me and mentally unwell fictional characters put in stress inducing situations who became angry at the world because of them (bonus point if they're viewed as inadequate by other people who dont understand the position theyre being put in)

After finishing the survey for Piazzi IV-C, we decided to do a quick scan of Piazzi IV itself, a gas giant and easy money. Except that we jumped into a Crimson Fleet meetup. Five ships!
We were hopelessly outnumbered, so jumped to Altair II. And wouldn't you know, as soon as we were in-system we received a distress call from a Private Mahoney with the Freestar Collective (FC).
I'm not one to ignore distress calls. At some point I'm going to need the help and hope that some rando comes to my defense. So I take my good little self down to a research outpost on Altair II.
Right away I can see this is a problem. Spacers running around everywhere. I leave Sarah and Barrett (and Cora) to defend the ship while Sam and I see what we can do.
Cleared the outside and started a standard walkthrough/cleanup inside and found Private Mahoney in a closet. She gave us and overview of the situation and apparently UC Marines are here as well, pinned down somewhere.
Sam and I just kind of look at each other. So FC troops and UC Marines need two nobodies to bail them out? That doesn't say much for our military organizations, does it?
But that kind of thinking doesn't solve the situation. Our first stop was to find and secure where Corporal Lezama and the wounded are holed up.
They were hit pretty bad, but Lezama, who is UC, was calm and gave us directions and security key cards to find the Lieutenant. Boy was he surprised when Sam and I showed up after killing about nine spacers in the hallway. Wanted to know where the rest of our troops were, snipers, etc.
I just rolled my eyes and asked him to get on with it. The Lieutenant is trying hard, but this is obviously his first difficult mission. We took point and went out to find and relieve the UC commander.
That commander was Captain Meyong. Yup, THAT Captain Meyong. I was slightly star-struck, but then realized Sam and I'd saved her bacon, so that set matters straight. We did a quick strategy session.
The Lieutenant had split his troops and sent some to a research outpost. They also were under attack, so while Meyong and Torres secured this facility, Sam I headed to check on the outpost.
The outpost had two survivors, a FC private and a scientist, but the private said more scientists had holed up in a cave nearby. We took out the six spacers pretty easily. Pro tip: get the high ground, like up on top of a hab. You can pick them off, but still get down low to avoid returned fire.
So back to the base. I'd better be getting fuel money outta this.
The FC and UC were getting the research station locked down, but the main problem were Spacer ships around Altair V and Altair I. Since nobody else seems to have a ship (how the fuck did they get here? Does FC militia and UC just drop off their men and leave?) Sam and I get to go take out their ships.
This will be the first test for the Litany. We'll see how she does.
-----
Three ships at Altair I and three ships at Altair V. Managed to get them all, but sustained some damage. Also the Litany handles like a brick. Getting her to turn is like manhandling a cruddup.
Unfortunately the Spacers have a death wish and despite losing six ships and their ground forces have doubled down on attacking the research station. Looks like another firefight on the agenda!
-----
Well, at least a dozen Spacers at the base. Sam and I took them out. Not sure where the FC and UC were. Hiding inside I guess. Then two more ships came down and dropped off twelve more spacers. Sam and I picked them off easily. Again, high ground. We shot them like rats as they can down the slope into the base.
Got some thanks and a nice Peacekeeper from Captain Meyong. I'm a little worried about Lt. Torres. I think he might need some time on a comfy couch with a psychotherapist. The Captain gave him some good advice, but when I left he was a little shellshocked at the body count.
Now, why were we at Altair? Oh, right, escaping Crimson Fleet. Well, as long as we're here we might as well do the planetary surveys. There's also a research tower near the camp I'd like to check out and an Industrial outpost that ought to know about the Spacer issue.
Being a good, responsible citizen is a pain in the ass, you know?

What is this blog for?
This is my main simblr where i just post my sims and reblog others’ sims/lookbooks etc. For mod and cc finds, check out my sideblog.
Will you ever upload your cc folder?
Hell naw. You tryna get me in trouble?? Wowwww that’s crazy.
But fr, i have 350+ gb of cc and mods, about 50k files. I would rather die than try to upload all those files. Also it’s against alot of creators’ tou to reupload their content and ion want no problems. Sorry boo
What cc do you use?
Baby i use everything. Its so hard to answer this bc i use….HELLA cc. So, refer to my masterlist, lookbooks, patreon and resource posts where i link the cc i use! You can find all of these linked in my navigation post pinned on my profile. (Masterlists and resources coming very soon)
Where can i download your sims?
I upload them free on patreon <3
How do i download your sims?
On my patreon, i have a step-by-step walkthrough on each post. If you still have trouble, watch this tutorial before sending me an ask! It seems complicated but i promise it isn’t.
How do you get your sims to look that nice?
A combination of srwe, gshade, and cas lighting mods (linked in resources post) My favorite gshade preset is A Little Sweet Life by WakaWakaOngOng
Why don’t my sims look like yours?
My sims will look different than yours because it’s like art, we all have our own particular style. Also, you may have different sliders, lighting mods or skin details than i do. If you feel like your sims are funny looking, just keep making them. If you wanna get better at anything, you practice. They’ll get cuter and cuter. My sims used to be fugly n boring okay! Trust the process
Can i use your sims for my gameplay?
Yes! Just please don’t claim them as your own and give credit when it is due. That would be really sucky to claim them as yours, and trust me i know one of my sims when i see em lol. All i ask is that you tag me when you use them bc it would make me so happy to see other ppl use them.
Where can i reach you or talk to you!
I'm most active on twitter right now, but i also post semi often on tiktok. If you need to send me a message, tumblr or twitter is best. Here’s my linktree with all my social media. Come say what’s up!

Finally beat a game that's been an enigma to me since childhood. Glad I finally looked up a walkthrough for the parts where I was stuck, I never would have guessed the actual mechanics I was missing. It's nice, and I needed the win tonight, but I feel weirdly numb after staying up so late for it, and needing such a big hint. Feels anticlimactic after so many years.
What I'm looking forward to is trying the harder difficulties, now that I actually understand the rules of Iron Helix, since all the DNA and clue locations are different, and I'm guessing there's some number tweaks to make the defender faster or your energy drain worse. I want a fair chance to crack this on my own merits.
If for some reason you're playing Iron Helix 30 years after its release, here's the trick that gets you to Phase 2 (without heavy spoilers): you need to specifically be carrying the DNA of the commander, lt. commander, and weapons guy. The game never says you need that specific combo, but you do! And then magically you can finally watch the video messages on all those data ports. There are other poorly explained rules but you can probably figure it out from there.

Rust Compiler Performance Triage
Our build pipeline got sped up by PR #112012, which side-steps one of the rustc rebuilds we were suffering with before. (There is further potential speed-up by caching LLVM, as noted by on that PR.) Other than that, various small regressions that are largely noise, as well as one unexpected increase in binary sizes from PR #109005 that we should follow up on.
Triage done by @pnkfelix. Revision range: adc719d7..4bd4e2ea

Minor Disco Elysium spoilers ahead:
Some responses so far:
Tumblr media
I, for one, was slightly spoiled. I had heard of the game, knew something about the skills, and had seen the opening scene.
I actually wasn’t planning on playing the game at all and was just going to watch a walkthrough. I saw the first encounter with Klaasje, and that somehow didn’t get my attention.
Then I just. Kept. Hearing about it. DE is pretty hard to avoid in some online spaces. I started to feel like I was missing something.
I heard about the dance scene. I didn’t know exactly what happened, but people kept bringing it up as the best part of the game. They said they couldn’t get over it.
I just had to know.
Last year, I finally played it for myself. I was mostly unspoiled, but I feel like I had to know something about it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known it was special.
In short:
Klaasje pretty
Owe my life to speedfreaks, Soona, and Dolores Dei
Also Lt. Kim Kitsuragi, but that’s no surprise
10/10 would dance again
Okay, let's do a poll. Did you know anything about Disco Elysium before you played it? Do you think playing blindly (or not) affected your experience?
PLEASE expand in the tags/comments. I'm so curious.

This post underneath OP's LT icon makes me really want to read a text walkthrough of HWBM extremely earnestly written as if the game requires skill instead of picking one of two choices once per mission.... Coach me on when's the right time to switch my ammo to Conceptual, provide pointers on how not to fumble the romance options, a step-by-step on pulling off a frame-perfect takedown of that stupid drone that I can never get past the second health bar,,,
istg we need more text based game guides like guh... a gamefaqs elden ring guide would go SO hard AUGH and I DONT want to use any article mills like ign or video guides

Jason Kolchek - Always Royal #1
Tumblr media
Jason Kolchek x Reader
genre: angst
warning: cursing words (PLENTY), gun, bleeding, death, violence, mention of drug use, the Iraq war and 9/11
words: 3.2k

This is my walkthrough of the game, and yes, my main character survived with the best ending! Spoiler alert + I cut some scenes bc I needed to focus on Jason and the reader's relationship. Remember, this is entirely my choice. Enjoy!

Y/N Y/L/N (CIR.1970)
COL. USMC
ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴀɴᴅɪɴɢ
ɪᴍᴘᴀʀᴛɪᴀʟ
"Where's Rachel King?"
"Please come this way, ma'am."
Y/N nods and walks in a straight line, notices Clarice preparing the presentation, then sees both King couples conversing, if somewhat not going well.
"You guys ready?" Y/N walks into the hall, capturing the attention; All solely she cares about is her command. "Colonel. USMC, Y/L/N; here to assist Lt. Col. King on a CENTCOM and SOCC's urgent result needed assignment. I'll give you a few moments. Is the presentation ready, Dr. Stokes?"
"Five minutes, ma'am." Clarice raises her head to look at Jason; they appear to know each other. Y/N stares at Clarice unless she's in a not-good mood.
RACHEL KING (CIR.1968)
CIA FIELD OFFICER
ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴀɴᴅɪɴɢ
ᴀʙʀᴀꜱɪᴠᴇ
"Hello there, my gunny- You look like shit," Rachel says as she wraps her arms around Y/N's waist.
"Well. Great shit flight. You have no idea how the bigass' spin my head to steal your team, Rach." Y/N removes her sunglasses and places them on the desk. "Sorry in advance, I take it ASAP."
Jason's gaze never leaves Y/N's while both Rachel and Eric are speaking with her. Right now, he appears to be eager to speak with her. But, having seen him, she only avoids his gaze with a firm sharpening of her face.
The old daydreams about Y/N's start to play as a flashback, and Jason could remember everything.
A couple of years for the divorce is far too long. Y/N was a Marine Gunnery Sergeant at the time of her marriage, but she had since been promoted to Captain. She is always excellent at her job, and stronger. However, she wishes to return to normalcy and settle down with a druggie like him after 9/11.
Jason messed everything up at the time; he had done it all along. He was completely clueless. Guessed Y/N must now be moving on -or with someone else. Even if the past continues to haunt him.
"All prepared, ma'am."
"Nice work, Clarice." Y/N steps upfront the monitor, starting. "CENTCOM has given the green light to raid the facility and seize any weapons on-site. However, there's also has the Republican Guard that we must keep an eye on." Y/N cocked her head in the direction of Jason. "On arrival, Lieutenant Kolchek will lead the raid on the facility. And whether or not we find any weapons, we will carry out a full weapon inspection."
Y/N held quiet since Eric's command began, giving him space. "Now listen up. Y/L/N will involve us as a co-negotiator, and with her background, she can help you on the raid. There's been a change in leadership. But Rachel's operational expertise and local knowledge are just as valuable as ever. She'll be flying with us, and I want you all to show her the same respect. Any questions?"
"The fuck are we waiting for? I'm ready!" Merwin's enthusiasm renders Y/N grins.
Jason loathed the fact that everyone else could make her smile but not him.
NICK KAY (CIR.1973)
SGT. USMC FORCE RECON
ᴅᴇꜰᴇɴꜱɪᴠᴇ
ʀᴏᴍᴀɴᴛɪᴄ
"That's tribal territory out there, Colonel. Make no mistake, those people are feral." Y/N raises an eyebrow at Jason's Sergeant, indicating that he agrees with his Lieutenant. "I take it we're getting air support? Sir, what's your call?"
"Up to yours, gunny," Y/N smirks at Eric and quietly considers Jason and his Sergeant option before dismissing it. "Negative, we'll keep this small; move fast-in, fast-out."
"With all due respect. I think that's the wrong call, ma'am." Y/N's brow furrows in irritation at Jason, and she directs her steely counterargument at him. "With all due respect, Lieutenant. I didn't come here for a holiday, and it's not your place to make the decision. If we spin up too many helos, we'll increase our chance of being spotted. Any concerns, see me after the briefing."
Eric rouses and eases everyone up. "This is why we went to war! This is what gets us out of bed every morning! Make no mistake, ladies and gentlemen, this is how we stop Saddam from using these weapons. Prepare in an hour. Dismissed!"
Y/N exhales deeply while inadvertently making eye contact with Jason, who is already looking at her.
"I have concerns, ma'am." While Jason confronts Y/N, she faces him with her arms crossed across her chest and her head tilted. She keeps her distance and is very polite. "Well, tell me."
"We're about to enter bandit territory. With all due respect, I'm afraid my team is not even close to being adequately prepared for the remoted." His hands were crossed behind his back. "We're here—a few Corporals were lost a few weeks ago."
"You are the Force Recon commander. This is your responsibility, if I'm not mistaken, to be fully prepared in any condition, aren't you?"
"We don't have a lot of bandwidth here," Clarice speaks up, cutting them both off, causing Y/N to come to a halt for a few moments.
Y/N sighed as she saw Eric continue to talk with Rachel while doing nothing to help. "We make do with what we've got, Claire. Do you mind if I take your seat?"
Jason watches his ex-wife approach her assistant, sat with her legs crossed, and began typing on the computer to find the most recent satellite data. Joey then walks in and hands her a piece of paper for her to sign. "Could you please sign below, ma'am?"
"Yeah, sure." Y/N unties the messy hair bun that she pins with the pen, then signs the paper for Joey before returning to the computer.
Jason took his time and scrutinized every detail of Y/N. She's so bossy and hot at the same time, fucking God. Her earnest eyesight, gestures, and the way she spoke with her head tilted were all telling. When she spoke at work with a strained slight smile, she caught him off guard, just like when they first met.
She's still as appealing to him as she was before.
Why the fuck did he decides to divorce her?
Y/N is still having a conversation with Clarice. She stands up with her backpack and sunglasses on. Jason doesn't want to miss out on this chance before she leaves the briefing room.
He takes his chances to clutch her wrist, quite tightly. "We haven't worked on anything together in a long time. How is everything going for you?"
"You shouldn't bring it up. It's over since we left." Y/N carefully pulled her wrist out of his grasp. When she notices Clarice gazing at both Jason and her, she drops her voice lower. Slowly, shaking her head. "Don't make things difficult for me."
"Please, Y/N. Let me finish." Jason catches her wrists once again, manages to pull her to his side. "I just wanted you to know how much I miss you."
Before Jason noticed that she was still wearing her wedding ring. On his earpiece, a damn call sign popped up.
"Mailman Three here to Mailman Two-One Actual, Lieutenant, are you there? Over."
As Jason rushed out the door. With laboriously and distractedly breathing through her lung, and being disturbed by that damn dimples, Y/N kept a close eye on his form, until out of sight.
Fuck, this was going to be a long day.

Y/N, accompanied by Jason, they go to question the captives and inspect the huts about the weapon's silo. As the two walks into the room, one of the marines reminds her. "This man was armed, ma'am."
"No doubt," she reacted to him before kneeling, questioning the shepherd in Arabic. Jason is still standing behind her, watching over her with undue concern. "You've got a bigger gun than I do, brother. Too big to scare the jackals away from your goats, right?" She leans in even more. "Now tell me, where is the silo's entrance?"
Jason couldn't keep his shit together any longer. After this fucking shepherd spit in Y/N's face. He knocks shepherd down with his rifle at the back, then pulls him back into position. "Stand down, Lieutenant! We start by raiding his place." Jason's violent behavior is reprimanded by Y/N, who sighs and scolds him.
"It's the only language these people understand, Colonel."
"All you have to do, Lieutenant, is follow my orders." With a threatening tone, Y/N stands up and approaches the shepherd one more time. "It's not gonna end well, dirtbag."
Jason came over to block her exit from the hut and handed her his scarf. Y/N stared at the fabric with skepticism before shifting her gaze to him. "This is what for? We're running out of time, Jason!"
"At least just let me wipe that shit away." He said this while tenderly cleaning Y/N's cheek along with her hair while she grudgingly blew her parted lips.
As they avoided each other's gaze, an Iraqi soldier launched an unexpected strike on the raid. One of the helos was hit by a missile and crashed to the ground. Due to the force of the impact, Y/N happened to fall into his arms by chance.
"Fuck it, asshole!" Y/N hisses angrily as Jason helps her in pulling herself up. She was about to take a step to the side when one of the bullets struck the wall close to her face. As a protective instinct, Jason pushes her behind him. "Stay inside!" Then he quickly draws his rifle and exits the hut.
In the midst of the chaos, Y/N goes to bring Clarice entering the hut. "Stay back, Colonel!" While attempting to cover Jason's way to the closest to the Iraqi soldiers' barrier, Nick and Merwin yell at Y/N.
"Rachel! Where are you?" Eric returns to the hut to find Rachel, just as Y/N emerges outside with the remaining marines. "What are you waiting for? Return fire! Come with me!" While reloading the ammo, she contacts the earpiece of her radio. "This is Y/L/N, all call signs. We were attacked! Can you give me an update on the contact? Over!"
"Y/L/N, this is Killjoy Two. We're under fire and falling! Targets have advanced into the LZ-" When the second helos crash-land, she looks up in horror as the signal fades and the ground begins to shake bit by bit. The foremost thing that came up to her mind; it's Jason.
"Goddamn it! What the hell was Eric thinking coming to this fucking place?" Y/N runs through the spray of gunfire, carrying the dead marines' belongings, and storms toward the waring zone. Seeing Jason, he lets the unarmed shepherd flee- with one of the Republican Guard creeping up and pointing a gun behind his back.
According to the trigger sound, Jason was tense. Y/N, she also pointed the rifle pointed at the Iraqi soldier and pulled the trigger as well. "You better not miss," she added in Arabic, "come on, we already let your people go!"
"No more killing." Finally, the antagonist raises his hand, and Jason turns around to see Y/N place her rifle beside her arm. However, the ground begins to tremble more, and she loses her footholds; The earthquake has begun. "Isn't that worse enough?"
Jason reaches for her and grabs her hand, but his fingers only reach her fingertips. "Come here, darin', look at me, I've got you-"
"Jase!" He could hear her terrified screams as she was dragged underground- beneath the ground's surface, right in front of his eyes.
"Y/N! No!"
The last thing Y/N heard was a cry for her name.
All of a sudden, everything went black.
𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐒
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟐 𝐇𝐑𝐒
𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐇: 𝟓𝟓 𝐅𝐓.
Y/N chokes out the sands in her lung while suffering from a sore throat and dizziness. "What the fuck." She groaned and clutched her bleeding side as she stood up. "All call signs, this is Y/L/N, please respond, over."
"Goddamn shit." She whispers and passes through the gate, "Kolchek?" The image of Jason's terrified face when she fell underground flashed through her mind. Where's him? Is he alright? Is he still topside? Or has he fallen here the same as her?
She's hoping he's still up there.
Oh no, the guilt is starting to pile up. Up there, there were far too many deaths among the marines. It's entirely her fault that she led the team on this pointless mission and received nothing in return.
"Eric? Rache? Clarice!" Peeking around, Y/N concluded that the cavern she'd tumbled into would be too unstable to climb out. "Kay?" There didn't seem to be any way out of those damn walls. "Y/L/N to Mailman Two-One Actual, I need your location. Repeat, respond with your location. Over!"
"Y/L/N here to King, how copy? Over." Y/N kept moving since she had no choice. "Come on, fucking answer me, please." She went into a version she hadn't been in a long time, rifles and shotguns at her hips, and backpack securely fastened. "Dropkick, this is Y/L/N. Where are you? Over." Everywhere in the caverns was wholly silent but unsettling, as if something lurked in the shadows, having watched every inch of her.
Unforeseen. Through the darkness, the yells could be heard further into the cave's maze of halls to the dead ends. Unlike anything Y/N ever heard. It made a clicking sound like a snake. The sounds of dehumanizing noises became shriller, more enraged. That's making Y/N scrambled leaps with a gasp.
The rifle and the earpiece were the only sources of lighting. Y/N had the impression that the pretty odd clicking sound was approaching her. It causes her to take a slow step back, hands low to the rifle, and lean close to the wall. Knowing that confronting would be a bad idea. "Lord, save me."
SALIM OTHMAN (CIR.1963)
LT. IRAQI GROUND FORCES
ꜱᴛᴜʙʙᴏʀɴ
ᴄᴏᴜʀᴀɢᴇᴏᴜꜱ
A hand appears out of nowhere and wraps itself around her mouth. "Shhh." Y/N lets out another surprised gasp, and the man behind her begins to whisper in her ear. "Over there, there's a demon." Y/N clenched her teeth and drew in a deep breath.
The sight of the monster crawling through the straits in her face freezes her even more. One of the marines on the ground is devoured by it. "We can get through this, but only together. They react to sound - like bats. They hear you - they hunt you."
Her eyes are wide open in shock because this is not what she expected. "I've seen their weakness. They burn in sunlight. Like any living being, they can be killed. A stake through the heart. Your bullets will only slow them down. Even a truck falling on them just makes them angry. We do this together, okay?" Following that, he let go of her mouth.
When Y/N turns around, she recognizes him as the Republican Guard who pointed the gun at Jason. She's not sure why, but seeing someone over here makes her feel better. "We can kill it. You move into a flanking position and get its attention. I'll do the rest."
Y/N quickly agrees by making eye contact with him. "All right, I'm ready."
In a sneaky direction, the two abut the monster. The Iraqi soldier gives Y/N a clue to get its attention. She fired the rifle straight into its heart. The obnoxious monster knocks her over as it spreads its wings and readies to strike her.
The man attacks the monster's heart with his metal pillar. Y/N was out of breath, but she stood up right away to help him press the metal against it, try to kill it together.
"This- This is bullshit!" Y/N squealed, balancing on the edge of the dirt and catching her chest to slow her racing heartbeats. "What the fuck is that?"
"Never before have I ever seen anything... So vicious." She focused her attention on the man in front of her. He knelt on the same level as she; unarmed and was injured beneath his right limb. "Do you believe in the demons?"
Y/N shook her head and tried to stand, "if you'd asked me that before up there. I'd of laughed in your face." She observes the beast for the first time. As she gets closer to the unfortunate marine, she grabs his pistol and tosses it at the man who has just rescued her from the nearest death. "Did you just beat it on your own? Before you found me?"
"We were trapped in the temple. The Sumerian temple. We were in hell." In his distress, he took her pistol, and he appears to be in tears and about to burst into sobs. "Thanks."
"I suppose you should know who I am if we're going right through this shit bowl hell. Colonel Y/N Y/L/N, US Marine Corps." She extended her hand.
"Salim Othman, Lieutenant, Iraqi Army." The Republican Guard speaks quietly while shaking her hand. When Salim notices her wedding ring, he exclaims, "you might have someone waiting for you at home— I do have one. It's my son."
"Huh?" She felt more at ease with the stranger, telling him. "No- we um, we've separated, actually. I mean divorced." Y/N's face was upright and emotionless once more, but her eyes shivered as her thoughts returned to Jason.
"How come you're still wearing a ring if you're no longer together?" Salim asked, his eyes unclouded, innocently. "You still love him?"
In response to his question, Y/N simply glimmered at him and said something else with a weak smile. "Thanks for saving my life, Salim."
Y/N leaned her gaze to her hand, hesitated for a moment, then took off her wedding ring and clasped it onto her necklace instead.

Summary
Stories Untold is a sci fi psychological horror adventure game released in 2017 by the studio No Code Lt and published by Devolver Digital.(1) Adventure games are characterized by exploring, puzzle solving, and narrative interactions with game characters. (2) The ‘adventure’ label hails from the 1st known adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure developed during the 1970’s. (3). In Stories Untold the player will do mostly 3 things: enter text into a writing prompt and hope what they entered progresses the game forward (text adventure), click around the environment to find interactive elements and utilize these elements in a specific order (point and click), and do some very light exploration.
Stories Untold’s origins lay in Ludum Dare; an event where game developers around the world challenge themselves to make a game from scratch in just a few days aka a ‘game jam’. (4)  House Abandon was the product of such a game jam. (5)  House Abandon would prove to be so well received that it is the very spark that would grow to become Stories Untold. (6).  House Abandon became just one of the four stories featured in Stories Untold.
Each story has the player assume the role of an unidentified person using various electronic equipment ranging from locations that include an abandoned house, a laboratory, and a remote radio station in a blizzard. There is a fourth chapter but to explain its location and tasks can easily wade deep into spoiler territory.
It’s very difficult to reveal if this game attempts to execute on a specific message or not without spoilers. So treading as carefully as I can I will say that yes there is a message to be found here. A tragic takeaway that can hit hard for some players who put in the work to leave no narrative stone unturned.
Analysis
Disclaimer: I’m not a fan of puzzle games, or puzzles in games. They too often devolve into ‘guess what the developer was thinking’. More on this in a bit.  Back to the regularly scheduled program:
The development studio behind Stories Untold, No Code Ltd, describes the game as the following:
“Four Stories. One Nightmare.
From the prototype 'The House Abandon' comes the critically acclaimed, and BAFTA winning, 'Stories Untold', the latest madness from No Code. Four short stories, tied together in a complex web of psychological-horror, intense visuals and genre-bending adventures.” How does this game execute on these selling points? Let’s address the last line first: genre-bending adventures. In my playthrough I walked in expecting a fairly basic adventure game with excellent presentation and left having experienced that same notion.  This is all to say that Stories Untold, as far as I can tell, is not bending any genres.
The text adventure portion of Stories Untold doesn’t make a noticeable departure from one of the earliest text entry experiences ELIZA; a program created in the 1970’s that simulates a psychologist by responding to a user’s text entries (7).  In fact after having played around with some ELIZA clones online (8) I’d say that Stories Untold actually underdelivers in this genre compared to ELIZA that was developed nearly fifty years ago. Point and click began with the game Enchanted Scepters in 1984 released on the Mac (9). In that game you do much the same as you do in Stories Untold: Moving your cursor to find an interactive point that hopefully drives the game forward. An activity unfavorably described as ‘pixel hunting’.
While I do concede that Stories Untold executes well enough on its mechanics would I also concede it is genre bending?  Absolutely not.  Mechanically speaking it falls very strictly within its genre.
As for the intense visuals the game advertises it has? I’m strongly inclined to agree.  This game’s visuals are a love letter to the 80’s. It’s as if the game reached into the past and brought a portion of that era forward in time both temporally and visually.
Stories Untold also executes on psychological-horror aspects as well. There were times I was genuinely frightened both via jump scares and/or the dense atmosphere the game draws the player into. This game evoked feelings of fear, mystery, and foreboding of what was behind the next event.
“It is up to the designer to provide the appropriate information to make the product understandable and usable. Most important is the provision of a good conceptual model that guides the user when things go wrong.” (10) -Don Norman
The promise of a text adventure sounds great on paper: enter some text and the game reacts to what one entered driving the player’s progress forward. Just the thought of that fills my mind with excitement at being able to utilize my conversational skills I’ve learned in life to interact with a game sounds incredible The thing is, and the reason I’m personally not a fan of puzzle games is that they almost always seem like playing a game of ‘guess what the developer was thinking’ instead of the player applying their common sense to solve a puzzle.
If for example in a text adventure game you are trying to walk around a house you simply typing ‘walk around the house’ may or may not work. Perhaps the developer perceived ‘walk into yard’ as walking around the house. For me this creates a schism where it stops being about me vs the game and instead becomes a battle of how my exact wording for doing something very simple differs in verbage in how the developer would write it. So instead of walking around the house and losing myself in the story I’m now trying to guess what the developer thinks are the right words to say.  What compounds this here is that the feedback is binary; either what I typed works or it doesn’t and I get the equivalent of an error message that doesn’t offer any guidance on exactly what the developer was thinking. This ‘guess what the developer was thinking’ issue wasn’t as pronounced in the point and click sections of the game. These were almost always tests on one’s observational skills and parsing over every little detail until the path forward reveals itself.  Some of the puzzles I was willing to endure and some… I just looked up a walkthrough to solve them so I could get back to enjoying the game’s incredible atmosphere. The crazy thing about Stories Untold is me as a player desperately trying to scrutinize every little detail to move forward shares a strong connection to the game’s narrative.  I really appreciate that despite my misgivings with this game’s puzzles.
As for the game’s narrative itself… I say I left the game mostly satisfied. Throughout the game the music, visuals, and gameplay really got my mind racing with the possibilities of the world that was spilling out before me. “Where could this story be leading?”, I excitedly pondered.  And sometimes I was even afraid the game would provide an answer.  Seeing how it was resolved was a bit underwhelming.  I won’t lie.  I went from a mind racing with possibilities to a flat, “Oh it’s that? Well that’s something I guess.”
If there was one thing I wish this game did differently it would have been to have focused entirely on the text entry mechanic presented in House Abandon. I said before I went and played with some ELIZA programs online and I loved that there was no failure state. The conversation just continued even if the code emulating a human would sometimes spout nonsense. I don’t expect anyone, let alone Stories Untold, to conjure up a fully realized artificial intelligence to amuse me for my 3 hour adventure game. But I can’t help but muse about a more realized text entry loop.
This game has 12 total achievements to earn. (11)  Since the game utilizes a level select system, there are no missable achievements.  Most achievements are earned by just progressing through the game.  The ones that aren’t awarded in this manner are obtained by light exploration and finding some collectibles. All in all very easy to 100% in one sitting.
Significance
Stories Untold has received several notable awards (12) including British Academy of Film and Television Arts Game of the Year in 2017 (13).
Steam Reviews has it sitting at ‘very positive’(1)  while Metacritic has it at a 7.0/10 user score. (14)
It has sold at least over 100,000 copies on Steam (15). If Steam sales remained roughly the same on the other platforms it was ported to (Nintendo Switch, Playstation, Xbox) that would imply at least a few hundred thousand people have decided to enter the world this game provides. While adventure games have drastically changed since the days of Colossal Cave Adventure with games like The Walking Dead and Until Dawn, text adventures have mostly fallen out of mainstream gaming discourse. For that reason the fact that Stories Untold managed to break through in the way it did favors it being a touchstone for many adventure and text adventure games going forward.
Recommendation
Ask yourself the following: Do you like arbitrary puzzles?  Do you mind some psychological horror in your entertainment?  Do you ever wish you could just play through chapters in your favorite book? If you answered yes to both these questions then this game was made for you.
What if you’re like me and you can barely stand puzzles in games because they seem to evoke a ‘guess what the developer was thinking’ type of feeling?
I would still recommend this game.  The reality of the game is that it can be completed in just a few hours.  When you get stuck, look up a guide, solve your roadblock, and get back to enjoying this game’s stellar atmosphere.  It’s really worth experiencing. Especially if you lived through and/or are a fan of the 80’s
If you’re completely puzzle adverse but still enjoy interactive narrative?  It might be worth looking up a playthrough or livestream.

This is the first installment to the 694th Battalion series. I hope you all enjoy!
Mourning and grief in this one. If you see anything else that needs a warning don’t hesitate to let me know. This one is also pretty PG.
This is also over on my AO3 as well if you want to check it out there!

The hangar is quiet, more so than usual as the Jedi cruiser begins its offloading procedures. Ven watches as a squad of nat-borns wander by, the five of them talking to each other in hushed whispers. One of them doesn't look up from a datapad as she drinks from a bright orange can, one of those energy drinks with a week's worth of sugar rations in one can. She's probably their Sargent. She doesn't notice a trooper walking towards her, causing her to slam into his chest plate and bouncing back a few steps, "Uh, sorry, sir. Wasn't paying attention." She stammers out. Sir? She slides her datapad into her squadmates pack and continues on her way.
"That one's a hot mess." Sage stands beside him, a smile on his face as he watches her. "That rifle is almost as big as she is." His brother crosses his arms.
Ven just huffs and turns back to the rest of the platoon. The men wander around, unloading crates and supplies, getting what was salvaged after the attack unloaded and out of the way. They all look solemn and beaten down. "You think they'll be okay after this?" Ven asks Sage.
"If we're split up, no. But if someone is willing to take us on, all of us, then maybe." Sage sighs, letting the ever-present smile fade. He's exhausted, they all are.
"I'll talk to someone," Ven doesn't know who to talk to you, usually he would go to the Commander or their General or even the Generals padawan but they're all dead. He's the highest-ranking one. "We'll figure it out."
------------------
"Sargent Cerez!" A voice rings out.
She turns to see Colonel Alpin walking towards her a datapad in hand. "What can I do for you, ma'am?" She tries to straighten her field uniform as best she can.
"I would like to promote you to Lieutenant. Unfortunately, all but one platoon of the 694th Battalion was wiped out on their last campaign." She flicks through the information on her datapad.
"I'm sorry ma'am? Out of almost 600 men, only one platoon survived? Forty men are left?" Sargent Cerez asks.
"Actually only thirty-five are left. One squad lost five men." The Colonel tells her, her blue eyes finally meeting her cybernetic ones. "The highest-ranking officer is an ARC trooper, his CT number is four seven five three. He goes by Ven. He was recently promoted, he got back from training last week."
The Sargent looks down at her boots, "Ma'am are you sure I'm the right person for this?" She crosses her arms over her chest plate, "Omicron's Sargent would be a better match-"
The Colonel finally places her full attention on the woman, "Axta, you are the most qualified for this position."
Axta looks down at her boots again before she nods, "Alright. I'll do it."
"Congratulations Lieutenant Cerez. You will meet your platoon tomorrow." The Colonel smiles.
-----------------
"Wait, so if you're leaving who's the new Sargent?" Beetle asks her, jumping down from his bunk. The Mirialan is the newest addition to the squad.
"Lucky is." She turns to the human sitting at the table in their quarters. "He will handle all of the missions from tomorrow on out."
Doc gets up and claps him on the back with a huge smile on her face, the Zabrak congratulating them both. Ruby just grins. "We got this. Don't worry about us." Doc smiles at her.
Lucky stands and embraces her, "We'll be fine. Don't forget to visit when you're on triple zero, though. Beetle's gonna miss you." He pulls back with a smile.
Beetle punches Lucky in the shoulder, "Hey!"
She turns and exits the barracks as her old team bickers, she's going to miss them too.
------------------
Ven stands in front of his platoon, each of the men in full armor, standing at parade rest. As he walks by the remaining four men left of Sage's squad he can feel his brother's grief and hesitation. How are they supposed to trust someone else with the rest of their family? He lays a hand on Sage's shoulder as he walks by, just to tell him that he's still here. All of his squad is still there, at least he doesn't have to mourn any of his batchmates.
When he turns a nat-born officer is approaching them with another in tow, "Gentlemen," The blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman greets them, she's a Colonel apparently. "This is Lieutenant Axta Cerez." She steps aside so the small woman can step forward, she's the nat-born they saw yesterday, the one downing the horrible energy drink. Ven tries not to sigh but he can hear Sage cackling in their private comm channel. The Colonel steps forwards again, "She will be accompanying you on all of your missions, she will be around to help ARC trooper Ven with leading this platoon."
"Ma'am, with all due respect, I think I can lead a platoon." Ven starts to argue, they really don't need someone like her giving them orders.
"This isn't up for discussion." And with that, the woman turns on her heel and marches out of the hanger leaving their new officer standing in front of them.
-----------------
She really doesn't know what to do at this point in time. Walkthrough the ranks? Talk with ARC Trooper Ven? At least get them out of parade rest. She clears her throat before she speaks, "At ease, men." All of them relax immediately, some taking off their helmets and others still just staring at her.
One of the Sargent's makes his way towards her, he has a small green tattoo on his right temple, it looks like a little sprout, one that just popped out of the ground with its cute two little leaves, his hair is messy and a bit long, a strip of it is dyed the same green as his armor. "So you're our new LT?" He asks with a grin.
"Um, yeah. Yes, definitely." She curses herself as she stumbles over her words. She holds out her hand, "I'm Axta. My team called me Spooks."
"Spooks?" The ARC trooper finally joins her.
"Some locals on a backwater planet kept yelling it whenever they saw me. Guess I looked like a ghost?" She shrugs.
The ARC rolls his eyes, she can already tell that they probably won't get along the best. He's serious, all business, no play.
The Sargent wraps an arm around her shoulder, jostling her towards the rest of the men. "Spooks it is. I'm Sage, you already know Ven," He points to one of the other Sargents, "That's Tyme." Tyme takes off his helmet and waves to her, his hair is blonde, she wants to ask if it's natural or bleached, "Over there is Bay." Bay hasn't taken off his helmet yet. "And Clove over there is one of our medics. That's it for our command." There's a sad note in his voice but he tries to cover it with a smile.
"We're glad to have you onboard, sir!" Tyme yells over to her.
Ven huffs next to her, "Well some of us are."

i have now written two entire original novels that...
Put them up on AO3, if they’re in any way even tangentially fannish? I’ve definitely seen people do that and then go on to legit publish. (…mostly I’m suggesting this bc I’d like to read them!)
<3
I’m sort of tempted to just toss them up as epubs somewhere, anyway!

I TOTALLY get what you’re saying about publishing being a) a whole different skill set, and b) a lot of work, but if you get to the point where you want to try it, I’d be happy to offer advice and walkthroughs, especially if you decide to try self-pub, which is where most of my experience is. Just hit me up anytime. <3
AHH thank you!! If I do get them to a place where I want to put them out in the world, I will definitely do that!

I have the opposite problem, wanna team up?
I AM SO TEMPTED, marketing/formatting/posting/etc is so intimidating, seriously

if I ever finish a halfway decent original novel, I do want to try formatting it as an epub for “fun”
Yeah, the ‘halfway decent’ part is part of what makes me anxious--there’s something a lot scarier about showing other people original work that they’re not already invested in, somehow.
