⌑ There was no doubt in Jenny’s mind that a different place meant a different ecosystem, which in turn meant different wildlife. Her māmā, Emily, was an ecologist, after all, and not only gave the ten year old as much information as Jenny asked, but also allowed the child on several field studies as well. Having been born in New Zealand and then moved to California at the age of five, it was quite easy to assume that Jenny had no experience with massive aquatic reptiles of any sort. California crocodiles were small, passive and usually timid reptiles, and rarely went out of their way to attack a human. Thus, despite the child’s exploring antics, Jenny had never seen one- or their alligator relatives- face-to-face. 

⌑ That was, of course, until her māmā brought her on a field study trip to New Orleans to study the alligator populations and the effects on on the creatures from pollutions leaking (and in some cases purposefully spilled) from the local industries. 

⌑ It wasn’t until then that Jenny truly realized how utterly enormous the aquatic reptiles could get. She had watched from afar, on the safety of a boat beside Emily as the scientist jotted down observations, as hundreds of reflecting eyes watched them both from the water. 

⌑ But that was several days ago, before the restlessness and cabin fever set into Jenny as she shuffled around in their motel room and, consequently, Jenny’s untamable explorational urge won over her logic. Currently, she sat on the swampy bank of the bayou, taking in the strange noises of the insects and birds she hadn’t heard in the entirety of her life. The child’s arms wrapped themselves around her precious wooden staff, the leather strap flapping in the momentary breeze. Jenny watched the still water, completely oblivious to anyone, or anything behind her...

Rapunzel startled awake. She wasn’t used to visitors in the middle of the night. Cautiously, she grabbed her bedside frying pan - just in case! - and headed for the door. Upon opening it and seeing the large alligator, she blinked several times, trying to figure out if she was still dreaming.

“Hello, are you lost?” she wondered at last.
