Market research & trend report
Market research
Through the market research about Chinese merchandising industry, there are basically three kinds of ways for Chinese stores to beatify their shops. The first one is through their own design department, which is only for big brand stores. As for small and medium shops as my target clients, they usually come to interior design studios and even some of them just do it by themselves, as a result, they don’t have beautiful display which can attract more passers-by, the pictures below shows the average state in many Chinese cities.
For the shops that come to interior design companies, as far as I know, most interior design companies firstly consider existing furniture and props bought directly because of cost, if ones on their effect image cannot be found in the market, they will design by themselves and customize them. Of course, if clients have high budget and specific requirements, they will meet their requirements. Whatever, the problem I want to state is that in terms of custom product design, the business I launch have more competitive than interior design companies, since we have professional product designer and our own workshop.
In this aspect of the Chinese market, there are very few professional studios, only a certain degree of visibility of the company called "Loushang", specializing in window display. Compared with “Loushang”, our company specialize in a larger range of merchandising, including window display, shop front as well as interior decoration.
Trend report
By browsing the internet of “WGSN” and observing on the street, I summarized several trends of visual merchandising, without considering the brand background.
First style is considered comfort, which makes the environment of shop to be a living home, giving customers a relaxing space. Many of them embrace Japanese styling for serenity, making a warm mood by using soft and tactile texture, fluid and round forms, subtle lighting blending with surroundings and some natural elements like raw and earthy materials.
Another visual merchandising style in trend is tech-tility, a space between the real and the virtual. It is difficult to tell what is real and what is digital while it cares less about distinction. In this context, materials, colours, lights will be chosen for how they look on screen as much as how they appear in stores. Morphed metallic, textural iridescence and radiant dichroic sheens are often used to create a dreamy and otherworldly direction, digital-inspired dichroic effects, dazzling geometric visuals make for immersive settings.
Last but not least, the visual merchandising of reconstructed legacy is also very popular, this kind of style use modern design that honors the past as the tone of shops. With the rise of digital culture, the throwback appeal of vintage has become firmly embedded in design. Reconstructed legacy breaks the old rule of heritages and embrace bold colors, industrial materials like mesh, concrete and discard stone can be applied to create prop.
In conclusion, the three merchandising styles above are the most popular styling currently, apart from them, there are a lot of other visual merchandising styles, such as geometrics and giant monsters. One thing to add, though my target clients are small and medium shops, they can have their own brand style, and that is the meaning of our bespoke design service.
