hello. this is dahyun mun.

i don’t know where to begin, over the course of the past six months/+ having been faced with / had rumours about me brought to me personally, as i try to avoid gossip blogs, because what’s really being achieved through anonymity? no one has approached me and opened dialogue about issues that have been hurtful / harmful to them, and unfortunately, i’m merely human. i don’t possess the ability to read other’s minds.

i have avoided submitting anything, because what fuels these types of blogs is dialogue, whether truth or baseless hearsay, and what i want is peace. for myself, for mark mun, for the people who have been harmed through any of the things that have been said about me, specifically, or us, and i refuse to include other people by speaking on behalf of them without their direct consent. but i also realize that what continues to be submitted to these blogs will remain forever, as is, unless i speak up.

to beginㅡ currently, mark mun and i are not a couple, not that our personal lives outside of role-play are anyone’s business, but our status, unsurprisingly, has been dragged through the mud, and it’s been used as reason for someone feeling like they had been hurt / harmed through interactions with us. we know who you are. at the time, we were a couple. our relationship wasn’t the reason your ship with mark mun ended, however. the two of you spoke about it out of character and, ultimately, ended the ship.

yes, i am at hot sugar as taeyeon, for wondering minds. no, she isn’t flirting with other sm idols. currently, taeyeon isn’t flirting with anyone ㅡ shinee’s minho included. stop jumping to conclusions because two muses banter / speak through discourse that implies they’re close. this does not always equal romantic interest. please, remind yourselves that some of sm’s idols, taeyeon included, have known each other for 15+ years. this is also true for everyone. muses can be friends without romantic intent behind their words / actions. to address the whole “ most of bts had problems with jimin ”, no??? there was one in character situation that was, unfortunately, handled poorly, through multiple members’ involvement, however, whether through ic or ooc dialogue, it was spoken about. the drama was unplotted, it was heavy, and i only wish that those involved could have resolved it before jimin’s departure. bts at hot sugar are, in fact, kind and loving muses, and the times i have spoken to any of them ooc, it’s been the same. mark never dated jiwon. i don’t know where this rumour originated, but jiwon was in a long-standing relationship with another muse, and she and mark were just friends. as for a “ secret group for love letters ”, there was never one. a birthday letter was shared in a friends’ group ( again, it wasn’t a secret ), considering dahyun and mark were being targeted in character and hawk-eyed like they were under scrutiny based on factless suspicions by other muses. it began to affect mark mun out of character when she was accused of “ secretly ” being on hyperbeam ( the reality being that she, like myself, uses her account for real-life movie nights with her family ) i would also like to say that mark mun nor myself were ever members at kissland. i am not kissland’s dahyun. we do not know who those muns are nor do we wish to be associated with what happened.

i have been accused of many hurtful things through the past six months/+. people i care deeply for have been accused of hurtful things / mentioned when muses are “ lumped together ” to “ prove a point ”. those who know me behind my muses know i’m extremely approachable, even though i’m also an extremely anxious person, but i try to see situations from other people’s perspectives. i’m not a bad person, nor do i actively join collectives in order to ruin other’s lives. mark mun and i don’t write dahyun and mark anymore. this is how we have chosen to hold ourselves accountable for what happened, mind you, over a year ago. due to everything, this has also made us scared of reaching out too much and hindering our experiences at hot sugar. at hot sugar, we remain inclusive. we host games / hyperbeam streams and our invitations are always “ everyone is welcome ”. we care about this community a great deal and want everyone to feel warmly welcomed and included, thus, we do our parts. as much as our lives outside of role-play permit us to. what the people behind anonymity are failing to realize is that, when they post through gossip blogs, it’s more damaging than beneficial / healing. we are humans. we are genetically coded to fuck up, we aren’t designed perfect, and sometimes, life experiences need to happen in order for us to grow and become better versions of ourselves. i’m not the same person i was yesterday, last week or one year ago. neither is mark mun. we wish for peace. we want to move past this and be allowed for our histories to be left behind us.

we are two grown people with families, hobbies and careers outside of role-play. this is to say, neither of us are running more than our allotted number of accounts at hot sugar ( it’s two ). our real-life schedule don’t allow us to do this, nor would we break rules, as we respect the mods at hot sugar and have spoken to them ourselves.

what we want is to open a dialogue. if anyone is comfortable to approach me or mark mun, we encourage you to. there are two sides to every story. there are two perspectives. i would also like to take this opportunity to genuinely apologize for my past behaviours. i’ve been mindless and careless, i can admit when i’m wrong, but by holding myself accountable, i also want to make a point to say that i am actively more mindful of everyone. it’s never my intentions to hurt / harm anyone, and i always go into interactions, both with friends and new connections, with a tender heart and open perspective. i encourage you, please, to approach me when it does happen that, maybe, my muse hurts your muse’s feelings or something feels off. i’m always eager to resolves issues, and again, i’m not a mind-reader. this is, ultimately, a hobby. it’s intended to be fun. it’s intended to be a break from our lives. thank you.

let’s go with an adamora plot, for reasons. honestly, going out and doing their own thing? like the guardians are a bigger group but the individuals often break off to do their own thing. and gam and adam always pairing up, sometimes drax too. cause it just warmed my heart to see all three of them (adam + the mean & greens) taking on the church of universal truth together. it’s good i love it. OK BUT BACK ON TRACK so adam and gam pairing off to do missions or whatever together. and one time being in this alien town, walking around, just having fun looking at stuff and getting new gear if gam wants it (adam doesnt really need much) and like...getting little gifts for each other?? ;a; just enjoying themselves. they def hold hands cause i said so, and doing something kinda normal ????? my heart

It’s been so long but I love carol and just getting to know her and talking with her so much, I really respect and admire her for a multitude of reasons. like, knowing exactly what she wants in regards to rp and sticking to what makes sense for her muses, the principle behind that, knowing where her interest lay, her dedication to her muses, setting her own boundaries, idk i just feel like meeting her and becoming friends has really helped me in my own personal growth. and we’re just often on the same wavelength about a lot of things. it’s one of those friendships that’s like, i dont know who I would be if I had not met this person

favorite muse you’ve written : OOF. it’s gotta be elena. i started writing her for an rp like ,, a year ago and since then i haven’t been able to get that bratty bard out of my head. she’s just so fun and i love exploring more emotional situations with a muse who is honestly terrified to reveal herself in that kind of way. she’s also so flexible when it comes to verses , like everyone needs a fame and money hungry muse ... right? plus , she’s in a girl band in her modern verse and that’s fucking cool.

what inspired you to take on your current muse(s) : i , uh , treated myself to a ps4 and started playing da:i on there instead of my shitty family computer and it reignited my deep love for dragon age? but! in terms of rping inspiration , i love expanding on the canon information provided and playing around with the setting given to us.

what are your favorite aspects of your current muse(s) : i love my girls sm :’)

but specifically , brigid’s humor in difficult situations — even if it might be a coping mechanism shhhhhhh a lot of the time she is laughing through shitty situations because if she doesn’t laugh , she’ll break down. and that extends to how she treats others during those same kind of instances , she makes it her job to keep spirits up. she knows all too well that slipping into despair and anger never does any good , what with her spending the majority of DAO coping with that.

kit has a certain brand of bravery that i will never be able to emulate personally and i love that. she doesn’t give a flying fuck about anyone else’s opinion. she spent her entire life being looked down on and ridiculed all to be raised up to hero status. and how quickly opinions of her change !! and she doesn’t fall for it because to her , their opinions don’t matter.

and while her cousin acts like she’s above it all ( as a way to protect herself really ) , shianni never hesitates to build things from the ground up. her passion is what fuels her and she’ll never let anyone take that away from her. in the alienage quest , the other elves want shianni to keep her head down and go about her life , but shianni stands by what she believes in.

ok ... estrid’s is gonna be weird but i just know this bitch doesn’t procrastinate. like with her DAI run through she grinds and gets better all so she can throw herself into the next Big Bad. she’s such a hard worker and won’t rest until the job’s done.

elena elena elena ... i’ve already kinda gushed about her but i love this annoying little bard so freaking much. she’s trouble and that’s why i love her. she doesn’t pretend to be honorable ... because she isn’t. while the world burns she will still try to find a way to make some coin and that is Valid.

1. What was your first impression of the roleplay community on Tumblr? And what’s your impression of it now?

New, strange even, but exciting. Before roleplaying on Tumblr, I was shofting through different groups on Fac.ebook (Ew, the days--). Back then it felt like roleplay wasn’t much of anything, but seeing all the blogs and work people put into them made me want to learn and expand on my characters more than pretty much ever before. Now, I’ll admit, the RPC on this hellsite feels toxic, and the site itself is broken and forever will be, but I’m not sure I’d want to be anywhere else.

3. Who was your first muse?

My first ever? Some random OC that I likely don’t have any info on at all because I was literally like, six at the time. The one I remember the most from back in my childhood years was Prin/cess Pe/ach, because me and a group of friends decided to muse Nin/tendo characters because. Sm/ash. My first on Tumblr was Mai Taniyama of Ghost Hunt and I refuse to look back on that hellblog. It wasn’t properly set up and honestly sucked. My first serious muse on Tumblr was Fisk, my UT OC. But let’s admit at the time that fandom was... Something... So I consider my first true muse to be Dianne, when I made a Poke/mon blog for her.

6. What are your thoughts on the current roleplay trends on here right now?

All the trends, so much trend. Too much trend. I honestly don’t keep track of that kind of thing, because I found out if I do, then I get overly fixated on it. I will say the overly small icons are annoying, though. I wanna see the character, not a bunch of pixels (Legit I’ve seen 25x25) of what might be their chin, if you use an icon.

7. What is the one trend you miss the most that’s no longer popular or seen as much as it was before?

Remember when people used to actually ask to interact with you? When you could follow, message, and get a thread going within a day because people weren’t afraid to talk to one another without drama or chaos happening? Yeah, those were the times--

9. How long have you been roleplaying?

For literally as long as I can remember. I started back in 2009-2010 on Fac.ebook, and I’d say 2014 on Tumblr.

10. Are there any fandom(s) you avoid roleplaying in?

Yes. Will I name any in public, haha, no, they’re still watching me.

11. What made you start wanting to roleplay?

A child’s imagination and literally nothing better to do.

16. What do you expect from others when they want to roleplay?

Not much anymore, nowdays. I used to be all about talking to my partners whenever I could, to make sure I’d never overstep or just gush about character interactions. But that rarely happens anymore, sadly.

21. What is it you prefer: angst, fluff, or smut? Why?

Is this a trick question? This feels like a trick question. Honestly, given everything, angst. I feel like it’s obvious. However, I enjoy all the mentioned topics when it comes to RP.

22. If you could recommend at least five blogs to your followers, who would they be?

Uuuummmmm- I haven’t really gotten much interaction on this blog, but if I had to recommend people, it’d be @diverse-hearts, @breathless-darkness, @somegremlin, @frozcnlight, and @starlightofdream. They’re the people I know the best so far, however, pretty much anyone I RP with, I’d recommend.

23. What’s the one thing you dislike about the roleplaying community on Tumblr?

The fact that they cause drama for little to no reason, make callouts for petty reasons instead of legit harms, and can’t seem to stand when people have a different opinion than them- Hi yes I’m a salty Kiwi forever.

25. Do you still keep in touch with your old roleplay partners?

I try to, I really do. When I do try, though, it’s mainly the other that loses touch, and I’m the one trying to keep in contact with no response.

26. Is there anything you can change about your skills as a roleplayer?

I would love to make better graphics, because that’s what it feels like it’s all based on. The better your graphics, the more appealing you look. As I cannot do that for the life of me, it’s completely understandable that I don’t get much activity.

29. Which fandom(s) do you wanna roleplay in/crossover with but you’re too afraid to approach?

Mostly the more complicated series that I fail to understand the terms for or has so much lore that it’s hard to sift through. Series like Yu-G.i-Oh, Per.sona, and so on.

𝐢. very deadpan and straightfoward (and even blunt), with naturally frowny-serious expression, we come across as a lot more mean and/or intimidating than we actually are. we probably have our arms crossed at the moment 𝐢𝐢. we share a number of mental disorders i won’t go into considering the fun nature of this meme 𝐢𝐢𝐢. meat lovers, veggie haters 𝐢𝐯. very stubborn about asking for help and opening up to people in general 𝐯. simultaneously aware of how the world works yet kind of out of touch with it 𝐯𝐢. we value speed and strength alike, but are both notably better at the former

𝐢. he’s very hard-working and dedicated when he commits himself to a task. im a lot more lazy and have trouble doing anything that doesn’t 100% hold my interest in the moment 𝐢𝐢. im very vocal about the things i like, he’s very private about it 𝐢𝐢𝐢. he loves black coffee. i can only tolerate coffee if it’s ridiculously milky and sweetened 𝐢𝐯. he also drinks a lot (not often, but in excess when he does) and smokes occasionally. i wouldn’t touch alcohol or cigarettes with a ten foot stick 𝐯. he’s quite arrogant, im quite hyper-aware that i dont have much going for myself 𝐯𝐢. he has a really bad memory, my memory is a steel trap

The Secret To Shinhwa’s Longevity? The Answer is Their Leader, Eric Mun.

Eric Mun, one of the best leaders, if not the best, sets an example of what true leadership is. What has he done for Shinhwa that the group stayed intact, becoming the longest-running idol group in Kpop, with no disbandment & no member change?

Let’s start from the very beginning. After winning a street dance championship in the US, Eric was selected by Lee Soo Man in March 1997 & he debuted as the leader of the 6-member-group Shinhwa on 24 March 1998

In 2003, Shinhwa’s 5-year-contract with SM came to an end. At that time, many 1st generation groups faced disbandment, like H.O.T, Secks Skies, S.E.S. So it was expected that Shinhwa would disband too. Following the group’s contract expiration, SM wanted to disband the group & offered solo contracts to only some members. But Shinhwa’s aim was that the 6 of them would stay together as a group and could not be separated. So, Shinhwa refused the solo contract offers with SM, which was undoubtedly a shock in the industry. So far no artist had ever dared to offend the big boss of the Korean entertainment industry, and they were the first.

So, what did Eric do to avoid disbandment and keep the members together after the contract expired?

Eric, the leader who chose to keep his group together over money. His first priority was his group.

He was offered solo contracts that were FOUR times more than the other members. “Honestly, others would think about those offers for a month, but Eric rejected them immediately, just to let the members be together.”

Truthfully, how many people do you know that can make such sacrifice, whether in real life or in idol world?!!!! .. Eric could’ve said, ‘screw Shinhwa’ and then accept SM’s offer to double his contract 4 times on the condition that they disband Shinhwa and he go solo.. But Eric’s genuine love & loyalty for his group couldn’t be replaced by money or securing a place in SM. He turned down the offers IMMEDIATELY & & took Shinhwa to another company, which was even a great risk as they were leaving the big boss of kpop entertainment to start again in another much smaller company. The result didn’t matter to him as long as remained with the members. imagine that Eric accepted those tempting solo offers, then we wouldn’t have Shinhwa anymore. The fact that the six of them are able to stay together now, Eric contributed A LOT to it.

and to Eric, his choice wasn’t a sacrifice .. it was the best decision he has made in his life.

After Eric chose Shinhwa over money & suggested moving to another agency, then came the next problem. Leader Eric had to fight for the rights to “Shinhwa’s” name.

After Shinhwa left SM among much controversy & refused to extend their solo contracts, then came a huge problem. The members needed to continue using the same name “Shinhwa”. But since SM still owned the rights to Shinhwa’s name, so Eric had to put himself through a crash course in legalities to resolve Shinhwa’s contract issues. Eric was the one who negotiated with the management and no one will ever know how much hardship he had to endure during the negotiations. Eric went to court against SM to retain the rights for Shinhwa’s name. He even studied law to find a way for Shinhwa to continue being active under the same name. (Bear in mind that he was only 24 years old back then!!) .. He paid a HUGE sum of his OWN money to buy the name’s rights.. Eric really went through hell during that period until in the end, Shinhwa won & left SM with the rights to their name. Can you imagine that a young man in his early 20s, gave up on massively tempting solo offers and chose to go through hell & fight for his team just to remain with his band mates & keep the group intact?!!! .. who else can do such thing?!! .. what a true leadership & loyalty!

It’s also Eric who negotiated -alone- with other companies till he chose the best offer for his group. Then Shinhwa moved to Good Entertainment. But unfortunately, not so many people were pleased with that decision & so they tried their best to bring Shinhwa down, asking them to disband like what other groups did back then. In 2004, a journalist once wrote an article heavily criticizing Shinhwa & blatantly used personal attacks on the Shinhwa members implying that they are failed musicians who try too hard with solo activities. He proceeded to slam Shinhwa with ruthless criticism, leading to a big media frenzy. It was then that Eric stepped up once again as the leader to speak out. He made a powerful reply to the reporter & published it on the Internet, asking for a more meaningful review. That reply of Eric went viral & found its way to the high school textbook in Korea as an example of well written argument , marking him as the 1st & only artist to have such feat. He ended the letter with: “It’s not so easy to see Shinhwa. If there’s anything, you can look for me.” & this line became very famous. Here’s an excerpt of his lengthy letter..

WOW! such powerful reply! Eric might be 4D & act like a cute kid, but when someone or something threatens Shinhwa, he turns into a totally different person. totally dependable & trustworthy leader.

When Eric was at the peak of his success, being the nation’s flower boy after starring in the very popular drama “Firebird” in 2004, & dominating almost all CFs and he was dubbed the “CF King” .. Many thought that he would leave Shinhwa & there were many articles released that urged him to go solo & pursue his successful career as an actor & rapper away from Shinhwa.

“I remember a conversation I had with Eric over drinks back when we were filming Firebird (Phoenix). I said ’“It’s a good idea to go into acting. Anyway, you can only be an idol for a few years, just make acting your lifelong career”. Eric turned serious and replied “NO! I’ll be with Shinhwa for more than 10 years, for a lifetime. Please wait and see!” - Firebird Director San Ray’s twitter (2012.03) Eric strictly clarified to everyone what his top priority is, which is the group Shinhwa. Eric: “Shinhwa is everything. Without Shinhwa there won’t be the present me, and I would not meet precious friends and members who love me.” Eric: “Shinhwa is our root and it has to be our core.”

This man’s loyalty & devotion to his group is simply unbelievable!

2008 - The group hiatus due to military service. Eric is always the leader who knew how to keep his word.

In 2008, Shinhwa held their last concert before the 4-year hiatus due to the army enlistment. In that concert, they promised the fans that Shinhwa will come back after all members finish their military service. “Shinhwa will come back, please wait for us”

But .. during those 4 years of military service hiatus, Shinhwa was on the verge of disbandment. So the dependable leader Eric stepped up again to keep their promise to the fans & keep the group together.

and that’s how Shinhwa came back to us again, thanks to Leader Eric who lived up to his position as the best leader & the big brother to his group members and brought them together again. Couldn’t be more grateful to this AWESOME man! he’s truly a man of his words! .. Thanks to him, we have Shinhwa today!

Eric: “Shinhwa must go on forever. Even if there is no company that wants us, we might just form our own company and carry on.”

In 2007, some members left Good Ent. (the company Shinhwa moved into after SM) & many people thought Shinhwa were going to disband. But the loyal leader Eric stepped up again and assured that Shinhwa will go on forever even if there’s no company that wants them, Leader Eric came up with the idea of forming their own company! He’s truly the leader that thinks ahead & seeks for what’s best for his group! to this extend he’s so loyal & dedicated to Shinhwa!

Eric’s efforts to gain the full rights to Shinhwa’s name.

But .. to establish Shinhwa’s company, there was a serious issue needed to be resolved. Shinhwa didn’t have the full rights to their name yet, since SM handed over the full rights of “Shinhwa’s” name to Jun Media Ent. in 2005. So before establishing “Shinhwa Company”, leader Eric went through a very tough time & had loooong negotiations with Jun Media to use Shinhwa’s trademark. And finally, after reaching an agreement, Eric’s dream came true & Shinhwa Company was established in 2011, marking Shinhwa as the first & only idol group to establish their own agency with their own name & personally run it.

But due to many legal issues concerning Jun Media, Shinhwa filed a lawsuit and leader Eric went to court against Jun Media in 2012. He went through hell again with many trials & appeals and having to temporarily change the company name to “ShinCom Ent.” during the 11th & 12th albums that were produced without Shinhwa’s name on them. Until finally In 2015, Shinhwa won and gained the full rights to their name after 12 years of a loooong thorny journey. This man, Eric, used to show up in varieties, all smiling & laughing, acting 4D & as 3 yrs old kid, while he had such huge burden over his shoulders, fighting for years for Shinhwa to continue with their own name. He makes me speechless!

Eric, who refused immense offers to go solo in 2003 and instead, he paid a HUGE sum of his own money (& almost went broke afterwards) to buy Shinhwa out and keep the group together under the same name. - He who studied law after the contract expiration in order to find a way to continue being active under the same name & went to court against mighty SM. - He who financed the suitcases from his own money & had to go to court continuously over those years of struggles. - He who had to put up with SM & Jun Media’s sneaky ways for 12 years, and successfully managed the long negotiations with Jun Media to establish Shinhwa Company in 2011. - He who got to keep the group intact and active all through those tough years. The members expressed their gratitude & thanks to Eric as he was the one who struggled the most during the the whole process. And even though he’s the key factor behind Shinhwa getting their name back, we haven’t seen Eric mention or brag about that for even once. The leader that always thinks of Shinhwa as family.

Eric has always been the dependable big brother to all the members. “I always think of the members as my real brothers”. And as a real brother, Eric is always there for the members when anyone of them faces troubles & does his best to help the members out.

Eric, to help Minwoo out, gathered the members & suggested that everyone of them contributes a sum of money so that they help Minwoo overcome his financial trouble as loyal brothers. This man continuously sets examples of how true friendship should be.

When Eric earned a large sum of money in CFs, he split up his pay and supported other members who had financial difficulties. When he was dominating CFs, he called the members to his house and gave them bonus money. He’s also filmed CFs originally meant for himself but he got the company to include the rest of the Shinhwa members.

Shinhwa’s appearance for China gag concert in 2015 was originally meant to have Eric as the only guest, but he refused & told the production team that if it wasn’t a SHINHWA segment, he wouldn’t attend. So, Shinhwa as OT6 was casted instead.

One of the things that make other groups disband is when the members care more about their solo work than the group itself. Then comes leader Eric, who leads by example. For his solo activities, he always thinks of “us” before “me”! his group always comes first.

To Eric, Shinhwa always comes as a top priority even before his solo work. When he does a solo activity, he does it because he knows it will benefit the group itself, not doing solo to shine away from the group. He does his solo work to promote Shinhwa.

Even when he gets a solo activity, he never decides on it by himself... Eric will first get the agreement of the members if there is something he wants to do for himself. If there is a solo activity that he wishes to do, he would first gather the opinions of the members & seek the agreements of all the members first!!. Seriously who ever does something like this?!!!! .. such an attitude of his sets an example of what made it possible for Shinhwa to promote separately and together. Eric: “Rather than my solo activities, Shinhwa’s activities are more important.”

another secret to longevity? it’s the leader’s genuine care and support to the other members’ solo activities. Eric always sets an example for others to follow.

Dongwan: “Eric always thinks about every member, and seeing how he helps make us take care of each other.“

Eric has always been a truly supportive & selfless Leader. Not being selfish & focusing only on his solo activities, but he always helps his members in their solo careers, showing ultimate support & encouragement to them & happily agrees to feature in their albums, and always expresses how proud he is as his members are doing great in their solos. While staying at home, he keeps on monitoring their performances & giving them very useful feedback & advises.

Eric: “Aside from our group activities, I’m really happy to see the members do well in their solo careers. If I can offer my help in any way, I’d like to help them continuously.”

& what does he gain in return for his massive help & as feat. fees in his members’ albums?! .. Pizza or sunglasses :D

Eric, the leader who leads from behind & puts the members in front. He doesn’t like to stand out and always stays away from the limelight, happily giving it to the members.

and there is always that noticeable thing about Leader Eric. He has always been supporting Shinhwa from the back since debut. Never been bossy. He always stays away from the limelight, happily giving it to the members. You’ll find him standing quietly in the interviews. So humble & quiet to the extend that many people are still not aware that Eric is the leader of Shinhwa. This is because he is a man with few words and doesn’t stand on the front of the group. His true features of taking care of his people shone brightly as him working behind the scenes. But when Shinhwa encounter a problem, he takes the front line, protecting the group & the members.

and after all of this, it’s expected that Eric will be thinking highly of himself as one of best leaders, if not the best .. but ..this man is so humble to an extend you can’t believe!

Another thing about Eric is that he never thinks highly of himself!! he’s one of the most humble people you can ever meet!!. Like he’s one of the best leaders, if not the best, the loyal, selfless & dependable leader that has been keeping Shinhwa for such a long time in the industry & still, he doesn’t think that he does something extraordinary!!

Seriously, how can he even be this humble?!!.. Eric, you’ve been setting standards of how ideal leadership is!

Whenever someone praises or says something nice about him, he’ll do some funny stuff to cut that person off & move to another subject. Like what he did in Shinhwa’s latest concert when Dongwan thanked him for his great efforts in getting the full rights to Shinhwa’s name back. Eric kept on kissing Dongwan to cut him off.

Or when someone praises his outer looks, & it’s known that Eric is one of the most handsome Korean celebs (he was dubbed Korea’s handsome representative) but he never brags about his handsomeness for even once, and when others tell him that he’s handsome, he’s gets so shy & flustered & tries to change topics.

and even though he’s the mighty Eric, with more than 20 years in the industry, regardless of his fame, he remains the humble Eric who still bows 90 degrees to even the hoobaes & the fans. Forever humble as Day 1. Eric really sets an example that no matter how famous you are, you should always be humble & down to earth with everyone.

and even during his solo activities, he seizes every chance to promote Shinhwa & the other members’ solo events.

Then there is this amazingly meaningful quote of Eric, that makes me feel so lucky for being a Shinhwa Changjo ..

“It’s impossible for Shinhwa to disband now even if we wanted to. Shinhwa doesn’t just belong to us, it also belongs to the fans and people who love us.”

To any group, before disbanding, think deeply of this quote. Your group doesn’t just belong to you, it also belongs to your fans & people who love you!

Now.. With every anniversary we celebrate with Shinhwa, the group that debuted in 1998 & still going strong with no disbandment & no member change, let’s forever remember that the main reason behind this is Eric, the best leader we could ever ask for. The leader who knew how to keep his group intact & overcome all troubles they’ve been through since debut. That troubles that could’ve easily made any other group disband. Eric always puts Shinhwa as a top priority over anything else .. To him, the group always comes first. He really lives for Shinhwa! “Eric is really like an otaku. If he gets addicted to something he’ll bury himself at home but after we left our first agency, as the leader of Shinhwa, he became the otaku of Shinhwa. Even now, he worries a lot for Shinhwa and is also in charge of dealing with external matters. He is a leader I’m thankful to and can trust.” - Dongwan

Thank you leader Eric for all of what you’ve done & still doing to Shinhwa. Thank you for keeping them as forever six .. thank you for always protecting us, Shinhwa Changjo .. Thank you for always protecting Orange .. Thank you for always protecting Shinhwa Company .. Thank you for always choosing Shinhwa over anything else no matter what the temptation is .. Everyone of us appreciates your great efforts & dedication for Shinhwa. Plz continue on leading Shinhwa for more anniversaries & more success. 2gether 4ever, walking on the same road. K-Pop in 2019: The Reckoning

I never imagined that my first post here would be about k-pop. I actually “founded” this tumblog a couple of years ago with the intent of writing personal think pieces that were separate from my very shit-posty original tumblog. Maybe it would be about life, maybe politics, maybe personal beliefs. Probably with the occasional shit post entry thrown in for humour. I really didn’t think k-pop would make a serious appearance here.

I would never have been able to predict the nuclear dumpster fire to detonate in 2019 that the Burning Molka (or Sun) scandal would become. I don’t think anyone would have been able to imagine a world where several major top pop stars in Korea, plus the head of one of the Big 3 entertainment agencies would see their careers implode at the speed of sound.

To be honest, I still just feel a whole lot of disappointment in Seungri. He was the maknae, always the butt of the brotherly jokes, the forgotten, or ~useless one in BIGBANG. *Insert “Tyra: We were all rooting for you” gif here.* That was Seungri. JJY sounds like a creep based on his earlier related scandal. People have speculated about Yang Hyun-Suk’s shady dealings for ages. As for Choi Jong-Hoon, Yong Jun-Hyung, Lee Jong-Hyun, Roy Kim, and Eddy Kim, I didn’t really pay attention to them as individuals to form any opinion on them beyond the music they released.

But this post is about Lee Minwoo. Because as much as I love BIGBANG, Shinwha has been one of my favourite groups for almost two decades.

I count Shinhwa as one of my top artists/groups EVER, not just within the context of K-pop. Minwoo was my first bias, even if I had no idea about the concept within the world of k-pop fandom. As I grew out of my youthful fangirl phase and into adulthood, I recognized that he served as a mentor to many junior artists in the entertainment industry. To me, he was a pioneering example of how someone could evolve from the rigid confines of the first generation k-pop robotic idol, into an artist who was in control of their own career and business dealings. Shinhwa was the first k-pop group to fight for the right to own their name, and they beat one of the Big 3 (the Granddaddy: SM Entertainment!) companies to do so. They can serve as examples for groups like Highlight (formerly BEAST, and coincidently Yong Jun-Hyung’s former group), and T-ARA who leave their original labels but go to court for the right to continue as a unit. Shinhwa is today the longest-running k-pop group with zero changes to their line-up (and no disbandments). First and second gen groups like H.O.T., TVXQ!, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, and Sechskies cannot say the same.

So, reading the breaking news story in early July that Minwoo had been accused of sexual harassment at a club was hard to take. I normally take zero issue with writing off celebrities who have been accused of, or convicted of sexual violence. Before #MeToo became a movement, my personal trauma of being raped in my mid-twenties had made me a staunch ally and advocate of the protection and rights of victims and survivors of sexual violence. For example, I grew up absolutely loving “The Cosby Show.” I still think it is one of the greatest shows of all time. But I cannot, and know I will not ever be able to watch another episode since Bill Cosby’s alleged crimes came to light in the flood of accusations a few years ago. At that point, what I had tried to dismiss as rumour became unavoidable and impossible to ignore.

I have honestly struggled with the news of Minwoo’s scandal. I hoped it was a stupid, one-off, drunken act. He would take time off to reflect, maybe seek help for alcohol abuse, maybe come back afterward as an humbled and apologetic person. I hoped it actually was just a misunderstanding. But as the days went by, I had to self-reflect and wonder why I took issue with standing with the women who made the original complaint.

No one likes to think of someone whom they admire to be with fault, and certainly not with a criminal fault. Junjin received backlash for saying that he was standing with Minwoo and that everything would be resolved soon if we all just believed in him. Like Minwoo was the Chanjo Tinkerbell. But I can understand where his comments are coming from. To him, Minwoo is not simply a bandmate or a co-worker; he is a brother. As a fan, I get it.

But this is a particularly precarious time for k-pop stars who have gone on for years in the comfort of knowing that their bad deeds were being covered up and taken care of; perhaps by agencies, perhaps by more powerful figures in the greater society. I am not saying that Minwoo must be a serial offender. Only time will bring any other truths to light, if they exist. I am saying that like the men previously mentioned, I do not believe that he will be able to come back from this.

Shinhwa will serve as an interesting case study, to say the least. Where FT Island’s Lee Hong Ki seemingly had no issue in immediately distancing himself from Choi Jong-hoon (see his epic “I eat well, I sleep well, I even poop well” comment to a fan), I can see that the other five members of Shinhwa will not be able to do so as easily. Shinhwa’s brotherhood of over twenty years has become as much, if not more of their brand as their music. I can see them choosing a passive Super Junior-esque route of quietly putting Minwoo on an unspoken but permanent hiatus until his “contract ends” and he decides to “retire” and relinquish his control as co-CEO of Shinhwa Company (see Kangin’s and Sungmin’s eternal hiatuses due to their own scandals. And I use that term very loosely regarding Sungmin because I think it’s ridiculous).

As of the date of this post, Minwoo and Eric Mun are listed as Shinhwa Company’s CEOs, but their official Twitter (which is in Korean) does not appear to make any mention of the accusations and investigation against Minwoo, and he did not receive the annual birthday salutation post on their Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts. Clearly, the members have chosen to be cautious, perhaps recognizing that this is a damaged ship with only two outcomes: bail out in a lifeboat for five, or sink as united captains.

Any of the members of Shinhwa could easily go their separate ways. Junjin and Hyesung have had successful solo releases in recent years, Dongwan has found recent success as an actor in dramas and musicals, Andy has been making a comeback in variety show appearances this year after his own gambling scandal, and Eric is one of the most popular commercial spokespersons, and drama actors in the industry. None would have to make an outspoken break with Minwoo in order to maintain the success of their solo ventures.

There is no doubt that Minwoo’s absence in Shinhwa would be noticed. He is a main vocalist, the choreographer, and one of the most recognizable faces of the group. Which leads me to ask myself, am I really just having trouble accepting the end of my teenaged idol fantasy? I am a grown woman, I like to think that I can take a hard stand, but I find myself stalling on this matter. Perhaps because Shinhwa has made so much of their brotherhood and senior status as their brand; they are the forever six. Shinhwa is not just a music group, it is each member. It is equally Eric, equally Hyesung, equally Dongwan, equally Andy, equally Junjin, and yes, equally Minwoo. I think that I am not ready to mourn the end of this group. I don’t think if they were to release another album that included Minwoo’s participation, that I would be able to support it.

Honestly, I hate that. I do feel let down. I feel disappointed. I feel lied to. And I feel silly for feeling these things because I’m not an 18 year old girl bumping her “weird” Korean music in her little car as she zips around her suburban Texas neighbourhood on a Friday night. I am an adult who just doesn’t want to let that girl go. I want to protect her from the bad things ahead. I want to protect myself.
