Hello! Outside of Warden, who of your Rephaite characters would you get on the best and worst with, and why?

I think I’d get on best with Lucida and Pleione, who are the most chill of the Ranthen. Would not get on with Errai – a major snob – or with Thuban, who gets a kick out of torturing people.

Is there something about humans that Rephaims (maybe just Warden or Lucida, who look more open-minded) like or even envy?

That’s a very thoughtful question. 

I know this probably isn’t quite what you meant, but many of the Rephaim envy humans having a home. They don’t like Earth, but it is a functioning world that sustains life, and they’d love that back. That’s why Errai gets so irritated by the way humans treat Earth.

In terms of what they like about humans … alas, not much. Warden, however, loves our ability to build and create – the same ability Paige talks about to Nashira in The Song Rising (‘Through nothing but our ambition, and the freedom to create, we can turn a thought into a masterwork’). Our music, our art, our literature, our architecture, our languages – he finds the scope of it very impressive. Other Rephaim might feel the same, but they keep quiet about it. Lucida loves human dancing, for example, but wouldn’t dare say so within earshot of Errai.

What do the Ranthen we've met so far (Terebell, Lucida, Errai) think of Paige? It seems like they respect her well-enough, but aren't very enthused about having to work with any human.

Maybe spoilers kinda. 

Lucida likes Paige a lot, but feels a bit too embarrassed to stick up for her. (Lucida is from the final ‘wave’ of Rephaim before the Netherworld began rotting and was born into the war, so she feels she has less experience of humans than her fellow Ranthen.) They would be friends if Lucida got her confidence up. 

Pleione doesn’t really like or dislike Paige. 

Errai doesn’t like her one bit. Thinks she’s arrogant and doesn’t have enough respect for Rephaim. 

Alsafi liked her towards the end. He came to have great respect for her endurance and self-sacrifice, which he hasn’t often seen in humans. 

Terebell … well, I’d like to keep that one a mystery. 

All of them have gained a touch more respect for Paige since her torture in the Archon.

Was Lucida considered to accompany Paige to France, since she isn't as abrasive and is much more curious about humans, or did everyone just decide to give the job to Arcturus?

They all agreed Arcturus was the obvious candidate, given that Paige trusts him and feels comfortable with him in a way she doesn’t with the others. Lucida doesn’t have enough experience with humans, unfortunately, as she lived away from them in exile for a long time. Paige is fragile by the end of The Song Rising and needs someone she knows.

Can I just say that Lucida secretly really liking Paige is the cutest thing I've read on this blog. They would make such a cute, kick-ass female friendship. I feel like they would be complementary opposites, I really see them getting on. I hope Lucida eventually plucks up the courage to approach Paige! (I also have a sneaking suspicion that Terebell isn't as Paige-hating as she seems, but her Rephaite pride gets in the way of treating a human as an equal.)

ah! that's true they are all nuanced. with the rephs we've known so far in the books, if they could eat, what would their favorite flavors be? Errai would probably be one of those people who eats really spicy foods even tho they don't like them, just to prove a point (?)

Ha, definitely. Anything humans can do, Errai needs to prove that he can do better. 

Warden would be a bit of a foodie if he could eat. He’d love eating out at fancy restaurants.��And he would definitely cook. 

I feel like Terebell would have a lot of takeouts, though I have no idea quite why I think this. Lucida would Instagram all her meals.

Will we be seeing more of Lucida Sargas in future books? I’d be really interested to know more of her backstory. She seems less arrogant than the other Ranthen – would love for her to become a Reph friend or ally of Paige’s (or as much as a Rephiam can be). PS. Love your books.

Hello, Samantha. I was just wondering if you could clarify what Warden meant when he said Lucida wouldn't have starved herself for X amount of years without good reason? Did she not have aura out of protest? Also, what happens to a Reph if they don't feed? They are immortal after all.

Lucida decided to live in exile because she disagreed strongly with her family’s attempt to colonise Earth. When Rephaim go into exile, they have to live as scavengers, feeding on humans from the shadows. That was how Lucida lived. If she had remained with her cousin Nashira, she would have had as much aura as she liked, whenever she liked.

In TSR Lucida mentions she escaped the scarring other Ranthen suffered. How'd she manage that? Was she no in the penal colony? Or was she already in hiding.

She wasn’t in the colony at the time.

in TSR, when lucida and arcturus met the humans, did lucida know she was there at least partly to keep an eye on him and paige?

Lucida was told, in as many words, to monitor how he interacted with Paige and report back. She isn’t sure why.

Hello Samantha :) There is a scene in TSR where Paige remarks that Lucida Sargas now always seems be in Warden's shadow. Isn't that a subtle hint of Lucida's feelings towards Arcturus? Or is it just Paige's jealousy showing up?

It’s yours to interpret as you see fit, but I don’t personally see Paige as jealous in that scene. I had her make that comment to indicate that the Ranthen haven’t sent Warden alone to be with her in Edinburgh, indicating that they have some level of mistrust about their relationship.

I really find lucida an interesting character. Will we see more of her?

Yes.
