Halloween Spin on a Classic

One of the girls brought this wonderful rendition of The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat, formerly a Fly as many of us are more familiar. They enjoyed it so much I decided to make some coloring pages for them as well as our own Lady who could later EAT all of the ghostly nighttime creatures. The girls colored the coloring pages and cut them out. I have added a coloring page for the original story below in case you’d like to make your own craft. Instead of making a mobile, we simply attached our Old Lady to a solo cup using tape or glue (I used hot glue to be quick about it!) and placed our critters into the cup as she eats them in the story! Simple and keeps the story “alive” in their minds.

    Materials: 

Books: Copy of There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! by Lucille Colandro

Resource: Copy of Story Map graphic organizer

Coloring tools: Green map pencils or crayons. Librarian discretion.

    Instructional Procedures:

Librarian will have the students sit down for a read aloud.  Librarian will read the book There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! By Lucille Colandro.  As you are reading, you can emphasize that this book is for St. Patrick’s Day and how part of the culture is the use of tall tales in order convey the story.  As you finish the story, you can ask guiding questions about what they felt was the truth and what was exaggerated.  Next, break the students into groups and have them take one of the graphic organizers and a green coloring utensil. Students will work together to create their own tall tale or story using the beginning, middle, and end format. Students will also need to create a visual with their story using the green map pencil/crayon.  The librarian will emphasize school appropriate language and content.  When groups are finished, students will have time to share out their stories with the class or table groups.

    Suggested Instructional Strategies: 

You can have 3rd grade work solo on the assignment instead of partnering up.

You can make a contest out of this and have categories for most laughs, best exaggeration, and best visual.

      Assessment:  Students will turn in their story map to you or their teacher when they are finished.

Sensory Storytime: Let it Snow

This plan’s a bit shorter than I usually do, but I go back and forth between doing two or three books with this group, depending on the age range and the degree of wiggliness. 

Hello Song -- “We Clap and Sing Hello” 

Play Pretend -- fun snow day instructions from Sunflower Storytime

Book -- There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by Lucille Colandro

This series isn’t my favorite, but the anticipation of guessing what’s going to happen (her swallowing various things to build a snowman) is very fun.

Supplementary Activity -- I made a questionable cold lady using a print-out of her face and a large mason jar to put cotton balls into. If I was doing it again, I’d be more willing to vacuum and let them use handfuls of fake snow.

Song -- “If It’s Snowy and You Know It” [put on articles of clothes, shiver, throw a snowball, make a snow angel, etc.] 

Book -- Snow Sounds by David Johnson

If the stars align, this book will lead to perfect, somewhat hushed in-unison sound effects. Good for practicing listening. 

Song -- Let it Snow 

Well, the weather outside is frightful

but inside it’s so delightful 

so since there’s no place to go

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! 

Using just the first verse, I at first tossed a bunch of cotton balls into the air at the end, then had kids gather them up and let them throw them in the air as we repeated the song. 

Final Activity -- Tissue Dance 

A tissue dance is when you place a tissue on your head and try to dance without it falling off. Doing it with little kids is delightful chaos. I played Jim Gill’s Silly Dance Contest for this one. 

Sensory Activity -- Fake Snow 

This was one of my earlier Sensory Storytimes, so I had not yet gained the enthusiasm that I have now, so we did one sensory activity instead of every single thing that I can find on Pinterest that looks neat.
