10 Poorest States in America As Per Poverty Rate
Have you ever wondered why the poverty in America seems to struggle more than others? What factors contribute to the high poverty rates in these states? What is the poorest state in America? You’re in the right place, if you’re curious about the elements affecting the poorest states in America.
The United States continues to rank among nations with the highest child poverty rate at 20.9%, significantly surpassing the global average of 11.7%.
By reading this blog, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the socio-economic realities in America’s poorest states. Moreover, you’ll discover how factors like education, industry dependence, and historical context contribute to their high poverty rates among the poorest states in America.
Top 10 Poorest States In America Are As Follows:
Louisiana
Poverty Rates: 18.9%
Unemployment Rate (Q3 2024): 3.9%
Average Salary: $53,440
Estimated population: 4.57 million
Louisiana tops the list of the poorest states in America. It has a unique blend of vibrant culture and significant economic challenges. Louisiana’s history is based on racial discrimination and economic disparity.
Moreover, the state’s economy depends on industries like oil and gas, fishing, and tourism, which are subject to fluctuations in global markets and environmental disasters. This leads to economic instability. Thus, the range of Louisiana’s average wage as of 2024 is $52,306 to $102,000.
In addition, Louisiana’s education system faces significant challenges limiting opportunities for high-paying jobs, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. As such, Louisiana’s literacy rate as of 2024 is 27.1%, meaning over 72.9% of the state’s population lacks basic literacy abilities.
Moreover, Louisiana has the second-highest rate of childhood poverty, with 26.8% of its children living at or below the poverty line.
2. Mississippi
Poverty Rates: 18%
Unemployment Rate (Q3 2024): 2.7%
Average Salary: $47,570
Estimated population: 2.94 million
Mississippi often competes to top the list of the poorest states in America. The state has a complex history and faces several challenges to its current economic status. Unfortunately, the Mississippi Delta, once the headquarters of American slavery, is a significant factor in the state’s poverty.
Beyond that, Mississippi’s economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare. These sectors’ pay is frequently lower than others. Consequently, the state’s citizens will earn less money overall. Mississippi also has the lowest median household income of any state at $44,966.
Unfortunately, the state has a lower graduation rate than the national average. As of 2024, Mississippi has a literacy rate of 28%, indicating approximately 72% of the state’s population lacks basic literacy skills.
In addition, the state has the highest child poverty rate, with 27.9% of its under-18 population living below the federal poverty line.
3. New Mexico
Poverty Rates: 17.8%
Unemployment Rate (Q3 2024): 4.1%
Average Salary: $57,520
Estimated population: 2.11 million
New Mexico frequently has one of the highest percentages of the poorest states in America. Many jobs in the state offer wages below $12 an hour, making it difficult for families to make ends meet. As such, it creates a situation where people work but still struggle financially.
Moreover, New Mexico has lower educational attainment rates than the national average. This can limit job opportunities and earning potential. In 2024, the literacy rate in New Mexico was 29.1% and around 71.9% of the state’s people lacked basic literacy abilities. Also, New Mexico’s public schools have the second-highest dropout rates of any state.
The average home value in New Mexico is $303,286. Poverty is more concentrated in rural areas, where access to resources and job opportunities may be more limited. Moreover, New Mexico’s median household income stands at $50,822, making it the third-lowest in the nation.

Not to have children.
It was something I decided just a few years back.
It's funny though. When I was growing up, I was envisioning how early I should get marry in order to have kids and meet my grandkids. But the moment, my parents sabotaged me with financial issues in my college phase, those thoughts flipped.
I'm not sure about other cultures but in Asian culture, it's all about respecting the elders and filial piety. Do I give a shit? Can't say 100% no but no. I don't believe in respecting all elders. I only believe in respect the elders who respected me and brought me up... actions over blood. kind actions.
Do I believe in filial piety? I want to say fuck no.
But can I? Absolutely not.
Why? Because all of my actions contracting my no's.
I'm helping my parents pay for mortgage payment. I get grilled on if I come back home with things I bought for myself and I usually get hit with the, "wow you're so rich now!". Mind you, over like 50$ shoes. really. I get snapped at if I spend money on food. But you know what I dont get snapped at? When I pay for their bills. Grocery. Shopping. You name it, I probably paid for it.
This is why I chose not to have kids. I have 2 big kids awaiting for my financial support because they want to chase after the American dream and pay for overpriced housing with overpriced construction.
All of this, I probably can't say to them. Because older generations are so slow-minded, stubborn, prideful. So prideful that they justify why they need us to pay for them. Because of trillions money they spent on us..our diapers, our clothes, our food, the oxygen we breathe in.
But did I ask to be born? Fuck no. Is it too late to reverse that decision? I think of that every single damn day.
When I declared this to my parents, they were arguing with me... or in a way.. cutting a deal with me to have just 3 to 2 to 1 kid. Also, resorting to offering to bring up my kid?
This is what I really wanted to say. You had kids and you worried financially how to raise the kids. But if I have kids, I have to worry about you both and my kids? Make it make sense. But wait no, they are gunna retaliate back by saying you earn so much more than us now and even more if you marry a 6 figure salaried partner.
What did I really say? I want to enjoy life as how it is right now. Have you thought of, if you fall back.. you have us.. but if I fall back, I have absolutely nobody.
That fucking thought scares me every single day when I wake up. for work. for weekends. for anything.
