After lounging at home and ruminating on her nagging thoughts for some hours, her day unfolded in its typical rhythm. The black-haired curse user got ready for her shift, quickly redoing her signature braid and grabbing her tote bag. After completing her usual ritual before work, she approached the door, her hand hesitating on the cold metal of the handle. She scanned her organized room and her gaze fixated on a particular floorboard slightly askew. With practiced ease, she pried it open to reveal the object of her recent dread: the finger.

Her anxiety remained a constant companion throughout the afternoon. Hana's intuition screamed that Gojo's sudden departure was more than it seemed, but she couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason why. As a precaution, she fashioned the finger into a makeshift amulet, tucking it under her shirt. She arrived swiftly to the coffee shop and the hours slipped away as she took orders and handed baked goods. Her worries were dulled by the constant buzz of the machines and chatter of the customers’, something she was thankful for.

As the sun began to set, Hana continued pushing her thoughts in the backburner, trying to focus solely on completing her tasks until her shift ended. She didn’t want to dwell in any of it and she had been able to do a pretty decent job at it, scrubbing the L-shaped counter, until a wave of strong cursed energy hit her. The recognizable aura made her stop her movements. She heard the chime of the closing café door and footsteps approaching her. Akiwara didn’t need to turn around to know who that was.

“Great.” Her voice was filled with sarcasm, trying to hide the waver in her voice. Her heart pounded, in a rhythmic panic. “You missed me that much?” 

Akiwara tossed the rag in the sink and finally turned around. Gojo stood there, wearing the school’s characteristic navy blue uniform, just like earlier that day. He seemed deep in thought as he inspected the pastries displayed. One lonely daifuku, a pair of matcha mochis and a taiyaki Hana had planned to take home were all that remained.

“Something like that.” He replied after a while.

The curse user stared at the sorcerer, in plain disbelief. He was seemingly less irritating than usual, which kind of alarmed her. Satoru continued to scrutinize the baked goods in silence. Hana expected him to say something, anything really. Her heart beated faster inside her chest, uncertainty filling her head. Hana toyed with the hem of her apron, her fingers tracing the fabric as she gathered the courage to break the silence.

“What brings you here, Satoru?” She asked, her voice steady despite the unease churning within her. “I’m sure you weren’t just passing by.”

Gojo lifted his head. “There’s no easy way to go about this.” He began, his voice heavy with a sigh. Akiwara noticed his stiff posture, hands buried in his pockets. “Itadori’s dead.”

His response took her off guard. She gripped the counter for support, her head felt dizzy. She must have misheard. “What- How?” Her voice was coarse, stammering. Hana blinked a few times as her vision turned blurry.

“I’m sorry.” His tone was sincere, but Hana could feel his gaze avoiding hers behind the blindfold. His features were covered by guilt.

“What happened, Satoru?” Her confusion quickly morphed into anger, spitting his name filled with venom. “What did you do to him?”

She felt a surge of resentment overcome her. Whether or not her anger was misplaced, he was responsible for this. Gojo was supposed to look after Itadori. After all, he was the reason why her friend had gone to Jujutsu Tech. She tried to steady her breathing, concealing the lump in her throat. She should at least hear him out to know what happened.

“I need you to come to the school with me, so you can see the body.” He said, his request sounding more like a plea than a demand. “I want to test something.”

Hana was dry, containing her tears with each breath she took. “Why would I do that?”

Inhale. Exhale.

“I have a feeling Itadori’s not truly gone yet.” Satoru remained stiff as he explained himself. Hana had a feeling he still wasn’t looking at her, that damned blindfold. “Your clan’s connections with Sukuna may give him another chance.”

It was no surprise for her that the man knew that piece of information. Her clan didn’t have a great name for itself.

“You’re going to have to tell me what happened.” Hana demanded, firmer.

Satoru seemed to deflate slightly. “He was sent on a mission. It was a trap and Sukuna ripped his heart out when he took over.” Before she could protest further, he continued. “I wouldn’t be asking you this if I wasn’t sure you could fix this situation.”

“How do I know this isn’t another trap?” The curse user frowned. Yuji’s death wasn’t enough for her to forget the target on her back.

“Because it isn’t. If I were to kill you, I would be upfront about it.” He simply stated it, his voice sending chills down her spine. Hana stared at him, conflicted. “The only people we are going to meet are the same ones willing to keep Itadori a secret if he comes back.”

“What do they know?” Hana's question was a flicker of vulnerability surpassing the walls she tried to contain her emotions with.

“No one in Jujutsu Tech knows much about you and your brother, aside from me. I mostly avoided telling them you have this .” Gojo admitted, his hand briefly grazing the spot where she hid the finger around her collarbones. “Think of this as me trusting you, Hana. I see your potential.”

Akiwara lifted her eyebrows in a skeptical manner, her eyes meeting his blindfold. “Potential or not, why are you so sure I can resurrect Yuji?”

“Oh, I don’t think you can.” Gojo’s reply was nonchalant, his laid-back tone taking her off guard again. “You’re going to contact Sukuna.” Akiwara’s features twisted into a frown, her eyes narrowing at his words. “You felt there was something wrong with him,” he gestured to the finger, “don’t try to deny that.”

The curse user rolled her eyes, but didn’t acknowledge what the sorcerer said. “Let me grab my things. I’ll be right back.”

After she collected her belongings and stepping out of the café, she noticed Satoru had taken the leftover baked goods with him. She decided against asking him, choosing instead to walk alongside him towards his car in silence. The ride was quiet, the only sound being the hum of the engine and the occasional rustle of the paper bag containing the sweets. She didn’t utter a word during the ride and he didn’t try to make conversation, allowing her to stare at the passing landscape as she continued thinking about what she had just decided to do. It wasn’t like she could jump out of the speeding car, although she had a feeling her brother would have preferred that.

Jujutsu Tech was located in the outskirts of Tokyo, hidden in the mountains. The campus was filled with traditional-style buildings and the amount of cursed energy felt a tad overwhelming for Hana. There were just too many sorcerers in one place or, maybe, she was just on edge. Before even the thought of fleeing crossed her mind, Satoru had already led her to the morgue. The fluorescent lights cast a harsh glow over the faces of Shoko Ieiri and Kiyotaka Ijichi, the two sorcerers that stood by Yuji's body. Their entrance didn’t go unnoticed, her presence intruding in the sterile room. Hana felt the weight of their stares on her, both strangers ignoring the fact that the tall sorcerer entered munching on the sweets of the cafe. She didn’t think she’d be able to stomach them anymore.

“You brought the curse user?” Shoko's voice was calm, cutting through the silence. Hana expected her to use a judgemental tone, but the medical-gown-wearing sorcerer didn’t seem to bother.

Gojo's reply was matter-of-fact. “Yep. This is Hana.”

Ieiri's eyes narrowed in her direction. The curse user in question fidgeted, aware that the woman had just noticed the little trinket she had with her. “You forgot to mention she was using one of Sukuna's fingers as a channel.”

“Didn’t think there had to be a problem.” Gojo retorted, meeting her gaze unflinching. “She’s here to help, right?”

Hana shifted uncomfortably by his side, sighing. “Of course. Yuji is my friend.”

“See? It’ll be fine.” His cheerfulness seemed to come back for a brief second. 

“You know I don’t doubt it.”

Akiwara watched the exchange in silence, concluding that they were close. Ieiri and Gojo, at least. The other sorcerer stood quietly in the room, trying to blend into the background until Gojo engaged him in conversation. The curse user drowned out the sound of their voices, her attention drawn to Itadori. Her heart ached as she saw him, his body lying lifeless on the autopsy table. She had avoided looking at him at first, trying to maintain her composure until Satoru would tell her what he wanted her to do. But now, her gaze was inexorably drawn to him. She walked towards him, her steps slow and hesitant, when she noticed Gojo had moved closer to Ijichi.

His eyes were closed, his skin a sickly pale, almost white. There was a gaping hole where his heart should have been. His hand was cold to the touch, but she held onto it, her fingers wrapping around his. She held it tight with her two hands, closing her eyes as she exhaled. “I’m so sorry.”

Hana bowed to the body of her friend for a few seconds and her eyes opened to meet… Yuji’s? The world seemed to stand still as she held his gaze.

“Hana?” The sound of her name startled her, her grip on his hand loosening as she straightened her back in surprise. Itadori sat up, his eyes scanning his surroundings. The hole in his chest was gone, his skin regaining some of its color. It felt like watching Bella turn into a vampire in real life. Blissful, but oddly off-putting.

Hana distantly heard the voices of the three other sorcerers in the room, but she disregarded them, focusing on Yuji only.

“Yuji…” She mouthed his name. Her arms instinctively found their way around him, pulling him into a tight embrace as she shook off the initial shock. 

Yuji hugged her back, his voice weak but filled with warmth. “Hana, what are you doing here?” He looked down at himself, realizing his… lack of clothing. Hana noticed, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson as she hastily broke the hug. She averted her eyes, a respectful distance now between them. “Wow, where are my clothes?”

Ieiri, quick to diffuse the awkwardness, handed him a shirt as Gojo approached them. “Yuji. Welcome back.” He extended his hand for a high-five, which Itadori returned with a small, disoriented smile.

As Gojo spoke with Itadori, Akiwara tried to steady her breathing, feeling her eyes water once again. She stepped out of the morgue with a shaky breath, not stopping until she reached the outside of the building. She knew it would be best to stay with Gojo, but she needed to calm down. She wasn’t going to break down there, in front of those sorcerers. She’d process her emotions at home, with her brother, where she felt truly safe.

Inhale. Exhale.

Leaning against the wall, Hana wiped away the stray tears that had escaped, careful not to smudge her eyeliner. It wasn’t waterproof. Thankfully, she had successfully regained her composure when Satoru and Shoko exited the medical building. Hana was perched on the railing, observing the deserted campus. The absence of people at this late hour brought her a small measure of comfort, but she was still acutely aware that she was in enemy territory.

The white-haired sorcerer's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “Here you are. I thought you had already left.”

Hana chuckled, turning around. “And walk down all those stairs alone? I'd probably get lost before I even reached them.”

Satoru's smile widened at her response. He seemed pleased with the outcome, and she shared his sentiment, to an extent. Yuji was alive, which was great news, but she had set a foot in Jujutsu Tech. Hana grimaced at the thought; it was a line she had never intended to cross. She had no desire to mingle with sorcerers, yet here she was. She sighed, feeling overwhelmed by the night's events. She hoped Yuji wasn’t mad at her for leaving like that. The two sorcerers started walking and the curse user followed them, not wanting to get left behind.

“Should I update the records?” Shoko asked, glancing at the tall man.

“No, leave them as is.” He replied instantly, already having made his mind up. “It’s safer this way, I want him to be able to defend himself next time they set a trap.” He explained further. “I’m sorry, Shoko, but could you leave him as dead in the records?”

The doctor shrugged, casting a brief glance at Hana. “So, you plan to keep Itadori and the curse user hidden away?”

Hana stared at Satoru expectantly. “No, she is going to join the school soon .” He emphasized, turning to face her. The curse user raised her eyebrows in disagreement. “I’ll have Itadori make his comeback in time for the Exchange Event.”

“Why?” Ieiri asked, plainly.

“It’s pretty simple. No one is allowed to take youth away from young people.” Gojo turned to Akiwara. His smile tinged with gratitude, he was being sincere. “Now, now. Your job here is done. It wasn’t so bad, see?”

“I guess…” Akiwara shrugged. Aside from her little breakdown, there wasn’t much to it. “I still don’t know if I even did anything- I just held his hand.”

Gojo eyed her. “You didn’t feel anything?”

The curse user rolled her eyes at his inquiry. “I felt light-headed, but I think that’s because this place makes me nauseous.”

Shoko laughed at her comment. “I hope you know what you’re doing, Gojo. I won’t update the records.” She turned to Hana, offering her a tired smile. “Until next time.”

With a wave and a cheeky grin, Satoru bid farewell to the doctor sorcerer. Hana just smiled back at her. The sorcerer and the curse user then set off towards the exit, their footsteps echoing in the silence. Hana fiddled with the straps of her bag, replaying the events in the morgue. She didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary. As ridiculous as it seemed, the man was pretty sure she would be able to help. If she had done anything, she would gladly take credit for it, but she hadn’t. She couldn't even recall if she had felt Sukuna's cursed energy during their encounter.

As they neared Gojo's car, Hana decided to break the silence. “Maybe it was the power of friendship what helped Yuji.”

“Yeah, maybe.” He shrugged, and gave her one of his irritating smiles as he unlocked the car. “You still have to give me an answer. Did the power of friendship convince you to stay?”

“Yuji isn’t attending until when now?” She retorted, climbing into the vehicle. She fastened her seat belt and gave the man a pointed look as he mimicked her actions. “There’s no power of friendship to begin with to convince me to attend Jujutsu Tech.”

The sorcerer hummed, pretending to be deep in thought, then looked at her. “You could make lots of friends, heh.”

“I’m not a child, Satoru.” She frowned. How old was he anyway? She studied him for a moment, Gojo didn’t even look much older than her, six years tops. “I need to talk with my brother about this. Then, I’ll give you an answer.”

The answer would still be no, but she didn’t have the energy to fight him.

Satoru started the engine, nodding. “Well, remember, it’s either joining or being executed.” He continued smiling sickly.

You should really work on your convincing tactics.” Hana’s frown deepened, baffled.

“I can be really persuasive.” He replied, batting his eyelashes at her. She looked away, a soft laugh escaping her lips.

This man was really something. Hana didn’t understand what to make out of him, other than thinking he seemed a tad childish in his position of “the strongest”. He might as well just be weird, which wasn’t something exactly out of the norm in the curse users she had met.

As Satoru began to drive, the woman found herself stealing glances at him. The topic of Yuji remained an enigma for her. She didn’t know what he was going to do regarding that matter, really.

She broke the silence once again, the question already having left her lips before she could dwell into her thoughts further. “Will I be able to see Yuji again?”

“We’ll see about that.” His reply was vague. He glanced at her, his eyes twinkling. “If only you enrolled…”

“Oh, shut up.” Hana muttered, shaking her head.

He sighed, his expression turning serious. “He's safe in the school, and I don't think it's a good idea to let you see him. For now.”

His words didn’t do much to ease her. In fact, it only fueled her frustration. “Yeah, super safe.” Hana replied bitterly.

The rest of the ride was spent in silence. Their playful banter had died down with her comment, and Satoru seemed to understand her need for quiet, which she appreciated. Maybe she had been a bit harsh, but hiding Itadori in a place full of sorcerers seemed downright stupid. When they reached her house, a wave of unease washed over her. How did he even know where she lived?

Sighing, she concluded it was probably Yuji who had given him that piece of information.

“Goodbye, Satoru.” She spoke, dryly, as she undid her seatbelt and opened the car door.

Gojo's eyes tried to meet hers, failing as she was already stepping out of his vehicle. There was a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze behind his blindfold before it washed away. "Goodbye, Hana."

Hana walked towards her apartment complex, not looking back. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had just passed some sort of test.

Less than a week later, Yuji was pretty much delivered to her home. Hana’s resentment towards the blindfolded prick had been growing in the last few days, aggravated by her lack of knowledge about her friend’s whereabouts. Her emotions were back in check and so was her perception of Gojo.

The curse user sighed at the vessel’s facial expression.

“He didn’t even tell you why I was there when you woke up?”

Itadori nodded slightly. He shifted in his sitting position on the couch, where both of them now sat. His legs stirred under him as he watched Hana rest her chin on top of her knees. The girl crouched in front of him, on the other side of her black couch. Her dark pajamas and colorful choice of socks would have raised a laugh out of him if only the last few weeks hadn't occurred. Yuji wished he could just erase them, he really did.

He kept his brown eyes on her gray ones as she spoke. “I thought you knew.”

“Gojo has explained little about you.” He shrugged.

His mentor didn't have any problem avoiding certain topics, despite his incessant complaints. Yuji knew he hadn't outright lied to him. He never denied the fact he wasn't telling him everything, but that didn't make it less annoying.

“What did he say about me?”

That got her full attention. Itadori didn't miss the way she lifted her brows at him. It was him who sighed this time. “He told me you're unpredictable and that makes you dangerous. That's all I needed to know.”

“Is that why you looked terrified when we met in the bakery?”

She openly smiled at him, just like she used to when she mocked him. Yuji Itadori was used to that smile, but that didn't mean he was immune to it. He started playing with the laces of his turquoise hood.

“No- Well, yes.” He rectified, almost stuttering. “To a point.” The vessel could feel his cheeks getting warmer under the curse user's stare. “You're still my friend.”

Hana needed to know. “What do you think about me, then?”

The girl lifted her head.

“You're a good liar.” Yuji was blunt. Ouch. “But I believe you had your reasons.”

Her head was on top of her knees once again. She turned her head to her left, deciding to avoid her friend’s eyes as she let the words sink in.

She had reasons. She used to have them, anyways. She wasn’t certain anymore.

“If I knew what was going to happen that night, I would have told you, Yuji.” She finally looked back at him. “You wouldn't have that thing inside you.”

The vessel had a frown fixed on his brows. “It's not your fa-”

“But it really is.” Hana was abrupt. “You know that.”

“I just… Don’t understand why you wanted it.” Yuji admitted, watching Hana’s features. “What were you planning?”

“Nothing evil.” The girl assured him and chuckled, as her heart beated faster on her chest. “It’s just a cursed object I wanted to try, you know my technique absorbs cursed energy, right?”

The legend of Sukuna, the big, bad cursed spirit dating back from the Heian Era, had been etched into Hana’s consciousness from a tender age. His power had been fragmented into twenty severed fingers. Cursed objects were powerful and quite useful for her technique, cursed energy manipulation. 

Hana believed Yuji wasn’t asking the right questions. The reason why she wanted the finger and what she was planning on doing with it was simple: she wanted to channel it. Her technique allowed her to -quite literally- copy and paste techniques when she used others’ cursed energy. Just like she had when she had met Satoru Gojo. She copied his abilities and used Sukuna’s as a distraction.

Of course, understanding the techniques she used was as much of a requirement as channeling the energy of her opponents was. It didn’t come naturally to her using others’s energies.

Convenience was another one of her reasons. In reality, she could have just channeled any other cursed object. Many of them were singular and heavily guarded, hidden. The twenty fingers were scattered, some even serving as talismans warding off the bigger curses. The Akiwara’s intrigue in these fingers was sparked by their grandmother’s tales, although the passage of time had faded many of the details. Their nana, who had left Japan in her youth, introduced them to the intricacies of jujutsu. After all, their relatives hadn’t been able to use cursed energy and their matriarch was the sole source of knowledge for the twins.

It was only last year that the Akiwara’s path intersected with a curse user, a meeting none of the siblings cherished. Hana had been looking for information about her clan and the elusive cursed object, which resulted in drawing unwanted attention. This stranger’s interest mirrored her own, and he provided the twins with snippets of knowledge. Nothing worth the meeting, really. Kenji and Hana met a few more curse users along the way, but it wasn’t until recently that her brother found an actual lead.

Weeks before Hana found herself entwined with sorcerers, Kenji had caught wind of a potent cursed object rumored to be within the walls of their university. He betted it was one of Sukuna’s fingers and he was proven correct. In comparison to him, Hana had made little to no progress in her stupid occult club. Who knew actually looking for information would have achieved something, heh? Hana hadn’t been particularly invested in the search for the finger, focusing instead on having a little break from jujutsu for the meantime. Kenji, on the other hand, was relentless in his pursuit of knowledge. His break was quite short lived.

However, Hana's efforts weren’t entirely in vain. You see, there were few individuals who would listen to her blab about occult-related stuff and also want to partake in the conversation. Even though they weren’t actually knowledgeable in jujutsu, she believed they would serve some purpose as minions. It was because of Yuji’s insistence she joined the club. He was the first classmate to approach her, which kind of spoiled her plan of being the loner of the class.

Yuji seemed to be spoiling many of her plans.

Despite her initial reluctance to form close connections with others, especially as the older girl who had been held back a year, she gradually grew attached to her fellow club members. They didn't prove to be particularly helpful in her search, yet she began to develop genuine friendships with them. The only thing she regretted was ever telling them about the finger’s possible location.

The twins were no strangers to manipulation, having navigated a world that seemed perpetually against them. Despite her new friends’ lack of knowledge about curses, Hana believed they would make the task of finding the finger easier. She had no intention of just unsealing it on school grounds, knowing that such a powerful cursed object would attract even more curses, especially the stronger ones.

But those… idiots, just did it regardless.

It was supposed to be nothing more than a lighthearted joke when she talked about unsealing the finger, a bit of encouragement wrapped in humor. Hana was aware of Iguchi and Sasaki’s fascination with the supernatural, and Itadori seemed to be glad of taking part in the club’s antics. They had a great time when Akiwara, using a burst of cursed energy, knocked over Sasaki’s bottle during a ouija board session. Their screams amused the curse user, but she still brushed it off saying it had been her fault by being clumsy. It was harmless fun.

The day her friends found the cursed object, Hana was tied up at work. Iguchi and Sasaki forgot she’d be all afternoon at the café, and Yuji wasn’t even there as he was also occupied. Unbeknownst to her, the unsealing of the finger had unleashed a horde of curses that targeted her friends, wreaking havoc in their university. With the help of a sorcerer, Itadori dealt with the chaos and the night ultimately resulted in him ingesting the finger.

By the end of her shift, Akiwara had a few unread messages and a missed call from Itadori. It was more than enough to make her rush to the hospital, where her friend had informed her they were. A sense of urgency propelled her through the hospital’s sliding doors, as she skillfully avoided the few people that lingered around. She found Yuji at the reception, sitting down as he waited for her. Her gaze fixed on him as she strode towards him, her steps quickening. His usual bright demeanor was dimmed, replaced by a grim expression. Hana’s mind was clouded by her friends’ well-being when she sat next to Yuji, unaware of his recent change.

“How- how are they?” The curse user asked, trying to calm her erratic breathing. She fidgeted with her hands, her eyes searching in her friend’s ones for answers. “What happened?

“The ceiling in our club room just… collapsed.” Yuji’s reply was quiet. His gaze met hers, concerned. “They’re stable, but they got hurt pretty bad.” 

Hana’s heart sank. “How bad are we talking?”

“Mild concussion for both,” Yuji recounted, his voice barely above a whisper, “Iguchi’s arm broke trying to protect Sasaki, and she sprained her ankle. They were unconscious when help arrived, and haven’t awakened yet.” Hana nodded, begging him to continue. “They’ll be fine, the doctor assures they’ll recover with rest.”

“I hope so…” She mumbled as a response. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”

“You couldn’t have known, Hana.” Yuji consoled, offering a comforting touch on her shoulder. “I didn’t even…” “

“You didn’t see anything… strange?” Hana inquired, her voice trailing off as she averted her gaze. Yuji looked at her, frowning. “I mean they said they were-”

“I didn’t.” Yuji interjected, but Hana wasn’t able to decipher the conflict in his tone. “They told me they were waiting for me before doing anything, and… the ceiling had already collapsed by the time I got there.”

Relief washed over Hana, mingled with a twinge of disappointment. The chance to obtain one of Sukuna’s fingers had slipped through their fingers, quite literally.

Despite feeling a twinge of guilt for putting her friends at risk, she reminded herself that it was their own idea. Kind of. She merely shared a rumor with them, without giving any specific instructions. Yet, the guilt lingered, weighing heavily on her conscience. Normal humans and their stupidity weren’t something she could control, but Hana had grown fond of them. She shouldn’t have gotten them into this mess.

As she was deep in thought, Itadori battled with his own inner turmoil. It was probably going to be the last time he saw her before going with Gojo and Fushiguro to who knows where. The boy, now a vessel, hadn’t really thought about the consequences of his impulsive decisions. He acted on instinct and it somehow worked out. His friends were alive and the powerful curse he now housed wasn’t in control of his body. The only thing he could ask for was Hana's presence in his life, even though it was probably for the best that they remained apart.

Neither of them wanted the other to be entangled in the world of jujutsu. It was quite ironic.

Yuji’s voice broke the silence. “Hana, I… I wanted to say goodbye. I’m transferring to another university in Tokyo.” Hana looked at him in shock as she processed his words. “My grandpa passed away today. He always talked about that uni… I think it’s what he would have wanted.”

Hana reached out, her hand finding Yuji’s as an offer of comfort. “I’m so sorry, Yuji..”

Yuji's only parental figure, Wasuke Itadori, had played a significant role in his life. Hana had met him when she accompanied Yuji on one of his visits to the hospital. He was a stubborn old man, but his mood lifted dramatically when he took notice of Hana. She laughed at one of the man’s jabs at his grandson, not fully comprehending the inside jokes the family had. It was endearing and, sadly, Hana understood all too well Yuji’s need for a change of scenery now that all he had was gone.

She would miss him, truly. The bond between Hana and Yuji was evident, despite the existence of certain unspoken topics. Hana believed that as their friendship blossomed, she would have eventually shared more about herself. Anything related to jujutsu was off the table, though. Hana recognized her friend's innocence, and didn't want to burden him with it. The danger of getting the unwanted attention of sorcerers or curse users was enough to stop her from telling him anything. Kenji and her had cut ties with cursed users many months ago for that very reason.

They embraced and parted ways with a heavy heart. As Hana made her way home, her thoughts were already on visiting Sasaki and Iguchi once they awoke. But as the weeks went by her friends remained unconscious, Hana and Kenji resumed their search for the next finger, which you already know how it ended.

sweat made his shirt cling to him uncomfortably, darkened patches under his arms like shadows. normally, reiner wouldn't have exerted so much, but something seemed to have taken over his students that day, winding everyone up for quite the eventful game of dodgeball -- one reiner found himself enjoying perhaps a little too much. he swiped a towel across his forehead, bidding the kids goodbye as they trickled out of the gym like a lazy river.

"later, coach braun!" a lively pack of boys whooped and hollered as they darted past him, making the blonde smile.

reiner loved his job. he loved the kids, from the show-offs to the wallflowers; he loved cheering them on and teaching them new games; but the best perk of this gym teacher gig, he decided, was the teachers lounge.

sure, there was a well-stocked pantry and some expensive coffee that erwin, one of the history teachers, always kept on hand. it was air-conditioned and cooled him down much faster than the little dinky fan he had in his office.

yeah, the teachers lounge was a little slice of paradise. but the best part?

running into the art teacher.

"hard day, coach braun?"

and there you stood, your hair a little messy and that flowy skirt dancing around your knees. you pulled your lunch out of the fridge -- a fruit salad, he noted -- and straightened up again to smile at him. reiner returned the gesture, feeling a tad sheepish to feel so unkempt in front of you. "the kids played pretty hard today," he breezed past an empty table to take up stock beside you, who always chose the seat closest to the windows.

he loved the way the golden sun caught you. the high points of your face, the shine in your hair, the glimmer of cute homemade jewelry you loved to sport. glancing at your wrist, reiner noticed a new piece in your collection -- a little woven bracelet, with tiny charms dangling off of it. "what about you? i don't see any paint in your hair this time." reiner gripped the water bottle he toted in with him. he played with the cap absently, like a little nervous tic.

as he sat, looking hulkingly huge in the plastic chair, you caught his gaze, and quipped a quick 'oh!' before digging into your cardigan pocket. "no paint today, but we made these," and between delicate fingers, you held a similar bracelet, presenting it to him like a prized trophy. this one was much larger than the one you wore, but held matching little trinkets: two little hearts, a sun, and a moon. "they're good luck charms. told 'em if you have good, happy thoughts while you make it, then you'll have a good day every day you wear it."

reiner hummed, sipping the water and willing away the dryness that overtook his mouth. "oh, to be nine years old again." he mused.

the smile on your face was far too contagious, spreading to reiner before the swirls of butterflies in his stomach could register what was happening. "gimme your hand."

the blonde blinked, but obliged regardless. "you made one for me?"

and you laughed, scooting closer in your chair. "yeah, we're matching."

the cool brush of your fingers across his heated skin was a lot to handle. but reiner swallowed, watching closely as you tied it around his wrist, offering a small tap after it was secured. "i know it's not the manliest thing--"

"no, i love it," he sputtered, unable to contain either the goofy grin or the flush over his face. hopefully he could play it off as part of the post-exercise cooldown. "thank you."

you scrunched your face up that cute way you do when something amuses you, tucking a few strands of hair behind your ear. "just promise you'll think of me when you wear it."

"i promise."

the next day, reiner moseyed along the outdoor track with a few stragglers that either refused to run with the others or couldn't keep up. he listened to the idle chatter, not too sure what most of it meant, but offered chuckles or affirmations here and there.

"coach braun?" a particularly quiet girl quipped, and reiner offered her a hum in response. she eyed the hand at his side, looking almost amazed. "did you make that?"

reiner glanced down, peering at the woven bracelet and the charms that glimmered in the sun. a fond, lovesick smile grew over his face.

"no, it was a gift, from someone very sweet. it's a good luck charm, y'know."

Chapter One

“Fucking hell.” You sighed as you looked at the still tall stack of essays that needed grading. “I’m never getting through this.”

Your stomach grumbled, signaling it was time for a break. Stretching, the quiet was interrupted by the sound of your bone’s protest from sitting in one position for hours. It was nights like these you had regretted your choices. Sure you had known Professor Jacob loved to torture his students with too much work, but when you took the job as his assistant you assumed that he’d shoulder some of the weight. A ridiculous thought now that you’ve experienced working with him. Why should he even think of grading an assignment when he had a perfect little lackey doing it for him? That was a non question. He had been strict about the work not leaving his office, which meant you had accidentally fallen asleep in his office more than often than you would have liked. The pile of work never seemed to diminish. 

Walking out the office, you thought briefly of the joy you would feel when you’d never have to see it again. These long corridors would be a thing of the past in just a few, short months. Then you’d probably go to the city and struggle for a while but at least you would be free from here. As much as you prided yourself for getting through the first round of college, the walls of the building gave you more of an annoyed feeling than anything. 

Pushing open the door to the teachers lounge, you made a beeline for the fridge. The leftover pizza already seemed like a feast until you noticed it was nowhere to be seen. “Hannibal,” you whined to the empty room as you closed the fridge. 

“Yes, darling?” 

You startled, immediately turning around to face him, a mischievous smile was plastered on his lips. Usually your missing dinner meant to head over to his office. It wasn’t typical, but the two of you had managed a comfortable friendship between the shared late nights. Though, you suspected he’d stay longer than necessary to accompany you in the empty building. “Would you mind telling me where my dinner went, handsome?” You asked, raising a brow at him.

“Old pizza can hardly be considered dinner. Come,” he motioned to sit next to him at the table, “I’ve got a better meal prepared for you nonetheless.”

“Or maybe you just need to learn to appreciate the simple things,” you quipped as you took your seat.

“And you, the finer.”

You gave him an obvious look over, “I’d say I appreciate you plenty enough.” 

Being so forward wasn’t usually in your cards. However Hannibal had always been a gentleman and it had been fun to tease at him a bit. He never complained, often just acknowledging what you said with a raised brow or chuckle. Still there was always some truth in jokes and you’d be lying to say that he was anything less than tempting. Especially in the dark grey suit and dried blood red shirt of his. ‘No’ wouldn’t come to mind if he ever offered.

“Naughty, Miss LN,” he chided you, “What shall we do with you?”

“What do you want to do with me?”

“Eat your dinner,” he said, humor in his voice as he shook his head.

You choked back a comment about him just wanting to see your mouth stuffed, deciding it was too much of a push. Instead you just opened the lunchbox he placed in front of you. Hannibal watched you expectantly as you took a bite of the meat.

Closing your eyes, you savored the bite. It had been a while since you had something home cooked. “Han... I’m going to miss you most. I don’t know what I’m gonna do without you. Delicious, as always.”

“I’m sure you’ll do just fine.” He went back to work on his own stack of papers as you ate. “Though, I’m not sure I’m ready to allow you to live off street food once we part.”

“Guess we’re gonna have to find me another man that insists on throwing away my perfectly good food to serve me home cooked meals.”

Hannibal left some remarks on a paper before pushing it to the side. “You could always come learn a few things. Maybe I’ll rest better knowing you know how to make yourself a couple of decent meals. Any guesses for the meat?”

It was a strange guessing game, but you indulged him, he was just eccentric. “Oh, definitely human,” you teased, making sure to pick up some spinach and artichoke in the next bite, “Probably had a boring name like David.”

“Close. It was Richard,” he corrected. 

“Beef, it was the Rolex of all farm animals hand picked by you and I’m very grateful you shared some with me,” you smiled at him, “So how are things going with Baltimore?”

“I’ve found a beautiful home. The office, however, seems to be harder to find.”

“I’m sure you’ll find the perfect one.” Your phone started ringing. Grabbing it from your pocket, you looked at the screen. Mom. “They’re making this unnecessarily difficult,” you sighed to yourself. 

Hannibal looked at you with peaked interest as you shut off your phone and pushed it away. “Is something troubling you?”

“My parents aren’t taking too kindly to the no contact rule. It’s the tenth call today.”

“You’ve cut them off?”

“I thought about what you had said,” you shrugged, “I’m tired of always having to get them out of troubles and be their ATM when I don’t have enough for myself. It’s just too much on me right now. Between school assignments, Jacob’s work pile, and my other part time, it’s all just suffocating. They keep trying to use my grandfather’s death as a leverage to make me feel bad about not talking to them now, but they just want some money. I don’t want to feel guilty about this but I can’t help it.”

“Don’t,” he placed his hand over yours, “You deserve to feel taken care of and appreciated. They aren’t providing you with that now. Especially now when they use the death of the person who raised you as leverage,” he shook his head, making a disgusted sound, “It’s for your own well-being that you take some time to breathe and be young. They provide too much stress…” Hannibal fell silent. “I’ve suggested this before but i-“

You gave his hand a gentle squeeze before pulling away. “I’m not taking your money. We’re friends. Money complicates things. Muddies the waters.”

“Friends help each other,” he reminded you, “I’ve already told you I wouldn’t want any payment.”

“But I’d still feel like I owe you.” You shook your head, “It wouldn’t feel right to me. I’m fine. I promise. Though, if you’re so willing to help me with something, I wouldn’t say no to those cooking lessons. They could be fun.”

He spared you a smile, “It would be my pleasure to teach you what I know.”

“And I’d never deny your pleasure,” your mouth spoke before you could think about it, “Sorry.”

“I don’t deny myself pleasure either,” he said, amused. “You’re fine. Now, how about we meet on Sunday? I’ll have time to figure out a full meal and gather all of the ingredients.”

“Great!” You ignored the heat that still lingered on your face, “I- um, do you need me to bring anything?”

“Nothing at all, I’ll make sure to take care of everything. All you need to do, sweet girl, is bring yourself and an appetite.”

You stifled a pleased smile at the term of affection. “I’ll make sure to do that,” sparing a glance to the clock, you frowned, “I should probably get back to work on those essays.”

“Why don’t we work on them together?” He suggested. “My colleague is notorious for drowning you in his work. I can help you sort through it all and you can have a restful Saturday without Micheal’s added stress.”

“I really can’t ask that of you. You already have enough work as it is.”

“We’ll work together. First your work, then mine. What happened to never denying my pleasure?” 

Your eyes widened, but you laughed all the same. Maybe a while more in his company wouldn’t be so bad. “Fine. Hold me to my words, but it’s only going to cause you a headache. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. These new kids are… something else.”

“They’re nothing,” he stood, grabbing his papers in one hand, “Meet me in my office. We can be more comfortable there and I may have stowed away a bottle of wine.”

“What would I do without you Doctor Lecter?”

“You have arrived at your destination,” the robotic voice informed you as you parked.

You took in the mansion of a home. It was too big for someone that lived alone. The thought made you shiver. Homes should be filled with life, not empty space. Then again, he was a fan of dinner parties, extravagant ones at that, so you supposed there was life in those walls on occasion. The home itself reminded you of the houses in old movies. Ones where the lightning would strike at just the right moment as a warning to stay away. But this was real life and there was no lightning, just a sun setting on a near perfect day. 

Without a warning telling you to keep away, you grabbed the gift bag and stepped out of your car. He had said to bring nothing, but you couldn’t resist a simple gift. The ties in the bag had taken out a decent chunk from your pocket, but he deserved them. Between agreeing to give you cooking lessons and helping you out with grading every so often, the simple pieces of fabric meant nothing. Besides, it was a two way gift, he’d get more of the patterned ties he was fond of and you’d get to see him in the darker colors you liked on him, knowing he’d feel compelled to wear them to show you his gratitude.

Knocking on the door, you waited a couple of minutes before he emerged. “YN, just in time. Please, come in,” he stepped to the side, “I’ve looked forward to this all day.”

You smiled and stepped past him. “I have too. Entertained myself a bit today by finding you a gift.” 

“Darling, you shouldn’t have.”

Nervousness bit at you slightly, a bit self conscious they’d be too cheap for his taste. Too late to back out of it, you handed over the bag. “You’ve always been so kind and I really appreciate everything. Let me do something for you.”

He set the bag on the nearby table, laying out the ties to get a better look at them.  “They’re all lovely,” he ran a finger across the fabric of a maroon one, “Fond of me in darker colors, YN?”

“What can I say?” You shrugged, “We catch ourselves spending a lot of time together. Why not make you a decent piece of eye candy?”

“Inappropriate,” he chided you, before signaling you to follow after him.

“You just wear them so well, Doctor Lecter.”

Shrugging off his navy suit coat, he draped it over a chair, making quick work of rolling up his sleeves. “Ready to get your hands dirty, my little sous-chef?”

“What are we making?” You asked, looking at his kitchen wide eyed. It was definitely bigger than your measly studio apartment. 

“Frisee aux lardons, duck with a pomegranate-citrus glaze. I took the liberty of preparing a blood orange sorbet for dessert.”

“I have a proposal.”

“Yes?”

“We don’t do any of that and just have dessert for dinner.”

“No,” he gave you an amused glance, “There’s more pleasure in waiting for things. Why don’t you start washing up the vegetables and I’ll start preparing the duck?”

You stuck your tongue out at his back but set to your work. “This is what I get for befriending a charming old guy.”

“Keep going the way you are and our next meal together will be langue d’Agneau en papillote.”

“That can’t be a threat if I don’t know what that means,” you quipped, setting aside an endive. 

“It means, darling,” he pointed his knife at you, “The fondness I feel for you is an inconvenience. Nonetheless, it’s welcomed.”

You smiled at him brightly, as you brought the washed vegetables over to him. “I’m fond of you too, but you gotta stop flirting and teach me how we’re gonna cook Daffy here.”

He motioned for you to grab a cutting board and a knife of your own. The two of you worked in quiet harmony, occasionally he’d tell you exactly why he was doing something a certain way or just give you simple instructions and let you have a hands on feel of exactly how to prepare something. It was nice to see him in his element. Hannibal seemed much more content in his kitchen than any where you had seen him at the college. Eventually he set his work to the side and washed his hands. 

“You’re cutting them too thick. Thinner is better for this dish.” He stepped behind you, “Do you mind?”

“Go ahead.” You attempted to move to the side, but Hannibal had already caged you in between himself and the counter. His cologne was different from the one you were accustomed to him wearing, but the subtle spice of it gave a more homey feeling to him. 

Hannibal grabbed your hand that had yet to  let go of the knife. He made sure to show you how to cut them the right thickness. “See? A little thing can unbalance everything.”

“Hm,” you hummed, catching yourself relaxed against the man, his frame strong against yours, “I don’t see much of a difference. Pretty sure this is just your variation of a putter.”

“You assume I have hidden motives,” He acknowledged, looking down at you, “And if there were any?”

Taking the bait, you pressed a kiss to the side of his jaw. “I wouldn’t be too upset.”

His head dipped into your shoulder, taking in a breath. “What happened to not wanting to bring on complications in our friendship?”

“We only have weeks left with each other,” you shrugged, “There wouldn’t be any complications. Not really.”

“We really should get back to making our dinner, darling,” he sighed, almost seeming reluctant to pull away, “What else did you did you do today?””

It took you a second to respond, still shaking off the embarrassment. You weren’t sure what had compelled you to do that. When you looked up at him you grimaced. Grabbing a napkin, you carefully wiped away the lingering lipstick. “The ties were the more interesting part of the day, I didn’t plan anything eventful. Honestly most of my day was taken with trying to recall the shop you mentioned that carried the ones you liked.”

He hummed in appreciation, “You also managed to pick out two I have had my eye on. I’ve got new suits coming in soon that will pair perfectly.”

You beamed at that, happy he did actually like what you had chosen. “Lucky guess. It was difficult remembering the ones I had seen you wear.”

Hannibal made to grab some ingredients and set them on the counter near the stove. “Have your parents tried calling you this weekend?”

You sighed, sure you didn’t have to tell him the truth but you wanted to, he had a compelling thing to him that made it easy to just speak. “I sent them money for rent. Which was honestly the dumbest thing I’ve done in a while.”

“It wasn’t idiotic,” he stated, setting to work on making the pomegranate sauce as you watched, “They’re you’re parents. It’s only natural you worry about them. Though, I do worry they’ll think of you as a person that doesn’t stick to her word.”

“I know, I really meant to, but the thought of them out on the street. It’s not my responsibility, but I’m just so used to being their adult.”

“It’s difficult to detransition. You worry for them as they should worry for you.”  He checked over a pan he had been heating, “That’s perfect. If you could please..” Grabbing the plate with the duck you set them on the pan. “With duck it’s important to render off the fat. A low heat is necessary.”

You nodded, “Low and slow, got it... You know, I’m not sure they worry about me at all. I mean- I know they don’t. It should hurt, but it’s just a fact of life.”

“They didn’t give you an opportunity to be a child. When you were supposed to be in the most carefree moments of your life, they burdened you with the responsibilities of an adult.” He held out a spoon with some of the pomegranate sauce for you to taste. “Any pain the notion inflicted on you has been killed with time.”

“There are still moments though. Suppose that’s common enough, isn’t it Doc?” You leaned in, allowing him to feed you, “That tastes amazing. I really should have paid attention.”

“It’s simple, I’ll write it out for you later.” Casting the sauce aside, he set a pot of water to boil. “Very common. We aren’t too dissimilar when it comes to how quickly we had to grow up. Very different reasons, but the fall out isn’t much different. Our paths left us in places where we’re very much alone.”

“What happened?” You asked, realizing that he had known a great deal of your family and you had known nothing more past how his day had gone or his preference of coffee. “If you don’t mind me asking.”

“I don’t.” Hannibal went to fill two glasses with wine. “I was very young when my parents died. My father had implemented in me that, if anything were to happen, I was to take care of my mother and sister. Which meant I had grown fiercely protective of Mischa when the time came. Soon I was acting more as her father than a brother.”

“Where’s Mischa now?” You asked, knowing at the very least she had to be in her late twenties.

His lips set into a frown, he took a quick drink. “Lost her sometime after. There was a lapse of judgement on my part and she suffered because of it. My days have often been shrouded by the thought that I could have done better by her. The ways I failed burdens me significantly.”

You rubbed his arm sympathetically. “I couldn’t even begin to imagine that pain.”

“It’s something I never wish to experience again. Losing someone you love so dearly, it changes a person.”

“I’m sure you tried your best. You’re a good man. I’m sorry you had to go through all of that when you were so young.”

“You think too highly of me,” he patted your hand on his arm, “Far better than I deserve. Still if my childhood had taught me anything, it’s to value those I hold dear. Such as yourself.” 

“I’m glad we found each other. Even if it is for a short while.” You watched as he stepped back into the rhythm of cooking. Maybe you weren’t any help to him but watching him work was comforting. 

He raised a brow, “Just because the amount of time we physically see each other will diminish, doesn’t mean we need to completely break apart. I’d like to have you at my dinner table later in life.”

“I’d like it if we kept in touch,” you replied, looking at a small box on the counter. The small black beads glimmered in the light, calling at you to take a peek. A neat row of recipe cards in his impeccable penmanship, numbered as high as 120 but there could have been more. “That’s sweet,” you mused, looking at the back of a card, noticing a couple had business cards on them, “You keep track of your friends’ favorites like this?”

“Friends, acquaintances, business partners. It’s difficult remembering everyone’s preferences. When I have dinner parties I like to make sure there’s a bit of something for everyone.”

“Hm, well I’m sorry I don’t have a card for you to have.”

When everything was said and done, you helped Hannibal set up the plates to have dinner. The conversation became light as you laughed along to the better memories of Mischa. From his smile it was easy to see he adored the usually shy girl. You never pressed on to find out how she died, simply choosing to bask in his soft smiles and laughter instead of entertaining curiosity. It was easy to see he rarely talked about her and you were grateful that he found that much comfort in you.

Some time later he was sitting at his harpsichord, playing a self composed melody as you browsed his shelves. There was an almost familiar calm in the air, like this was a usual happening and it would simply just happen again. A naturally reoccurring moment. You found comfort in his presence too. 

You looked up from the shelves when you heard his sigh. “I can’t seem to master this melody,” he stated, “The ending never sounds right.” The annoyed demeanor contradicted his lax look. At least lax for him. His vest and suit jacket had been discarded a while ago leaving him with a popped button, loosened tie, and rolled up sleeves. “I may just leave this one in the air.”

“Sounds perfect to me,” you said, walking over to him, “Though we can be our own worst critics. I know I’m mine.”

“It sounds… forced. Almost as if it’s reluctant to work with me.”

“Forced things just need time.” You placed your hand on his shoulders, digging in your thumbs to relieve the tension you felt. A soft groan as he let his head lull back to rest against your stomach. “Time is all you need sometimes. I thought you would have learned that already, old man.”

He opened his eyes, raising a brow at you. “Always with that mouth.”

You smiled down on him fondly, something- probably the wine in your system -thought about pressing a kiss to his forehead right then. “What can I say? It has a mind of its own.”

“I do prefer when it’s otherwise occupied,” he stated, closing his eyes again.

Your fingers dug a little deeper at that, caught off guard. “And yet.”

Hannibal played a couple soft notes, seemingly testing the waters for his next attempt at getting it to sound right. “And yet.” The first melody seemed almost innocent, but was followed by a second seemingly stalking after it. “Would you mind putting on a record? It seemed I’ve grown bored with music of my own.”

“Sure thing, Han.” Giving his shoulders one final squeeze you pulled away from him. At the record table you browsed through his selection. Hannibal was still composing as you decided to go with a record that looked more worn than the others, figuring something well loved would help him out of his frustrated state. Setting it on the platter, you gave it a brief once over with the anti static brush, knowing he’d probably be attentive to that type of thing, and dropped the needle. The music filled the air as you took in the melody. “Very you.”

He let out a soft chuckle, abandoning the harpsichord, in favor walking over to you. “Very me, indeed.” Hannibal took the record sleeve out of your hand, setting it down on the table. The music’s build up reached. “Would you give me the honor?” His hand was stretched out toward you.

You gave him a sheepish smile, “Afraid I’m going to have to disappoint. I’m not much of a dancer.”

“I’ve been told I’m a wonderful teacher,” he pressed, a charming smile on his lips, “We all start somewhere. Let me be yours.”

A soft laugh bubbled from you as you took in his look of boyish excitement. “You’re not allowed to complain when I step on your toes.” You placed your hand in his. 

He gave a gentle squeeze to your hand. “If you’re too terrible, I’ll show you the way I taught Mischa. You can stand on my toes as I try to help you commit the movements into muscle memory.”

“Handsome and a comedian.”

“I try my best.” Hannibal gave you a gentle spin as he pulled you closer. A kiss was pressed to your hand before he placed it on his shoulder. “Now, just follow after me,” he instructed, placing his hand on your hip.

The room was for once peaceful. The bickering between Utahime and Gojo slowly subsided after an hour of tight and ringing barks form the woman at the ‘smart’ remarks of him. It was truly dreadful to be in the same lounge with them since Gojo made it his personal goal to irritate the brunette.

After a long day of searching for potential students with Utahime, you finally had the chance to relax. Taking a book in your hand, you sat on the brown leather sofa in the corner of the room, next to the window. An equally tired Shoko offered herself to make some you long needed tea - after all you have been wandering around Tokyo all day long, trying to detect any mark of Cursed Energy you could, in hope it would lead you to some potential sorcerers in need of training. The mission, however, was a failure and now you had an awful, hollow feeling in your chest. You couldn’t even focus on the words in front of you.

Your train of thought was interrupted by the feeling of being hit in the ear with an empty coffee cup and the loud shriek of Utahime. The woman stomped out of the room, mumbling under her breath insults meant for the white haired man, that just grabbed the cup out of her hand and smacked it into your head for attention.

As you look up, visibly confused, you see Gojo walk towards you, taking big steps. He wasn’t wearing his usual attire, opting for black, well-fitted formal pants and one of his too-expensive, plain blue shirts. You once looked up the price of one, just for fun, and were stunned at the numbers - what made it more unbelievable was that he owned 5 of them; who would even pay that much money on that? As you relished in his tall figure, Gojo crouched on the floor in front of you, smiling devilishly.

“Did I hit you?” he smirked, an obvious playfulness in his voice. Catching up on what he was doing, you decided to play his game.

“Yes. It hurt a lot.” you answered with an affected tone, looking directly in his bright, blue eyes, that lit up.

“It was you that it collapsed on?” he smiled, rasinig his eyebrows.

He let out another chuckle, the pressed himself closer to the couch, reaching for your hand. You were a little taken aback by his action, but nonetheless intrigued.

Strongly holding your hand in both of his large ones, he took the most devastated look in his eyes, all while grinning like a maniac. His long, slender fingers caressed gently the skin on your knuckles. He had turned off is Infinity.

“Please forgive me, I swear I’ll change” he cracked, while flexing his biceps under his shirt. Your gaze flew to the image of his muscles slowly tensing beneath the thin material, rising to the unbuttoned top, his long neck and sharp clavicle, all alluring to you. He knew by the widened eyes and red tint on you cheeks that he discovered your greatest weakness.

You averted your eyes from him, looking out the window, desperately hoping that he would see your flushed face and way too large smile on your face. Sadly for you, he did notice it and that just made him plea for your forgiveness even more, while flexing his muscles in front of you.

Walking into the room with a warm cup of tea in her hands and a cigarette in her mouth, Shoko stopped to marvel at the sight in front of her: Gojo begging on his knees and laughing at your flushed form. “What are you doing?” she asked amused.

“She won’t forgive me.”

“Not while you look like you’re out of The Matrix.” Shoko joked, making both of you laugh.

“He’s done too much, I don’t think I should forgive him” you tell her with a fake hurt look on your face, cheeks still stained pink.

“You shouldn’t, he’s manipulating you.” Shoko noted, observing the way he was tensing his body.

“What, do you want me to manipulate you too?” he asked, looking above his sunglasses with a playful shine in his blue eyes.

After a few seconds of silence all three of you started to laugh like crazy, especially Gojo who was wheezing on the floor, almost out of breath. By the time you calmed yourselves, your abs were aching from laughing and Shoko ended up spilling half the tea on her robe and dropped her cig in the rest.

“I’m going to make another” she grumbled under her breath heading again towards the kitchen.

Gojo and you looked at eachother and after a moment he sat on the sofa whispering to you to “Scoot over”. He laid his head on your chest, white hair falling on your shoulder and opened your book at the page you last read.

“You aren’t really mad, are you?” he murmured against your skin.

“No.” you smiled and pressed a kiss on the crown of his head.

He fixed his leather jacket

He knows he lay it down somewhere and now it’s gone

Paranoia was an old friend of yours.

Very real, very scary and not very nice to you, your peace of mind or your tested soul.

In your head, you already played out a million different ways the image you’d spent years building could come falling apart.

All because of him. Jeon Jungkook.

Though much to your surprise and fortune- he didn’t tell anyone.

You spent the entire weekend fretting over nothing.

It was almost like none of it ever happened.

Like your parents weren't about to tie the knot soon. Like you weren’t about to become step siblings.

Like he didn't walk in on his said step sister to be masturbating in front of a camera.

In the aftermath of that inexplicably humiliating incident, you had to make up some dumb excuse to satiate your viewers for ending the stream so abruptly.

It was your cat they heard speaking, you told them.

Things were awkward enough without you having to see him often so already in between fleeting glimpses at school and lingering glances over the occasional dinner.

He might have been able to play it cool because it didn’t matter to him but this was a big deal for you.

He knew your secret and what else were you to do but be on edge and fidgety around him even though it seemed like he wouldn’t say a word of it?

But in the end, you couldn’t voice out your concerns. Not to him and certainly not to your mom.

So you were stuck here.

In between a massive rock and a very hard place.

Forced to endure even though you really felt like you’d been pushed past your limit.

So you put on your best little bikini, grabbed a floatie and a soft drink and you went out.

This time around, dinner was a more relaxed affair.

The weather was nice so your mom decided on a barbeque at your back yard.

This meant you wore a flowy sun dress like your mom did and he wore a loose navy shirt with the sleeves rolled up and some black casual beach shorts.

His tattoos were on full display.

You stared.

You were only distracted by them and how the patterns dance on his skin when his muscles flex as he flips whatever he is cooking on the fire because she’s never seen them in full before, you strongly reasoned.

Even with his sleeves rolled up when he was uniform, you'd only seen what he had on his forearm briefly other than the ones on the back of his hand.

That night didn’t count. It was too dim to see well. Also, that night technically didn’t exist.

Your eyes were particularly drawn to the little something peeking out the collar of his shirt.

You were too busy trying to figure out whether the curling ink around his collar bone was the flick of flames or the end of a dragon’s tail to notice that he’d lifted the hem of his shirt to wipe at the dots of sweet at his brows.

When you do, you suddenly found yourself being given an eyeful of impossibly ripped, ridged pure muscle.

You almost dropped your glass like you did your jaw.

What the holy fuck?

At that exact moment, he lifted his gaze and caught you staring.

He was probably expecting you to look away. Any decent human would expect that if they caught someone staring at them so openly. Gawking, to be completely honest.

But you didn’t. You quickly recover, pulling yourself together, and you met his gaze squarely.

You clutched the drink in your hand tight. Your pride wouldn’t let you look away.

In your own way, it was your little pay back, weak as it was.

He held your gaze with an unreadable look on his face for a moment with that signature slight tilt to his head and an added lift to his brow, before he looked away. Wordlessly, he let his shirt fall to push his hair back with his hand and went back to grilling.

You let herself breath then and tried not to think about how his biceps flexed at the motion, how his hair slicked back made him look even more dangerous and how the little smirk you caught on his lips was making you feel things she shouldn’t be.

Your mom suggested you all hang out at the pool once you were done eating.

You hadn’t been there since that day with him and quite frankly, you would rather not be.

The walk up the spirally stairs to the study had got to be one of the most intense, dragging moments of your whole life.

He remained a few steps behind you all through out the journey, following your lead in his own leisured pace.

A few steps too damn far behind in your opinion.

From that angle, you had a strong inkling that he could see your underwear from beneath your dress.

You knew this because you were familiar with what it felt like when he was staring.

If awkward silence could manifest into a solid form for being so intense, there would have been a third occupant in the room the moment you two walked into the study.

Ps: for those who don't know, Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 12th of June in Brazil, and in June we have what we call the 'June Party', where it's time to exalt Brazilian folklore, and - for those who are Catholics - is the month of June Saints, the saints who baptized Jesus.

This month, there are parties where people go dressed as hillbillies, there is a lot of food, depending on the party, drinks, a lot of dancing, and it is for many the best time of year.

Couples tend to go matching, always wearing plaid clothes, with lace, ruffles and patches, and usually women braid their hair, paint their cheeks pink and men - for those who don't - paint a fake beard on their faces. They also wear a straw hat, and everything is very colorful.

"Just close your eyes. I will still be here when you open them again" He said, kneeling in front of her.

"Unfortunately," she said, but there was a smile on her face, a smile that James thought was adorable, and it matched her sun-rosy cheeks and the flaming strands of hair that fell over her face.

“I'll pretend to believe you.” He smiled, grimacing when she threw up again, what now felt like just water. "I'll never let you drink again."

"I never want to drink again," Lily laid her head on the toilet seat, her eyes almost closed and stared at James as if she was unable to focus her vision but was trying. The noise from the backyard party was still loud, but inside, the two of them on the bathroom floor, the silence was comforting.

"Famous last words." He shrugged, wanting to laugh but feeling sorry for her, who looked like she wanted to throw up some more. "Evans, you better pull yourself together, or I'll have to take you to the hospital, and I think it's the last place you want to go." James raised his eyebrows, wanting her to remember exactly where they were.

The idea at first was good; a weekend among friends at James' grandparents' farm, abusing every last drop of trust his parents had in him and Sirius. They promised they'd take care of the house, and it was going to be quiet, but now, when he looks out the window and sees Remus jumping off the roof into the pool, and Peter upside down trying to drink beer, he thinks things have lost a bit the control.

As long as nobody ended up in the hospital and nothing was broken, everything was perfect.

The nearest hospital was over two hours away, and none of them had the ability to drive for so long on a dirt road that it took a lot of concentration not to end up with a mired or overturned car.

"I'll be fine." She settled on the floor, leaning her back against the cool wall behind her and closing her eyes. It took James a lot of concentration to keep his eyes off her perfectly sculpted breasts, gorgeous in that black bikini. Her tanned skin made it difficult.

"Can you get up?" James asked, no longer able to stand being in such a small space with Lily so close to him, even though she had been vomiting less than a minute ago. She nodded and accepted his hand when he reached out.

"I'm great, Black." Lily tossed her hair back, as if she wanted to prove her point to him. “Dressing problems, Hess?” The girl was almost to the back door, ready to go unnoticed, but she stopped as soon as she heard her name.

Her cheeks caught fire, but her smile didn't waver.

"Yes, the knot was too tight." Hestia shrugged, pointing to the knot in her tanned back. "Sirius was helping me." James chuckled, noticing when Sirius nodded, trying to look as innocent as possible.

"I'm sure he helped." Lily looked at Sirius, then at Hestia, finally walking towards the door, her ass looking like the hottest thing in the world.

"Careful not to drool, Prongs." Sirius slapped the back of his head, looking like he wanted to wake him up from the perverted dream he was having, his drunken brain imagining everything he could do if Lily stopped looking at him just as a friend.

The day was sunny, and even with a little wind, there was a mass of hot air that made them sweaty even when they were standing still. Everyone was sporting a tan/redness from their carelessness, and tomorrow probably wouldn't be so kind to them, but James knew that no one here was caring about tomorrow and the possible side effects of spending too much time in the sun.

It was Sirius who had come up with the idea, after looking tired of hearing complaints from Peter and Hestia about how hot it was and how they wanted to go swimming somewhere. James had blamed him for just organizing this because it was a reason for him to see Hestia in bikinis, because this wasn't the first summer Peter had complained about the heat, but it was the first that the girls had joined their group.

They had met in college, Lily was in the lab with Peter, and Marlene was in the same class as James, and when Remus asked Hestia to have lunch with them, somehow they had all become friends.

It was a unlikely group, James admitted that, but having Marlene, Lily and Hestia around always seemed to make their group much more alive and complete somehow, even though James had never thought they needed more members.

As he sat down on the lounge chair next to Lily, James wondered what she would do if he tried to flirt with her; would she repay or would she push him away and their group would break up? He'd seen how a little shocked she looked when he'd taken off his shirt, but maybe it was the tattoos that had caused it to her.

"I always thought you were too much of a mama's boy for that," she'd said, pointing to his chest, where a constellation was drawn.

Maybe that was just the shock, but James liked to think there was something else, and before she wanted to throw up her guts, he was thinking that Lily was returning the flirting start they were having, sitting by the pool while James gave her his seductive smile.

"Feeling better?" James looked over at her, lying on the lounger with her sunglasses on and her belly white with sunscreen.

"Yes now." Lily sighed. "Sorry I made you see me in that situation."

"Nothing." James shrugged. "I've gotten a lot worse, don't worry…" He took a deep breath, gathering his chest boldly and thanking that his mind was a little clouded by the beer. "Lily, are you going with anyone to Liz's party?"

Liz was a girl who studied with James, they were classmates in the Philosophy class, she was a Brazilian exchange student, and had said that she would have a party to celebrate Valentine's Day on the same date that was celebrated in Brazil, and that it was a party with the themed 'june party', which implied that they dressed in checkered clothes, or round and lace-filled dresses. She had also said that they should go as couples, but for singles, there would be something like a kissing chain or something, James hadn't quite understood.

From the photos she had shown, it looked interesting, and any opportunity to ask Lily out, James was taking it.

"I hadn't thought to go, until now." She turned her head toward him, and James cursed her sunglasses, preventing him from seeing those beautiful green eyes. ‘Are you asking me on a date?

"Could be if you want," He smiled, hoping it was seductive enough.

"Are you asking me on a date after you saw me throw up?" This time Lily lifted her glasses, and her green eyes glared at him, her eyebrow raised and an adorable little smile on her lips.

"I said I've been worse." James bit his cheek, a little anxiously. 'Then? Do you want to be my partner? I can wear a dress if you like, I look really cute in lace.” He winked, just to make her laugh—and she did.

"I want," Lily put her glasses back on, and lay back down. 'Just because I want to see you wearing lace and ruffles… I promise to be a good gentleman and court you.' It was he who laughed now, thinking it was alcohol that made him feel silly like that, laughing at anything she said and with all those butterflies in the stomach.

"Fine, can't wait." He grinned from ear to ear, he would probably have his face torn open if he continued like this, but he was too happy to care.

He was going on a date with Lily Evans.

Growing antsy, I check my watch for the tenth time in the last half hour. Oh good, finally! Sirius is finally out of detention! I scribble down the last bit of my paper and start to pack up my things to leave the library. Lily and Marlene peer up from their work across the table.

“Are you okay?” Marlene breaks the silence.

“Yeah, just peachy!” I press my lips together as I shove my textbook into my bag.

“Y/N, you don’t have to act like you’re okay,” Lily tries to reason with me gently. “You’re dealing with something-”

“Everything is fine, Lil!” I snap.

Lily and Marlene jumps slightly at my sudden rashness. Comprehending what I’ve just done, I take a deep breath and fill with instant regret. It’s not my friends’ fault, I shouldn’t take it out on them.

“I made my decision,” I state calmly. “Now it’s done.”

I start to rise from my seat and place my bag on my shoulder. Checking my watch again, I realize that I actually have a few extra minutes, oh well. I don’t think I can sit here in this silent library for much longer.

“Where are you going?” Marlene questions hesitantly and glances between me and Lily.

“I’m supposed to meet Sirius in the courtyard,” I rush out.

Lily’s face scrunches in confusion. “What about James?”

“What about him? See ya!” I force a smile and head toward the door.

Now I’m certain Lily and Marlene are going to have a field day with worrying about me.

Laying in the grass of the courtyard under the tree, Sirius and I just lounge around for most of the afternoon. I rest against the bench and Sirius baths under the sun. He surprised me with blackberries he stole from the kitchens on his way here. I’ve challenged him to catch them in his mouth. Even when he has the advantage of me dropping it directly above his mouth, Sirius doesn’t have the best coordination.

“No, a thousand percent! Heart is much better than The Runaways.” I agree as I drop another blackberry.

Sirius actually catches it, so i playfully applaud him. He pretends to bow, struggling to suppress his laughter. Rolling onto his side to face me, he grabs a handle full of berries from the pile on the towel beside me.

“Do you think you’d ever be in a band like that?” He asks.

I laugh, “could you see me in a rock band?”

“Yeah, sure,” he nods, dead serious.

“What?!” I nudge him on the shoulder. “Are you mad?”

“Mad about you...” He smirks cheekily, meeting my gaze with hooded eyes.

I roll my eyes at his flirtatious innuendo, pressing my lips together to hide my childish grin. I can feel my cheeks getting warm and it’s not from the heat of the sun. With a flick of my wrist, I pick up a berry from the pile and hold it up to his mouth. He glances at it and back at me, anticipating me moving it away. Hesitantly, he leans forward to take the berry in his mouth. His eyes remain locked on mine. Then, I hurry and pop the berry in my mouth with a snicker.

"Oh you're gonna get it now!" Sirius laughs.

He grabs me by the waist and rolls me over so that I'm on his lap. Relentlessly, he starts tickling me, knowing how much I can't stand it. I wiggle in his hold, but I know he's far too strong and I don't stand chance.

“Sirius stop!” I squeal.

“Sorry, can’t hear you!” He mocks playfully.

“Sirius!” I laugh nervously, trying to pry his hands away.

“Not the magic word," Sirius teases in a sing-songy tone. "But by all means keep screaming my name," he purrs.

“I don’t know it!” I plead, struggling to cease my laughter.

“Oh sure you do! Think, Gorgeous, think!” He snickers.

“Padfoot!” I blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.

“There it is!”

Sirius stops his attack and I relax beside him on the grass. My breathing slowly subsides as I pant. Rather proud of himself, Sirius watches me with a grin.

“You’re the worst!” I giggle, watching the clouds flow by as I catch my breath.

“You say that but you love me,” he winks.

I turn my head to the side and meet his gaze. "Most days," I admit quietly with a giggle.  

His face falls, "you what-”

“Y/N!” James's voice captures my attention.

I sit up to see him jogging over from the quidditch field with a smile.

“There you are, Darling! I’ve been looking for you," he greets warmly once he's closer.

Joining us, he sits on the bench beneath the tree and I crawl across the short distance to sit on the grass by him.  

“I’ve been here," I point out nonchalantly. "How was practice?”

“Decent. I’ve missed you today," he charms, rubbing his hand up and down my back.

“We saw each other this morning,” I snicker.

“Yes, but you were with Lily and Marlene. I hardly got to speak with you," he dramatically pouts like a child who lost his toy.

"That's what meals are for," I lecture.

I crisscross my arms on his leg and rest my chin on them, enjoying this beautiful afternoon. It's honestly the most perfect weather and spending it with my two favorite boys isn't too shabby either.

"I'm going to head out," Sirius announces, already to his feet.

I protest disappointedly, "but-"

"What's up mate?" James beats me to it.

Sirius shrugs, suddenly gloomy. "Nothing, just promised Remus I'd help him with something."

"Alright, see you at dinner then," James nods. "You're going to the game tonight right?"

Sirius mutters an agreement and glances down at me.

"I'll see you Y/N," he mumbles, offering me a weak smile.

I nod, "yeah, yeah most definitely!"

I don't want him to go. We were having so much fun. He turns to walk away and I mood is hindered. One minute we were having a blast, like how we were before... well before everything. Now, I'm just confused.

“Hey," James pulls my focus away from Sirius. "Excited for Hogsmeade next weekend?"

I hum, nodding my head enthusiastically. "It'll be a nice change of pace."

"I had an idea! After the game tonight, let’s go to the Astronomy Tower,” he suggests enthusiastically.

I shake my head, biting my lip to hide my grin. This boy is going to get me in trouble without a doubt.

"But what if we get caught?" I inquire wisely.

“I’ll bring my invisibility cloak,” he concludes without a care in the world.

I hum, thinking it over. If we do end up getting caught, that's my third detention this year. James better bring his cloak if I do agree to it.

“I’ll think about it.” I comply, not fully, but enough to satisfy the boy.

"Perfect," he leans down and plants a kiss to the top of my head.

I do another shot of firewhiskey with Marlene and it hits me instantly, putting me over the edge. Gryffindor won today against Hufflepuff, so everyone's celebrating in the Common Room. The girls and I decided earlier today to dress for the occasion. I bought a new red leather skirt over the summer when Marlene came to visit me. I've yet to wear it and Marlene insisted I pair it with her yellow Gryffindor t-shirt she cut to a crop top.

James bloody brilliant on the field today. Then, Sirius kept making me laugh through the whole game, making sly comments the entire time. I thought Remus was going to bonk him on the head by the end.

Marlene tugs on my sleeve. "Let's dance!"

"And where shall we dance?" I stumble slightly, in my defense the room is a little spinny.

Marlene twirls her head, searching for a proper place.

"The study table!" I announce, right as the idea pops into my head.

"Excellent!" Marlene clasps her hands together and starts dragging me through the packed space.

She weaves between bodies, warning people to move. I laugh, she is by far the most wild girl I have ever had the pleasure of befriending.

"Oh well hello there!"

Someone new grabs my wrist that's free from Marlene and I'm yanked away from her. I land into someone's chest and I'm met with a familiar pair of glasses. He brings his hands around my waist, gliding over my exposed skin between the hem of my skirt and crop top.

"Hello to you too, Potter," I greet, draping my arms over his shoulders.

"And where have you been?" He purrs, leaning in to kiss me I suspect. 

Marlene pops up next to us. "Doing shots with me! Now, if you don't mind-" she takes my arm again "-Y/N here promised me we'd dance!"

"By all means," James hands me over. "I'll find you later," he assures me.

I offer him a wink right as Marlene tugs me away. She locks arms with me as she escorts me over to the table.

"Potter is mushy-gushy into you!" She shouts in my ear over the music.

"He's just a flirt!" I dismiss, not giving it a second thought.

"You're blind!" She teases.

Some Goddamn Curtains

When I was in college, I kept getting the compliment, “Wow, your room is really nice for a guy.”  I never understood what that meant for the longest time.  Then I actually paid attention to how most guys kept their dorm room. I once waited for a guy to get ready to head down to an event. I realized that I had never actually stepped foot in his room, much less even glanced inside of it. I liked all my college roommates but the most untidiest one was in sophomore year. He left his toothbrush lying around in the open in a sock drawer, and it would end up somewhere else each night. The curtains thing came up in high school when I hung out at the senior lounge. The senior lounge was this bare room that looked like it was meant for old people to sit and play bingo. It was boring and dull and I hated it. It felt more lke a prison cafeteria really, with some worn out couches. A lot of us would squint and move closer or lean forward.  I then said, “This room needs some curtains.”

And he looked at me and scoffed, and all the other guys did the same - they gave me this funny sideways glance and scoffed. I asked what the problem was, but they mostly shook their heads in disbelief. I was frankly annoyed by their response. So I said, louder, “This room needs some goddamn curtains”, because I thought it was perfectly fucking reasonable that a person would logically do something about the fucking glare from the fucking sun. Maybe they liked blinds better. Who knows? But it took me ages to fully realize two things:  1. It’s not socially acceptable for boys to be interested in style - whether it be about living spaces or clothes. I was fiercely made fun of for the clothes I wore as a kid throughout young adult life. I hated all kinds of t-shirts. I think growing up thin and gangly made me too self-aware of my arms. But I never specifically wanted to wear anything that had a band name or a company logo or even my favorite video game or movie. I would feel like a walking advertisement, and that would piss me off. I often liked ties, long-sleeved shirts, and sweaters. I never left the house in sweatpants or pajamas. I always had to comb my hair and put on a good shirt. Sweatpants were when you worked out or worked around the house fixing things.  I grew up in Catholic school, so we had uniforms. On dress down days, my classmates would come up to me and say, “Eddie, you were supposed to dress DOWN, not up” or “I can’t believe you’re wearing that on a dress down day!”.  I didn’t have a problem with people dressing how they dressed. Sure I was never into the goth thing, but I didn’t want to judge. I just wanted to dress how I wanted to dress. And maybe I was influenced in some way by how my parents dressed me up, and maybe other times I did feel embarrassed, but I knew that at the end of the day I would wear what felt most comfortable to me. Sometimes my mom would give me a sweater that was a tad too bland, so I went to the bathroom once I got to school and took it off. I would like the polo but untucked it and unbuttoned the top buttons. Half-and-half. Right idea, but lemme wear it like this instead. College was really when I started to develop my everyday style, my “main outfit”, like a video game character. I always wore some untucked button-down shirt with a tie, jeans, and sneakers. I liked it. It was this weird blend of dressing up and dressing down. People my age thought I was overdressed but my parents and people over 50 complained that I was underdressed. It was great! It feels so special to piss off both sides! My parents still remember the time I got an award at college and I went up the stage wearing that getup. You look at the picture and see the students standing side-by-side in nice dresses and dockers, and then there’s me wearing jeans and sneakers with a shirt and tie.  There always seemed to be this false dichotomy for how men should look and be - either the dapper “metrosexual” man who was slightly effeminate or the rough-and-tumble strong man who didn’t need to use an umbrella when it rained and never cared to fix his hair because that’s some “gay shit” for silly city folk. That false dichotomy is always played out in media. There’s a million buddy cop movies about the book-smart guy who is suave and sophisticated teaming up with the street-smart guy who is all muscle and manly and goes for the more practical route. Yin and Yang. Hot and cold. Good cop and bad cop. Lucky and Wild. Tango and Cash. But growing up I thought, “Why not both?” I loved watching James Bond as much as I loved watching Indiana Jones. Why couldn’t I be both if I really wanted to? It fit me best to play both roles. I AM GOING TO MIX THESE TWO THINGS AND YOU CAN’T FUCKING STOP ME! I WILL BE BOTH BOOK-SMART AND STREET-SMART. I KNOW THE QUADRATIC EQUATION AND HOW TO CON SOMEONE. THE ULTIMATE LIFEFORM.  The fucking worst though is being an adult now and hearing women wish they knew a guy who “dressed properly”, and men complimenting my clothes saying I look sharp.

Fuck all of you, honestly. 2. Young people are afraid to admit they like things that adults like. I grew up with extended family members living in cozy homes. I liked to admire their grandfather clocks, their decanters, their entertainment center, their offices and their chairs. I liked to wander around their houses during the holidays and poke my nose into their closets and admire old things. Maybe it’s something that an only-child might relate to the most. I wasn’t required or asked to be upstairs to attend a younger or older sibling. The adults just did their own thing and so I wandered off. Ikea always tickled my fancy as a kid. I would wander through the model rooms of offices and bedrooms and bathrooms, and I found whatever felt coziest to me and pretended that I was home. Better yet, I sometimes daydreamed that the entire Ikea facility was my home. How about that? Tired of sleeping on the bunk bed? Go to the next room to the big bed. I feel like cooking in that kitchen today, not this one. Some days I’ll feel more serious and work in the wooden office desk and other days I’ll feel silly and be in the kids room. I’ll take the whole building, please. This is where I live now. Swedish meatballs for dinner and creamy European chocolate bars for dessert every day. Young people fear being old and facing responsibilities. That doesn’t mean you liking these things makes you older. Taste and style is part of who you are, and there’s no shame if you have an interest in some bath mats or a nice decanter when you’re 20 or 17.

When I lived in my single dorm back in senior year of college, I realized that I was truly living alone for the first time. It brought some sanity to me that I didn’t know I needed. I was able to organize things how I saw fit, and hosted parties whenever I wanted. If I felt like something needed adjusting, I didn’t need to ask anybody’s permission. I really started exploring my sense of style and taste. As I grew up, I developed really specific tastes about where I would live: 1. Everything has to make sense. The placement of shelves, TVs, desks, dressers, paintings, pictures, all have to feel like they are easily viewed and accessible without needing to awkwardly turn to face them or reach them.  2. Symmetry is not always necessary but still good to fall back on when you don’t know what to do. 3. I never liked to sit with my back to the window(s) or the door. I always needed to see who or what was going to approach me or look at me.  4. TVs should never go on top of fireplaces.  5. Always have some kind of drawing room for guests to wait.  6. Never put your keys or sensitive documents in the foyer, drawing room, or wherever else strangers can easily find them the minute they walk into the house.  7. Open concept is pretentious.  8. It is far easier to cook if you have an island in the kitchen.  9. McMansions are the bane of style. Fake balconies, fake shutters, brick facades - everything about them is evil.  10. Get some goddamn curtains.

Chapter Fifteen (Part Two)

“Let me just bring up your booking here, one moment please.”

The lobby of The Langham was an ocean of grey and blue. The sun was shining brightly outside, the hottest day of the year so far, and it reflected in every surface of the space and accompanying bar. It was sparse on the usual detailing, instead preferring a minimalist approach; the check-in desk consisted of a mere iPad and one lily artfully growing from a tall, geometrical glass vase. Random art hung from all sides. One looked vaguely like a donkey, Sarah was sure. There was also what she thought was an ash tray balanced on a pillar to the left of where she was standing but she didn’t dare to investigate it any closer in case it cost the price of a small car.

It had the same over-perfumed odour as the fragrance section of a Macy’s. The tiled floor look so clean and fresh you could be forgiven for thinking it had only just been laid that very morning. Sarah felt a pang of guilt walking in wearing her scuffed Converse. She always felt so out of place in places like this. It was the kind of place she would run a mile from if she had the choice but Greg had an “in” with the manager and now here she was. 

“So that will be four nights in our Executive Suite with Central Park view. You also have the bar allowance of $150 per night. You just need to take the elevator up to the 32nd floor and it’s the second door on your left. Would you like a hand with your bags, madam?” She motioned for the concierge to come over but held her hand up when she spied the puzzled look on Sarah’s face.

“I’m really sorry but I think there’s been some kind of mistake. I didn’t book a suite, just a standard double and I don’t think I pre-paid for any bar allowance. I didn’t even know I could do that to be honest.” Sarah chuckled awkwardly in an attempt to diffuse the tension but it fell on deaf ears. She handed the key card back to the lady, unsure of what else to suggest.

The lady showed practically no emotion at the possible mistake and simply took another look at her records before confirming that she was in fact correct with the initial room choice. “It’s definitely your suite, and...everything is paid for in advance. Could it have been made on your behalf? It looks like it was upgraded yesterday afternoon.”

Sarah wasn’t sure if she was asking her a question or telling her. She couldn’t believe she wasn’t biting her hand off but she hoped she hadn’t made some kind of horrific error her bank wouldn’t forgive her for. She could barely afford the double room she’d booked as it was and she’s sure the college wouldn’t have upgraded her without letting her know in advance. It made zero sense. They couldn’t have that kind of money going spare, putting students up in posh suites. She had no clue what could have happened.

Unless...Chris?

No, it wouldn’t be. He was less than pleased to hear she’d be away as it was. Except...well, who else? Sarah rolled her eyes a little too obviously before accepting the key card back. “That’s OK. I think I know what’s happened. It’s only the one bag. I can manage it.”

The lady nodded her thanks and, smiling politely, pointed her back towards the elevators. Sarah couldn’t move away from her fast enough.

Arriving at her floor, Sarah emerged from the lift expecting someone to come running up to her to confirm that they had in fact made a horrendous mistake. She slipped the key card into her door before pushing her way in to find her new home for the week.

The bedroom was large, uncomfortable so, with the bed positioned just off the middle in the room. Sarah figured the designer for a psychopath. It was big but not as empty as the lobby would have had her believe. In fact, it seemed reassuringly cosy despite the windows, so many windows stretching around the suite. There was a soft blue curved sofa opposite a screen that she’d seen smaller versions of in a cinema. Cushions fucking everywhere and fluffy white slippers she’d probably never take off again.

Everything seemed to be controlled from an iPad set in a stand by the bedroom door; the lights, the curtains, the air freshener, some background music for ambiance if she wanted. The windows tinted darker to block out the sunlight. Even the $1300 coffee machine was remote controlled; she had recognised it from the last edition of Home & Country Jocelyn had mailed to her, the exact one Shanna had been dropping hints about to Chris as a potential Christmas present.

The lounge offered her the clearest view of Central Park and with the light at this time in the afternoon, it was beyond stunning. She snapped a picture and considered texting it to Shanna but thought better of drawing attention to where she was staying. There was no way she could pass this off as a standard room even with her best efforts.

It was almost a shame to waste all of this on just herself. This room deserved romance, she thought.

Around the same time, Chris was on his third beer of the afternoon and lounging on his sofa. He had a new script in one hand, one he wasn’t particularly keen on but offered to read as a favour for a friend. He was so relaxed now that he had to re-read the last ten or so pages simply because it wasn’t landing. The whole room was lit softly by the sun outside. It had gone 4 o’clock when his phone rang disturbing the peace.

“Bernette! How was the journey?” he smiled into the phone as soon as he saw who it was.

“The bathtub is the size of my entire bathroom.” She announced, not giving him room to breathe. She heard him laugh heartily at the end of the line and could picture him looking smug and proud of himself, the dick. “I could have an orgy with the Patriots and still have room left.”

She didn’t want to argue with him. She was tired and extremely grateful for the kind gesture. She’d be able to enjoy the place and her time in the City more if she could firmly separate her work from any space in which she could chill out. It wasn’t like she was going to be raving all night nor have much chance to see places at this rate, so more space was probably a good thing. She hadn’t had an unbroken night’s sleep in...she couldn’t even remember when.

“Thank you, Chris.” she spoke softly after a brief pause.

“You’re welcome.”

She put her phone down on the bedside table and set about removing her clothes from her suitcase. Well, “clothes” in the loose sense. What she’d packed was basically gym gear, sweat pants, t-shirts, nothing remotely attractive, and a simple paid of black trousers for the exam day itself. Who was going to see her anyway? Shanna had thrown a jumper in the mix without her realising, dismayed at her insistence that she was not going out to bars to hook up with someone.

She was soon feeling the push and pull of the day and had planned on spending at least a couple of hours studying that evening, so she had a clean-up and threw on the first set of sweatpants that fell out of the closet. She tied her hair up and out of her face, pulled out her notepad and switched her Macbook on. The TV was showing some repeat of a gameshow with the sound on low, more for background company than anything else, and she finally figured out how to get the coffee machine working thanks to a small tome buried inside a drawer underneath the coffee table.

Awkward silence fell between them as they stared at each other unsure of what to do next. Finally picking up on the fact he remained in the hallway, a backpack thrown over his shoulder, she moved out of the way and he entered the suite. Relieved, he placed his bag down and turned to see her close the door behind him. He looked mildly embarrassed and she was all too aware she wasn’t welcoming but it was getting late and her eyes had started to hurt a little as she rubbed at them with the back of her hand.

“Fuck, that’s a long couch.” he announced, taking his black suede jacket off and placing it over the armrest nearest to him. He glanced over and saw papers strewn over the coffee table, her laptop light blaring brightly and looked back to her. She was working hard and he had ruined it.

He nodded gratefully and looked so adorable that any annoyance she might have felt finally dissipated. “How about I give you a hug and then leave you to it? I need a shower and I can amuse myself in there for a little while. I don’t know why I just said that.”

Sarah laughed again and a little more relief moved through him. He wasn’t sure why he was feeling so nervous when he had been so confident of his decisions in the car all the way here. He’d rehearsed his lines and imagined her big smile when seeing behind the door. He had wanted to stop off and buy flowers but he was so eager to see her, he’d just kept driving. No daydream could live up to the reality of seeing her face up close.

He watched her from the bathroom doorway. She was cross-legged on the bed, studying the thickest textbook he’d ever seen with colour-coded notecards laid out across the duvet. He had earlier glimpsed a page over her shoulder but decided against pursuing medicine as a new career when he was faced with photographs of god knows what. He tried to remove the images from his mind by drinking another beer and thinking of Sarah in her scrubs. That tended to work well for him these days.

She looked so cute sat on the bed, her reading glasses perched on the end of her nose. He wanted to come up with a joke, calm the tension a little that had grown between them in the meantime, but she looked pretty hot. More hot than usual and it was distracting. Like a sexy Librarian and for the second time this month he discovered something else he was into.

One pen was stuck behind her ear but she’d forgotten she’d put it there and was now using a different one. There’d be some time, he reasoned, and right not it was just was exhilarating to think of her being here alongside him knowing it would be just the two of them for a little while.

He perched on the end of the bed in front of her. She barely moved, barely seemed to notice him. He took one of her blank notecards and carefully placed it on the open page so as not to lose her place. She leaned back slightly, allowing him to gather up the papers and place them in a pile on the floor besides the bed before turning back to lean in towards her, one arm stretching out across her legs. She took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes again. She wanted peace and quiet and he decided to rock up just because he could. He sighed to himself. He was such a dick sometimes.

“Do you mind me being here?” he asked her, fully resigning himself to leaving if she now asked him to as hard as that might be. He’d got so caught up in his idea of surprising her that he hadn’t fully registered just how important these exams were or how well she wanted to do. Passing them wasn’t an option for Sarah; she wanted to knock it out of the park. She wanted to do better for herself and the more he got to know her like this, the more it became his favourite thing about her. And he related. He related perfectly. He knew exactly what that was like. “Cos I can go if you need me to.”

“Chris, I’ve said it’s fine. It’s nice that you’re here. I would just hate you feeling bored if all I’m doing is studying all the time.” She nervously twirled the pen between her fingers while taking in how amazing he looked following a shower, a little steam rising off his skin.

“I won’t get bored.” he assured her. “It’ll be nice hanging out with you. Just the two of us.”

He plucked the pen from behind her ears and she rolled her eyes realising the mistake she’d made. He tucked strands of hair back and leaned in placing a quick, soft kiss to her lips. He smelled like her coconut shampoo and she just now understood how truly spontaneous his trip had been.

“Listen, there’s another reason why I’m here. There’s something I need to talk to you about and I couldn’t wait until you got home.” he stroked her arm gently, looking down into her lap. “It’s been going around in my head and I’m not entirely sure what to say about it to be honest, but...it looks like Jenny’s done an interview with a magazine. A full thing with a photoshoot and stuff and it looks like I might be involved.” He closed his eyes for a second before correcting himself. “Not might actually, it’s pretty much definite that I’m in there for a large portion of it.”

“OK.” Sarah nodded. He for sure seemed weary of the whole thing and she felt for him.

“I just, I know she can be pretty unfiltered at the best of times, so-”

“-but she won’t have said anything negative, right?”

“No, no, not negative. I’m not worried about that exactly. It’s just that...” He was struggling to find the words. “I just didn’t want you to get the wrong idea about us, about me and her. I expect she’ll have this hyper-romanticised view of things and I guess I didn’t want you thinking it was some great love affair which is what I think she’ll spin it as.” He couldn’t quite meet her eye while he was talking. “I’m not proud of myself or of what I said or did at the time but I was low and she was there and it was...easy, I guess.”

He immediately regretted his choice of words. As much as he wanted Sarah to understand, he didn’t want Sarah to think he was dismissive of his relationships in this way. “Matt’s figuring out some damage control with them. Hopefully, it’ll go away as quickly as it comes.”

“You think he’ll be able to clear it up?”

Chris nodded. Matt was a formidable guy and he was assured things would look and read much better by the time it went to print. He placed his hand on her thigh and it was only now she registered just how close he was to surrounding her.  “I don’t wear my heart on my sleeve all too often but when I do, they know about it. I want to make them aware of exactly how I feel about them and I didn’t do that with her.” He dipped his head to catch her eye line. “So, when I do something for someone, it means something, y’know?”

“Yeh, of course. You’re a good guy, Chris. Everyone knows that.” She took his hand and lightly interlocked their fingers together.

“I guess I just didn’t want you worrying about her ‘cos there’s absolutely nothing there for me. Never had been.”

“You don’t need to explain this to me, I’m not going to hold anything against you.” she stroked his chin with her thumb and felt him relax into her hand. He glanced down at the mess he’d made on the floor and started picking a few things back up.

“How much left do you have to do tonight?” he whispered as his lips closed upon hers for a fleeting moment.

“I could do with finishing some notes but...half an hour, maybe?”

“I’ll hold you to that.” he kissed her again and got up from the bed, lifting her books back on top. “Just come get me when you’re done, yeh?”

Finishing up in the bathroom, Sarah switched off the light and moved towards the bed. She kneeled alongside Chris who was lying flat out, naked except for the duvet bunched across legs, reading what she assumed was the hotel magazine only to find upon closer inspection that it was in fact one of her medical journals. She giggled as she grabbed the moisturiser from the bedside table and began rubbing a small amount up and down her arms, regarding him as his nose creased up in apparent disgust at something he’d just read. 

“Did you know the body has ten times more microorganisms living in it than actual human cells?! That’s bacteria, Sarah. Living, gross bacteria. All over us.” he looked at her, shock and horror crossing his fine, perfect features. She wasn’t sure whether to pat him on the head or laugh.

“It’s mostly good bacteria, though. Only, like, 1% of it is bad for us.”

“And when exactly were you going to tell me about this?!”

She creased up laughing and flopped on to her side next to him. “It’s all information that’s out there for the world to see. Remind me not to tell you about eyelashes.”

“What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever removed from somebody’s ass?” he asked.

“What? Why is that always a question people want an answer to?”

“I don’t know. It’s just weird. Humans are weird.” he muttered, turning back to the pages in front of him. She was glad he had chosen one without pictures. That was the last thing she wanted to see before falling asleep.

“So, have you learned something new?” she asked, curling her legs under the duvet.

“I have. I think you should test me and if I get a question wrong, you can do whatever you like to me. Deal?” he asked, smirking. She shyly smiled and he tossed the book onto the floor. “Hi.”

“Hi.” She repeated. She watched as his eyes slowly travelled down her body. It was unreasonable how much he managed to disarm her with only a look.

His hand reached out to gently caress the side of her thigh, nudging the duvet slightly down before moving back up to her hip, a ticklish area he’d picked up on the last time they were together. Not that Chris ever pushed her, mind. He’d been nothing but understanding and respectful and she was grateful for that but also growing concerned he was perhaps a little...bored. Why else would he drive over state lines to see her. None of this was normal and the more time went by, the more she became fretful of what they were doing.

“What are you thinking about?” he kissed her shoulder. “Is it dirty? If it’s dirty, I wanna know about it.”

Sarah smiled and placed her hand on the side of his face, running her fingers gently over his beard. He’d thoroughly given up shaving but she liked how soft it still felt under her finger tips and judging by the breath he released as he closed his eyes, so did he, relaxing into her hand. She was hoping he’d take charge so she could put off talking to him a little longer but instead, he refrained from pushing them any further and leaned back a little, looking into her eyes. “Talk to me.”

She could feel his hand move slowly and deliberately up her arm until he reached the back of her neck, his fingers playing with the loose strands of hair that had fallen from her messy bun. There was no getting away from this.

“You know you can tell me anything, right? It’s OK for you to tell me what you want.” She could feel his breath on her skin, his voice low and rough. It started as a summer fling. Steve and Billy attended the same college and, honestly, if Steve had seen Billy around campus, he would’ve spat in his face. Not to be rude or anything, but Steve thought that Billy looked like a grade-A jackass and wasn’t really afraid of saying it, either. But Steve hadn’t seen Billy around campus—he'd seen him at the beach, all miles of sun kissed skin and a grin that showed off too-sharp incisors that made Steve’s mouth water.

He had seen him, specifically, at a beach party, and his usual faculties had been mostly obscured by alcohol at that point, so he’d approached Billy. That had led to a handjob under a blanket, staring up at the stars like they were a miracle, Billy’s voice low in Steve’s ear, and Steve’s world flipped upside down.

And after that? Steve pulled on a shirt and stepped out on to the balcony, next to Billy. Billy turned his head, eyes still faintly bloodshot and hair an utter mess. He smiled.

“Morning, pretty boy.”

Steve smirked. “Barely, lazy bones.”

Billy scoffed. “Oh, like you’re any better.”

“Uh, yeah, I am. I’m wearing a shirt.” Steve gestured to his polo-clad torso.

Billy eyed the shirt, lips turning down. “Going somewhere, princess?”

Steve nodded. “Yup. Got a thing with my dad at one.”

Billy nodded. “I’ll be out of here by then, I guess.”

Steve frowned. “No, I’m leaving now. I have to see Isaac before I head over to the country club.”

“Isaac?” Billy sneered. “Seriously? Why are you still talking to that guy?”

Steve rolled his eyes. “Because I want to, asshole.”

“He’s a bratty twink who has more interest in your wallet than your dick, Steve.”

Steve stiffened. “He’s a friend.”

“A friend?” Billy scoffed. “Oh, so that’s what we’re calling it now? So what, am I your ‘friend’ now, too?”

Steve scowled, turning so he faced Billy head on. “Well, you’re not anything more, Billy. We agreed, at the start of this, that this was purely friends-with-benefits. You know what word that name has? That’s right—friends. So I don’t know what you’re getting so worked up about.”

“Oh, that’s rich,” Billy sneered. “Like this is still friends-with-benefits, Steve. You know as well as I do that it’s more than that and the only reason you don’t want to acknowledge it is because your daddy would never accept you dating a scholarship student.”

Steve reared back. “What does that mean?”

“It means that your dad is a full-on douchebag who is preventing you from being anything other than an airhead trust-fund kid and you know it.” Billy spat, face twisted and body tense.

Something oily and gross twisted in Steve’s stomach. “That’s not true. I’m not an airhead.”

Billy rolled his eyes. “I’m starting to think you’re nothing but an airhead, Stevie-boy.”

Steve flinched, hurt spearing through him at the nickname. Tommy had called him that, and then ripped out Steve’s heart when he’d ditched him for Carol. Billy knew Steve hated that nickname, and yet he used it anyway.

Billy stormed back inside, seizing his bag while shrugging on the crop-top he’d worn the night before, and then he was out the door. Steve was left staring at the empty living room of his apartment, feeling like he was going to cry.

He left soon after for Isaac’s, pulling up to the cramped apartment in downtown LA at 11:45 sharp. They were planning on getting lunch, but Steve wondered if Isaac was down to cancel and instead stay in. Maybe Steve could even talk Isaac into a blowjob. He needed to relax.

Steve pulled up at the country club at 1:30, several new hickies on his neck and his hair mussed. He slipped into the private meeting room filled with his father’s business advisors and sat down, grinning at his father’s face, which looked like he’d eaten a whole lemon.

At an opportune break during the lunch, Steve’s father pulled him aside.

“What are you doing, Steven?” He snarled, stiff and harsh.

Steve flinched. “I’m having lunch, Dad.”

“Lunch? You call waltzing in 30 minutes late to a very important meeting ‘having lunch’? No. What you’re doing is disgracing me and your mother. You come in here with those—bruises—on your neck and act like you’re being professional. You’re not. You’re a spoiled little child who needs to learn responsibility.”

Steve opened his mouth, “I - I’m sorry, Dad. I do know what responsibility is, I promise. It won’t happen again, I - ”

“No, it won’t.” Steve’s father cut him off. “Go home, Steven. We’ll talk later.”

Steve drew back, feeling tears pricking his eyes. He’d promised himself that he wouldn’t cry because of his father. No—he’d promised Billy, had sworn on his own right hand one night when he’d gotten too drunk and broken down about what an asshole his father was. Billy had made sympathetic noises, humming quietly while Steve curled up in his lap, tears trailing down his cheeks and hands clutched in Billy’s shirt. Billy had made him swear that Steve wouldn’t let his father’s condescending speeches get to him ever again. That he’d call Billy and they’d shoot the shit until Steve felt a little less like a child and more like himself—a successful business major who was at the top of his class.

But Billy was mad at him. And when Billy was mad, he could be cruel, and Steve didn’t think he could take anymore cruelty. He climbed back into his car, phone in hand, and called Robin.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the dingus himself.”

Steve sniffed. “Hey, Rob. Could I come over?”

He could hear Robin’s frown down the line. “Of course. What’s wrong, Steve? You sound sad.”

Steve nodded, then remembered she couldn’t see him. “I had a lunch with my dad. It didn’t go well.”

Robin made a sympathetic noise. “I’ll have the margaritas ready.”

Steve smiled. “Love you, Rob.”

She hummed a “Love you,” back, and hung up. Steve drove over to her place and parked down the street. Robin and her girlfriend, Heather, had a small apartment in Burbank, and Steve while he didn’t live anywhere near Burbank, he was over there a lot.

He walked into Robin’s apartment and flopped on her couch, closing his eyes and feeling his body sink into the couch. Robin came into the room, a margarita in each hand, and offered him one.

He cracked an eye and took it from her.

“So, what happened?” She asked, sitting beside him.

Steve lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “I went over to Isaac’s beforehand and was late. He didn’t like that all that much.”

Robin frowned. “You’re still talking to Isaac?”

“Yeah? Why wouldn’t I be?”

Robin raised her eyebrows. “Because you’re involved with Billy, and I got the sense that it was getting pretty serious.”

Steve opened his mouth, remembering Billy’s face when Steve had told him he was going over to Isaac’s. It had been stricken, like he’d been slapped. “We’re just friends-with-benefits, Rob.”

Robin snorted.

“What does that mean?” Steve asked, feeling attacked.

“It means, dingus, that your whole friends-with-benefits arrangement went out the window a long time ago. I mean, Billy asked you out to a real restaurant, Steve. That counts as a date.”

“No, it doesn’t!” Steve protested. “We were going to go to a beach party after. Billy just wanted to get some food in me beforehand because he knows I get way too drunk way too fast if I don’t eat.”

Robin raised an eyebrow. “Exactly. Since when does Billy keep track of people’s eating habits if he doesn’t care about them, Steve?”

Steve rolled his eyes. “I’m just not any fun if I’m blackout drunk, Robin. You know this just as well as he does.”

Robin was unimpressed. “Or maybe he’s just concerned for your well-being, Steve.”

Steve shook his head. “That’s not—Billy.”

And it wasn’t. Robin didn’t know Billy, not like Steve did. She didn’t know just how much effort Billy put into being emotionally distanced from just about everything. Steve would know if that changed, right?

“Uh huh, sure,” Robin said, sinking further down into the couch.

Steve stewed in her words for the rest of his visit. He returned to his apartment at around five, feeling worn out and tired. It was always like this when he fought with his father, but today had the additional strain of the fight with Billy, and now Steve felt like sleeping for a hundred years. It didn’t help that he was slightly drunk off the margaritas he’d had with Robin and Heather.

He thought back to their conversation. How Robin had acted like it was obvious that Steve and Billy were together, like together together, and everyone knew it but Steve. Was that true? Did Billy want to date, and Steve had just been an oblivious prick the whole time?

Steve remembered Billy’s words from that morning. His question, said in a voice that sounded so obvious.

Why are you still talking to that guy? Like Steve should be able to see from a mile away why Billy was asking that question.

Why was Steve still talking Isaac? Billy had been right—Isaac was more interested in the money than the sex, and frankly, he was boring to be around. He didn’t have much of a personality—not like Billy, who burned with one, like a whole forest fire contained to one body. The more Steve thought about it, the less talking to Isaac seemed like a good idea.

After all, Steve had started talking to him because he’d been a good substitute for attention when Billy was angry. He’d kept Isaac on the side because there were sometimes when Steve felt a pit of loneliness yawning open inside of him and he’d needed someone to take the edge off. That had originally been Billy’s purpose, but then they’d become something different, something more, and—

Shit. Robin was right.

Steve scrambled up from his couch and runs out the door, barely grabbing his keys and phone on the way out. He drove over to Billy’s place like a madman, parking out front and sprinting up the stairs to the second level. He pounded on Billy’s door.

Billy answered after the third bout of knocking, furious and disheveled. When he saw Steve, he leaned against the door frame, eyes sparked. “Well, well.”

Steve didn’t wait for him to say anything else. He just pushed forward and kissed Billy, hands frantic and lips searching. Billy froze for a moment, before melting into the kiss, body pressing forward and hands going to Steve’s waist. He opened his mouth, lazily pushing in and licking luxuriously. Steve nipped lightly at his lip and let his tongue trace Billy’s incisor before gently pulling away. Billy blinked like a cat under the sun, eyes going hazy and soft.

“What was that for, pretty boy?”

Steve let his eyes trace over Billy’s face before murmuring, “I’m sorry.”

Billy raised an eyebrow. “Sorry for what?”

“For being so oblivious? And for leading you on while still hooking up with someone else. It was cruel and rude and I shouldn’t have done it.”

Billy sucked in a breath, eyes wide and searching.

Steve bit his lip, mouth open but no other words coming out. Billy’s broad hands tightened at his waist and hauled him into the apartment, pressing him against the wall as the door clicked shut. He kissed Steve again, hot and hard, and drew back. “Do you really mean that, pretty boy?”

Steve nodded frantically. “Yes, Billy, yes. I do.”

Billy grinned and kissed him again.

The sun is high in the sky. A few clouds drift by, wispy in appearance. As if an artist had taken a paintbrush and lightly blended them into the blue of the atmosphere. Janus sits amongst a collection of philosophy books, full of sticky notes and highlighter. His computer lies open in his lap, an empty word document stares out from the screen, mocking the student. Taunting him with the blinking of the text cursor, as more and more minutes pass without anything new to add to the page.

Janus has plenty to say on society. On morals he could rant for hours. Gender roles, he might as well clear his schedule for the day. But, the philosophy of love? He just couldn’t bring himself to care. 

Marriage is just a made up cultural obligation that society forces everyone to care about. Oh, these people love each other! Let’s spend all of our money on an unnecessary ceremony that will force the couple to stay together or face tons of debt to undo. And that’s just marriage. Romance in general is completely overrated, overpraised, and overdone. 

Janus sighs, shifting his capelet on his shoulders in agitation. With spring slowly turning to summer, his signature outfit was beginning to grow uncomfortable in the heat. But did Janus care? Absolutely not. Beauty was pain and he loves his bowler hat and capelet more than society loves its billionaires. 

He stares out across the campus lawn, scowling. The warm weather not only threatens his comfort but it has attracted hordes of students, crowding together to distract people like him that actually have papers to write. Warm weather is just awful. Truly horrid. Nothing good about it. He thinks to himself, watching a nearby group of students push and prod each other, their laughter loud and obnoxious. And to his left, another student, similarly dressed in dark clothing lounges beneath a tree. He spies Janus watching him and gesturing to the loud group rolls his eyes in annoyance. Janus smiles back, nodding in agreement. The purple clad student smirks. Flipping to a new page in his notebook. He begins sketching, quick and messily he runs his pen across the lined paper. Drawing hurriedly, and sneaking glances at the group before them. Catching Janus’s eye once done, he grins deviously. Flipping the notebook over, the student dramatically reveals a rather rough sketch of the three being attacked by a giant snake. Their shocked and terrified expressions caused the philosophy major to burst out into a deep and ruckus laughter. Booming out through the area, it shocks the offending group into silence. They turn around seeking the source of the sound. “What the fudge, you laugh like a Disney villain.” The one wearing a puka necklace calls out.

Janus stifles his chuckles, as the three make their way over to his position. “What are you even laughing at? Did your imaginary friend tell a joke?” A guy in a baseball cap, who thinks himself clever, speaks with bravado.

His friend with the sunglasses continues. “Are you seriously wearing a cape right now? What are you, some kind of nutcase?”

“A cape, I have no idea what you could possibly be referring to? I’m wearing a perfectly boring and unoriginal outfit just like you three fashionistas?” Janus speaks, sarcasm dripping with each word, his eyes glinting with mischief.

“Did he just insult us?” Baseball cap questions. Genuinely looking confused. Janus can’t help but chuckle at the poor fellow.

“Oh, of course not. It was a compliment. I love it when people think wearing jeans and a t-shirt makes them an individual. You three must be so brave. I applaud you.” He slowly claps his hands, emphasizing each word. ”Good job on being so unique.”

Baseball Cap grabs the front of Janus’s jacket, lifting him up to a standing position. The brute leans in closely, his breath stinking of onions. He whispers menacingly. “You think you’re smarter than us? You think you’re better than us? You're wearing a frickin’ Halloween costume in April. You’re a freak.”

“Takes a freak to know a freak.” Janus breaks in. The brute throws him to the ground. He lands on his computer, a loud crack filling the air as the screen digs into his back. He winces painfully.

“HEY!” A voice, rough and angry, yells over the commotion. Janus rolls his head to the side, seeking the source of the shout. The darkly clad student is marching over, his fists are lowered to his side, his face dark, and his features pinched in rage. “GET AWAY FROM HIM!” His voice booms, venom dripping from his words as he shoves his way through the group, trying to reach Janus. 

Puka necklace grabs the hood of his jacket. Yanking him back into the center of their crew. Sunglasses grasp the student’s chin, “Well, well, well, What do we have here? Does the freak have a friend?”

The student glares back daggers, opens his mouth, and seizes Sunglasses’s hand between his teeth. He bites down hard, eliciting a scream of pain. Puka Necklace yanks him away from Sunglasses, while Baseball Cap gives him a right-hook to the check. The student collapses to the ground. Sunglasses kicks him in the ribs, clutching onto his bleeding hand. He lets loose a string of curse words. Kicking out again at the already down student, before stomping off. His buddies follow, angrily yelling and gesturing maddeningly.

With them gone, Janus rushes to the fallen student. The injured man lies on the ground, curled into a fetal position. His arms wrapping around him in comfort and protection. Janus kneels beside his fellow student. 

“Hey, hey don’t worry. You’re okay.” He whispers assurances as his gloved hand rests on the boy’s shoulder.

The student weakly shoves his hand away. “Leave me alone.” He snarls, trying his best to rise. He manages to crouch onto his knees. His palms pressed into the fertile green grass of the campus lawn. He bends his fingers, digging his nails into the soil, breathing heavily from his mouth. A drop of blood is smeared across his lower lip. “I’ve got this.” The student sighs.

Janus appraises the stubborn student. “Yeah. I can see that.” He shakes his head in exasperation. The philosophy major sits there in silence, his chin resting in his hand as he watches the much too proud student attempt to stand. The purple clad man clutches his ribs as he brings his legs up beneath him. Trying to shift onto his feet, only to wobble and fall to his side. 

“Ugh, everything hurts.” He groans.

“Oh really? Because I thought you were doing great? But, please, do let me know if you need a hand?”

“I’m fine.” The student spits, lying on his back, clearly not fine.

Janus rolls his eyes at the obvious lie. “Are you always this stubborn or is it only on Tuesdays?”

The student shifts his eyes to the side, examining his odd companion. “Just Tuesday and Thursdays. Although on Sundays I flip a coin.”

An amused tsk escapes Janus’s lips. “Well, I do appreciate the help with that gang. Running in like you did. You’re a true hero.” Janus bats his eyes, while his “savior” scrunches his face in annoyance. 

“Oh har-de-har-har. You’re a real comedian.”

“No, really, I mean it. You… well.. You tried to help. And I suppose, that’s a nice thing to do. It’s a shame it backfired so spectacularly.”

“Yeah, well, that’s the story of my life, I suppose.”

“Things would probably go a little better if you’d let me help you. The name’s Janus by the way.” He sticks out a hand to the supine student.

“Virgil.’ His attempted savior answers, giving an odd two-finger salute in response.

Janus smiles, refusing to withdraw his hand. “Will you let me help you, Virgil?”

Virgil stares into the sky, genuinely considering his options. “I suppose I’ve already made a big enough fool of myself.” The purple student declares to the universe, finally taking hold of the offered hand.

The philosophy major growls at the self deprecation. “Wow, you truly are a fool.” Janus pulls his “savior” into a sitting position. 

Virgil winces at the movement. “Thanks for the motivation.” 

“No, really, you are an absolute fool. Stay here, I have some napkins in my bag.”

“Uhh...How am I a fool?” Virgil questions, watching Janus grab his bag and return, holding a napkin up to Virgil’s face. 

“The fact that you think accepting help makes you a fool.”

“Yeah. Yeah. I get it. Everyone needs help. Oh, thanks.” Virgil winces as Janus applies the napkin to his lip. 

“No, you clearly don’t get it. Hold that there.” Janus releases the napkin into Virgil’s grasp, pulling out his phone to text Remus. “My roommate is pre-med. I’ll see if he’s free. Can you lift up your shirt? I need to see your ribs.”

“Uhh.. is that necessary?” Virgil blushes red and well… Janus just couldn’t pass it up. He leans in. 

“Is something wrong? You’re flushing red?” He hurriedly removes a glove from his hand. Pressing his bare palm to the forehead of the injured student. He leans in close, smiling. “You’re not feverish. Could it be… that you find me attractive?” His smile is wicked.

Virgil scowls pushing him away. “Please, just because you’re dressed like a Disney villain, does not mean I think you’re cool or attractive or anything.”

“Wait.” Janus reels back. “You like my outfit?”

“I mean, yeah. It’s just so unashamedly you. And well, Disney villains are just cool.”

“I can’t argue with that.” Janus leans in close again. “But I still would like to check your ribs. If you’d allow me.”

“Ummm… okay.” He lifts his shirt up slowly. Revealing bruises that are already beginning to show. “Is that bad? That looks bad?”

“Absolutely not. Ribs are supposed to look like that.” Janus jokes. Virgil does not find it funny in the slightest. He sighs. “You’ll be fine. Don’t worry. I’ve seen worse than this.”

“You have?”

“Yeah. The roommate I mentioned. He gets into quite a few scrapes. He’s a lot like us. Unabashedly himself.” Janus speaks gently pressing his fingers to the ribs as Remus had taught him. 

Virgil winces at the touch. “Maybe that’s not the best thing to be.”

“Don’t be an idiot, Virgil. Being myself is why you find me attractive.”

Virgil blushes, spluttering. “What??”

“It’s okay.” Janus smirks. “It’s why I find you attractive too.”

Virgil is practically gasping for air, the poor fellow. Janus pulls Virgil’s shirt back into place. He rises to stare into his savior’s eyes. “Well, I think you’ll be fine until Remus gets here. Until then, do you think I could have your number?”

The purple student gulps, nodding his head vigorously. He attempts to speak. His voice cracking. He pauses. And tries again. “Yes. Yeah. Um… okay.” He speaks quietly. 

Janus unlocks his phone. Handing it over, he leans in to watch as the student types in his number, trying his best not to smile from ear to ear. “Thank you for letting me help you, Virgil.” He whispers as his phone is returned to him. Taking it back, he lightly lifts Virgil’s hand to his lips. Kissing the back of his fingers. “I think you’ve just helped me write my paper.”
