Dang. I'm looking pretty rough these day's. That's just how it goes out in the middle of nowhere. I am definitely thankful to have a full stomach though! I had no plans today because no family. I asked my friend Charlie if he minded if I washed some clothes. He said shure if I wash your clothes you can fix my leakey toilet! I said it's a deal!!! 😊 Been awhile since ive had clean clothes because I don't like asking to do em at anyone else's house and because I've got my own washing machine! Still waiting on the cold weather to hook it up! Still to much outside to do before then. Anyway I fixed the toilet and luckily had a couple extra parts he needed and he then had me over for dinner. He made his famous Meat Loaf! 😊 He makes it so tasty every time. I just love it. So now I'm home with a full belly about to do something I have not done for year's until recently. Play video game's. It's getting cold so it's the perfect time for it. As long as I'm still getting one thing done at least per day. I remember I purchased an X-Box live card year's ago and need to dig it up. That was $50.+ dollars just sitting around here somewhere? If any of y'all still game please message me your gamer tag so I can game with ya. That'd be fun. And tell me how to add you on X-Box live! Thank you West Coast! This past tour was our most successful and delightful one yet! We are extremely lucky to have the best fans and friends as well as the opportunity to tour with our BFFs in Western Settings and Problem Daughter. Sure, we didn't make it into Canada, but we're getting that figured out so next time they'll approve our shreddyness and let us in. We can't wait to hit the road again and see everyone! M Live and ‘Carpet Dad’: Q&A With Matthew Glick, Marriott International
Marriott International’s social marketing strategy is driven by M Live, its award-winning Global Marketing Command Center that launched in 2015 and now has regional hubs in Asia and Europe. The global hotelier considers M Live its real-time conversation engine, as its team creates social media content that engages and connects with the next-generation traveler in the digital space.
Beyond content marketing, MI is using social media to create unique experiences that connect the heart of its brands to customers’ hearts. The team is tasked with using data and insights to creatively come up with memorable ways to surprise, delight and engage guests, with the occasional lucky guest getting a bespoke experience and the opportunity of a lifetime.
Case in point: last week’s activation with “carpet dad”—aka photographer Bill Young, the rug-besotted genius behind the @MyHotelCarpet account on Instagram. Young has racked up an astounding 1,775 nights in Marriott hotels, or nearly five years’ worth of overnight stays. He started his carpet-centric Instagram account in 2015 to entertain himself during layovers and to share interesting designs he found.
In addition to having a great eye for design, he’s a wordsmith who accompanies his photos with amusing captions and inventive hashtags. Still, it wasn’t until daughter Jill gave his account a nudge on Twitter that his Instagram account went viral, jumping from 125 followers to more than 600,000 and catching the eye of CNN—and Marriott.

With his passion for taking photos of eye-catching hotel carpets, Marriott was intrigued by his hobby, and reached out to Young to invite him, wife Heidi and daughter Jill to visit Marriott HQ (at top) in Bethesda, Maryland, with a special mission.
Given his love for carpets, Young was invited to meet Marriott’s design team and dream up a carpet inspired by one of his photographs—a collaboration that’s now in production for a one-of-a-kind hotel carpet to top all hotel carpets, because it’s one that Young designed with his favorite hotelier.
Loved being hosted by all the great folks at @marriottintl HQ yesterday in Bethesda. This #Hotelcarpet was part of large piece featured by their Intl Design Team. The full size image is a world map and the yellow splashes represent properties. Very cool, I love maps. The finished carpet will be installed at the new Aloft Hotel in Austin, Texas, where Young’s daughter Jill attends college. It will also serve as the stage for an upcoming Live at Aloft concert at the hotel.
As a platinum elite member, Bill had already reached the highest status for access to Marriott International’s 30 brands—now it’s fair to say he’s an uber-brand ambassador and will have a lasting relationship thanks to this unique partnership.
Curious to find out more about this unique customer engagement, we spoke with Matthew Glick (right), Senior Director of Creative + Content Global Marketing and Head of M Live at Marriott International.
Matthew, what was it about Bill Young that caught your team’s attention and led to this latest M Live initiative?
Our Digital Content Producers inside Marriott’s social media command center, “M Live,” use many tools. We are constantly searching for the latest trends and stories to engage with our customers and travelers on social.
Through Marriott’s always-on approach and our M Live hubs strategically positioned around the globe, we quickly identified Mr. Young’s Instagram account after it went from a couple-hundred followers to hundreds-of-thousands of followers overnight. After a bit of analysis, we determined that Bill Young is a Platinum Elite Marriott Rewards and SPG member, spending more than 1,700 lifetime nights at our hotels!
Whose attention did he catch exactly, and were you looking for an Instagrammer or other social media influencer and brand ambassador to engage?
Credit goes to Renee Lim, a Digital Content Producer in our M Live Asia Pacific command center, who first flagged “carpet dad’s” handle. It happened shortly after Mr. Young’s daughter tweeted that for Christmas all she wanted was for her Dad’s Instagram account “@MyHotelCarpet” to go viral.
We are always looking to engage with our guests on social media and our Loyalty members in order to create two-way conversations that generate additional content and naturally highlight our 30 Brands.
Is it more important to have a big following or an engaged one? His network seems to appreciate his eye and love for puns (he’s quite the hashtagger!) Is it quantity or quality of engagement that matters more to your social media team?
With @MyHotelCarpet now at more than 650,000 followers, we definitely think that’s a pretty big audience, but we’re always focused on the quality of content posted to social media, as well as engagement levels and reach.
So you’re bringing him in to design a carpet—walk us through the rest of the engagement.
The entire Young family worked with our Global Design team, including Marriott’s head of design for Aloft, Aliya Kahn. Bill and Jill will also be joined by designers from Royal Thai—our flooring partner for this experience. They’ll develop a design pattern that will be manufactured and then make its way to the Aloft Hotel in Austin, Texas. The area rug will be featured during a “Live at Aloft” concert at the hotel.

Jill goes to college in Austin and Bill is a pilot, so we wanted to choose a nearby hotel that the family can easily visit and admire their work. The family will be invited to the Aloft Austin when the design is complete.
We’re just thrilled to highlight the Young family’s role in helping to personalize our hotel space even more! Concertgoers attending “Live at Aloft” will learn how the carpet was made and why it’s such a special addition to the space.

Working with Bill to create the carpet with our Live at Aloft Hotels program in mind was a natural fit. As each property, including Aloft Austin, are regularly hosting local artists to perform for guests in the W XYZ bar, we wanted to integrate our creative program into Bill’s design inspiration.
It is also a more relaxed and intimate way for guests and performers to share the space. We aren’t elevating them or separating them with a stage at Aloft Austin, instead, we are creating a more open and visually fun way for the Live at Aloft Hotels program and Bill, to engage with guests.
Marriott is excited to share this experience on social media via our Marriott Rewards, SPG and Aloft social accounts. We also recorded a podcast with Bill and Jill for our Marriott Traveler “Behind the Design” podcast series, which will be up soon.
M Live serves as an amplifier for our social media activations. Our command center works with dozens of teams at Marriott to syndicate the content across social channels, including those from Brand Marketing, Loyalty, Corporate and others – this story represents the potential to reach millions of guests.

Has Marriott done this kind of surprise personalized treat with a social media influencer before? Any other stories you can share?
During the height of PokĂ©mon Go, our team identified through M Live a New York-based gamer, Nick Johnson, who had captured all the PokĂ©mon in the United States and was needing to travel internationally to catch the remaining characters. Marriott Rewards helped Nick on his international adventure as he pursued his passion for the game and chronicled his journey through his own social handles. By the way, Nick did successfully “catch them all” to become the PokĂ©mon master.
What are the takeaways from the success of these engagements with your brand loyalists as you move forward?
We truly are loving the momentum of identifying popular conversations, seamlessly creating real-time content, and having our hotels on social to authentically reach guests and loyalty rewards members on an ongoing basis.
We have built sophisticated M Live command centers with cutting-edge technology and internal and external data. We identify topics that we think or know will trend, like the Pokémon Go phenomenon. Our team of Digital Content Producers identify ways to organically participate in conversations around popular topics, in order to create real-time social media content, that will excite and delight our guests.
Beyond the super-fans that you identify via M Live, how does Marriott’s hotels look to “surprise, delight and engage guests” day in, day out, in person and online/mobile/phone too — especially when it comes to this next-generation digital traveler?
We’re always looking for ways to reach guests who engage with us online with surprise and delight treats. We’ve sent cakes to people on their birthdays, champagne to couples celebrating anniversaries, and even pens to business travelers in need!
Today’s travelers have high expectations that brands deliver a customized, authentic experience that’s relevant to what’s happening in the cultural zeitgeist. Rather than being interrupted by irrelevant messages, Next Gen Travelers expect brands to meet them on their terms, when they want, how they want, and where they are.
Delivering on these expectations is how Marriott and M Live is effectively building deeper, more emotional, and personalized social media relationship with travelers.
