Do you think there is a way to ethically watch Sandman and Good Omens? What about Dead Boy Detectives?
Andddd this was why I originally turned off anons. I knew this was coming eventually, but I guess I'll respond just this once so everyone knows where I stand.
I don't love that I feel the need to disclose this, but I have personally experienced grooming and sexual assault in the past. So this post is coming from someone who has Been There and understands the importance of supporting victims. I also love all of the efforts NG-related fandoms have been putting into raising money for sexual assault charities. It's wonderful to see people rallying behind the survivors and supporting them so vocally.
- DEAD BOY DETECTIVES: NOT A GAIMAN WORK
I do not think that there is a world where Dead Boy Detectives would be unethical to stream. It has virtually nothing to do with Neil Gaiman, by his own admission, and is the brain-child of Steve Yockey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides the first chapter where Charles and Edwin were introduced (with no development), he didn't even write the comics! Several artists did, including Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham - whose run the show is based on and who the sprites are named after.
Yockey was the sole person to pitch DBDA to Warner Brothers. Gaiman did not do that.
Streaming Dead Boy Detectives primarily supports its writers, cast, and crew - Gaiman, who only wrote 2 scenes, is getting essentially nothing in terms of royalties.
Someone on Twitter did a really good job of unpacking why Dead Boy Detectives shouldn't be lumped in with Gaiman stuff - I'll link it here.
Tumblr media
But this leads me to the next section.
- HANDLING GOOD OMENS AND SANDMAN
I think that there are a lot of valid reactions to the way people handle the consumption of Gaiman's shows after what he has done.
Some people are going to be unable to stomach anything he has written, and that is okay. Others whose lives have been massively impacted by his work aren't going to be able to let go since - and I know people like to deny this, but it's true - the art you love more than love itself is going to have a serious material impact on your personality.
Both of these approaches are alright! The only incorrect approach is to harass those who disagree with your personal choices.
It also is, in my opinion, Bad to give Gaiman money. Purchasing his books and buying Good Omens official merch puts cash in his pocket.
Streaming the shows, though, is a little more nuanced to me.
I'm going to use Good Omens as an example here. I personally will not be continuing with Good Omens. It gives me a Yucky Feeling. I may one day change my mind and stream a pirated version, but I don't think so.
However, I don't think Sheen and Tenant's fans are wrong to stream it in support of the actors who have brought their favourite characters to life.
But this leads me into my next point, and the point that will probably get me Canceled.
- THE IMPACT OF SHOWS ON PEOPLE
The way that people handle their favourite shows post-allegations is going to depend on the impact that the show had on their life.
I like Good Omens. It's a fun show. I enjoyed it while watching it, and think (see: thought) positively of it. But it had no real deep impact on my life - it's not part of me. When I look at Good Omens now, I see Gaiman's work above the finished product. It puts a sour taste in my mouth.
But in a hypothetical world, if Dead Boy Detectives were a Gaiman production? I have the self-awareness to know that I probably would still stream it to support the cast and crew. I am attached enough to it that I think I would divorce it entirely from Gaiman (if he were the creator, which he is not.) My point is that other people who are still streaming Sandman and GO probably don't look at it and see Gaiman. They see something that they have absorbed into themselves.
The part that's going to get me canceled is that if George cameos in Sandman, I will stream that one (1) episode to support George Rexstrew (Edwin Payne's actor). This is because Edwin has had a material impact on my life (hilariously, because I am a sexual violence survivor who did not get justice, and Edwin did not get justice for his murder and fights for that.) I feel that Edwin is part of me and my life, because Edwin (and George's work as Edwin) has made me feel less alone.
A lot of people feel that way about Crowley and Aziraphale.
I think that asking people to ditch a show, characters, and performers that have had a deep impact on their lives is unfair to them. Like, yes, Neil Gaiman is a bag of shit! Anyone who defends him is also a bag of shit! But I don't think that it's fair to stop people from supporting works that have had big material impacts on their own lives.
- HOW TO PROCEED
TL;DR
My personal ideal outcome here would be:
Wrap up Good Omens with the 90-minute movie and nothing else.
Wrap up Sandman with season 2, and do not renew.
Revive Dead Boy Detectives WITH THE CAVEAT that Gaiman gets his name removed from it, even if he currently isn't making much money off it. Take the Sandman characters and references from DBDA and let it become its own standalone thing.
Cancel all future Gaiman productions and never hire him to work on television or anything else again.
Let Gaiman's career die entirely and let him fade into obscurity.
Arrest Gaiman, which will never happen but it should.
I think people should:
Stop giving Neil Gaiman money through books or merch.
Make their own decisions about whether or not to officially stream the shows in support of the actors and crew members who have worked hard on it.
Not harass anyone for either their decision to stream the show, not stream the show, or stream a pirated version of the show.
Engage as much as they want with fandom and fanworks, as they are divorced from the source material's creator.
Vocally speak up against Neil Gaiman. Amplify the voices of the survivors, and don't let fear for the future of your show get in the way of that. At the end of the day, real women were put through the most traumatic and horrifying experience of their lives, and that's what matters most.

Thoughts literally no one asked for but I want to share anyway: Why I'm still supporting Dead Boy Detectives
And some facts on his connection to a show I've fought for for the last several months
What is being made is as important to me as how something is made. And after I first watched Dead Boy Detectives and later learned what a positive experience it was for literally everyone involved, I knew I had to champion it.
Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, the showrunners, took extra care to make sure the set was a safe space for everyone who worked there. Crew members have mentioned on a Reddit thread that they mourned the cancellation not so much because of lost income, but because they wouldn't have the chance to return to a work environment that truly valued them, that respected them, and that made them love coming to work every day.
And Steve and Beth took care to make sure the writers were diverse.* This is important, because they pulled together a team of people from marginalized and diverse backgrounds to tell a story about characters who are also marginalized and from diverse backgrounds. Many of the creatives are members of the LGBTQIA community. They were strategic about casting, too. Only two characters of the main cast are white, and one of them is gay; everyone else is a POC. Niko's character was created from the ground up by Steve and her actress, Yuyu Kitamura.
Steve and Beth were intentional about their choices. I mentioned crew members above, but I want to clarify that writers and cast alike have commented, repeatedly, how safe and respected they felt on set.*
This is not the norm in Hollywood, and the choice to create in that way needs to be recognized.
And in this political climate? Queer media matters now more than ever.
As we sift through discourse regarding social responsibility and accountability when it comes to consuming media and art, the phrase, “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” comes to mind. Nuance matters. Details matter.
Of course he-who-shall-not-be-named needs to be held accountable. But the fact remains that he was only very loosely connected to Dead Boy Detectives. He wasn't associated with it at all until it moved to Netflix late in production and incorporated the two cameos from The Sandman. His writing credits total under 11 minutes of the 8 episode series (just those two scenes). He was never on set. He never met the cast in person. He had no creative input on the series, which he has stated multiple times. Additionally, the story isn't even based on his works; it's based on the comics by Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham. Lastly, it's worth noting he does not own the rights to the show. Steve Yockey owns the Dead Boy Detectives, and Warner Brothers has production rights.
His loose connections cannot be allowed to overshadow all the GOOD that this show did, both in it's making and in the story it tells. How art is made matters. And art that is created with kindness and respect for our fellow humans, that gives voices to marginalized people, that allows viewers who are vastly underrepresented in the media to finally see themselves represented on screen?
That's huge. That resonates with people. It's life changing and sometimes even life saving. It's a lantern in the dark, and it gives people hope.
And that matters. Quite a bit, actually. And it deserves to be championed.
It deserves to be saved. ------------------------- *Info regarding writers and set culture is largely gleaned from creators social media accounts, posts/public fan interaction, director interviews, and gameos/gameodens. For more nitty gritty on exactly what his involvement looks like in Dead Boy Detectives, this link has a ton of solid info:

Benny & Joel
Tumblr media
I am absolutely dying over this piece of art that the wonderful @bumblepony surprised me with, commissioned from the amazingly talented @miranhas-art (who has made some of my favorite Pedro character art on Tumblr). Based on a scene from chapter 15 of As Long as You Follow:
Sometimes these evenings were a little different. Sometimes wine flowed a little more generously (for her) while familiar music played from Alexei’s CD player. He danced with her now whenever she asked him to, without protest, because he didn’t have it left in him to ever again deny her anything that he had the power to give. She was at her happiest when he twirled her slowly around the living room, and there was something nostalgic about these steps – something familiar that pulsed under his skin when she laughed as he lifted her arm and carefully spun her, something so free about how she always danced barefoot, her hair swaying back and forth against her back, something special about the way she always kissed him first, because even when he led their steps, she led everything else –
– something exciting about the afternoon where Ellie left a little earlier than usual, sunlight still spearing through the tall living room windows while Lindsey Buckingham crooned through the stereo speakers and Benny twirled through the motes of dust lazily, a glass of wine in one hand, her hair glittering in the light. She and Ellie had gone to the beach earlier in the day when he’d been occupied with fixing the balcony door, and she’d donned another donated dress for the occasion; a cascade of white with splashes of emerald leaves and blossoms, the skirt loose and flowing, and when she danced, a bittersweet thought struck Joel: that this was probably the closest he would ever get to seeing her in anything that even remotely resembled a wedding gown.
Sunburn kissed her shoulders with a rosy glow, a blush mirroring the flush on her cheeks, and when she beckoned for him to join her, curling two fingers in and out as she swayed, he did so with no hesitation, drawn to her like a moth to a flame – though he took her hand, first, spun her around slowly, and then wrapped her up against him from behind, all the better to trail his lips down her neck and over her shoulder, leaving fleeting white marks against her heated and red skin. And there was just something about this that felt different even when it was achingly familiar; there was a rawness to it, an uninhibited surrender in the way she tilted her head back with a longing sigh, finding rest against his shoulder, the way she tipped the wine to her lips and drank long sips, then held it up so he could do the same.
I put these two through so much - and I love that when the opportunity arises, people choose to show them in their better, happier moments. ♥️

Four months of weekly band practice and separate weekly writing sessions, and The Spitfires were getting ready for their first gig. Eddie had been able to get them a gig at The Hideout, a Tuesday night when nothing else was on, but it was something.
The practice they had before they packed up and went to The Hideout was filled with nervous energy and tension. Steve and Eddie did nothing but snip at each other in between songs and sometimes even during songs. Both Robin and Chrissy were glad when it came time to split them up, pack up, and head off to the venue.
Tuesday night at The Hideout was a quiet one, almost no one else was there, just a handful of drunks and a handful of teenagers not old enough to drink but just hanging out. They got set up and then went to mingle with people in the bar.
“I haven’t seen you here before, handsome. What’s the name?” a girl asked Steve as she stood beside him at the bar.
“First time here beautiful, can I get you a drink and you can tell me what brings a lady such as yourself to this bar? I’m Steve Harrington” Steve replied smoothly, placing a hand on the small of her back and turning back to the bar.
“If you’re done being a slut Harrington, we’ve got a set to play” Eddie interrupted the pair an hour later, finding them making out in a corner.
“The fuck is your problem? Just having a great time here with the lovely Melanie” Steve responded, sitting back and away from the girl.
“It’s Stephanie” The girl scowled at him.
“Yeah, yeah whatever. Anyway Munson, what do you want? I know the time. I’ll be there in a moment.” Steve shrugged.
“We’ve got to be on stage in 10 minutes, you need to get ready” Eddie fumed, walking away.
“I’d better go, sweetheart,” Steve sighed, “see you after the set?” he asked.
“Sure, get the impression you’ll be a good fuck” She replied, shrugging and moving away to join her friends again.
The girls had already got changed, lots of giggling and them taking much longer than needed told Eddie that they hadn’t been fully on task the whole time. They emerged with red cheeks, messy hair, and slightly marked-up necks but both looking amazing. Robin wore a pair of dark jeans and a The Clash t-shirt with large rips down the side that had been ‘repaired’ with safety pins and a pair of Doc Martin boots. A spiked faux leather bracelet, a choker, safety pin earrings, and a flash of neon eyeshadow finished the look off. Chrissy had a short black skirt coupled with dark purple fishnets and an Iron Maiden t-shirt she’d cut and tied at the sides with a pair of New Rock boots on. Dainty rings on all bar one of her fingers and huge winged eyeliner, sharp enough to cut paper, and dangly pentagram earrings completed her look. Eddie was in the middle of changing his trousers and shirt when the door opened and he heard a strangled noise from behind him.
“Everything ok?” he asked, turning to the source of the noise, Steve.
“Yeah, yeah, everything’s ok.” The other man replied, clearing his throat and walking over to his own bag to get changed.
Less than 5 minutes later, without another word being said but with a whole load of tension in the room, both boys were ready to go on stage. Eddie was wearing a very tight pair of jeans with a baggy mesh top on, chunky rings adorning his fingers, and a big pair of black and silver New Rocks boots. Steve was wearing just a pair of cargo pants that seemed perfectly tailored to his ass and thighs and black studded belt and a pair of heavy work boots.
Standing at the edge of the stage they all took a big deep breath and collected their thoughts. It may only be a small crowd but if they wanted to go somewhere with this they had to start somewhere. They knew they needed to impress the crowd but also Benny. Playing here week after week would really help them go far as a band.
“Now I know we don’t normally have a band on a Tuesday night but this is a treat for you all. Playing their very first gig right here at The Hideout, give it up for The Spitfires.” Benny said before stepping down from the stage as the band stepped up.
“Good evening beautiful people! We’re The Spitfires and every song you hear tonight is one we wrote, so enjoy” Eddie shouted into the mic before Steve counted them into the first song.
Song after song the set went on, the whole band beaming as they sang and played each one. Each of them was as energetic as they could be. Eddie, Robin, and Chrissy running all around the stage singing into each other's mics and with each other a lot of the time.
“We’ve been The Spitfires and you’ve been amazing. Catch us at the bar in a few minutes if you want to chat, but that's the end of the set” Eddie panted into the mic 60 minutes later. Before setting his guitar down and reaching for a bottle of water that Benny had set for them at the side of the stage.
The crowd cheered and clapped for them as they all sat instruments down and walked off the stage.
“That was amazing!” Chrissy squealed, throwing herself at Eddie.
“Yeah well done everyone, totally killed it out there” Eddie beamed at them all.
“Get a shirt back on dingus, let's go get a drink!” Robin declared, tweaking one of Steve's nipples and walking off towards the bar, Chrissy and Eddie quickly following her.
“Eddie, babe, care to get out of here?” A man asked as he walked up to the group, a little while later, completely ignoring the rest of the band sitting there.
“Hey Jason” Eddie smiled at the stranger, Jason apparently, and very obviously checked him out “Yeah absolutely,” he answered the blonde in front of him. “See you guys tomorrow for writing?” He questioned the band before walking off and joining Jason on the way out the door.
“Did he just ditch us to get laid?” Steve suddenly blurted, leaning his head to the side so he could see around Stephanie who had been on his lap for the past 15 minutes.
“Erm yes I believe that’s what just happened, didn’t think you’d notice though, what with being too busy with Janie and all,” Chrissy responded, an icey tone evident in her voice.
“It's Stephanie,” The girl mumbled.
“Whatever Chris,” Steve huffed. “Shall we get out of here babe?” Steve whispered to the girl on his lap.
Tumblr media
“Want to tell me what that was last night” Robin questioned Steve as soon as she sat in the passenger seat.
“What was what?” He replied frowning at her as he started to drive towards Chrissy’s.
“You being all over that girl, in front of everyone, and then getting your knickers in a twist over Eddie leaving with that guy, very obviously to have sex by the way, in case you missed that.”
“Oh, that” Steve sniffed, suddenly very interested in the road, “It was nothing, just he left abruptly is all and she approached me, what else was I meant to do when a babe wants to fuck?”
“Steve, you either need to do something about your feelings or you need to move on. Using someone to try and make him jealous isn’t fair” She smiled sadly at him.
Tumblr media
“EDWARD MUNSON” Chrissy shouted at him as soon as he entered the garage.
“I know ok, I should have said no.” He sighed.
“Going home with Jason was not the answer last night, at all. He’s bad news. Just because Steve had some chick all over him does not mean you get to self-destruct, ok” Chrissy whispered into his neck as she hugged him.

Fav artist for Garth?
I have been thinking about this ask for multiple hours, and I am unsure if I can pick a true favorite because there are so many wonderful artists who have drawn Garth over the years! However, I think I built a pretty solid list of my top 5 artists for Garth (oops!), so here goes:
#1: Phil Jimenez
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have so much love for the way he draws (and writes) Garth! Of every artist out there, I feel he has the most love for drawing Garth and I can feel that care and attention to detail in all his work. I am absolutely in love with the way he draws Garth's expressions too! He allows him to have exaggerated expressions and really allow us to feel the emotions of the story through the art. He's not afraid of showing him in painful and less than idealistic moments, and allows his face to reflect that. I think it's something that a lot of current comic book artists shy away from for fear of making characters look "ugly." But Jimenez goes all in on it and still makes Garth look stunning 24/7!
#2: Ramona Fradon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ramona Fradon was one of the co-creators of Garth, and was, in my opinion, one of the most incredible people in the comic's art industry. She sadly passed away last month at age 97, and she only just announced her retirement from art a month prior to her passing. Her influence on the industry, especially for female artists, was monumental, and her art style stood out so uniquely amongst others. I've always loved how fantastical her art is. She creates fascinating underwater creatures and has an absolutely precious way of drawing Garth. I appreciate that she made the decision to draw him looking as young as he was at the time, especially since a lot of other teen sidekicks were drawn to look older. I feel very lucky that I was able to get a piece of art from her (the first pic in this section!) around the time of her passing. I will treasure it forever!
#3: Nick Cardy
Tumblr media
There is something so charming about the way that Nick Cardy draws Garth! There's a simplicity and retro feeling to it that comes off as so fun! I don't know exactly what it is about his art, but it always makes me smile!
4: Mark Buckingham
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buckingham's style is like if "stretch and squash animation" was a static art style, and I LOVE it. It looks so funky and bouncy and expressive! It's one of those styles that I don't think everyone loves, but it really works for me and makes the comics extremely enjoyable to read for the art alone! It's not super polished and has some rough edge qualities, but that's precisely why I like it!
5: Lucas Meyer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meyer is a newcomer in the scene of comics, but WOW! I am not immune to how gorgeous his art style is. I'm so happy that he's been named the ongoing artist for the current series! (Even if I can't get good writing, I'll at least take the nice art!) I think his style is so clean and pretty. I do wish that he went more "all-in" on expressions sometimes, as I do feel that his characters all look slightly generically pretty and don't emote particularly much. That said, the art is undeniably gorgeous, and he's already skyrocketed himself up onto my personal favorites list despite only starting with DC in 2022.
I do have a few honorable mentions as well, which include: Ivan Reis and George Perez.
There have been plenty of artists who did a great job, but these are my personal favorites! Thank you so much for the ask!

Cardinal Wolsey: A Life In 9 Artworks
I won't lie I love history and I have been re-watching a lot of the Tudors which brought on the inspiration for this blog.
So Cardinal Wolsey’s life, marked by immense power and ultimate downfall, has inspired numerous artworks.
These pieces offer a visual chronicle of his journey from glory to despair, allowing modern viewers to witness pivotal moments of his life.
Tumblr media
This artwork marks Wolsey’s early rise, depicting his procession to Westminster Hall in 1515 when he became a cardinal. Gilbert, fascinated by Wolsey, frequently revisited his life in art, capturing significant moments. In this piece, Wolsey holds a pomander, reflecting his historical concern with disease prevention.
Tumblr media
This painting highlights the close relationship between Wolsey and King Henry VIII. The Cardinal appears focused and diligent beside a relaxed and trusting Henry, illustrating their bond during Wolsey's height of influence.
Tumblr media
This detailed artwork portrays the grand summit between England and France in 1520, organized by Wolsey. Though the scene is a composite, it captures the event’s opulence. Wolsey, depicted modestly beside King Henry, orchestrated this massive and ultimately politically futile event.
Tumblr media
This piece illustrates the intense rivalry between Wolsey and Buckingham, culminating in the Duke’s execution in 1521. Gilbert captures their mutual animosity in a chance encounter, with expressive faces revealing their deep-seated hatred.
Tumblr media
Lucas’s painting reflects Wolsey’s fall from grace. Depicted with King Henry and Thomas Cramner, Wolsey’s sorrow is palpable as he faces his downfall, highlighted by the ominous presence of a raven, symbolizing his imminent demise.
Tumblr media
A satirical take on Wolsey’s forced resignation in 1529, this drawing shows him tearfully handing over the Great Seal. Originally intended for humour, it underscores the poignancy of his loss of power and favour with the King.
Tumblr media
Depicting Wolsey’s final moments in 1530, this engraving shows him surrounded by loyal companions at Leicester Abbey. Cavendish, his faithful servant, is depicted weeping at his side, highlighting the Cardinal’s tragic end.
Tumblr media
This simple sketch from Wolsey’s biography captures his solemn burial at Leicester Abbey. Despite the crude execution, it serves as a historical record of his final resting place, though its exact location remains a mystery.
Tumblr media
In this compilation of eminent British figures, Wolsey is honoured alongside historical greats. Created 150 years after his death, this miniature portrayal underscores his lasting significance in English history.
These nine artworks encapsulate Cardinal Wolsey’s dramatic life, from his meteoric rise to his tragic fall, immortalizing his legacy in vivid detail. I honestly find him a fascinating character of history.

Summer 2024: Three Trips
Our Summer 2024 was pretty much marked by three big trips we took, and all other activities and goings-on were organized around them. Two days after school let out, our family boarded a transatlantic flight for the SECOND time in a year - destination: London! I’d been dreaming of a London vacay for a few years at this point, since our homeschooling days - and we finally made it happen this year.
Tumblr media
We hit all the major historical sites and tourist attractions: Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, various museums, Windsor Castle, and more. But more than the sites - we really enjoyed big-city life, taking the tube everywhere, walking (notably, we logged 11 miles one day!), and EATING AMAZING FOOD from all kinds of international cuisines. We did NOT want to come home.
Once we were home from our week across the pond, we had a ten-day period of true summer vacation, where the kids had no structured activities, and we got to veg out at home, run random errands, and be in a less-hurried mode than usual. In and around this time, some miscellaneous things happened. We got into a family routine of watching nightly episodes of the anime show, “Naruto.” Vev got braces on his teeth. We took Ajima and Thatha out for an anniversary lunch at their favorite South Indian restaurant. And I did a quick getaway to the North Georgia mountains with three girlfriends for a winery/spa weekend, which was relaxing. There were other random things too.
Tumblr media
Soon enough, it was the week of July 4th, and time for trip #2: Washington DC, to see my sister Rithers and her family. This time, Ajima and Thatha joined us in our travels. Family reunion! Cousin time!
Tumblr media
Luna the Dog is always a big part of our visits to Rithers’ house. She’s a big personality, and we accept her for who she is. And who she is, is very barky 😂 but we love her for it.
Anyway! Upon return from this five-day jaunt, the kids immediately started up with four weeks of summer camp. This year, they both did Art Camp, and then Dey tried Robotics again, while Vev returned to Video Production. They had a good time.
Camp ended, and it was time for our last hurrah: trip #3, a few days in Destin, FL with a group of our college friends and their children. We rented a giant Airbnb house right on the beach with a pool, hot tub, game room, and space for everyone to sleep in a bed. It was a noisy, laughter-filled, sunny blast.
Tumblr media
We returned from Destin and had a turnaround of about three days, till school started! I honestly believe that more than ever before, we squeezed every last drop out of our summer break this year.

Did you not like the comics?
I assume you mean the DBDA comics.
Short answer: I only enjoyed the Litt/Buckingham run, and I liked it a Normal Amount.
Long answer: One of the reasons I avoid American comics is the lack of consistency. Some writers really understand the characters and have the talent to execute great storylines; others, not so much. They're passed around too much to make a blanket, holistic quality judgment.
I did not like the majority of the comic very much. I don't like to bitch about it because a) it doesn't impact my enjoyment of the show, and b) I don't want to slap the hand that fed me. But do I like a chapter where Edwin pinches a girl's ass and then kisses her without consent when she protests? Do I like Charles's drooling heart-eyes at random girls in some of them? Do I like how immature the characters feel? No. I'm also not a fan of the art style in most of them, and the bond between Edwin and Charles feels muted to me.
HOWEVER, I DID REALLY LIKE THE TOBY LITT/MARK BUCKINGHAM RUN.
I actually bought it on my Nook as well as in print!
While it did not hit me hard in the way that the TV show did, I feel like it had the same soul and essence of the show. The tone was similar and I liked the way Charles and Edwin's friendship was portrayed. It was a very different story, and the younger characters and lack of campy queerness made it less my thing. Also found Edwin escaping Hell on a random chance annoying because I find his personal escape journey fascinating in the show.
But I adore Buckingham's art style and Litt clearly had a great grasp of the characters. You can feel how much they cared about the series and how much pride they took in their work, and I really respect that. I especially love the chapters where Charles has to hold Edwin's hand 24/7 so he doesn't float away like a balloon. I'm also pretty sure that this is the run the show was based on (toby LITT(y) and mark buKINGHAM, btw). so you'll see me adding some references to it in Starting Line like Great Aunt Araminta and Blinking Flip!

Princess Anne’s Country Life guest edit: The inside story of putting together a magazine with The Princess Royal
Country Life | Published 29 July 2020
Paula was the Co-ordinating Editor of the special issue, which was guest-edited by The Princess to mark her forthcoming 70th birthday — a 172-page edition of the magazine highlighting The Princess’s deep love for and thorough understanding of the countryside and those who live and work in it.
‘Working with a small team from The Princess’s office at Buckingham Palace, we overcame the challenges of working from home across the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic to pull together an eclectic edition that truly reflects the issues and the country people that The Princess holds dear,’ says Paula, who compiled the magazine from her kitchen table in Dorset.
‘Working to a list of features supplied by The Princess in February, we quickly marshalled our best writers and photographers to write about and photograph all the subjects requested, while adhering to social distancing rules,’ Paula continues.
‘This involved commissioning one of the very best Scotland-based gardens photographers to illustrate a beautiful, but far-flung garden, surrounding the Ruuval lighthouse on Islay, plus our Picture Editor, Lucy Ford, organising lots of individual open air photo shoots with The Princess’s nominated champions of the countryside.’
Tumblr media
The magazine’s Deputy Editor Kate Green and freelance photographer Sarah Farnsworth were also delighted to be invited to The Princess’s home at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire, to illustrate her dedication to organic farming and rare breeds.
Once all the words and pictures were ready, the work of putting together the pages could began.
‘Once we’d gathered all articles and images, our talented design team — led by our Art Editor, Emma Earnshaw — set to work creating a series of eye-catching layouts, which were then expertly fitted by our Chief Sub-Editor, Octavia Pollock’ Paula continues. ‘It was a massive effort on behalf of the entire team, including our Photographic Library Manager, Melanie Bryan, who met me just off the A303 to hand over the page proofs ahead of our meeting with The Princess.
‘Having sent nigh on 1,000 emails and made countless telephone calls, we are really proud of the edition and the way it reflects The Princess’s commitment to the countryside and more than 300 patronages,’ enthuses Paula, who, along with Country Life’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Hedges met The Princess at Gatcombe in mid-July to go through the final page proofs.
The issue also includes a 2,000-word leader article, which The Princess wrote on her own iPad, in which she credits her parents for instilling her appreciation of Nature — ‘Both my parents had a love and understanding of the natural world through their own experiences’ — and explains how fortunate she feels to have spent ‘most of my life in the countryside’.
Mark Hedges concludes: ‘It was an absolute delight to have The Princess Royal as our guest editor. Her passion for the countryside shines through with every feature, combined with her concerns that the right action is taken to safeguard the rural way of life for future generations, from providing affordable housing to dealing with fly tipping. We do hope our special edition makes a very fitting 70th birthday present.’
