TWD OC's: "The Micro Group"

Alrighty, and aside from a couple of more who come in earlier in TWD timeline, these are my main OC's!

Seth and Lucas Wilburn - Brothers who were separated from their parents during the panic and chaos amid society's fall and ended up in a safe zone with the rest of the gang that eventually was destroyed. Although the youngest, Seth was designated to carry the medical supplies and often made himself useful by attempting to decipher first aid manuals and delivering a healthy dose of unsolicited snark. Lucas was of a less intellectual sort but he made up for it in street smarts particularly in favor of keeping his baby brother safe.

Maile and Benjamin Hardy - Engaged Masters degree students who met during their undergraduate years when he was planning on studying botany and she wanted to pursue environmental law. While Ben could be considered the brains, Maile was more so put in the position to be the brawn. Yet, both were kindhearted individuals more often than not.

Rob Kahnwald - Ex-military turned car mechanic and one of the older members of the group, often butting heads with nearly everyone over everything—especially Tom—but has made it his personal mission to ensure the safety of Seth and Lucas since being with them in their original safe zone. In contrast to the rest of the group, he's very rough around the edges and perhaps the most hardened by the collapse of humanity.

Jeanine Waverly - Showjumper and horse breeder formerly married to a celebrity film director, trying to recover from the abuse of her marriage, the following very public and messy divorce, and the end of civilization. If everyone stopped asking her where they'd seen her before and underestimating her ability to survive, it would be too soon.

Tom Nemoto - Electrician by day and community theatre actor by night who was near the end of a performance of Sweeney Todd when all hell broke loose. Arguably the most calm, quiet, and level-headed of the group which has put him apprehensively in the position of the group's leader (up until Rob challenges his decisions). More often than not, Jimena could be found trailing behind him or at his side.

Jimena Marciel - The newest member of the group who was rescued by Tom from a violent and hostile community that kept her in a basement. It wasn't until after a while that she began to open up to the rest of the folks in the group and even still has a lot of trauma to work through that she neglects in favor of being no more than arms-length away from Tom.

The Indiana House on Tuesday passed a bill providing state funding to train teachers who carry guns in classrooms after an emotional debate. School districts can already authorize the arming of teachers, but there isn’t a specific training curriculum — or much money — to go with it.

“This is just a standardized [training] format that the state will pay for,” author Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, said on the floor. He’s said the bill is a response to deadly mass shootings at schools across the country.

But Rep. Tonya Pfaff, D-Terre Haute — who has taught math for nearly three decades — said she worries the guns could be stolen or used in small disagreements. “School protection officers have jobs to protect the school, and I appreciate that,” she said on the floor. “They protect, I teach algebra. There’s no reason to switch.”

School corporations can get one matching grant annually from the Indiana Secured School Fund for their security programs. House Bill 1177 would allow an additional grant for specialized firearms instruction. The measure also would authorize state dollars for counseling services for students, teachers, school staff and employees in the event of a school shooting.

Lucas emphasized that participation would be voluntary for both school districts and individual staff members, and that districts could go above and beyond the proposed state program — as long as they paid for it. The program would involve 40 hours of training for firearm safety and use, based on the training law enforcement officials currently use.

Democrats pushed back, arguing that by encouraging participation in such programs, the bill would increase the number of guns in schools and the potential for violence. Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn, D-Fishers, said she thought a better solution was to “properly fund” school resource officers, rather than “arm teachers.”

Discussion from both parties went on for about 25 minutes. But Lucas maintained that the bill would ensure teachers who want to take up arms are properly trained. “This is not a guarantee. I can’t predict the future,” Lucas said. “The purpose of this bill is to provide those that want it [with] a tool to be able to make a last-ditch effort” to protect themselves and students.

House members passed the bill 71-24. All the no votes came from Democrats. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Workshop: Writing Personal Horror – 9:00pm to 11:00pm (Second Floor, Room 15): In order to write effective and original horror, you have to dig into your own psyche and find out what scares you. By focusing on your own personal fears and giving them shivery life on the page, you’ll be connecting to your audience – guaranteed. In this session, participants will learn techniques from instructor Tim Waggoner for drawing on their past, their presents, hopes, dreams, fears, obsessions, and current observations to create horror that stands out from the pack. Participants should bring something to write with/on. This is a ticketed event. Tickets are available for purchase at convention registration.

Congrats To The Grammys For Finally Getting Their Rock & Metal Category Figured Out

Following a pretty up-and-down rollercoaster ride the past few years, the Recording Academy has seemingly gotten their stuff together when it comes to their rock and metal categories.

After dealing with an embarrassing year last year where Avenged Sevenfold publically called out the prestigious institution for their lack of support to the metal community, apparently, someone at the Academy was paying attention as this year’s nominees might be one of their best in quite some time. 

For Best Metal Performance, the Grammys see a lot of new faces including Between The Buried And Me, Deafheaven, High On Fire and Trivium as well as scene staples Underoath (Underoath were previously nominated back in 2006 for Best Short Form Music Video).

As for Best Rock Performance, previous nominees like Arctic Monkeys, Cris Cornell (rest in peace) and Halestorm are accompanied by the likes of Greta Van Fleet and, surprisingly and well-deserved, FEVER 333.

Another fantastic nomination comes in the Best Rock Song category. Sandwiched between well-known household names like Ghost, Twenty One Pilots, and St. Vincent is Bring Me The Horizon and, for the second time, Greta Van Fleet. 

All in all, as much as we bash on award shows for their lack of support towards our hard rock and metal community, this year the Grammys got it right. Were there other artists that deserved a nomination? Of course there were. But considering how things have been in the past (Leonard Cohen Best Rock Performance 2018, Beyonce Best Rock Performance nominee 2017, Tenacious D Best Metal Performance 2015, etc.), we’ll take it.

‘Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures’ opens at the Museum of Modern Art. After its inaugural exhibitions, the newly renovated museum begins its rollout of new shows. Artist Talk and Book Signing: Rachel Feinstein at the Jewish Museum. In her first museum retrospective, the artist and fashion muse Rachel Feinstein presents fanciful works with a core of steel — a balance of the whimsical and the grotesque. 20th anniversary screening of ‘Love & Basketball’ at BAM Rose Cinemas. Sanaa Lathan, Omar Epps, and teenage hoop dreams: See Gina Prince-Bythewood’s 2000 classic on the big screen as part of the “Long Weekend of Love” series. ‘Jeffrey Gibson: When Fire Is Applied to a Stone It Cracks’ at the Brooklyn Museum. For this exhibition, the artist, who is of Choctaw and Cherokee descent, has selected items from the museum’s collection to be presented alongside his recent work. The result: a rethinking of institutional categorizations and representations of Indigenous peoples and Native American art. (Also on view: “Climate in Crisis: Environmental Change in the Indigenous Americas,” an exploration of the effects of climate change on Indigenous communities. ‘Countryside, The Future’ at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The museum turns over its rotunda to Rem Koolhaas’s long-awaited exhibition. ‘José Parlá: It’s Yours’ at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. For his first solo museum exhibition in New York City, Parlá presents new paintings that explore his connection to the Bronx. ‘Pioneering African-American Ballerinas’ at the Museum at FIT. ‘Intimate Apparel’ previews begin at Lincoln Center Theater. Lynn Nottage’s 2003 play has been adapted into a chamber opera, with music by Ricky Ian Gordon. Nottage wrote the libretto and Bartlett Sher is directing. Set in 1905 New York, the story follows an African-American seamstress who through letter writing courts a laborer working on the Panama Canal. ‘Brendan Fernandes: Contract and Release’ at the Noguchi Museum. A collaboration with the dance and visual artist Brendan Fernandes is the focus of Saturday programming at the museum this month.
