guided.

The $20 Buy That Makes Our Favorite Trend Way Less Scary
One of the trade-offs of living in a big city is small living quarters in exchange for easy access to culture and nightlife. I live in an itty-bitty studio apartment on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Space is at a premium, and to make the best use of my square footage, I own quite a bit of Lucite (or acrylic) furniture and home accessories. The see-through material looks chic and doesn't take up a lot of visual room. For instance, since you can see right through the acrylic stools tucked under my kitchen counter, the overall look is sleek and less cluttered than a dark wood or heavy metal version for seating. It has completely changed the appearance of my apartment. However, acrylic is incredibly difficult to clean.

A Custom Home Dream Team
If you are anything like us you have dreamt about building a custom home from start to finish at one time or another. A few things we would add to our must have list would be a great room for all to gather, a secret door to a safe room, a dark cool wine cellar, his and her sinks and closets and a pool overlooking Mobile Bay with a fabulous outdoor living area. A classic southern charmer with contemporary style. However the thought and the planning of each and every detail can seem very overwhelming to most. It is a complicated task to bring such dreams to reality.
We were recently given a tour to the actual real life home of our dreams; designed, built, and decorated by some of the top industry leaders...or as we like to call them the dream team. It exceeded our expectations and then some. It is a shame we don't get to move right in.
This home, pool house and wharf were designed by Robert McCown of McCown Designs, built by Robert Brown and Cliff Pitman of Pitman Brown Building Company, interiors by Sylvia Atchison of Atchison Home, kitchen and bathroom hardware and accessories by Rayford & Associates, stone in the home is fabricated and installed by Stone Interiors, and a pool by Cox Pools.
Robert McCown showed us a few of his drawings and rendering software of the home and he also explained more about his hand in the project. “Inspiration was pulled by no.1 the client’s taste and desire for something unique, but of local vernacular.”
PATIO
Features we love: french doors lining this large classically southern yet contemporary style porch, multiple seating arrangements and unique materials used.
Robert Brown of Pitman Brown Building Company said when asked about the materials that were used “This was my first house to work with Robert McCown. He is a talented designer with an array of different details than we have used in the past. The mix of raw steel, antique rustic oak beams, quarter sawn oak accent walls and cabinets were stunning when completed.”
Robert McCown explained why the project was so successful, “The client was very interested in having the whole team involved throughout the construction of the project and I believe that when this is able to happen, the project is taken to a whole new level.”
FOYER
Features we love: the nickel gap boards used on the walls, the intricate hardwood floor design, the contrasting color of the front door and the gorgeous archway that leads into the living area.
HALLWAY
Features we love: exposed beams, natural light coming through both sides of the hallway and the mixed materials used in the floor. This is such a cool aspect of the house, if you need a hallway.....have a hallway like this one!
We asked Sylvia about the interior goals the homeowners were trying to achieve. “They have three children, two teenage boys and a tween girl. They love to entertain friends as well as business associates and therefore needed a home that not only looked good but would withstand lots of traffic. We used lots of performance fabrics such as sunbrella and velvet which is tough as nails. Our children and our needs change quickly, therefore we want our homes to be able to do the same without completely starting over. We think we have accomplished this and that the family will be able to adapt things as needed for a very long time”
FAMILY ROOM
Sylvia also gave us some insight to some of the unique interiors she brought into the home. “Lots of beautiful furniture of course, but my favorite is a unique lucite base paired with a pair of old doors from India that created the coffee table in the Family Room. In the Master Bedroom we used a raw silk way covering with lots of drapery and carpet to create a quiet place to retreat to at the end of the day. You can actually hear the sound change when enter the room. It is a very peaceful area of the house.”
STUDY
MASTER
Features we love: spa like neutrals that make the most relaxing room after a long day and the natural light you get from every angle. This room is stunning.
The stone used for the tub and vanity is Alabama White Marble from Stone Interiors. Owner Dustin Weil and team worked with the home owners to hand select the perfect materials for their home. The goal was to provide impeccable service, assist them in sourcing and selecting the right materials for the project and to fabricate and install a stunning finished product. This was their second time to work with these home owners and have enjoyed working alongside Pitman Brown on many projects.
MASTER BATH
Sylvia told us what a joy it was working with Rayford & Associates on this project. “We used Rayford’s for all the door and cabinet hardware as well as towel bars, etc. They have the best selection around and such a convenient location. We worked with Campbell Rayford who is a master at this. This project required a lot of hardware and Campbell really helped with coordinating and making sure every pull and handle got labeled and onto the right cabinet.”
KITCHEN
Kitchen Countertop is Mystery White honed marble with a flat edge profile from Stone Interiors. Robert McCown went on to tell us, “I worked closely on materials and finishes with Sylvia, Robert Brown, and all of R.B.'s craftsmen, which is the key to any successful project.”
Sylvia explained her favorite aspect of the interiors in this home. “The finishes! This house has great finishes, from the intricately designed wood foyer floor to the combination peacock pavers and wood to all the special tile finishes found throughout. All the architectural details are amazing! Lots of the wood cabinets, beams, ceilings, etc. were finished by David Walton, a local artist.”
DINING
The stone used for the serving counter is Mystery White Honed Marble w/ Eased edge from Stone Interiors.
BAR
Features we love: Unique Phillip Jefferies wallcovering, steel floating shelving and a hammered brass sink and faucet from Rayfords, Dekton Vegha Wet Bar w/ Mitered Eased edge from Stone Interiors.
SIDE PATIO
Features we love: The handsome outdoor cooking area made of pecky cyprus with masculine hardware from Rayford & Associates, the thought out view of Mobile Bay to enjoy while entertaining and impactful design of a minimalist fountain. The countertop is Dekton Vegha Outdoor Kitchen w/ Mitered Eased edge from Stone Interiors. Dekton is a new, ultra-compact surface which is non porous and heat resistant. These qualities make it an excellent option for outdoor applications.
POOL & COVERED OUTDOOR LIVING AREA
Features we love: Can we just say everything? The curves in the roof, the spectacular views, the contemporary pool design and the homey outdoor/Indoor interiors to name a few.
Robert McCown told us, “I drew local aesthetic inspiration from the original Grand Hotel, Mobile Yacht Club and Mobile Country Club, which all have a touch of Arts and Crafts. This is a modern version of an Arts and Crafts with European influences.”
Robert Brown told us what the most rewarding part of working on this project was for him, “Seeing the finished project. This home is spectacular from every angle due to the design team that was assembled.”

Beautiful Homes of Instagram I can’t tell you how happy I am for sharing Molly’s, of @mk_interiors_, new home. I’ve known Molly and her beautiful work at MK Interiors for some time now. In fact, we have been talking about featuring her newly-built home even before it was built, so you can imagine how much I waited to share this post with all of you on Home Bunch. Keep reading and you will see why it was worth the wait to tour Molly’s home! “Hi, I’m Molly Kay and here is a little bit about me and our home! My husband is a general contractor who builds custom homes, does additions, and remodeling. He is also a master woodworker. Having him build our current home has been a blessing for us as he has built homes for several others and we had always hoped to have him build for us in the near future. We designed our home together and one of the highlights of my life is getting to work with my husband on projects. We each own separate businesses and have our own clients but sometimes we are hired as a team and we love that! We have been married 20 years and have 3 children. We live in the beautiful rolling hills at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains in Northern Virginia 45 minutes west of Washington DC. We love our rural small town and love living on a one lane gravel road on 5 acres. We also love being able to be close to a big city and really having the best of both worlds! I am passionate about interior design and love making all things beautiful! I feel so blessed to of always been able to stay home with my children and run a successful business as an interior designer. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of our custom home! It was a definite labor of love and still a work in progress!” Beautiful Homes of Instagram I didn’t have a covered porch in our last home so it’s something I really wanted in this one! This is just one side of the porch and this was taken shortly after we moved in before we painted the porch floor or took down the construction fence! Indoor/outdoor rug by Mohawk. Siding is Hardie Plank concrete siding by James Hardie in Night Gray. Foyer My entryway I kept simple but elegant with the grid board and batten paneled walls and crisp white paint. Foyer bench is from Joss & Main. Other inspiring options: here & here. Pillows are custom. Lighting I wanted my chandelier by Hinkley Lighting to take center stage! You should of seem the amount of scaffolding and people it took to hang it! It was love at very first sight for me! Grey Doors Interior door color for all of my interior doors in the entire house is a custom mix of Stardew, Uncertain Gray by Sherwin Williams with a little Wales Gray by Benjamin Moore. Entry set crystal doorknobs from Grandeur Hardware. Wall Paint Color Paint color is All White by Farrow & Ball. My grandmother’s desk from the 1940’s was made over by me with 2 tone Annie Sloan chalk paint in Paris Gray and Pure White and it fits perfectly there. Hardwood Floors Floors are Dream Home X20 laminate in Misty Morning Oak from Lumber Liquidators. Mirror The geometric frame and golden finish mirror is from Joss & Main. Dining Room Our dining area is open to the family room and kitchen. I did not want a separate room that no one would ever go in. I also chose not to have an eating area in the kitchen which is just steps away. I wanted this room to be where we ate and gathered unless we were at the island which has plenty of room for the 5 of us! I had my husband do more of the paneled wall boxes in here and kept them white for the time being knowing it would be easy down the road to paint that wall a color should I decide I want a change. Paint color is All White by Farrow & Ball. Crown Molding is Ultra Pure White by Behr. Table was purchased at an antique shop and is refinished in Annie Sloan chalk paint. French Linen and Pure White. Chairs were an antique store find about 16 years ago. I got 6 of them for $50! I had my husband take them apart and re-nail them to make sure they were sturdy. He then painted them and I reupholstered them. I want to get new chairs soon but these have been great for many many years and certainly worth well more than the price I paid! White cane end chairs were also an antique shop find and I painted them and reupholstered them. The pair for $20! Christmas sign by Signs of Hope. Chairs flanking sideboard from Restoration Hardware. Lighting My husband made the sideboard which used to be our media console in the old house. Chandelier by Hinkley Lighting from Lighting Design Company. Lamps by Horchow. Kitchen I could not be happier with how our kitchen turned out! I put less expensive materials in other places so that I could make sure to get the things I wanted in the kitchen. Because it is quite large, even when being very budget conscience with choices, it can quickly add up because you need so much! I definitely knew we couldn’t afford commercial appliances or very high end ones. I did a ton of research as we had a cut and dry number that I could not go above for all of our appliances in our house. I chose the Fridgidaire Gallery line and so far so good! We have an induction cooktop and I really love it. Kitchen Island & Hood Range Hood made my husband. He also made the island and did the same X detail on island ends, side of fridge, and built in doors in family room. Pendant lights by Golden Lighting. Island is 10 feet long by 4 feet wide. Countertop Counters are white Carrara marble which I knew I had to have even though they can get a bad reputation. I knew nothing else compared to the look of marble so I am fine with a little more maintenance. Sink & Faucet Sink is by Kohler. Faucet is American Standard. Pulls are Hickory Hardware. Backsplash Backsplash is Arabescato Carrara marble in a herringbone pattern. Counterstools Acrylic barstools by Gabby Home. Open Layout In our old house, the family room was separated from the kitchen by a wall that we couldn’t take down so another must have for this house we built was having the kitchen and family room together. Because of that design, it was important the 2 rooms flow and have same design elements. Family Room Sofa by Craftmaster – similar here. Rug by Nourison from the Kathy Ireland collection. Custom pillows by Cruel Mountain Designs. Built-ins The built-ins with x door detail and the shiplap backs were made by my husband and painted our house trim color: Ultra Pure White by Behr. Satin brass hardware can be found here. Chandelier by Crystorama designed by Libby Langdon. Brass swing arm sconces by Savoy House. Gold and glass table from Home Goods. Chairs White Chairs are from Lamps Plus. Ottomans Blue X leg ottomans from Joss and Main. Barn Door A grey barn door conceals a modern farmhouse-inspired mudroom. Mudroom I didn’t have a mudroom in our previous home that we lived in for 16 years so it was first on my list of needs for this home! I wanted the blue built-ins my husband made to really stand out so I kept the walls the same crisp white as the rest of the house. That paint color is All White by Farrow & Ball. I also wanted a fun patterned tile and I wanted durability so I chose a patterned porcelain tile by Merola that I bought from Wayfair. Chandelier by Hinkley Lighting. Satin Brass door knobs from Baldwin Hardware. Grey Doors: Custom mix of Stardew, Uncertain Gray by Sherwin Williams with a little Wales Gray by Benjamin Moore. Master Bedroom Our master bedroom is one the main level. It is part of a bump out in the rear of the house with amazing views. Our house is on 5 acres and we have beautiful fields, woods, and rolling hills all around us. We chose to put mainly windows on the whole back wall for this reason. I wanted a very bright airy room so I chose to use the crisp white paint in here. If you didn’t already know, I love white!! White walls make me happy and draw your attention to furniture pieces and art. We still need to add molding to this room as part of my design plan from the beginning but some things we just haven’t gotten to yet! Custom upholstered headboard from The Tufted Frog. Bedding from Linens and Hutch. End of bed leather bench from Joss & Main. White Tree from Joss & Main. Custom pillows from Cruel Mountain Designs. Table lamps from Home Goods. Brass chandelier from Lamps Plus – similar here. White fabric Roman shades from Blinds.com – similar here. Rug by Surya Rugs. Master Bath Our master bath is another space where I chose to scrimp on other bathrooms so that I could put the materials I wanted in here. We chose to pare down the size of the bathroom to allow for a larger closet for me which is through that pocket door. Again, my love for cool white and gray marble ruled all of my decisions. Floor is Carrara marble 12×24 tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. Counters are Mont Blanc marble and are 9 feet long. I used square undermount sinks. Wallpaper by York Wallcoverings. It’s a raised textured paper. Turkish towels by Olive and Linen. Chandelier by Artcraft Lighting. Details I wanted to use a mirror that covered the entire wall so I chose to have my sconces mounted to the mirror. Lucite and polished nickel sconces by Savoy House. Faucets are American Standard. Cabinet hardware in polished nickel from Amerock Hardware. Stool from Joss and Main. Shower Shower floor is Carrara marble hexagon tile and walls are Carrara 3×6 subway tile. Shower seat is a solid slab of Mont Blanc marble. Daughter’s Room My daughter is the only girl so we are all about making everything girly for her! The wallpaper in her room takes the focus so I wanted to leave her other 3 walls crisp white. I chose to do the ceiling in a blush pink – Intimate White by Sherwin Williams. It adds some fun to her ceiling. Her bed, nightstands, and bench are all french antiques. Bedding from Beddy’s. Pillows from Home Goods. Wallpaper by York Wallcoverings. Chandelier from Pottery Barn. 8×10 Rug from esale rugs. Same flooring upstairs as we have downstairs. Daughter’s Bathroom My only daughter gets the bedroom with the ensuite bathroom. Her counter is Quartzite. She also has the only bathtub in the house. I chose white 3×12 elongated subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern for her shower walls. Antique chair I painted the ceiling color – SW Intimate white (which oddly enough is a blush pink). Walls are like her room All White by Farrow & Ball. Floor tile is 12×24 tile from Home Depot. All cabinetry in the house from J&K Cabinetry. Shower curtain from Home Goods. Chandelier from Wayfair. Oldest Son’s room My oldest just so happened to get the largest of the kids’ rooms. In our last house, all of their bedrooms were about 10×10 so it is so amazing having so much space! His room is about 13×17. Lucky Kid! He also has the largest of the closets. I did gray painted walls in his room. Paint color is Seattle by Sherwin Williams. One wall is wallpapered in paper from MK Wallpaper designed by Jullian Harris. Bed, nightstand, and desk are all refinished antique shop finds. Gray braided chair from Lamp Plus. Leather butterfly chair from Home Goods. Task Lamp from Home Goods. Light fixture from Lighting Design Company. Tommy Hilfiger drapes from Home Goods. Middle Son’s Room The 8×10 rug by Mohawk. Bedding by Beddy’s. Light fixture from Lighting Design Company. Wood planked wall from Stikwood. Antique lockers are salvaged and bought at a flea market. Bed was also a flea market find and I repainted it. Wall color is Kentucky Haze by Benjamin Moore. Pillows by Summed Classics. Meet the Homeowers Make sure to follow Molly from @mk_interiors_ on Instagram and stop by her website to see more photos of her beautiful home! Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Classic Chicago Home Reno
Hello, my wonderful friends! How great it is to have you on the blog today. I am really excited to share this new beautiful home renovation by Edward Deegan Architects and Interiors. They are very talented and you guys always enjoy seeing their work whenever I feature it and I am sure it won’t be any different with this project. In fact, I must admit that I personally have been loving this project since I saw it on their Instagram and I got really excited when they sent it to me to share with all of you. Here, the designer has more details:
“Our goal for any remodel project is to create spaces that function and flow together better than before. We added some unique elements in the kitchen with the Walnut detail on the ends of the island and on the lip of the hood. We opted for a backsplash that was simple but still interesting. The dining room has a beautiful custom cabinet that holds all of their bar essentials. We kept the walls neutral and painted the trim the same color as the bar.”

Mudroom
How perfect is this mudroom? I tend to prefer mudroom lockers with doors to keep everything hidden and organized, but make sure to leave an open space for shoes or baskets under the bench, like we see above. This mudroom really covers everyone’s wishes and needs!

Bench: Vintage – similar here – Others: here, here, here, here, here & here.

“Sometimes less is more, we painted the cabinets, trim and walls all the same color in the mudroom.”
Walls & Cabinet Paint Color: “Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray”.
Flooring: 4×12 Slate Tile.
Many thanks to the architect & designers for sharing the details above.
