So we just learned about the Jefferson era in apush so basically
he had two terms from 1800-1808
First presdential election when power was peacefully transferred from one politcal party to another. attempted to concilate federalists and the democratic republic on focusing on two things they agreed on federalism and republicism. Since you need to know what he did in his presidency it's a lot.
He basically made these promises that he'll be very strict with the constiution(he didn't because it was directly stated he was allowed to buy land from france but he did since it kept his promise to help farmers), no alliances, religious freedom, a good army(no he didn't do that), freedom of the press, helping farmers, get rid of federalist influence.
His "revolution" was getting rid of federalist polices, such as hamilton's economic polices, and the alien act.
For his first term there was domestic issues and the big thing: Lousiana purchase.
Domestic: he demanded congress to repeal the federalist sponsored judicary act of 1801 and remove the partisan federalist judges that former president adam had appointed in his last hours of office.
-Marbury vs Madison: little success removing federlalist judges
reduced taxes, government spending and national debt.
Lousiana purchase:
Napolen Bonaparte forced spain to cede the lousiana territory to france
French action alarmed Jefferson
-Placed a major european power on U.S border & blocked gradual expansion of the u.s
Problem became pression in 1808 when spanish and french authority denied western farmers to New Orleans.
Thomas jefferson let James Monroe and Robert Livingston to French to neogioate(failed). So Napolean offered to sell the Lousianna territory(because he can't control his empire especially of the Hatii revolution). Jefferson was conflicted since it didn't say anything in the constiution if he could buy land but Napolean was a fickle man so Jefferson was accepted the offer to help farmers to have more land and expand america.(fulfilling his promise to farmers).(also the elastic clause became a thing)
Now onto his second term:
After buy the Lousianna territory he asked congress to explore the territory. So Lewis and Clark went on an expendiation. Sacagewa was a major player who basically helped them survive and amoung other native american tribes. These tribes were new to L&W so this helped develop trade between the americans and the natives. Although there wasn't any waterways L&W were able to make detailed map thus allowing western expansion.
Aaron Burr(there's a lot but I'm just gonna skip some stuff since it's not important for what you're doing) was super power hungry and was going to make his own country and TJ saw it as treason put him on trial but Burr espaced to europe.
Lastly(very important)
England and France were at war with each other and wanted america to choose a side. However TJ wanted to stay neutral. England then started to impress american boats(steal american sailors)(this was called impressment). E & F kept interferring with US's economy so TJ did an embargo. You see he thought this was convince E & F to leave them alone however it crashed the economy since New England and other northern states need to trade with E & F since their economy is revolved around trade and remember america was pretty small at the time they depended on New England and the other trading states for their economy. This also ironically started people to manafacture their own goods and be less dependent on agriculture(TJ didn't want that hence irony. Basically the Embargo didn't work and made things worse.
In the end he didn't end up fulfilling his promises but he did get America more land but left america at the end in a very poor state of economy. Also more sailors were still being kidnapped.
That's basically it. Hope this helps!
