Miracle Babies

Pesticides, dioxins, thalidomide, bisphenol-A,

polychlorinated biphenyls, lead, antidepressants,

radiation, sulfur dioxides, cigarettes, mercury,

and every other teratogen known and unknown—

turning our babies blind, crippled, deformed,

anxious, intellectually arrested, drug-addicted

before they even see the light of day, if not

outright stillborn, and it leads me to conclude

that modernity’s greatest contribution to our

human genetic inheritance is its perpetual and

myriad threat to its existence, and I wonder how

any of us were born safely, and if so, hat’s off

to your mother, so if you have ten toes to walk

over to her, and ten fingers to knock on her door

and two arms to give her a hug, do it sincerely.

Happy Earth Day! Shouldn’t every day be Earth Day? I started mine walking the flats in Brewster—glorious! It’s great to enjoy nature but we need to advocate for her, too—every day. Without her we are nothing. When she is degraded, so are we. Gradual degradation is often barely noticeable until it hits a tipping point. On this #earthday we wanted to give a shout out to @brouwerijwest for making a difference! Brouwerij West is committed to doing their part to help protect our planet! Their facility is covered with solar panels, and generates more electricity than it uses, with their mash filter-based brewery using 30% less water than traditional breweries. Does it feel like we’ve taken many steps backwards this last year, in our efforts to eliminate single use plastics? But ... the bigger problem is that with all the plastic we do collect in our bin, less than 10% of American plastic waste is actually recycled ♻️ Still for many of us, we feel that everyday is Earth Day. And although I fail daily with my own actions, I appreciate all tips that will hopefully make a small difference, every day of the year! Here are a few that resonated with me: * Change your diet to fight climate change. Try participating in meatless Mondays, and focus on plant based eating. It might surprise you! 🌯 * Pledge to use reusable grocery bags and water bottles. Let’s get back at it! 🚰 * Fight food waste by composting. With all of the backyard gardens popping up, imagine how happy our plants will be! 🪱🌱 * Change all your paper bills to online billing, and cancel magazine subscriptions. You will be saving the trees and the fuel it takes to be delivered by mail! 🌳 * Buy local food to reduce the distance from farm to fork. Buy straight from the farm, frequent your local farmers’ market, or join a local food co-op. It’s so fun to receive a local produce box! 🥦🍓 * Donate your old clothes and home goods instead of throwing them out. When you need something, consider buying used items.
