VoicePlay's fans love to challenge them from time to time, and this was definitely one of those instances. The guys were a little intimidated by the prospect of tackling such a popular and complex tune for their PartWork series, but they rose to the occasion beautifully, providing a velvety doo-wop-style take full of tight harmonies and flowing rhythms.

My favorite bits:

Trivia:

The rhythmic and melodic changes in Chris Stapleton's cover of this song were inspired by Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind".

When the VoicePlay guys were tasked with singing it, J.None, Eli, and Earl all started brushing up their already impressive riffing skills. Geoff was slightly alarmed when Layne prodded him to do the same, because basses don't usually riff in that way.

The video was filmed at a swanky Prohibition-era themed bar called Mathers Social Gathering. Their pals the American Sirens used it later in the year to film their "Puttin’ On the Ritz" video.

It racked up 15 million views on Facebook in just 3 months.

There is a very cute video on Geoff's Instagram of him rehearsing in the car and little William trying to follow along with dad. (Kathy's driving. Everyone is being safe.)

The cover art was designed by the guys' friend and frequent collaborator, Rek Dunn.

Judging by the YouTube comments, this video was an introduction to VoicePlay for a fair number of people, pulling in a very different demographic of new fans than their Disney medleys.

By legal definition, Tennessee whiskey must be made from at least 51% corn-based mash, filtered through maple charcoal, and aged in new charred oak barrels. And, of course, manufactured in the state of Tennessee.

Some of the boys indulged in a bit of silly dancing on set while they were getting ready to film.

Voiceplay Visuals: In The Air Tonight

Now this is a song that many people know, at least partially! Even if the name doesn't ring a bell for you, you almost definitely know the part that some people call "one of the most iconic drumlines in music", so really it's no surprise that this was an arrangement from The Human Drumkit himself, Mr Layne Stein! Voiceplay's cover of In The Air Tonight premiered on YouTube on the 17th of June, 2023, and features J None, back again! I will of course say more about the video when we actually get into it, so let's go!

Apparently the style/aesthetics of this video plays homage to a classic 80s cop show called Miami Vice, which used the song "In The Air Tonight" in its pilot episode, in a scene which (so I've heard) has been referred to by some as one of the most iconic in the history of television.

(Also the car belongs to Layne's dad, and likely would have been sitting in the garage since the early days of 4:2:Five, at least)

I won't lie, this may be one of my favourite Geoff Looks of 2023. It's not even anything particular about the outfit, he just looks so pretty in this one! (And his hair is looking very nice here, too 👀😁)

I believe I read a comment somewhere saying this was filmed outside PattyCake Productions or something, like outdoors? And apparently it was a bit warm outside, especially with the lighting rigs, but if they were sweating/partially melting at all during this, you really can't tell! They did great!

J None is freaking amazing, and I really hope he becomes a permanent Voiceplay member again someday; both he and Cesar are fantastice vocalists and performers, and they both have vocal ranges wide enough that they can both easily take the role of baritone and/or tenor!

In my opinion, the original song does not really start getting interesting until the "bass drop" drumline like 3 minutes into the song, but Voiceplay's cover is not even close to dull for a single moment! We get incredible vocals from everyone in this one (and I didn't talk about Eli much at all here, but vocally he was of course phenomenal), and the arrangement has a fair few complexities and interesting stuff to it, like the stomp-clap-click percussion moment which I still struggle to actually keep in time/on beat with! Definitely a very strong cover from Voiceplay, and frankly it's a crime that it "only" has 500k views on YouTube! It deserves a million! At least!

ok so AWSTEN: pretty solidly femme. mostly wears skinny jeans or a skirt and tshirts with sneakers, sometimes sweaters, rarely a sundress. doesnt often wear heels or anything super girly. does her makeup mostly every day, and heavily if they have a show. acts cute and fawning and like a little bit of a diva, but shes pretty down to earth and focused in reality, just like boy awsten. she plays up the girly persona in public, but her personality is basically the same. very serious about writing songs even though shes stretched thin between babysitting and guitar lessons and band practice.

(this is set between 2013-2015 so) she has a boyfriend named grayson. hes fine, she guesses. (spoiler: they break up) shes always considered herself straight; she wants that perfect disney/pixar romance with a sweet but nonthreatening guy. loves the ideal of it, wants to be held and kissed and treated sweetly. realizes shes having weird feelings for otto but drags her feet acknowledging it for years because its scawwy. doesnt stop her from flirting tho because its not gay if you joke about it immediately after!!!!1!!

(boy!awsten struggled with both being perceived as effeminate and also hardcore band dudes being jackasses to him... if he were a girl, i think those pain points would be the same, but slotted into a different gender dynamic, right? girl!awsten being feminine wouldnt get her called homophobic slurs, but shed struggle in other ways...)

she has a huge chip on her shoulder from years and years of getting shit on by band guys for being a girl in the scene who wants to be IN a band. ever since she was a young teen, going to shows and playing in bands with her friends, its been a constant barrage of dudes acting like she cant play guitar, “name three of their songs”, “whose gf are you?”, comments about what shes wearing, just the absolute worst shit. when she was younger she tried to play the games, jump through the hoops, but when she made waterparks she decided she was done with all of that. if people want to check them out because awstens cute, or think of them as a girl band, then fine, let them. she knows theyre good. good enough to stand on their own.

OTTO: short for charlotte, but she hates that name. dresses exactly like her male counterpart: jeans, tshirts, thin hoodies. sweaters sometimes, short shorts sometimes. basically jock style. she played sports all through high school (no, not softball) and likes staying in shape—that plus drums keeps her pretty toned. shes got hella abs, not that shell show you. her hair is curly and hovers around shoulder length, but one winter she buzzes it short just to see.

she doesnt label herself. she likes awsten, thinks shes super cute and isnt oblivious to the way awsten flirts with her (now and also in their old band). but awsten has a bf and says shes straight and otto just figures shes kidding. she really wishes awsten wasnt kidding.

shes pretty much the Lesbian Ideal, not that shes cognizant of it, but she tends to be pretty masculine. that plus being naturally quiet and a beast on the drums shelters her from a lot of the shit awsten gets from dudes in the scene, but it still makes her so furious she legit thought about quitting music when o9k fell apart. she leaves any confrontation to awsten, though. shes glad they decided to say “fuck it” when they formed waterparks, because shes having a lot of fun playing shows with awsten and geoff.

GEOFF: her real name is Gertrude Francine, but she hates that it sounds like a grandma name!!! she shortened it to “G.F.” and it morphed into “geoff” along the way. awsten went bananas when geoff tried out because it meant they were a girl band with entirely boys names and she loves that. she says they cant have a bassist unless they find another chick with a dude name. no luck so far.

geoff loves video games as much or more than she loves music, and she knows a ton about them. she keeps it quiet because she hates getting teased for being a “gamer girl” but once youre friends shell talk your ear off about old zelda games. she dresses the same as her boy counterpart with the long swoopy hair of 2014-2015 geoff. she has big blue eyes and bushy eyebrows and shes taller than awsten and otto. shes a real softy and loves talking about feelings. she was a loner for a while before meeting awsten and otto, but now she considers them her closest friends and looks forward to practice and shows all week long.

geoff is straight because of course she is, but shes a sweetheart and really supportive of her disasterous gay bandmates. not that THEY know theyre disasterous and gay. i dont have a lot to say about girl geoff beyond this but please know that im in love with her and im sad shes not real because i want her to be my gf now. damn.

RNM 2x06 - Sex and Candy

EPISODE SUMMARY:

Maria’s (Heather Hemmens) investigation into her mother’s disappearance leads her and Alex (Tyler Blackburn) to the home of a mysterious boot maker named Travis (guest star David Anders). Meanwhile, on her journey of self-discovery, Isobel’s (Lily Cowles) night out leads her into the arms of someone unexpected. Finally, after making some major scientific strides, Liz (Jeanine Mason) is dealt a devastating blow. Geoff Shotz directed the episode written by Rick Montano & Vincent Ingrao (#206). Original airdate 4/20/2020.

DETAILS:

Max and Isobel's fight:

Lights start flickering when Max starts getting aggressive and then get brighter as he gets more worked up.

The first attempt to expel it seemed like he was causing an earthquake.  He blew out all the windows in the gym, knocked Isobel down, and there was shaking.  But it didn't seem to go beyond that room - no damage is seen when Michael arrives or around town.

Note, after the earthquake thingie the lights go out 

His hands are doing the electric power thingie and THEN he also grabs the lightning.

I think Isobel used her telekinesis to stop it and then push it away, which seemed to work...but if so then why couldn't Noah do that last season? 

Was it the sheer volume of electricity? There was definitely MORE than with Noah.

Michael uses his telekinesis to manually reset Max's heart.  This is very smart of him. Note that he's using his own heart/pulse to get it right.

They are using the antidote to Liz's serum to try to heal Max's mind. 

Michael says that they've been giving him antidote injections for three days (time jump).

Three days of antidote and no new memories for Max.

Isobel remembered her blackouts within a few hours of getting injected with the antidote in 1x10.

Note: Liz hesitated using the antidote this way in 1x10 because Isobel could still be dangerous and they didn't know about the 4th Alien yet.  There doesn't seem to be a similar hesitation with Max. Because Liz trusts him more? Because him forgetting her is more personal? It's not like there isn't a chance that Max is still dangerous…

Maria arranged a Mexican market in the Pony parking lot to subsidize her income.

Buffy the Beagle is Forrest's dog!

Maria comments that the meteor shower makes animals act strange. And humans too.

Forrest and Maria are organizing an open night mic at the Wild Pony.  Free drinks for performers.

Maria clearly approves of Forrest and Alex getting to know each other.  She smacks Alex for his awkward flirting.

The bootmaker's farm is about an hour outside of town.

The Science:

Kyle and Steph are watching a "surgical separation of craniopagus twins".

Craniopagus Twins = twins attached at the cranium/head. (Aka not a heart surgery).

"Did you know, ever since 1947, twin births in Roswell are higher than the national average? Maybe it's aliens."

Speaking of awkward flirting…. "You're just my favorite person I can't stand."

The Spanish:

Le cambio una bolsa de chiles para mi papá...for the free fries next time you come to the Crashdown.

Liz is bartering.  She says basically, I'll trade you a bag of chiles for my papa for free fries next time you come to the Crashdown. 

Note, the captions for this are wrong and use the Spanish word for grasshoppers instead, but you can clearly hear Liz say chiles. Thanks to @rosaortecho for pointing that out to me.

Max says:

I'm trying to eat clean. Uh, tiene carne seca sin como se dice, preservativos.

He's trying to say, basically, does the jerky have preservatives. 

Quiere carne a sin preservativos?

Basically, you want meat without condoms?

Lo siento. Uh, no lo entiendo.

I'm sorry, I don't get it.

Michael asks Max who he's texting. Max says everyone has been messaging him but Cameron is the only one who hasn't responded, which isn't like her.

Wildly curious who he was texting though.  It's not like he's a social butterfly. His mom? The sheriff? Who? As I pointed out to some friends the other day, he spent his 21st birthday getting trashed with his SISTER. This is not a trait of a guy with lots of close friends.

Just as another note, Michael says he ghosted her. When exactly was that? Yes, Max ran out on her in the middle of a handy in 1x03, but they addressed that the next day.  She "broke up" with him in 1x07, but they were still good right up until she left town. 

Isobel:

"Does he seem different to you?"

Alex and Maria playing "Never have I Ever" in the car. Good way to do background on characters.

Maria has never cheated on a boyfriend

Alex has never been in a real relationship. Not even "Kellie Sommer-something".

Alex says that whenever he was with a woman he was trying to disappear.  Except for Sophomore year after Battle of the Bands. Seven Minutes in Heaven in Haley Moore's hall closet. Alex and Maria kissed and it was Maria's first kiss (and boob graze).  She always thought she'd marry Alex. Had to come up with a new plan after he came out. 

Alex says "I did too."

"Kissing you in that closet was the first time in my life that I enjoyed touching someone."

Max picks up Liz for their first date…

Just as a note, Save Tonight was the opening song in the pilot of OG Roswell. During the "oh, Max Evans is staring at you again." exchange between Liz and Maria.  So, it might go well with new beginnings or something ;-)

The Science:

"Psychogenic amnesia limits retrieval of stored memories, but if we light up your limbic system and gustatory cortex with some familiar signals…"

"Your milkshake might bring all my memories to the yard?"

**Note, second reference to this song in the context of Liz bringing Max milkshakes. First was in 1x06 by Isobel. Hmm. 1x06 and 2x06… maybe they should crack this joke in 3x06 too.

Everything you ever wanted to know about psychogenic amnesia:

But, my main takeaway is that it's a specific type of amnesia where there's abnormal memory function but no brain damage or other clear cause of it.

Limbic system:

Basically the part of your brain that stores emotion, behavior, and long term memory.

Gustatory cortex:

Basically the part of your brain that processes taste.

Maria compares Michael to Chad because he starts fights and lies.  Alex disagrees and lists ways that he was doing good things:

He lied to protect his family from Alex's family.

He shouldered the burden of a murder he didn't commit for ten years so that Isobel didn't have to.

He pushed Maria away to protect her - which might be a good thing too because of all his baggage. 

First Date:

Max went to Ranch camp one summer and dislocated his shoulder while trying to read Lord of the Rings on horseback. #nerd. 

Liz references the gala as not their first date, but there was also the desert in high school.  I guess she doesn't count that either. 

Side note: Cam and Liz talked about him peacocking in 2x03, but that kinda felt out of character at the time to the Max we knew.  This Max DOES seem like he's peacocking a bit. Got dressed up, taking Liz horseback riding. He admitted to trying to one up whatever they did together before. Just an interesting (to me) observation.

Liz looks panicky when Max suggests truth serum (because Science!Liz probably could make truth serum), but once she realizes he means whiskey she's like, "oh yes, that's fine." Oh Liz… 

Diego details:

They were engaged just last year

Liz left without saying goodbye

They were working together on the Denver study

They would come home and keep talking about work

Don't think the details of Kyle/Isobel dancing matters all that much, but as a point of amusement I'll share that in the panel on Tuesday night they shared that Lily whispered something different to Trevino on every take...And they got progressively dirtier to the point that she finally felt like she crossed a line and profusely apologized.  Also the lick was a Lily addition. 

Max's confession about killing the drifter:

Kind of an interesting thing, comparing the first version of the drifter story in 1x06 to the 2x06 version. 1x06 was more dramatic, but 2x06 was more personal, I think. 

1x06

"There are moments that define our lives, and there are moments that divide our lives. Incidents that separate us into two different people: who we were before and who we will be after. Forever…One day we were children and the next we were something else. I was a killer. Michael an accomplice.  And Isobel...Isobel was broken."

2x06

"I killed a man once, on a camping trip. This drifter came out of nowhere, attacked Isobel.  I wasn't even thinking. I killed him. With this. I arrest people who kill people. Most of them usually regret what they did. You know, you can just tell that they're forever broken. It's like a piece of them dies with their victims. So when I could feel that darkness, like I had to kill, I wanted Isobel to let me die. Because I couldn't risk hurting even one innocent person. Cause life just wouldn't be worth living."

Kind of an interesting narrative choice to confess to murder on a first date and then have the girl just brush it aside. 

"No, it just hit me why you're so happy and idealistic, and I feel like an idiot. You are that way because you don't remember me. It's a clean slate.  It's like when you got out of the pods with whatever memories you had erased it's probably for your own good."

"Last I heard you were the love of my life."

"Your cohorts, they left out some details. Cause if you had your memories I'm positive the worst thing that's ever happened to you is connected to me. And I can't bear the weight of making you remember that again."

**Note, second time this has been implied.  Last time was by Michael in 1x08 regarding the alien symbol.

Timeline issue!! Alex says Mimi was missing for 3 weeks, but according to the clearly established timelines in 201-203 it was 4 weeks (or a month ish).  I wrote about this here:

A bullet from the Crashdown shooting falls out of Max's journal.  Does it look like it has blood on it? Or maybe just ketchup? If it's THE bullet it would make a lot of sense that he kept it hidden - evidence that Liz was shot. See this comparison between one of Wyatt's bullets in 1x02 and the one Max finds in 2x06

Side note - I didn't really know what Paramilitary meant, so just in case any of you are also not good with military stuff, Paramilitary groups are like private armies. Like, I dunno, the private security firm that Jesse and Cam discussed in episode 2x04. 👀

Male doctor operating on Steph clearly states:

A female doctor replies and its less clear.  What I hear is...Blood gasses are back? Anyone else hear something that makes more sense than that?

She says something about pH levels.

Max admits that he didn't know what would happen when he decided to bring Rosa back.  He just wanted to fix the worst thing that ever happened to all of them.

I think Alex is referring to the twist ending? Or maybe just the insane axe murderer stuff.

M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the Sixth Sense, Signs, Split, etc…

During this scene is the first time we see Michael's tattoo… it's on his arm. I struggled with getting a cap of it, but I know there are gifs going around.

I had every intention of detailing the dialogue in the trailer scene, but before I could get to it, Carina posted the script, so I didn't think it was a good use of my time. Here's the script:

The next morning, Alex calls the Sheriff from outside the trailer for an update.

The Sheriff tells him that Travis and Trevor burned their home and ran...weren't caught by the sheriff.  Which means we may not have seen the last of them.

The Spanish:

"Oh my God. Dios mio, Max. I took off your pants before I even said I love you. I'm some kind of zorra."

Dios mio basically is Oh My God! So Liz really was spiraling. She went, "Oh my God, Oh my God..."

Zorra - female version of Zorro. Basically a vixen, bitch, prostitute… the internet has all sorts of fun words that it translates into. 

"I call this one Visceral Werewolf Part 2, dedicated to my boy Chee Chee, may he rest in peace."

Can we have more Bert? Bert is the best. Also kudos to his goofy friend who is wayyy too excited about this.

My Impressions: "The Little Mermaid Medley" by VoicePlay

Wait, Little Mermaid had a song like that in it? I like that style. Very nicely done, guys.

Serious vibes of VoicePlay Disney Princess Rachel Potter Collab Medleys right now. This is just, like, their thing. Fun beginning song (with Eli, too!), then Rachel’s princess “I Want” song. It’s also similar to their collab with Adriana.

“The girl who has everything”. Wasn’t that a TTS song? (now I want that VP cover of Ready As I’ll Ever Be even more)

Rachel’s got a good voice, all right.

That transition, y’all.

Oh my gosh, that “going up there” sounded AMAZING. This is gonna be a J song.

The glowing voice breaking out and the reflection in Geoff’s eyes is just visually pleasing

He just really looks like a creepy old sea sorcerer, but also super cool, like not how you think of creepy old guys (because, ya know, it's Geoff).

I’m suddenly thinking of how this could be an alternate version of the story with the villain being like that.

I almost feel like this is them telling the whole story, but it doesn’t have the final battle. I mean, the final battle doesn’t have a song, so that’s fine. But it just seems odd for the voice to break out for no reason. #WriterNitpicks

Why does Geoff’s “No” look out of sync? Is that on purpose or something, because it seems to fit the voice going out, as if hers breaking out is taking his with it.

Geoff is just staring into the abyss now.

Rachel’s voice gets closer, and you can just HEAR it. It’s so cool.

Oh, that last note as she gets her voice back and the harmonies go into the last song. Ahh.

No, like, is Rachel going to become part of their world? Is that what this is? Is that why they keep trying to steal her voice? Is Rachel singing “part of your world” meaning she’s going to officially join VoicePlay, and be officially a part of that world?

Also, am I reading too much into this? I think I could be. Maybe just disregard everything I just said.

But I swear, if she does join VoicePlay, I am going to know this was foreshadowing, and I WILL say I told you so.

Anyway...

Wait, wait, who did that “Sing it with me now”? That wasn’t Geoff, was it? It almost sounded like him, but I saw him, that wasn’t him.

Was that J? I think that was J. That’s kind of cool.

Also, I’m just noticing J’s red fingerless gloves, and they’re very nice.

Costumes are actually pretty chill in this one, if that makes sense. Not crazy over the top. Well, except Bird-Eli. And Geoff is purple.

That’s not to say they didn’t do an epic job on it, because they totally did! The costumes fit the roles really well, they look great, but they aren’t so over the top as to distract from the actual people and the talent.

Nice ending. They always make the last chord count.

And… the remix? Apparently? Very odd. Geoff’s good, though.

I think this is the third Disney Princess Medley they’ve done (well, except for that Tangled one they did with aca-Disney). I wonder how many of them they’re going to do.

Overall, very good. I only ever watched this movie once, when I was like twelve, and I did not like it. So I only know maybe three of the songs, and even that’s because of VoicePlay’s other medleys.

So to put it simply, VoicePlay is the master of taking songs I’ve never heard from movies I don’t like (or haven’t watched, in other cases), and making me love them just through their own sheer talent.

This whole thing is just SO FUN, thank you very much. I think it will be on repeat for quite a while.

It does make you wonder if Geoff Bell is a complete psycho in real life or just a very convincing actor considering the roles he generally plays. Maybe it’s the latter, but Bell’s characters always seem to remind you off the old school days when the underworld was run by a secret code, sharp clothes and honour among thieves. Some of Bell’s most notable roles have included the East End Gangster, Bobby Raikes, in Ronan Bennett’s nitty gritty London crime drama, Top Boy Season 1 from 2011. Then there was Tommy Hatcher in Lexi Alexander’s Green Street from 2005, playing Millwall’s top boy and a complete psychopath you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of. Those who have seen the film will know how it ends.

Nick Love’s The Business from 2005, also saw Bell take on another psychopath role and arguably one of his most memorable. The first scene in which we are first introduced to Sammy (Geoff Bell) shows him glassing a waiter after an argument about the bill at an upmarket beach restaurant on the Costa del Sol. Part of the notorious ‘Peckham Four’, Sammy is Charlie’s (Tamer Hassan) best friend and have both escaped to the sunny shores of the ‘Costa del Crime’ alongside fellow South London gangsters Ronnie (Eddie Webber) & Danny (Dan Mead). Frankie (Danny Dyer) is next to join the drug fuelled party with more on screen sportswear than ever before, more cocaine then Casino and an 80s music soundtrack that just makes you want to flick your wedge haircut to the side and dance the night away. The Business saw a massive demand for 80s sportswear brands like Fila and Sergio Tacchini like never before and we played a major role in the revival of 80s retro. Some of the key sportswear styles from The Business remain some of our all time best sellers.

We recently caught up with the London born actor on set for a forthcoming video from the ex One Direction singer, Louis Tomlinson. The song is due for release in 2020 on the Syco Music label which was set up by X Factor’s very own pantomime villein, Simon Cowell, in 2002. We have also supplied the clothing for the music video with Geoff wearing the Fila Courto track top and Louis sporting the famous Sergio Tacchini Star track top. Top 5 YouTube Channels

Intro

Communication is a powerful and ever-changing force; especially with the rise of the Internet in recent decades. And no online service knows this better than YouTube. Hosting thousands of channels and millions of videos, no website has sucked away our free time quite like Big Red.

Today I would like to acknowledge 5 of the platform’s strongest creators, in my eyes. Whether it be for their intelligent content or the sheer fun they bring, to me, these guys are some of the best of the best; and proudly hold some of my greatest respect.

Quick disclaimers: This is my first writing like this, and as you know, opinions can change over time; so please lower your pitchforks and know that there are plenty of channels I love. Also, when writing this, I don’t have a particular order in mind (Except for #1). Whether you find your favorite on the bottom, top, or nowhere at all, know that these guys deserve a watch (if my digital mouth has any impact on your choices, that is).

Enough talk though. Onward, to appreciation!

#5: JT Music

Art is mankind’s most unique unifier, and no art brings people together quite like music. Whether it be country, funk, or rap in this pick’s case, you can look just about anywhere for a good time.  And while rock star NateWantstoBattle is a close second in this regard, no musician really does it for me quite like JT.

While most would look at the genre “Video Game Rap” with an upturned nose, those that stick around won’t find anything quite like what Skull and Pat bring to the table. Their weekly tunes always bring a fire to my subscription feed, whether they’re putting me into the role of a badass superhero, or dragging me into the darkest abyss, I can just about always have a good time nodding my head to the beat.

Not only is their work consistently fun, but it’s also wide in diversity, and constant in quality. Hits like Follow Father, No Hero, and Hungry for Another One capture their source material perfectly within a musical context. Even their cameo appearances in tracks like DAGames’ We Want Out and Zack Boucher’s Ultimate Super Smash Bros. Rap steal the show with their wild energy. I always find myself smiling when I find their newest song; getting a small amount of enjoyment even in my less liked tracks.

Consistent fun and passion can be felt in the notes, and I can’t help but rock my skull out when JT Music starts playing.

#4: GameXplain

Games offer a wide variety no matter where you look. No matter if you’re looking for a deep insight into 30 second clips, latest updates on a title, or general thoughts on an event, you can always find something, or someone, explaining the perspective for you.

I’m a funny guy, aren’t I?

GameXplain has certainly explored over the years. From Cool Bits and Missing In Action in the past, to their famous modern Analyses and Discussions, Andre and friends have always hosted an approachable place with a variety of outlooks from its diverse crew, like Andre’s obsession with Stunt Race FX and Ash’s knowledge and love of Mega Man.

Even if you aren’t super into any of their interests, you’ll still find a laid-back but insightful pool of content. Their discussions are a personal favorite of mine, bringing fun, thoughtful ideas to events or ideas occurring in the gaming industry. I can’t help but get caught up in their hype, especially for Nintendo Directs or the annual E3 Show.

Even if I don’t quite understand the excitement that something is receiving, I can always go to these guys for a solid explanation and platform to join the hype train.

#3: Mithzan

It seems that no matter where you go, Minecraft can be found there. Games, books, plushies, animations, even an entire convention; those familiar blocks pervade some space of modern culture. While this space has hosted some incredible creations, simplicity also has its own beauty.

Mithzan uses this simplicity to great effect. With his buddies Ross, Pooki, Jerry and frequent guests, Max is always there to give me a laugh. And while Minecraft holds a variety of fun games like Would You Rather and Never Have I Ever, Mithzan also offers experiences outside of the blocks, like Uno and Dead by Daylight.

Along with the wide content, the experiences and humor are also varied, sometimes employing puns or old-fashioned smack talk, to name a few. Even with the different conversations and games, the fun and heart are always there. Whether he’s playing a wacky or horrifying game, Mithzan is approachable and honest with his style of play.

#2: Mother’s Basement

Appearances can be deceiving, no matter where you look. Assumed bullies are victims themselves, ‘loner’ people are simply introverted, and the most stubborn ones find themselves lost in an unexpected niche. All it takes is a little looking around, and you’ll find a new lesson or friend more often than not.

And what better place to look for insight than in a Mother’s Basement?

While not all people can see the artistry that anime brings to the table, Mother’s Basement brings its potential to the limelight. With weekly insights and discussions on things like how animation enhances an atmosphere or what makes a fight extraordinary in Animelee, the ideas and thought put into these discussions is top-notch.

Along with this, Geoff (the host)’s voice is great support, staying calm but strong, adding great emphasis on major points. He even provides touches of comedy and actual life advice into his videos. I find myself especially entertained with his analyses on My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist, but Geoff also covers topics like best romantic partners and essential shows to watch (and avoid), and pointing out his reasons why. Even if anime isn’t your style, there are some videos dotted in discussing topics like the nuances of binge-watching in “Is Binge Watching Bad for Us? (Netflix vs. Disney+)” and other media like movies (“Spider-Verse: The Ultimate Spider-Man Movie”) and video games (“Insomniac’s Spider-Man is Truly Superior”).

While it took some time to grow on me, I’m glad to have been welcomed into Mother’s Basement. With plenty of insight and care put into each video, Geoff is just about always a good choice for fun education on how artistic Japanese animation can be.

#1:Fawful’s Minion

The world is full of stories; they’re simply part of human nature. Whether it be fantasy, drama, or comedy, all of us have the potential to weave tales that inspire. And none have inspired me on YouTube quite like Fawful’s Minion.

This mean bean gaming machine has the mouth of a divine artist. His videos always bring a bright smile and incredible awe to me for just how much quality and care goes into each video. Fawful’s Top 10’s have never let me down with their fun, reasons, and pure passion that is tangible in every project.

Not only are the videos fun, but they’re also inspiring too. Fawful’s linguistics is beyond captivating, even partially motivating how I speak and write. Along with constantly being a good time, I’m always inspired to write or gain a storytelling voice whenever I watch an FM video.

And the touches of insight into his personal life give Fawful an air of relatability. Now, I realize I may make him sound like some sort of Shakespearian poet, but he also dispels this through his more colorful language, bringing in modern terms (and curses) and joyful, nearly maniacal at times, laughter and emotion into his speech, making himself grounded and relatable.

Most of all, Fawful’s storytelling skills were, and still are, a big reason why I write and tell my own stories. I want to enrapture others with my words like Fawful does, so he gets a big thanks and respect in my book. Balancing fun, humor, emotion, and creativity, Fawful’s Minion has made a goon out of me, running towards the goal of becoming a true storyteller.

Be My Valentine | Shawn Mendes

𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: just really cute shit

He admires from afar, her tight black leather skirt accentuating her curves. The dip in her blouse leaves little to the imagination. God does he want her, not just in the sexual way. He wants all of her to be his.

He was leaving for tour in a few weeks, and he want to spend as much time he can with his friends and family before leaving.

He’s at a local bar with his friend group, Geoff and Brian already drunk off their asses, flirting with any girl around. Shawn watches (y/n) play a match of pool with Zubin and Matt. He watches her bend forward and hit the balls, getting two in at once.

“When are you gonna make a move?” Teddy asks behind him, startling the poor boy.

He clears his throat “I don’t know what you’re talking about” he says hesitantly, his eyes still on (y/n).

“Oh c’mon, Shawn. It’s so obvious you’re in love with (y/n). Just go talk to her, I’m sure she feels the same way” Teddy encourages, sipping at her alcoholic drink.

Shawn scoffs and turns to Teddy “And what makes you so sure?”

“It’s so obvious she likes you. Plus, she told me herself” Teddy smirks

Shawn’s eyes widen “Really? She did?” When?”

“I went to her house with Emily awhile ago, she got drunk off wine and just spilled it out”

He laughs, (y/n) was a lightweight. He knew it, he knew everything about her. He contemplates on asking her out.

“You know what you should do? Ask her out for Valentine’s Day! That would be so romantic” Teddy cheers

“I don’t know Teddy..” he doubts as he watches (y/n) walk around the pool table, losing his sight of her beautiful legs.

“I know what you can do, she came with me. I’ll say I had an emergency and had to leave early, you can take her home and ask her out for Thursday. Then on the date you’ll confess your love to each other, get married, have childr-”

“Slow down there Teddy. Maybe we could do that. You’d really help me?”

“Uh duh! Y’all are meant for each other”

“Oh no, Emily hurt herself, I have to go and check if she’s okay” Teddy exclaims, the horrible acting very evident, but (y/n) doesn’t notice. Teddy starts to get up from her seat, but (y/n) pulls at her arm.

“But you’re my ride..”

“Have Shawn take you or something” Teddy says before walking out behind (y/n), Teddy turns around and winks at Shawn and a thumbs up.

“Yeah I can take you home when you’re ready” Shawn says calmly before taking a sip of his drink, but really, he’s freaking out inside.

This is really happening.

It’s been a couple of hours, his adrenaline only low because of the drinks he’s had. He watches people’s feet move across the dance floor to some trap song when he feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns around and looks down at the his favorite girl.

“Um, I’m ready to go home” she says shyly, playing with the hem of her shirt, biting down on her lip. He gulps.

“Yeah sure lets go” He puts his drink down and leads her out the bar, his large hand on the small of her back.

He opens the passenger side door for her and held her hand to help her into his Jeep. He didn’t close the door until she was buckled in and then walked around the car to the drivers side, and turning on the engine. He buckled in and then slid his phone out his pocket, connected it to a cord and handed it to her “Pick any song you want, you know my password” he says before reversing out his spot and driving to her apartment complex.

“You didn’t have to walk me up to my apartment” she says, her feet dragging on the carpet of the hallway floor.

“What kind of gentleman would I be if I didn’t walk a girl to her door?” He exclaimed, his hands shoved in the pocket of his jeans.

She giggles, and he smiles because it’s his favorite sound in the world. He watches her take out her keys from her purse and slide them into the hole. “Thank you for taking me home” she looks up at him, smiling tiredly.

“No problem”

Okay, this is it

“Uh, I’ll see you soon?” She asks, as she starts to step in her apartment.

“Um, actually I wanted to ask you if you were busy this Thursday?”

She furrows her eyebrows “That’s Valentine’s Day..”

He nods slowly, eyeing her, hoping she gets what he’s getting at. He bounces from the heels of his feet to his toes.

“Oh! Like a date” she realizes, turning bright red. “I’d, I’d love to go on a date with you Shawn” she smiles sweetly, biting down on her lower lip.

“Cool” cool? Really? “I’ll see you then” he leans in to hug her, and he cheerishes this moment, taking in the scent of her hair and perfume.

“I’ll see you” she says looking into his hazel orbs, and without even realizing it, she goes on her toes to kiss his reddened cheek.

He nods, mezmorized by her and the feeling of her lips on his skin. She steps back into her apartment and closes the door. He starts to walk back down to his Jeep when he fistbumps the air and yelps in excitement.

Now he’s gotta plan a date in 48 hours.

He looks at himself on his rear view mirror, fixing his hair to one side. He grabs the flowers and box of chocolate off the passenger seat and gets out.

As he walks up the stairs to her floor, he contemplates on the date. Is everything set? Will she like it? Then he finds himself at her door, knocking lightly.

“Coming” he hears her muffled voice from the other side of the door, then hears the knob jiggle and lock clicking. The door swings open to reveal (y/n) in a white cami dress with red roses-matching the flowers in his hand- a pair of strapy beige heels on her feet, a denim jacket around her arms. Her makeup is natural, almost like she’s not wearing any and her natural hair down in waves.

He forgets how to breath “Oh, hi” he smiles nervously and he runs a hand in his just styled hair, messing up his style.

“Do I look bad?”

“God no! Far from it actually. You looks so beautiful (y/n), like always”

She looks down, and blushes. “Are those for me?” She says, gesturing to the roses and chocolates in his hands.

“Uh, yes. Happy Valentine’s Day (y/n). Be my valentine?”

She nods as she giggles taking the gifts, “You can come inside real quick while I put these in water.” She moves away from the door to let him in and he closes the door behind him before follong her to her kitchen. He looks around her apartment, a lot of photos of their friend group, some of just the two of you. He then looks at her, reaching for a vase high up in her cabinets. He watches her dress rise up a little around her thighs, as she tries to reach for a vase on her tip toes. He then realizes she needs help.

“Oh! Here, let me help you” he walks behind her, subconsciously placing a large hand on her side to steady himself to reach a vase, he hears her take in a deep breath.

“Thank you” she says before walking to the sink, filling the vase half way with water and putting the flowers in. She rearranged them before placing the vase on her dining table “Ready?” She asks, turning around. She grabs her purse by the door, and opens it.

“Will you please tell me where we’re going?” She pleads, holding his hand with both of hers as they drive down a road.

“Nope. It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you” he brings their hand to his lips and kisses her hands repeatedly.

“Oh c’mon! Please? At least just a hint?”

He sighs, letting go of her hand to only make a turn, and he returns his hand in hers “Fine, uh, scenery”

She scoffs “That doesn’t tell me anything”

“Exactly baby”

“This is our date?” She asks, her hand enveloped by his.

The pick nick blanket is held down my his guitar case and a basket. The sun is starting to set.

“Do you not like it?” He starts to worry

“No, no! I love it. It’s so cute and romantic” she pulls him down on the blanket, and opens the basket to find a bunch of her favorite foods. “I can’t believe you’d do all of this for me”

“(Y/n), I want you to know that I really really like. As more than a friend”

“I really like you too,”

“I feel a ‘but’ coming”

“but you’re leaving soon. I don’t wanna start a relationship that’s a thousand miles apart when maybe later, I could have you not even a mile away,” she says, rubbing her thumb over his swallow bird tattoo.

That’s understandable. Having a relationship with his lifestyle is nearly impossible. He doesn’t blame her for having doubts.

“But I’d rather have some type of romantic relationship with you, then to not have one at all.” She says, looking out into the sunset, her hair flying behind her in the breeze.

“So, will you be my valentine, for life?”

She laughs so hard she has to clutch her stomach. “That’s so cheesy, but yes”

He places a hand on her cheek, moving her head up. He leans in slowly, his hot breath fanning over her plump, glossy lips. She shortens the distance and crashes her lips on his. Their lips move in sync against each other, the fruity taste of her lipgloss transferring to his mouth. She starts to lean back on the blanket, their lips never an inch away from each other. He moves to be comfortable above her, his hand slipping in her hair, she lets out a quiet moan. She pulls away reluctantly, he chases her lips, stealing a peck before helping her back up. “So you’re my girlfriend now?” He asks, smiling from ear to ear.

She giggles “And you’re my boyfriend”

Voiceplay Visuals: Kidnap The Sandy Claws

This video (a Halloween release in 2020) is not one I watch a whole lot. Don't get me wrong, the arrangement is of course amazing, and both the song and video are very fun, but, well, lemme just say that I can promise that there will be no simping/fawning over Geoff in this one! 😅

*Long, deep sigh* Alright let's get into this!

The bathtub made a lot more sense after I actually watched The Nightmare Before Christmas last year ngl (and apparently the reason they did this video sitting down like so was because Rachel was in fact Quite Pregnant during this)

Apparently this was filmed at some location (studios?) called 1010 West, where they also filmed their Superstition video earlier in the month.

(Okay but seriously I can definitely appreciate the thought and effort that went into set design here, like the big black face in the background representing the tunnel in and out of Oogie Boogie's lair!)

We're getting introductory title card things again, like in the Moana Medley, Get Back Up Again, and the Queen Medley! (Though the latter just said their character name)

Great masks, I'm assuming they bought from somewhere?

Layne Stein as Dr Finkelstein 😉 (the "mad scientist" kind of character type kinda suits him ngl)

And Geoff as Mr Hyde...

I can't fault him exactly for his get-up (see the first pic for a better visual), because that's literally what the Mr Hyde character in the movie looks like, see below

The red lips, the green skin, the top hat, everything, but like... why him? Did Layne decide on the characters for everyone?

But anyway, that's out of my system now. I'm not actually criticising, it's just...unusual? 😅 (Also this is the third time in just over a roughly 12-month period that Geoff has had a full face of makeup/paint for a Voiceplay video!)

But with that being said, I love the makeup for Eli, Rachel, and J in this video (shoutout to Rick Underwood and Steven Puerta!). They got the designs on point, but even more vibrant! See comparison image below:

Rachel's acting is as brilliant as ever, and I love her whole look. Style icon!

That (fake) praying-mantis-looking thing is in fact a genuine reference to/moment from the movie, so I learned.

Firstly, I love that Eli, Rachel, and J are wearing shoes that match their outfits, and secondly, I can tell that I haven't watched this video a ton (and haven't paid a lot of attention to Geoff when I have) because for some reason I remembered his outfit being a lot more black (and in all due fairness, he does wear black a lot in videos), but actually he's wearing a dark green long-sleeved shirt I believe, plus some weird baggy vest thing that looks like it might have been made or altered for the purpose of this video. Also that's probably his actual hair? Hard to say, it looks a little lighter and shinier than usual, but that could be due to the lighting and/or having some sort of colouration product in it.

(Also Geoff and Layne look just a little extra big compared to the other three in this shot. It may be at just partially just some perspective/camera trickery (though they are of course the two tallest of the group))

First of all, love the facial expressions, and second of all, Oogie Boogie here is played by Tony Wakim, aka Voiceplay's previous baritone before J joined the group! He now co-owns PattyCake Productions with Layne, and helps out behind-the-scenes with some of the videos, especially in regards to stuff like providing filming spaces, setpieces, and costuming!

Eli: "because Mr Oogie Boogie is the meanest guy around!"

Not going to post a screencap of the Mr Hyde's Hat thing, but basically when I saw that moment in the original movie I was like "OHHHHHH I get it now!"

Eli/Lock is looking suspicious, Rachel/Shock is trying to look like a perfectly adorable angel, and J/Barrel is looking like he is Planning Mischief 😁

Also it's very blink-and-you-miss-it (especially when again, you're not actually looking in his direction for a lot of the video), but a comment on a reaction video pointed out that when Geoff sings "Mr Oogie Boogie is...", he freaking winks! Which is of course a cheeky reference to the fact that a little over a year earlier, Geoff was Mr Oogie Boogie (and he kinda sorta reprised the role in December 2023 for the Jingle Bell Rock video, though full-body costume for that one).

The shoulder movement that Geoff does when he hits a subharmonic on "kicks", like even his self-conducting movements are a extra creepy/character-y for this video! 😅

Genuinely not sure whether Layne nearly falling over on his seat/stool thing was deliberate or a "nobody broke character so might as well leave it in there" moment 😂

Well, Voiceplay aren't called The Theatre Kids Of Acapella for nothing! And also their arrangements and vocal performances are so good that you can honestly forget sometimes that their songs don't use instruments! They basically don't need them!

But anyway, this is the last Nightmare Before Christmas song I will be talking about until I eventually get around to talking about Geoff's cover of Jack's Lament (which might take a while, but boy am I looking forward to it!).

So do you not like any of the new songs?

actually i am either ambivalent on or like all of them. i don’t actively dislike any of them. they’re in a style of music i actually enjoy it’s just not what i like waterparks for. does that make sense? i like waterparks for awsten’s singing voice and geoff’s guitar and otto’s drumming. when awsten is autotuned all to hell and the other two are awol i just don’t like the sound as much. does that make sense? if i heard dream boy or high definition on the radio i would be like “oh this is neat” but i wouldn’t be like “oh my god this is incredible why don’t i know who this is!” which was my reaction to hearing cluster/double dare/entertainment for the first time. wwhn fucking slaps though. ironic that the song about how unfair it is that awsten can’t try new sounds is the only song so far that doesn’t have a new sound. (and since we have vid from slam dunk turbulent goes hard af live)also since you were the only anon who was nice to me i’m gonna use this response to say i’ve decided i was overreacting and i’m still gonna go to the concert and meet the band. i think i was just upset about the leaked track list including worst and feeling played because the whole rock sound interview turned out to be just a lot of...things that were ultimately not true (calling them lies may have been harsh maybe he believed them at the time though i personally find that doubtful) and all the bs that’s gone on on twitter since april. but at the end of the day i love this fucking band and i even love awsten. i can love someone and not love all of their choices. so basically i got upset and said some shit and now i’m good. i’m sure the parx stans will forgive me, since awsten does that all the time :)

Swoon

He walks in the door from the studio, welcomed with the deep voice of Elvis blaring through the house. He chuckles as he shuts the door, glad to know that you are liking the new speakers he had installed last week.

He sets his guitar and bag in the hall, walking through the house in search for you, coming up empty until he passes the laundry room.

This is where he finds you, hips swaying with the beat of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’.

He leans against the door frame, watching you hum along as you fold the grey bathroom towels. He smiles, falling in love with the way you sing along softly, and how you put a hand to your heart as you smile along with the lyrics.

He licks his lips, smile taking over his whole face as he watches you stand with your right hand over your heart, left hand dangling by your hip. He takes that tiny step forward, grabbing your left hand in his and twirling you around the laundry room.

“Shawn!” You squeal, startled since you didn't even know he was home.

“Dance with me.” He whispers, pulling your body closer to his, right hand on the small of your back, left hand holding yours, swaying with you to the beat.

You giggle, blushing as he dances you around piles of clean towels and dirty clothes.

“For I can’t help falling in love with you, for I can’t help falling in love with you.” He sings softly into your ear, pressing a juicy kiss to your lips when the song finishes.

The song changes and he laughs, pulling away, “In an Elvis mood are we?” He asks as Burning Love spills out of the speakers.

“I’m always in an Elvis mood.” You shrug, laughing as he spins you around.

You turn back to the laundry, grabbing the stack of clean towels taking them to the bathroom, Shawn following close behind.

“Always in a Elvis mood eh?” He asks, sitting up on the counter as he watches you organize the towels in some fancy way.

“Always,” You nod, smiling at him over your shoulder.

He blushes, head ducking when you smile at him like that.

Been dating for 2 years, living together for 6 months, seen the good, bad, and ugly and you still make him so nervous.

He bites his lip, peeking up at you through his lashes to find you focused back at the towels. He’s memorizing your profile, finding every inch of you so perfect.

You turn and walk to him, kicking his legs open so you can between them.

“Hey Pretty Mama.” He says in his best Elvis impression.

You laugh, hiding yourself in your hands, blushing a cute shade of pink.

“What?” He giggles with you.

“You just, you look like him a little.” You look up at him, “And when you said that it just seemed like him.”

“You sound like you knew him.” Shawn teases.

“Oh god I wish.” You sigh, looking into his brown eyes.

“You think I look like Elvis?” He raises an eyebrow at you.

“Yeah, especially when that one curl falls.” You smile, reaching up and tugging at one lock of his curls. Making it spill onto his forehead while the rest stay like waves on the top of his head. “Like that.”

“Elvis.” He mumbles, turning to look at himself in the mirror behind him. “I don’t see it.”

“This one show.” You bite your lip, attracting his attention again.

“Yeah?” He says, hands sliding up and down your sides while you silently swoon at the thoughts running through your head.

“Your shirt was unbuttoned a bit, I think you were wearing white. That was the first time I saw it.”

“Yeah?” He leans forward a bit, wanting to be the one biting your plump lip.

“You looked so hot.” You whisper, eyes shutting letting you remember that night.

“Oh yeah,” Shawn’s lost in you, eyes glazed over in lust, lip trapped between his teeth as he breathes heavy, watching you reminisce. “Why didn’t I know this?”

“I don’t know, but I swooned so hard.” You giggle, opening your eyes, coming back to the real world.

“That’s the only time?” His voice is deep, laced thick with want and need.

“There’s been other times, but that one sticks out the most.”

He’s left breathless as you walk away, the Elvis song changing to Blue Suede Shoes, hearing her squeal in the hall “This is my favorite song!”

He’s got plan, such a good plan.

He wants to make you swoon again, want a new fresh memory to stick out to you. He’s got his team working to keep you distracted and away from him all day.

That way you can’t see the way he’s got his hair styled, that one curl falling loosely on his forehead. His shirt is unbuttoned except for a few buttons and he sports an old guitar he picked up recently, looks pretty similar to Elvis’.

He’s worked on a new song with the band, and they’re confused but Shawn has his reasons. Wouldn’t want to perform it if he didn’t have a reason.

And reason does he have.

He’d do anything to see you smile and blush like that again. To watch you bite your lip and sigh as you thought back to that look.

“Shawn, Y/n’s front row with the rest of the crew tonight. Told her there wasn’t enough room for her to be side stage like usual.” He hears through his in ears. “She wants to talk to you.”

He smiles, looking around and finding Geoff with a walkie talkie hanging off his hip. He swipes it, speaking into it.

“Where is she?”

He waits a beat before he hears “Hey, I’m here.”

Your voice floods his ears and the smile that washes over his face is stunning.

“Hey Baby.” He smiles.

“No room for me side stage?” She asks and he can hear the insecurity.

“No and it sucks, I really wish you were here.” He says calmly.

“Me too, I worry about you.”

“Don’t worry about me Baby, I’m fine.”

She sighs, stepping away from the crowd hoping to find some sort of privacy. “I miss you.” She whispers.

His gaze drops to the guitar in his hands, fingers picking mindlessly at the strings.

“I miss you too.”

“When do you go on?”

“Few minutes.” He answers.

“Okay,”

“Be careful out there okay?” He says, remembering that she is sitting with the crowd.

“I will, I’ve got the team with me.”

“I know, and Baby.” He says softly.

“Yeah?”

“Don’t let any boys make you swoon.” He grins.

She laughs, shaking her head, “One boy makes me swoon, and he’s not on stage yet.”

“Shawn, go time.”

“He’s about to be, I have to go Baby. Be safe.”

“Go Shawn, go play, go kill it.”

He hands Geoff his walkie talkie back, rolling his shoulders before he walks on stage.

The crowd erupts as he walks on, smile plastered on his face when he feels the energy of the crowd.

He tries to find you, search for you in the crowd but there is so many people he can’t make it out. All the eyes and smiles staring at him seem to blur together.

The concert going on, all the people in the crowd going crazy with as much skin he is showing. He’s happy, so insanely happy and the only thing that can make this night better is to serenade you and make you swoon.

He nods to the band and they start the intro to the new song on the setlist. He jumps into the crowd, scanning for his crew because that’s where you are.

He walk by, someone grabbing at his arm, looking over he sees Andrew and stops.

Andrew then turns, grabbing you and pushing you to the front gate in front of Shawn.

You look around confused and then meet his eyes, smiling breaking out on both of your faces.

“So this isn’t my song,” He speaks out to the crowd, “But it’s someone's favorite.” He looks at you. “So I couldn’t not perform it.” He laughs at you confused state. “This is Blue Suede Shoes.”

The band jumps into the song, Shawn singing the whole song to you, holding your hand and twirling you even though there's a gate separating the both of you.

The song ends and he’s panting in front of you while you stare at him with a shocked expression.

“Holy shit!” You shout up into his ear so he can hear you.

“Did I make you swoon?” He grins.

“Of fucking course.” You blush at him.

He leans down, pecking your cheek “Love ya Baby.” He says into your ear before running back to the stage.

The crowd is bursting with cheers, never had you guys been so affectionate in public so his fans finally got a taste of what boyfriend!shawn was like.

You’re glowing now as he plays the rest of the show, laughing as hears the girls screaming for more Elvis.

“No more Elvis tonight, but I’ll look into more.” He says when a chant is started. “My girls obsessed so she should be of some help.”

The festival he’s playing as cameras in the crowd to show on the big screen and you now fill the screens for the people to see.

“Right pretty Mama.” Shawn smirks in your direction.

You laugh, blushing and shaking your head. The crowd freaking out about the love Shawn is showing you right now.

“One more song guys, here we go.” He says jumping back into the concert.

He walks back stage, a bit surprised to see you standing there, waiting for him.

He smiles at you, letting his stage hand take his guitar as he makes his way to you.

“Hey Baby.”

You don’t respond, you just grab the collar of his open shirt, pulling him into you, his lips crashing down into yours.

You leave a searing kiss to his lips, licking into his mouth as you clutch his shirt tighter.

His moan is swallowed up but your tongue gliding against his.

His hands gripping your sides tightly, holding you flush up against him.

You pull away for air, and he smiles cheekily at you.

“I’mma take it you liked it?” He grins.

“Holy fuck.” Is all you respond with.

He laughs, kissing you again. “Glad you liked it Baby.”

“You know what else I like?”

“What’s that?”

“When you call me Pretty Mama.”

He pulls back a bit, eyebrow raising “Yeah?” He licks his lips.

You watch that tongue swipe across his lip, eyes narrowing.

“Yeah,” You breathe out.

“Okay,” He sighs, leaning back in and kissing you deeply.

“Figured out why he wanted to play that song.” Mike says, disgust lacing his tone while the team walks up to the couple making out.

Some Nights - ok so first weeks challenge. i feel like chris would just want them to all collab together on one huge group performance. kinda like on the first day of school when they make you do the ‘get to know you’ tests. idk exactly who would sing what parts tho bc there are so many so let your imagination run wild !!

Hand crushed by a mallet - ok. OKYAY. im a home of sexual. but this is a Cody, Trent, Tyler, Harold and Izzy song. Cody is on vocals (especially the rap in this version shdofsgjsk), Trent is on guitar and some vocals (does some back and forth with him during the rap), Tyler is on drums (and does that one tiny background screamy bit towards the end), Izzy and Harold are joined up on creating the background track and DJing the whole thing. the distortion/choppy part at the end is izzy LIVE going ape on the audio level sliders. its one of the most energetic performances of the whole series and surprises everyone including the group themselves

Misery Business - Duncan on vocals and guitar, Geoff on drums, Trent also on guitar and maybe some backup vocals. you all know i chose that bc i love associating mgk with duncan but. i rly like this idea actually ;;

Paparazzi - ezekiel. idk who the fuck else except maybe justin bc he’d dance that shit to death. i will not apologize thats Him and its fire but you may write and send any formal complaints to my po box. ill roll a blunt with them,

Pom Pom - Lindsay, Heather, Sadie+Katie, and Izzy. Lindsay and Heather are on vocals, sharing the chorus and each getting a solo verse, and ofc izzy does the weird rap part towards the end, and most of the background track. they all thought they were stuck with izzy but izzy is stuck with these preps. Sadie and Katie are on backup vocals, but their role in this one is mostly dancing and adding ✨ stage presence. 

Maps - Trent is on the guitar and male vocals while Courtney is on the female vocals (the ~top two performers~ gotta have a song together eventually right), DJ on drums, Bridgette on piano. Heather, Lindsay, Justin, and Leshawna are dancers bc lbr the dance from the video is pretty good for a group number

CREEPER? AW MAN - ok this one. is kind of a joke but wouldnt it be rly hilarious if cody, ezekiel, and harold did this one mostly for fun and the whole second part with the existential breakdown was just. used with on stage satire to make fun of chris for being old or smth. like would they suffer that week, yes, would it be worth it, Y E S,

Mr. Brightside - OWEN ON THE BRASS YES BBY ITS HIS TIME 2 FUCKIENG SHINE, Geoff on drums, Gwen begrudgingly on piano, Noah is on vocals and they have to literally bribe him with everything they HAVE to get him to try and sing this way. and he does it and it aint too shabby but he will never do it again

Domino - Leshawna on vocals (again these choices are all, based on general vibe and style and not necessarily voice, this is a tiny white girl singing,), Tyler on drums, Duncan on guitar. energy to the max babey the speakers are gonna blow the fuck out on this one

Starships - KATIE AND SADIE GET TO BE A MAIN DUO !!! they alternate lines , with courtney on violin, izzy on that synthy backtrack, and justin is involved in this one bc id change just a couple of things abt the music video costumes for these characters but like. [grabby hands] gimme

Bulletproof - ezekiel vibes.....? izzy and harold get to team up again for the backtrack. weird kids only karaoke night

Never Enough Praying (Mashup) - Courtney on Praying, Heather on Never Enough, Beth and Izzy end up together on the background stuff and make a rly nice track actually

Better not wake the baby - Noah gets to sing a song that actually matches his style a tiny bit better lol, DJ on drums, Trent on guitar, and i feel like beth is the only one with any hope of figuring out the accordion keyboard thing thats in the background

This is Gospel - Gwen on piano and Trent on vocals. really the music video is the most important part for me bc i think a challenge where oyu have to sing a really intense emotional song while chris gets to dump shit down on your head from the ceiling of the stage. sounds perfect,

Wildest Dreams - codys on vocals bc god i am Obsessed with this cover being a bisexuality / coming out song . everybody thinks hes just regular simping and being his usual fuccboi self when he chooses this song till he gets to those Very Intentionally Unchanged Pronouns that he sings a little too enthusiastically hhhshHDSHHHSDH , also DJ on drums and Tyler on guitar

Stay - Courtney on guitar and vocals, Dj and Harold are on the hand drum shit. once again i live for the ‘unlikely group actually works together and rocks it’ stuff. courtney as always has talent and enjoys what she does but harold and dj kind of steal the show with how in sync and energetic they are abt it lmfaodghd

Age of X-Man: Next Gen #4 hurtles towards the end as Glob, Armor, and Rockslide attempt to track down Anole before he does something stupid. Everything’s really starting to fall together in these minis as the lie of the world starts to unravel. It’s also interesting how Ed Brisson portrays the cultists fighting back against the “no love” edict as just as deluded and indoctrinated by X-Man’s change of reality.

Aquaman #48 begins Arthur’s quest to recover his past in the first part of “Mother Shark”, with one hell of a twist for an ending cliffhanger. The high level of the quality of art on this series continues as Viktor Bogdanovic and his Greg Capullo-inspired style (with Jonathan Glapion and Daniel Henriques providing additional inks) join Kelly Sue DeConnick, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles.

Batman #71 is part two of “The Fall and the Fallen” from Tom King, Mikel Janín, Jorge Fornés, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. With the heavy reliance on dream sequences and simulations lately, it certainly makes me wonder who’s gaslighting who, whether anything in the story is real or if King is just playing us. Great art, though.

Bloodborne #12 concludes “A Song of Crows” from Aleš Kot, Piotr Kowalski, Brad Simpson, and Aditya Bidikar. This arc has been even more surreal than the first, embracing that odd mix of depression and existentialism that seems to permeate the franchise. This is going to take a few more readings to really sink in.

Calamity Kate #3 gives us a look into the disastrous relationship between Kate and Sandra. Though the accuracy of events might be a bit nebulous, given some missing time and an appearance that not everything is happening as we see it, this paints Sandra as a particularly resentful, hateful person. Also, another clue in Kate’s rival. Great action art from Corin Howell and Valentina Pinto, with an interestingly designed tentacle monster.

Daredevil #5 is the gut punch. As great as everything that Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles have delivered in the first four issues (and seriously it’s some of the best Daredevil since Miller and Mazzucchelli), this one tops it. A reckless, dangerous Daredevil, a hazard to himself and everyone around him, having it dawn on him what he’s been doing. And all of the Catholic guilt, shame, and judgement, not just on himself, but on the revelation that he’s seemingly oblivious that all of his friends have also been in his situation.

Fairlady #2 is another great issue from Brian Schirmer, Claudia Balboni, Marissa Louise, and David Bowman. The blend of fantasy and police procedural is seamless, presenting a completely believable world, building up bits of supporting characters and elaborating on the setting as the story unfolds. Also a great shift into a kind of storybook art style from Balboni and Louise during one of the flashback sequences.

Guardians of the Galaxy #5 sees the other shoe drop. Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, David Curiel, and Cory Petit deliver an excellent set-up for the finale of the “Final Gauntlet” here as Hela makes her move and we find out what the game actually was. Also, more hints about Rocket that don’t seem pleasant.

Immortal Hulk #17 goes hard for thriller first before leaning back into horror as Bushwacker stalks Banner through the “abandoned” lab. Very interesting new “rules” that Al Ewing is laying out as what makes up a Hulk keeps consistently changing.

Joe Golem: Occult Detective - The Conjurors #1 picks up with our dead hero being nibbled by fish, and it’s just downhill from there for Molly, Simon Church, and all of existence due to Dr. Cocteau’s meddling. Great art from Peter Bergting and Michelle Madsen.

Justice League #24 is the penultimate chapter of “The Sixth Dimension” and amidst the dire situations, heroic sacrifices, and stunning betrayals, there’s a great opening sequence about the little disappointments that Superman feels when he lets someone down. It’s like Catholic guilt amplified immensely, but it raises some interesting questions about how superheroes deal with depression. Or not deal with it, as it were. Great work from Scott Snyder, Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sánchez, and Tom Napolitano.

Little Bird #3 is another incredible instalment in this story, with some interesting revelations about Little Bird and Gabriel, from Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, and Aditya Bidikar. The artwork from Bertram and Hollingsworth is mind-bendingly awesome.

Livewire #6 continues the PSEP arc from Vita Ayala, Kano, and Saida Temofonte as Amanda discovers more about the organization and gets introduced firsthand to the academy bully enforcer. The art from Kano, from the characters through the layouts, is next level.

Naomi #5 explains everything. Mostly. Sure, there are still questions, and there’s likely a huge battle coming for the final issue, but we get a full-fledged explanation as Naomi tells her newly-learned origin story to Annabelle. And it’s brilliant. Wonderful parallels to other tales and a hint at implications for the DC Universe as a whole. Also, drop dead gorgeous artwork. Seriously some of the best ever to grace the comics page. Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, Jamal Campbell, and Wes Abbott provide another excellent issue here. Highly, highly recommended.

Oblivion Song #15 is one hell of a page turner. Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Annalisa Leoni, and Rus Wooton barely give us a chance to breathe in this one as the Faceless Men attack, both those who’ve chosen to stay in Oblivion and the exploration teams jaunting back and forth from Earth. Great tension.

Kelly Thompson is delivering some great humour, while the art from Veronica and Andy Fish remains perfect for anything and everything in Archie’s world.

Superman #11 swings back around to Zod after Superman unceremoniously left him being beaten by Rogol Zaar as this arm of “The Unity Saga” continues, delving further into the battle consuming Jor-El at the moment, but not really explaining anything. This is chaos, but it looks pretty.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder in Hell #3 is worth it just for the glorious artwork from Mateus Santolouco and Marcelo Costa. The monster designs are incredible and the red, surreal glow of the colours just give life to the strange and deadly nature of this hellscape.

Transformers #5 suggests that there’s a whole lot more going on under the surface of Cybertron and the mystery of the death of Brainstorm that we thought. More interesting things going on with Rubble too, as he gets kind of lost while Bumblebee’s off doing other stuff.

Uncanny X-Men #18 adds again to the body count as things continue to fall apart. The nihilism, darkness, and depression in this series has really been getting to me these past few issues. With announcements for House of X and Powers of X, this is starting to feel like a “throw the X-Men down a hole before rebooting” type of story. I’m still not sure if I like it, since it’s putting me in a sour mood.

War of the Realms #4 drills down on Freyja’s defence of the Black Bifrost, intent on taking away its use from Malekith. All of the art on this series has been phenomenal, but Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson somehow take it up another notch. This is epic.

War of the Realms: Giant-Man #1 kicks off another front in the War as Freyja tasks Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, and Atlas to infiltrate the Frost Giants’ bastion on Earth and get revenge, from Leah Williams, Marco Castiello, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Sabino. Very nice bits of humour and wonderful artwork.

War of the Realms: Spider-Man & The League of Realms #1 opens up another front as Spider-Man leads the members of the League of Realms into New Heven territory, from Sean Ryan, Nico Leon, Carlos Lopez, and Joe Caramagna. It’s great to see more Ryan-penned Spider-Man, even if he only ever seems to get to write the event tie-ins. He’s got a great handle on Spidey, effortlessly displaying that humour and humanity of the character every time.

War of the Realms: Strikeforce - The War Avengers #1 is the second Strikeforce one-shot elaborating on encounters spinning out of War of the Realms #3. This one focuses on Captain Marvel’s motley crew of Avengers as they try to strike at the heart of Malekith in Britain from Dennis Hallum, Kim Jacinto, Ario Anindito, Java Tartaglia, Felipe Sobreiro, and Joe Sabino. Some nice Deadpool humour and art in what is one of the more bonkers tie-ins.
