Luai Ahmed at the United Nations Human Rights Council:
I ask the UN, the Arab League, and everyone who had waving the Palestinian flag since October 7:   Where is the flag of Yemen?   In my country, half a million people have died in the last 10 years. The biggest famine and humanitarian crisis in modern history. Why does no one care when half a million Yemenis die?   What about Sudan? In less than two years, more than 150,000 people have been killed. Where is the Sudanese flag? What about Syria? Half a million people were killed. Where is the Syrian flag?   High Commissioner, why is it that when Arabs kill millions of Arabs, no one bats an eye? Where is the outrage? Where are the protests? High Commissioner, may I ask why your report mentions Israel 188 times — yet fails to mention the Islamic Republic in Iran even once? How can you speak about the conflict while ignoring the party who armed, trained, and funded the terror proxies — Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis — who have been bombing Israel thousands of times?   Why don’t you mention that the Houthis in Yemen have spent millions of dollars firing missiles at Israel, instead of feeding my starving people?   And why is Qatar sitting here as a member of the Human Rights Council when they host the Hamas terror leaders in luxury hotels?

The Houthis Are Simply Insane
“They are an extremist religious group willing to sacrifice all of Yemen for the Palestinians and for the destruction of Israel, even though they’ve never met a Palestinian and don’t know anything about Israel.” These are the words of Sweden-based Yemeni activist Luai Ahmed. Read the interview with him at the Times of Israel. https://aqurette.com/diary/2024/12/27/the-houthis-are-simp

In April of 2024, Luai Ahmed asked an interesting question on Twitter.
Tumblr media
You protested and turned the world upside down when 30,000+ Palestinians died in the past 7 months. But remained completely silent when:
400,000 Yemenis were killed
500,000+ Sudanese were killed
500,000+ Somalis were killed
5,400,000+ Congolese were killed
etc.
Why?
If this question was put to #jumblr, I'd expect to see a large number of people saying things like "No Jews, no news," and I suspect that's the point Ahmed was hoping to make.
As an exercise in intellectual honesty, I'd like to take this question at face value (AuDHD here) and attempt to answer it.
For the purposes of this post, I'm going to assume Ahmed was asking this question of US campus protesters advocating for BDS policies towards Israel:
To the extent the US is involved in the wars listed in Ahmed's post, the US is, from the majority perspective, aligned with the "good guys."
The only thing the US could really withdraw from Yemen, Somalia, Congo, and Sudan is humanitarian aid and limited protection from religious extremists. Other than isolationists and nationalists, very few Americans support withdrawing aid to refugees in those countries.
For example, the US is not aligned with the armed Houthi aggressors in the Yemeni civil war and does not financially support them. Their slogan is:
God is the Greatest
Death to America
Death to Israel
A Curse Upon the Jews
Victory to Islam
The US is the largest contributor of humanitarian aid in Yemen. There is little, if any, university involvement in the conflict in Yemen. Any increased support for the Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government is fraught.
The US is aligned with AMISOM and the UN in Somalia to provide humanitarian aid to civilians and refugees with over a billion dollars aimed at flood, drought, and famine relief. The US has also made many targeted air strikes against groups like of al-Shabaab, Islamic State and the remnants of Al Qaeda. (Unfortunately, these airstrikes have reportedly resulted in at least 21 non-combatant civilian deaths and 11 injuries.)
The US is the largest source of humanitarian aid in Sudan and funds 80% of the World Food Program. It supports neither side in the war and has undertaken specific measures to promote accountability for the actions committed by the two forces, including imposing visa restrictions and levying economic sanctions against leadership. There is nothing which divestment would accomplish other than hastening starvation and depriving people of shelter and medical aid.
In Congo…that’s a mind-boggling catastrophic miscarriage of colonialism and the Cold War the dimensions of which no one can distill into a slogan or policy position. There is probably nothing and no faction in the Congolese war that protests in the US directed at universities or government entities could effectively support or pressure. What would student protestors be calling for the US to do?
So it makes sense to me why US activists would get involved the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but not these other conflicts.
I appreciate Ahmed's determination to fight antisemitism, but I don't think he's making a particularly good point here.
I object to protestors using falsehoods, disinformation, ignorance, Jewish cosplay, or antisemitic tropes in their protesting - but I don't think their protests are fundamentally illegitimate. They might be wrong, they might be foolish, but not in the way Ahmed seems to suggest.

Nearly 7 in 10 young Emirati men overweight, obese: Study
Tumblr media
Thousands of young Emirati men are already overweight or obese at age 18, according to a new study. It said obesity rose so drastically that by the age of 29, only 29 per cent were in the normal body mass index (BMI) range. Findings from a study of over 33,000 young men - conducted between May 2015 and February 2017 - showed the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factor in men aged between 18 and 29 years. The research, which was one of the largest UAE population studies, found elevated levels of triglycerides and cholesterol, impaired fasting glucose, and hypertension. "The data obtained in this study paint a worrying picture of the state of health of young Emirati men. Over one in four of them are obese, and this is likely to contribute towards the emergence of diabetes and hypertension in these individuals," said the lead author of the study, professor Ashraf Hasan Humaidan Alzaabi of the Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi. There was also a high prevalence of diabetes (4.7 per cent), and 41 per cent of subjects had impaired fasting blood glucose - an indicator for prediabetes. Overall, 62 per cent of the study subjects presented at least one cardiometabolic risk factor such as high BMI, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure. Rising prevalence The region is known to have one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes and obesity worldwide according to international reports, and rates are continuing to rise. There are over one million people living with diabetes in the UAE, placing the country 15th worldwide for age-adjusted comparative prevalence. Increases in prevalence have developed due to unhealthy dietary changes and sedentary lifestyles, although there are possible hereditary factors that could influence outcomes, said doctors. UAE patients who had a high BMI were more likely to present multiple cardiometabolic risk factors and to have hypertension. Alarmingly, around one in four subjects presented with more than one cardiometabolic risk factor. These trends are not limited to nationals, as other recent studies have reported similarly high rates of obesity and diabetes among expatriates residing in the UAE. When comparing with similar global population studies, the prevalence rates observed in the UAE were two-fold higher than those seen in Western Europe, which reported less than two per cent for diabetes, less than 15 per cent for obesity and less than eight per cent for hypertension. Similarly, the most recent study from the US found that the prevalence of diabetes in individuals aged between 20 and 44 was 3.3 per cent. Overall, the UAE ranked highest in diabetes (4.7 per cent) and hypertension, and came in very close second to the US for obesity. "Our findings underline the serious nature of cardiometabolic risk factors and associated disease in this region. At age 18, 42 per cent of study subjects were in the normal BMI range, but this drastically decreased to only 29 per cent at age 29. These shocking figures make us ask the difficult question of what happens during this critical timeframe to make the majority of young UAE men overweight or obese," said professor Alzaabi, who is also the head of respiratory division at the Zayed Military Hospital. "We must look at these critical 10 years closely and evaluate ways we can support almost 70 per cent of 29-year-olds who are overweight or obese," he said. For health authorities to meet the challenges associated with the increase in cardiometabolic risk factors in the country, continued surveillance and stronger awareness drives are necessary, the professor added. "Public health initiatives are required to address these prevalence levels and anticipate the future burden for which these men are at risk. This must be tackled with a multidisciplinary approach through national public health initiatives, factoring in health education, access to sports facilities, and initiatives to encourage healthy eating," said Alzaabi. The research team also included Professor Juma Al Kaabi from the Department of Internal Medicine of the United Arab Emirates University Al Ain; Professor Fatma Al Maskari from the Institute of Public Health and Zayed Centre for Health Sciences, UAE University; Dr Ahmed Faisal Farhood from Zayed Military Hospital; and Dr Luai A Ahmed from the Institute of Public Health, UAE University.
