I like the idea of this happening right after Solas returns from his companion quest. I think he would be less guarded and more emotional, and maybe therefore more likely to lose himself in the moment. I also think he might trust the Inquisitor more after they help him and especially if they chose to help his trapped spirit friend.

In my headcanon the line where Lavellan asks if there is a way to coexist with spirits, is one of the moments where Solas falls in love with her. Not only is she seeking knowledge, she's also showing compassion towards creatures that are generally feared and avoided.
