As their ensorceled Maneki-neko Lucky Cat statues that randomly turned non-Chinese people into Chinese versions of themselves made it around the world (Note: the Maneki-neko is a very Japanese item, which is why using it so amused these rogue wizards, they being after all rogue Tao chaos wizards, with at least a third of the little items being shipped to shops in Japan.) Anyway there were some interesting reactions to their little trick.
Tumblr media
Such as what happened to Jean Sue Bolton of Birmingham, Alabama when on a visit to the Boston, Massachusetts Chinatown she sat between two glowing Lightning Lucky Cats.
At first shocked and bewildered to find she was now someone named Bao Jing Shui, she was however someone who always landed on her feet, and knew just what she wanted and went after it.
Tumblr media
First of all, she insisted that everyone call by her original first and middle names, “I’ll leave the surname alone but I’m Bao Jean Sue thank you very much!.
Next, being a very family oriented person, she bought up all the Lightning Lucky Cats that came from the same place where her two had come from and shipped them out to people she cared about.
It was not long before Jean Sue was making regular trips to the airport.
Tumblr media
First there was her Mother Jennifer, Father Sam and her younger sister Penny.
Whom after becoming Bao Xiu ying, Bao Jai fu and Bao Yī Fēn Qián (Mandarin for penny) where more than a tad confused.
Tumblr media
Next to show up were her older brother who was now Bao Chou Lu, and his wife Zin and their baby daughter JingJing.
Tumblr media
Not all, however, were confused or upset; Jean’s favorite Aunt Fanny found it quite a delight and adventure to find she was now Jing’s… sorry, Jean’s, Ayi (aunt) Fang Ting.
In fact, Ayi Fang asked Jean if it was possible to recharge the cute little thing because she wanted to see if she could convert her Saturday night poker game with the girls to Mahjong.
Tumblr media
Then Jean got a call, in Mandarin accented English, from her best friend Wendy Patton, who was now Peng Wu Xinya. Jean said that she could explain things better if she would come to the Boston Chinatown. But Wu Xinya insisted Jean come to her apartment in Birmingham.
So Jean went “so why did you need me to come here? It will be easier to get things settled out and settled in, in Boston.”
“Yeah?” said Wu Xinya, “then explain that to my boyfriend Melvin there!”
Tumblr media
Turning around Jean saw that Wendy’s boyfriend Melvin Filipowicz had been in her apartment when the Cat went off, and while close enough to be effected, he was far enough away that it only partially took effect and in a vary particular way.
“Yes!” said Melvin Filipowicz “Explain this!”
"ahhh?" said Jean "Makeover time? I'll pay."

All the Things We’ll Leave Behind: ch 36, pt 1
Back to jzxuan's perspective for a short bit
Previously
~
“Don’t you dare let me win,” jzxuan practically growled at lwj. He hadn’t meant for it to come out so aggressive, but even he had to admit, the competition was getting to him—and not in the bad way.
He actually hadn’t had this much fun in a physical event in years. Whoever had decided to bolster their numbers with the locals had known what they were doing… maybe. Honestly, if it was his aunt who had decided to include them, she probably hadn’t intended for them to lighten the mood of the day. That said, he was pretty sure it had actually been his mother’s suggestion, and she certainly would have been aiming to make the event more enjoyable.
Probably.
Maybe.
Sometimes, he wasn’t sure he knew his mother anymore. It wasn’t that she was different than she’d been when he was younger, but she’d certainly mellowed in the years since his half-siblings had begun to pop up, and even more so in the last year—since jgy had told them about his relationship with lxc and nmj.
jzxuan, and the majority of their direct family—save their ever absent father—had already known. Truly, for someone who was generally so observant, he had no idea how his half-brother had missed the fact that everyone close to him already knew what was going on in his personal life.
mxy had yet to let their older brother live that ignorance down, and he was pretty sure their sister had given the thruple an embarrassing anniversary gift—anniversary of the day she had figured it out, months before they had formally been told. jgy had chased her through the house for almost an hour while nmj laughed and lxc had mysteriously disappeared after smiling placidly into space for an eerie amount of time.
Being a grandmother suited his mother, though, and while he had been at school and rarely seen his kinda-sorta nephew, his mother had taken to babysitting the boy. Despite the fact that he’d been sent pictures of them together regularly, even he hadn’t realized how much she had been watching him, and seeing JingJing reach for her earlier…
jzxuan’s heart clenched as he tightened his grip. They really should have avoided this challenge, but it had been the only one with space after they finished the group challenge in record time—not that their unofficial time would count for anything outside of anecdotes—and neither he nor lwj had been inclined to wait around for the current rounds of other events to end. Not only did this challenge suck, however, but they'd also been followed by his cousin’s team—the locals, being stronger swimmers, had made their way to the only other free challenge, filling it up. This had resulted in jzxun yelling profanities after them about “respecting their betters.”
jzxuan had rolled his eyes while lwj had ignored the man in favour of watching Lu Ming. jzxuan wasn’t sure what his friend-with-benefit’s fascination with the man was, and for a brief moment, he had felt insanely jealous that lwj’s attention wasn’t focused solely on him. Then, lwj had caught the bitter scent leaking out of him, and turned to meet his eyes instead, one eyebrow crooked and jzxuan had wanted to die.

Weekend
Which is fair. Kurang membanggakan apa. Hasil dari “pekerjaan tetap” mereka ini terlalu real untuk di-deny, jadinya ya mereka merasa “that’s the best way to live your life”. Celakanya, anaknya disekolahin di sekolah bagus dan jadi bisa mikir independently: “I can live the way I want, wong aku punya skill kok yang di-demand di mana-mana” dan gamau settle down. Nb: itulah teman-teman, kalau mau growing sesuatu, jangan terlalu bagus dan besar, nanti bisa kabur yang di-grow itu (ku habis baca meme di twt, inilah cara SM membesarkan artisnya: “to be big, but not too big so they can fight you back” lol).
Terus tapi ya sangat relaxing sih emang ketemu orang dan ngobrol tuh. Bikin kita jadi mikir juga aja. Dan reflect back.
Jalan dari Castle Mill ke stasiun to catch a bus buat ke Cowley only to papasan sama Hanif dan Mas Yusuf. Di Seoul Plaza ketemu Mba Rahma yang lagi last day and got ma sambal ABC extra pedas (too spicy for me sayangnya), after dikasih kue bolu pandan juga HUHU sangat baik. Ku juga dikabarin Dwi later on bahwa she saw me pas lagi jalan ke JingJing, in her words: “Gw ngeliat lu jalan di cowley road kmrin sore with headphone on sambal ngunyah>< we were calling you from across the street but you didn’t hear wkwkwkw”… well, from that description, that sounded like me… Definitely me lol. Kalian kalau tinggal di satu small city (seperti Oxford) denganku akan sangat sering menemukanku in that kinda situation dan semoga tidak marah kalau ku ga dengar karena beneran itu headphone pasti lagi full blasting The Weeknd (sekarang lagi dengerin album Starboy full lagi, sangat bagus). Atau ya Stray Kids, atau Chase Atlantic. OH! Kalau lagi beruntung, you’ll catch me while listening to more no-bass, calmer songs of previously mentioned artists, and so I can hear you… but the chances are slim…
Dari JingJing I walked to the city to Blackwell’s karena awalnya mau nyari buku dan kehabisan bacaan di rumah. Nggak sih, masih banyak buku buat dibaca di rumah, tapi pengen aja getting myself a new one, only to figure out BUKU SEKARANG MAHAL BANGET??? Dari situ ke WHSmith to get a watercolor and acrylic paper pad. Terus ke Ryman buat beli wadah bumbu-bumbu. Cuma £1 lho, lagi ada deal gitu. Terus ke Endorphins to buy a cake + coffee half price, and plannya ya mau have a me-time aja gitu baca buku (ada buku-buku seru di Endorphins lantai 2, mostly uncorrected proof copy gitu, salah satunya adalah si Arrangements in Blue-nya Amy Key yang lagi kubaca sekarang). Eh terus tiba-tiba Hanif nyusul. Ya gapapa sih I don’t mind juga having a friend to talk to. Dari situ kami makan ke Banana Tree, I had the usual Banana Tree Spiced Noodles with Iced Lemon Tea. Dari situ Hanif ada ketemu orang lain and I went to Tesco to get soymilk, flowers, and some other things.
Sampe rumah, my flatmate belum pulang kan, tapi ada teman lain yang ingin mengungsi dulu for sementara waktu. So she came after I reached home. But si teman yang mengungsi ini does her PhD in VERY DIFFERENT field from mine (she works on social humanity), so we talked. We talked SO MUCH that night. Tapi seru banget sih. I learned SO MANY things. Mostly on how the data on field is VERY DIFFERENT from the numbers that are in the paper, and if your job is to make public policy/regulations and you never go to the field? You are basically fucked. Which makes sense juga kenapa regulasi kita di Indo shitty, ya karena orang yang bikin regulasi bikin asumsinya dari papers aja, nggak based on field data/evidence in the field. I honestly don’t give a shit) Perpres, UU, Perda, gitu-gitu lah ya.
Terus hari Minggu-nya I already have planned not to go out juga anyway. Hhhhh. Ku juga jadi download buku baru ngecek di Bodleian ada soft-copy-nya judulnya “The Joy of Science”. Ku udh berhasil baca sampai chapter 3 as of now. Kalau beli, it will cost me £13… Jam 7-an my flatmate was back from her trip, BAWA BANYAK MAKANAN JUGA OMG. Terus yaudah lanjut ngobrol lagi sambil nonton Kim’s Convenience. Well, nggak menggosip sih, tapi ngomongin particular person that we knew/have met aja and I was so glad that I am not the only one that doesn’t like this person. Karena emang orangnya aneh aja. Lalu tidur.

Hi! A follow up to your Wen Zhuliu and the assassins' biographies and 知己 posts (which were great!) - It got me thinking about the relationship between Yu Ziyuan and her maid/assassins Yinzhu and Jinzhu, especially the line about how they had never served anyone else and were no ordinary servants. No question here, but your post made me think about them a little more, and wonder whether that might apply to them. It is a fun headcanon, at least, given that we really know so little!
(follow-up to this post about Wen Zhuliu and assassin literature)
oh! it’s funny you should mention that, because I remember watching episode 15 and, when I saw Jinzhu and Yinzhu in action, I was a little shook because I got mad 聂隐娘 vibes from them
Tumblr media
so who do I have to pay for an all-ladies encore of CQL
Nie Yinniang is a peculiar but evocative Tang Dynasty 传奇 chuanqi story (often translated as ‘legend’ or ‘tale of the marvelous’), found in the 《太平广记》Taipingguangji. There’s a lot of plot and political machinations packed into the 1400 characters of her legend, but the tl;dr is that Nie Yinniang is the daughter of a general who gets kidnapped by a nun. Said nun spirits Nie Yinniang away to an unknown but vaguely mystical place, where she is trained in the brutal art of assassination, and five years later, gets dropped her off at like nothing had happened. Her father simultaneously dotes on her and is terrified by her because, hello, assassin. A random mirror-grinding youth walks by one day, and she takes one look at him and says “oh I could marry that one” and what’s her father going to do? Deny his half-feral assassin daughter?
They get married. Anyway. Her story’s wild, and that’s just the beginning. Hou Hsiao-hsien made a movie about her, 刺客聂隐娘, which I stg I tried to watch but noped out of because I couldn’t understand the dialogue (which was simultaneously speedy and 文言 and I was just like... please... some mercy here...). Living legend Ken Liu also borrows heavily from the Nie Yinniang mythos in his short story “The Hidden Girl,” which, incidentally, is the name of his newest short story collection!
Oh goodness I’m getting distracted. WHAT I’M TRYING TO SAY is that there are two other badass lady assassins in the Nie Yinniang story, 空空儿 Kongkong-er and 精精儿 Jingjing-er (for those of you more familiar with the source story, I’m choosing to read 空空儿 and 精精儿 as the two girls in the line “已有二女,亦各十歲,皆聰明婉麗不食。能於峭壁上飛走,若捷猱登木,無有蹶失” because... narrative Occam’s Razor?). Nie Yinniang ends up going toe-to-toe with the two of them in order to protect an official she decided she liked better than her former employer, and the whole fight between Nie Yinniang and her former assassin-sisters is blanketed in a great deal of mystery and magic. After Nie Yinniang fends off Jingjing-er (by... dissolving her into water? unclear), she says:
隱娘曰: 後夜當使妙手空空兒繼至。空空兒之神術,人莫能窺其用,鬼莫得躡其蹤。能從空虛之入冥,善無形而滅影...
Yinniang said, “Later in the night, [he] will of course send dextrous Kongkong-er to continue [the assassination] to its finish. As for the magical skills of Kongkong-er, its use cannot be seen by people, its footsteps cannot be trodden by ghosts. She can descend into darkness from emptiness and hollowness, excels at formlessness and exterminating shadows...”
(five minute translation, text pulled from ctext)
Which, considered in context of Jinzhu and Yinzhu’s fight scene in episode 15?
Tumblr media
on one hand I’m mad because I can’t see the choreography because they’re blurring, but on the other hand... well played, CQL production team, well played
definitely resonates a lot with Kongkong-er and Jingjing-er from the Nie Yinniang story.
I can’t speak to whether this was a deliberate allusion made by the CQL team (since it feels a lot like the fun 福禄寿 Fu Lu Shou resonances in that other meta), but it’s certainly fun to think about!

The theme of MondayOFF Issue#2 is Medical Cosmetology, which explores what beauty is from the contemporary perspective of “becoming beautiful” with an anthropological eye. We start from the following questions - Is there such a thing as standard beauty? Could we understand that medical cosmetology is a sign that beauty is becoming more of a medical element, evolving beyond its traditional definition, and the two-dimensional discussions about it? Are artists still the creators of beauty, or has this right been given to the invisible hands? Our cities are permeated with countless plastic surgery advertisements and social-influencer-driven economy, #MedicalCosmetology also investigates the drive for city girls’ happy yet painful pursuit of beauty, the undercurrents of the awakening of feminism, and consumer-driven economy based on our looks. Together with us, you can raise questions towards the human flesh, those who live in the filters, under the 3D scans, and those who receive diagnosis from AI doctors. In a way, aesthetics is breaking free from a hierarchy. Face, which was regarded as a single sign of our individual uniqueness is now fading away. We are becoming a constantly changing and beautifying community.
Welcome to this world of aesthetics brought to you by MondayOFF, where it is filled with flexibilities, colors, transformations, alienations, and resilience.

LU JINGYI, 19
Tumblr media
ALSO KNOWN as MR. YES ( or jingjing to make him more effeminate ) because he has a hard time saying NO to people, even if he’s uncomfortable or upset with requests he’s given. because of his incapability to say NO to anyone, he gets picked on and teased for it and he takes it with a smile and a nod. due to his meek nature and inability to say no, he’s a victim of choice by many of his classmates, disguised as being his friends, they make him do a lot of things ( and often just for laughs ).
HIS FAMILY life isn’t any better...his parents are lost in their own world, not seeing the fact that his sisters ( he has two ) pick on him and take advantage of him. pushing him around and making fun of him, somewhat bordering abuse. one could describe him to be CINDERELLA, with two evil step-sisters and almost absent parents.
HE BELIEVES that if he doesn’t say YES to what people want, they won’t like him...he has no idea how to say NO or fight / defend himself against his bullies. he just tries to power through with a smile, despite the physical / mental / emotional pain he undergoes.
JINGYI STUDIES culinary arts, specifically confections and more so cakes. he has sketchbooks filled with cake designs he wants to bring to life but is never given a chance to bring it to life.

Association between serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and obesity in one‐year‐old Chinese infants
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were significantly lower in obese infants than their counterparts. Vitamin D levels < 50 nmol/L may be a risk factor for infantile obesity.
Abstract
Recent studies suggested that vitamin D is linked with obesity, but evidence in infants is scarce. Therefore, we aimed to make an exploration in infants. A total of 414 infants at one year old who visited Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital of Wuxi in China were recruited. Finger‐stick blood sampling was conducted in all the subjects, and serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were measured. Maternal characteristics during pregnancy and infantile information were collected by questionnaires or extracting from medical records. Multivariable linear models were performed to assess the relationship between 25(OH)D and body mass index (BMI), while multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between 25(OH)D and obesity. Among the 414 infants, 69 (16.67%) and 81 (19.57%) infants were defined as obesity and vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L], respectively. The mean (SD) of 25(OH)D concentration was 68.05 (19.05) in infants without obesity, which was significantly higher than that of obese infants [60.36(18.49), p = .002]. Inverse linear relationships were observed between 25(OH)D level and BMI (β = −0.017, p = .004) as well as BMI Z‐score (β = −0.010, p = .004). Furthermore, vitamin D deficiency was associated with an increased risk of obesity of infants (adjusted odds ratio = 2.74, 95% confidence interval = 1.20–6.25, with 25(OH)D ≥ 75 nmol/L as a reference). The results showed that serum 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly lower in infants with obesity, suggesting vitamin D deficiency may be an independent risk factor for obesity among one‐year‐old Chinese infants.
