TWO CAKES! Now normally I wouldn’t put two artists’ work side by side because we’re all sensitive and I don’t want to cause anyone to feel bad about their work. However, this is such a perfect example of two cakes that I HAD to make a post about it. This started when I wanted to make a cover for my fic If You Had to Choose. I did the lineart myself, but because of a wrist injury I can’t color it myself. So I reached out to the FrostIron Discord Server and a bunch of artists offered to color it for me. In the end I selected @salamanderink and we went into a really unique, arty direction together. But our friend Sophia wanted to play with the lineart too, and Sal was cool with it. And what we got are two completely different outcomes that I absolutely LOVE. I wasn’t originally going to make two titles but I literally had to because I couldn’t find a font that suited both aesthetics. I even had to scan my own writing for Sophia’s version because crediting myself with font felt too discordant with her lovely signature. So long as you aren’t trying to use your art to make money, there’s no reason to be possessive of ideas. Even if someone else takes your idea they will put their own mark on it, and you will both make something beautiful and worthwhile. The audience knows the difference between inspiration and theft, and they flock to the people who consistently deliver their own spin on things. Cream rises to the top, always. Be generous, be selfless, be original, and your work will shine. Fandom is something we all make together.
