pathos - chapter 7 is up!
Tumblr media
Pairing: Lucanis/Rook de Riva AU: modern, ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Rating: explicit (for eventual smut)
Summary:
Rook has been skating with Viago for as long as she remembers, so when a nasty fall takes him off the ice for the foreseeable future, she figures that’s the end of her career as well. Viago has other plans for his little sister.  Meanwhile, Lucanis sees an opportunity to finally leave the sport altogether when Illario steals his partner away from him, leaving him alone just months shy of the new season. Retiring isn’t quite as easy as he’d hoped though, with Caterina Dellamorte as his coach.  Rook and Lucanis find each other in a reluctant alliance in the race to first place. But can that gold medal really buy off Rook’s guilt? And does Lucanis really want to quit skating when he’s finally finding his joy for the sport again?
Read chapter 7 on AO3 (In which Rook and Lucanis celebrate their win, and Viago also has a night.)

Note
Lucanis kisses Neves' fingertips, planting a trail of affection that he hopes blooms and warms her like the sun all the way up to her shoulder, nesting his face into the side of her neck.
She smells like the coffee he made for her still.
For a moment, the world isn't falling apart. Then, as he exhales and releases Neve, it is again. Treviso is Blighted. There's Spite there to keep him going.... and he releases her hand with a last kiss against her palm.
she doesn’t often entertain distractions, but he is the exception and not the rule. whenever her mind feels close to unraveling, whenever her restlessness courts foolish impulsivity, he is her tether.
it’s funny. she’s never been the type of person to need one; and maybe she doesn’t—need a tether, that is.
maybe she wants one.
ashur and tarquin have never made more sense to her than they do these days.
lucanis takes her writing hand, relieving it of its quill, and she closes her eyes. her mind lacks the romanticism that his possesses; she seeks no refuge in fantasy or fiction. instead, she focuses on his touch: a spark of fire skating over a lake of ice, which softens beneath its gentle flame.
as his face settles in the crook of her neck, she hums a soft sound of approval. neve reaches up to run her fingers through his hair, but just as quickly as he arrived, he slips through her fingers again.
she abandons her work and turns to him.
“do you want to go see them?” she asks, her hands lain to rest in her lap. “—to see home?” her voice is surprisingly gentle, though it distinctly lacks pity. there is only empathy there—understanding.
“i’m sure rook could spare us for a day or two.”

Finished it at last What do ya think @karinamay
I wanted to illustrate the end of there skate because it was such a gorgeous visual in my head when I read it, not really done comic panels before but I think I did ok.
I hope I did your Rook justice.

🌟Happy fic moment of the year🌟
Thank you for the tag @roguishcat <3
Share an excerpt from any fic of yours that you wrote this year, depicting a happy / fluffy / cute moment that you're proud of. Let's spread some joy for the last moments of the undeniably fucked-up year that was 2024.
I'm still very very early on in my Rook/Lucanis skating fic, but it will mostly be very soft, and I loved writing this very early cute moment for them:
“So, Lucanis,” Rook says then. “What do you do, besides skating?”
“What?” Lucanis asks, taken aback by the question.
Rook laughs. “No need to look so horrified. This is the ‘get to know each other’ week, remember? So tell me - how do you spend your time off the ice?”
“I - I don’t do a lot,” Lucanis answers. “Most of my life is skating.”
“Sure, so is mine. But we do have some free time. For example, tonight, I’m going to sit on my balcony and read a mystery. Sometimes, if I have leftover energy, I go swimming in the lake. Bad reality TV is one of my biggest guilty pleasures.”
Lucanis thinks for a moment. “I like to cook. I don’t usually have time for elaborate dishes, though. I like to read as well, and I watch a lot of movies. And… I knit.”
“You knit?”
“It’s calming.”
Rook grins. “That’s so soft.”
Lucanis feels the blood rushing to his cheeks, unsure what to say next. He looks down at his hands on the handlebars of his bicycle.
