I’m pulling this from twitter (which you can follow me @thebardisabird there as well!) cause it’s fun to think about.

I had thoughts about the matsus and the kind of aprons they’d wear in the kitchen (And I’d love to hear what you guys think they’d cook or bake!):

Osomatsu’s red apron I feel like either says something silly or has like a simple word on it. So he either has like a “Enjoy the Sausage” with an arrow pointing down on it or it’ll say like… “ビール” (Beer)

Karamatsu’s is not only blue, oh no, it’s sequined. The lettering on it says “Kiss the Cook” in gold and there are sequined red kisses all over the thing. It’s his pride and joy after his guitar and leather jacket.

Choromatsu’s is a simple green, but it has a nifty lil pocket at the chest that it printed white with green stripes.

Ichimatsu’s is lilac with little white paw prints all over it. The paw prints are textured, made to look like a cat left prints there after stepping in flour.

Jyushimatsu’s is his signature sunshine yellow! On it are two cute little pictures: one of a piece of bacon & the other of a sunny side up egg 🥓 🍳

Todomatsu’s is sweetheart pink, the ends having a lace trim and it has an stitched in embroidery of a slice of strawberry shortcake around the heart area

Osomatsu-san the Movie (2022)

Consider the following: KaraNozo but in a fairytale, like Cinderella!

Cinderella!Kara is already a very Karabita story in my brain 🙈 But what about Sleeping Beauty? Don't you think that'd suit Nozomi nicely?

In this version of the story, Karamatsu and Nozomi meet while Nozomi is made to live on her own to keep her safe from the curse placed on her by an evil witch who looks suspiciously like Iyami. Karamatsu meets her accidentally, and he doesn't disclose that he's a prince from the neighboring kingdom because Nozomi is quick to assume that he's a bard and he's still his anxious teen self.

Maybe in this version of the story she helps him build up his confidence little by little? She's isolated for the most part, so I think she'd appreciate a ridiculous guy who likes to sing and knows a lot of stories and plays, and secretly wants to be a performer. When he's not helping her with the chores necessary to sustain herself + her godmother (Dayon? Eh why not), they're telling stories together.

I'm thinking that when Nozomi turns 20 and is finally allowed to go back home on the day of her birthday, she leaves a letter to Karamatsu explaining who she is and where to find her. Which he only finds after the prophecy has been fulfilled, and Nozomi has accidentally pierced her finger and plunged her kingdom into deep sleep.

From then on, the Matsuno brothers (but mainly Osomatsu and Choromatsu, since one WILL be king and the other one is convinced he WILL marry into a throne) spend a lot of time trying to get into Nozomi's cursed kingdom, which is full of overgrown plants and ghosts that and other obstacles that make it difficult to get to wherever Nozomi is.

Those two also spend a lot of time sabotaging each other (lol), while Karamatsu simply trails along because he of course KNOWS Nozomi, and he feels weird about the fact that they were both keeping secret their royal origins to each other, and besides the prophecy says that only true love's kiss can wake Nozomi, and he's afraid of getting there and finding out that the love he feels for Nozomi isn't true love (because of the lies), or that perhaps it isn't reciprocated.

I... Kind of like the idea that at one point, while sokudo are pointlessly fighting the cursed kingdom and each other, Karamatsu sees Jyushimatsu arrive from afar, with a message from Queen Matsuyo who's wondering what on earth is taking them so long.

Jyushimatsu arrives with her betrothed, Lady Homura, who was actually a courtesan from a fiefdom that had been seeking the Matsunos favour. For a long time in their relationship, Homura tried to keep her office a secret from Jyushimatsu; She introduced herself as just a random noble girl, and she relished that Jyushimatsu would interact with her without the weirdness and expectations that surrounds the title or courtesan.

When Jyushimatsu proposed to her, she had to come clean, and had been ready to be turned down, only to find out that Jyushi had already figured out who she was and it just didn't matter to him.

Karamatsu had known the basics of the story from Osomatsu, but I think listening to it from Jyushi and Homura would inspire him. Maybe they figure out that all his questions and interest in what they think of their circumstances goes beyond casual curiosity? Hah, maybe he goes as far as to show them Nozomi's letter and explain a little bit of his circumstances.

As you'd expect from them, they encourage Karamatsu to try. Homura reasons that as long as the care they have for each other is genuine (and it was), they'll figure out everything else once Nozomi wakes up. Besides, it sounded like Nozomi really appreciated Karamatsu's kindness, so that should be all he needs to show in order to prove the verity of his feelings.

Jyushimatsu, in true "I can be a meta little guy" fashion, adds that if it's not him it's definitely not going to be their perverted Onii-san let alone the rising Fappymatsu third, and so he should hurry up and get to Nozomi because of its not Karamatsu, then it's definitely none of them, so what are you waiting for nii-san!?

Encouraged by this interaction, Karamatsu finally makes an effort to go find Nozomi. In true Karamatsu fashion, he takes Homura's words ("show your kindness") literally, and he starts trying to charm and get directions from ghosts, ask the plants that have taken the street to allow him to pass, etc.

Incredibly, it works? Although if the plants sometimes throw him through the airs instead of letting him pass a la Moses, and if the ghosts sometimes vanish like dust to the wind when Karamatsu sparkles in their general direction, that's a different matter lol. The important thing is that he starts making way more progress than anyone has in the month they've been there, and progress increases exponentially when he finds a tiny green-eyed cat in the castle who helps him navigate the inner rooms until he gets to Nozomi.

You can imagine how it ends, it's a fairytale and it's Karamatsu so it'll be cheesy haha. He probably finds Nozomi crumpled on the floor besides a spinning wheel. He rearranges her so she's lying on his lap. He is too nervous about kissing her and it being for naught, so he ends up talking to her sleeping form, mentioning the card and what he learned from her, admitting to his own secret, apologising for not telling her sooner ("I liked that you weren't expecting a second to the throne from me; with you I forgot of all the things I've never been good at, and all I ever thought about was the things that we like"), admitting that he's afraid that those little lies between them wont be enough for the curse, but reassuring her that at least on his side he cares as much for the Nozomi that lived alone in the forest with her weird godmother, as he does for the one that is a princess.

He then takes her hand and kisses her (note: idk I really dislike the kiss on the lips of a sleeping person trope 😔 I also think that Karamatsu saw Osomatsu doing some distasteful jokes (in his defense, he really was only joking, trying to get a rise out of his siblings) and was put away of it by him too lol. He would have gone for the cheek afterwards anyway). To his surprise, the cat that had been guiding him, and who had been listening internally, started glowing before his eyes, until it shattered over them, gentle white light raining over their figure and slowly gathering on top of Nozomi's sleeping figure.

Nozomi's eyes flutter open not long afterwards, and despite looking a bit drowsy, she squeezes Karamatsu's hand and says "I'm glad you came". Karamatsu has a lot of questions, but he decides that all of them can wait. He helps Nozomi sit down and they hug promptly after, mumbling about how they missed each other, how Karamatsu is just Karamatsu to Nozomi too, how Nozomi always knew that things would be okay as long as it was Karamatsu who found her, how Karamatsu will be there to help her through whatever will come, etc.

Osomatsu and Choromatsu find them like that and at that point all hell breaks loose lol. There's only so much complaining they can do in good faith after they see them hugging as they are, and especially after Nozomi allows Karamatsu to princess carry her, so after a while they get over it and they finally go reunite the princess with her parents.

Ooh! So, ya know how a few days ago you were talking about how the first fic you wrote was a choromatsu x reader fic? I suddenly remembered you mentioning that the first fic you wrote was a time loop fic and now I’m curious as to what the plot for that was

Also, I just came to the realization that I don’t have to scroll through my following list to find your account, I can just use the search button. I know this is probably like really obvious to everyone except for me but I am very excited about this!

okay so the plot was essentially like. it starts out super normal right. for a WHILE its a normal x reader was the idea. like you get you (reader) just hanging out with the boys and getting closer to them, though i really wanted to focus on choromatsu at the time. long after this fic was deleted, i also had the idea of making it be like a multiple-choice thing so i have a bunch of chapters with the same numbers with different letters beside them to differentiate choices, which was ALSO going to play into the fic. i wasnt really that far into the story when i deleted it, so i couldve reasonably added chapters where you get to know all the boys and get closer to them. but yeah you think its normal youre lulled into a false sense of security and then i was going to reveal the time loop like BAM theres a time loop. and it was going to become CRAZY TOWN in there but i never got to that part because i was very flustered and frustrated with it. but choromatsu was aware of it and then the reader became aware of it

i also had the idea of it being like. the end of the choromatsu route feels like its all settled and done with but then it reveals its not. the loop keeps going or the reader resets. and then if a reader was really curious they could go through the other x reader chapters and see what the fuck is going on and it would basically be like There is no proper end. and the whole thing hinges on the fact that you, the reader, are NOT COMPLIANT WITH THE CANON OF THE UNIVERSE. you DO NOT EXIST in this story and you SHOULDNT. this SHOULDNT be something thats happening and YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS. i wanted it to get really meta and the horror was going to be amazing i had a scene planned where the reader goes to hang out with one of the boys, walks into the house, and theres nothing there and you just get to talk to god. i wanted it to very quickly spiral out of control with the multiple options that you could respond with and for the text of god to become very jumbled and nonsensical (because theyre answering ALL THE RESPONSES instead of JUST ONE because there is NO WAY to tell which response you choose in the format i was writing the story in) until you get to the end, where god kicks you out and tells you to keep going. i wanted the final chapters to be either a) the reader systematically removing themselves from the story as a selfless act for the boys or b) the reader KEEPS FIGHTING the will of the universe until the fic collapses in on itself. like the universe just gives up and you can TELL it just gives up. the universe lets out a final breath

talking about it you realise that this is a really huge idea that really i could not do on my own. i think that i could write an individual story like this and i do love the idea of meta-commentary, ive always wanted to get meta in my stories, but this is a REALLY BIG idea. especially considering there are six brothers? and because they are six different people, there needs to be six different plots? like yeah im not doing that . sure its all going to eventually focus on the time loop but like. i need to keep lulling the people who choose osomatsu into a false sense of security until he learns about the time loop.

and also its juggling a reader that may or may not know theyre in a time loop. you have to constantly write as if it could be either or so that readers can come back and be like Holy fucking shit because that is probably the best feeling as a reader is being able to go back and Realise. and i cannot pull a nameless and have the reader character be expectant that theyre in a time loop because when that comes out, it would make more sense for the reader to be in shock no matter WHAT version of the universe theyre in. the person who should be acting like they know is choromatsu because he has a reason to. and of course, as time goes on and as you continue reading through the routes, choromatsu becomes more and more suspicious of you. but its hard to write this when its like. do you want this to be multiple choice or do you want this to centre on choromatsu. because wanting it to centre on choromatsu makes this make sense, but then adding in multiple choice and writing the multiple-choice sections at the same time, it makes the whole concept fall apart. if a reader comes into the story and starts reading the ichimatsu route, theyre going to be hit with these things that they dont even understand. theyre reading the story completely out of whack BUT THATS HOW ITS MEANT TO BE READ me making it multiple choice means that im ALLOWING this to be the experience they get.

like as banging as this story sounds in my head and as banging as the chapters i have written are (as banging as they could be considering i was 16 years old writing them) i do not think i could actually post this because it would just be really confusing to follow if you consumed the story as it was meant to be consumed which could potentially be TECHNICALLY out of order. people do this with the how to: series as well there are a lot of people who have read how to: happy and have NOOOOO fucking clue what is going on in there. they came for KARAMATSU ANGST and NOTHING MORE they DID NOT expect there to be HORROR NIGHTMARES but that is exactly what they got. so i just know that is how that would go with this series which i know for sure would fuck people up. you walk into a 150k+ jyushimatsu x reader and on the 14th chapter youre in there talking to fucking god like HELLOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

musclematsu: while iromatsu its ichi using kara as a chew toy karamatsu is like, a chew toy with spikes, and fire and hurtful things, so ichimatsu receives psychic damage by that. Yeah that does not happen with jyuushimatsu this is like a uno reverse, these two are made or way harder stuff, and way dumber too, five stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

woodmatsu: theyre sweet :3 its a good balance between karamatsu being a chewtoy and todomatsu being the tsukkomi fishing with love letters and falling in love with the same cashier? pretty solid gags ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ➖

middlematsu: funniest gag they ever did was the fact that they never talk to eachother, nobody has a good time here, four stars only bc its a rare one ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ➖

i keep on thinking of chibita starting to write love letters to karamatsu - partly because he finds writing his feelings out anonymously helps him channel all that emotional energy that’s started to build up because having nowhere to vent it is beginning to drive him nuts.

So he writes his feelings out, in a way that’s honest but vague enough for Karamatsu not to be able to figure out it’s from him if he were to find it. And he doesn’t intend initially for him to read it at all at first. But then he thinks it would potentially give Karamatsu an edge over his brothers. Some kind of victory. An encouragement of sorts. And then before he can think too deeply on all the ways this could go horribly wrong, he sends it in the mail, not daring to run the risk of being caught sending it personally.

And on the morning that it arrives, Jyushimatsu picks it up, along with the rest of the mail. He shuffles through it all as he heads back through the house, seeing that it’s mostly just the usual stuff.. a random magazine, more of Choromatsu’s idol fan-club stuff, boring-looking letters for the parents...and... hmm?? A letter? For Karamatsu? That’s new.

And like... remember how in the episode with Hatabou’s birthday Jyushi could tell the invitation was from Hatabou because it smelled like Hatabou? I figure Jyushi at this point would already know it’s from Chibita because it smells like him.

He joins the others and loudly declares that there’s a letter for Karamatsu. This, of course, catches everyone’s attention. Somebody remarks “Yeah right, who would bother writing to Shittymatsu?”

Karamatsu, who was sort of sitting staring dramatically out the window as if that makes him look deep and thoughtful and mysterious, is now staring in disbelief at Jyushimatsu. He takes the letter from him and can feel everyone watching him out of the corner of their eyes as he curiously opens the envelope and takes out the little folded letter.

There’s silence as he reads through what’s written on it but the look on his face is rapidly evolving. He looks like he’s going to cry from joy and when he’s finally done he presses the letter to his chest and starts rambling about how some shy and surely beautiful angel has finally chosen to convey her feelings to him. His Karamatsu Girl has arrived at last.

And everyone’s like what the shit!? Osomatsu snatches the letter out of Kara’s hands and scans his gaze across what’s written there, his face contorting as he finds that it is indeed a love letter to karamatsu.

There follows a short period of the letter passing from brother to brother before it finally ends up in Jyushimatsu’s hands again. He’s got a peculiar look on his face as he sniffs the paper just to be sure he hadn’t got it wrong earlier. But no, it still smells like Chibita to him.

Karamatsu’s exasperated at this point. He would like the letter from his secret admirer safely back in his own hands now and stares beseechingly at Jyushi to hand it back to him. And Jyushi pauses, looks like he’s going to say something but then seems to change his mind and simply hands the letter back over with an innocent “Congratulations Karamatsu-niisan!”

Nothing more is said on the matter. The brothers go back to ignoring Karamatsu as best they can because his immense joy over this letter is already starting to get to them. But Ichi is more concerned with Jyushi’s peculiar behaviour. “You know who it’s from don’t you?” he asks him privately at one point.

And Jyushi thinks of telling him. But instead he just says he thought he did at first but was wrong. He doesn’t want to spoil Karamatsu’s joy. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. And maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t actually from Chibita after all..

Some time later though.. they’re all dining out at Chibita’s cart and oh boy Karamatsu is talking a lot tonight isn’t he? Waxing poetic about how sincere his anonymous angel’s confessions of love were and how he awaits the day they can meet face to face. And how he greatly wishes the sender had left him a means of contacting them.

Jyushi’s gaze is fixed on Chibita the entire time, who seems just a little bit awkward tonight. He’s definitely trying to change the subject and it’s just making Jyushimatsu more suspicious about whether his previous assumptions had been correct after all... and when they’re making to leave he hangs back a little, giving Chibita that owl-like stare of his for a few moments before Choromatsu calls for him to hurry up.

It unnerves him, but not any more than Jyushimatsu usually would.

So Chibita keeps writing the letters even after that first one, but after a while he starts to think it was a bad idea. Whenever Karamatsu comes by the cart all he seems to talk about is the latest letter, and how he wishes his shy admirer would allow him to speak with them. And it’s kind of heartbreaking. Because Chibita’s the one writing those letters and Karamatsu has no idea. But he’s certain things would not go well if he discovered the truth. Especially after the look Karamatsu gave him when he interrupted one of his rambles with a noticeably irritable ‘How do you even know it’s a Karamatsu Girl anyway?’ He’d gone so quiet after that which only served to suggest to him that the prospect of such a thing was preposterous.

So he resigns himself to it and just has to sit and endure this and try to decide whether or not he should stop writing them... This can’t go on forever after all.. It’s not even fair on Karamatsu... getting his hopes up only to never actually go beyond that.. To tease him with the promise of a love that he’ll never be allowed to meet with...

And idk I want Jyushi to have some sort of part in getting the confusions and gaps in the communication closed up.

Karamatsu is understandably miserable once the letters do stop. Chibita’s feeling no better... but it was for the best. And eventually, after seeing both sides wilting as this goes on and on, Jyushimatsu finally decides to tell Karamatsu about what he’s known for months now. Because anything is better than letting this atmosphere fester any longer. But Karamatsu doesn’t believe him, because why would Chibita do something like that? And Jyushimatsu doesn’t have an answer to that, he’ll just have to ask Chibita.

When he says this to Chibita himself tho, it causes Chibita to drop a plate in shock and just freeze up. And Karamatsu misreads the reaction like, ‘yeah, unbelievable right?”

And Chibita laughs awkwardly as he gathers up the broken pieces of the plate he dropped but it’s a laugh completely devoid of amusement...

There’s an anxious pulse that’s entered his system now and it just keeps going round and round until finally, he can stand it no longer. If Karamatsu’s going to keep talking about this it’s just going to drive him nuts. If he has to keep this a secret any longer he’s going to explode.... Karamatsu deserves to know the truth.. no matter what response the truth provokes...

So as Kara makes to leave to allow Chibita to close up for the night, Chibita halts him, shouting out so suddenly into the night air that it makes Kara jump.

And he comes clean with it. He confesses to the fact that he indeed was the one writing all those letters. That he thought it was a good idea and would maybe be good for Karamatsu and that he didn’t mean for it to wind up like this. It comes out all at once in a long emotional and frustrated ramble and through all of it Chibita cannot look Karamatsu in the eye, instead choosing to busy himself with hurriedly packing things away and keeping his gaze averted and at the end when he finally runs out of breath he stands there with his head bowed and bitter tears gathering at the corners of his eyes because dammit this is such a mess....

And Karamatsu is very quiet as he processes everything he’s just heard and when Chibita finally risks a glance at him his expression is completely unreadable.

He doesn’t wait to find out what his response is. In truth he feels ready to just throw himself down onto his futon at home and scream into his pillow for the rest of the night. Gaze turned to the ground he offers an awkward apology and pulls his cart off in the direction of home leaving Karamatsu still standing shell-shocked and staring after him... his mind still in the process of computing all this new information and what it means...

When he gets home he reads through all the letters again, refreshing his memory of everything that was written there and allowing those words to blend in with the knowledge that the hand that wrote them belonged to Chibita... and to figure out how he feels about that.

Did Chibita mean what he wrote in these? Were those words genuine? Or was it just like he’d said, just doing this to make Karamatsu feel better and give him an edge over his brothers?? That’s an important distinction... He finds he really wants to - needs to - know which is true. Did Chibita really feel those things? Or was he just writing things he thought Karamatsu would like to hear from someone else? Does Chibita... maybe… love him???

The mere thought quickens his heartbeat... it brings a strange fluttery feeling to his gut and a dryness to his mouth and causes a whole flood of other feelings to fill him up all at once - some of them oddly familiar... and he could almost kick himself for being so blind and never noticing them within himself before whenever he and Chibita had been in each other’s company. He was fond of him before, yes. But the more he thinks about this situation now, the more he realises that perhaps ‘fond’ is too weak a word to use...

And with that realisation, he also knows what he wants the outcome of this to be.. And it all depends on Chibita.

what are your thoughts on "Letter" part of season 1's episode 24 (Se01e24)?

There’s a reoccurring theme about the fear of change (though it’s inevitable) across the show, but I think Letter is the culmination of that fear and how it drags Osomatsu down to (arguably) his lowest point in the series. Specifically, it’s the fear of change that comes with entering adulthood and the isolation that accompanies it. For a lack of a better term, we’re pack animals, and what are these guys if not a pack of monkeys running on instinct?

Letter repeatedly frames Osomatsu against the others. This is the guy known to get wrapped up in the atmosphere, controlling it, but the moment he takes a backseat, doesn’t indulge it, it “proves” to him that they don’t need him around to still be a family. That “family” is only reinforced when they’re being “proper” adults.

It’s also a bit of a callback to s1e2 “The Melancholy of Osomatsu (TMO),” me thinks. Osomatsu is a family man first and foremost. He is a dirtbag because he knows he has people in his corner to fallback on. It’s a very selfish manner of viewing family, but Osomatsu is nothing if not self-centered (and, well, he is the center of their little corner of the world. such is the fate of a protagonist, i suppose). He can’t get over his own hurt feelings and see the bigger picture that, whether it be now or later, these things are inevitable. And, well, as it’s shown, when he realizes his actions it’s too late and they’ve already moved on, replacing him with a no-name no-presence bozo (sorry rip in peace shonosuke hijirisawa).

It doesn’t help that the others can’t communicate this, either. Hell, Choromatsu couldn’t send the titular letter about this exact thing when he knew his words would fail him. Todomatsu and Karamatsu resort to violence, to stoop down to his level to make him See but it doesn’t work because, well, of course not. You can’t fight with fire against a pyromaniac. Ichimatsu and Jyushimatsu don’t even touch it, kings of avoiding confrontation.

However, the biggest difference is that Letter is almost a regression of his character from TMO (negative character development). He was willing to apologize for pushing them away due to his own overbearing self-centered actions then; now he can’t even look them in the eye.

HOWEVER X2, to reiterate, communication is a two way. None of them are communicating how they really feel. In an attempt to see the bigger picture and work on themselves, they reject vulnerability and parrot what their world tells them is the right thing to do. Because, as stubborn and impossible as Osomatsu is, he’s self aware. He knows. Why else would there be a skit in an episode called motherfucking COSPLAYMATSU (s3e15) include where Osomatsu is an old, bitter, lonely man, who can name his every flaw and what caused his downfall? This is an anime about How To Make An Anime. And they don’t know how, so they just make small miscellaneous skits, and more or less put on home theater productions, because they’re still kids who just wanna have fun. I bet you Matsuyo helps make their stupid costumes.

It’s about giving him the opportunity to be a bigger person. s2e24 Sakura is this exactly, because sometimes you have to suck it up and be the bigger person for those you love even if you might not be ready for these responsibilities. It still needs to be done. s3e18 “Just Don’t” is about willing to take chances and wanting to change and, even then, it might not work out. Because that’s just how life is.

Letter is an episode where Osomatsu’s childishness was reinforced by his own actions and the actions of others. Confrontation can bring change, and change wasn’t happening here, only avoidance, and that’s why it inevitably fails, because they all still care and need each other. The Way Home, true home, will be long and convoluted, you’ll get lost, but so long as you’re journeying with your loved ones, then maybe everything will work out in the end. BUT, it acknowledges that, realistically not everyone will change for the better, that some things do go left unsaid between family members, and you may very well die before reaching a point where you’re content with yourself. The letter unsent is this nonverbal unconscious contract to this self-perpetuated hell because, whether they run back home or keep to independence, they’re not going to be happy.

Not a coincidence it’s the man who still clings to past fame and refuses to change. That’s Osomatsu’s future. That Is Future Osomatsu, if nothing’s to be done.

Character Analysis: High School Karamatsu

So I've been thinking about baby Karamatsu, and once again Osomatsu-san does so much with the motto "Show, don't tell" when it comes to this boy. I saw a tag on one of my pictures saying that if teen!Karamatsu's only trait that gets recognised is his crying they feel bad for him, and I can't agree more on that!! I'll joke about it sure, but let's actually talk about what we find out about Karamatsu's teen years.

First of all I wanna address the episode 23 from season 3, "Friend", before we deep-dive into the movie.

"Friend"

In this episode we get to see all of the characters' personalities re-told from Choromatsu's POV. And you know how Choromatsu tends to see his brothers a bit... Exaggeratedly. Just see "Karamatsu and Brothers", where he does impressions of the others, and Karamatsu doesn't even understand who he's trying to be, because he sees his brothers in a much more gentle way than Choromatsu does.

So when Choromatsu thinks of Todomatsu, he's super tiny

And he establishes himself as an unreliable narrator at the end, where he

When he thinks of Ichimatsu, his voice is high pitched much unlike the movie, and his shift into depression-mode is much faster too

Admits to not even having a friend, he was completely made up.

So I bring this up of course, because Karamatsu is described as a scaredy-cat who can't even handle holding a conversation. I'm not saying this is necessarily false, but...

Maybe it's a little more toned down than this. After all, he seems to be very low-key in the movie.

Confidence

Karamatsu's confidence, or rather, his lack of one, has been confirmed by word of God before. Literally.

And it's interesting that it has almost never been stated outright, save for the earlier mentioned episode "Karamatsu and Brothers", where Choromatsu calls him out. Otherwise it's always been a "show don't tell" with him, it can actually be difficult to glean this from his character if you don't know what you're looking for. After all, he's called a narcissist over and over, he's so full of himself all the time! But is he really? I've said this over and over, but this "act" is most likely just him trying to be true to himself and feel good about himself, so it's not necessarily a false picture of himself, but more an exaggerated one that he hopes will boost that poor confidence of his.

Remember how he was in drama club? We'll get back to that so let's put a pin in it for now 📍

What we see

In the movie, Karamatsu is the person that we see the least of what he is like in the company of others, but at the same time, the entire movie is revolving around him. This is his memory, his regret, and ultimately, it's about him getting closure. But even so, we don't ever "learn" what he was like in the same way that we do the others. We don't get funny scenes or examples, but again, everything is unsaid. Shown to us, but never explained. You just have to fill in the blanks yourself.

Yes. He does cry a lot.

It's not something that Karamatsu would subconsciously hide in his memory world. So in a fair observation, we can determine that Karamatsu was indeed a crybaby and easily startled, anxious, and generally unsociable.

Karamatsu has for a long time been pointed out to be a crybaby when he was little, because he generally used to be one in Osomatsu-kun. This solidifies this claim, and so I believe his reaction to the whole incident at school where they all fell apart went like this:

• He loses his support network - He is suddenly left to fend for himself, his already frail nature grew, and his social anxiety really took off. Getting teary-eyed or outright crying from even just the littlest thing when you're at your lowest is part of the anxiety-experience, most of us know this. It's not the same for everyone, but it's safe to say that his anxiety was pretty damn bad.

• Isolation - Not knowing how to break out of his shell and attempt to become his own person like his brothers do, he can't let go of what they had, and he feels himself slipping away. He doesn't know how to speak to them all, nor anybody else when he doesn't have his brothers by his side. So it's safe to assume that he had exactly 0 friends back then.

• Sense of hopelessness - We often see Karamatsu staring out into the air, reflecting on his situation, but he never actually does anything about it. And when he tries to, he actually fails. Despite his confidence being nearly non-existent, he still managed to ask them all to meet him to talk about the letter, and I think that does say something about him.

• He still loves his brothers - Again, despite everything, he managed to gather them all together, because his brothers mean everything to him. He just can't let go of them, and that's also why he just can't think of doing anything without them. That's why he doesn't try to become somebody else, or try to impress others. That stuff doesn't matter.

• Then he snaps - He has enough of it, and ends up snapping at his brothers, causing their fight to escalate.

Acting

I will never get enough of baby Karamatsu acting. Ever.

Anyway - We all knew he was in drama club when he was younger, and this is the one thing that we see him actually do to explore his interests. And it's strange isn't it, how somebody so socially anxious would decide to join drama club of all things... Unless it's because he wanted to reinvent himself.

Again, we don't see him do it during the movie's runtime, we only see the others, but we do see this in the credits. Doing a show, don't tell, so that we can figure out ourselves why he would suddenly do something like that. He wanted to build up his confidence, or maybe even pretend to be somebody else for a moment. However it is clear that he never got a chance to actually try this out until he got older, and he managed to sort out his anxiety somewhat.

Do you roleplay? It can be nice to get out of your own shoes for a spell and be somebody else, take a break from real life and play somebody completely different from yourself, or maybe even somebody who is quite a lot like you, but you get to decide what happens in their life. You might even get to experience things that you normally never would have gotten the chance to do.

High school Karamatsu is a deeply complex character, and there's a lot more to him than meets the eye. You just don't get it handed to you, you need to be observant, just like with him when he's older, when it's all an act.

Osomatsu is the “eliminating” type of yandere. He will do anything to make sure his competition is not around, he will attack or even go as far as to kill his rivals. If he’s pushed too far he would go as far as to hurt you, or kidnap you. He would even go as far as to kill you if driven mad enough. The only reason he would do this is if you show any kinda hatred or just disliking towards him, or are dating // showing an interest in somebody. He would try really hard to get you to trust him and be close to him, so he’d be really upset if you didn’t like him for some reason because of all the effort he’s put in for you to like him.

“Oh… so you are alive!” He smiles, wiping the blood off his face. Whos blood? Yours? His? Or somebody else’s? That is the question isn’t it.

“That’s good!” He giggles, “I honestly thought I killed you…” he says, coming close to you and caresses your cheek, you flinch at this action. “Now that wouldn’t be good… would it….?”

Karamatsu is a bit of the dependent type to be honest. He is devoted to you, and only you. You are his entire world and you are all that he thinks about. He cannot imagine a world without you by his side. He is so loving, to the point of it being overbearing. Giving you an unreasonable amount of love letters, flowers, anything to woo you. He is extremely delusional, getting the wrong idea and thinking you being kind to him means you love him. Although he is relatively harmless, if you get him out of his delusions (which is by kissing somebody or just dating somebody and showing an interest in somebody else) he ends up killing the person.

You looked at him, mouth agape. He did what? You may need him to repeat that.

The blood on his hoodie though, the tears rolling down his face, it says enough. He’s telling the truth. He killed your girlfriend, totoko.

“I’m sorry!” He exclaims, “please stay with me still! Don’t leave me! It’s okay right? It’ll be okay! Please don’t leave me! I cant live without you!” He barks out a laugh, tears steaming down his face. He seems more bothered by the idea of you leaving him than the fact he just murdered somebody, but you’re too scared to move as he comes up to you, taking your face in his hands.

“We can still stay together forever my dear! Like we always wanted! Hahaha!”

Choromatsu is the obsessive type of yandere, he always wants to be with you, he wants all of your time to himself. He wants you to be with him and only him, only think of him. He is the type of person to have a shrine of you hidden somewhere, he has pictures of you, there’s red scribbles of everyone else in the picture with you, whether it’s simply scribbles or just “DIE” or “NO” on the faces, your face being circled with hearts on it, he has stolen your sock that he sniffs and sighs happily at. He has become so obsessed though, he needs you by his side always. He’s more than willing to manipulate you into staying with him, and he can be very violent towards others. He isn’t violent towards you, but you have the fear that he could become violent. He tends to monopolize and isolate you from others.

“Who is that person you were talking to?” He glares at you accusingly. “You KNOW how I get when I’m upset…” he says, getting close to your face. “You don’t want anyone else to get hurt do you? Another person dying? Because of you? Is that really what you want?” He asks, and you shake your head no, begging him not to do anything drastic.

He gives you a sweet smile, “good” he says, kissing your cheek. “D’aww! I cant stay mad at you…” he sighs happily, “I love you~”

Ichimatsu is a bit self degrading, believing he is not good enough for his muse. He is extremely suicidal, wondering why he even should exist in a world where he can’t be with you. He ultimately decides if he cannot be with you he will simply die. He guilts you into staying with him, saying “I will kill myself if you leave me” he is extremely jealous as well which will make him extremely violent towards any rivals of his. He’s harmful to even himself, but never to you. He tends to self harm, mainly because he feels he deserves it, but also for your attention. When you pay attention to him it makes him feel so good, even if it’s not the good kind. It makes him feel like you care? Give him too much attention towards the self harm and he might actually go too far and stab himself to death in front of you.

“Good news honey..” Ichimatsu smiles darkly, “I killed that douchebag you wouldn’t shut the hell up about!” He laughs at you stare at him. “Yes.. keep staring at me..” he says in almost a dreamy like state, is that drool coming from his mouth? The moment you look away, he’s quick to say “hey… look at me…” he starts out serious before he lets out a rather maniacal laugh. “There’s so much blood coming out… it’s all for you..!”

He leans in to give you a kiss, you can taste the blood on his mouth and what freaks you out is that you don’t know if it’s his or not. “Lets die together. So we can stay together FOREVER in the afterlife.. we can start with you.. or do you wanna do it at the same time? I have sooo many ideas..”

Jyushimatsu is the type to worship you and be absolutely devoted towards you. He will do whatever you ask of him, he is quite literally your slave. He worships you and he is the self sacrificing type as well, he’s willing to kill himself for you, he’s at your beck and call. However at the same time would kill you too, not because he’s jealous, not on accident, but for the simple fact that he loves you. He is overbearing and is by far one of the worst of them, I feel very bad for you if you have this yandere. There is no reasoning with him, he’s beyond insanity.

He giggles, as you look at him covered in blood. “Well of course I killed him silly!” He says it in almost a bashful manner, “I’ll do anything for you.. even.. killing for you… I wouldn’t mind dying if it’s for you! use me however you want!” He grabs onto your hands, “you can just count on me. You don’t even need anyone else! I love you more than anyone ever could.. since I’m doing so much for you.. could you do one thing for more?”

Your quiet, but nod slowly, you’re too scared to do anything else.

“Can you give me your fingers nails? Toe nails are cool too if with wanna give me them instead.. a strand of your hair too! Ooh maybe even a tooth! I want them so I always have a part of you with me.”

Todomatsu is a stalker. He stalks you on social media and knows an unsettling amount of information about you that you never told him. He’s very clingy and obsessive and he wants to be with you always, and always, and always, AND ALWAYS, AND ALWAYS. He wants you guys to be inseparable, he is the most likely to kidnap you. He would be the type to isolate you from others, and he tries to force you to love him if he thinks you don’t. He is a little bit obsessed as well though, he wants to know everything you do, he wants to know everything about you. He can be violent towards you at times though.

“It hurts?” He asked, as he kicks you to the ground. “That’s your fault! I send you like 70 text messages and you didn’t reply! What about me?! Why didn’t you reply?” He glares at you angrily. “Where were you?! What were you doing?!”

When you don’t answer, he finally stops and inhales sharply, “I wanna stay together forever” he finally says, “you’ll never leave my side. Not again. I’ll make sure of it. You don’t need other people. You have me. You only need me.”

You folded and placed the purple hoodie you stole borrowed from your friend, Ichimatsu, on your shoe rack. Easy to spot. You hoped he would get it back after all this was over.

You took a breath and went to your room to grab the letters you had written earlier that day. There were 3 in total.

To everyone, an explanation. You wanted to share your thoughts and why you’re doing what you are. How hard it is to go on with all the negative thoughts clouding your head. All the self loathing.

To the Matsuno’s, an apology. They have been holding you a float for so long, but you can’t hold on anymore. It’s too much. Every day hurts.

To Karamatsu, a confession. You’ve loved him for so long but never told him from fear. Fear or rejection? Or fear of reciprocation? You don’t know what is scarier.

You neatly put the three letters on top of Ichimatsu’s sweater. Easy to find. You wrapped your arms around yourself and felt the soft fabric of the blue sweater you dawned. Another “borrowed” sweater from one of the sextuplets. It was going to be damaged by your plan so you hoped Kara would forgive you.

After checking everything,  you finally put on your shoes and left the house. You were heading to the scenic sight of the ocean on top of a cliff. You spent a lot of time there looking out at the beautiful sight the past few years.

Karamatsu got the sudden urge to go out for a run. He didn’t know why since he had a lack of motivation to do so for a while, but he wasn’t complaining. He told Osomatsu that he was going to be right back and slipped on his running shoes.

He took off deciding on going his usual scenic route. It was quite a beautiful path. I went up the hill and you would get a view of the ocean on the path.

When he approached the peak of the cliff, he noticed familiar (h/c) hair in a blue hoodie. He immediately knew it was you and he smiled to himself and picked up his pace just a little more.

You, on the other hand, were staring out bracing yourself for what is about to happen. You already stood at the edge of the cliff. You closed your eyes and asked yourself if you were forgetting something. You didn’t even notice the footsteps as they approached.

After a second you took a deep breath and then allowed yourself to fall forward.

“(Y/N)!” A deep voice yelled from behind. That was the first moment you noticed the person. He fucking booked it. He was able to grab one of the polls and grasp you around your chest. You were limp in his grasp. He was a lot stronger than you thought.

“(Y/n)…” tears started to form in your eyes.

“Kara… please… let me go,” you begged. He frowned and was more determined to keep you from going. He managed to pull you up, despite you wiggling to get him to let go. Once he got you fully up he tightly wrapped his arms around you. He slightly picked you up to bring you away from the cliff. You were still trying to get him to release you,  but it was futile now that he had both arms tightly wrapped around you in a hug.

Once he was happy with the distance he stopped and rested his head on the back of your shoulder. When he did this, you felt your shoulder get wet. Was he crying?

“Do what?” His voice was shaky.

“Don’t make me think you care about me.”

“Huh? (Y/n) of course I care about you.”

“No-not like that. I mean-don’t make me think you love me back.”

“Back?” You stayed quiet, already regretting your words.

Choromatsu spent a while looking through the house for his Nyaa-chan album. It took him a whole 40 minutes of searching before he realized that he lent it to you about 2 weeks ago. He facepalmed at the realization.

Nothing against you, but he wanted his album back so he decided to swing by your apartment. It didn’t take too long as you only lived a few blocks away.

When he was in front of your apartment something seemed off. He went to knock on the door when he noticed your door wasn't completely closed. This concerned the green man. Hesitating, he opened it further and let himself in.

“(Y/n)?” He quietly let out. He nearly slapped himself, that wasn't the way to find you. He closed the door behind him and went to take off his shoes when he saw the purple hoodie and letters.

On further inspection he noticed the letters were in your handwriting. The “To Everyone” letter on top. He meekly grabbed it and opened it up.

When he read it, his heart dropped. He looked at the other two. Once seeing who they were addressed to, he picked the sweater up as well as the letters and ran home, panicked.

He threw the door open and quickly changed his shoes.

“GUYS THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!” He screamed. He looked around trying to find his brothers.

“GUYS SERIOUSLY IT'S ABOUT (Y/N)!!”

This piqued the other’s interest. The brothers gathered in the hallway as Chromatsu panicked

“Where is Karamatsu?” He frantically asked.

“He went on a run,” Osomatsu responded. Choromatsu released a string of nos as he entered the dining room. He placed everything he was carrying on the table.

“So what’s so important that it has you screaming?” He looked down at the letters, not able to say anything. You were really good friends to all of the brothers so this hit the green Matsu hard.

“They returned my hoodie,” Ichimatsu mumbled, picking it up off the table. No one wanted to acknowledge the letters. Todomatsu was the one to crack.

“To Everyone, To the Matsuno’s, and To Karamatsu,” he read aloud. “The hell. Why did Karamatsu get his own? Did you leave some, where… ever you got these?”

“I-I got them at their h-house. T-their door was open and t-that's what was t-there, clear to see on Ichimatsu’s h-hoodie. Read the Everyone…”

So the Pink Matsu did. By the end of the letter everyone was mortified.

Ichimatsu picked up the one for the Matsuno’s and read it aloud. They were all solemn. They didn’t know what to do and all began to join the green Matsu in panicking.

“The fuck does the one for Karamatsu say?” Oso was more curious than angry, unlike what his tone conveyed. He picked up the letter and this time read it to himself. Todomatsu read over the red Matsu’s shoulder, also curious about the content.

Osomatsu had mixed emotions about the letter. He was very jealous that you liked Karamatsu, but also weirdly glad that the person you liked liked you back. Now wasn’t the time though. He put the letter back on the table and looked at the others.

“I take it they weren’t at their house?” Osomatsu asked Choromatsu, who in return stayed quiet and began to sweat.

“Dumbass! Why didn’t you check!”

“I-”

“He said the door was open so they probably aren't there,” Ichimatsu said. Osomatsu let out a breath. He wasn’t used to acting like the oldest but it was needed at this moment.

“Choro, go and check the house.” Choromatsu nodded in response to Osomatsu’s command. “Now.”

“A-alright!” He stuttered and quickly left.

“I suppose someone should find the dumbass. Does anyone know his usual route?” Osomatsu asked.

“I do.” Jyushimatsu finally said something. Usually, the yellow man would be hyperactive and bouncy, but this was serious and hit a little too close to home. Especially after…

“Can you go on that path and find him?” Jyushimatsu took off in a flash.

“Totty, can you give them a call?”

“Alright.” He left the room, leaving Osomatsu and Ichimatsu in a tense silence.

“I’m… going to check the place where Ka-” Oso cut himself off. “Where she tried.”

Ichimatsu let out a sound of acknowledgement as Osomatsu took his leave. Ichimatsu went to put his hoodie near the washer instead of the pile of hoodies that look exactly the same.

“(Y/n) do you like me?” You stayed quiet. You did, you were undeniably in love but you weren’t ready to say it verbally. You looked down to the ground.

“It would be nice since I… love you (Y/n).”

“N-no. Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not-”

“Stop it. You can’t.”

“But I do-”

“No you don’t. You can’t.”

“(Y/n)-”

“You are amazing. I’m garbage-”

“(Y/n)!” He sternly stated. He was trying to be gentle but it wasn’t getting through to you. “I am not lying to you. I’ve loved you for over a year. You’ve made me so happy. You are my number 1 Karamatsu fan. You’re so attractive and take my breath away everytime I see you.”

“N-no…” you mumbled under your breath.

“Yes.” Karamatsu didn’t want to hear it. You started to shift but Karamatsu tightened his grip.

“Kara, I-I want to turn around and see your face.” Honestly he wasn’t all that convinced. You were struggling so hard to get out of his grip while he was saving you. “I promise that’s all I’ll do.”

He loosened his grip, but left his arms around you. You took a deep breath and turned around to look him in the eyes. You both had tears and swollen faces at this point.

“Do you mean it?” The look you gave him shot his heart. You looked so vulnerable… so fragile.

“Wholeheartedly.”

“Are you sure?”

“Very.” His eyes said it all. He was serious. You felt relief but also fear.

“I love you too…” It was quiet but he heard it. His face lit up with a blush, but to be fair you weren’t much better.

Your arms were trapped so you squirmed to try and release them. Finally, you get them up by pressing against Karamatsu’s chest. You wrapped your arms around his neck and allowed yourself to examine his face. As you did so your eyes landed on his pink lips and stayed there for a while.

Karamatsu started to lean slightly forward and you leaned up to meet him halfway, the two of you sharing a kiss. It felt the whole world stopped while you two kissed. All your thoughts disappeared, being replaced by Karammatsu.

“Karamatsu!” The two of you immediately separated when you heard someone call his name. The voice called out several more times before Jyushimatsu came into view.

“There you are!” The yellow man sprinted forward to the blue one, completely missing the fact you were only a few feet away from him.

“U-uh y-yes my dear Brazar ?” Karamatsu responded, his blush only getting worse.

“This is important! Have you seen (Y/n)!?”

“U-uh, they are right there?” He wasn’t sure of what was going on.

“There you are!” Jyushimatsu yelled.

“Here I am?” Before you could even finish, the yellow man picked you up and started running. You began to panic and yell, not knowing what was going on.

“Wait-Jyushimatsu!” Karamatsu yelled out before trying to chase his younger brother.

Jyushimatsu carried you to their home and once he entered, he called out that he found you. Todomatsu, Ichimatsu, and Choromatsu (who had just arrived back a few minutes ago) all came out into the hallway to see. When they saw you they all collectively released a sigh of relief.

“Dumbass,” Ichimatsu said.

“H-huh?”

“We found your letters, you really think you could get away from us?” Todomatsu continued. It all clicked at that moment.

“Y-you found them? H-how did y-you get them? I-is that why Karamatsu was…” She trailed off.

A breathless Karamatsu entered the house looking at his brothers. “Wh-what dd-did you g-grab th-them f-for?”

“They were going to…” Choromatsu started.

“Kill themself,” Ichimatsu finished.

“H-how did you k-know?” Karamatsu asked.

“I wrote three… suicide notes,” you confessed. “But how did you get them?” “Y-you left y-your door open,” Choromatsu replied.

“Three?” Karamatsu was really confused.

“Yeah… you really didn’t know when you found me?”

“Not at all…”

“(Y/n),” Todomatsu started. “You mean a lot to us. We love you.”

“Yeah! Yeah!” Jyushimatsu cut in, finally putting you down, but he kept his arms around you in a hug.

You felt overwhelmed and began to ugly cry. Karamatsu and Todomatsu went in to join Jyushi in the hug. Then the other two present Matsu’s joined.

“Someone should probably find Osomatsu and tell him what’s happened,” Choro states. There were some mutters of agreement.

“Jyushi, can you go find him? He was going you know where.” Jyushimatsu nodded and took off in the direction Osomatsu went.

Most of the brothers released you after Jyushi did, but Kara kept his hold on you, letting you cry into his shoulder. He gently placed his right hand on your head to keep you close. Todomatsu took this moment and rubbed his hand up your back trying to help soothe you. You gently grabbed the sides of Karamatsu’s hoodie.

Not too long passed when the door was whipped open again. Osomatsu stood at the door frame when he saw you in his brother’s arms with Totty rubbing your back.

“(Y/n)…” He said, relieved to see you safe. He walked forward and tried to pull Karamatsu away to hold you in his arms, but failed. Instead he just hugged your side, putting his face into your hair. “I’m glad you’re safe…”

Osomatsu’s words hit hard. You didn’t understand why they went through all this effort.

“Why…” It was soft, but the guys heard it.

“Because we love you. You are our best friend and mean a lot to us. You don’t stay with us from obligation or anything like that and there… isn’t really anyone else we can say that about.” Osomatsu was unusually wise today.

You pulled away from Karamatsu and Osomatsu with snot running down your nose. Karamatsu took one of your hands and held it with both of his while you used your other hand to try and wipe your snot away.

“You really do?”

“Yes. We all care about you.”

You felt Karamatsu move one of his hands to intertwine his fingers with yours. He gave your hand a squeeze and you squeezed back. It was a small gesture, but you felt the love in it.

You felt the care from all 6 of them.

You were truly loved.

You looked at your lover and 5 best friends and very much felt the care from them.

Maybe living was worth it after all.

Shit. Shit, shit, shit! Did he… did he really just say that to them?! Why would his brain let something so stupid slip out of his mouth?! That’s… that’s like something Osomatsu would do, not a sensitive guy like Choromatsu. Right…? … Oh, no, he’s sunk down to the level of his oldest brother. He didn’t mean to pick at (Name)’s wounds like that, it’s just… he was angry, and he just said the worst thing that came to mind. He realizes how horrible it was to say as soon as it comes out of his mouth. From that second on, he’s apologizing in any possible way he can. Verbal apologies, forgoing his usual purchases of idol merch to buy them something nice, doing anything he thinks they might like. God, he would do anything if they would just… forgive him… please… please.

💜 ICHIMATSU 💜

What? What the fuck is wrong with them that they’d break down just because he touched one little nerve? He’s not that important that it should matter what dumb shit comes out of his mouth! Did he hurt their feelings? They’re lucky he didn’t say something worse! On the one hand, he’s just so fed up with whatever the argument was about that he wanted what he said to hurt and is glad it did. On the other hand… he knows how painful and exposing it feels to have someone dig at your soft parts. Overall he’s not proud of the fact that he hurt them, and that’s the last thing he ever wanted to do, and he fucking hates himself for doing it this time. He disappears immediately, slamming the door, withdrawing from everyone. Not because he doesn’t care how shitty what he said was, but because he doesn’t want to do it again. He resurfaces several days later and does his best to win back their trust. His apology involves a good deal of self-deprecation… he does manage a proper one amid it, though. Whatever they want him to do to make it up, he’ll do it. He just… doesn’t want them to leave.

💛 JYUSHIMATSU 💛

Why… why the heck would he even say something like that?? Sure, he can be a jerk when the situation calls for it, but… but not to someone he loves! Not like that! What happened? He’s pretty sure he just… got so worked up that he ended up saying something he didn’t mean. The downside of being so open and vulnerable with his S/O is that when they’re fighting, they both have perfect ammunition. He knows it wasn’t right to say something that hurt them so much, and yet he just… stands there staring, covering his own mouth, and breaking down in tears when they practically run away from him. Perhaps it’s not surprising, he cries a lot in the following days, both due to the knowledge that he caused pain to someone he loves, and because he doesn’t know how to fix it. Eventually he just sort of runs and attaches himself to them, giving them constant hugs and kisses, begging them that he’ll never do it again. He’ll do anything they want! Anything, if they just forgive him and don’t go away!!

💙 KARAMATSU 💙

Oh… oh, no, no, no, no…what just came out of his mouth? What in the absolute hell did he just say?! How… how could he allow himself to stoop so low as to say such a terrible thing to someone he loves so dearly? Worse than anything else, it was something they trusted him with, they shared this insecurity with him and thought he’d understand and expected him to treat it gently and to hold it with careful hands. He’s betrayed that trust they showed him, and second only to Ichimatsu he’s the one who would beat himself up about it the most. He can’t believe he was so careless with the feelings of someone he loves. It takes a minute for him to fully process that he just said that… and once he does, he’s mortified with himself. He never wanted to hurt them. Everything that his S/O can think of that he might do to apologize, he does. Poems and songs and love letters… genuine, heartfelt, cheesy apologies at any opportunity. He tries so hard to win them back, it’s almost like he thinks he needs to court them all over again… like he’s accidentally set their relationship back to zero and he has to cling with all he has. He doesn’t want to ruin this like he ruins everything else.

Oh, WHAT?! Do they think he shouldn’t have said that? That he crossed over some kind of stupid invisible line? It’s a fight! That’s what people do when they fight, they say idiotic shit they don’t always mean and it’s supposed to hurt like hell! He’s too pissed about whatever dumb thing they were arguing about to fully realize that he just landed a direct hit… until he takes a few breaths and notices they’re looking at him like that. Like he just broke their whole fucking heart. Like they… never wanna see him again. Like they can’t even be around him right now. That hurts more than any word they could ever give him, and his fight-or-flight gets triggered, and he hits flight. He runs away to hide, almost not believing that what just happened actually just happened. What did he do? What the fuck did he do?! He’s… depressed now. He doesn’t think they want anything more to do with him, so he stays away for a long time. When he finally does approach them again, he breaks down sobbing almost immediately and says he doesn’t know why they’d wanna stay with him, but that he can’t take it, that they’re missing from him and whatever they need him to do, he’ll do it, he just can’t lose them because of his own stupid, selfish bullshit.

Are they surprised? Are they pissed at him now? This is what he’s good at! This is the only thing he’s good at, is pouncing on people’s weaknesses and tearing them apart until there’s nothing left. Usually he doesn’t do it so thoughtlessly; it’s often a more calculated, manipulative, calm thing. He shocks himself a bit that he can say something so cutting without barely considering what other things he could say. He knows what will hurt them, so it’s the first thing he goes for when he’s in this kind of a fight. He’s proud of himself for half a second… then he sees their face and what he’s just done hits him like a bullet. He just stands there, frozen, as his beloved S/O runs away from him in tears. That hurt them. That hurt them, and he’s the one who did it. Fuck. He’d say he feels two inches tall, but even that’s being too generous. He sends them texts every day trying to ask if they’ll talk to him, or apologizing, even though he’s very sure he wouldn’t forgive himself for that kind of thing. He just… he doesn’t want to go back to being alone. He screwed up, and he knows it, and… can they just… talk to him…?

Osomatsu is still smiling from ear to ear as he rereads the letter yet again.  He twirls in his room with excitement, holding the letter close to his chest.  He shows it off to his brothers, but keeps the content inside a secret.  He’s not very good at writing out his feelings, so he impatiently waits to tell you his love for you in person.  When you finally see him, he hands you a folded paper with the words “I LOVE YOU!” and some doodles on it.

Karamatsu would cherish the letter as if it were the most delicate treasure imaginable.  He gets to writing you a response right away.  He’s still very flustered, so his writing is rather shaky and he goes through plenty of rough drafts before finally penning his perfect, and rather long, letter.  He pumps himself up before finally giving you the letter.

Choromatsu has to read the letter several times before deciding that this truly was a love letter.  Once it sets in, he’s absolutely gushing over every word.  He’s already imaging the two of you together and is much too flustered to even hold a pen.  Once he finally regains his composure, he sits down to write reply.  It takes him all night but results in a rather sweet letter.

Ichimatsu could feel his heart beating frantically in his chest.  He had already spent a while staring at it, and he knew he’d have to answer to it sooner or later.  He finally collects his thoughts to write a, surprisingly, lovely response.  In the end, he crumples up the letter, not having the courage the give it you.  Luckily for him, you find it and are able to read his feelings for yourself.

Jyushimatsu is bouncing off the walls with more energy than usual.  In his excitement, he writes you a reply letter rather quickly, resulting in messy, but not unreadable, handwriting.  Unable to wait for the mail carrier, he delivers the letter, and a kiss, to you in person.  

Todomatsu was used to getting cute texts from you, but it never got any farther than playful flirting.  This letter confirmed that you held the same feelings for him, and he was ecstatic.  Until now, he had seen letters as an old and out-of-style form of communication, but now he was going all out writing you a letter in return.

An analysis of Karamatsu

Karamatsu Matsuno is a character from the anime Osomatsu-san, and previously Osomatsu-kun. We’ll observe osomatsu-san’s Karamatsu since his personality evolved and developed a lot from osomatsu-kun to osomatsu-san. Karamatsu is the second of 6 brothers, and the color that represents him is blue. “Karamatsu” is also the name of some kind of japanese tree and can be read as a word game for “empty” (karappo). On the first season of Osomatsu-san we can see that Karamatsu is extremely different from Osomatsu-kun. He is quirky, confident, full of energy and charisma. He likes being the center of attention and anything that shines. Projects a really big self- esteem and always talks dramatically. He always tries to look and act cool, but according to his brothers he’s a “pain”.

He always shows love for his siblings and cares about them. Even though they don’t worry much about him. This can be seen in episode 5 of season 1; “The Karamatsu Incident”, and also in many other episodes where they constantly call him kusomatsu (shittymatsu). In general the matsuno brothers mistreat and ignore Karamatsu. On season 1 he was described by his voice actor Yuichi Nakamura as a character that’s “only here for the laughs”. Though this started to change on the second season, and we gradually get to see more aspects of Karamatsu’s personality. In episode 10 of season 2; “Karamatsu and Brother”, we can see that Karamatsu helps his brothers (making favors) even when he doesn’t want to because he is afraid of them getting angry or what they might say to him. When Choromatsu confronts him, Karamatsu starts crying and admits that what’s really bothering him is that his brothers ask him so many things, and that being forced to do all of that makes him want to die. However, Choromatsu has a hard time convincing him to tell that to the others.

Karamatsu knows how to play the guitar, and even is seen singing with Jyushimatsu on the roof (season 1, episode 8). We can also see that although his flashy personality and the way he acts, he is pure and conscious of how he is and how other people see him. In episode 19 of the season 1; “Hijirisawa Shonosuke-san”, it’s shown that his ego is completely clear Karamatsu is also close to Chibita, because through the anime, he’s the one who spends more time with him of the Matsuno brothers. And in episode 24 of season 1; “Letter”, when the brothers decide to become independent and search for their own paths, there’s a scene where Karamatsu asks Chibita to stay with him so he can stop living with his parents. In Osomatsu-san’s movie; “Osomatsu-san The movie” there are even more aspects of Karamatsu’s personality. He tells us that he has a problem to read Kanji (because when they go to the world of memories we see things that are bad written), and we see he had an utterly different personality when he was 18. He looked shy, reserved and quiet. To the point you can barely hear him when he speaks which is the opposite to his actual personality. 

It’s also revealed to us that Karamatsu is the only of the brothers who has regrets that are in the end what makes the movie progress/move on. The movie, however, creates a plot hole. Because when 18 y/o Karamatsu meets actual Karamatsu and talks to him, he sees him as someone cool and worthy of admiration. So after (actual) Karamatsu tells him how great was his adult life and everything he had achieved (being this a lie), he gives to 18 y/o Karamatsu his glasses. This suggests that the reason he is how he is in the future, is because he met himself at that time. In the movie this is not meant to be taken as an event that already happened to them when they were 18 though. So it is still unknown what happened and the events that took the original Karamatsu to be who is actually is now.  Now that season 3 has been confirmed, we’ll se in october a new side of Karamatsu and see how he evolves and grow this time.

about the movie (part 2)

[SPOILERS ALERT] Please don’t read this if you haven’t watched the movie yet.

3. Karamatsu

18-Kara has freckles on his face. 18-Kara always seems anxious in continuous sigh. Among the sextuplets, he is the only one to be not stalked by the adult verson. Maybe Karamatsu himself doesn’t want to encounter his teenage version, and since they are in Karamatsu memory, his unwilling attitude has prevented the sextuplets to meet is past self. Although Karamatsu in Osomatsu-san is a narcissistic loser who freaking prints his own face in the tank top, his true personality does show sometimes as a sensitive person. 

I’ve read somewhere that 18-Kara is unconfident about his freckles, that is why his teenage self is rather reserved. Karamatsu has a pretty much important role in the movie because the sextuplets are lost in his memory world. He is also the one to find out the letter from Takahashi-san, but reluctant to tell his brothers which leads to an unwanted fight in graduation day. Even when he realizes that he is the one to have regrets, Karamatsu could not tell his brothers right away about the letter because as Ichimatsu said, the memory is quite unpleasant for him as well as to his buraza. 

When the sextuplets start to fall out, the other five have their own way to fit in without their brothers. But Karamatsu is different. He cannot fake smiles to make friends or act edgy to show that he’s cool in front of other people. Maybe his only friends are his brothers, but it is hard to communicate with one another at that time. We all know that even when reaching adulthood, Karamatsu still cares about his brother a lot. Apart from the letter, his regret is also about accepting the uncomfortable atmosphere. “If only I had said something, if only I could have talked to them”, these things keep bothering Karamatsu all the time. 

Ichimatsu has noticed this too. He knows what is bothering Karamatsu, but Ichimatsu himself also decides not to take action, probably because he thinks it has to be this way. They should have their own lives as they are no longer kids anymore. And 18-Ichi is trying to accept that by trying hard to fit in, though it’s exhausting and tiresome. Therefore, when meeting 18-Kara, he kinda knows that is him and tries to approach him right away.

And finally is both Karamatsus’ interaction. Obviously what adult Karamatsu says are freaking lies, but that would help 18-Kara feel less insecure about himself. I mean when reaching adulthood, Karamatsu becomes a stupid ass narcissist so that kinda makes sense lol. 

4. Todomatsu and Cybermatsu

Before I begin, I will use Totty for his adult version and Todomatsu for his teenage version.

TODOMATSU IS SO FUCKING CUTE OH MY GOD I HAVE LIKE 32848491249 SCREENSHOTS OF HIM IN MY PHONE

18-Todomatsu is a really really dependent child. He is soft and smol too, I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO PROTECT HIM AT ALL COST. I can see that he cries a lot within that period. The other five seems protective to him too. They are extremely mad when seeing Totty slaps him (Totty’s slap always makes me laugh so hard). After the fight, he could have realized a lot of things and start to change to become a stronger person. That is why he is always seperated from his brothers, from working at Starbucks, or going to the gym. His adult self is an independent one, which contradicts to 18-Todomatsu in many aspects (But he still can’t go to the toilet at night). In Osomatsu-san, Totty is portrayed as a heartless, dry monster, but it’s true that he (used to) love his brothers a lot. Even in that period, when they are falling out, 18-Todo still tries to interact with his brothers and call them nii-chan, especially Choromatsu. Even Totty himself tells Todomatsu that “being sextuplets is not that bad, though you do want to kill them sometimes.”

ALSO, CYBERMATSU IS A GREAT BRO COMBINATION.

They are in the same class, that’s why in the movie, we can see that Todomatsu depends on Choromatsu a lot. Even when they reach adulthood, Totty still relies on Choromatsu sometimes, when he wants to go to the toilet at night, or when Totty needs to buy food.

Cybermatsu is also called Tsukkomimatsu. I think Todomatsu is serious with his brothers sometimes, due to the fact that he has a lot of interaction with Choromatsu in the past. That is why Totty is strongly affected by Choromatsu; he also kinda worries about his job, has a lot of plans and ambitions unlike his clueless older brothers. 

Choromatsu is particularly important to Totty; that is why in episode 24 season 1, he cries a lot when Choromatsu is leaving the house, as well as gets so mad at Osomatsu because of his ignorance.

5. Takahashi-san and the letter

What is the meaning of Takahashi-san appearance? If the whole event is in Karamatsu’s memory, how can Takahashi-san be there when Karamatsu doesn’t know exactly who she is? 

Maybe Karamatsu’s memory world is connected with hers. And the cat is the bridge of both worlds that leads the sextuplets to her house and complete her final wish. The name “Nozomi” itself means “wish”, but I am sure that wish is not only from her side. It is the wish from the sextuplets too. They never want to start a fight, never want their youth to end up like that; they live with that regret until reaching adulthood and accidentally forget about what they should have been. They are still sextuplets, still brothers after all. And their high school years are supposed to be  a memorable part, not something they would rather forget. 

And I don’t know, maybe Takahashi-san speaks my mind too. I am really in love with these lovely boys, and I hope they can continue to get along despite being at the bottom of the society. To me, they are all precious and worth cherishing, and I realize that even more when finish watching the movie <3
